If I could stop having random food aversions or just straight up aversion to food that would be great.... I should probably track it to see if it matches up with my birth control (which I have for some reason been struggling to remember to take, even with reminder texts, when I didn't use to) since it could be linked to my cycle or the meds.... but it also might just be low grade anxiety......... or both.....

Doctor’s Visit

Alright I am back with another chapter and with this I bring something special. I want all of you to help me decide what our lovely Mari will be having so place your votes in the poll.

“Damian’s not home right?” Tim asked, making his way into the Batcave where all the other bats sans Damian were sitting around the computer.

“No, tomorrow’s pixies first appointment with that new doctor so he decided to stay the night to give her moral support since she’s never been to a gyno before.” Jason said looking up from the files he was reading over, “honestly from what I’ve heard about what happens during those exams I don’t blame her for wanting a little support before going.”

“It’s all routine and can’t be any worse than the baby-making process.” Dick hummed typing away on the computer.

“I think that’s enough talk about that; why did you want to know Tim?” Bruce asked looking over at his second youngest.

“I found more info on Marinette thought I’d share with you all while Damian wasn’t here to stop me or compromise the data,” he explained walking over to the bat computer connecting his laptop to it.

The other men all sat silently around waiting for Tim to begin his presentation as he sorted through different encrypted files before bringing up a few pictures. “To begin her original name was Marinette Dupain-Cheng and her parents were bakers back in France, Tom Dupain and Sabine Cheng,” Tim said pointing them out.

“Marinette told me they essentially kicked her out,” Bruce said crossing his arms, “They believed the words of some liar and threw her out. She lived with a friend her last year in Paris before moving here.”

“Wait, hold on,” Dick said turning to Bruce, “Her parents kicked her out when she was still a minor? Isn’t that illegal?”

“Yes, and they knew that, she mentioned that when she told her grandmother she came and took custody from her parents, who seemed more than happy to hand it over, and let her stay to finish out that school year with a friend then moved here to finish out her schooling.” Bruce nodded.

“Yeah that all tracks to what I found,” Tim nodded, showing them documents next, “I have here the transfer of custody, her transcript for moving here, as well as the adoption papers for Ivy and Harley. I also went ahead and started running some background checks on the people still in her phone.” he added typing away.

“Anyone, we should be worried about?” Jason asked leaning back in his seat content to just watching Tim work, “She told me a bit about one of her friends’ guy seemed a bit sketch when he was a Paris hero though now I think he’s meh but never got a name from her.”

“You said he was one of the heroes?” Tim asked looking over at Jason.

“Yeah, she said he gave up his miraculous after the fight because his dad was the villain and he didn’t think Ladybug would want anything to do with him if she found out who he was so he bit the bullet and gave it up. He left Paris shortly after to live with his aunt.” Jason said looking around at the others.

“If the villain were outed then it’d be easy to find out who his son was,” Tim said, turning back to the computer the clicking of keys filling the Batcave as he searched through multiple French websites. The other three just watched as screen after screen flew by before settling on a trashy tabloid-like website.

“I don’t think this is what could be considered a credible source Timmy,” Dick winced looking over all the clickbait titles and the like to dislike ratio on the articles.

“No, but it does have quite a bit on the Paris heroes,” Tim said scrolling through to articles that had more likes and seemed of better quality, “here we go, Hawkmoth Defeated: How a Recluse Held Paris Hostage.”

The four men all leaned forward reading through the article that detailed the final battle between Hawkmoth and the Paris Heroes with a written description of what happened as well as a video that seemed to have been taken from a mix of sources and spliced together. The article detailed what Hawkmoth had been doing for three years and in the end, revealed him and his accomplice to be Gabriel Agrest and his assistant Nathalie Sancoeur.

“So we know that Gabriel Agrest was the big bad so who was his kid?” Jason asked as Tim typed away.

“Adrien Agrest, teen model for the Agrest Fashion Label. Looks like after his dad got taken down he had to go through months of interrogations and court hearings just to prove his innocence. His mother was found dead in the Agrest Mansion and with no one else it looks like his aunt took him in once he was cleared.” Tim said reading through the files he dug up.

“That would mean he probably gave his miraculous to Pixie right after he was cleared. If he was going to do something sketch he’d just hold onto it.” Jason said.

“He probably was so messed up after the battle he didn’t want any connection to the miraculous I mean his father turned evil because of them.” Dick hummed crossing his arms.

The four fell silent as they took in the information they had received, “Well Tim you got anything on that liar?” Jason asked, tilting his head.

“This whole blog is about that liar.” Tim said motioning to the tabloid, “I’ll email you guys the link and read it at your own pace there is years of garbage on here.”

“Then with that, I think we should all be heading out. We'll go over more of what Tim found later for now we should get to work,” Bruce said, getting to his feet and moving to change into his costume.

The other three nodded as Tim packed up his laptop and stored it away before they all got dressed and took their way out of the cave to begin their nightly rounds.

“So what do you think they found?” Marinette asked cuddled up to Damian's side on her bed with the hyenas crowded around them on either side resting their heads over their laps, “Chloe didn’t exactly hold back on mentioning certain names.”

“I would be surprised if Drake didn’t have an entire dossier on all your friends.” Damian said rubbing Marinette’s back, “You know he probably took all your contact info right?”

“Yeah oh well,” she shrugged turning to bury her face into his neck, “They were bound to find out eventually, might as well let some of the greatest detectives around have some fun piecing my life together.”

Damian hummed closing his eyes as he relaxed back into the plush pillows covering Marinette’s bed, “Are you nervous about tomorrow?” he asked.

“A little,” she sighed tightening her grip on his shirt, “Mum told me what to expect and said she’d sit in the room with me if I wanted her to, you can’t exactly join me since we can’t have this whole thing getting out.”

“I’ll be waiting here for you when you get home don’t worry,” he said kissing her forehead, “now try to get some sleep you barely got any at the manor.”

Marinette nodded letting out a deep sigh as she shifted around to get comfortable between Damian and the hyenas. Eventually, she settled down and dozed off into a dreamless sleep with Damian rubbing her back and the familiar weight of Bud’s head on her hip.

Damian stayed up for a bit longer listening to the quiet sounds around and thinking over what to do for the next day. He eventually made his way into a dreamless sleep as well a bit after one AM when he finally managed to shut his mind off.

“Marigold are you ready?” Ivy called from the kitchen as she looked through her back to make sure she had everything.

“Almost,” Marinette said, coming out in a comfortable knit sweater and skinny jeans, “I was looking for my purse. I think Lou took it,” she said, looking around in the usual spots for her bag.

“I’ll keep your wallet and Tiki in my bag we have to get going,” Ivy said, grabbing Marinette’s wallet off the counter and stowing it in her bag as Tiki flew over and settled into the bag as well giving Ivy a nod to close the bag once she was comfortable.

Marinette nodded and went back to her room grabbing her phone quickly checking it before putting it away in her pocket and leaned down kissing Damian’s cheek as he groaned slowly blinking his eyes open. “I’m leaving I’ll text you when we’re on our way back.”

“Okay habibti call me if you need me.” he yawned reaching up and pulled her down for a kiss, “good luck with your appointment I’ll see you after.”

Marinette nodded kissing him again as Ivy shouted for Marinette that they were leaving. She gave Damian another quick peck on the lips before pulling back and ran out to meet Ivy at the door. “Had to get my phone.” she smiled stepping out of the apartment and waited as Ivy locked up and ushered down to the cab waiting outside.

“Now remember Marigold just relax and everything will go smoothly, it will be uncomfortable but it won’t hurt okay.” Ivy said, settling into the cab beside Marinette and rubbing her back, “I can sit inside the room with you if need me to.”

“I think I’ll be okay,” Marinette said, taking a few calming breaths as they made their way to the doctor’s office. Once they arrived Marinette was starting to look a little green as they went through the check-in process and filled out their info.

Waiting for her name to be called felt like an eternity and her stomach was twisting into knots as she watched other women come and go through the office. Marinette sat there twisting her fingers in her sweater and took slow deep breaths trying to calm herself when the door opened, “Marinette?” a nurse called.

Marinette shot up her face going from pale to a deep red as she made her way to the nurse. The nurse smiled and ushered her inside and went about getting her blood pressure, “Hmm little elevated but I think it could just be your nerves.” the nurse smiled, and her height and weight.

“Alright girly so here’s your room I’m going to need you to completely strip down underwear and all then put this paper gown on opening to the front and here’s a privacy blanket for your legs.” the nurse said motioning to the items on the bed, “the doctor will be in here shortly.”

Marinette nodded as the nurse closed the door leaving her alone, “It’s just a check-up.” Marinette mumbled undressing and taking her time to carefully fold her clothes and set them on the table in the corner of the room. She put on the provided gown and settled on the table keeping her phone clenched tightly in her hand as she waited for the doctor to arrive.

It felt like an eternity when there was a knock at the door and the doctor stepped in, a petite redhead with a smattering of freckles covering her pale face, “Hello Miss Marinette I’m Doctor Amelia.” she smiled coming over to shake Marinette’s hand, “I see you’re here for a wellness exam and you’re expecting.”

“Uh yes,” Marinette coughed her voice, cracking a bit from her nerves, “I uh just found out a few weeks ago.” she blushed, gripping the paper blanket covering her legs.

Doctor Amelia nodded looking over the file, “This is your first-ever wellness exam yes?” she asked, taking a seat.

Marinette nodded keeping her head bowed trying to not let her nerves take over her.

“Okay sweetie we’ll go at your pace so just relax okay.” Doctor Amelia smiled setting the file aside and grabbed her stethoscope.

The entire exam didn’t take more than five minutes before the doctor was cleaning up and stepping out to give Marinette some privacy to redress. Marinette wasted no time pulling her clothes back on and sending Damian a text saying, ‘Making this baby was less violating than that.’ before putting her phone in her pocket as there was another knock, “Miss Marinette if you're ready you can go to the front and schedule the next appointment.” Doctor Amelia said through the door.

Marinette walked over opening the door her face still a bit flushed, “Okay uh when should I come back next?” she asked.

“I think in a month should be enough time and we should be able to hear the heartbeat by then.” she smiled, “Your moms waiting for you upfront, and here’s the card to one of my nurses if you have any questions feel free to call her okay.”

“Thank you.” Marinette nodded, taking the card and quickly went to the front to meet back up with Ivy and schedule the next appointment and made their way out to walk back home.

“I think we should pick up some breakfast.” Ivy smiled putting a hand on Marinette’s shoulder as they walked. “There’s a nice little bakery around the corner should we pick up something from there?”

“Yeah, that sounds good.” Marinette nodded following Ivy down to the bakery and got in line looking over the different pastries they had for sale. Between the two of them, they picked out an array of sweet and savory options with Marinette making sure to pick out some vegetarian options for Damian. Soon they were walking out with two large bags and were walking down the street back to their home.

Upon entering both had to hold their bags of treats high out the reach of Bud and Lou trying hard to reach the goodies hidden away. Harley quickly came over pulling them back by their collars so the two could set the bags down in the kitchen.

Damian was settled at the table and got up coming over to help them unpack as Harley got some coffee and tea going as they all settled down to enjoy a bit of a late breakfast. Marinette ate her croissants and fruit danish taking small bites so as not to upset her stomach any further. The small group spoke of anything and everything as they enjoyed their meal. Harley taking the time to pick out the meat from her sandwich to give to the two hyenas and Damian holding a small conversation with Tiki as she munched on the cookies Marinette picked out.

“So when are you going back?” Harley asked looking over at Marinette as she bit into her bagel.

“In a month, the doctor said we should be able to hear the heartbeat by then,” Marinette said, finishing off her danish, “I don’t know if I’m ready.”

“You’ll be fine Marigold we’re here for you every step.” Ivy smiled ruffling her hair, “Now I think you should go lay down, maybe settle your stomach and your nerves. You were looking a bit green and tense after your appointment.”

Marinette nodded, finishing her tea and croissant before heading back to her room to lay down. Damian finished off his breakfast quickly and excused himself before following Marinette leaving the two sirens and the small goddess at the table.

“At least he’s good for our little Mari.” Harley hummed sipping her coffee, “So long as he makes her happy he can stick around I guess but not too sure I forgive him for knocking our baby up.”

“Oh, now you don’t like him?” Ivy chuckled, raising her eyebrow at her.

“Oh, I adore the kid but you know one of us has to give him the shovel talk eventually.” Harley chuckled getting up to clean the dishes and put the leftovers away.

Um. Excuse me. You had cancer??

Yeah... I mean I guess I really haven't discussed it much on tumblr. I have a little bit, but only in vague ways, or rarely made veiled references in tags.

SO, get a drink, get a snack, because this is a bit of a saga, and you already know I am longwinded at the best of times. I'm going to do like Vizzini said, and go back to the beginning. I hope you're ok I'm making this public Shells, it seems easier to? And I'll put this behind a cut because I really do wax on ( and on).

It's the end of August 2018 and i appear to have gotten some kind cold/respiratory infection. I'm at work the first day of it and it feels like a cold. No big deal. (Also this is all pre-COVID so no I didn't have COVID). The next day I feel really awful, so I call off work, and figure all I need to do is rest and I'll be ok. Turns out, NOPE. The next day I feel worse- now I can tell I have a bit of a fever, my appetite was basically, " eat one baby carrot and my appetite is exhausted." Finally, I get to the point that I am having trouble lying down - as in I am becoming short of breath when I try to lie flat (sorry if I am using the wrong word - lay/lie was always a grammar issue that eluded me.) So, I decide, ok, i will be sensible girl and go get medical attention. But I am stubborn and feel the ER is overreacting, so I go to urgent care. i park in the front row of urgent car parking, but by the time I reach the intake desk I have to put my head down because I am so winded and a bit lightheaded.

They take one look at me and tell me, point blank, "we're getting a squad for you to take you to the ER." I say, " what? no, I don't need that, this is not that big a deal." They counter, " you could barely walk in the door and you you are having significant trouble breathing. We don't have the ability to see you here." So, for the first time in my life I have to go via ambulance from urgent care to a free standing ER.

I get to the ER - where they decide, OK, lady, you're a mess. Let's get some chest x-rays and we're gonna slap some IV fluids and I can't even recall if they immediately put me on IV antibiotics or not. But after two hours there they informed me, " hey.... So, we think you need to go to the hospital-hospital not the freestanding ER." I tell them well you better hand me my laptop ( I'm that bitch who takes the laptop with her juuuuust in case I am stuck in the hospital. you never know.) Because i am not going to a hospital until I figure out if they're in my health plan. I do so and then for the second time in my life, all in one night because sometimes I am an over achiever i guess, I go via ambulance to the hospital.

They admitted me and over the next few/couple/ hours ( it was hard to tell) I progressively felt worse. I had trouble breathing if I didn't sit absolutely straight up, and at that point I hadn't gotten good sleep for around 60 hours or so. Me being me I started to get teary and panicky, because I was so tired and wasn't sure what to do. I called for the nurse and she came in and then within the next half hour your girl got taken down to the ICU. By the time we arrived down in the ICU I was really getting panicky. My mom died in the ICU ( different hospital but still) and I knew the fact they took me down there was no laughing matter. I started to think about, " ok is this what death is like? this isn't what i thought it was going to be - this is panicky and scary and not all white lights and peace."

The next thing I knew - it was two days later, and I woke up intubated. Did you know that you can be conscious and intubated? I did not. I'll speed things up a bit here. I spent a total of 8 days in the ICU - I had one hell of a case of pneumonia, and there were a couple of other diagnoses thrown in ( nope, not cancer. promise, we will get there.) . The nurses I had were AMAZING. I was intubated for about 6 of those 8 days. Then I got weaned off of it. Funniest moment on the ventilator: Physical therapist comes around and says, " Hey let's get you up and walking, you think you can?" I nodded and shrugged my shoulders to try and communicate, " sure, ok!" It went totally fine, but there were nursing students, residents, other doctors and who knows who else looking out of rooms and over desks at the two of us just y'know... *walking down the hall*. I gestured to the people because it was just flipping weird. I had an audience at the exact time NOBODY wants an audience and it confused the hell out of me. PT advised me, " there aren't too many times ventilated patients are ambulatory. You're a bit of a curiosity so people want to see."

Once I got out of the ICU and was put back on a regular floor, I got to meet with other doctors re those other diagnoses I mentioned ( chronic things I just have to manage) I also mentioned that it had been a really long time since I had been to a GYN and as had been noted in the ICU I spotted quite frequently ( I have never, ever in my life been regular period-wise and it just got weirder over time, but I just didn't really consider it. So I asked while they were setting me up with new practitioners ( my previous doctor had retired) too please set me top with a gynecologist.

So I'm out of the hospital by September 10th, 2018. The gyro appointment occurs i want to say by mid- to late September. I go in and meet her and she's lovely. While I'm up on the table she says, " hey let's do all the things and get a uterine biopsy!" I say, " excellent, do the things!" We agree it's likely going to be nothing but hey we're smart people and we will play it safe. Huzzah Gyno visit accomplished! (if I were a gamer I'd make some kind of ladybits achievement unlocked now, but I'm not a gamer.)

Two or so weeks go by - or however long it takes to get those test results back (some of these spans are lost in the mists of time). Dr Boyle calls me and apologizes that the test results that she was sure would be nothing... they are not nothing. Turns out, it's endometrial cancer.

At that point you could have knocked me over with a feather. Shells, I wanted my mom to be there so badly, I can't even express it. She would have understood how I felt - she'd been there with her breast cancer. But at the same time, I was glad she wasn't there? I remember how heartsick my mom was to tell Grandmommy when Mom got cancer. I didn't want my mom to have to hear that news, to worry about that. Dr Boyle advised me that she would be referring me to a good oncologist and i should hear from them in a week or two.

Thus began MRIS and PET scans and ultrasounds, and blood work etc. The oncologist diagnosed that he figured I might be stage three, but it depended on my lymph involvement. It brought back memories of when Mom was diagnosed and when she told me she was stage three. I asked my Dad later, "what does that mean?" He told me, " there are only four stages, so what do you think?" This time around I knew what it meant. So, we put me down for surgery November 9th, 2018. That's two days before my birthday - so I joked that I was getting my cancer out for my birthday - hooray! My best friend actually flew in from texas for my surgery ( my best friend is a SAINT, and I love her more than pearls and rubies.)

Best surgery story from this experience: For my total hysterectomy (uterus and ovaries go sayonara and then also two signal lymph nodes in the chain of nodes on either side of the pelvis to se if there is any lymph complication.) I had to be tilted back - so with my head down to move as many organs away from the uterus etc during the laparoscopic procedure. I knew this going in, However, when I woke up back in my hospital room I looked at Bestie and said, " I hurt in places I didn't expect to hurt. Oh wait. My shoulders hurt because they're not used to being weight bearing, but the procedure was laproscopic - so why the heck does my vagina hurt?" Bestie in one of her best moments ever says, " I know why." I replied, " wait, YOU know why MY vagina hurts?!" She said, " yep. So your surgery was supposed to take 3-3.5 hours ended up taking 5 hours instead. Your uterus was really big. The oncologist told us they need up having to cut it in half to pull it out of you." bestie admitted she joked with the oncologist that it was like I had just birthed a baby, he looked back at her (NOT laughing) and said, " yes, that's basically what she did." I laughed so much at that ( i mean i was also well medicated, but still) I told Bestie, " I had a Uterus! Let's call it George!" ( In retrospect I am disappointed in myself that I misgendered my own uterus, I should have called it Georgina.)

So, after healing from the surgery, by about January of 2019 I started two courses (each with a few rounds) of chemo. First came what the doctors and I called "low-pro" chemo - that we did along with radiation. Honestly, though i was making a heck of a lot more bathroom trips, you wouldn't have generally known I was sick. Most of my coworkers had no idea. I just was a bit more tired than usual. After the low pro rounds - then we moved to the bigger guns. Radiation was done but I moved to more significant chemo drugs, This wasn't because things were bad - this was the plan all along :) But I knew the "high-pro" chemo was going to make me lose my hair. THAT was a psychic struggle. I cried so much knowing that was going to happen. I got hats and caps and I even got a very nice wig. I mean, I planned as much as a girl can plan when she hears that news. I even preemptively cut my long hair. It was about half way down my back at that point. So I went in and asked the stylist please braid it and put it in between two hair ties - and then cut it - so i could keep my braid. I couldn't do locks of love anyway as it was colored, and I know it's selfish, but I wanted my hair. So, the hair went from half down my back to a face framing bob. then I just waited. And then in a few weeks it happened. I could put my hands through my hair and easily, painlessly pull it out. I am not a cute bald girl. That's when people KNOW you have something going on.

I was very lucky though, there ended up NOT being lymph involvement, and even the high pro chemo didn't make me nauseous or lose appetite. I did have HORRIBLE bone pain usually the first week after chemo ( i'd get it every three weeks). I learned a hell of a lot from that. I also was able to get some meds to help alleviate it a bit, and I took time from work when the pain was at its worst. But I have never experienced pain like that - where no matter what I did - no position changes helped. Even ice packs or heat pads didn't help or do much. It was just a waiting game, a painful waiting game. Oh also - I learned that IV benadryl is nothing like oral benadryl. IV benadryl is like walking right into a brick wall made of sleep. That stuff knocked me the hell out right quick - amazing.

Right before COVID started and the world shut down I got the flu because my immune system was in the toilet- and so I spent another week in the hospital and except for the bone pain that comes with chemo, you know what is worse than chemo injections? POTASSIUM injections. Among other things, my potassium levels were low and so I got those injections with other meds. Those suckers HURT. they BURN, and so i spent a week in the hospital only to eventually come out and find out the world was starting to shut down from COVID. Not my job at that point, but my oncologist told me, " GO HOME - YOU KNOW YOU ARE IMMUNO COMPROMISED - DON'T STAY AT WORK." So, I went home until about a month after I finished chemo.

Since finishing chemo it's been about scans, which have gone ok so far... I'm not willing to talk about the R word. I just think I'll have to be careful the rest of my life - My mom always said, "once you've gotten cancer, you always have cancer." So, maybe it's the anxiety talking, but it's kind of like waiting for the other cancer shoe to drop. In the mean time though, it's business as usual - try to find good stuff in the midst of the hot mess. Cancer has been a crisis but not a reason to lose my sense of humor. I've needed it more than ever :)

So, sorry for the SERIOUSLY LONG ASS answer, but sometimes it's just better to lay it bare. I'm not ashamed of this stuff. It's been a lot. It's been a journey... It still is... it's part of the rest of my journey, which i hope isn't over by a long shot yet. I don't believe things happen for reasons - the world is WAY too absurd for that in my opinion, BUT good gravy have i been able to learn so much from this whole three ring circus. I'm not grateful for cancer, but I am grateful for the lessons.

Struggling (medical TMI)

I don't typically use this place as a means to vent but I'm worried something is going to go very wrong and nobody will know what's happening to me since I primarily have been using twitter to update friends, so excuse this post. If you don't want medical TMI please skip over this.

Earlier last week I started noticing a hard lump in my side that would come and go, and was having some new pressure and swelling in my side that was not like any of my typical medical issues. Concerned, I tried to reach out to new primary doctor (I just got my insurance card maybe a week prior thanks to how slow Illinois is, I signed up in Dec) and was informed that they are closed to the public until this pandemic lifts. Since I've never seen this primary before, she can't even do phone appointments. I'm directed to go to a walk-in again.

I go, and after a lot of questions, poking, peeing, giving blood, etc, the doctors there give me a big ol' "lol idk" and scare the shit out of me by suggesting appendicitis, and that my blood pressure is crazy high, saying I should go to the ER.

I panic because we're in a pandemic and I know what I'll be exposed to if I go there, so I call back my primary and the nurse on that phoneline suggests the walk-in attached to the local ER, since if I really am ER-worthy they'll just cart me there in the end. I go home and have a huge panic attack.

Later that evening I go to the ER's walk-in and get poked at more, pee more, get smacked in the sides/back, etc etc etc and they pretty much rule out appendicitis, but something is still wrong. I described my awful period cramps, that I skipped my last one, and the doctor suggests an internal ultrasound. It was very much uncomfortable but basically, everything boils down to me having a large and abnormal-shaped ovarian cyst on the side I'm swelling on.

I'm starting to actually feel pain now on this side since it's been poked at all day. I'm given anti inflammatory meds and told to see my primary/gyno ASAP despite the pandemic and that I need it re-scanned in 6 to 12 weeks. I go home, I have horrible swelling in my entire side that starts to jab pain now, and my period starts.

I discovered that I can't sit normally anymore, and prolonged pressure on that side makes the swelling worse. Typing and texting and gaming all becomes difficult as hell.

Friday I call the clinic back and mention the difficulties, they give me a big ol' "duhhhh we dont know! You need to talk to the gyno or go to the ER!" so I try to reach the gyno attached to the clinic since they've given me a referral, they're too busy to make an appointment and tell me to go to the ER because the ovary may have burst and be my "period". All I have are questions!! but I go to the ER, extremely nervous.

They start to poke at me and the doctor stops the nurses realizing that my issues are normal (???) for what this is and answers my concerns, concerns that deadass could have been answered over a phone...  but he prescribes me harder painkillers, which I definitely needed. They send me home.

The swelling and pain has not eased up this whole time but the meds are helping that. I'm sleeping a lot. I hurt a lot. And to say the inevitable, I'm now terrified I've been exposed to covid19 after hiding inside for a month.

Today (Monday) I get a call early from the scheduling dept and they tell me the gyno is doing phone appointments only due to the pandemic, and I say sure fine, anything to talk to someone who knows what is going on--- except they schedule me for NEXT MONDAY MORNING so now I'm expected to sit a week like this...?? I'm already laying on my stomach a lot in bed because existing is uncomfortable and moving wrong swells my side up. I can't feed my pets well, I can't do dishes or laundry, and I feel immensely useless in every way. My partner is doing everything and is still working long hours in retail risking her life every day so people can... buy... flooring...? I'm basically just managing swelling/pain with meds and sleeping a lot due to depression coming with my situation.

So this cyst could rupture at any moment and non-emergency doctors are mostly MIA due to covid19 and can't help me much. I'm just expected to suck it up.

This is also making my gender issues horribly loud and I'm struggling with myself and being trapped in a body I ultimately have no control over, since doctors are obsessed with keeping the baby-maker intact at all costs, despite my wishes for otherwise since I was 16.

On top of all of this, just before this started we lost 2 pets almost back-to-back, and we haven't been able to process and grieve at all. My partner comes home and makes cloth masks for her coworkers and her brother's coworkers and is, without a doubt, devastated. Everything has been really hard and all I can hope for is that we all come out of this alive, at this point.

It's been rough. Further updates will be on my twitter from this point on, but I felt I needed to say something here incase the worst happens.

The bell on the door jingles as you open it up. Cool air washes over you as a slight chill creates tiny goosebumps all over. You walk inside the building and look around. There are two old women in the waiting room and they’re both reading magazines. You looked towards the front desk and slowly walk up. A young, pretty brunette greets you with a wide smile.

“Hi, do you have an appointment?” she asks cheerfully.

You can’t help but smile back. Hers was so contagious.

“Um, yeah. I have an appointment with Doctor Taylor.” you say.

You were at your six month checkup at the gynecologist. You hadn’t been going like you were supposed to, so you are starting to change that. This was a brand new doctor you chose and you were slightly nervous. You were sure that this man was old and had been in this line of practice for a while.

“Oh, perfect. Miss (Y/L/N)?” she asks, confirming you.

“That’s me.” you reply back, smiling.

The lady nods and types for a moment on the computer. You glance around and take in everything. Everything was marble and almost beautiful. It was clean and you were comfortable with your decision on choosing this place. The lady looks back to you.

“Alright, Miss (Y/L/N), you’re all checked in. We have everything we need so just take a seat and you’ll be called back shortly.”

You thank the lady and find a seat facing the door. You sit down and fidget with your hands. You were use to a women being your doctor, so having a man do it was almost nerve wracking to you. You shake your leg and space out deep in thought, not even noticing the door open up and a women looking around.

“(Y/N)?” she calls out.

You look up quickly and stand. She smiles to you as you walk towards her.

“Hi, (Y/N). Just gonna take you back to your room and get you all settled in.”

You walk down a narrow hallway and pass by a closed door. A man was speaking on the inside and you couldn’t help but catch his voice. It was smooth and attractive and you caught yourself wishing you could see the face behind it. The nurse leads you to a room all the way in the back and you step in. A table is sat in the middle of the room and a hospital type gown is folded neatly on top of it.

“Alright, so if you wouldn’t mind taking off your jeans and underwear and putting the gown on. When you’re done, just sit on the table and the doctor will be in here with you shortly. He’s just finishing up with a patient.”

You nod and sit your purse down on a table in the corner.

“You’re in here for just a check up, correct?” she asks.

“Oh, yeah. Just a check up.”

The nurse writes something down on her clipboard and looks up to smile.

“Alright, perfect. So just change your clothes and you’re all set.”

You thank the woman as she exits the room and closes the door behind her. You hurriedly slide your pants and panties off and sit them next to your purse on the tiny table. You rush to the bed and slide onto it. The paper under you crinkles as you situate yourself. You look around and stare at the giant posters on the wall that describe the female anatomy and get lost in the very descriptive illustrations. You’re brought back to reality when there’s a slight knock on your door. You sit up straight and make sure you’re covered properly.

“Come in!” you call out.

The door slowly opens up and a head peeks in.

“Just making sure you’re decent, love.” says a familiar voice.

“Oh, I’m-”

Your words are cut short when the man fully enters into the room. Your eyes open wide as a handsome, young blonde man enters. The complete opposite of what you were expecting. He was so good looking and now, even worse, you were self conscious. Why didn’t I shave my legs today, you harshly think to yourself. The man looks at you and stares almost a second too long. You watch him shake his head as he tries to clear his mind.

“Um, hi, Miss (Y/L/N). I’m Doctor Taylor. I see here that you’re in for a check up?” he asks, not able to look up at you.

That voice. That was the voice you had heard earlier and wanted to see the face behind it. Now you did and you were not disappointed. This man so gorgeous that it made your cheeks burn and you know that he noticed.

“Um,” you clear your throat, causing him to look up. “Yeah. My check up. Yes.”

He looks at you with those big blue eyes and you can’t look away. How in the world was this man a gynecologist and not a full time model? Why are you so flustered right now? Stop thinking about this! Doctor Taylor nods his head and places your chart on the counter. He grabs a few latex gloves and slides them on. He walks back over to you and licks his lips.

“If you can just lay back and place your feet onto the sternums.” he half whispers.

You stare at him as you lean back and spread your legs. He glances over at you and tenses his jaw as you spread them. You take in a breath as you place your feet in the sternums.

“So, Miss (Y/L/N),” he starts.

“You can call me (Y/N).” you say, looking at him.

“So, (Y/N), you seem nervous.”

Your eyes open slightly at his bluntness.

“Oh, um. I don’t know…” you say fast.

Roger smiles and sits down on a stool.

“Guess I’ve never had a gynecologist so hot before.” you say before you can catch yourself.

You freeze and can’t believe you actually just said that out loud. Roger smirks once again and looks up to you, watching your cheeks turn red.

“Well,” he starts. “Guess I haven’t had a patient as beautiful as you.” he says quickly, suddenly realizing the words falling from his lips.

Now it’s his turn for his cheeks to burn red. You bite your lip and feel a sudden burst of confidence hit you.

“Bet you say that to all your patients.” you joke.

Roger takes in a breath and half laughs.

“Only the ones I put my fingers in.” he says with a quick wink.

Health Update

It's day 4 of my second period post-op and honestly, I'm a little more active on my period. (By "active" I mean I'm not so horribly bed-ridden, and have been able to make my own breakfast the entire time, as well as my lunch, and only needed my husband to make my dinner the first two days instead of the entirety of my period. I've also been able to do laundry, too.) I'm still limited on what I can do. For example, I'm typing this at night while sitting at my desk, yet I'm not sure how long I can sit here tonight. My back does hurt, but it's on my left side, and is likely my sciatica doing this.

I've definitely been able to eat more, as in more than two meals a day. I still, however, have to remain on the Mediterranean diet as best as I can, since I don't want to chance anything. And my bowel movements have been quite merciful. I'm still waiting a few months before I decide whether or not to slowly introduce some cheese back into my diet. I do, however, wish to schedule an appointment with a dietitian for advice on dietary adjustments. But I'm waiting until spring before making anymore appointments (since we all know covid cases are gonna skyrocket during the winter months).

I'm done seeing my gyno doctor regarding post-op appointments, as my incisions are healing wonderfully. They're also not quite as itchy, and I'll likely be able to FINALLY shower normally (our well water irritated the hell out of one of my incisions when it soaked through a shirt while washing my hair; I made a good call to do a pseudo-sponge-bath on a couple of towels in bed with heated up bottled water and some wash cloths).

I still deal with bodily aches, and I'm going to be easing into exercising now to get my strength back up. I hope to do full-on exercising starting in January. I'll need that strength for gardening next year.

Good news is I've gained a teensy bit of weight. I weighed 84 pounds the day of my surgery. Couple weeks ago, I got weighed at my last appointment and I'm 87 pounds. The reason I'm so small and it's difficult for me to gain weight is my high metabolism. I've tried a LOT to gain weight and it's borderline impossible, which pisses me off. I'm tired of the first thing half the people tell me when they haven't seen me in years is how thin I am. Like.. I don't fucking like it. I hate how scrawny I am, please get the fuck off the subject, thank you.

I should also mention that after further talks with my gyno who performed the surgery, that golf-ball-sized endometriosis was actually sticking to my bowel and he had to carefully scrape it off. It's no wonder I had bowel issues.. A combination of that plus the mass itself pressing against it, effectively half-blocking my bowel in a way would make anyone not wanna eat much for fear of pissing that area of the body off and creating excruciating pain. I'm so glad I got that surgery.

So yeah, that's how I've been doing lately.

Mary Margaret had only had one pregnancy scare in all of her life, long before she had even planned out her family. Ever since Emma, her period had been off, but she knew when to expect it. Things with two kids had been so great that when Neal was only 6 months old, they had tried for baby number three and conceived right away, having Charles James or Charlie as he was almost immediately nicknamed by everyone. People called them crazy and occasionally they felt it with three kids under four. Yet, they wouldn’t change a thing. Charlie showed to be relaxed, a lot like Neal when he reached his first birthday. Though, both boys managed to keep up with their rambunctious sister.

 Two years later, Mary Margaret got hit by that baby fever once again and it didn’t take much arm twisting on David’s part. Emma was off at kindergarten, Neal at preschool. Leopold had just passed away, leaving the family an unexpected inheritance. (As it turned out, he had never bothered to change his will after Mary Margaret cut him off.) They put most of it into savings, knowing that they would need to put four kids through college at some point. Yet, they used a part of it to make sure that they’d be okay to have a fourth child.

 Finn Cole came 9 months later, right on his due date. They thought Emma had been a handful, but he seemed to have twice his sister’s energy and was constantly getting into trouble. Even so, they loved him to bits, just as much as they did their other children. Mary Margaret got the job as vice principal at the combined middle and high school, David’s farm was doing quite well. Their older kids were growing by the minute and they felt pretty complete. They decided that four was their magic number.

 Then 7 years later, Mary Margaret felt sick and she wasn’t sure why. She hadn’t eaten anything out of the ordinary and there was no bug going around their household. (A rarity in the winter with 4 kids, on top of Mary Margaret’s job where she was constantly exposed to things.) Luckily, it was the weekend, so she could relax a bit without having to worry about her work responsibilities on top of motherhood.

 Her late period was the next concern. Ever since Finn, it had gone back to its usual cycle, two months on, two months off. She wondered if it was possible that she was going through early menopause. It wasn’t as if she knew her family’s medical history all too well, but it wouldn’t surprise her. She was all set to make an appointment with the gyno, until her mind flashed to another reason why she could be late.

 Date nights were a rarity for her and David, ones out of the house that was. Yet, 2 months prior, Emma and Neal had gone to sleepovers, and Regina offered to take Finn and Charlie for one as well. So, it had just been them. They went to the fancy Italian restaurant in town, ordered really nice wine and when they got back to the house, enjoyed being able to have sex without a kid running in needing something.

 She had to take out her implant due to a recall and hadn’t yet bothered to get another. She could vaguely remember David questioning about a condom, but she had shrugged it off.

 “Crap,” she whispered to herself.

 A quick trip to the pharmacy and three pregnancy tests later and it was confirmed: Mary Margaret was pregnant for the fifth time…at 42 years old.

 She looked into all of the things that could go wrong. There were conditions the baby could have, things that could go wrong with Mary Margaret herself. How could she have been so careless? It was one thing when she was 27 and it was just her…but she had four kids, a husband. A large part of her was so happy at a chance to get to raise another child, but a smaller part was filled with fear.

 The first thing she knew she had to do was tell David. She waited until all the kids had gone to bed and sat him down to show him the tests. He looked as if he had been knocked over with a feather, then said the first thing that came to mind.

 “And we just sold the last of Finn’s baby stuff.”

Mary Margaret gave him a weary look. “What?”

“We just gave the last of Finn’s baby clothes to Bae and Isabella’s baby,” he said. “I guess we’ll have to buy new stuff now.”

“That’s seriously where your mind goes?”

“I just like to be prepared.”

“David…I’m scared.”

“Why? We’ve done this before.”

“Yes, but I was a lot younger than.” She swallowed. “What if something goes wrong?”

“Hey.” He took her hand. “You can’t think like that. You’re not old, you’re only 42. Plenty of women have a baby at that age. Heck, look at Gold. He was 48 when Gideon was born.”

“That’s different. He didn’t have to carry the baby. Belle was what…28? We knew she and Gideon would be okay.”

“It’s going to be okay, I promise you.”

She slowly nodded, wanting to believe it more than anything. “I don’t want to tell the kids, not until we’ve reached the second trimester. I mean…I’m pretty sure we’re close to that anyway.”

David chuckled, realizing when the baby had to be conceived. “Our one kid free night lead to baby number five.”

“Oh the irony,” Mary Margaret said, smiling for the first time since she took the test, kissing him.

 As it turned out, the pregnancy was the least of their surprises. A few tests and an ultrasound revealed one more surprise: Mary Margaret was carrying identical twins. They ran on David’s side of the family, but given that it had never come up with their other pregnancies, they assumed the gene had skipped them.

 The doctor went over the risks of the pregnancy, it was definitely high risk and she’d have to go on bed rest at some point. That didn’t help calm Mary Margaret’s nerves, but David once again assured her that things would be okay.

 Four weeks later, they sat the kids down to share the big news.

 “I’m pregnant,” she said. “With twins.”

Neal raised an eyebrow. “Won’t you be like…the oldest mom in the world?”

Mary Margaret rolled her eyes. “Believe it or not, no. I am only 42, you know.”

Emma tilted her head. “I thought after Finn…you said you didn’t want any more.”

“Well…sometimes these things happen. We’re very excited.”

“So…I’m getting two baby brothers?” Finn asked, hopefully.

Mary Margaret chuckled. “We don’t know about that, they could be girls.”

“Please.” Charlie rolled his eyes. “Emma’s the only girl in this family.”

“So, does this mean we have all your support?” David asked. “Mom’s going to be okay, but this pregnancy means she’ll have to rest a bit. That means I’m going to need you guys to help out more around the house. We need to really pitch in so things stay the same.”

“We definitely can,” Neal promised. “Whatever we can to help Mom.”

 Mary Margaret grinned and looked at all of her kids. Finn and Charlie seemed on board, but when she reached her eldest child, she saw a different look on Emma’s face. It wasn’t anger or disdain, but…she didn’t seem happy.

 “Emma,” she whispered. “Are you okay?”

“Fine. I’ll help however you need. Can I go now?”

“Sure.”

 Emma avoided her mother for 2 weeks. She did her part around the house and even went out of her way to walk Finn home. Every time Mary Margaret tried to sit down with her, she was busy with something else. David saw the stress it was putting on both of them and knew something had to change. Emma was close to both her parents, but normally it was him to get things out of her.

 One night after mostly everyone else had gone to bed, he found Emma up in her room, reading. He lightly knocked on the open door and smiled a bit.

 “Hey kiddo, want to take a walk?”

Emma glanced at her clock. “It’s 10.”

“Ice cream then? I just got a new pint of rocky road,” he bartered, knowing her favorite.

 She looked hesitant, but couldn’t resist her sweet tooth. Putting the book down, she followed him downstairs and they settled down in the kitchen. David got himself some chocolate, while scooping out some rocky road for Emma. She dug in, ignoring his worried glance.

 “You wanna tell me what’s bothering you?”

“Nothing.”

“Emma, I know you. Is it the babies? I won’t lie, Mom and I are going to be busy when they get here, but nothing will change how much we love you.”

“This isn’t my first baby brother,” she said with an eye roll. “I know how it works.”

“Could be baby sisters,” he reminded her. “If that’s not it, then what?”

“It’s just…Mom’s going on bed rest soon and I…I did some research.” She chewed on her lip. “Her pregnancy is high risk. What if something happens to her?”

“Oh, kiddo.” He moved closer to her, wrapping an arm around her shoulders. “Nothing’s going to happen.”

“You have to say that.”

“No, I don’t.” He sighed. “The truth is, I’m scared too.”

“You are?”

“Yeah, I’ve been scared each time your mom has been pregnant.”

“You don’t get scared.”

He chuckled. “I do, especially when it comes to the people I love. However, I do know your mom. She’s a fighter, she’s going to do all she can to make sure that she won’t leave us.”

“But what if she does?”

 David stared down into her eyes and realized how much of a kid Emma still was. She was nearly 14 and tried to pretend like she was big and bad, not needing anyone’s help. Yet, the truth was, she was still a little kid. One who needed her parents, both of them, no matter what.

 “If anything, God forbid, happened to your mom, we’d be okay,” he whispered. The thought scared the hell out of him, but he knew he had to talk about it for Emma’s sake.

“I can’t lose her, Daddy,” Emma whispered. “I love her so much. I know I don’t act like it sometimes…”

“She knows, we both do.”

“There’s just still so much I need her for.”

“Which is why she’s not going anywhere.”

“She could. Your mom did.”

That comment felt like a sword to David’s heart. “Oh, Emma. It’s not like my mom. I know you’re scared and maybe there’s not much I can say to ease that right now, but I do know that pushing Mommy away won’t help.”

Emma sighed, picking at her ice cream. “I just thought it’d make things easier.”

“Just be there for her, kiddo. You can tell her you’re scared, she can handle it.”

“Yes.”

 The next day, David came home from picking up Finn from karate and found Emma curled up into her mother’s side, practically clinging to her. Both girls were asleep, tissues around them. He smiled a bit, knowing that they had worked things out. Deep down, he knew that everything would be okay, they just had to give it time.

 They busied themselves over the next few months to keep their minds off it. Emma and Charlie helped develop the nursery while Neal read practically every book on the subject. Finn helped in his own way, drawing pictures for his mom and going to talk to her every day when he got home from school when went on bed rest during the 5th month mark. Throughout it all, the kids were determined that they’d be getting two baby brothers.

 Mary Margaret’s pregnancy was going well and for a bit, they really thought that maybe things would go according to plan.

 Then when she was exactly 28 weeks, she woke up to bleeding. David rushed her to the hospital and within two hours, she was being wheeled off to surgery. The babies were doing fine, but to keep them that way, they had to be delivered right away. David may have been terrified with every other birth, but this scared him even more.

 The kids had already gone off to school when it happened and they knew something was wrong when their aunt Regina pulled up to take them home. She told them that their mother was fine, she was healing just fine.

 “And the babies?” Emma asked.

Regina bit her lip. “Your sisters are stable, in the NICU.”

Charlie didn’t even seem to be phased that he had been wrong all that time. “Can we see them?”

“Not right now, soon, though.”

“Are they going to be okay?”

“Yes, it’s just going to be a long road.”

 David spent the next few days split between making sure that Mary Margaret was okay and checking on the kids. They all wanted to visit their mom, but the doctors felt that she needed to rest some more. He didn’t feel like he could breathe, until on the day that Mary Margaret was to be released, they felt that the babies were stable enough to be held and have more visitors.

 Mary Margaret didn’t even mind the pain as her older kids gave her big hugs, holding onto Emma’s hand even when she pulled away. They headed down to the NICU, where she had been able to see her babies as much as she wanted. Emma, Neal, Charlie and Finn stood back in awe, watching as their parents got to hold the twins for the first time.

 “They’re perfect,” Mary Margaret whispered. “Just like the rest of you.”

“They’re so tiny,” Finn said, crowding next to David. “Was I this tiny?”

He chuckled. “No. Emma was pretty close, though. They were two pounds, Emma was four.”

“Seems like it’s our girls that are stubborn and come early,” Neal teased, nudging his big sister in the ribs.

Emma rolled her eyes. “Do you guys have names for them?”

“We do. We always like our names to mean something.” Mary Margaret smiled up at all of her children. “I chose Genevieve, because she was the patron saint that protected Paris.”

“And I picked Hannah,” David said. “I really liked the name Grace, but we already know someone with that name, so I picked a name that means that.”

“Genevieve and Hannah,” Emma said with a grin. “Pretty.”

“Nothing too stuffy like Charles,” Charlie quipped with a smirk.

Mary Margaret giggled, shaking her head. “The middle names mean something too. Genevieve’s is Rose, which was my mother’s middle name. We would’ve gone with Eva, but that was just too close to Emma.”

“And Hannah’s is Rachel, which means female sheep.”

“You named my baby sister after a sheep?” Charlie asked

“We breed them on our farm, they’ve always been a big part of our lives.”

He rolled his eyes. “It’s so weird, but oddly very our family.”

 Genevieve Rose and Hannah Rachel Nolan were able to come home one month later, surpassing what anyone else thought. Their lives were suddenly ten times more hectic, between the newborns, chauffeuring their other kids around to school and extracurriculars. They all took it in stride, though. Things Your Gyno Probably Wishes they Could Tell You

In a previous post, I reviewed the common questions I get asked on a near-daily basis. This post will be the companion piece to “Questions You’ve Always Wanted To Ask Your Gyno...” In this post, I will lay out a few Things Your Gyno Wishes They Could Tell You. These are things I wish I could say to a patient’s face in the moment, but no matter how kind and non-judgmental I would present these issues, it would be difficult for any patient not to feel defensive. In this format, these issues are hardly criticisms and more the helpful hints I truly intend them to be, so patients can the the most out of their visits and relationship with their provider.

1. Know what medications and supplements you are taking and WHY you are taking them.

I need to know this information so I am not unintentionally setting you up for a bad drug interaction. Also, please don’t pop any pills or put any medications or supplements in your body that you aren’t sure how it’s supposed to benefit you. Please know why you’re taking that antibiotic or the cardiac medication. If you can’t answer that, then there’s a huge part of your medical history I’m missing--and THAT makes me hella anxious. If you can’t remember that hard-to-pronounce name on the bottle, write it down somewhere: on your phone, for example. Have that list easily accessible for any healthcare visit--knowing your medications is part of every healthcare visit for every subspecialty of medicine. We don’t just prescribe birth control and hormone replacement therapy in Women’s Health and the potential for drug interactions is very real. Even so, hormonal medication carries plenty of potential drug interactions of its own as well as potentially causing serious side effects with certain medical conditions, which brings me to...

2. Know your medical history and share it with me.

Even if you are a minor, take control of your health from the get-go. Overbearing mothers drive me nuts (even though I can be a bit of a Mama Bear myself), answering all my questions on behalf of their daughter while the young lady just stares at her feet. What happens when mama’s not there and you need to go to urgent care and suddenly you can’t answer questions about your medical history or your family history because mama’s always done it for you? What if you can’t reach her by phone when you need to? This can be a big, BIG problem--for you and your provider. Know your medical history inside and out, it will make you a better healthcare consumer and advocate for yourself. It helps me know what medications and therapies may or may not be a good fit. Don’t ever withhold information about a medical condition (ie. high blood pressure) because you want me to prescribe you something that would be contraindicated for you. I don’t want to cause you a stroke because you either didn’t know or purposefully provided me with an incomplete history so you can get the birth control pill your bestie likes so much. Accurate. History. Is. Everything. It is the bedrock upon which all your personalized and safest, most effective care will be based.

3. No question is too embarrassing or awkward for me; don’t let it be that way for you.

Ask me anything. I mean it: anything. I’d rather you get accurate, scientifically sound information from me than some clueless social media influencer or Cosmo magazine. What is out there about Women’s Health and sexuality--on social media and pop culture--is rife with misinformation and half-truths. You may feel awkward putting your question into words; you may feel embarrassed because you never had anyone in your life you felt you could ask these deeply personal and intimate questions to. That’s why I here. That’s why I do this; why I felt called to do this. Women’s Health is still so private and elusive for many women. We still carry that socially-imposed shame about our own bodies and sexuality that we seem to carry from a young age. I’m here to dismantle that. You may feel awkward asking me that burning, secret question you always wanted to know, but I promise that it’s self-imposed. I will answer your questions in a compassionate, non-judgmental way because that is the very heart and soul of what I do. Every single patient who has ever opened up to me with that “weird” or “embarrassing” question always feels tremendously better after they do.

4. Please get STD tested between each sexual partner. Please. Please! Pleasepleasepleaseplease!

Most STDs will either present sub-clinically or with no symptoms at all. It most likely won’t be like the horrifying pictures from your high school health class. People can and do walk around with chlamydia for months, not knowing there’s anything wrong. That increases the risks of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease--an excruciatingly painful pelvic infection. PID can lead to infertility by scarring up the fallopian tubes. Chlamydia-induced scarring of the tubes and infertility can occur even without PID, or any notable symptoms at all. Meanwhile those unknowingly infected with chlamydia have now passed it on to any one night stands or have brought it into any new relationships with them. Without STD testing, I have no idea how long you’ve had it and if your current partner was unfaithful or brought it with them from a previous relationship. What I do know is if you were negative after one sexual partner, then positive with the next...weeeeeellll...now we have a better idea who gave it to you. As for any infidelity? Well, it would help if they had up-to-date STD testing, wouldn’t it?

5. Pull out method is a terrible form of birth control. Stop using it unless an unintended pregnancy is okay with you.

Really. I can’t tell you how many women refuse birth control right after having a baby and decide to use the pull out method, only to come back to me 3-6 months after they gave birth, pregnant again and upset about it. If you don’t want hormonal birth control, make him use condoms. If he won’t wear condoms, then no sex for him. Yes, it really is that simple. Stop letting men be selfish about contraception. Last I checked, it’s your uterus and your vagina.

6. Don’t be ugly to me if I give you test results or information you don’t like.

If I tell you a certain type of birth control would not be safe for you or that your lab work indicates you are not pregnant despite your pregnancy-like symptoms, please don’t get angry at me and proceed to argue with me. If I tell you that you have an STD, get angry about it all you want. I get it. Just don’t curse me out. I was not the person who gave you herpes.

7. Be. On. Time.

Yes. You may have to wait for me anyway. But you know why? The pregnant women two people before you failed her test and now we are concerned about her baby’s well-being and impromptu trip to Labor & Delivery. The work-in before her just found out her baby has no heartbeat on her dating ultrasound, and we have to discuss her options on how this miscarriage will pass. Don’t throw a fit about “I usually have to wait around anyway!” when you are 20 minutes late for your appointment and we have to reschedule. I like to go home and see my family at some point, and you being late would push me even further behind, which is not fair to me or to the on-time patients after you.

8. Patients lie.

Yes, House, MD was right. Patients lie. Probably not you. And the patients who lie to us have their reasons. But the pregnant woman who swore she is not on drugs despite the obvious track marks on her arm, the positive urine drug screen, and the higher-than-a-kite demeanor is lying. The young lady who swears she’s not sexually active because of her overbearing, super-religious mother in the room, but whose wet prep shows trichomoniasis not a yeast infection, is lying. The young lady who says she doesn’t need a pap smear because she’s in a same-sex relationship and has never had sex with a man has a history of a high-grade abnormal HPV+ pap smear pre-dating her current relationship, is lying. So when we ask you for a urine sample for a pregnancy test or STI urine screening, please don’t be offended. You’re probably being honest that you have never had sex or only have sex with other women, and thus could not be pregnant. But I can’t know that for sure. Patient’s lie. For whatever reason, they lie. Please just pee in the cup so we can run our tests and move on.

Studying with Depression (Part 1)

Hi, my name is Depression, and I have jasmine. Just kidding, but that’s how it feels sometimes, like depression is who you are. It’s not. And you can’t let it take over your life like I did last semester.

I stopped going to class, doing homework, leaving my bed, and eating sometimes. I did essentially nothing all day. I hated my life. Ironically, my depression was caused by bad grades, which of course worsened. And I also have anxiety, so even when I was motivated to go to class again or to talk to/ email a professor, I was petrified to talk to them, to have a confrontation, to reach out. Through the help of a campus therapist, my academic advisor, my sister, my friends, and eventually my mother when I told my her about how bad I’d gotten (which pissed her the fuck off for the longest time but also she was worried about me), I determined that I should apply for a medical withdrawal for that semester (basically I got all W’s for my classes so my GPA wouldn’t drop. And wasted a semester’s worth of tuition). It was hard. I don’t recommend letting it get to that point. I actually ended up making mostly C’s, but my GPA was like a 1.5 I believe. For comparison, my GPA in highschool was a 6.6/ 6.0 (weighted).

TL;DR: Don’t be depressed it sucks for your GPA

Anyways, here are some tips for that bc I don’t really like the other posts I’ve seen on this sorta stuff.

1) Seek help.

The first step that helped me was to start seeing the campus therapist. If you don’t have one, see your advisor or go on your insurance’s website to see if they cover therapy/ to find someone who takes your insurance. Or if not that, tell a parent/ guardian/ sibling/ friend/ old teacher/ literally anyone who can help. I’ve even seen a lot of adds on instagram for counselors that you can text. This is the first most important step. 

If you think you may be medicated, see your regular doctor, that’s where I got my prescription. Eventually try to see a specialist (psychiatrist) but this helps you get back on track. It helped me to sit down and schedule my eye exam, dentist appointment, yearly check up, gyno appointment. I was taking care of my self. Which brings me to my next point...

2) Take care of yourself.

You are babysitting yourself. Kids have school, a bedtime, snacktime, homework and chores after school.

EG) When you wake up, wash your face, brush your teeth, take your meds/ vitamins (I actually got vitamins before I took antidepressants bc it helped me feel like I was actively taking care of the problem). Get dressed, shower if you have the energy or at least use dry shampoo or put your hair in a tight ponytail. Put effort into your appearance, whether this means getting a haircut you badly need, doing a facial, or doing your nails. You can do your brows, beat your face, or buy one new outfit/ jewelry/ whatever makes you happy (1 only bc I developed a bad shopping habit while depressed). Make sure you eat at least 2 or 3 times a day, and drink at least 1 glass of something with each meal. (of course eating 3 main meals with lots of fruits, veggies, fiber, and proteins and having snacks and drinking pure water and teas are recommended but people are assholes it’s hard for us sometimes and have small goals and then work yourself up). Kids like juice and dino- shaped nuggets and goddamn it so can you (but also don’t overeat bc that makes you feel like shit too don’t eat just garbage)Don’t drink or do drugs, bc depression and drugs/ alcohol do not fucking mix I STG. 

It helps to pretend like you have somewhere to go that isn’t school in the morning. Just roll out of bed, don’t log on, and just get ready whether it’s bare minimum or dressed to impress, but just do it and eat and go out

3) Go out

Go to class, or even if you don’t go to class get out of your damn room. Go to the smoothie place, the student center, the library, the campus park, anywhere on campus. get out of your room. Do something with friends. Change and deviate from your normal depressed state of dissociating into the void in bed or being online too long out binge watching. Or at least do it with a friend. Working out is great if you have the energy, especially as it scientifically helps with your mood and motivation.

4) Get a week long plan

You can’t fix your depression and school in a day. You need momentum. One thing I hated last semester was I felt like I never had enough clones to do all my things. I still agree, but I’ve gotten better. Do one day of light cleaning (putting things away- ish), one for actually cleaning (wiping, sweeping, mopping, vaccumming, scrubbing), one or two for laundry ( can either wash clothes or put them away, I never have energy for both), one for hella self care (take a shower you really need it, maybe a bath, mani- pedi, skincare, shave if you like, lotion, deodorant, perfume, sunscreen, floss and shit, light a candle, wear comfy clothes), one day to figure out a game plan (download apps, find websites, find tutoring services/ study groups, look at the syllabus and see what you can do to raise your grade, email teachers if you’re up for it, look into study strategies) and then maybe one day try to focus on MWF classes and another do TTh classes, or break it down however you like. Once your room and yourself and your clothes aren’t so nasty, it’s easier to keep it up. What’s hard for me is feeling overwhelmed.

5) Little goals, little wins

What helps me long term is the little wins. Focus on what you did right and how to improve, and don’t dwell on how you messed up. Going to 1 class is better than none. Or maybe you skipped classes but at least you worked out. Maybe you still didn’t shower but you called your sister and remembered to eat. Maybe you slept in late but now you went to bed early. Maybe you failed an assignment but at least you did it and got higher than a 0. Maybe you didn’t go to class but you went to the store. It’s a process and you start small but it gets better. Once you build up a momentum/ streak and start tackling little problems it’s less overwhelming and easier to stick to it and most importantly...

6) Forgive yourself

You will fuck up, it’s okay, literally it doesn’t matter, keep trying. Rome wasn’t built in a day; your life won’t change in a day either. Every one has bad days. Just work to make tomorrow a good one.

Yesterday in therapy I told the story of the last days with Sophie and my first days of incapacitating mental illness, just before I was officially diagnosed. I was surprised at how upset I became in therapy, and by the clarity of my often faulty memory. Timeline was:

  I started to feel like I was becoming invisible in October, right after I started dating Sophie, right when I turned 19.

  My depression increased. I started to disappear.

By Christmas, I knew something was wrong with me, but I didn’t know what. I remember saying “Something is really wrong with me,” to my mom when I came home for Christmas break. When my folks drove me to Austin at the New Year to put me on a plane back to Ohio, my dad gave me a giant teddy bear in the parking lot, and I hugged him and cried very hard. My mom took a picture of us that I have here in my house. Our eyes are red, even though we’re smiling. His arm is around my shoulder, and we both look like we’re holding our breath.

  January was something called “Winter Term,” which exists because it’s basically too cold to live in Ohio in January. The campus empties out. Everyone did an individual project during Winter Term, appropriately called a “Winter Term Project,” and you could complete your project anywhere in the world. Oberlin is mostly wealthy, so students would do their projects in Hawaii or Barbados or Portugal. Wherever they wanted, basically. A tiny minority of students would stay on campus, so the ice-laden, snow-covered campus stayed partially open. The libraries had some limited operating hours, and one of the cafeterias was kept functioning. I chose a listening/research project on mezzo-sopranos of the last century. My roommate, Laura, went away somewhere for the month, so Sophie and I had a giant room to ourselves. We hid inside, only leaving to find food or go to the conservatory to research. Baldwin had a large, round practice room on the first floor with a piano in it, directly below my own round room, so we didn’t even need to go to the conservatory to practice. There were two places near us that delivered food: a Chinese place on Main Street and a Dominos about 30 miles away. With temperatures severely below zero, it was worth the money and the wait to not have to leave the house. We binge-watched TV and movies on her laptop, ate takeout, and existed naked with the radiators cranked. The sky was only ever grey or black.

  I started to think that I would marry this girl, and soon after I had that thought, I started feeling stressed and trapped. I didn’t think I’d ever be strong enough to leave her. There were things I didn’t like, but I felt so stuck. I was madly in love, and marriage seemed like an inevitability, but I had the sense that I was too young and hadn’t been with enough people yet, seen enough of my life, or learned enough about myself to be happy making that lifelong commitment. Then I started to get sick.

  It started with stomach pain that turned into nausea and vomiting. I went to the doctor, got lots of tests done (including a CAT scan and a vaginal ultrasound), and wound up with a diagnosis of an ulcer, polycystic ovarian syndrome, and interstitial cystitis. I did have cysts on my ovaries, but one correct diagnosis out of three is a pretty low success rate. The gyno who did my pelvic exam said I had a bladder condition, prescribed legal speed, and sent me on my way.

  The first day on that stimulant was the night I became furious with myself in a conservatory practice room, blacked out (also known as having a dissociative fugue) and walked several miles out of town. When I came to, I called campus Safety and Security officers to drive out and pick me up. I got back to the dorm, popped two hydrocodone (my first attempt at self-medication), and stood outside of my room looking at the doorknob, feeling like there was a pane of glass between my outstretched hand and the door that I couldn’t possibly penetrate.

  At some point, I found out my stomach pain, combined with my psychological symptoms, could be bipolar disorder. I made an appointment with a psychiatrist, went in to be assessed, told him about my perfectly practical and achievable plan to hang myself in an abandoned barn I’d found with a ladder and an electrical cord, and he sent me to a psychiatric unit for violent offenders in Lorain, Ohio. I stayed for 4 days and then came home with a Neurontin prescription and no diagnosis.

  At 2:30 AM one night, Sophie got really sick and needed to go to the hospital overnight. The prescription speed and a missed night’s sleep started the true psychotic break, which you’ve heard all about. When I came to a moment of functionality around 4 pm the next day, I called my mom and said (again) “I’m not okay.” She told me to find someone to drive me to the airport at 5, that she would book a flight immediately, and to give her Sophie’s phone number.

  On the drive to the airport, the blue sky was heavily dotted with bright white clouds that had the same texture as my mom’s fluffy scrambled eggs.  I could hear them singing to each other. By that point in the day, my psychosis had completely enveloped me, to the point of adjustment. It wasn’t at all frightening; the heavens were singing to me. I am not a religious person, but my psychosis has frequently taken on a literalist interpretation of angels, Satan, spirits, hell, and heaven (so far).

  On the plane a few hours later, I was watching the Johnny Cash in-flight movie from the aisle seat. Next to me sat a man in his 40s with glasses, a button-down shirt, and khakis with a phone holster attached. Total white-guy dad. He was bouncing his 2-year-old son on his knee to distract and comfort the baby boy from popping ears and irritating confinement and boredom.

  About halfway through the movie, I started to see a red glow in my peripheral vision where the man was seated. I turned to look at him and his eyes glowed red. I could see red light surrounding him, and his hands grew long claws from the fingertips. He was still bouncing the baby boy on his knee, holding onto him tightly with those terrifying claws. I knew in my bones that I was sitting next to Satan. I didn’t know what to do. I called the flight attendant but was afraid to speak when she came to me. He was going to hurt that little boy, he was going to drag me to hell with him, and I thought about screaming for help, but couldn’t see how anyone else on the plane could possibly save me from Satan, himself. As I looked around in a panic, I felt the floor beneath my feet drop away, and when I looked down between my feet, I saw 30,000 feet of empty space between me and the carpet of blackness and lights that make up a city from above at nighttime. My feet were swinging freely. My seatbelt seemed a laughable precaution. No one else noticed, so I stared straight ahead with tears raging down my face. I thought it best just to try to act the same as everyone around me. Surely the judgment of the many was currently better than my own.

  I came home confused and in pain, still wanting to kill myself. My mom called every psychiatrist in town, and the nearest appointment was 6 months out. She convinced me that the fastest way to get help was to go to DePaul, the local psychiatric hospital. I seized a moment of doubt in my plan to off myself, and I told her to take me, quickly, before I changed my mind. We got in the car two minutes later. I didn’t even pack.

  I already had one horrifying hospital experience under my belt that included living with real-life murderers and armed guards stationed at locked doors holding rifles with two hands. The threat this new hospital posed was made more significant in my mind through projection. By about one hour in, I was a wreck. I went into my very first mixed-state episode. It was hell. Literal hell. Eternal, unyielding suffering. I had no idea that episodes pass. I’d never had one before. I thought this was life now, that I was finally just broken, and that I no longer had a choice to live. I was in hell.

  Suicide would make it stop. I knew that much. It was the only move I had left.

  I double wrapped my phone charger around my neck and wrapped the other end around the top hinge on the bathroom door. I kicked a chair out from under me, but the jerk didn’t break my neck, so instead, I started to suffocate. My vision started to go white when I saw a shadow and heard someone screaming “help!” Someone grabbed me around the middle and lifted me up to take the pressure off of my neck. I felt cold scissors against my throat and hear a snapping sound of then cutting my charger’s cord. I took one deep breath in and started screaming.

  I screamed. I wailed. I remember being partially removed, as if I was standing across the room, observing. I remember thinking that I sounded like a wounded wolf. I was screaming because they had cheated me. I had the answer. I even had the courage to commit to the answer. And they stole it. How could they do that to me? It seemed like the cruelest thing they could have possibly done.

           I lost Sophie a few days later when I got out of one-to-one observation. She broke up with me over the phone. When I called her and admitted to my attempt, she was rightfully terrified and overwhelmed. Mental illnesses had doomed and then ended the relationship, which is no one’s fault. I lost my mind and my first adult relationship at approximately the same time. This order of events is not unavoidable, but it’s also not uncommon. Many others who live with mental illness have experienced this themselves.

  Lately, I’m not doing so great. I’m having more severe symptoms than I’ve had in years and some of the things that are happening take me back to these memories. All of this happened over a decade ago. The 13th anniversary of my first suicide attempt is in 2 months.

  While the symptoms are becoming severe, the coping skills I have are now strong enough to provide some solace and structure. Still, even with great tools to use, it often hurts like hell, and I’m terrified of going back to the place I was in 13 years ago. I don’t want to have a full psychotic break, be hospitalized, attempt suicide, or lose my relationship.

  I have skills now. I have a support system. I have medical care. I have a partner in life. I have 13 years of experience in keeping myself alive. I have amassed a wealth of helpful components to cope with my illnesses.

  I have to fact-check. There are worse things than having a psychotic break. There are worse things than going to the hospital. There is no evidence that I will attempt suicide. There is no evidence that I will lose my relationship.

  Cope. Fact-check. Ask for help. Go to the doctor.

  I know what to do. I’ve done this before.

been back from traveling for five days now, and finally feeling over jet lag. as such, here’s an update.

weight & health: first day weighing myself in two and a half weeks was on august 3, and it was 199.7. went down a bit over the past few days but back there again today. means i pretty much maintained during my trip... it’s 1.5 pounds down since my last weigh-in in connecticut, but more importantly about 5-6 pounds down over the past five weeks of travel. fits in with my trend of about 4 pounds lost in june. both may and april weren’t as structured (only started tracking in mid-may, but know what i weighed in april... my heighest of 216) though i did start modifying my eating habits around march/april and stopped gaining weight around that time, if not before. scheduled a day of doctor’s appointments for yesterday and glad to get the ball rolling with that, though overall had a bit of a weird experience. gyno was great and everything’s 100% healthy there (pending pap smear results, which are anticipated to be fine) but general primary care doctor was just alright. he’s A’s doctor and she likes him. i like him, too, and i do think he’ll be good help when it comes to my weight loss journey. however, he didn’t quite listen to me about the extent of both my back pain and eczema. it sucks not feeling heard, especially by medical professionals, and especially when i’m already so fearful of it all.

blood test comes back later this week, so i’ll know exactly where i stand at that point. first weight loss appointment with him is scheduled for six weeks out. the scales at both appointments yesterday read me at exactly 200 (clothes on, obviously), so i’m glad that is my baseline for this work. a nice, even number.

i’m proud that i’ve lost over 15 pounds in the past 2 months and i do see some changes in my face and my upper body (shoulders & collar bone area). don’t see any changes in my arms yet (nor my stomach or anywhere else), but i’m getting there. haven’t eaten well since getting home (and ate a ton of bread on my trip, though walked enough that it didn’t impact me i guess?) so need to focus more on that.

relationship: time with A was so damn nice, and things feel so much better than before the trip. really hoping that the time together, and this time away, will make things smoother when she’s back here. really hoping that it wasn’t just an escape from our former difficulties, like a honeymoon of sorts. she was so helpful with my medical fears yesterday and we just finished up some really nice talks about the future today. i do feel closer to her than i have in a long while. i’m feeling hopeful. 

that said, i still need to be critical. in addition to a fear of this happiness masking over everything else, i am afraid of how she’s been self-sabotaging and what it means for her future, both in the immediate sense (doing well in school, finding a job, etc) and in the longer-term, more emotional sense (is she always going to do this? what’s going to happen when we’re that much more entangled?). 

anyway, another recent change in this realm is that we’ve officially started having conversations about where we are on the spectrum of relationship types. we’ve opened up to “mental exploration” with others, i.e. using dating platforms and flirting/talking to new people. we have not opened up to the physical or emotional exploration with others. i’m feeling a lot more free to check in with myself in terms of this, which is where her mindset was when she brought it up. that said, i’m still feeling unsettled about it both because i don’t want this to be something that creates distance between us or destabilizes our foundation, which is finally feeling strong again. i also am finding the whole flirting with people from dating app process to be daunting and tiresome. i’ve matched with a handful of people on tinder, but no one has messaged first. i do have messages from okcupid that seem worth responding to, but i’m just tired. i want someone to send me a short message filled with wit/banter. i don’t want a short “hey” or “you and your gf are sexy” message. i also don’t have it in me for a lengthy message right now. not until i build up that rapport with someone, at least. when i’m all caught up with other social media, though, i do find it nice to have yet another platform to mindlessly scroll/swipe through.

friendships: probably a lot to unpack here, but the real reason i started writing this post anyway is because i’ve been feeling unsettled about where i stand with HL and wanted to find a way to check in. just texted her and waiting for a response. i trust it’s fine but i have a sinking feeling it’s not and that the distance i feel is not just perceived but real. 

i have a lot of reflection i need to do about how i can learn to be a better friend to those i’ve created distance with. i have grieving to do with the friendships i’ve lost by letting those people down. i have to be real with myself here.

in terms of tangible, physical friendships in los angeles: i saw AS over the weekend and have plans in the work with both BL and NP. glad about that. thinking about reaching out to M&A, A’s friends who i’m friendly with too, while she’s not here. i’m also trying to find some free/cheap, low-key events to meet people. was just waiting until i had recouped a bit more for that.

work: while i worked during my trip, i have a ton of tasks i put off. i was feeling like i’d let down my boss/colleagues and took advantage of my flexible dynamic and ability to travel, so i’m using this week to step up and tackle all of these extra projects. haven’t done as much yet today as planned as i spent a lot of time talking to A, but i do feel focused and able to keep working for a few more hours. hoping to maximize my time working over the next few days.

need to start thinking about the job search again so i have things to talk through with A when she gets back home. wondering if i’ve just become complacent with my job. that said, i do still find enjoyment from it and love working remotely full-time for now. looking to change that at the same time that A finds a job. means we can time it to plan our future together. need to make sure the complacency doesn’t overrule my ability to succeed, though.

took A’s meds today (for the second or third time) and am really jiving with the way i feel. scared about that because we don’t have an unlimited supply but i feel so much more productive on them. don’t think any doctor would prescribe me with adhd meds, though, as that’s not my main issue. (that said, anxiety is, and maybe anxiety meds will also help me focus and not get too worked up over stuff? or too tired/depressed to do stuff?)

emotions: haven’t checked in with myself much during/after my trip, but i do know i’m feeling a post-travel slump worsened by being without A and in a place i don’t really have a thriving life. i’ll be going to florida in just a few weeks and not long after i’m back does she get back so i know this is temporary. but i do need to really check in with myself.

i also need to get a therapist. S hasn’t contacted me since much earlier in the summer... i think she’s leaving it to me to check in. i need to call the therapists i’ve found down here but i also may want to schedule with S when i’m back in the bay next month to visit.

My purse (along with car keys) was stolen a few weeks ago. I called Toyota to get an approximation as to how much it would cost to replace the keys (just over $350 for a remote and transmitter key). I figured the car should be rekeyed too since the thieves had my address. I went to Toyota to get a written estimate - they were having trouble printing off a written estimate and wrote it on a card - rekeying would be just over $350 so keys+rekeying = just over $700. My mom sent my dad today to get it written on company letterhead, etc. and he came back with an over $2,000 estimate - it looks like they actually want to pull the locks out and replace a computer??? So my mom is saying we're not putting in a claim because our insurance rates will increase (even though no one has said they would increase) in the meantime I have to worry about my car being stolen (I have a club on it), people going into it, etc. So, typically, would one's auto insurance rates increase after putting in a claim for theft? Does it make a difference if it's $700 or $2,000? I would just figure the insurance company wants your car to be as safe as you do so you don't have to claim even more for a stolen car.""
