Well, this was a big piece of work, hah

I took a break from RW and decided to draw something nostalgic

Actually I've been stuck with this idea for two years now and I'm glad I finally found the strength to do something about it. Thanks for inspiration from one good man)

Long story short

In this AU autobots and deceptions are two unions of different tribes: mudwings, seawings and sandwings for the firsts and icewings, nightwings, rainwings and Pantala tribes for seconds. Skywings doesn’t exist anymore (because we need someone who takes place of predacons).

People are just people or scavenger if you prefer. And instead of whole cosmos it’s just two mainlands.

- Optimus Prime - I kinda like tfp Optimus. So formidable, powerful and mysterious but really gentle at the same time. And mud/sea combo works here in the best way. As the representation of two main tribes union and strong father/brother figure for team members.

I also think he might be an animus (but don’t use his magic often, especially for killing someone)

- Ultra Magnus - Pure Icewing already will be great for him, but I gave him part of seawing so he could be more like an Optimus. But instead of being softer and warmer, Magnus is more cold and pragmatic version of him. A character who sees other dragons not as close allies and friends but as ordinary soldiers.

- Ratchet - Yeah, the seawing would fit him better, but i just don’t know how to make the colors work here sooo… he’s a weak-fire mudwing. Like a skywing, but mudwing. Why not. Make sense with his lack of guns in origin. I think he’s design can be better, and maybe I’ll remake it.

I love his arc of recognizing people as equals and especially his interactions with Raphael. I think Ratchet often read him scrolls about history and magical artifacts.

- Bulkhead - No surprises here - mudwing fit him perfectly. I think that the Wreckers could been a big and strong mudwing troops, and Bulkhead was a bigwings in such a one. He is lost a lot of his siblings during the war, and therefore tries with all his might to protect the new members of his family. I absolutely adore his relationship with Miko and Jackie, so for me he’s one of the cutest character, and I tried to make his forms round and soft.

- Bumblebee - I know that majority draw him as a hivewing, but in that case the most logical for him will be a night/sandwing. Literally, autobots get their own Sunny)

I think in this version with his lack of a voice he could communicate using sign language or some variation of aquatic.

- Arcee - Also nothing special - she is a seawing. I originally wanted to give her a helmet but it was too hard to draw. Just like Sunny she was born pretty small and now even younger dragons can be bigger than her. I’m pretty sure she is old enough to have seen Bumblebee when he was a dragonet, so she's literally like an older sister to him.

Actually she really gives me a Queen Glory vibes with her sarcasm and dangerous beauty, so rainwing might fit her as well.

- Smokescreen - I used to think he was just a cringe, but now I realize he's a pretty interesting and realistic character. Like Ultra Magnus, I wanted to make him look like Optimus, only this time Smoke is more of a younger and much more irresponsible version of him. I think in this version (being part rainwing) he's trying to mimic Optimus's coloring using same red, blue and pale-gray shades.

- Wheeljack - The scruffy boy! I think in this version he could be Bulkhead's "adopted sibling", so they are really close to each other. And, because he spent most of his life with Bulkhead, it's harder for him to get close to other tribes and dragons.

Painting scales to keep canonical colors is kinda cheating, but for this dude it totally works. He should have a pretty bright appearance with all those scars and bright spots.

Cliffjumper - Ohoh… this poor guy. I didn't even think of putting him here, but I like his smug face too much. Even making his scales darker than the original, it's still too brightly colored for mudwing. He probably jokes about it a lot, saying that his ancestors were skywings.

I really like his dynamic with Arcee, and it's a shame we haven't seen much of their relationship. I think I need to do something cute about that.

I’m gonna draw a dragon again soon so quick rant

You know one thing I REALLY hate in wings of fire? There’s a tiny, little inconsistency throughout the books. And that’s the sizes of scavengers to the dragons. Because I’m just gonna say it here: the “canonical” size comparison such as the picture below makes NO SENSE considering how everything else is just conveniently a decent size for a dragon. And trust me, we WILL get to it being “canonical”

A mango can fit a dragons palm when it should clearly be tiny as the actual love I have for this book series. What about cows? How come they’re described to be massive enough to feed a whole dragon? They should be like a candy bar to those things! And don’t get me started on how completely unrealistic it is for a sloth to be big enough to wrap itself around a rainwing’s neck. Like that must be some pretty massive sloths around that should ABSOLUTELY be massive compared to a scavenger.

Also the funny part about that pic I showed you? Yeah well scrap that cuz that’s also pretty inaccurate. We were to believe in the VERY EARLY books that scavengers are like hamsters to dragons. Literally the size of their right toe. Also also the fact that Smolder is like 50 years old AND also also also the fact that dragons keep growing as they age, then that just tells us that these scavenger are way, WAY bigger to these dragons. Especially if Flower here is the size of his FOREARM!

“Oh, but the islands are more suited for dragons! Of course everything will be big!” You cry out! Yet it is implied that scavengers were the dominant race BEFORE The Scorching, and even if that was a whole lotta years ago, then that must’ve been the FASTEST evolution process in the south coast yet.

And it STILL gets worse! Scavengers, even after being concluded to be the size of hamsters to dragons, Tui is constantly and very much maliciously switching the sizes of these scavengers to fit the plot because she has never figured out what she ever wants. Winter keeps Bandit in what’s implied to be some.. hamster cage? Okay, so he must be pretty damn tiny, which makes some amount of sense considering he’s probably a… teenager… I mean, okay, sure, whatever, I’ll let it slide- wait! But so is Winter! Winter is bigger than Qibli, sure, but neither of them are any bigger than other fully grown dragons! Winter is a teenage dragonet! So how small is Bandit?? How small is he compared to a- and let me emphasize- a FULL GROWN DRAGON!!!?? What!!!

And by the way, have you SEEN the actual cover of Dragonslayer??? Look at that and TELL me how completely unrealistic it is if we are to believe scavengers are the size of a dragon’s forearm

Also also also ALSO in book 14 Daffodil is shown tossing and catching Bumblebee who had just hatched and this is just unnatural and biologically confusing to think about. HOW is Daffodil bigger than a newborn dragonet? And this makes even LESS SENSE when you realize that it’s been implied that a newborn dragonet is the same size as a regular sized scavenger ACCORDING to the fact that it’s really easy to pick up a baby dragonet by the hand COMPARED to the size of Flower to Smolder’s hand in the picture??? HOW? Tell me how, Tui!! How is this possible!! And don’t you dare tell me that “oh! Pantalan dragons are smaller than Pyrian!” Because that is just ludicrous to me. I will LAUGH at you if you tell me otherwise because that is just a cheap way to excuse any of this. There has NEVER been any quote of Luna or any other Silkwing, Hivewing, or Leafwing being significantly shorter than a Pyrian dragon. 

I should really cut to the chase but I’ve… never liked Tui’s writing. I don’t like that she avoids criticism of her writing. She has great ideas and is so creative in the world of WOF but for most works she’s either rushing it or coming up with something on the spot. And neither are good if they’re not thought out well enough! All of the endings to the arcs are bad and poorly thought out. The logic in how specific stuff works is just terrible. Arc 3 is just a NOTHING arc full of NOTHING characters (except maybe Snowfall and some of the Leafwings they’re… fine). I’m sorry but as much as I “pretend” to like WOF, and I REALLY mean it when I say “pretend”, but this book makes me get an aneurysm the more I really look deep into it. I am beyond terrified of looking into the guidebook because I KNOW there will be inaccuracies, confusion, and Tui slamming down whatever ideas she has without a second thought. I already know she put the weird and unnecessary mudwing mating rituals!!

So what do you have on Dust already?

The obvious spot in canon for a sandwing/nightwing hybrid is Thorn having more than one egg, so Sunny could have a sibling. Dune getting told she’d had one and being shown it and Six Ckaws the same and getting shown Dust’s egg in a separate location, as Thorn was being extra careful, would be a straightforward way to write in an origin point? There’s also the opportunity to easily justify Dust being an animus with an animus father that way too if it’s what you’re going for! Dust would then have a way to feasibly gain skills and contacts/companions if you wanted Dust to subsequently travel somewhere etc and not be a soldier in the succession crisis.

There’s no pressure with the above paragraph but I thought I may as well attempt to be helpful as design wise it looks like his mother was a sandwing (since there’s the whole hybrids taking heavily after the parent who laid them thing). Who knows it may be entirely off base but that’s why I’m curious if there is anything you have so far?

(also Dust with a sibling or parent, whoever you think they may be, or just a small hatchling dust, could be adorable if you wanted to make a drawing from this)

While that is indeed an interesting idea (seriously, I would love something like that), all of my OCs exist in a separate universe from the canon plots. This essentially means that none of the canon characters, past or present, exist in this universe. For example, in the universe I have created for my OCs, instead of Clearsight being the common ancestor for Hivewings, it is instead a group of Pyrrhian dragons (mostly Nightwings with a couple of others sprinkled in) that found Pantala. This "alternate universe" gives me more freedom to mold the story and world as much as I like.

And, to answer your question on what I have so far for Dust and his background. Dust is the child of Rattlesnake (Mother, Sandwing) and Sandstorm (Father, Nightwing/Sandwing hybrid). He is mostly Sandwing, which is why he doesn't really have much Nightwing traits beyond some darker coloring, his bright blue irises, and the star scales on his wings. As for backstory and such, all I know for sure is that, for some reason I haven't decided yet, Dust despises his mother. I also know that he is currently a traveler, wandering between the kingdoms of Pyrrhia and doing odd jobs to make ends meet.

n and cyn who is named cicada. her name wasn't cicada before but she changed it to be more hivewing like in inspiration of tessa who's named tawny, i was legit gonna name her tsetse but then i forgor lady tsetse exists. i had fun with trying to experiment with funky posing. figuring out damages and restrictions on everyone was also cool. this image is a SLIGHT error because something happens at their metamorphosis so they shouldn't have wings but now i changed it as a second metamorphosis.

Interlace: Some other Options

Yo! Are you an artist that doesn’t like drawing humans for any reason? Don’t like the idea of just drawing some guys and want to do something special? Interlace, for me, has been pretty fun because I consistently take it and go “oooh but how would it work if they were x?” So here’s a selection of some of the AUs that you could draw instead of the base stuff. Note that for a lot of these, I don’t have designs fully figured out, so you’re free to take artistic liberties and fill in the unfinished parts yourself, just make sure it’s still the same character in the end :) These are: Furry | Dragons (WoF) | Pokemon Mystery Dungeon | Pokemon (Trainers)

THIS one has a lot more information! Copying this from an old post about them “[Sam] Braconid (they/he/she) is a Hivewing. He has a personal weapon, a proboscis that shoots out from under his tongue with some kind of toxin, which causes initial numbness then unbearable pain after hours. They gain animus magic sometime through the story, thanks to The Curse, which also makes them significantly more obsessed with Oleander to an unhealthy amount. She doesn't use her weapon and keeps her animus magic hush hush.

[August] Oleander (he/him) is a Silkwing-Nightwing Hybrid. He starts off the story without any abilities, since despite being 18 (assuming its like late 20s equivalent based on dragon maturity) he has not gone through metamorphosis yet. He does, and afterwards his wings are odd, he has regular silk, and can breathe a bit of fire which is weirdly linear and kinda... sticks. The Curse just kinda loosens his

inhibitions. Just a little.

[Leila] Gloam (she/her) is a Nightwing, who was hatched under a single moon and can read minds. She is extremely nosey and this power is not the best for her. The Curse makes her rampant need to know and curiosity much worse, staining her eyes green, opening more across her scales, and letting her mind reading powers grow until she can split open a mind and look inside like peeling an orange.

[Gabi] Lobo (he/she) is a Sandwing. Like legitimately Lobo's unremarkable. The Curse makes him a little more angry that's about all.

[Izze] Juniper (she/her) is a Leafwing, who has a little bit of leafspeak. Not much. The most she can do is really cheap tricks, not very useful as a weapon. Though Juniper is on a whole other level, seeing as Juniper is immune to The Curse SOMEHOW.

Some character background. Braconid, Oleander, and Juniper's families and ancestors back 250+ years are Pyrrhian. Despite their tribes being from Pantala, they are Pyrrhian dragons in all other ways.

Braconid and Juniper were invited to the prestigious Jade Mountain Academy, and were both put in the Copper Winglet. They got on like a house on fire and when they graduated, moved close to home in Colony. There they started writing scrolls together. They mostly write on draconic folk tales, legends, myths, and most strikingly supposed supernatural encounters. Braconid does most research, Juniper comes up with ideas and handles writing. In public appearances, Braconid acts as the grumpy skeptic and Juniper as the charismatic believer.

Half of Braconid's job is spending a lot of time in Pyrrhian libraries, and the library in Colony is the biggest on the continent. This is where Braconid met Oleander.

Oleander, with no wings, has been left at a major disadvantage. He was hatched just outside Colony, and hasn't gotten the chance to travel further since the ability to fly is kinda important for crossing a continent. So he's stayed in Colony. He works at the library as a librarian, and met Braconid on his walks to work. It started out slow, but they over the years fell in love and now live together. Oleander appreciates that Braconid never pitied him, only trying to be accommodating.

Working at the library, one other coworker convinced the librarians to have game nights every so often, which is how Oleander gets closer to Gloam, the head librarian. Gloam completes her duties, but is well known for getting lost in research of things she finds interesting. She was hatched in Colony, and has seen most of Pyrrhia, just finding Colony the most comfortable place for her.

Lastly for background would be Lobo. Lobo is from the southern side of the desert, close to the mountains, where the sand gets dark and almost red. She joined Queen Dawn's army at 6 (once again, age weird assuming 15-17 here), thinking it would give him the chance to help others. After a few years she figured out she was wrong, and deserted, fleeing back home. He quickly feared being caught by a patrol and moved outside the Sand Kingdom to Colony to avoid court marshall. Lobo now is a gossip columnist, hot on the drama of Colony. On the side he likes to study strange phenomenon and old stories, and runs into Juniper and Braconid on that front. She hates them.”

after realizing all the flaws in wof, like the toxicity of the parings in the first series and basically everything in the third series, i wanted to make it better! so here’s a timeline of what my au is. bonus animation at the end! also, i haven’t read these books in a while. so if i get anything wrong i apologize!

3000’s AS After Darkstalker was stuck in the mountain, Clearsight spent her days exploring the wilderness and visiting Fathom. She takes interest in the study of animals and the moons. She takes note on how the tide changes depending on what moon is out, and the shape of it. She also makes the realization of how NightWing dragonets get their powers based on the moons. Depending on the moon and it’s pull, the dragonet would be pulled to that direction. Although she doesn’t know how, it connects to the powers. Questioning the pull of the moons, something hit her on the head. It was a ball that a dragonet dropped while playing. It all clicked after that. Her studies became famous across the continent.

First Series Peril, after learning that Clay and his friends are stuck, decides to help all of them. Although Tsunami has suspicions of her, she eventually learns to trust her. When Glory sprays venom on Scarlet, Peril helps everyone escape. When they get to the sea Peril introduces herself to Glory. Glory and everyone thanked Peril for her help. Never been thanked before, Peril got a little emotional. Peril wanted to stay with them, and Clay agreed.

Tsunami’s book is mostly the same, but with the inclusion of Peril. Coral is extremely suspicious, but in the joy of Tsunami coming back, she ignores it for her daughter.

Since Peril is a major fire hazard, Clay takes her to find a cave to hideout in. They find one near Jade Mountain, and Clay stays with her for a while to teach her how to hunt. Meanwhile, Glory does all the normal stuff she’s supposed to do in her book. But instead of the weird and creepy romance in the og book with Deathbringer, she’s seen more with Tsunami. They have a moment the night they try to catch Deathbringer. They talk about how disappointed they are with their families, and about missing Clay. Starflight still disappeared at the end of the book, and Glory became queen.

Clay came back during Starflights book and the rest of the story went on the same.

Now, the brightest night is the one i forgot about the most lol, so i’m just going to say everything went on the same but with Peril.

Second Series I don’t really have a problem with this series, so i’m not going to change a lot. A lot is the same in Peril’s book, but without her being possessive of Clay. She loves all of her friends equally, and even though she has a crush on Clay, she doesn’t let that change her opinion on the others. She’s especially close to Sunny and Starflight. She’s taken a liking to reading what she can from afar. Turtle is asexual, Moon and Kinkajou end up together, Qibli and Winter don’t end up together yet, but is implied.

Third Series I haven’t come up with a story yet, but since Clearsight never came to Pantala, the BeetleWings are still around. There aren’t any Hivewings to worry about, but Silkwings are still around. They have sharper talons and can have a small chance at leafspeak.
