Okay so I feel like I haven't seen anyone talking about this, but I have like. so many questions about Charles magic bag,,,,

Like how did he learn it? Did he just trial and error his way through for years? Edwin seems to imply that using the bag without knowing how has bad consequences. Did Charles just find a magic bag handbook one day?

Or why is Charles the only one who knows how to use it? Edwin says that it took Charles years to learn, and Charles had been by Edwin's side since the very beginning, yet Edwin knows nothing of how to use the bag himself. He said that if you don't know how to use the bag you get hurt, do you think either of them learned that the hard way? Why would there be this endless bag of items that Charles has and Edwin wouldn't also want to learn how to use it? Like I'm so confused at why Edwin wouldnt also want to make sure he could use it, or why Charles taught only himself how to do it.

How did they even get the bag? Did Charles just think "hey we always need like a bunch of stuff on cases, wouldn't it be cool if we had a bottomless bag?" and then just. taught himself how to make and use one? Or did they get it from a client as payment and then one of them had to learn to use it? Did Charles find a "how to make a bottomless bag" handbook on their adventures and decide it would be cool to make?

When they hide inside of it to hide from the tentacle thing in the Two Dragons episode, how does Edwin get inside without hurting himself? Because Edwin seems to imply even sticking your hand in would hurt you if you weren't Charles, yet he can climb inside of it? Is it merely the intent to grab something inside of it that hurts you?

And what are the rules of being inside of it? Is there a time limit? Like is it like a D&D thing where you run out of air after a while? Would that even effect them since they're ghosts? What is it like inside of there? Is it an entire pocket dimension that just looks like an actual place? Or is it just a black void they float in? Or are they even really corporeal in there?

The thing about cats is that while they don’t love swimming (generally), they love being near water. Something about sitting on the edge, watching patterns ripple through the reflections and listening to the eb and flow is magical. La Gran Gata spent more time than she wanted to admit, mesmerised by the dirty rivers of New York, silly aquarium videos, and naturally- the fountain owned by Em.

When Sofia was imbued with a bit of La Gran Gata’s magic, certain things affected her more than others. Her eyes were clearly most affected, as were her nails (they would not stop growing), and some features of her behaviour shifted. Obviously that was also the reason why she spent so much time hanging around Em’s fountain- no other reason. There was absolutely nothing else that kept drawing her to this place whenever she had a spare moment.

On a random strangely sunny day, Sofia found herself sitting on the ledge of the bethesda fountain, La Gran Gata beside her as they both lazily watched tourists adjust the lenses of their cameras, trying to get the perfect shot of Em. Considering Em was actually sitting right next to Sofia, scratching behind La Gran Gata’s ears with the gentleness only a statue could bring.

“So how’s this-” Sofia vaguely gestured to Em’s misty pedestal “happening with you right here?”

Em waved a hand towards the pedestal. “Umbral arcana? I admit I stopped worrying about it after a while, the intricacies of its magic are complicated and layered. It protects us- the magical world from the human world, and sometimes that means letting them take pictures of me while I’m off on my own adventures.”

Sofia tilted her head to better examine the mist. “It’s interesting that it can affect both human perception and that of digital items.”

“I’m still not sure how a camera works, so I don’t ask too many questions.” Em smiled.

“You think I ask too many questions?” She sat up, raising an eyebrow.

In between them, La Gran Gata meowed and placed her front paws on Sofia’s thighs as if to calm her down.

“Hm, no. I think it’s normal to want to ask a million questions when a new world is revealed to you. I do think you’re a curious cat.”

Sofia looked at La Gran Gata. “Do I have you to thank for this?” She scratched the cat underneath her chin.

“No, mija. That’s just you, you overestimate how much I affect your personality.”

“Curious cat is just an expression,” Em added. “If no one asked questions we wouldn’t learn anything.”

“But you do have some effect on me, right?”

“Yes, but not in the ways you think.” La Gran Gata climbed into her lap and put her front paws on Sofia’s shoulders. “For example; I’m not the reason why you started spending much more time here.” With that, La Gran Gata winked out of existence, off to take a nap in the bodega.

Sofia pinched the bridge of her nose and sighed. “Fuckin’ cat can’t even leave me in my ignorance for a bit, huh?”

Now it was Em’s turn to be curious. “What was that about?”

“So…” She bit the inside of her cheek, trying to figure out how to correctly express what she wanted to say. She averted her eyes, taking in the crowd still standing around the fountain instead. “Can we go somewhere, just anywhere else?”

Em shrugged and hopped down from the ledge, holding out a hand for Sofia. “Where would you like to go?”

Sofia jumped down and took Em’s hand, leading her to a more quiet area of central park. Well- a less crowded area of the park. She sat down next to a tree and picked at the grass as she tried to form the correct sentences. “So you know I’ve been- y’know- around here more and more. Just hanging out with you.”

“Yes?”

Feeling her heartbeat in her throat, she decided to pivot. “How you feelin’ about that?”

Em reached out, depositing a bunch of the grass Sofia had just pulled out into her lap with a crooked grin.

“Hey!” Sofia protested, brushing the grass off her jeans, tossing loose pieces at Em. “Who taught you to do that?”

“Years of observation. Humans love to pull at the grass when they want to fidget with something. Friends love to throw grass at each other.” Em gently tapped the soil. “Central Park’s grass has had a lot to endure.”

“You standin’ up for grass now?” Sofia smiled.

She rolled her eyes and laughed. “No, listen- let’s get back to it. To answer your question, I enjoy every second of the time you wish to spend with me.” When Sofia didn’t reply, she nudged her grass-covered knee. “Sofia, I’m not sure what this is about but I can assure you that whatever it is won’t make me like you any less.”

“I’m not sure of how to put this. When I learnt about this side of the city, I was very overwhelmed. Not just by the magic of it all but also obviously by grief, and by my frustrations with alcohol… But you were always there for me, just whenever I needed to chat- or company in general.” She ran a finger across the back of Em’s hand. “I uhm. I think that I’ve become attached to you in a different way now.”

Em flipped her hand, watching Sofia’s fingers dance across her palm now. “In what way?”

Sofia groaned. “You’re really goin’ to make me fuckin’ say it, huh?” She sat up on her knees, cupping Em’s face with both hands. “I like you, you stone angel. I’m not sure how that works or even if it’s fuckin’ supposed to work but I do.” She took a breath. “I like you.”

“Like in a…” Em laughed when Sofia slapped a hand to her forehead. “I’m kidding, I get it.” She took Sofia’s hands in hers. “I said whatever you had to tell me wouldn’t make me like you any less and I meant it, my dear. As far as Pete’s powers reach I could not have dreamt up something better.”

“Oh?” Sofia looked up at her, a small smile on her lips.

“While I don’t know how this would work-” she gestured at her stone body. “I’m willing to try.”

“Yeah… that’s a good question.” She moved a little closer, studying the intricate details of Em’s face. From the waves in her hair to the curve of her lips, everything was made so carefully as if the artist knew what Em would be.

Em brushed a finger along Sofia’s jawline, smiling. “Is is okay if I..?” She tapped Sofia’s lips with her thumb.

“Uhuh.” She smiled.

“Cool.” She kissed her.

If anyone in central park that day concentrated really hard on the women kissing beneath the large tree, they would find a spectral cat proudly watching from one of the lowest branches- its green and blue eyes twinkling.

Disclaimer! I'm still actively working on the intricacies of the TBA (oh that's a coincidental acronym 😂 maybe I stick with Saafa-verse like I did for so long...) magic system, so there will be some gaps, specifically once we get past the overarching idea.

First up! Some basic questions. You know what, why not make this interview-style, for flavor? Extra fun writing this.

First off, what are magic users called

All magic users are called witches, regardless of gender!

Who can use magic? How is magic given out or decided?

Magic isn't a genetic ability, or something gifted by a higher being. It's all learned! So anyone can use magic, but not everyone does. It's just like writing, for example; everyone can theoretically do writing, but not everyone chooses to pursue it.

What are the views on magic in this world?

Good question, Me! That largely depends on which country you're in, and who you're around. N'Gomo is entirely open to magic, while Ljosavatn (new, smoother name soon) has laws that make magic punishable by death. This is actually an important part of the plot.

Is all magic the same?

Definitely not! There are multiple types of magics a witch can focus on learning, but they arent limited to one type, either. This is the part that is actively in the works, but a few types of possible magic focuses are Necromatic magic, Healing magic, and Rift magic (ooh, mysterious). So far, there are main of supporting characters with focuses in each of these magic categories?

You mentioned focuses earlier, can you elaborate on that?

Woo, yes!! Since my magic system isn't one thing, but has different parts that make up a whole, I wanted a way to differentiate those kinds of magics and the witches who use them. The author Leigh Bardugo, for example, has different kinds of magic categories in her books, with cool conlang names for each one, Similarly to how the ATLA world has the four element types for their benders.

I wanted something like that, but also wanted to make sure my own version was unique, and focuses came to mind and fit super well! Plus, the word "focus" already has some magic connotation for us D&D nerds (a focus is an item with which a magic user channels their spells through, like a wand or a staff).

Anything else?

Yes! Focus isnt a total alternative to calling someone a Witch, as the scenarios for each would be different. If someone asks a Witch if they're a Witch, they would say they're just a Witch or that they're a [insert focus] Witch.

Ex:

"You. You're a Witch, yes?"

"Yes, ma'am, a Necromantic Witch."

If someone was asking what their focus is specifically, they would generally say they're a [insert focus] focus, since the Witch part is already heavily implied.

Ex:

"What's your focus? I never asked."

"Oh, I'm a Necromantic focus."

"Rift focus, myself. I do dabble in Healing, as well."

It's just another word to add some interest to a possibly plain term, and a way to maybe have some breaks from the word "witch," lol.

Never was there a day Lilith didn’t resort to the most foul games to torture kin and friend alike. She had always thoughts she was damned from birth and there was nothing that could change it, others that she’d been close to say it was the curse attached to her name. Her mother must have hated her, or perhaps sensed the evil present in her womb when she gifted her such a putrid title, one from the Bible no less. Lilith had always loved her for it, at least she came to the understanding and lived with it. For that, Lilith could never bring herself to harm her mother in any way. She instead would hope that one day her mother would realize her own power and devour her lover whom she brought the blond girl forth into this world with, lord knows he deserved it more than anyone. 

Family was never something she was too fond of save for her mother alone. Her father always came home stinking of alcohol and would then beat his mother in front of her and move on to the rest of her siblings. He always saved her for last. ‘And you, I don’t like the way you look at me with those beady little eyes. Like you wanna kill me. Why don’t I just beat you to the punch?’ He would always say. At the very least he had some sort of clarity on that, the girl had wanted him dead all her life. She’d even tried a few times and was beaten savagely for it.

As time went on Lilith began to view her mother as weak. How could she allow this foul vermin to impregnate her? If she had just used him for his worthless seed and was rid of him that would be more acceptable than this. No, her mother clung to him like he was the sole life force of the planet, she’d even told her that without him this family would be doomed. Back then people looked down on and shamed women who were not submissive to men, and Lilith couldn’t remember if they were even allowed to get divorces. Allowed, she’d see about that. If Lilith wanted something done it was going to be just that. Someone had to teach her mother how to be a mans equal, and since she was the only other woman in the household she supposed it would have to be her. 

She had no fear of blood by the time she turned 17, and that was evident when her poor mother discovered the body all savaged like it was. There was in fact no need to guess who may have done it. Her father had many enemies yes, but there was always that unspoken promise in her daughter’s eyes that spoke the end for her wretched father. The woman couldn’t even bring herself to weep, instead she silently thanked her daughter for being so brave. There was no respect like the respect given to a widow. 

The trip away from home would normally fill a girl as young as her with astonishment and joy, but the only thing she could think of was where and how she would gain power over those she despised. On her journeys she came across a small coven of witches which she eagerly joined. They accepted her with open arms, all having a similar story to her own of the cruelty of men. Without really realizing it she had begun to hate them as a gender all together, thinking they were only good for their seed and nothing more. It was women who were unafraid of the persecution they’d face if it were discovered they were doing magic in the dark. There was no need if they were to do it right.

Many a foe would fall beneath the tall grass of their estate. So many unmarked graves for those who would oppose them. She’d soon sense a sort of stagnation in the Coven, realizing there was more to be learned that they could not provide. It was then she knew it was time to depart, but when she was ready to do that she was swiftly reminded of the permanence of the sisterhood. She would in turn show them all the permanence of death.

A new thirst for blood then would envelop her upon her departure, leading her to lure in unsuspecting humans and lead them painfully, and methodically to their death. This game made the woman stronger despite common belief. She would up the stakes each time, moving from farm boys who crept into young women’s beds to policemen who knowingly arrested parties irresponsible; or just failed to do their duty. She’d even once murdered a member of their government for covering up a large conspiracy. Even that was starting to yield the same results, her cruelty being wasted on them she believed, so she’d try her hand at supernatural creatures. 

Curses were a wonderful thing when intermingled with the ones already apparent in their blood. In a way queer to her, they were almost just as easy as luring any human (which wasn’t easy at all). Everybody wanted something, and she was now in the position to give it to them. Of course it was never what they expected, and the game continued on until she met a vampire she’d dare say she fell in love with. 

Rosalie she’d whisper in her ear as she slipped under the covers and wrapped her warm arms around her cold body. There was something wonderful behind those grey eyes that saw more of this world than she’d ever imagined. But in the end she’d wanted something too, and it wasn’t her love it was release from this cruel world. They’d fought madly about it, Lilith not understanding why she would want to depart when she had someone who loved her so? Women were just the same as any man, and in her grief she finally gave into her request but not before getting something in return from her. She wanted to see with her own eyes why this world wasn’t worth living in when you had power and youth. She wanted to prove her wrong– but she’d have to be alive to see it. So instead of killing her she cursed her with slumber after she was bitten. She’d sleep until Lilith found what she was looking for, then she’d wake up her lover and show her the error of her ways and how she’d been oh so wrong about this wonderful world. She’d feign not having the power to kill her, or the heart whichever served her best. Her heart had already suffered for this love, and she’d never be that weak again so it was best she sever those ties. 

Hundreds of years later the woman still had not tired of this world, and she’d far surpassed the age at which Rosalie had been. The new connection she had with her victims was the thing that gave her pleasure. Instead of just observing their agony she could taste it. Old pastimes die hard it would seem, and with all of this time she has discovered new games she liked to play, and new players she’d introduce to fill the black void of her empty heart.

Good book, but Trekkies beware. I'm being nice giving 4 stars. It's really 3.5, but I'll round up. The reason I'm not as thrilled by this book as his daughter and the other raters are is he got A LOT of things wrong about Star Trek. Due to the fact that he was the make up guru for Star Trek for 18 years many of the folks who'll want to buy this book are Trek fans and he got a lot of basic things wrong about those shows. For example Sela was Half Human/Half Romulan. Mr. Westmore stated she was half Vulcan. He got the show that Tuvok was on wrong. Marina Sirtis was not in the original series (Majel Barrett was). There were a few more items, but these stand out for me. It was an enjoyable book and very interesting to learn about the history of movies through the eyes of the Westmore clan, but as a Trekkie the errors lost some points for me. Go to Amazon
