can you, perhaps, do an idol! jungwon x reader fanfic? the setting would be reader accidentally texting jungwon and the reader is an engene as well, actually, but then reader and won keep talking but he doesn't reveal he is an idol until later!! reader could be in the industry as like a staff or smth!
Sent, Delivered, Loved

pairing: idol! Jungwon x staff! reader
synopsis: As a hardworking staff member at HYBE, the last thing you expected was to accidentally text the wrong number in the middle of a busy day. But instead of a confused reply, the person on the other end kept the conversation going. He was funny, easy to talk to, and somehow, you found yourself looking forward to his messages. You didnât know his name, his face, or even his voice but you liked him. Which was ridiculous, right?
Oh, and the person you were texting? Yeah. It was Jungwon. THE Jungwon from enhypen.
author's note: Thank you for the amazing request, Anonie! I must say, it took me a whole month to finish this, but it was definitely worth it. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it. Happy reading, everyone! đ
warning: This is just for the plot and should never be taken seriously. Do NOT text random strangers đ and donât ever fall for someone just through texting. Mentions of cursing and also slight angst.

You: bro wtf where r u???
You angrily jabbed at your screen. It was late, you were exhausted, and your friend, your so-called reliable colleague, was missing in action when you needed them most.
You: i swear to god if u left me to deal with this alone iâm blocking u forever.
A few seconds passed, and then-
Unknown Number: uh⊠hi??
You frowned. That wasnât the reaction you were expecting.
You: ???
You: donât play dumb. u know what u did.
Unknown Number: i actually donât. i think u have the wrong number??
Your eyes widened.
Oh.
OH.
You immediately scrolled up, checking the number you had just texted, only to realize that you had completely messed up one digit in your rush.
You: âŠomg wait. ur not Jiho?
Unknown Number: pretty sure iâm not.
You: oh my god kill me now. iâm so sorry.
Unknown Number: lmao itâs cool. what did this guy do to deserve ur wrath tho??
You sighed and debated whether or not to answer. But at this point, youâd already embarrassed yourself. Might as well go all in.
You: he bailed on me. we were supposed to finish this event setup for work but guess whoâs suddenly âbusyâ đ
Unknown Number: damn. fake friend behavior.
You: RIGHT?? like i love him but i will fight him.
The typing bubble appeared, then disappeared. Then, it appeared again.
Unknown Number: sounds like a rough job. must be intense working in the industry.
You blinked at your screen. That was⊠a little specific.
You: wait, howâd u know itâs the industry??
Unknown Number: u mentioned an event setup. unless ur hosting birthday parties on a tuesday night, i figured.
You: touché.
Unknown Number: so what do u do?
You hesitated for a moment. It wasnât like this was confidential information, but stillâŠshould you be talking about work with a total stranger? Then again, you had already gone on a rant about your missing-in-action coworker, so what harm would a little more do?
You: just staff stuff. event coordination, assisting with schedules, making sure idols donât get lost on the way to their own stages. u know. the usual.
Unknown Number: sounds like a nightmare.
You: it is <3
You chuckled, shaking your head at how easy it was to talk to this person.
Unknown Number: u must meet a lot of idols then.
You sighed.
You: yeah but itâs not as exciting as u think. theyâre just people. some r nice, some r annoying, some act like they donât know what a clock is.
Unknown Number: LOL. any favorites?
You raised an eyebrow at that.
You: what, r u an idol fan?
Unknown Number: maybe.
You: ok mysterious.
Unknown Number: u didnât answer tho.
You hummed and think.
You: idk. if i had to pick⊠maybe enhypen? theyâre cool.
A beat of silence. Then,
Unknown Number: good taste.
Weird. Before you could think too much about it, another message popped up.
Unknown Number: anyway, u still mad at ur friend or did u forgive him?
You rolled your eyes.
You: still mad. he better buy me food.
Unknown Number: solid plan. u deserve compensation.
You: exactly!! u get it.
And just like that, the conversation flowed on, stretching far past the frustration that started it. You didnât know who this person was, but they were easy to talk to, and for some reason, you didnât mind keeping the conversation going.
đ«
Over the next few weeks, your accidental text became a daily habit. You didnât know why, but talking to this stranger was easy. Maybe it was because he had no expectations of you. He wasnât a coworker, a superior, or an idol to impress. He was just some guy who sent back sarcastic texts and asked surprisingly thoughtful questions.
And for Jungwon, it was the opposite.
For the first time in a long while, he got to be a normal person. Not Jungwon, leader of Enhypen. Just some random guy in your messages. He didnât have to worry about his image or if he was saying the right thing. You didnât treat him differently. You teased him, called him bro, and sent blurry dinner photos.
And he liked it.
Maybe he never corrected you when you called him a nobody. Perhaps he looked forward to your messages more than he should.
Maybe thatâs why he didnât tell you the truth.
đ«
You groaned as you dropped onto a chair in the break room. You are completely drained, and the past few hours have been horrible. Running back and forth between different rooms, handling last-minute requests, and nearly getting run over by a staff member pushing a cart too fast. At this point, your legs were made of jelly, your back ached, and your only source of comfort was-
You: listen here, u lil gremlin. i am suffering.
Unknown Number: ???
Unknown Number: what did i do this time đ
You: EXIST. why am i here working my ass off while u get to sit there and breathe??
Unknown Number: maybe bc u have a job and iâm just a mysterious, incredibly cool stranger on the internet
You: mysterious, incredibly cool GREMLIN.
You: actually no. goblin. u give goblin energy.
Jungwon almost choked on his water. Goblin??
Unknown Number: EXCUSE ME.
Unknown Number: what part of me gives goblin energy???
You: idk. just a vibe. like a smug little goblin who laughs at my suffering.
Jungwon did, in fact, laugh at that. He leaned back in his chair, shaking his head.
Unknown Number: ok but real talk. whatâs making u suffer this time
You: running around hybe like a headless chicken. setting up for another event. also why do idols need so many rooms. just share a table or smth smh.
Jungwon raised a brow.
Hybe.
So, you worked at Hybe. That confirmed it. You were in the same building as him, probably passing by his team without even realizing it.
Unknown Number: sounds rough. u need a raise tbh.
You: RIGHT?? finally someone with common sense.
Unknown Number: goblin says u should go get a snack or smth before u pass out.
You sighed before standing up and walking toward the nearest vending machine.
You: fine. but only bc goblin said so.
Jungwon grinned. He could get used to this nickname.
đ«
You still didnât know his real name, and he still hadnât told you what he did for a living. But weirdly enough, you didnât mind.
One evening, after another long day of work, you flopped onto your bed and grabbed your phone.
You: goblin. tell me something random about u.
Unknown Number: hmm. i like cats.
You: ok well thatâs basic. try again.
Unknown Number: wow ok. rude.
Unknown Number: fine. i used to do taekwondo when i was younger.
You: woah. thatâs kinda cool. do u still remember any moves?
Unknown Number: maybe. depends. why? u planning to fight me?
You: depends. are u annoying today?
Unknown Number: always.
You rolled your eyes and smiled to yourself.
Unknown Number: ok my turn. tell me something random about u.
You: hmm. i can survive on just ramen and coffee for a whole week.
Unknown Number: that is not something to brag about.
You: shh. survival skills.
Unknown Number: more like self-destruction skills.
You laughed.
It was weird how easy it was to talk to him. Even without knowing what he looked like or what he did, you felt like you could tell him anything.
And somehow, you got the feeling that he felt the same way.
As you continued texting, an idea popped into your head.
You: btw. iâm giving u a nickname.
Unknown Number: oh? should i be concerned?
You: yes. but itâs happening anyway.
You changed his contact name and took a screenshot.
You: congrats. ur now âgoblinâ in my phone. [image attached]
Goblin: goblin again???? why.
You: idk u give me goblin vibes.
Goblin: i donât know if i should be honored or offended.
You: both.
Goblin: âŠfair.
You grinned to yourself. Yeah, âGoblinâ suited him just fine.
đ«
It was ridiculous.
You groaned and buried your face in your hands. This was getting out of control and liking someone youâd never seen. Someone you only knew through texts and calls? It was wild. But talking to Goblin had somehow become the best part of your day.
It wasnât just his humor or the way he matched your sarcasm. It was the way he listened. The way he remembered small details. He never made you feel like you were talking too much, even when you went on long-winded rants about work.
And that was the problem.
Because now, you were catching feelings for someone who was like a ghost. What the fuck?
You sighed and stared at your phone.
You: goblin. tell me something.
Goblin: what kind of something?
You: something about you. anything.
Goblin: hmm. okay. i like late-night drives.
You: oh? fancy. what else?
Goblin: i sing a lot, but only when iâm alone.
You smiled.
You: what if ur actually really good but no one knows?
Goblin: oh, people know.
You paused, eyebrows furrowing.
You: ?? do u perform or smth?
There was a long pause.
Goblin: nah⊠letâs say iâve had some practice.
You stared at the screen. You felt an odd feeling. But before you could ask more, he changed the subject.
And this was the pattern.
Youâd ask about him, heâd give vague answers. It wasnât like he was lying. He wasnât telling you everything.
Meanwhile, Jungwon was losing his mind.
He liked you. Way more than he should.
He knew he should tell you the truthâŠthat he wasnât just some random guy but an idol, an Enhypen member, someone you admired without realizing he was the same person you texted every day.
But how was he supposed to do that without making you feel betrayed?
It didnât help that you unknowingly talked about him all the time.
You: work was chaos today. my team had to set up for an engene event, and guess what? i had to carry a life-sized jungwon cutout.
Goblin: oh? lucky u. heâs pretty cool.
You: pls. i had to carry his smug face up three flights of stairs. not fun.
Goblin: bet he was judging u the whole way.
You: EXACTLY. i could hear him in my head like âhurry up, bitch.â
Jungwon nearly choked on his drink.
You: i mean, i love him, but he def gives rich, spoiled cat vibes.
Goblin: wow. tell me how u really feel.
You: LMAO SORRY. no but fr, i respect him a lot. he works so hard.
Goblin: yeah⊠he really does.
Jungwon smiled to himself.
But the longer he kept the truth from you, the worse it felt.
One day, he was going to have to tell you.
He just didnât know how.
đ«
You had one job. Just one.
Donât freak out. Donât stare. Be professional.
Yet, here you were, standing in the same hallway as enhypen. Your heart was racing.
You hadnât even meant to run into them. You were trying to deliver some documents to another department when you turned a corner, and bam! almost crashed straight into Jungwon himself.
âAh, sorry!â You quickly stepped back and bowed.
âItâs okay,â he replied casually.
You kept your head down, gripping the files in your hands. You knew the rules. Staff werenât supposed to interact too much with idols unless necessary. So, you did what you always did. You kept moving, not making eye contact.
But the moment you were out of sight, you whipped out your phone.
You: BRO WTF I JUST BUMPED INTO ENHYPEN HELP
Goblin: oh? ur alive?
You: BARELY. I almost DIED. I ran straight into Jungwon.
Goblin: sounds like a skill issue tbh.
You: SHUT UP. Anyway, I had to act normal and not fangirl. Pain.
Goblin: so u saw Jungwon up close, huh? thoughts?
You: heâs⊠really handsome actually like stupidly handsome.
Jungwon, reading the text, blinked.
Wait.
Something clicked in his head.
You just said you bumped into Enhypen.
His eyes narrowed slightly as he thought back to earlier.
A staff member had walked past them, avoiding eye contact. He hadnât paid much attention, but now that he thought about itâŠ
That had been you.
Jungwonâs breath hitched.
Holy shit.
You were the staff member he had occasionally seen around the company. Heâd thought you were pretty before, but it never crossed his mind that you were you.
Now, everything made sense. The things you ranted about, your schedule, and the way you always seemed to know too much about his events.
He grinned to himself.
Goblin: so⊠if u had to rank the members by looks, where would jungwon be?
You: pls donât expose me but top 1 actually. his visuals are insane irl.
Jungwon nearly dropped his phone.
đ«
Ever since Jungwon pieced together your identity, he couldnât help but pay more attention whenever he saw you at the company.
It wasnât full-on stalking. No, he wasnât that creepy. But he started noticing little things.
Like how you always ran around, papers in hand, sometimes looking stressed and sometimes smiling at your coworkers. How you always carried an energy drink in the morning, eyes barely open as you dragged yourself through the halls. How you always pulled out your phone at random moments to text him.
And, most of all, how you never once looked at him.
Jungwon found it amusing. You had no idea that the same person you were texting as âGoblinâ was now actively looking for you in a crowd.
He casually walked by your usual routes, trying to confirm his suspicions. If you were near, heâd glance discreetly, watching your reactions. You were always professional, always busy, always avoiding unnecessary attention.
But then, one day, he decided to test his theory.
Exhausted, you were standing near the entrance, rubbing your temples as another staff member spoke to you. You were frustrated, probably from another long day of work.
Jungwon, a few steps away, discreetly pulled out his phone and typed.
Goblin: u alive?
A second later, your phone vibrated in your pocket.
Jungwon didnât even need to guess. The way your entire demeanor changed was all the confirmation he needed. Your tired frown softened. Your lips curled into a small smile.
Bingo.
Now he knew it was 100% you.
Later that night, he picked up his phone again.
Goblin: so, whenâs ur funeral?
You: idk but work is definitely killing me first.
Goblin: want me to fight ur boss?
You: pls. throw hands.
Jungwon chuckled to himself. Oh, if only you knew.
đ«
It was late. You sat on your bed, staring at your phone screen. Without thinking too much about it, you opened your messages.
You: Goblin, you up?
A few seconds passed before the typing bubble appeared.
Goblin: For you? Always. Whatâs up?
You hesitated. You werenât usually the type to unload your emotions onto others, but something about himâŠabout thisâŠfelt safe.
You: Iâm just tired. Really tired.
You: Sometimes I feel like no matter how hard I work, no one actually sees it.
You: Like, I put in all this effort, and itâs just⊠expected. Nothing special. And if I mess up even a little, suddenly itâs a big deal.
You stared at your screen, debating if you should delete the message, but a reply came in before you could.
Goblin: I know exactly how that feels.
That made you pause.
You: You do?
Goblin: Yeah.
Goblin: Itâs like⊠the pressure never stops. People only see the results, not the work behind it. And when you succeed, itâs just âas expected.â But when you fail? Thatâs when they notice.
That was oddly specific.
You: Exactly. Like, can someone just acknowledge how exhausting it is??
Goblin: You deserve that acknowledgment. Even if no one else says it, I will: Youâre doing amazing. And I mean that.
A small smile tugged at your lips despite the frustration.
You: Thanks, Goblin. That means a lot.
Goblin: Anytime.
A comfortable silence settled between you two. Then,
Goblin: Can I tell you something too?
You sat up a little straighter.
You: Of course.
A few seconds passed before he responded.
Goblin: Sometimes I feel like people donât actually know me. They see what they want to see. They have all these expectations, and I try to meet them, but at the end of the day⊠I wonder if anyone would still like me if I wasnât what they expected.
You stared at the message, something about it making your heart ache a little.
You: That sounds lonely.
Goblin: It is. But I guess Iâve gotten used to it.
Your fingers hovered over the screen keyboard before you started typing.
You: Well, I donât know about them, but I like you. Just as you are. Even if youâre secretly a weirdo who texts strangers in the middle of the night.
There was a pause, then-
Goblin: Wow. I was about to be all deep and emotional, and you just had to call me a weirdo.
You laughed softly.
You: Iâm just saying, youâre pretty cool. Whoever you are.
You didnât realize it, but on the other side of the screen, Jungwon stared at your message for a long time. He felt something that was terrifying.
Because for the first time in a long while, he felt seen. And he wasnât sure if he was ready for that.
đ«
Itâs late at night again, and youâre sitting at home, exhausted after another grueling day at work. Your feet ache, and your body feels heavy, but despite your exhaustion, youâre still awake because of him.
Your phone is open to your messages with Goblin, and you hesitate before typing.
You: be honest. do you ever think about what itâd be like if we met irl?
Jungwon, who was lying in bed, staring at his screen, felt his stomach drop.
Oh no.
Jungwonâs fingers hovered over his screen. His heart pounded as he read your message over and over again. Of course, he had thought about it every single day since realizing who you were. But if you knew who he really was⊠would you still want to meet?
After a long pause, he finally replied.
Goblin: hmm, maybe⊠but what if we meet and youâre disappointed?
He winced after sending it. That was a cowardly response, dodging the real issue.
Your reply came almost instantly.
You: lmao please. i bet ur like a middle-aged man with a receding hairline
You: but honestly. i do wonder. itâs weird, right? liking someone u never met??
Jungwonâs stomach flipped. Liking?
Before he could stop himself, his lips curled into a small smile. Did you really mean that? Or was it just a casual way of speaking? He needed to be careful.
Goblin: do u? like me, i mean
The second he sent it, he regretted it. It felt too direct. What if you got weirded out? He considered sending a follow-up message to downplay it, but before he could, his phone vibrated.
You: idk. maybe?
Jungwon stared at the screen, his ears burning. You liked him? But you didnât even know who he was.
And that was the problem.
He couldnât keep lying to you.
Taking a deep breath, Jungwon sat up in bed. His fingers moved over his keyboard, hesitating for a long moment before he typed-
Goblin: Hey, can I call you?
đ«
Your phone buzzed in your hand. An incoming call. From Goblin.
Your stomach flipped. He had never called before. Hesitating for a second, you stared at the screen before finally answering.
âHello?â
There was a pause, then-
âHey.â
Your breath hitched. His voice was⊠smooth. Gentle. Familiar in a way. You sat up straighter.
âWow. So you do have a voice,â you teased trying to mask your nervousness.
He let out a soft chuckle. âYeah⊠I figured it was time.â
There was a beat of silence before he spoke again, this time more serious.
âI have to tell you something.â
Your heart pounded. âWhat is it?â
Jungwon took a deep breath on the other end. His hands clenched into fists, but this was it. No more hiding.
âI know who you are.â
Your brows furrowed. âHuh?â
âweâve met before. A lot of times.â
âWaitâwhat are you saying?â
Jungwon hesitated. âIâm not just some random guy.â
âIâm Jungwon.â
Silence.
Your mind raced. Jungwon? Only one Jungwon immediately came to mind, but that was impossible.
âJungwonâŠ?â Your voice came out weaker than you wanted.
âYeah.â Another pause. âYang Jungwon.â
Your breath caught in your throat.
No.
No way.
The leader of Enhypen. The same Jungwon you had bumped into at the company a few times. The same Jungwon whose songs you had on your playlist.
The same Jungwon you had been texting for months.
You felt your whole world tilt.
âYouâre kidding.â You whispered.
âIâm not.â His voice was cautious. âI wanted to tell you earlier, but I was scared. I liked talking to you like this. Just as⊠me.â
Your grip on the phone tightened. You were shocked, confused, and something dangerously close to betrayal.
You had confided in him and talked about your job, talked about him, without knowing it was actually him.
Your mind was spinning.
âIââ You swallowed hard. âI need a minute.â
Jungwonâs heart sank. He could hear the sadness in your voice.
âI get it.â His voice was soft. âTake your time.â
But as the call ended, a heavy silence settled between you.
And Jungwon could only hope he hadnât just lost you forever.
đ«
You had deleted his contact the second you found out the truth. It was impulsive, but even now, you felt guilty.
You never gave him a chance to explain.
Not that you owed him one. He had lied to you for months. He let you vent about work, about idols, about him. All while hiding that he was the person you were unknowingly talking about. Still, a small part of you wondered what he would have said if you had stayed long enough to hear him out. But it was too late now. You had cut him off, and life had to move on.
So you threw yourself into work, acting like nothing happened. But something felt⊠different.
For one, your workload, usually overwhelming, had mysteriously lightened. Tasks you had been dreading were suddenly reassigned. Even the small mistakes you made generally earned you a scolding and seemed to go unnoticed.
At first, you thought it was just luck. But then, little things started to stand out.
One evening, after a long day, you dragged yourself into a break room, exhausted. You had been assigned to help with an event that had left you completely drained. As you slumped into a chair, your coworker sighed beside you.
âLucky you,â she muttered and stretched her arms. âI heard you were supposed to be on cleanup duty tonight, but someone switched it at the last minute.â
You blinked. âWait⊠what?â
Your coworker shrugged. âDunno. Some higher-up pulled some strings, I guess. Maybe youâve got a guardian angel or something.â
You let out a disbelieving laugh. A guardian angel? Yeah, right.
Meanwhile, Jungwon watched from the shadows, unseen. He knew he had no right to interfere. Not after what he had done, but he couldnât just stand by and do nothing.
So he helped in the only way he could.
He stayed silent and watched from a distance. Making sure you were okay. Doing whatever he could to ease your burden, even if you never found out.
Because if he couldnât have you back in his life⊠this was the least he could do.
đ«
Your phone buzzed on your nightstand just as you were about to go to bed.
You groaned, rolling over to grab it, eyes squinting at the screen. Unknown Number.
For a second, you debated letting it ring, but curiosity got the better of you. With a sigh, you swiped to accept the call and pressed the phone to your ear.
âHello?â
Silence.
You frowned. âUh⊠hello?â
Finally, a voice. âHey⊠itâs me.â
You pulled the phone away, staring at the number. It was definitely not saved in your contacts.
ââŠSorry, who is this?â you asked cautiously.
A pause. Then, a chuckle. âDid you delete my number that fast?â
Your stomach dropped.
That laugh. That tone.
It hit you all at once.
Your fingers clenched around the phone. âJungwon.â
Another silence. Then, softly-âYeah.â
You swallowed, suddenly feeling like you couldnât breathe.
Your brain scrambled to find something to say, but you could only stare blankly at your ceiling.
âIâWhat do you want?â Your voice came out smaller than you intended.
Jungwon exhaled as if he had been holding his breath. âI donât know,â he admitted. âI just⊠I just needed to hear your voice.â
Your grip on the phone tightened.
âYou shouldnât have called,â you muttered. âYou shouldnâtââ
âI know,â he cut in. âI know, and Iâm sorry. But I couldnât help it.â
You shut your eyes. âJungwon, Iââ
âI shouldâve told you sooner,â he rushed out. âI shouldâve told you a lot of things.â
Your chest ached.
âI knew it was you,â he continued. âI figured it out early. But I didnât say anything because I was selfish. I didnât want you to treat me differently. I didnât want to lose what we had. Iâm sorry.â
âI wasnât pretending,â he said softer now. âEverything I said to you was real.â
You pressed your palm against your forehead. You were overwhelmed.
âI know I donât deserve it, butâŠâ Jungwon hesitated. âCan I see you?â
Your heart pounded.
Could you face him? After everything?
đ«
You didnât know why you said yes.
Maybe it was curiosity. Perhaps because you missed the feeling of something that had once felt so real. Or perhaps you werenât as ready to let him go as you told yourself. So now, here you were. Your jacket covered your pjâs underneath. The air was cold, but not nearly as cold as the tension between you and the boy standing a few feet away. For a moment, neither of you spoke. He was wearing a hoodie, hands tucked into the pockets, eyes looking from you to the ground because he didnât know where to start.
Seeing him now, after everything, felt surreal.
You swallowed. âSo⊠you changed your number just to call me?â
Jungwon let out a soft laugh. âYeah.â
You shook your head. âThatâs insane.â
âI know.â His lips quirked, but it didnât quite reach his eyes. âI tried to leave you alone. I did. But I couldnât stop thinking about you.â
You clenched your jaw, âYou lied to me.â
Jungwonâs expression fell. âI know.â
âYou let me embarrass myself. You let me tell you thingsâŠthings I wouldnât have said if I knew who you were.â Your voice was with frustration and hurt. âDo you have any idea how humiliating that was?â
âI do,â Jungwon said quietly. âAnd I hate myself for it.â
There was silence again. Then, Jungwon decided to take a slow step closer.
âI never wanted to hurt you,â he said. âI swear. I liked talking to you. I liked that you didnât see me as an idol. You treated me like a normal person. And for the first time in a long time, I felt like one.â
You exhaled sharply and looked away.
âI know I donât deserve your forgiveness,â Jungwon continued. âBut if any part of you still wants this, still wants me, then Iâll do anything to fix this.â
Your fingers tightened around the sleeves of your jacket.
Do you still want this?
Did you still want him?
You let out a bitter laugh while shaking your head. âYou know whatâs funny?â
Jungwon stayed quiet.
âI used to think it was ridiculous,â you admitted. âLiking someone youâve never even met. Someone you only talked to through a screen.â You let out a breath. âBut then⊠it happened.â
Jungwonâs expression softened, but he didnât say anything.
âI told myself it wasnât real,â you continued. âThat it was just the comfort of having someone to talk to. It was easy to fall for someone when all you had were words and late-night conversations.â You swallowed. âBut it felt real. And when everything came crashing down, it hurt like it was real.â
âI didnât mean to fall for you,â you admitted. âBut I did.â
Jungwonâs breath hitched. âYouâŠâ
âI liked you,â you said firmly this time. âI liked Goblin. Not Jungwon, not an idol. Just you.â
His hands twitched like he wanted to reach for you, but he held himself back.
âI ruined it,â he murmured. âDidnât I?â
You hesitated. âI donât know.â
It was the truth.
Jungwon was bracing himself for the worst.
You sighed and looked down at your feet. âI forgive you.â
He sucked in a breath. âYou do?â
You nodded, âButâŠâ
The relief that had started to settle in his features quickly faded.
âI want to take it slow,â you said carefully. âI want to learn more about you. You, not just the person I texted late at night.â You exhaled. âAnd I donât know what to do, Jungwon. Even just meeting you here feels like Iâm walking on thin ice.â
Jungwon pressed his lips together. He understood.
âIf anyone finds outâŠâ you hesitated as you glanced around as if someone could be listening. âI could lose my job. You could ruin everything youâve worked for.â
âI know,â he murmured.
You let out a small, breathy laugh, âThen why are you even here?â
âBecause youâre worth the risk.â
Your heart stuttered.
âI donât want to let you go,â he said. âBut I also donât want to rush you. If you want to take it slow, we will.â He smiled. âI can wait. I mean, we already spent months texting. I think I can handle a little more patience.â
You rolled your eyes, but a small smile tugged at your lips.
âOkay,â you said softly. âThen letâs take it slow
đ«
Months Later
You were swamped with work, running from one task to another, barely catching a break. The office was hectic as usual, with staff members moving in and out, handling schedules, coordinating events, and making sure everything for the idols ran smoothly. You had settled into a routine again, though now and then, youâd catch yourself glancing at your phone, wondering if he would first text.
Your relationship with Jungwon had been⊠complicated. Ever since that night, you had both taken slow but careful texts, occasional calls, and a few fleeting encounters in the company's hallways. He was still an idol, and you were still a staff member. Even though no one knew about the two of you, there was always a risk.
As you finished organizing some paperwork, your phone vibrated in your pocket.
Goblin: Come outside.
Your brows furrowed.
You: Iâm working??
Goblin: Just for a second.
You sighed. But curiosity got the best of you, and you slipped out of the office, making your way toward the quieter side of the building. As soon as you stepped outside, you spotted him. Jungwon, standing near one of the company vans, dressed in casual clothes, a cap pulled low over his face. Even with his attempt to stay hidden, you could still recognize him.`
âWhat are you doing here?â you asked, crossing your arms.
Jungwon smiled, âI wanted to see you.â
You rolled your eyes. âWe texted last night.â
âYeah, but thatâs not the same,â he replied smoothly. âAnd I figured you could use a little break.â
You sighed. âJungwonââ
Before you could argue, he held up a small bag. âI got you coffee.â
You blinked. âWhat?â
âAnd a snack.â He grinned, holding it out to you. âFigured youâd be too busy to get one yourself.â
You took the coffee from his hands, fingers brushing his for a fleeting second. ââŠThanks, Goblin.â
Jungwon smirked. âYou really wonât change that nickname, huh?â
âNope,â you said and took a sip.
He huffed out a laugh.
You gave him a look. âWhat? You donât like it?â
Jungwon stepped closer. âI donât hate it,â he admitted before he leaned in and pressed a quick kiss to your mouth.
You barely had time to process it before he pulled away, grinning. âBut Iâd rather you call me something else.â
Your brain is short-circuited. âLike what?â
He shrugged, walking away with a smug face. âI donât know. Maybe boyfriend?â
Your face burned as you gaped at him. âJungwon!â
He only laughed, waving over his shoulder. âSee you later, pretty.â
And just like that, he left you standing there, speechless.
You stared after him, then scoffed to yourself with a small smile.
âGuess âGoblinâ wasnât so bad after all.â

DPxDC prompt. Home?
Ever since everyone in the Fenton family found out that Danny Fenton is Danny Phantom, there have been constant guests at Maddie and Jack's house.
...More specifically, they were visited literally every day by members of the Justice League.
Superman came in the evenings with freshly baked apple pie, the frightening silhouette of Batman appeared in the corner of the kitchen with a basket of top-quality cookies with chocolate chips in the mornings, Aquaman and Flash showed to do movie marathons on the fenton couch, Wonder Woman came to chat with Jazz and Danny over a cup of tea and Shazam always was with her to hang out with children too.
It seemed sweet, but it was not necessary. Jack and Maddie handled the situation well on their own!
~~~~~
Maddie: I'm sorry, sir, we appreciate your care and help but you and your colleagues really shouldn't come every day. You must have other things to do. Phantom may be a ghost but he was our son. Danny is..well, he was, such a good kid. I don't think it's going to hurt us.
Nightwing: I'm sorry? Mrs, with all due respect, no one was worried about your safety from the very beginning.
Red Hood *stops washing dishes*: Wing's right. Your safety was the last thing we thought about when we decided to keep an eye on Phantom. But the safety of the league's members is a constant priority. Honestly, I don't understand why Danny keeps calling this place home but it's his damn choice, and we'll be here as long as he needs us. So do not create more problems, hunters.
~~~~~
The Justice League understands that their ghost boy is ready to forgive Jack and Maddie a lot because he loves his parents. But the members of the justice League themselves are not ready to do the same. They still remember all the nightmares that kept the boy awake at night, and the wary look on his face that he still shows at every checkup in the medical bay, and tears of happiness when Batman informed him that the anti-ecto laws had finally been repealed.
~~~~~
Not all of them were mother hens like Bruce but they also couldn't help but worry when Danny either excitedly or fearfully said that his parents were waiting for him at home so he couldn't stay with them for long after school. They couldn't let the child think that he would have to confront them alone.
Of course, they did not try to send the boy's parents to prison and did not even insist on depriving them of their parental rights, but only because it would break Danny's heart. But they had read all the plans of their experiments, they had read all their hypotheses about the Phantom and therefore could not leave the boy alone with them.
So now the team had not only a Watchtower duty schedule but also a schedule of who would look after Danny at the Fenton house.
Stanford Pines relationship HCs
(ford pines x reader) there will be smut so, 18+ below... Some angst, mainly fluff, I HC that most if not all of the pines family are neurodivergent in some way.
A/N: I had a long journey last week and all I could think about was the stans, so this will become specific... đ
Will do the same for Stanley too in the future.
Ford has a lot to catch up on when he comes back through the portal, but he won't jump into a relationship immediately, it will still take a little time, he's got a lot to adjust to in his home dimension and being with someone has not been his forte.
But once he does he's surprisingly clingy, will want to cuddle up to you, in bed, on the couch, wherever you both are. Not one for real PDA, but will be close to you and call you terms of endearment out in public, just a little less than he does at home. I HC that he'd call his partner "dear" "darling" "honey", looooves your hips and putting his arm around your waist (it's a great way to pull you in to snuggle).
Doesn't hold your hand at first but since you like him to hold your hand and give him assurance over the fact that you like his six fingers, he does. It loosens his insecurities around his hands a lot.
Gets addicted to kissing you, doesn't care whether it leads to more or not, Stanford simply loves kissing whether it's brief or a good long make out session. But he does prefer to take his time over it.
Stanford is very logical, good at patching himself up from decades of portal hopping and therefore will do the same for you if you need it, is meticulous if you get hurt in any way but also has an appalling bedside manner! Doesn't tell you if he's going to do something that will sting and tells you not to be overdramatic if you react negatively to it (you know how people can get a little angry when someone they love gets potentially seriously hurt?). And yet you know him to be a gentle man, generally touches you softly like you're made of glass (unless it's to pull you away from something dangerous), so having him take care of you can also be comforting, he'll never do something painful unless it's necessary. (Don't worry though, his brother will make you stan cakes to cheer you both up.)
Speaking of food, Ford definitely prefers his home universe food to what he had in the other dimensions, tried lots of different unusual dishes, some he even liked, but none of it can compare to his homely comforts. When not sailing and adventuring, he puts on a few pounds. Satiates his sweet tooth and caffeine addiction with mabel juice (is the only other one of the pines to like it), prefers it to coffee. Stanley swears his tastebuds must've been affected during his time away. Doesn't like it with as much edible glitter as mabel does, but this is the only deviation from the original recipe he has.
Excellent teacher, you want to learn how he does something? More than eager to teach you with a steady hand and clear pace. Will teach you regardless how to shoot his laser and magnetic guns, how to defend yourself and how to meditate (if you didn't know these already). Can get into the information and ramble like you know about a topic and then realise (eventually) that he needs to break down or explain what he means.
Despite this he also has a romantic streak, whilst he can forget everything aside from his work or adventures, including important dates, he can also be a very considerate and supportive partner and post-portal wants to include you as much as possible in his life and conversations. You can talk for hours about any and all topics and he loves to be mentally stimulated in a relationship, however that may be.
Does sometimes have nightmares and deep guilt over Stanley and is dealing with it as best as he can, likes to know he can count on you for comfort and guidance, makes him feel less panicked or paranoid after Bill. He and his brother talk things out too and these talks can go on all night into the early morning and it's best for them to have space, Ford is grateful for your patience and willingness to be involved in his life, especially as he knows he wasn't good at opening up to you when you were starting to become friends let alone a relationship.
Ford would be shy at first, but once he gets comfortable with how to pleasure you, expect this man to be kind of obsessed. That absorbing focus he can have on his projects and studies? Yeah that can be transferred to you just as easily, which can be a little intense!
You off-handendly mention something about sexual experiences, perhaps even a joke about things you haven't tried, catching his perplexed look afterwards, you say it's simply fantasy and not really something you need to experience. However what you took for confusion or slight insecurity was actually Ford processing what you said. In fact, it doesn't leave his mind and so he does something he's good at: he does some research đ
One night you might even wake up from sleep to find him sitting upright, lightly snoring, bedside lamp on, clearly fallen asleep whilst writing on his portable writing desk (it's either a gift from you or the twins, not sure which to choose!), when curiosity gets the better of you and you sneak a page out into your hands, you're faced with his attempts at organising fantasies, what he thinks you would want to try, how would you react to different stimuli or some of his own fantasies... Mainly figuring out how many orgasms he could coax out of you or how long he thinks he could edge you over time, what positions or rp you might like: he's worked it all out in a haphazard kind of way, like he's brainstorming the best approaches.
It's so plan-sexual scientific it's frank but... attractive, because it's so... him.
Whether he wakes up on his own or you wake him up, he ends up blushing, though he's not really sorry that you've found it. He's looking at you with this mix of nerves for how you'll react and new found smugness when he sees that you've been affected by what you've read... And yeah, neither of you are leaving that bed for a long time.
Basically, like a true scientist, he is down to experiment! đ He's willing to try anything as long as it's not going to seriously hurt you or it's something he wouldn't try on himself first, this is a boundary he's never willing to cross. Trust and open communication is an important thing for him post-weirdmaggeddon especially, and he's getting better at it as he goes along, so even though he often doesn't feel confident, he is infuriatingly good at aftercare and all the rest!
This means when he's not tripping over his words or flustered by you himself -he can be a damn tease at times and will chuckle to himself when you curse him out for the subtle touches he'll give you over the course of the day before pulling away. Sometimes he doesn't even know he's done it, which is evil.
Stanley will make grumbly jokes about how "you two lovebirds need to get a room!" Or about needing to move out đ
but honestly he's truly happy his brother is happy and if you get married he will sob the whole time, even through his roasting joke filled best man speech! (Cracks a joke more than once to you that you need to make Ford an "honest man" and then laughs at it himself before whispering to you that he can get the rings if you really want to.)
Will and does suffer in the warmer months because he will wear long sleeves, full length pants and or a turtle neck for the comfort aesthetic
Personality wise him and Stan are different as can be but they often sync up physically in their mannerisms or what they say, as freaky as it is cute in a way, when you are tired/drunk you can swear you're seeing double, which amuses both of them.
His favourite shared past time with you is any kind of board or card game, some of them the rest of the family will join in for, but will also love someone to play d&d&md with if you're willing! Loves to get into the details of the rules of whatever you're playing together and it can get quite heated (secretly finds your frustrated side quite attractive, as long as you're not actually angry at him).
I feel like Stanford would get into videogames as soon as he becomes more adept at technology in this dimension, likely it's dipper who is the one to introduce it to him and he loves it (nerd). Will marathon catch ups on all the movies and shows he's missed; especially the series he was into that got continued after the portal incident. You lose him to Star Wars prequels etc for at least a couple weeks of him getting his head round all the lore and how it works, may have controversial opinions and needs to work it all out, may need to contact dipper about this.
Regularly has calls with the family (mainly the twins) over video chat (and will always call it 'video calling' no matter what platform they're using), so once you're together that includes you too and be prepared to be bombarded with questions from them (your their new graunty or grunkle after all) â€ïž
We Fell in Love in October | Bucky Barnes x Reader
Hello everyone, andâŠ
đŠđ§ââïžđ»đHappy October!đđ»đ§ââïžđŠ
It is truly the most wonderful time of the year! Halloween is my favorite favorite holiday, so of course I had to write a little something. I borrowed the title from a girl in red song that I enjoy. Also, if you're a New Girl fan, parts of this plot line might be familiar to you :)
Word Count: 6.5k
Warnings: minor reader injury
Shrieks and laughter echoed from every direction. The smell of fresh kettle corn wafted through the crisp autumn air. And two separate groups of children in Halloween costumes almost knocked Bucky to the ground. They blew past him in a blur of candy and chaos, shouting as they ran. He was certain that a rogue kiddo had somehow smeared the sleeve of his jacket with the sticky, sugary coating of their caramel apple, but he didnât mind.
He simply took in the sights and sounds of the Halloween carnival, smiling to himself as went out of his way to step on crunchy leaves.Â
Autumn was his favorite time of year- October, specifically. It was October when he first bumped into you at his favorite coffee spot, spilling your pumpkin cold brew all over your shoes. His insistent apologies and dedicated clean-up efforts endeared him to you instantly, as did his shy smile. He graciously replaced your drink and bought you a slice of spiced pumpkin bread for good measure, which you happily shared with him.
After that, Bucky knew he was done for.
He found himself spending as much time with you as possible. The two of you frequented bookstores and museums. You introduced him to a swath of movies and tv shows that heâd missed out on over the years. And he brought you back in time with each 40âs crooner he showed you on his record player. Heâd never felt so comfortable, so at ease. And you returned the feeling ten-fold.Â
It was October of the following year when he showed up at your apartment with a massive bag of candy and a bottle of your favorite wine. He knew how much you loved Halloween and all it entailed: the movies, the décor, the spirit of the season. And he was determined to make it extra special. The two of you watched scary movies and laughed uproariously each time the other jumped. And both of you consumed so much candy, you feared you might be sick.
But that fear subsided when Bucky finally pressed his lips against yours for the first time. It took him all night to work up the courage. He found his focus drifting from Nightmare on Elm Street and settling on you. Your jack-o-lantern sweatshirt. Your slightly messy hair. Your bright smile. But he didnât make his move- he couldnât. He was far, far too nervous.Â
It wasnât until the night came to a close that he finally found his nerve. You walked him to the door and thanked him for the candy. The wine. The company. And for making the first day of October one for the books. The goodnight hug you shared lasted longer than it ever had, and you swore he held you tighter than before.
The two of you lingered by the front door, chatting about nothing of consequence. Bucky needed to buy himself some time, and you wanted to keep him in your apartment as long as possible. You figured that if he hung around long enough, maybe heâd finally make his move.
But he left. After another long hug and some more nonsensical chatting, he bid you goodnight. He intertwined his fingers with yours for a moment, sweeping his thumb across the back of your hand. He gave your hand a squeeze and swept a kiss across your knuckles, and then he slipped out the door.
But before the disappointment had a chance to settle into your chest, a metallic knocking vibrated through your front door. You opened it instantly, figuring that Bucky had forgotten his phone or his keys on your coffee table.
But he wasnât after any forgotten personal effects.Â
Breathlessly, he asked, âCan I?â
âPlease.â
And that was it.
His mouth met yours in long, deep kiss full of want and adoration and Halloween candy. His hands cradled your face, yours twisted into the front of his t-shirt. And neither of you took a breath for a very, very long time. Only when your chest burned from lack of oxygen did you finally pull away- but it was only for a second. He greedily recaptured your lips before you even knew what happened, not that youâd ever complain about it.Â
And when Bucky eventually broke the kiss, you knew you this was it for you- he was it for you. He brushed his lips against your cheek, your forehead, the tip of your nose. And he asked you if youâd like to join him for an official date. You, of course, said yes.
Said date came only a few days later, when Bucky took you to a pumpkin patch and the two of you carved jack-o-lanterns together. You carved a rather accurate depiction of Ghost Face. And Bucky, of course, decorated his with a stick figure representation of the two of you at the coffee shop where you first met.
The night ended with a Halloween Hayride followed by a corn maze- and you swore Bucky got the two of you lost on purpose. He kept pulling you down errant pathways, insisting that theyâd lead to the exit. No exit ever materialized at the end of his rogue, twisting trails. But they did provide the perfect venue for him to steal a kiss or three. And you didnât complain once.
On October thirtieth, he asked you to be his. And you told him that you already were- youâd been his for a long time. He just didnât know it.
It was hard for Bucky to believe that only two Octobers ago, you were a stranger. And now, you were his girl. Heâd given all of himself over to you, and you accepted him with nothing but warmth and kindness and love. He couldnât believe heâd been lucky enough to meet you, to win your affections, to call you his.Â
He was never a huge fan of dark, dreary, autumn, as he always preferred the warmth of summer. But meeting you was enough to turn him into fall's biggest fan. The two of you were inextricably linked to the season, turning it instantly into his number one favorite. And as he strolled through the Halloween carnival and allowed autumn to wrap around him like a blanket, he couldnât help but feel at home.Â
At the sight of the Haunted House, Bucky hung a right and curved around the back of the structure. He listened to the screams and subsequent laughter of the patrons inside as he waited for you. He didnât particularly love haunted houses, and probably never wouldâve considered partaking in one if it hadnât been for you.
âBuck!â your voice broke through the noise of the festival and pulled Buckyâs attention.Â
But as his head perked up, he didnât find his best girl. No, he found only a bloody, decaying zombie sprinting in his direction. Heâd never been so happy to see a monster.
âWoah! You look amazing, baby!â Bucky motioned for you to do a spin for him and admired your elaborate, almost-too-realistic make up and costume. âYouâre gonna scare the hell outta these people, doll.â
A wide, satisfied smile stretched across your zombified face, âThatâs the idea.âÂ
As carefully as you could you leaned in and brushed a kiss to Buckyâs lips. Of course, you didnât want to dirty his face with your gory make up, but you simply couldnât resist kissing him. And youâd never want to.Â
âWait, I thought Sam was coming with you,â you scanned the area, looking for Buckyâs partner in crime. âDid he change his mind?â
Bucky let out a breathy laugh, âNo, heâs here. But he saw a caramel apple stand near the front of the carnival and I lost him immediately.â
Your laughed matched Buckyâs, âYeah, that sounds like him.â
Bucky eyed the haunted house, with its flashing lights and eerie exterior. It loomed over the entirety of the carnival, promising heart-stopping terror and endless fright for anyone who dared to enter. A cold sweat dampened the palm of his right hand; he swiped it on his pantleg without a word.
âSo, howâs it been going, doll? Are you having a good time?â
At first, you thought it might be strange to volunteer as a scare actor. You didnât have any experience, and didnât think of yourself as much of a performer. But the second you saw the listing for volunteers online, the idea wormed its way into your brain and refused to leave. You always loved Halloween, always loved all things creepy. And working as a scarer for a few nights a week sounded like fun.
But it was Bucky who gave you the final push you needed. He knew you were second-guessing yourself, knew youâd talk yourself out of it if he didnât step in. And you were grateful heâd been there to encourage you.
âIâm having the best time! Itâs been a blast so far,â the excitement radiating off of you was almost palpable. âEveryoneâs so nice and weâre having so much fun. Iâm really glad I decided to go through with it.â
âSee? I told you,â Bucky shot you a wink. âI only wish I couldâve been here on opening night of the festival-â
âBuck, you were literally saving the world. I understand,â you told him. âThereâs no hard feelings.â
âWell, Iâm really happy for you sweetheart. Iâm so glad youâre having a good time.â He gently placed his metallic hand on the least bloody part of your face, âAnd Iâm so excited to see you in action.â
You gave him a strange look, âWhat do you mean?â
âI just mean that I canât wait to see you doing your thing in there!â He gestured toward the haunt, âCanât wait for you to scare me to death, baby.â
âOh, Buck-Â no. I donât-â you cut a glance toward the haunted house, knowing full well what lurked inside the walls. âI donât think thatâs a good idea.â
âWhat? But I want to support you, doll-â
âYouâre supporting me just by being here,â you leaned into his touch. âBut I donât think you should go in there, babe.â
Admittedly, he wasnât looking forward to his trip through the haunt. Of course, he was excited to see you in your element- he just wished your element wasn't a terrifying, immersive experience.
âItâs a dark, enclosed space with blood and gore and people screaming,â you cautioned him. âAnd thereâs actors who jump out at you from the dark. I swear, thereâs one of us popping out around like, every corner.â
Buckyâs lips twisted into an uncomfortable, tense expression. He thought about what that experience might be like for him. How it might affect him. Once again, he found himself wiping his palm against his thigh.
âI just donât want it to trigger anything for you, you know?â And you meant it. A trip through your stupid haunted house wasnât worth his mental health.
He forced the tension out of his face and blanketed his features with a manufactured calm. You were always so supportive of him, always did your best to be there for him. And it was his turn to be there for you. What kind of boyfriend was he if he couldnât even see you perform? Sure, going inside the haunt wasnât his idea of a perfect evening, but he owed it to you.
âYeah, but Iâve been through way worse, sweetheart. I can- I can handle a haunted house.â He wasnât sure who he was trying to convince- you or himself. âAs long as there isnât a Hydra torture chamber scene, Iâm sure Iâll be fine.â
âWell, I assure you there is not a Hydra torture chamber in there, but I still think you should think it over before you go inside. Okay?â You knew Bucky too well. Knew heâd do anything to make you happy- even if it meant sacrificing his peace. But heâd worked so hard to find that peace, and you couldnât let him shatter it just for you. âI wonât be disappointed or get my feelings hurt if you decide not to go inside, I promise. I just want you to have a fun night without any pain or flashbacks or panic attacks.â
Bucky found nothing but authenticity in your voice. You werenât just saying these things, or secretly hoping that heâd still venture into the haunt. No, you meant everything you said; you just wanted what was best for him. Wanted him to enjoy himself. And he was endlessly grateful for your understanding. For your kindness.
âShit. Alright, I-â you looked down at your phone and sighed at the new text illuminating your screen, âI have to get back inside, my breakâs over. Sorry, baby.â
âNo, doll, donât worry about it. Sorry I monopolized your entire break.â
âAre you kidding me?â You pressed a kiss to his cheek, âthis was exactly how I wanted to spend it.â
He pulled you in for deep- yet careful- kiss. He didnât want to mess up the makeup youâd worked so hard on but couldnât let you go back inside without a kiss.Â
âJust promise me youâll think it over before you actually go inside the haunt, okay?â You eyed him with a serious, almost grave expression. âThere wonât be any hard feelings if you sit this one out.â
âI promise,â he said. âAnd to tell you the truth, Iâm- Iâm thinking I might just stick to carnival games and funnel cake.â
A massive sigh of relief left your chest. The worry youâd been holding onto dissipated into the chilly autumnal air. And suddenly, nothing sounded better than cheap, rigged carnival games.Â
âSee, now that sounds like fun.â You left one more kiss to Buckyâs lips before heading toward your next shift. âHave a good time tonight, Buck.â
Bucky watched your bloody form receded toward the haunt. He couldnât help but smile as he thought about your warnings, your cautionary words. You really did care about him. You loved him more than anyone ever had. And you always, always put him first. He wasnât sure heâd ever be able to express how grateful he was to have you. And as he observed the way you went out of your path just to step on the crunchiest leaves you could find, he knew the two of you were perfectly suited.
âBaby!â Bucky called after you as you reached the back door of the haunt.
You turned.
âDo you still wanna come over later?â he shouted over the noise of the festival.
Your âDUH!â echoed across the distance. And then you disappeared inside.
âAw, man. Did I miss her?â Sam appeared just behind Bucky, two caramel apples in hand.
âYeah, she had to get back to work. Oh-â Bucky reached for the apple in Samâs right hand, the one that hadnât yet been marred by Samâs teeth. âIs this for me? Thanks, I-â
âUm, no,â Sam yanked the treat out of Buckyâs reach. âThese are both mine.â
Bucky scoffed, âYouâre joking, right?âÂ
âNope.â
Bucky rolled his eyes, âYouâre actually double-fisting caramel apples right now?â
Sam gave a confident nod and took a bite out of one of the treats. âLeave me alone, man. Iâm just participating in the spirit of Halloween.â
âJesus Christ,â Bucky couldnât help but laugh at his friendâs antics. âOkay, well then, Iâm gonna go get one of my own. Are you coming?â
Sam tilted his head to the side and gestured toward the haunt with one of his apples. âArenât we going inside now that sheâs back on shift?â
Bucky gave the unsettling building a long look. He really did want to support you- but he just couldnât bring himself to willingly venture into that environment. He thought back on what you said: Dark. Enclosed space. Blood. Gore. People jumping out of the darkness. It was the perfect recipe for a flashback. He could practically feel his PTSD crawling out of the darkest corners of his mind, waiting to pounce.
âUm, no, actually. Iâm not- Iâm not gonna go in,â Bucky said. âI was cautioned against it by a very sweet, very beautiful zombie.âÂ
It didnât quite make sense to Sam. âShe doesnât want you to go inside?â
âShe said itâs just not the best idea. The way she described it, I know itâs not gonna be a good experience for me,â a sad smile pulled at Buckyâs features. âPlus, I donât know how Iâm gonna react to bloody people popping out of the shadows and screaming at me. I feel like my training- or my PTSD- is gonna kick in and I might hit first and ask questions later,â he shrugged. âI donât wanna hurt anyone.â
Sam didnât suspect that Bucky would actually harm any of the actors; he trusted Bucky more than Bucky trusted himself. But he wasnât going to push. If there was any possibility that the things inside the haunt might send Bucky into a spiral, he was happy to steer clear.
âAlright, yeah, we can- we can go play some games instead,â Sam suggested. âAnd you can win your girl a prize. Come on.â
Sam pointed Bucky in the direction of the carnival games- but not before he granted Bucky his second apple.Â
âWilson⊠Iâm touched,â Bucky took a huge bite of the tart, sticky treat. âThis is real friendship.â
âYeah, yeah. But youâre getting the next round.âÂ
The two of them set off in the direction of the large array of carnival booths, both happily gnawing on a caramel apple. Bucky was grateful to have two people in his life who truly cared about his mental health. Two people who never forced him into situations that had the potential to rip open his old wounds.Â
And though Bucky wished he could visit you inside the haunt, he knew it was better this way. If he chose to experience the haunted house and ended up having a violent flashback or a panic attack, he knew it would ruin your night. Youâd spend the entire evening taking care of him, looking after him, worrying about him- youâd completely abandon your post inside the haunted house, and he couldnât do that to you. He couldnât take away your Halloween fun, especially not when youâd just told him what a blast it all was.
No, heâd instead spend the evening playing shitty carnival games, drinking pumpkin beer, and betting Sam that he couldnât eat another caramel apple. And later, after youâd finished your night of scaring, heâd welcome you into his apartment and spend the rest of his evening snuggled up with you on the couch. Heâd make a batch of spiced apple cider and curl up with you under a blanket. And the two of you would fall asleep while Scream played in the background.
Bucky wouldnât have it any other way.Â
Around ten-thirty, a quiet knock pulled Bucky from his book. He dropped it on the coffee table- taking no care to mark his page- and dashed toward the front door. He couldnât wait to ask you a million questions. To hear your stories from the night. But when he threw open the door, he didnât find the smiling zombie heâd seen just a few hours ago.
Something about you seemed off. Almost hollow. But Bucky couldnât quite put his finger on it. He was certain you had to be tired- exhausted, really. Youâd spent hours chasing after your victims and screaming at the top of your lungs. Surely, you were just worn out.
âHey, Buck,â you did your best to force a smile, but it wasnât at all convincing.Â
âHey, baby,â Bucky pulled you into his body without caring that you were still covered in a thick layer of fake blood and zombie make up. âYou good?â
You nodded against his chest, âYeah. Just tired.â
Bucky felt his worry recede a bit- but it didnât vanish completely. He took you by the hand and brought you inside, but didnât pepper you with questions like heâd planned. All of his wonderings could wait until after you got a well-deserved night of rest.Â
âI was thinking I could make us some spiced apple cider,â Bucky offered, âBut if youâd rather just go to sleep, I can save that for tomorrow. What do you think, doll?â
âUm, whatever you wanna do, babe,â you rummaged through your overnight bag and unearthed your toiletry bag and pajamas. âIâm gonna go shower and take off my make up.â
Without another word, you retreated down the hall and disappeared into the bathroom. Something about your demeanor didnât sit right with Bucky. This wasnât just exhaustion; something darker lurked beneath your still waters. But he opted to give you your space. He didnât want to delay your shower; surely, you wanted to shed your grime and get comfortable. And once youâd emerged from your clean up, heâd once again ask about your well-being. But not a moment before.
He quickly changed shirts, shedding the one that heâd willingly dirtied by hugging you, and went to work on the cider. Even if you only wanted a sip or two before bed, that was enough for him. He didnât mind putting in the effort if there was even a chance it might make you smile- heâd do anything to see that smile. To make you happy.
âSorry that took so long,â you said as you padded down the hall half an hour later. âGetting all of the blood and make up off is kind of a process.âÂ
At the sound of your voice, Bucky rose from his seat in the kitchen and met you in the hall with a mug of hot cider, which you accepted.
âDonât worry about it, doll. I was just-â a smiled flashed across his face, âOh, sweetheart, it looks like you missed some.â
Some of the blueish purple make up still stained your cheek and tainted the skin around your eye. A bit of fake blood ran through your brow. And clearly, youâd forgotten to remove one of your bloody contacts.Â
âHere, let me.â He raised his hand to your cheek and tried to swipe the remaining make up from your skin with his thumb, but you yanked your head away.
Pain burned in Buckyâs chest. Youâd never flinched like that around him. Never once did you dodge his touch or fear that he might hurt you. You always said you didnât see him as a threat, didnât think of him as a monster. What had happened in the last few hours that changed the way you saw him?Â
He felt himself teetering on the edge of heartbreak, but the puzzle pieces fell together before he had the chance to fall apart. He didnât recall you wearing bloody special effects contacts earlier tonight. And your zombie make up hadnât been that shade of indigo.Â
Bucky flipped on the hall light, bathing your face in a warm glow. He carefully raised his palms in a wordless promise that he wouldnât hurt you. And once you gave him a small nod, he gently cradled your face in his hands. He carefully turned your head toward the light, allowing him a good, clear look at the marks on your face.Â
And what he found ripped open a pit in his stomach. You didnât flinch because you feared him- no, you flinched because you were hurt.
A large, dark blue bruise bloomed under the skin of your cheekbone. And another bruise stained your orbital purple. The area was already swelling, and Bucky couldnât help but think about how much pain you were in. A gash sliced through your eyebrow, just above your blackened eye. And unfortunately, the blood staining the white of your eye wasnât part of a creepy contact lens- it was real. It was all real.
âShit. Baby, what happened?âÂ
âIâm fine,â you lied.
âNo, youâre not,â Bucky insisted.Â
A few tears gathered in the corners of your eyes. You spent your entire ride to Buckyâs telling yourself that you were fine. That you were okay. That it was just some bruising. That crying wouldnât fix anything. You told yourself that people go through way worse every day- that Bucky had been through way, way worse for almost a century. You told yourself that it wasnât a big deal. That getting emotional over something so small was unnecessarily dramatic.Â
But Bucky automatically validated you- without even knowing it.
âWhat happened, sweetheart?â
You cut a glance to the side- which only made your eye throb. âUm, there was this guy who came through the haunt. And when I jumped out at him, he um,â you shrugged. âHe hit me.â
A hurricane of emotion ripped through Bucky. He was horrified. Concerned. Wrathful. Heartbroken. All at once.Â
âHe hit me twice, actuallyâŠâ You knew it would only make Bucky more upset. But what was the point of hiding the truth? He was going to be distraught either way. âHe hit me here first,â you pointed at your cheek. âAnd then the second time, he got me in the eye. He had one of those big, collegiate class rings on- thatâs what sliced my eyebrow open.â
âJesus. Okay, um, you hang tight right here. Iâm gonna grab my keys and some shoes- I need to get you to the emergency room,â Bucky threw his attention down the hall, searching for his keys.
âI donât need to go to the ER-â
âThen Iâm at least taking you to a minor emergency clinic,â Bucky insisted. âYou need to be seen by-â
âThe medic at the carnival already gave me a once over,â you rested a hand against his chest, calming him. âShe said Iâm fine. The cut doesnât need stitches. I just have a minor concussion.â
Bucky stared at you for a long moment while a war raged inside his head. He knew you were okay, that your life wasnât in danger. And he could tell you were too tired for an unnecessary trip to the hospital. But heâd feel more comfortable if a doctor took a look at you. If he had a guarantee that youâd be alright.
âI promise Iâm okay,â you told him. âI really just wanna rest.â
And after another long moment of internally weighing the pros and cons, Bucky conceded.
âOkay. Here, Iâll take that,â he took your mug of cider and placed it on the hall table. âCome sit, sweetheart,â Bucky took you by the hand and led you to the living room. He got you situated on the couch and draped a blanket over your lap.
âHe actually tried to hit me a third time,â you said. âI was already on the ground at that point. But he still went for it.â
You didnât mean to sound so wounded. So pathetic. But part of you was still in shock. And the other part was heartbroken that one person had ruined your entire experience.Â
âThankfully, a few of the other actors got to him before he had the chance to actually make contact again.â
Bucky thought he might be sick. âWhat the fuck?â
You shrugged, âIâm not⊠I donât know.â
âUm, do you need- Iâm gonna get you some ice, okay?â He didnât want to leave your side, but he could practically feel the throbbing, pounding pain hammering inside your head. And when he returned from the kitchen with an ice pack, some Tylenol, and a glass of water, he took a seat next to you.
âWhy would he- he knew he was going into a haunted house. Why would he hit you?â Bucky couldnât wrap his mind around it. He knew it was possible that the trauma from his Hydra days could make him lash out inside the haunt, so he chose to abstain. Why your assailant hadnât done the same baffled him.Â
âAnd why would he hit you multiple times?â
You shook your head and instantly regretted it as pain surged through your face. âI mean, they say âfight or flight.â He clearly chose fight.â
âBut after the initial hit, the shock and fear wouldâve worn off,â Bucky reasoned. âHe wouldâve been able to recognize that he wasnât actually in danger. That you were an actor, not a threat.â He sighed, âAt least, he shouldâve been able to figure that out.â
With a swig of water, you downed the pain relievers and sunk back into the couch cushions. The ice stung against your tender, pulsing wounds and you hissed at the sensation. But as the cold rendered your face completely numb, you recanted your initial, ungrateful thoughts.
âWell, Iâm pretty sure heâd been drinking,â you rolled your eyes. It sent pain rocketing through your skull. âOne of the guys that pulled him off of me said the guy was slurring his words pretty badly and absolutely reeked of beer.â
âOh, perfect,â Bucky clenched his hands into tight fists. âDid anything happen to him? Is he gonna face any consequences?â
You offered him a downtrodden half-shrug. âIâm not sure. There were some security guards who escorted him out, but thatâs all I know.â
Bucky leaned over and brushed a light kiss to your cheek- the one that hadnât been marred by strangerâs fist. A razor-sharp feeling of helplessness carved deep into his flesh until it struck bone. He had a duty to you, and felt as though heâd failed. He couldnât save you. Couldnât protect you. Couldnât even take you to the emergency room.Â
All he could do at this point was try his best make you feel comfortable. Safe. And above all, he had to take care of you.Â
Alarm struck him in the chest as he noticed what appeared to be a fresh drop of scarlet oozing from your brow. He stood from the couch with worry pulsing through his veins. âSweetheart, Iâm gonna go get some supplies to tend to your cut. Okay? You stay here, Iâll be-â
âNo, thatâs okay, Buck. Itâs not that bad,â you shook your head, rejecting his offer; the throbbing inside your skull multiplied. Â
âBaby, youâre bleedingâŠâ
âWhat?â you removed the ice pack from your face and used your free hand to swipe a finger across your brow- only to find a warm, sticky sensation. âOh, I didnât even notice. My face is numb,â you brandished the ice pack at him.Â
Buckyâs soft laugh filled the room, âI guess thatâs a good thing?â
You gave him a careful nod. âDefinitely.â
âSit tight, doll. Itâll only take me a second.â
And he was right. He was only gone a few moments at the most; anything more than that felt unjustifiable.Â
âAlright, let me see,â Bucky took a seat on the coffee table and placed his first aid supplies down next to him. As carefully as he could, he took your face in his hands and appraised your wound. He used gentle pressure to hold a piece of clean gauze against the bloody ooze. And though the cut wasnât severe, it didnât stop the dread from circling him like a vulture.
âI shouldâve stuck around longer,â he lamented. âI shouldâve stayed at the festival. Maybe I couldâve helped you somehow. Maybe I couldâve-â
Your hands found his forearms and wrapped gently around his wrists. âNo, Buck. I didnât want you going inside the haunt, regardless. Even if it was only to be my knight in shining armor.â
He stroked along your jaw with his cold, metallic thumb. âYou always put me first, donât you?â
âOf course,â you swept your thumbs over his skin, âIâd never dream of having it any other way.â
If there was one thing Bucky could count on, it was being your first priority. Heâd never imagined heâd meet anyone who valued him. Who saw his worth. But you did- you always did. And you placed him proudly on a pedestal as your number one. Nothing came before him; nothing could take his place. He mattered more to you than anything or anyone ever had.
You were the kindest, most understanding person heâd ever met. You saw the good in everyone, even if they couldnât see it themselves. And knowing that someone hurt you, that you were shown anything other than gentleness, killed him.
âBaby, Iâm- Iâm so sorry this happened. You didnât deserve it.â
You poked at the ice pack resting in your lap, âItâs fine. I mean, itâs not ideal. But Iâm not dying, or anything.â Your gaze dropped to the floor, âItâs really not a big deal.â
âHey, look at me,â Bucky waited for your eyes to meet his, but had no luck. âSweetheart, can you look at me? Please?â
After another long moment, you finally dragged your eyes upward. Bucky instantly clocked the tears gathering along your lash line.
âI know youâre not dying; I know this isnât life threatening- but itâs still a big deal,â he said. âWhat happened is not okay. And you donât have to pretend like it is.â
You rolled your eyes, sending a tear trailing down your cheek. âBut youâve been through a lot worse. I got punched- so what?â You scoffed, âYou were abused for close to a hundred years. What happened to me isnât-â
âThat doesnât mean you canât be upset,â he said. âYou donât have to compare your life to mine, sweetheart. No one shouldâve laid a hand on you- tonight or ever.â He searched your face for a long moment, âOkay?â
It took a while for his words to sink in. For you to believe them. Rebuttals formed on your tongue every few seconds, but the concern in Buckyâs eyes banished them.
âOkay.â
A sigh of relief left his chest, and he delivered a long kiss to your forehead. He didnât want you to diminish the events of the evening all because of him. Didnât want you constantly using his suffering as a litmus test for your own. He knew youâd never consider your trauma as worthwhile if it always had to stand up to his.
With a fresh piece of gauze, he swiped the tears from your eyes. âGood. I love you.â
This wasnât what you expected out of life. You were the last of your friends to find something real. To find someone worthwhile. And you assumed youâd missed your window. All of your exes treated you like you barely existed. Like you werenât worth their time. None of them were ever concerned about your happiness or your well-being. And after dating more assholes than you could count, you resigned yourself to a life without romantic love.
And then Bucky spilled coffee all over your shoes, and youâd never been happier to have stained sneakers.
Bucky used a butterfly bandage to carefully close your cut and fetched you a fresh cup of cider. He took care of you in a way youâd never experienced. In a way youâd never thought possible. And after the night you had, all you wanted was to curl up on the couch with him. You wanted to fall asleep in his arms and forget all about what happened.Â
But just as Bucky took his rightful place next to you on the couch, he was gone.
âBuck, where are you-â
âI almost forgot!â he called from down the hall. And just as quickly as he vanished, he reappeared with his hands behind his back. âThose carnival games are really hard- I mean, really fucking hard. And it took me all night, but I won this for you.â
With a quiet âTa-da!â he revealed his prize and held it out for you.Â
âI know heâs kind of ugly,â Bucky laughed, âBut-â
âHeâs not ugly!â You snatched the prize and held it close to your chest.
It was a little black teddy bear with orange spots- and upon further inspection, the orange spots appeared to be jack-o-lanterns. An orange and black plaid bow sat perched around the bearâs neck, and a tiny witchâs hat rested atop his head.
âBuck, heâs perfect,â you reached for him, pulling him down for a long, deep kiss before he even had the chance to sit. âI love him!â
âIâm so glad, it took me longer to win him than Iâd like to admit,â Bucky laughed. âIâm sure Sam will happily tell you all about it.â
Once again, you captured Buckyâs lips with yours. Sure, you were exhausted. And hurting. And sad. But as Buckyâs hand cradled your face, and the prize heâd worked so hard to win for you rested against your chest, the pain of the evening melted away.
âThank you, Buck.â
He shot you a wink, âAnytime, I-â
 âI mean it,â you abandoned your new teddy bear for only a second and took one of Buckyâs hands in both of yours. It took most of your strength, but you finally got him to take his spot next to you on the couch, âThank you.â
His arm snaked around you and pulled you tightly into his side. âIâve always got your back, baby.â
With your new teddy bear resting in your lap, you snuggled as close to Bucky as you possibly could. He brought you a sense of peace, a sense of safety that youâd never experienced before. All he ever wanted to do was take care of you, and you thanked the universe every day for granting you someone so gentle and kind and sweet.
Bucky put on a classic Halloween movie from your childhood, Halloweentown, to help you feel a little more at ease. And it came as no surprise to him that you were asleep less than fifteen minutes in, but he didnât mind. He simply pulled you into his chest and carefully carried you to bed- along with your new stuffed animal.Â
And as he climbed in next to you, he couldnât have been more grateful for your cautionary words about the haunt. He thought about how different the night couldâve been, how much worse things mightâve gone had he stepped foot inside the dark, scary environment. What if he had a bad reaction and hurt one of your coworkers? What if he hurt you? If heâd been the one to strike you in the dark, you absolutely wouldâve required an ambulance and a hospital stay.Â
Just thinking about his metal fist connecting with your face made him nauseous. With a shake of his head, he forced the thoughts away. You were okay, you were right there next to him, sleeping soundly with your teddy bear tucked safely in your arms. He eyed you in the light of the moon, and thanked any deity who would listen for keeping him out of the haunt.
Just as he considered allowing his eyes to close, you moved. You loosened your grip on your bear and let him fall to the side as your sleepy hands searched for Bucky. He moved closer to you and watched with a smile as you draped your body over his. A tired, contented sigh fell from your lips, and Bucky thought his heart might melt.
He knew he didnât deserve you. Knew heâd done so much wrong in his life. But now that you were his, heâd spend every day trying to protect you. Trying to make you happy.Â
He couldnât wait to spend the rest of his life with you. He was already planning to offer you a ring next October- doing so during any other month felt like sacrilege.Â
History of Magic is usually an easy subject. Sit down, take notes, look over the assignment, complete it during dinner or before bed, and you're done.
But today everything but that is happening. You managed to get all the way to sitting down and pulling out your parchment and quill before the words Professor Binns says all mesh together. Nothing makes sense.
And you know it's due to the ache behind your eyes, the pounding in your head and the ache in your bones.
The last few nights you haven't slept, not really at least. It's nearing the end of this year at Hogwarts so everyone is preparing to go home. Planning what they will do with one another over break before the new year starts up. Talking about their family traditions, and a feeling of excitement takes the castle.
Despite this, a feeling of dread has been following you like your own personal rain cloud. The knowledge you'll have to return home eating you alive. Knowing you won't be able to contact Remus or Regulus, less your parents find out you're dating them, making you feel like you're choking on your heart.
The memories you've made this year really should weigh out the weeks you will spend with your family. In the stiff place, you're forced to call home with strict rules and expectations. Yet, you feel horrible. And it's been causing you to force yourself into your studies for the upcoming tests. Avoiding sleep due to nightmares that have recently plagued your mind.
Which leads to now, the room spinning slowly on an axis, ans Professor Binns slightly to blurry, even for a ghost. You know you need to zone back in, drink some water, take a vitamin potion or even visit Madam Pomfrey at this rate. Yet you can't make yourself do it.
Continuing to stay in your zoned out state till the end of class. And that's when even you draw the line.
Standing up from your seat as everyone filters out, albeit a little you're moving a little slower than usual, you exit in search of your boyfriends. Either or both. And it's not exactly a very long search, quickly finding yourself face to face with Regulus Black and Remus Lupin.
"Hey, dove." Remus' voice is sweet, per usual, like the comfort of a spoon full of honey on a sore throat.
Regulus doesn't speak for a full moment, analyzing you. To anyone else it would look judgmental, but the softness in his eyes and slight pull at the edge of his lips tell you differently.
"Hi, Rem." The boys look at one another, an unspoken conversation playing out.
"Why don't we go to my dorm?" Remus looks back to you, "haven't had much time for the three of us. James and Sirius have quidditch, and Peter is going to his study group."
"I'm down." Without another word, the three of you walk towards Gryffindor tower.
áŻâ
Remus knows that Regulus tends to be a little quieter the closer to the end of the year, having been around the other Black brother for a while now. Already knowing how closed off Sirius would get when he still lived at the Black Manor, building up the walls early to protect himself when he left.
Even now, Sirius does it. Remus isn't sure if it's a habit or the fact that Regulus has been refusing to take the offer to stay at Potter Manor as well.
But you? You, he's not sure. Remus knows you and Regulus have known one another longer than he's known you, and that's never really bothered him. Remus knows all three of you love one another, and he's never felt left out. But know? Know he wishes you'd talk about your own home life.
Regulus doesn't like talking about his experiences at home; the only thing Remus knows is from old stories from Sirius. And Remus will never pry, not wanting to force either of you to do anything you don't want to.
But Merlin, he feels nearly useless right now, wishing to see the tension in your shoulders calm, wishing to see you and Regulus calm again. Wishing Regulus would take the offer to join them at Potter Manor. He wishes for both your safety more than anything.
The walk to the dorm is quite, but not peaceful. Everyone trying to stay calm and wishing someone else would say something. But no one knowing quite what to say to break the silence.
Once you do get up to the dorm, the Gryffindor's dorm, Regulus sets his bag by Remus' nightstand, you following suit, the emblems on your bags a contrast to the surrounding room. Regulus goes to find clothes he's left in Remus' closet before, while you sit on the lycans bed to slip off your shoes. Remus sits next to you, his hand resting on your lower back.
And finally, after far too long, Remus breaks the silence. "Dove..."
You glance up at him as you slip your shoes under the edge of his bed. "Yes?"
Remus sends a quick glance to Regulus, who's slipping on a long black sleeve shirt, one more comfortable than the previous Slytherin uniform. "I understand if you aren't comfortable with it, but..." He pauses for a moment, glancing back to look into your eyes, his thumb rubbing gentle strokes on your spine. "If you want to, you know you're welcome to stay at James' house."
Under his hand, Remus feels you tense, and from his peripheral, Regulus paused to listen.
"That's- that's okay, Remus. But tell James I appreciate the offer, please." You stand up far too fast for your lack of sleep, causing you to fall right back where you were sitting. Alerting both boys.
One of Remus' hands stay glued to your back, the other on your shoulder, as if your keen over. Regulus is quick to stand infront of you.
"Love, you should stay with them." Regulus' voice is full of worry. "It's better than any other option."
"You're not going." Your eyes shoot up to Regulus', far more defensive than you mean to be. Remus' hand, which was previously on your shoulder, moves down to the bed, the other hand continuing to run against your spine again.
"That's doesn't mean you shouldn't go." Regulus matches your defensiveness out of habit.
"You both should come." Remus talks before you can shoot back, hand on the bed finally moving to Regulus' arm, never seeming to catch a break.
There's a heavy pause. One that goes on for an uncomfortable amount of time.
"I'll think about it if you do." Your voice is more timid as you hold your stare at Regulus' eyes, his boring right back into you. Intense, deep, and so, so, loving.
Regulus sighs, "fine."
"Thank you, both. Seriously, you should come. James and Sirius want you guys there. Not to mention James' parents, they love new people." Remus kisses your hair line, standing up, hand leaving your back, before kissing Regulus on the lips. Both your bodies lossen.
Remus moves to change out of his uniform, and you quickly stand up to join him. Regulus' hand comes out to make sure you're steady as you grab a pair of sweats that no one truly knows who belongs to. They were probably once James, but at some point Lily stole them, and at a different point Sirius stole them back, and now so many of your friends have worn them at some point, it's probably weird.
Grabbing those and a jumper belonging to Regulus, you turn back to see Remus already curled around Regulus' back, who lays with enough room for you to join them. Both trying not to show just how eager they are for an afternoon nap.
You climb onto Remus' bed as well, using your wand to close the curtains, magically dimming the lights in the room before placing it on the bedside table. Curling into Regulus' front, leg thrown over his hip, you tuck your head into his neck. Yet your eyes remain open.
You definitely want to sleep, and you know you should, Remus is likely already asleep, knowing the bastard sleeps like the dead. Yet the knowing you could have another wretched nightmare makes you stay awake, staring over Regulus' shoulder the the golden brown hair tucked into his back, belonging to Remus, and letting the black hair belonging to Regulus slightly tickle your cheek.
"Go to sleep dove. Both of you. Please, you can't function without it." Remus' voice seems to startle both you and Regulus, both believing he was asleep, and believing the same about one another.
You pull back from Regulus neck, facing him, seeing the features of his face barely visible in the dark room. "We will, baby." Your voice is soft, as if you were telling a secret.
Remus merely hums and shift slightly before relaxing back into Regulus' back.
"Get some sleep, darling." Regulus kisses your cheek, "it's going to be okay in the end."
"I know. I know. We both need sleep; Remus is gonna kill us." Softly connecting your lips with his, slow and lazy, both smiling at the hum from Remus, confirming the empty threat you made for him.
You return to your being tucked into Regulus' neck. "'M sorry for being snappy with you." You mumble against his skin.
"You have nothing to apologies for, I understand where you're coming from darling." His hand rests on your hip and lower back, relaxing further into you and Remus, closer and closer to having a lovely nap. Of which, you join with the hopes of no nightmares.
I'm scared | Alexia Putellas x Reader | part 2
summary: first time that Alexia and reader talk about sex (specifically: masturbation) after the walk.
warnings: angst, allusion to past sexual abuses. really light smut moment (r comes home early and sees Alexia have orgasm using a vibrator).
words: 3k
Part 1
When you had spoken to Alexia about your past, about those experiences, you hadn't expected her to be so understanding and engaged in helping you.
Even though you knew she was a sweet person, kind, and in some way you knew she loved you, or was starting to develop strong feelings for you, up until that day you had believed she wouldn't stay with you once she found out what had happened to you.
Alexia is beautiful, charming, loved by hundreds of thousands of people; she's the captain of Spain and Barcelona, which means she's surrounded by beautiful women, a lot of them probably much more predisposed to have sex with her and much less anxious about it. She's famous, so not only fans and other footballers would want something with her, but also other celebrities, like models or actresses or singers.
Alexia doesn't just play football, she's also a football activist, a model and she works with some brands, which means she works in contexts that allow her to meet many (beautiful) women.
All these things had made it difficult for you to think that she would stay after that walk.
She took you home once you had returned to the car because the next day she had to go to Madrid for work with Nike. Before getting out of the car, you had kissed her and, thinking it was the last time, you had tried to imprint the image of Alexia so close to your face in your memory. You thought you wouldn't see her again and that she wouldn't contact you anymore, that she would ghost you or break up with you by message.
You had spent that night sleepless, tears flowing heavily from your eyes and nausea that had forced you to sit on the bathroom floor for a few hours, the retching had painfully contracted your body several times during those hours. Even though you hated yourself every time you did it, you kept checking your phone hoping to see a notification from her, a message, a post sent on Instagram or TikTok, and the more time passed, the more you received no news from her, the more nausea and the tears increased, the more you believed you had lost her forever.
Yet, the next day, the sound of the doorbell had woken you up. You had struggled to get out of bed, the headache was killing you and your back seemed to be broken in two by the pain, the sweat covering your forehead was a symptom of yet another nightmare that had invaded your sleep.Â
You looked at the video intercom and saw a delivery man. "Yes, who's there?" you had asked, your voice hoarse, ruined by crying.
"Hello, I'm from Bakery Adele, I was told I have to deliver this order to this address" the delivery guy had replied, his voice annoyingly shrill, before asking for confirmation of identity.
You had told him he could leave it at the concierge and that you would come down later, but he had persuaded you by saying there was a piping hot double espresso cappuccino and a freshly baked cream-filled brioche waiting for you.
You had put on a jacket that was hanging on the coat rack, a jacket of Alexia, and had gone down. The delivery guy handed you the breakfast, a little note attached to the package, and then said goodbye.
Bakery Adele doesn't do deliveries, never.
Once you had entered the house, you had opened the note, and tears had returned when you had read it.
"I thought of ordering your favorite breakfast from your bakery. Whenever you feel like it, if you want, write to me or call me, I'm always here. I miss you, but I'll wait for you to feel ready to talk to me. Alexia <3"
Tears, tears, and more tears.
You had bitten your lip as you grabbed your phone to video call her. You didn't care about the condition of your face or your hair at that moment, you only cared about seeing if it was true, if she was sincere. You had spent the whole night thinking she hadn't written to you because she didn't want to talk to you anymore, only to find out she was waiting for you?
"Amor," her voice, her sweet voice, invaded the deafening silence of your home.
"Ale-" you had replied trying to articulate a sentence, but inevitably ending up crying.
"What's wrong, amor? Are you okay?" she was worried, her eyebrows furrowed and her eyes squinted.
"I thought you didn't want me anymore and now the breakfast has arrived and I don't understand and-" You start speaking quickly, thoughts overlapping in your mind one after another, as you try to express yourself, to tell her how confused you feel right now.
"Take a breath, amor breath with me. Did you think I wouldn't call you? - you shook your head - Amor, I told you I'm in love with you, why would I leave you?"
You hadn't talked much, actually, because she was about to enter the store and there was a lot of confusion, but she had called you back that evening.
And the day after, and the day after that, until she had shown up at your house with takeout Chinese food.
A couple of days after she returned, you had asked if you could talk, if you could talk about what had happened. You knew that the best idea would have been to go to her place, a place from which it would have been easy to run away from her if things didn't go as you hoped, and not to your place, where Alexia could have stayed even against your will; but the emotional comfort you felt being in your own home was crucial to be able to talk to her, to face the situation.
You were at your home, on the couch: you were sitting cross-legged, your hands holding hers, and you had told her that you understood if this thing was bigger than her, if she didn't want to wait for some time to do something sexual, but you had also told her that a part of you would have wanted her to stay because you wanted to face this thing with her, that you truly wanted to face it.
Alexia, hesitant, had told you, after a while of talking, that she thought it was appropriate for you to start a therapy process, maybe also to go to therapy together, because only then could you fully face the trauma. She also made sure to tell you that if you couldn't afford it continuously over time or with the right frequency, she would help you financially because, yes, facing it, but with the right psychologist. Shyly, she had told you that she had done a couple of searches on the best psychologists in Barcelona for this type of trauma and had found one really good, and that she would also be available to do couple therapy.
You had told her you would think about it and a few days later you had contacted one of the psychologists on her list.
The initial doubts about her seriousness in being faithful to you and not seeking anyone else for sexual satisfaction surfaced when she left for a National Team camp, and they exploded when you thought she was cheating on you with Jenni. The endless social media edits you continued to see fueled the doubt that perhaps, while genuinely attempting to complete the therapeutic journey, she was seeking to fulfill her sexual desire with someone else in secret.
At the third couple's therapy session after that camp, you addressed the issue. You had resignedly told her that you wanted to know if she was with other women, that you would understand but needed to know. She was shocked. She had told you multiple times that she only wanted you, that she would wait for you, that she didn't want anyone else, that she didn't want Jenni.
You had discussed it several times in therapy over the next two weeks, and even outside of therapy, but Alexia always said the same thing:Â I will wait for you, I want you.
The doubts had more or less disappeared when few weeks later you caught her having an orgasm with a vibrator while she thought you were still out. You were on holiday in the Canary Islands, you had gone out to do some shopping and go to an open-air market while she was sleeping, and you had left her a message saying you wouldn't be back in two hours; too bad the open-air market was on Thursday, not Tuesday, so you had returned after a little over half an hour.Â
As soon as you entered the house, you heard moans and silently approached the bedroom, only to see her in the middle of the bed, her hand between her legs and a buzzing sound in the background accompanying her moans.Â
You froze in place, not knowing what to do, or what to say.Â
You didn't even know she had a vibrator. You hadn't really thought about it, actually.
You hadn't even had time to think about how to react because shortly after she reached the peak of pleasure, so you quickly moved towards the door, opened and closed it more loudly, pretending you had just entered. You didn't know why you did it, maybe you thought it would be easy to pretend you hadn't seen her, but you were wrong, especially for two reasons: seeing her climax had made you incredibly horny and you couldn't remove the image of her having an orgasm from your mind, so you couldn't even look her in the eyes.
Alexia had sensed something was wrong and asked you if everything was okay at dinner, when she asked if she had done something wrong. You almost choked on the water you were drinking, your cheeks suddenly burning, as you tried to come up with some excuses, only to give in.
"Amor, I don't know how to say it - you lowered your gaze, embarrassed to admit it, afraid she would get angry - I... today I came home earlier than you think and I-I saw you-"
"Fuck - Alexia exclaimed bluntly - Amor, I'm sorry, I... it shouldn't have happened, I thought you'd be back later," her tone suddenly guilty, as if masturbating were a fault.
"Are you sorry? - you asked, looking her in the eyes, and she nodded, her face red with embarrassment - But... why?"
Her expression became confused. "I-you weren't supposed to see me, I don't want you to think-"
"Since when you do it?" you asked, then realized the stupidity of the question when the older woman tilted her head to the side; you tried to change the subject, but she asked you to talk about it, to ask her, because it was important for her that you talked about it.
"Do you want to know if I've been doing it since we started dating or when I started doing it in general?" her tone was so calm, so relaxed, that you trusted her, trusted that she really just wanted to talk about it.
That was the first time you had talked so specifically about your sexual life, at least hers.Â
She had told you she lost her virginity to a girl when she was fifteen, started using sex toys at sixteen, that throughout her relationship with Jenni they had been an integral part of the relationship, but she started using them less when she broke up with her because at that point she was having a lot of casual sex.
"I had sex with other women before I met you, both occasional and steady partners, so I didn't really need to use them to have an orgasm. Then we met, the relationship became serious and we started dating, so I stopped seeing other people, and when I realized we wouldn't have sex, I started using them more often. Since you told me about your past, I've started using them frequently again."
You bit your lip as you listened to her, it was evident that she was hesitant, choosing her words carefully, but at the same time she was so sure, so calm. The calmness with which she spoke about it almost gave you comfort, almost reassured you that she wasn't lying, that what she was saying was true.
"You can ask me anything, amor, none question is stupid."
"Do you do it because we don't have sex?"
She nodded hesitantly. "How does this make you feel? - you raised your eyebrows, confused - I don't want this thing to make you feel bad."
"It makes sense that you do it - you replied, your tone devoid of negative emotions - We don't have sex and you need to... have an orgasm. Why didn't you tell me?"
She took a sip of water in an attempt to stall. "I... I thought you would take it badly, that you would feel guilty or something, and I didn't want that. I told you I want to wait for you, but I was afraid that if I told you you would think that I necessarily need someone to have sex with or for me to tell you to speed things up - she sighed - But as you saw, my sex toys give me great orgasms and I could go on just with them for years" she continued, trying to relax the tension that had been created with her answer.
You chuckled with her, even though you were sorry she did it in secret, that she did it only when you weren't there, that she was afraid you would take it badly.
It was her first orgasm you had seen, and you had never really thought about the fact that she could be satisfied in other ways than having sex with other people.
"I had never thought that you would seek orgasms in other ways than sex - you simply stated - It's a stupid thing, sorry."
"It's not, actually. We've never talked about this, about maybe masturbating or actually wanting to have sex, regardless of whether we do it or not - the reflective tone, the calm voice - For example, when I feel the need to have an orgasm, use a vibrator because the orgasms I have using it are generally more satisfying than when I just use my fingers; but when I want to have sex, as well as an orgasm, I use my fingers because they feel closer to what I could have having sex with you."
You widened your eyes at the revelation, at how calmly she said it. You knew it was normal for her to be calm, you were glad she talked about it freely, but you didn't expect her to be so sincere.
"I've said too much, sorry. Please forget it," she continued, her voice concerned, her gaze now on the plate, her hands quickly grabbing the fork and knife to put them on the plate.
"No! - you replied, scaring her - Sorry, I don't know how to talk about it, but I'd like to, I like that we talk about it."
There was a pause, Alexia was simply smiling at you, perhaps surprised that you were actually having this conversation, perhaps because she didn't know what to say.
"I masturbate thinking about you," you said, a statement.
The woman in front of you widened her eyes, a choked moan escaped her mouth, the dismay obvious.
"When I do it I-I think about the two of us having sex or-or... doing sexual things - you lowered your gaze, a sense of humiliation invading your body when she said nothing - Please don't be mad at me"
You close your eyes, scared at the idea that she might start yelling that it's disrespectful, that it's wrong for you to do it, or, worse, that she might get up to hurt you, or physically punish you for it.
"Get mad? Why should I get mad? - her voice confused - It's normal for you to masturbate, to seek orgasm."
"Even if it's not with you?" she nodded "It's just that we don't have sex but I masturbate and... doesn't it make you mad?"
Your voice sounded more frightened than you wanted, but it was true that you feared she would get angry. You didn't want to have sex with her, you were afraid to have sex with her, but you touched yourself thinking of her; how could she take it?
"I'm glad you can touch yourself, that at least that part of your sexuality hasn't been broken," she moved her hands towards yours, squeezing them between hers "There's nothing wrong, amor, I'd be a selfish insecure person to think otherwise."
You bit your lip as you looked at her, admiring her. How could she always know what to say, always say the right thing?
"So, did you like to watch me while I touch myself?" you coughed embarrassed, not knowing what to say, or how to explain it.
You had enjoyed watching her come, even though it was by chance and for a short time, even though it was an unexpected thing that shouldn't have happened. The image of her coming, of her orgasm, was imprinted in your mind.
"I- you were just so beautiful when you came. I don't know how to say it, I feel stupid, and- it was like, I don't know - you sighed frustrated - it's just that I wish it were me making you come like that, not a vibrator."
"There's time, amor," she told you.
She was right, there was time, but you wanted to be the one instead of that vibrator.
I'm sorry it took me so long to post this, a few bad things happened and I didn't have the mind to write. this is a text that I wrote about two weeks ago but I only translated it last night; I'm not 100/100 satisfied, but I wanted to introduce a moment of discussion about sex before anything sexual could happen. I dealt with the topic of insecurity and jealousy in a very light way (perhaps superficially) but it seemed like the only way to introduce the moment on holiday. the hardest part for me, and what makes me a little dissatisfied, was trying to figure out whether what I wrote about accidentally seeing Alexia have an orgasm was itself a violation of consent, or could be construed as an accident (which it actually is); I chose to interpret it as an accident that Alexia knew could happen and to avoid the parties considering it a violation of consent. If this seems wrong to you, or will trigger a lot of people, I think I'll revisit this chapter. as usual, thanks for reading what I wrote :)
Everything in your life was enveloped by him. your clothes smelled like him, small strands of his hair were woven into every nook and cranny of your apartment together, his fitness regime protein powder and ketogenic supplements were littered in your kitchen cabinets.Â
You couldnât get rid of him, not even if you tried. Aemond was all you'd ever knownâ you have known one another since the age of seven, and have been in a relationship since fourteen. You were both now twenty-six. Twelve years youâve been together romantically (longer, even, but you were both too stubborn to admit it) and nineteen years youâve been in each other's lives in some capacity or another.Â
Youâve been involved together longer than youâve not known each other. You hardly knew who you were without Aemondâ a thought that scared you deeply.Â
Itâs been two weeks since he moved out, only temporarily heâd said. He needed space. He would still pay his share of the rent and you didnât need to worry about that.Â
But what about everything else? What about him warming you at night? Comforting you when you had nightmares? What about his items in the fridge, surely youâd spoil if he didnât use them soon. What about Vhagar? Theirâ no, his geriatric cat that he took with him to God knows whereâ she must be terrified, surely.Â
Was he giving Vhagar her medicine before bed? Of course he wasâ he was the more responsible one anyway.Â
You paced back and forth until the soles of your feet ached and then some. Knowing Aemond for so long, you had intimate knowledge on everything about him, you were woven into each other's DNA like vines on a trellis, growing and expanding until you swallowed all of the other plants whole.Â
That is what happened, wasnât it? You grew too large, too comfortable and became stagnant. You weren't unaware of his rising workload at his firm, but he had always been a workaholicâ throughout their teenage years, through college and grad school. It never slowed him down so you didnât understand the change in behavior.Â
Aemond was closed off. He always was a bit emotionally stunted due to his upbringing or lack thereof from his father and everything that happened surrounding his eye, but he had a soft side for you, always for you. You could retrace every part of him perfectly from memory, always could make him laugh, could comfort him when he recused himself, and the rare times he did cry, you were there.Â
But the last few months there was a shiftâ a change in him. Where he had been hard to open before, like a rusty hinge just requiring some oil, he was now padlocked, ironclad and impenetrable. Attempts to talk were shrugged off, ignored or diverted.Â
âPlease, just talk to me, Aemond,â you said one night as you sat on the couch. You were watching your collective favorite show and he wasnât even commenting on it like he usually did, he was silent and deadpanned. âI donât understand whatâs wrong if you donât talk about it.âÂ
âThere's nothing wrong, therefore, nothing to talk about. Iâm just tired from work,â he responded gruffly. âStop whining.âÂ
His tone was clipped and harsh, sending a wave of hurt trickling through your body. you were overly emotional, where he was under emotionalâ usually, you balanced each other out and struck a good middle ground, but in times like these, during fights, things would get explosive.Â
The tears started right away, your little sniffling cries stifled by a hand over your mouth. You turned away, wrapping yourself in the blanket.Â
âSeriously?â he growled, âI didnât even say anything and youâre fucking crying again.â
âI d-donât appreciate your tone, Aemondâ youâre being mean,â you sniffed, wiping away tears that were soon just replaced by new ones. âPlease, donât be mean to me.â you were always soft hearted, and it was one of the things Aemond loved about youâ or he had loved at one point.Â
âIâm not being mean,â he pinched his brow, âyouâre overreacting and I do not have the capacity to deal with your antics anymore.âÂ
Of course, your mind hit the panic button. âAnymoreâ meaning that he didnât want to deal with you at all, ever. The tears increased and you recused yourself further into a ball.Â
âFucking hell.â he cursed, getting up from the couch and stomping outside to the balcony, lighting up a cigarette. He was out there for about an hourâ you had cried yourself to sleep.Â
It was many situations like that for weeks that finally just⊠broke him.Â
âI canât do this anymore,â he said one day, slamming his keys down on the kitchen table, âI seriously cannot deal with your childish shit anymoreâ Iâm working my ass off at the firm, actually bringing in money and I still have to come home and tend to you. youâre twenty-six, grow up and stop crying at every little thing. Itâs fucking infuriating.âÂ
âYou know I canât control that part of me!â you screamed back, your temper rising immediately to match his. The words flowing out of your mouth didnât feel like yours, but some sort of defensive mechanism. âYou canât do this anymore? Youâre not doing anything Aemond, except pushing me away. God, you havenât even touched me in weeks.âÂ
âOh, so this is about sex?â he countered, getting closer to you, nostrils flaring. âYouâre mad because I wonât fuck you? Are you that desperate?âÂ
That one stung, to be sure. Aemond had been your first and onlyâ you only ever knew him, only ever had him. âNo, not just sex,â you murmured, âyou havenât even⊠just touched me normally. No hugs, no little caresses, nothingâ it's as if Iâm an aversion to you.â
He backed up from you, âMaybe weâre just too close,â he admitted, âWeâve been together too long. It's not fun anymore, itâs not newâ itâs the same old, same old, going through the motions for release, not because I actually like it.âÂ
âI donât understand.â you said, your voice sounding disconnected from your body. The tips of your fingers felt numb, the numbness spreading through your body, your heart pounding in your chest as if it wanted to escape.Â
âI need space. I need to think about this.âÂ
âThis?â
âUs. I need to think about us and if this is something I really want,â he paused, âYouâre⊠too much and not enough right now.âÂ
âWhâ Aemond, please,â you whispered, your voice broken, âWhat can I do? Iâll⊠Iâll change, I wonât cry or whine anymoreâ please.âÂ
He stared at you, his prosthetic eye unmoving while his remaining one bored into you, âI will think about it.âÂ
âWhat⊠does this mean?â
âWe are taking a break, alright? Iâll have my essentials out and Iâm going to stay with Aegon.âÂ
âPleaseâ donât go. I need you.âÂ
That was the end of that conversation. That was the last time you spoke, two weeks ago. You expected him to text you at some point, to check in on you, to maybe try to talk things out.Â
Nothing. There's been nothing. Radio silence.Â
You felt isolatedâ you had no family, as your parents were estranged from you. you couldnât go to Aemondâs family, as close as you were to them all, it just simply wasnât an option.Â
You didnât have friends. All you knew was Aemond.Â
It was early in the evening and you were in a deep pit of self-loathing. You decided to text him.Â
You swallowed thicklyâ the green meant he either turned off his phone or blocked you. You hoped that it wasnât the latter.Â
The next few weeks were a blur. You felt like you were barely living, merely going through the motions to stay aliveâ not that you really were.Â
You woke up, went to work, came home, scrounged up food and then went to sleep. Rinse and repeat.
Weeks become months of your monotony, and no word from Aemond. He still had half of his stuff left in the apartment, you felt like you could barely breathe. At every turn there was something to remind you of him.Â
Youâd lived in this apartment together for four years, the evidence of your relationship etched into the very walls. It was like the space was closing in on you and you couldnât catch your breath, barely keeping your head above water.Â
You had to move outâ you had to get away.Â
You managed to find a place, a cheap studio above a coffee shop downtown. The landlord was an old lady who was sympathetic to your situation and agreed to let you take the space quickly.Â
There was still the matter of your and Aemondâs current apartmentâ or, rather, it was just Aemondâs now.Â
Saving yourself the embarrassment of seeing if you were still blocked, you called Aegon. He was a better messenger than none.Â
âHey, Egg,â you said, sitting on the couch. you bounced your knee up and down, biting at the skin of your lip. You and Aegon were amicable, not necessarily as close as you and Aemond, but you grew up together. Aegon ran in different social circles than you and you were somewhat polar opposites so you never really stuckâ you did have your phases of friendship, thoughâ which pissed Aemond off to no end. âUm, I donât know if this is the right way to go about things but, do you mind relaying a message to Aemond for me?â
âYeah, âspose I could. Whatâs up?â Aegon replied, his tone nonchalant like usual.
âIâm moving out of the apartment into my own place, so I guess he can go back. Iâll have all my stuff out by tomorrow.â
âFuckinâ finally,â Aegon said, âHeâs been driving me up the wall with his tidy, feng shui bullshit. He rearranged my whole place like five times and has taken up all the space in my cabinets with that nasty no-carb shit,â he paused for a moment, âI⊠didnât mean that in a bad way to you, âcourse. Iâm sorry it had to come to this. Heâs a fucking idiot.â
That made you laugh, genuinely. Your first laugh in months. âYeahâ he⊠tends to do that. He left half of his stuff here, it feels like Iâm living in the twilight zone. I just⊠gotta get away, you know?â
âHey, I get thatâ you donât have to explain yourself to me. Heâs a dickhead and doesnât understand how good he has it. If you want, I can bring my truck over tomorrow and help you move stuff.â
âYou donât have to if you donât want to, Egg.â
âI want toâ please.â
Your brow furrowedâ Aegon usually wasnât so persistent on anything unless it involved drinking or drugs. But, you hadnât had real human contact in eons besides at work so⊠maybe it could be good.
âOkay, see you tomorrow. Thank you, really.â
â
It was rainy the next dayâ nasty and wet, droplets pouring down like tears. It felt somewhat familiar.
But, Aegon showed up like he promised, rolling up in his old, fading yellow pick-up truck. His hair was much shorter than you remembered and he looked actually well keptâ Aemond mustâve been whipping him into shape.
He waved and ran through the rain, standing under the eave, âSoâ itâs raining.â
You snorted, âI think I can see that,â you teased with a tiny smile, âNot sure when itâll let up.â
âI brought uhâŠâ he paused for a moment to think, stretching out his arms in a square shape, âYâknow?â
âA tarp?âÂ
âYupâ that,â he gave a lopsided grin, inviting himself in through the open door, âyou arenât going to kick me out if I donât take off my shoes, right?â
You glanced down at his bootsâ they were a bit muddy and definitely wet. Aemond wouldnât have let him step two feet through the threshold without taking them off. Butâ you weren't Aemond. âNo, keep them on if you want. Itâs not my problem if you track dirt through the place anyway.â
He nodded, taking his phone out of his pocket for a moment and shooting a quick message to someone. âSorry I havenât been around, itâs just⊠heâs my brother. It would be kind of⊠I dunno, crossing some sort of unsaid boundary if I visited his⊠girlfriend?â
âEx-girlfriend. I guess,â you corrected softlyâ but you didnât really know yourself what it was. He wouldnât talk to you, âItâs fine. I didnât expect anyone to really reach out anyway, because of that⊠unsaid boundary thing.â
âWe shouldâve. youâre a part of our family with or without Aemond. Me, Helaena and Daeron have a whole group chat about it. Even mom asked where youâve been,â he scratched the back of his head absentmindedly as he sent out another text, âSomeone shouldâve checked up sooner.â
âYouâre acting like Iâm some sort of neglected puppy, Aegon,â you turned to him, â... do I really look so terrible?â
Aegon glanced up at you, his mouth formed in a hard line. He cracked his knuckles, shrugging his shoulders. âI wonât lie to you. You look half dead.â
You blinked. Hard. Moving towards a mirror in the hall, you looked at yourself. Dark circles under sunken eyes, your skin was a pale pallor and your hair needed a trim desperately, your split ends curled and fettered. You were gaunt, as wellâ having lost a bit of weight over the months. âJesus,â you muttered. Glancing over at Aegon, he was texting again. âSending an update to the group chat, I guess? âGood news, sheâs still alive, barelyâ?â
He snorted, âYeahâ something like that,â finally, he locked his phone and slipped it in his pocket. âI made sure to text Aemond, too.â
Your mouth felt dry at the mention. âWhy?â
âHe asked.â
âAsked?â
âHe asked me to⊠make sure you were okay.â
Goosebumps prickled at your skin, the ever familiar feeling of nausea and despair swirling in the pit of your stomach. Nibbling at your lip more, you turned away, feeling a bit too exposed. âAnd whatâd you say?â
âI said you were alive but you are not okay.â
Your lips pursed into a line as you tasted a bit of copper in your mouth from chewing on your lip. âI guess thatâs right,â you muttered, âWhy would he ask?â
âAemond is⊠complicated. you know that better than anyone. I donât know what kind of bug he has up his ass these last few months but⊠even through all of this, he still cares.â
âLike hell he does,â you snapped, feeling the sting of tears, âIf he did, he wouldâve given us a chance to talk it out, to⊠to try, maybe even go to therapy, I donât fucking knowâ he wouldâve reached outâ anyone shouldâve reached out,â your hand went to your hair, right at your hairline at your scalp, picking at the hairs thereâ another self-destructive habit youâve picked up in your months of isolation, âIâm so fucking alone, Aegon. He knows⊠you all know I have absolutely no one else. Iâve been going through this on my own. I have no friends, no familyâ no brother to go live with when I need space, no family group chat. I donât have shit, Aegon. All Iâve ever known in my life is him and you and Helaena and Daeron and mom. Why⊠why does it feel like I was cast off the island without even⊠a tribal council or something?â you sniffed, the tears coming in full force now.Â
Aegon was silent, coming up behind you. âIâm⊠sorry,â he murmured, putting his hands on your shoulders, as frail and skeletal as you were, âWe shouldâve been better. We⊠will be better.â he turned you around and pulled you into his chest, enveloping you in his arms. âWe thought you wouldâve been⊠fine without him. He made it seem like thatâ that you were strong enough. I only figured it out yesterday when he was up my ass about texting him as soon as I saw you. He needed to know if you were feeding yourself, if you were keeping up with your medication, if you still had nightmares. A fuckinâ... laundry list of questionsâ I told him to stick his questions up where the sun donât shine and to see for himself,â he took a breath, âHe settled on one questionâ if you were okay.â
âI think he got his fucking answer, then,â you whispered, âI am not okay. I havenât been okay in months. I⊠I need help.â
âI know,â Aegon shifted you slightly to look at your face, âWeâll help youâ I promise, you wonât be alone anymore. Look, Iâll even add you to the group chat, okay? Iâll rename it to âAemond Sucksâ, how does that sound?âÂ
You cracked a tiny smile, sniffling. âYeah⊠Iâd like that.â
âÂ
You ended up moving your belongings to your new place the same day, effectively ridding yourself of the constant shadow of Aemondâs memory.
Aegon even took you to Michaelâs and HomeGoods to get stuff for your little studio, so you could really make it yours. It was a bit intimidating at firstâ you weren't used to being able to decorate things the way you wanted, as Aemond always opted to keep things simple and minimalistic.Â
You, admittedly, went all out. Your new studio looked like a Pinterest board titled âcottagecoreâ. You were incredibly happy with it all, practically jumping up and down at it.
âIt looks so good! I love these little mushroom chairs you picked out, Egg,â you hummed, patting some plush felted stools in the shape of mushrooms, which you put near the window. âI bet Helaena would love it.â
âLetâs take some pictures for the group chat, Hel will literally be all over this. you two always love that cottagecore, fairycore, fantasy⊠shit.â he grinned, stooping down to take some very out of perspective pictures of the mushroom chairs, making them look fifty feet tall.
You settled into your new place quickly, having Helaena, Aegon and Daeron over quite often for drinks and movies. Your health steadily improved until you were mostly back to normal physicallyâ there would be a lot of scars internally, however that would take longer to heal, if you ever would. You had developed a trust issue complex since Aemondâs unceremonious exit from your life and hadnât gone on any dates, you didnât know when or if you would ever be ready. They did you the courtesy of not mentioning Aemond, until Daeron said something odd.
It was about four months after you moved in, and almost a full year since youâd last seen Aemond. You were all a few mixed drinks in, Aegon had made them and you were heavy on the alcohol, light on the âmixâ, and you were all kicked back on the couch, with Aegon laying on the mushroom chairs stacked next to each other, lazed back like a cat.Â
âMom says she wants you over for Christmas dinner,â Daeron said, taking a sip of his drink, âShe figured itâd be fine with Aemond going off with his newâŠâ he blinked, catching himself.Â
Helaena nudged Daeron in the ribs as a warning, staring at their friend warily.
â... his new? His new what?â you asked, your voice so quiet that it mustâve been like a squeak.
â... new girlfriend.â he finished.
You were silent for a while before sighing. âI figured it would happen eventually. I can only hope that it⊠wasnât too soon after we broke upâ or whatever⊠happened.â
âWe all told him it was fucked up that he just left and ghosted you, lovey. Even mom got on his ass about it, and he is her favorite child who usually can do no wrong.â Helaena put her drink down, wrapping her arm around you. âYou should come to Christmas dinner, everyone would be super happy to see you! And Aemond wonât be there, so even more reason to come. Please.â she whimpered, using her best puppy-dog face.
You mulled it over in your mind for a few moments. You couldnât think of anything more painful than being alone during the holidays, so you nodded.
â
It was snowing on Christmas day, the flurries coming down and melting against your skin as you waited for Aegon to pick you up. You were wearing a red checkered tapestry dress with a flannel jacket, a white fluffed scarf wrapped around your neck and lower face. As soon as you saw the familiar color of Aegonâs truck, you practically booked it into the passenger seat.Â
âMerry Christmas, you look fantastic,â Aegon mused, ever the charmer. âIâve got the heater on full blast, I promiseâ but yâknow my old boyâs puttering these days. Weâll need to get some speed for it to really warm up.âÂ
âMmm,â you murmured, your teeth chattering, âSâcold.âÂ
He reached back and grabbed a well-used blanket, draping it over your legs. âBetter?â
â... yeahâ but,â you blinked, raising a brow. âWhat do you have this in the truck for?â
Aegon laughed as he began the drive to his familyâs estate. âI think you know.â
âPlease donât tell me youâve fucked someone on this blanket, Aegon.â
âSomeonesâ not just someone. But I keep it clean, no worries!â
The drive to the Targaryen estate was about an hour and a half from town, nestled deep into an expansive forest where there werenât any other homes in at least five miles. It was a gorgeous, Victorian style mansion and according to Daeron, was most certainly haunted. You had been here numerous times, of course, but itâd been a while. As you pulled up in the driveway, you saw Alicent standing outside the door dressed in a gorgeous red and green festive dress, hair curled to perfection. Nothing less was expected of Alicent, though.
âOh, my darling,â Alicent cooed, holding her arms out to caress who she thought of as her fifth child. âItâs been too long, Iâve missed you.âÂ
Your heart warmed under Alicentâs caress, someone who had become more of a mother figure to you than your actual mother. You sniffed, pressing your forehead into Alicentâs shoulder. âMissed you too, mom.âÂ
âCome on, you both can cry inside in the nice toasty house, yeah? Iâm freezing my balls off here, mom.âÂ
Alicent huffed, ushering both of you inside. âDonât be vulgar, sonâ itâs Christmas.â
Helaena and Daeron were already there, as well as Otto, who gave you a stiff nod as a greeting, as was his usual means of communication.
You settled into the kitchen, Alicent pouring everyone apple cider and dishing out at least six types of holiday themed cookies. About an hour after arriving, there was a knock on the door.Â
âOh, that must be Rhaenyra and Laena. Can you answer the door, darling? I need to take the roast out of the oven. Iâm sure they would be happy to see you!âÂ
âMhm!â you mused through bites of cookies. You loved Rhaenyra and Laena, who were technically married with husbands, as was Alicent, but the three of them were in a secret, not so secret to anyone with eyes, polyamorous relationship. It always amused all of their kids when they tried to hide it.Â
You turned the doorknob, fully expecting to see Rhaenyra and Laena. It was not.Â
Aemond.
âFuck.â you blurted out, eyes wide. It had been the better part of a year since you had last seen him. His hair was longer now, gathered into a low bun at the nape of his neck, his cheeks a bit more gaunt. He still wore his earrings and his ringsâ including the one you had given him almost a decade ago.Â
âShit.â he responded, seemingly caught equally off guard by seeing you again. The pupil of his non-prosthetic eye dilated until the iris was almost consumed in black, before he flexed his hand and reeled himself in.Â
You couldnât help but notice he was aloneâ no ânew girlfriendâ as Daeron had put it. âAemond,â you breathed, feeling like you were outside of your own body, your head filled with fluff and static. âMerry⊠Christmas.â
âMerry Christmas.â he responded gruffly, âCan I come in?â
âOhâ yeah, duh,â you chastised yourself, stepping aside to let him in. âSorry.â
âMm.â he grunted in his usual manner. That seemed to be a habit he hadnât dropped.Â
You all but retreated to the kitchen, the expression on your face telling everything. Aegon, Daeron, and Helaena gathered around you.
âI didnât invite him, I swear.â Aegon whispered.
âWell, neither did I!â Daeron professed.
âDonât look at me, I didnât invite him. He left me on read three weeks ago when I sent him a picture of a bug on my windowsill.â Helaena sniffed.
A new voice chimed in. âI invited him,â Alicent spoke, breaking up the little posse, âI told him to come over or he would be grounded for three months.âÂ
All four of you stared at Alicent, deadpanned.Â
âMomâ heâs⊠almost twenty-seven. you canât ground him,â Daeron said, confused. âAnd moreover, why? Wasnât he busy?â
âWell, first off, he is my son, so I wanted to see him for Christmas. Two, I believe we have someone here who has some unresolved issues with him.â Alicent responded, staring right at you pointedly.
â... I donât know⊠I⊠I donât know if I can talk to him. Itâs been too long⊠I feel like I was just getting over all of this.â
âWell, do I have any say in this?â Aemond barged into the circle, his hands in his pockets.Â
You suddenly felt overwhelmed, the familiar bubbling of everything being too much rising in your stomach. You were teleported back to months ago when you were barely alive, trapped in your own mind. âI⊠I need⊠I need a minute.â you muttered, your voice sounding distorted as you made your way to the bathroom, turning on the faucet. Chest heaving, you were already crying, the waterworks starting somewhere between the hallway and the sink.Â
âYouâre always fucking crying, I canât take it anymore.â Aemondâs voice from months and months ago echoed in your head, causing the tears to flow more. You bit against your lip, tasting blood right away as you willed yourself to stop crying.Â
âS-stop⊠stop crying,â you whispered, fingers messing up your hair as you held fistfuls of it. You couldnât catch your composure for the life of you, sliding against the bathroom wall onto the floor.
Vision blurring, you donât know how long you were incoherent for. When you came back to yourself, Aemond was in front of you, crouched down.
âHey,â he murmured softly, the door closed behind him, âItâs okay.â
You swallowed, still numb as he pried your fists from your head, out of your hair, smoothing it down.
âLook at me, can you do that? Nod if you can hear me.â
You nodded slowly, the feeling coming back to your extremities in a sprightly tickling sensation. You blinked tears from your eyes, the liquid smearing your vision.Â
Aemond rasped a thumb over your eyes, effectively clearing the obstruction from your vision. âJust breathe,â he continued to whisper. It was ever reminiscent of when he would calm you down after a nightmare, voice low and scratchy in a way that comforted you. He was so close now, closer than heâd been in forever. He still smelled the same, the scent triggering a deep aching within your chest. A scent that took you forever to get rid of, but you never truly could. âCan⊠we talk?â he asked then, his voice sounding more vulnerable than ever.Â
It felt like whiplash, visions of your previous fights plaguing you, where he had been so closed off, so far away, so distant that you couldnât reach himâ and now, he was here. In the present, in the flesh. In front of you, opened. Not opened completely, but you could see it, like the slit of a cracked door, the light bleeding through. It was there.
â... yeah.â
âI⊠Iâm⊠Iâm sorry. What I did was fucked up. It was fucked up and wrong and you didnât deserve any of it.â
âYouâre right about that,â you muttered, pulling your knees up to your chest, wrapping your arms around them. âI didnât deserve it.âÂ
Aemondâs mouth twitched slightly before he sat down next to you, propping up his legs in a criss-cross. He opened his mouth to speak a few times, before closing it. His hands flexed and unflexed in quick successionâ he was clearly thinking very carefully about his next words. â... Iâve⊠got issues. You know that better than anyone. I donât know what was going through my head those months that we fought. I can hardly remember it now, it was like⊠I was in a fog, a hazeâ I was working myself half to death, I just wanted dad to notice, to fucking⊠appreciate me,â he put his hands on his head, âI was so⊠tied up in this illusion that if I made junior associate at the firm so young that he would congratulate me on my achievement andâŠâ Aemond let out a sigh, âAnd⊠in the process⊠I pushed you away.â
You looked at him, feeling your gaze soften ever so slightly. You knew that his father was a sore spot for him and that trauma ran deep. âYou didnât just push me away, Aemond,â you sighed, reaching out a shaky hand to pry one of his from his face. â... if you wouldâve just talked to me, I couldâve helped. You didnât push⊠you⊠you shoved, you shoved and ran in the other direction.â
His one violet eye danced towards you. âI know. Iâve been kicking myself for it. When Aegon told me you werenât doing well⊠I almost left work to see you.â
â... you did?â
âYeah. Aegon basically told me not toâ that⊠this was something you needed space for. Kind of like I did but⊠maybe in a more healthy way.â
âA text wouldnât have hurt.âÂ
He reached into his pocket and took out his phoneâ his wallpaper was still the same as it was, a picture of you, him and Vhagar very unhappy in an elf costume. He scrolled to his notes app, which was filled with messages addressed to you. â... I thought it might, after what Aegon had said. I was⊠ashamed of how I acted, how I handled the whole thingâ how I left you alone without a word. He told me how you looked⊠dead. I didnât want to make it worse.â
Your eyes scanned the messages, picking out some words. The main ones that caught your gaze were âsorryâ, âloveâ, âregretâ. A huge breath left your lungs, feeling as if everything had been knocked out of you at once. You felt like you were being whipped back and forth in the wind, trying to grab onto anything. If you both werenât so stubborn and just messaged one anotherâ well, no. You did message him, one time. âI thought you blocked me.âÂ
â... for five minutes, maybe.â
âGod, weâre so fucking stupid, Aemond.â
âYou arenâtâ donât say that. Iâm literally a dumbass. All of my siblings told me so, even my own mother, and you know she never curses.â
The tiniest of smiles cracked onto your face as you jostled his shoulder. âYeah⊠you are a dumbass. I am allowed to say it at least once. So, um,â you shuffled slightly, âDaeron kind of let it slip that you had a new girlfriend?â
Aemond pinched his brow. âOf course he said that. He is twenty-one years old and still doesnât know how to use his goddamn ears. I said I was seeing a new therapist, not that I had a fucking girlfriend.â
âA therapist?â
â... things got really dark for me after I moved back into our⊠no, my⊠place. After you officially moved out. It felt lifeless, all of your things were gone, the fucking warmth sucked out of the place. It felt like itâd been sterilized of anything⊠good. I feel into somethingâ I donât know, a depression? I guess, thatâs what Aegon called it. He suggested I see a therapist, citing me as âan emotionally stunted asshole who needs more therapy than himâ.â he exaggerated the last bit with air quotes, rolling his eye.
â... he isnât wrong. I mean, I love your family, but all of you are all kinds of fucked up. Maybe I am too, practically being a part of it.â
Aemond chuckled, giving a tight lipped smile. âWe are fucked up. I realized that⊠I really do not give a shit what my dad thinks, because nothing will ever be good enough for him. Heâs so far gone now that he probably doesnât even know we exist. Iâve come to terms with that and honestly⊠it feels like a weight has been lifted.â
âIâm glad you could⊠work through some of that, Aemond.â you say sincerely, resting your cheek on his arm absentmindedly.Â
â... I want to talk about us.â
â... us. Okay.â
âI donât expect you to want to jump right back into things. It would be unfair to think thatâ but⊠maybe we could try?â
Your chest feels a bit tight at his admissionâ he wanted to try. Every fiber in your being wanted to say yes and jump back into it like youâd never left. But you knew you couldnât. There were still parts of you scarred by this whole experience, some parts that may never heal. It would take a long time and a lot of talks like this to even get some semblance of what the both of you had. âWell⊠before we were together, believe it or not, we were friends. Could we⊠try that for right now?â
His chest visibly deflated a bit, but he nodded. âWhatever you need, okay?â
â
The days following Christmas, leading up to New Yearâs were⊠different. You and Aemond were back in contact, going out for coffee and lunch a few times.
On the day before New Yearâs eve, you texted him.
Turns out, timing the movie to sync with 12 am on New Yearâs day to Toby Maguire saying âPizza timeâ was difficult. Well, it wasnât difficult for normal peopleâ but you and Aemond were a bit tipsy, as Aegon had left some hard apple ciders in your fridge, to which you both indulged.
âOkay, okay,â Aemond stared at his phone, â5⊠4⊠2⊠wait, no, fuck, 3⊠2⊠I think we fucked it upâ just go, go!â
Quickly, you started the movie. âMaybe we shouldâve practicedâ can we start over?â you plopped on the couch, sinking into the sofa and taking a swig of the cider.
âDoesnât work like that, sweetheart. Canât turn back time.â he mused softly, squatting down on one of the mushroom stools. âPretty comfy.â
âAegon picked those out, nifty, huh?â
âNifty.â he parroted.Â
The movie continued on, but as it went on, there was an unspoken tension growing. Aemond hadnât sat on the couch, but rather, the stools that were on the other side of the room. It felt like a chasm had formed, the strain almost palpable.Â
You chewed on your lip anxiously, contemplating whether or not to say anything. But, you had both been trying a new technique called âcommunicationâ â a pretty cool and helpful thing that Aemondâs therapist had taught him. You remember laughing when he posed it that same wayâ but it was extremely important. You cleared your throat. âWhy are you sitting all the way over there?â
â... um. I wanted to try the mushroom seats, I guess.â
âYou donât want to sit next to me?â you countered, feeling especially brave.Â
âIs that⊠alright?âÂ
âUm, duh. I invited you over for pizza and a movie so we could⊠sit together. Not for you to be half a mile away sitting on a mushroom.â
âAs long as itâs alright with you.â he murmured, sitting up from the mushroom stool and making his way over to you, sliding onto the couch, still a few feet away from you.
You werenât sure if it was the atmosphere, the pent up emotions, the small buzz of alcohol, or a destructive cocktail of all three, but you inched closer to him. Closer, closer⊠until your thighs were touching. You glanced up at him beneath fettered lashes. âHi.â
âHey.â he responded, his voice low and warm. It caused a balmy and comforting vibration to go through you, reverberating in your chest.Â
You became all too aware of your movements, your closeness to him, the skin of your thigh grazing against his jeans as you got as close as you could. Your lips parted slightly as he stared back down at you. âCan⊠we?â
âCan we, what?â he murmured, lacing his fingers through your loose hair, gently grasping it at the nape of your neck. âUse your words, sweetheart.â
â... kiss. A little bit.â
âJust a little bit?âÂ
âMhm. A teeny bit.â you leaned up, Aemond meeting you halfway as your lips came together. The culmination of your year apart, all of the emotions, the sadness, the frustration and anger, the passion, love, tearsâ all of it came together at this moment as the two of you melded together perfectly, as if youâd never left. You couldnât help but let out a sigh of contentment, followed by what could only be articulated as a moan.Â
It caught both of you off guard, Aemond pulling away for a moment, his lips still ghosting over yours. âFucking hell,â he breathed against your skin, sending goosebumps tingling from your tailbone up to the nape of your neck, the hairs on your body standing on end. âIâve missed you.â
âIâve missed you,â you responded before latching onto him once more. It started off loving and slow, your lips moving against one another like two old lovers dancing togetherâ then it began to heat up, your mouth parting to accommodate his tongue, gnashing against yours as their dance turned up a notch. Your hands roamed his body, everything you committed to memory for so many years still in its same spot. It felt good, it felt like home. âPlease, Aemondâ I⊠I need you. Itâs been so long⊠too longâŠâ
âToo long since Iâve had you, had this,â his hand reached down, cupping your mound still hidden beneath your panties. Somehow, you foresaw this moment before it happened and thankfully wore a light dress. âLet me in, love.â
You parted your legs, feeling the ever familiar crook of his fingers slide down the front of your panties, testing the waters. The pad of his thumb and middle finger locked on instantly to your clit, swirling the sensitive bud, sending electric shocks through your extremities. You bit your lip to stifle a moan, pressing your forehead against his. âNeed you inside, now.â you all but growled as you peppered little kisses along the soft flesh of his neck.
He wouldnât keep you waiting long, as it seemed he needed this as much as you did. He parted your panties to the side, propping you on top of him and sliding you down his length, earning a hissed gasp from both of you. It took all of his strength not to burst in you right then, as you enveloped him in your tight, wet heat. âYou were made for me,â he breathed, biting down on your shoulder, leaving red marks. One of his favorite things to do was to mark you, leaving hickies in his wake as he worshiped every inch of exposed skin he could reach. âMelded so perfectly, just for me.â he grabbed the flesh of your bottom, squeezing gently at first, then landing a smack on it as he began to thrust up into you.
You nodded fervently, hiccuping little moans as you dug your face into his shoulder, biting him in turn. Your nails sunk into his skin, indenting against his spine as they always had, as they always were meant to. It felt much like a pianist resting their fingers on the ivories after a long break, the pads of your fingers sinking into the ridges of his very being. You were meant to be here, he was meant to be here. You could feel your end coming on all too soon, his cock filling every nook and cranny of you, bullying that spongy, delicate sweet spot just right. You began to clench, your tell-tale sign to him that you were close.Â
âI love you,â he whispered, panting slightly, using one hand to push your face back so you could meet his gaze. His wild, pupil-blown out gaze, cheeks reddened, mouth parted, brow furrowed. âI love you, I fucking love you. I missed youâ fuck.â
âI l-love you,â you responded before he parted your lips with his thumb, âLove you so muchâ p-please, sâclose.â you whined into his mouth.
âLet go, sweetheart, câmon,â he grinned against your lips, nipping and biting at them. âCome for me.â
That was all you needed, the twine of your climax coming undone right in your core, snapping like a taut thread. Your usual habit was to hide your face in his shoulder when you came, whimpering and pantingâ but he didnât let you this time. He held your face, staring at you intently as if you were a piece of fine art on display, and he was a connoisseur.Â
You clenched around him tightly, spurring him to his own end. His hard wrought fingers gripped your ass like it was a lifeline, grunting as he found his release deep within you, where it was always meant to be.Â
Coming down from your high, you slumped against his chest, mouth parted. Embarrassingly enough, a little drool wetted your lips. You were fully and thoroughly fucked out, not even registering that Tobey Maguire said âPizza time!â
âHappy New Year, love,â Aemond murmured against your hair, nestling you tightly against him. He didnât pull outâ he preferred it this way, having you warm him through until you both fell asleep.Â
â... Happy New Year,â you whispered back.
â
Two and a half months later, it was Valentine's day. You and Aemond were officially dating again as of January 2nd, much to the surprise of no one.Â
You both took things as slow as you could, keeping separate apartments for the time beingâ but youâd given him a key to your place about two weeks in, and he was there all the time, taking much needed leave from work.Â
Unlocking the door to your apartment, you walked in, seeing Aemond lounging on the couch with a scruffy brown furball on him.Â
âOh, Vhagar! You brought my baby,â you mused, dropping your items (with some grace, so as not to scare the geriatric cat), walking over, âOh, I hope she remembers me.â you frowned, kneeling down and offering your hand to her.
âOf course sheâll remember, she yelled at me for a good three months at Aegonâs when we were without you.â
Vhagar sniffed your hand for a good minute before blinking her sleepy, lazy eyes at you, then promptly rubbing her scraggly cheek fur on your hand. You were elated, scratching her cheeks, hearing the tinkling of a little bell.Â
âA new collar?âÂ
âMhm, take a look.â
You swirled the collar around, looking for the name tagâ only to find⊠a ring. An opal and moonstone ring. Your heart stopped in your chest as you stared at Aemond.
âI would get down on one kneeâ I was intending on you coming home and Vhagar running to you and then you finding it⊠but sheâs on me, and I canât get up. Cat rules,â he mused, unclipping the collar from her neck and slipping the ring onto your finger. âI know weâve only been dating for⊠a month and a half, so stop me if itâs too soon.â he grinned, his toothy smile.
Vhagar gave a croaking meow, promptly jumping off of Aemondâs lap. As soon as the old cat was off, you threw yourself at Aemond, blubbering. âThis⊠thisâŠâ you sniffed, unable to form words.
âJust so there isnât any confusion⊠will you marry me?â he asked, wiping your tears away with his thumb.
âYes, yesâ I will,â you sniffle, burying your face in his chest and sobbing.Â
He let you sob on him, getting his shirt all snotty and wet, all while smiling.Â
After crying for at least ten minutes, you manage to take a picture, sending it to the group chat, with the caption: âI think we should add him to the chat now, guys.â
Ding.
âIs this group chat named âAemond sucksâ?âÂ
Do you think Matt would make a good dad?
THIS IS AN INTERESTING THOUGHT.
Ok, so.
On the one hand, I think a baby would be a special kind of hell for Matt. The smells. The chaotic sleep schedule. The heavy care needs when Matt is already busy as fuck between the law firm and Deviling. The sounds, oh god, the sounds. Babies crying are designed to be impossible to ignore, to hit a specific pitch that sets off every alarm bell in your head. With Matt's senses, that'd be absolute nightmare. Even happy screams are going to hit those poor eardrums of his like a gunshot. And on the emotional side, Matt's got... a lot of self-loathing and trauma he'd struggle with, along with a heaping dose of fear that his very touch might taint his child with the same darkness he struggles with every night on the streets. As a result, I don't think he would think he'd be a good father.
However.
That last bit is why I think, if he did wind up with a kid, he really would be pretty good at it. Why? Because he'd try. He'd fucking try with everything in him, and he'd do whatever it took to make it work. He's not going to run and abandon you and his kid, he's not going to tap out when things get hard (and they will), and he's not going to be a dad that says he's 'babysitting' while you're gone. When he's able to be there, he's in, 100%. He's no stranger to walking laps around the apartment at night with his baby held against his chest, the child dozing as he sings hymns or practices his opening statements, because sometimes the low, rumbling sound of his voice beneath their head seems to be the only thing that allows his child to sleep. He never hesitates to change a diaper or do the feedings. He's the dad who reads all the books with you during the pregnancy, the dad who goes with you to the parenting classes, and seeks out advice from various folks in the Nelson clan (along with Foggy who, due to being born into a massive family encompassing no less than 628 family members at last count, can give a fairly thorough lecture on the mechanics of baby care. Foggy also ensures the child is inducted into the Clan upon their birth so that the Clan can give Matt and you a break when needed).
He'll move heaven and earth to avoid fucking things up, to avoid letting Stick's abusive voice and influence come slithering out of his mouth. There will be no cruel comments about 'the devil in you' when the child is angry, not like what Matt heard from his own grandma. That stops with him, even if he has to build the dam himself by hand. His child will have all the support Matt wishes he had.
Despite his best efforts, he does make mistakes. It's true, and unavoidable, which you'd have to remind him of regularly - 'Parents are mortal, Matt.' There are moments he would miss due to being so busy, moments - especially early on - where the noise or sensory input would become too much and he'd have to retreat just a little. He'd beat himself up for it every single time, and he'd have to work through that too, this reminder that no matter how hard he tries, he'll never be perfect.
But overall, just like with Jack, any child of Matt's would grow up knowing that they're loved from start to finish, and there'd be nothing they could do that would ever change that.
âĄ/â- It's Been A While [ II ]
âĄ/â- It's Been A While Masterlist
You sighed as you placed the textbook you were reading back down on your desk your students rushed out of your class. The last bell of the day had rung, and it also seemed like the deadline for your answer to the question Shouta had asked you prior.
His words still rang in your head, you kept both of your hands over the sides of your head, thinking. There was no way you could reject his offer, but there was also no way you could accept it either. Luck was barely on your side knowing that whoever broke into your apartment didn't know your schedule had changed, you couldn't put others in danger.
If anything considered from the heads up your boss had given you last night, whoever or whatever they were must have been after you for two reasons: your status within the embassy, or your quirk. The second reason made much more sense to you however, because if they had wanted you for your title, they would've come to see you much sooner.
Now was a horrible time to even think about or do such a thing, especially since you had to drug yourself up over prescribed medications to even keep your powers and emotions at bay. It's easy for someone to use you for your powers rather than status, honestly that's what you liked so much about the embassy, you barely had to use your quirk.
No one even knew about your quick use of medications to keep yourself at a low after so many losses from your powers. Each time you convinced yourself they were accidents, and honestly, they were, but the number of nightmares you had about the occurrences said otherwise.
Now with everything hitting you all at once you had the option to move in somewhere secure, somewhere safe. You knew Shouta and you knew he was someone who could take care of you, and himself. He was a pro hero for fucks sake, one of the best at that, it can't be as dangerous as you think if you were to accept his offer.
Maybe it'll be a good thing, maybe just maybe this is one of the only opportunities I'll have at being happy or seeing things on the bright side after having such a shit week. Plus, you didn't have to keep paying in cash to stay longer than you intended at the hotel you were planning to stay in.
You stood up from your seat, collecting your belongings from your desk and placing them in your work bag. Determined to find Shouta to speak with him about his offer, unexpectedly you hear a knock coming from your opened doorway to find him standing there.
"Hey" you said softly, glancing back at your desk and grabbing your phone, seeing you had a message. You only turned it off, thinking to yourself you'd answer it later as you placed it in your pocket.
"Hey, I was just stopping by to see if you made up your mind about my offer, it still stands." He replied, his voice heavy as he watched your movements, both of his hands now in his pockets. You looked back at him, now taking him in fully.
He had gotten a lot taller from when you two were this close, of course that was back in high school before you had left. If anything, if you had gotten closer to him, he might as well have towered over you. You only smiled at him and nodded as you threw your bag over your shoulder, placing your hands in your pockets as well.
"I was actually just on my way to go see you about that actually." You began, scanning his face for any reaction from the first half of your statement, only to see nothing but him nodding. "I accept your offer, but I'm not sure I'll be able to thank you enough for it, I have a lot to bring though." You stated, placing a hand out of your pocket and pointing behind you with a smile.
You said softly, you weren't sure if it was the bandages pressed against his collarbone and lower chin that made him put his head down, but you could've sworn he was smiling just now. He'd do that all the time since you two were children, hiding whenever he smiled or laughed, it's good to see that most things haven't changed.
It's almost funny really, how just a few days ago he seemed like he hated you. Was doing everything to avoid you or even speak to you, acting like the grinch almost, and here he was now, with you, smiling because you accepted his offer to move in with him temporarily.
"If it's your bags being too heavy, I can always help you with them and anything else you're bringing. I have plenty of space so you can put your things where you want." He spoke softly, now taking a step towards you, if you were to even move back you would've hit your desk.
You stood your ground and eyed him as he made his way towards you, you only nodded in response. Now gripping on tightly to the bag that weighed down on your shoulder. Your eyes met with Shouta's constantly within seconds, the tension between the two of you becoming thicker with each glance, as you stepped around him to leave you paused.
"If you send me the address to your place I'll stop by later tonight with my things, I need to pack." You said, not even turning to look at him. You needed to get out of that room, and it had to be quick, whatever it was he saw in you to look at you the way you did made you scream internally.
"I don't think I have your new number..." he said as he turned around and watched your state, it's almost as if you could feel him raise a brow, but you didn't dare to turn around and look him in the eyes again.
"My number never changed" you said simply, now turning to the left as your heels clicked. You made your way down the hallway towards the exit and into the parking lot, digging in your pocket to get your car keys. The entire moment the two of you just shared replaying in your head over and over without fail.
As you unlocked your car and took your bag off your shoulder you chewed on your bottom lip. Tossing your bag in the passenger's seat as you sat in the driver's seat, gripping onto the steering wheel for dear life.
This was going to be much more complicated than you expected.
ౚà§âËïœĄâౚà§âËïœĄâౚà§âËïœĄ
You scratched your head as you looked at the way you placed your bags within the trunk of your car. It looked so disorganized, but frankly you were too tired to fix them any better, the car ride would've been bumpy regardless, so it didn't matter too much. Just as you were going to close your trunk, your phone vibrated.
You reached in the back pocket of your jeans and pulled it out, seeing a message from Shouta and the person who had messaged you earlier in the afternoon. You closed your trunk and made your way to the driver's seat, locking your car as you sat in the parking lot of the hotel you stayed the night at. Now unlocking your phone and going to messages you saw the message underneath Shouta's from an unknown number, you rose a brow before opening it.
[XXX-XXX-XXXX: I won't let you forget about what you've done to our family]
You felt a twist in your stomach as you read it, already knowing who it was from, one of your old 'accidents' that occurred right after high school. The one that caused you the most grief and nightmares from the tragedy, and the same one that made you quickly cut the deal from being a pro-hero and working full time for the embassy.
Without a second thought you quickly blocked the number, sucking your teeth as you slumped into the seat, tears forming in the corners of your eyes. You quickly swallowed your emotions as you remembered you hadn't answered Shouta's texts, quickly opening it and reading his message.
[Shouta :) : Hey, here's the address XXXX Main St, XXXX ****. Be safe on your trip here, I'll be waiting outside to help with your bags]
You smiled at his text, looking in your rearview mirror at the bags piled up in the trunk. You shook your head and chuckled softly, only hearting his message and pressing on the address that was underlined. It took you straight to the maps app and you followed your GPS to his place, as you followed it you played music from your favorite playlist on the way.
As you got closer and closer to the destination of his place you began to think how it would be. Was it just a two-bedroom apartment or was it something large and cozy like your own apartment. It must depend on the salary he's getting as both a pro hero and as a teacher, in all honesty you had no idea.
He didn't seem like a huge person on decorations or huge flashy things, so you didn't expect much, but when you drove through in the neighborhood you weren't expecting to see such a nice grey tone looking house. When your GPS told you that this was your destination you blinked out of confusion, looking back at the numbers on the house then your phone.
It wasn't wrong, this was definitely your destination, you just weren't expecting all of this. You shook away your thoughts and pulled into the driveway before seeing the garage open as you shut off the car after parking it. As you opened your car door the garage opened fully, revealing Shouta.
Honestly if you hadn't been paying attention you wouldn't have suspected it was him, he looked entirely different than he did a few hours ago. He was built, and you meant it, he was wearing all black, black sweatpants and a black wifebeater. His hair was pulled back into a low ponytail as he kept one hand in his pocket, raising the other one to wave at you.
Thank goodness he did wave at you, because it snapped you out of the little trance you were having of him. There's no way he was hiding all of that in the outfit he wore on the daily with his students and at night on his patrols. As you waved back at him and closed your door to make your way to your trunk you still couldn't wrap your head around it all.
Lost deep in thought you weren't even aware that when you opened your trunk, he was already making his way right behind you. Before you could reach for the first bag in the back his hand grazed yours as he picked it up, then picked up another and threw it over his shoulder.
Your head sunk down slowly as your breath hitched, not wanting to make this more awkward than it already was. You slowly made your way to the side and picked up two much smaller bags and turned to him as he cocked his head to the side, pointing to the house.
"Just follow me and I'll show you where your room is" he said, looking at you, you looked back to the car with a nod quickly. There was no way in hell you two were about to start yet another staring contest, especially now of all times.
As you followed him inside you got a nice view of the house, well the inside anyway, everything was nice and clean. It was honestly pretty bland inside, no sheer pop of color or decors, just furniture that was a sort of marble grey. Anything you could look at or pay attention too other than the handsome sculpted man in front of you would've sufficed.
As you walked down the hallway, you heard him speaking of you having the room entirely to yourself, and the bathroom was just to the side of it. You only hummed in response to his statement as your mind continued to wander, until a sudden question popped up in your head.
"Why are you being so nice to me all of a sudden?" You asked, your question quickly followed by a yawn, to which you covered your mouth with the back of your hand. Shouta placed your bags down in your new room, it was big to say the least, neat and empty. The bed sheets were a tan kind of color, sand almost, along with a cream-colored blanket.
"What do you mean?" He asked, now turning to you and raising a brow as you placed your bags down on your bed, looking around the room to see where you'd place most of your belongings. You looked up at him, taking a glance at his face before walking over to the dresser that was in front of your bed.
"When we first bumped into each other you looked at me like you hated me, now we're here." You said carelessly, looking at your reflection in the mirror as you toyed with your hair for a little, looking over to see him in the mirror as he crossed his arms.
"I've never hated you" he said honestly, you now turned to look at him, in the eyes this time. Seeing the same look he had before, a look of sadness and sorrow. You only hummed in response yet again before opening the empty drawers to your dresser and looking inside them all, planning which draw would hold what.
You only left the room in one swift movement and made your way back to your car and grabbing your last two bags along with your work bag. You closed the trunk as you locked the car and began walking back inside.
Whatever answer he just gave you when you were inside didnât answer your question, you hated how he always beat around the bush. Now you were too tired to argue or pry to get an answer that you wanted from him, you only returned inside through the garage to see him standing in the hallway waiting for you. Without exchanging any words, he just came over to you, taking the bags from your hands in one swift movement and walked into your room, placing them with the others.
âThank youâ you said, removing your phone and keys from your pockets and placing them on your nightstand by your bed. Shouta only shook his head at your words.
âNo need to thank me, follow me so I can show you aroundâ He spoke, now exiting your room and pointing down the hall for you to follow him. You followed behind slowly, turning your gaze back to the walls and floors now, not wanting to look at him knowing how easily your mind wanders.
You wondered how he felt about you, honestly it couldnât be anything bad, he had offered for you to live in his house after hearing of your problems. Even though things ended rocky between the two of you and started again off to a strange start here you were, pushing everything to the side as he gave you a personal house tour.
You couldnât even call this fate, as of right now you had no idea what it was, but whatever it was made you more curious than ever. As the small tour came to an end Shouta had shown you practically everything. The kitchen, living room, his bedroom and your bathroom, it wasnât a lot, but it could be, his home was spacious, and you liked that.
He had even cooked apparently, and you complimented it too. His food was good and honestly you were surprised when he first told you, not expecting him to be the cooking type. Soon after you helped him clean up and stood around as you watched him.
Not to mention to your surprise you felt something pet against the heel of your feet, startling you as you quickly turned around. You were met with a small black cat, meowing at you softly before repeating the same action as before. You only smiled and relaxed, bending over to pet it, your back now facing Shouta.
You grinned as you called it pet names as you continued to pet it before picking it up and reading the collar. âYoyoâ you read and laughed, knowing there was no way Shouta couldâve named her.
âThis was definitely Nemuriâs doing, I think youâre more creative than this.â You laughed turning to Shouta, who was dangerously close to you. Your arm had brushed up against his chest and you knew better than to move. You only turned all of your attention back to Yoyo, as if you hadnât realized what happened.
âYeah, it was, I wasnât sure what to name her, but I had helpâ he replied, placing his hand on the back of his neck and holding it gently as he sighed. You gave Yoyo a small kiss and hug before placing her down back on the floor and standing up again.
Without thinking you turned around and face planted into Shoutaâs side, immediately pulling back and apologizing as you held your head. He only shook his head and apologized as well, placing a hand on your shoulder asking if you were alright. You only nodded and drew your shoulder back, feeling dizzy at the feeling.
He smelled good, too good, like one of those really nice colognes that would catch your attention whenever you went shopping and passed by the menâs section. You were snapped out of your trance when it seemed for a split second someone was standing behind him.
You immediately darted your head to the side, only to see the figure disappear as you frowned. You just brushed it off and turned into the kitchen, checking the time. As you counted how many weeks it had been in your head.
8:36pm
You were late to take one of your medications, your alarm had probably been going off for a while now and you werenât even aware of it. Thankfully you had already eaten so you didnât have to worry about taking it on an empty stomach.
âI have to go, Iâll uh, Iâll be backâ you said with a pause, quickly turning around and making your way back to your room. You quickly shut off the silent alarm that had been ringing on your phone for nearly an hour before grabbing your keys and heading outside.
As you unlocked your car and climbed into the passenger seat to open the glove department you saw a shadow in the rear-view mirror. You turned around slowly only for the figure to yet again disintegrate from your view. You took a deep breath and searched for the bottle you were looking for amongst the junk in the department box, ending your search when you found a bottle labeled âRisperdalâ.
As you cleaned up and closed your glove department box and locked your car you quickly walked back inside. The figure appearing beside you yet again, muttering whispers to you as you ignored it and made your way back to your room digging in your bag.
Your pill cutter where is your pill cutter. Youâre prescribed to only take half of the full number of milligrams the pill had and unfortunately you had already taken the other left over half 3 weeks ago. It was surprising to you almost, you had never taken them so close together before, things like these were only monthly occurrences, but it was getting worse.
You sighed to yourself out of frustration as you couldnât find what you were looking for, your grip on your bottle tightening as the faceless figure taunted you, practically laughing at you through a mouth it had grown out of nowhere.
You made your way back to the kitchen, embarrassment hitting you as you realized you had one of two options. Either hoping Shouta had a pill cutter around somewhere or using a knife to cut it yourself.
He raised his head as he looked up at you after drying his hands when he finished the dishes. Smiling at you softly before seeing something in your hands and raising a brow as you wet your lips and parted them.
âHey um, do you have any pill cutters?â You asked quietly, but loud enough for him to hear, he slowly made his way over to you. He opened the cabinet beside your head filled with medications, as he reached to the top shelf and got a green pill cutter and placed it on the counter.
He then made his way over to his fridge and got a cold-water bottle, placing it next to the cutter. The entire time he kept his eyes on you, only that you werenât looking at him, more or less something behind or around him had your attention.
Your eyes trailed on the figure that now morphed into a teenage girl, one who you had known well in high school. She went around and teased you laughing at Shouta as she grinned at you sinisterly as she spoke, you couldnât hear what she was saying as it all came out as whispers. You knew it wasn't her though, the way her body was so deformed, and her face was twisted proved it was all in your head.
You then looked over to the pill cutter, placing the pill bottle in your hand on the counter before opening it quickly. Then opening the water bottle, shaking slightly as you did so before placing a pill within the tiny machine on the counter.
The girl had now made her way over to you as you placed the device in your hand, clamping your hands down on the button attempting to cut the pill. The more and more she whispered to you and placed her hands on your shoulders the more you trembled, your vision clouded with tears as you chewed on your bottom lip.
Within seconds you felt two large hands overcoming your own, and a firm chest being pressed against your back as you heard a click from the pill cutter. You gasped softly as you were snapped out of your trance for a short while as Shouta took the pill cutter from your hands.
He soon opened the device and took the left half of the pill with one hand, his other one rested on your shoulder. There was absolute silence between the two of you, the only thing making noise was you, your breathing was ragged. He paused as he read the label of your pill bottle, frowning softly before turning his attention back to you.
âCan I trust you to take it yourself or do you need my help?â He asked softly, his body still pressed against yours, you only shook your head in response. You only kept your head down and turned around slightly, the whispers of before echoing in your mind.
Shouta hadnât said anything else, he only lifted your head slightly, his hand grabbing your jaw softly as he looked at you. Itâs as if you werenât even there with him, looking over the side of his shoulder, your mouth still agape. You watched as the deformation of the girl disappeared, her laughter leaving a trail behind.
He took the pill and placed it at your lips, his fingers brushing against your lips focused your attention on him, your eyes now locked with his. You parted your lips even more now, letting the cut pill go past your lips and hit your tongue, the taste bitter as your eyes never left his.
Your eyes were watery was his first thought, the same way they always were whenever you were about to cry. For as long as he knew you it had been that way, youâd squint slightly before letting your eyes water and cry, and he hated it.
He hated how conceited you were, especially with him, and now it hadnât seemed like things had changed much. Even now, years later you were taking on way much more than you could chew, and he always blamed the embassy for it.
The two of you broke eye contact as you were the first to turn around, placing a hand on his chest to push him away softly so you could reach for the water bottle he had gotten you before. You quickly chugged the bottle two thirds of the way down, the bitter taste still in your mouth as you placed the bottle down.
The hand you had on Shoutaâs chest hadnât left, he grabbed it softly, tugging you towards him as you turned around again. You looked at his face, hinted with disappointment and possibly anger as he saw your gaze.
âY/n. Risperdal? What has happened since you joined the embassy?â He said, now bending slightly to reach your eye level, his hands not leaving your arms. You had heard him, but his words werenât as loud as the whispers that were still echoing in your head before you spoke.
âIâm fine, I took it too lateâ you replied slightly, ready to push him off of you, but his grip only tightened, pulling you in closer. Youâre too close to one another, way too close. You weren't sure if your thumping heartbeat was getting louder from the way he held you or the sounds ringing in your mind, but you didn't like it.
Even through the haze of what youâre going through you can tell that this was wrong, even though it felt good, and it made you feel warm inside. You shook your head and pushed him off of you successfully this time as he left you go.
âI said Iâm fine.â You repeated harshly, glaring at him as you watched his sad expression quickly turn angry, glaring back at you in return. Your hand clammy as you squeezed it open and closed again. There was no need for him to care so closely to you as he had before, you two weren't together anymore.
âYouâre still a shitty liar, I guess you havenât changed since when you left.â He responded harshly, you looked to the side and thought back to when you left initially years back. Your expression softening as you took a breath and stopped clamming with your hand.
You only excused yourself and bid yourself goodnight, practically speed walking back your room before slamming the door behind you. Taking all preparations and moving your bags to the side as you got ready for bed, laying underneath the covers with your earphones in listening to your music as you tried to tune out your thoughts before drifting to sleep.
Maybe you were right about putting Shouta in danger by living here, but the danger wasnât from the outside or whoever was after you.
The danger was you.
09: LET ME TAKE CARE OF YOU
"i still haven't figured out how to sit across from you, and not be madly in love with everything you do." †william c. hannon
Three years ago, Nima tried to convince you to go skydiving with her. She begged and she pleaded, but you told her ânoâ on account of thinking she was a crazy person for wanting to jump out of a perfectly good plane. Which was hilarious now considering you were sitting beside Joel wanting to pull open the door and dive out. The irony was not lost on you.
The only reason you hadnât gone scrambling for the door was because Joel was forced to take a work call a few minutes into the flight. He hadnât moved away. Joel stayed right next to you with his arm behind you as he spoke, and every few moments heâd glance at you with a silent apology and shake his head. Youâd reply with a tight lipped smile and go back to mindlessly scrolling through instagram.Â
Unfortunately the mindlessly scrolling was not so mindless. Since leaving Vegas, you had a high pitch ringing in the back of your mind like an endless, echoing siren. Married. A married man. Joel was†Your teeth were clenched together so hard you wondered if Joel could hear them grinding against one another. Yesterday had been filled with so much anxiety, and you had managed to work through it by the end of the night. Mostly. But this was worse. This was so much worse.Â
Married?
Your throat suddenly felt tight, eyes stinging with unshed tears, and you hastily undid your seatbelt and stood. Joel glanced your way and you pointed to the back of the plane and mouthed the word âbathroomâ to him. He nodded with a soft smile, and you spun on your heel and practically sprinted to the tiny plane bathroom. You struggled to get the folding door shut and the stewardess who sat not far away stared at you in confusion. You gave her an awkward wave and finally got it latched.Â
âFuck.â You shoved your face in your hands, leaning against the wall, and held back your tears. You were confused and frustrated, and you couldnât even find relief in a good cry because Joel would spot it in a heartbeat no matter how much you tried to put yourself back together. The thought of confronting him about this right now was your worst nightmare. You hadnât had the time to process any of the wild thoughts pinging around your head yet.
Your mind was at war with itself. On one hand, maybe you were being stupid and naive. For the last month and a half youâve spent nearly every day with Joel and on the days you werenât actively seeing him the two of you would talk either over a call or through text. You knew Yo-yo for 24 hours. Sure, she seemed nice and sincere, but what if Rosalind sent her to screw with you? For all you knew, Yo-yo had cruel intentions and was trying to drive a wedge between you and Joel. By taking her word youâd be playing right into that trap. What she said about the other sugar baby and about Joel being married? Maybe it was all fake and youâve been stressing for no reason.
On the other hand, Joel didnât kiss you. He didnât kiss you because he wanted to âdo right by youâ. Joel asked for time. Was it because he needed to get a divorce? Worse. Was he married with absolutely no plans to get divorced and just buying time for something else?Â
God, if you kept up this line of thought you were gonna vomit. Quickly, you turned to the sink to splash a little cold water on your face in hopes it would help you get your shit together for the next thirty minutes. Half an hour and youâd be on the ground. But then what? It would be a miracle if you kept it together for thirty minutes let alone any longer.Â
You took in a long, slow breath and tried to clear your mind. When you felt steady enough, you stepped out of the bathroom. As tempting as it was to hide in there for the rest of the flight, it would probably be a red flag for Joel that something was wrong. You wandered back over to Joel and at your approach, and at the sight of you, he covered the bottom of his phone and whispered, âYou alright?â
âMhmm.â You nodded quickly and sat back down.
âIâm sorry. Jusâ another minute.âÂ
You waved your hands at him as nonchalantly as you could and he went back to his call. You leaned back in the seat, phone in hand, and Joel readjusted his arm on the back of the seat so he could settle his hand on your shoulder. As he always did, his thumb was tracing circles on your shoulder. An action you always loved, but now an intrusive thought slammed into you†does he do this with his wife? The question was so startling, so sickening, that you couldnât bite back the nausea that rolled through your body. You jumped up so fast you nearly stumbled over your feet, and you scrambled for the bathroom.Â
Vaguely, you heard your name behind you, but you didnât stop until you reached the toilet. You fell to your knees and threw up. The taste of acid in your mouth made you wince, but getting it all up did bring some relief. That relief was short lived though as you felt a large, warm hand settle on your back.
âJesus, sugar.â He said in a soothing voice as he rubbed your back. âWhatâs goinâ on? Have you felt sick all morninâ?â
You spat into the toilet bowl, trying to get the taste of bile out of your mouth, before reaching out and flushing the toilet. You tried to stand, and Joel hooked his arm around you to help you up. He called out of the bathroom and a second later the stewardess brought in a cup of water and a ginger ale. Joel handed you the water and kept his hand rubbing up and down on your back.
âIâm†Iâm fine.â You shook your head and took a sip of water to swish and spit into the sink. âReally.â
âObviously not.â Joel replied. âCâmon, letâs sit you down.â
âJoelâŠâ You tried to argue, but he wasnât hearing it. He kept an arm around you as he carefully led you back to the seat. He brought the bottle of ginger ale with you and the moment you finished the water he took the cup out of your hand to replace it with the soda. âI feel better now. Itâs fine.â
âYouâve been off this mornin'. I was worried.â Joel lifted a hand to feel your forehead. It made sense that Joel picked up on your distress. He had always been so good at reading you. âYou seemed fine when we first woke up. When exactly did you start feelin' sick?â
You took a sip of the ginger ale, âIâŠI donât know. After breakfast maybe.â You lied. The sincerity in his eyes, the concern in his voice, it was both bringing you comfort and making you sick again all at once. You felt so stupid. Either you were freaking out over a lie a woman you barely knew told you or you were being tricked into feelings by a married man. Either way, you felt pathetic. âYour, um, your work call, Joel.â
Joel shook his head in response and didnât even bother addressing the work call he stopped. He set a hand on the back of your neck and his thumb was lightly ghosting over your skin. You closed your eyes and took a slow breath in and out through your nose. âTell me what I can do, sugar.â
âIâ€â You swallowed the lump in your throat. You forced your eyes open, finding Joelâs furrowed brow and worried gaze already on you, and it made you want to cry. You shook your head, âI, um, I think I just wanna lay down for a while. If thatâs okay.â
âCourse itâs okay.â He replied.Â
The seat the two of you were sharing wasnât long enough for you to lay down without laying your head on Joelâs lap. You planned on moving to the other couch seats to lay down, but Joelâs hand was still on the back of your neck and he lightly began to guide you down. Too tired to even try and move, you settled your head on his thigh and curled your body up onto the rest of the seat.Â
In any other situation, this would be one of the most comfortable spots on Earth. Your head rested on his thick, firm thigh, and Joelâs hand traced where he could reach. Up and down your jawline and neck†his thumb and forefinger would occasionally massage your earlobe. You tried to calm your racing thoughts. The truth was, you didnât know the truth yet. It was a fact you kept repeating in your head in hopes it would numb the sharp pain of your worst fears, but those intrusive thoughts continued to pummel you.
âIâm so sorry, baby girl.â Joel murmured while his fingers dragged across your skin. âWhat a shitty way to end this weekend.â You hummed in agreement. This really was a shitty way to close out what started as one of the best weekends of your life.
Avoiding Joel made you realize how involved in your life he was. After landing in LA, Joel tried to drag you to a doctor and only conceded when you told him it was probably a 24 hour bug and you just wanted to sleep. He called you later that night to check in on you, and you managed to talk to him for a few minutes before lying about wanting to go to bed early. Come Monday morning, you went to work despite Joel texting you that you should stay home. Trying to focus at work was physically painful. Enough so that after the nightmare Monday had been, you left midway through the day today claiming to Henry that you didnât feel well. It wasnât even a full blown lie. You felt like shit.
Nima threw the folder of papers onto her desk and set her hands on her hips, âIâm gonna hit him with my car.â
âPlease donât.â You mumbled with your chin resting in your palm as you leaned on the other side of her desk. After leaving work, you came directly to Nimaâs office. Going home and sitting on your couch, alone with your thoughts, would only make you ten times more miserable.
âNo, actually, my car isnât big enough. Iâm gonna commandeer a bus and hit him with that.â
âI havenât confirmed anything yet. For all I know, Iâm being this pathetic over nothing.â
Nima snapped her hand up and pointed at you with a glare, âNo. I will not have you shit talking yourself when the only person we should be shit talking is Joel Miller and his wife.â
You groaned and let your head fall to the desk. The words âJoel Miller and his wifeâ made you viscerally ill. The time you spent not talking to Joel Monday night you spent stalking people on social media. You reached dead ends very quickly though since Joel didnât have any social media whatsoever. The easiest solution was to just look Joel in the eyes and ask him for the truth, but you couldnât bring yourself to do it. You wanted to know the truth, but you were scared to actually seek it out.Â
If you asked Joel for the truth, if you confronted him, then heâd give it to you.
What if the truth was something you didnât want to hear?
âAlrighty, babe, real talk.â Nima said and you lifted your head, keeping your chin resting on the wood, and saw she had dropped down into her office chair. To meet your eye line, she held her chin on the desk across from you to mirror your position. âI can threaten and plot his demise all I want, but I know Iâm not allowed to kill him until this is confirmed or denied.â She twisted her lips. âYou deserve the truth.â
You pouted, âHow am I supposed to ask him about this, Nima??â
Her eyebrows furrowed in concern, âIf you did ask⊠How sure are you that heâd answer truthfully?â
You pushed up and leaned back in the chair. That was a good question, and with anyone else it would probably be a real concern. However, you werenât worried about that. You truly, deep down, believed that if you confronted Joel about this he would give you the truth.Â
âI really think he would.â You answered. âIs that naive of me?â
âYou know him better than I do.â
This entire situation made you question that. Did you know him? You knew he grew up in Austin. He had a younger brother, Tommy, and it was just them and his mom for most of his childhood. You knew he attended one year in college when his mom passed away†cancer. Joel dropped out of college to take care of his brother and picked up a job in construction. Thatâs where he got his start. His first boss saw he had a knack for more than just the manual labor and trusted him with more and more until Joel was running sites for the man. At 27, Joelâs girlfriend of three months got pregnant. They planned to make it work, but she left when Sarah was two weeks old. You knew he adopted Ellie three years later. That he earned his bachelorâs degree in business at home through online classes while raising two young girls and working a full time job. That he started Miller Construction shortly after earning that degree, and it blew up from there.
You knew despite being a tough guy, he didnât like horror movies.
You knew his favorite whiskey was Lagavulin†neat.
The one thing you didnât know was if he was married or not.
âI am going to suggest something,â Nima began, âAnd I want you to listen before you call me crazy.â You shot her confused look and she continued on. âI have this cousin.â You groaned and Nima chastised you to listen. It seemed like she had a cousin available for every situation that arose, and half the people she called cousin werenât even technically related to her by blood. Anytime you asked her about it all sheâd say was âKorean momsâ love to talkâ, as if that clarified anything for you. âSeriously. Heâs dating a private eye. With one text, we can get some answers.â
You shook your head, âNima, thatâs insane.â
âIs it?â
âYes, hiring a private investigator is insane.âÂ
âLook, itâll get us reliable answers.â Nima argued. âThe truth.â
You rolled the idea around in your head. It was literally the epitome of paranoid absurdity, but you were wondering if thatâs the point you were at. Would it be better to find out this way? That way when you finally did confront Joel you wouldnât be blind sided by the answer. Hell, if the answer turned out to be âno, he isnât marriedâ then you can chalk up the last few days as time wasted and move on with your life. That being said, it did seem like an invasion of Joelâs privacy.Â
âThat feelsâŠâ You paused, âIllegal?â
âItâs not illegal to hire a PI.â Nima countered then tilted her head. âI think. Iâm not a lawyer, but people do it on TV all the time, right?â
âWell, that logic is foolproof.âÂ
âIâm not gonna do it if you tell me you donât want to do it.â Nima said firmly. She crossed her arms and gave a small little shrug. âBut you have to do something. Either this or just call him right now and tell him the two of you need to talk.â There was a protective sincerity in her eyes that felt like a security blanket being settled on your shoulders. âI donât want to see you get more attached to this guy just to be hurt. I donât want him to lie to you.â
You knew Nima only had your best interests in mind. Technically, Joel had given you no reason not to trust him. Half the time you thought on this topic you convinced yourself you were overreacting and being a pathetic, paranoid mess. Yo-yo, as nice and fun as she had been, was a virtual stranger to you. Her word shouldnât trump Joelâs. You knew all of that, and you wanted to trust him. However, it felt like some broken part of you was looking for something to be wrong. Joel Miller was too good to be true. Why would someone like him be interested in someone like you? There had to be something else going on. According to your ex, you hadnât even been worthy of him and Joel Miller was ten times the man he was.Â
âOkay, do it.â You blurted and hated yourself for doing so.
Nima held your gaze for a second, but you pushed to stand and crossed her office to her private bathroom. You took one of the paper towels, dampening it, and set it on the back of your neck in a poor attempt to ground yourself. For a while longer, you just stood there in front of the sink. Not staring at yourself, but staring forward at a singular spot as your thoughts raced. You needed a positive thought. Just one would do, and you were prepared to drag it out of your thick skull kicking and screaming if necessary.Â
âEverything is going to be okay.â You mumbled to yourself softly.Â
The whispered words did nothing for your anxiety. However, the memory of him did. You found comfort looking back at the soft moments spent with Joel and let yourself fall down that rabbit hole. The temporary peace was nice, but it didn't last. Finding strength you didnât know you had today, you splashed your face one more time and then left the bathroom.
Your eyes immediately landed on Nima who stared back with wide eyes. Nima spoke first, âWhat?â
âWhat?â You repeated. âI didnât say anything.â
âOh, I thought you said something.â Nima flipped her phone over and settled her hand on top of it. You glanced from her face to her phone and back again. A look of misery flickered across her features. You tilted your head in question. âAre you hungry? Iâm hungry.â
âNima.â You crossed the room quickly. âDid they already text back??â
âNo. Yes. Maybe?â Nima shook her head. âNot exactly.â
âNima.â
She twisted her lips and drummed her nails against the plastic case of her phone. You shot her another look and she blew out a sigh. âHe sent me a response, but itâs like half an answer. Half a report. We should wait until he canâ€â
âWhat did he say?â
âApparently, heâs working on a case for someone else right now and had a database right in front of him so all he had to do was type inâ€â
âNima, please.â You blurted. It felt like your heart was caught in your throat. You couldnât breathe and you didn't feel coherent enough to string together a thought. Her hesitance was an answer in and of itself. You rubbed your throat, your other arm wrapping around your torso in a poor attempt to hold yourself together, and gasped. âJust say it.â
âHeâs married, babe.â Nima mumbled. You knew the words had been coming, but they still overwhelmed you. The air left your lungs as if someone had gut punched you and you fell back into the seat in front of her desk. âHe said heâd send me the certificate when he could, but he has to finish this job first. Iâm so sorry. I am so, so sorry. Iâ€â
Nima stopped herself from speaking as she came around her desk and wrapped an arm around your shoulders. You sat in her embrace for as long as your shattering mind could endure and then shook your head, âI need a drink. Drinks. Plural.â
âItâs three in the afternoon, babe.â Nima mumbled in concern. You shot her a dry look and she offered you a tight lipped smile. âDrinks it is! Letâs go. We can go back to my place andâ€â
âNo.â You pushed to stand. âI wanna go out.â
âOh⊠kay. Where?â
âAnywhere.â You turned and began to leave.
Nima was scrambling to gather her belongings into her strawberry shaped purse before rushing out after you. âJust one drink though. I hate being the voice of reason, but we should limit ourselves to one drink.â
One drink turned into two which turned into three which turned into twelve.
By 6 PM, you were borderline wasted. It was by no means the best decision youâve ever made, but you couldnât classify it as your worst considering that, for the first time since leaving Vegas, you didnât feel sad or defeated. No, those blue emotions had turned into a burning shade of red. You had finally found your anger and all it took was copious amounts of alcohol.Â
âI mean, married?â You scoffed as you stood at the bar with Nima at your side. âThatâs†Thatâs illegal.â Nima nodded in agreement as she blindly tried to find the straw in her drink with her tongue. You reached out and pushed it toward her lips. âAnd worse than illegal! Itâs fucking rude.â
âSo rude.â Nima slurped at the last of her drink and all you could hear was the rattling of ice in her glass. She pulled away to slam the cup down and pointed at you†her pink hair had been let down from the braid to messily rest around her shoulders. âYou should get a new sugar daddy!â You stuck your tongue out in disgust and shook your head. âNo! This is such a good idea.â Nima began to look around the bar. âLetâs find you a super hot, super not married sugar daddy.â
âI donât want a new sugar daddy. I want another drink.â You leaned on the bar and waited for the bartender to look your way. Nima and you had bounced to a few bars. The two of you, back when you were sober, decided to start drinking in an area that had multiple bars all within walking distance. The one you were in now wasnât familiar to you†it wasnât a place you and Nima had been to before. It was a bit too upscale for your liking. Sober you would not have been a fan. Drunk you? Loving it.
Nima was tapping on your shoulder rapidly and when you looked her way she was pointing across the bar to God knows who. âHe looks like he wouldnât marry someone without your permission.â
âThatâs,â You shook your head, ânot my situation.â
âIsnât it?â
âI donât know.â You shook your head and looked back toward the bartender who was busy with a group of women further down the bar. The sound of vibrating vaguely filled the air and you leaned closer to Nima who immediately wrapped her arms around you in a hug. âYouâre vibrating.â
âYouâre vibrating.â
You found her purse and opened it so you could rifle through it. It dawned on you then that somewhere around bar two and drink five you had shoved your phone in her purse for safe keeping. When you finally managed to pull it out, Joelâs face was flashing on the screen and you yelped in surprise. You tossed the phone onto the bar and held your face between your hands.
âOh, no. Oh, no, no.â You shook your head and the vibration stopped. Joelâs picture disappeared and was replaced with a notification of a missed call that joined the notification telling you that you had unread messages. Your eyes snapped to Nima who was trying to drink out of her empty cup again. âJoel.â
âBastard man.â Nima edited.
âDinner.â You grimaced. âAt 7. Iâm supposed to get dinner with Joel at 7. Itâs 6:35.â
Nima shook her head and crunched the ice she had shoveled into her mouth, âBastard man can go to dinner with his wife tonight.â
 You grimaced, âI hate all the words you just used.â
The bartender began to wander over and Nima turned to order more drinks. You picked up your phone and leaned against the bartop with your elbow. With a frown and furrowed brow, you opened your text messages. Every unread text was from Joel unsurprisingly. The first came in at 4:29 and it was a simple, âHey sugar, Iâm excited to see you tonightâ. The next was almost exactly an hour later and it said, âHope your dayâs been alright. We still on for tonight?â. Finally, the most recent at 6:15, was just your name with a question mark.
You set the phone back down before the temptation to reply could overcome you. It only sat on the bartop for a second before it began to vibrate violently as another call came in. Joelâs face filled the screen and you felt a wave of sadness drag you under. The fact that you were mourning the lack of his presence to this degree was probably a sign you were doing this âsugar babyâ thing very wrong.
âMaybe I should answer it.â You voiced the thought aloud.
Nima caught it and gasped before slapping her hand on top of the still buzzing phone, âNo, maâam! You will not be doing that.â The bartender set two new drinks between the two of you. Nima pushed one in front of you and moved the straw to point directly at you. âDrink.â
You took a sip then spoke, âI donât even know the whole storyâ€â Nima pushed your face back to the straw so you took another long sip. âMaybe itâs a misunderstandingâŠâ This time your lips found their way to the straw on their own accord and you took a sip that could be argued as dangerously long. âI need to talk to him. Confront him. Demand answers.â
âYes. To all of that. Eventually.â Nima replied with a nod. She reached forward and bopped you on the nose with her finger. âBut not tonight.â
âWhy not?â
âBecause I know one thing in life,â Nima held up the one finger she used to bop your nose, âYou do not have serious conversations while drunk.â
You shook your head with a pout, âI thought you said you donât like being the voice of reason.â
âIf it means helping you, Iâll always lean toward reason, babe.âÂ
The two of you went back to drinking. Your vibrating phone stopped and a few seconds passed before a notification for a voicemail popped up. You turned to Nima, âCan I listen to it? Thatâs not talking. Thatâs listening.â
Nima chewed on her straw slowly before bobbing her head in an affirmative nod, âI shall allow it.â
You picked up the phone to listen to the message he left you.
âHey, sugar.â Joelâs voice rumbled over the line and you felt your chest physically ache at the sound. You closed your eyes in annoyance with yourself. If you hadnât fallen so hard, so fast for this man you wouldnât be in this scenario to begin with. âGotta say Iâm a little worried. Havenât heard from ya all day. Gimme a call when ya get this.â
You groaned and set your head down on the bar. Guilt gnawed at you. It felt childish of you to be ghosting him like this, and that wasnât your typical go to move. You had enough respect for the people in your life to address them when needed rather than hide behind voicemail. With the guilt was a swirling vortex of anger. You were angry at Joel for not being up front with you. You were angry at Yo-Yo for being the one to plant the initial doubt that started all this. You were angry at yourself most of all. Angry that you felt guilt at all, angry that you had foolishly placed so much trust in a man you barely knew, angry that despite everything there was still a part of you that craved his presence. You missed his touch and his voice. You missed those burning brown eyes and the way his very glance could melt you into a puddle.
âYou okay, babe?â Nimaâs voice asked softly. You shook your head without lifting it. âIâm sorry. I can break his knee caps if you want?â
âWhat?â You lifted your gaze.
âWhat?â She replied innocently.Â
The phone began to vibrate again startling you. He had just called so you didnât expect him to call again, but then again you were supposed to be in your apartment waiting for him to pick you up for dinner. You pictured him standing at your door dressed up and holding a bouquet of flowers. Nausea rolled over you in waves, and you grabbed your mixed drink thinking it could cure your troubles.
A few minutes passed before another voicemail was left. You snatched your phone up and shoved it back into Nimaâs purse so it would be out of your line of sight†not even bothering to listen to the second voicemail. Tomorrow, you decided. Tomorrow you would confront Joel and have this difficult conversation. You both finished the drinks in front of you as the lively bar continued to thrive around you.
âWhy is he married?â You asked suddenly. Nima must have known it wasnât a question you expected an actual answer to as she stayed silent. You rested your face in your hands and sighed. With your eyes closed against your hands like this you began to feel dizzy. A sure sign that you should stop drinking. Nima rubbed your back soothingly and you dropped your hands to shoot her an appreciative glance. âYouâre the best best friend a girl could ask for.â
âI know, babe. And you know what else I know?â Nima squished your cheeks together with a wide grin, âYou deserve the universe in a gold hand basket, and any man who canât see that or who would play games with your big, loving heart doesnât deserve you.â
You laughed and Nima chuckled herself before letting go of your face to pick up her empty glass. Her tongue struggled to find the straw but once it did she tried to take a big gulp only to get drops and air. Nima pulled away from her straw and furrowed her brow, âWho finished my drink?â
With another laugh, you raised your hand to order two more drinks. At this point youâve already had so much to drink, what would one more hurt? You knew the hangover tomorrow was going to be a bad one, but a part of you was looking forward to it. There would be no mourning Joel tomorrow if your head hurt too much to even think his name.Â
Nima successfully managed to distract you again as she drunkenly delved into a story you werenât quite following, but you enjoyed the way she told it. A low whistle interrupted the moment of peace the two of you had found. You glanced past Nima to see two men in business suits wandering over. Nothing about them stood out to you. One was brunet and the other blond, but they both looked like they never grew out of the frat lifestyle on a college campus.
âWe saw you two pretty ladies from over there and wanted to come and offer you our company.â The blond greeted smugly.
Nima turned in her seat to face him and waved her hand at him while taking a long sip of her drink until the ice rattled in the glass. Then she pulled the straw out of her mouth to finally speak with a shake of her head, âSorry, we donât speak english.â
âYou just said that in English.â The blond chuckled.
âSorry, sorry.â Nima waved her hand once more. âI donât understand your accent.â
You snickered under your breath while chewing on your straw. The brunet stepped forward to stand side by side with the other and shook his head, âNo need to be a bitch. We just wanted to talk.â
âOh, you havenât even begun to see bitchy yet.â Nima pointed her glass in their direction†a bit of ice sloshing out with the exaggerated movement. âI can show you bitchy.â She reached back to swat at your arm. âTell them, babe.â
âShe can.â You nodded in agreement.
The blond set a hand on his friendâs shoulder and tugged him back, âLetâs just go, man.â
The brunet reluctantly let himself get dragged away, but he continued to stare at you and Nima the entire time. Nima spun in her seat and scoffed, âWhere was I before I was interrupted by douchebag one and douchebag two?â
âIâm not gonna lie,â You shrugged, âI have no idea.â
âIâll pick a place then.â Nima said and jumped into the middle of her story. âSo, there I was covered head to toe in honey.â
Same as before, you really couldnât keep track of her tale but it amused you all the same. The two of you chatted for another minute or two before a new face came across the two of you again. Nima had bounced in her seat, excited, and it knocked her strawberry shaped purse to the floor. Your phone clattered out. Before you could climb off the bar stool to grab it, a man passing knelt down and scooped it up. In one tanned hand he grabbed the purse and in the other your phone. The phoneâs screen lit up and you swallowed at the sight of the multiple missed messages all from the same person.Â
âOh.â The man cleared his throat and straightened his stance. He was handsome with a kind face. Dark hair, a bit on the longer side, was messily pushed back and it matched the scruff on his upper lip and chin. The man wore a pink button up shirt, all the buttons undone, over a white t-shirt. âI suppose this is yours, miss?â
You begun to reach out, âThanksâ€â
âHold it!â Nima pointed at the man making his dark, brown eyes widen. âState your intentions, sir!â
âToâŠreturn your purse?â He lifted up the strawberry bag.
Nima narrowed her eyes at him and snatched it away, âLikely story.â
âThank you.â You reached out and he handed the phone over to you. A glance down revealed four missed calls, two unheard voicemails, and five texts. You winced at the sight and set your phone face down on the bar. You were surprised to see the man still standing by your stools. âYouâŠâ You narrowed your eyes at him. âYou look familiar. Have we met before?â
He chuckled and shook his head, âAfraid not, maâam.â
It was sitting on the tip of your tongue, but your foggy brain just couldnât quite grasp it. Nima snapped her fingers and pointed at him. âI got it. Heâs that guy.â You lifted an eyebrow at her words and she nodded frantically. âYeah, heâs that actor! You play in that one show with, like, the zombies or whatever, right?â
âNot at all.â He laughed with a shake of his head. âI ainât no actor.â
âWell then, Iâm out of guesses.â Nima grumbled. She tilted her head, looking him up and down once more, âYou seem nice enough. Got a pretty face. You rich? You wanna be a sugar daddy? Sheâs in the market.â
You rolled your eyes, âNima.â
âYouâre in the market for a sugar daddy?â The man asked in shock. You could hardly blame the man for his confusion and disbelief. This was hardly a normal bar conversation. âReally?â
âNo. Sheâs just drunk.â
âIrrelevant.â Nima argued.
You chuckled then introduced yourself and Nima. The man paused for a beat before nodding and offering you his hand. âNice to meet you both. My name is Tommy.â It took a second to click, but once the name finally wormed its way through your mind your eyes widened. Tommy chuckled and answered your unspoken question, âYeah. I am.â
Nima glanced between you two with a frown, âHold on, Iâm not following. You are what? Youâll be her new sugar daddy?â
âNo way in hell.â Tommy grinned. âIf I even thought 'bout it, my brotherâd skin me alive.â
The look on Nimaâs face stayed confused until you swallowed the lump in your throat and finally spoke, âItâs⊠Nima, this is Joelâs brother.â
Her face remained frozen before morphing into one of shock. She gasped, almost comically, and pointed at him. âOh, fuck.â Her eyebrows furrowed into a glare. âYou son of a bitch, your brother is a son of a bitch!â
Tommy didnât pay her outburst any mind, but his eyes darted back to you. âI asked my brother to come out drinkin' with me tonight, but he said ânoâ cause he had a date with you.â Tommy stuck his hands into his pockets. âFunny Iâm findin' you here without him.â
âThatâs because your brother is too busy with his wife to be with my girl!â
Tommyâs eyebrows furrowed in surprise and he glanced back to you, âHe already told you about her?â
It was quite possibly the worst string of words you could have heard all day. Only in competition with Nimaâs âHeâs married, babeâ. You felt nauseous and dizzy†the breath stolen from you again. Nima was arguing with Tommy, you could hear her voice, but you couldnât concretely understand a single word that was said. When you finally managed to get a handle on reality, you looked back to see things had fallen apart and more time than you realized had passed in your mental breakdown.Â
The blond and brunet from earlier, in the suits, had come back and were somehow arguing with Tommy and Nima now. You suddenly began to regret the last two drinks you had. Maybe if you had gone with a couple glasses of water instead youâd be able to puzzle out exactly what was going on right now.
âGet the hell outta here. They ainât interested.â Tommy snapped.
âJust curious as to why we werenât good enough for these bitches and you were.â The brunet slurred his words. Tommy stood a step in front of Nima who had slid off her bar stool to stand in front of you with her hands on her hips. âWhatâs so special about you, bub?â
âUgh. How about the two of you run off to the bathroom and jack each other off, huh? Then leave us the fuck alone.â Nima sneered.
âShut your damn mouth!âÂ
The blond tried to push past Tommy toward Nima, but Tommy shoved him back immediately. He grabbed the guy by the collar. âYou gonna charge at a woman like that? Fuckin' coward.â Tommyâs voice came out in a gravelly growl that reminded you so much of Joel that it was staggering. âYou got a problem, you take it up with me.â
The next moment happened fast. The blond tried to swing out at Tommy so Tommy blocked it with his elbow before tackling the man to the ground. The brunet grabbed Nima and wrapped his arms around her. She howled in anger and squirmed in his arms trying to find purchase to hit him. The brunet spun so his back was to you and you slid off the stool. Without pause, without thought, you picked up your empty glass and smashed it to the back of the manâs head. He released Nima, crumpling to the ground with a groan, and any shred of a fight stoppedâ€as did the entire bar.
Tommy was kneeling on the ground pinning the blond while Nima stood off to the side.
âOh my God.â Nima squealed, amused.
âOh my God.â Tommy blurted, impressed.
âOh my God.â You gasped, shocked at your own action.
You were panting, damn near hyperventilating, as the brunet began to rise on shaky limbs. Other patrons nearby converged on the scene to help out and before you knew it you were being ushered off to the side where a few couches and seats sat in a lounge area.Â
âYouâre such a badass.â Nima gushed from beside you. "Howâs your hand??â
âHurts.â You mumbled and stared down at the white cloth wrapped around your hand. Bright red was beginning to seep through. The consequences of smashing glass against the back of someoneâs skull. Police had shown up and you knew Tommy was across the room talking to them. But still, your eyes stayed glued on your hand. The cuts werenât terrible but they stung something awful.
âBabe?â You finally looked up and met Nimaâs concerned eyes. She nodded, âYou alright?â
You shot her a small smile, âYeah. Are you okay? I canât believe he grabbed you.â
âIâm fine.â Nima peeked at your hand then stood. âIâm gonna see if this bar has a real first aid kit we can use. Be right back.â
She jumped up and jogged over to the bar. You sunk in your seat with a sigh and leaned your head against the back of the couch. There had been something very sobering about smashing the glass against that guyâs head. The adrenaline and pain cleared any lingering fog from your previous drinks right out of your head. It left room for you to think about Joel. Meeting his brother certainly didnât help. Tommy clapped one of the officerâs on the shoulder with a smile and they went separate ways. You lifted your head when you heard his footsteps draw near.
âWell, I spoke to the police.â Tommy stuck his hands into his pockets. âYouâre not gonna get in trouble for the, you know, the glass. Wonât have to go downtown with âem.â You breathed a sigh of relief. Tommy held your gaze for a few more seconds before scrunching his nose and bobbing his head toward you. âAnd Joel is, uh, on his way.â
You covered your face with your good hand and groaned, âCan I please just be arrested instead?â
âSorry, no can do.â Tommy sat down beside you. âYou know, I didnât say it earlier, but itâs nice to finally meet you. Joel never shuts up about you.â
âPlease. Donât.â You blurted. âI canât⊠I canât talk about him right now.â
Tommy nodded, âRight. I, uh, when I called him we didnât talk much.â He laced his fingers together and rested his arms on his knees. âI mentioned you were hurt and things kind of spiraled from there. Thatâs probably for the best though. I donât wanna get in between a loverâs quarrelâ€â
âIâm not his lover.â You snapped, and you hated the way your voice cracked. You shook your head, âNot if heâs married. NotâŠâ The adrenaline was beginning to wear off and you were exhausted to your very bones. âThis is so fucked up. I never should've agreed toâŠ
Tommy didnât immediately reply. He sighed, âI donât know you, and I donât got the exact details of whatâs going on right now, but⊠Iâm glad you agreed.â He turned and met your gaze with a tight smile. âJoelâs been⊠Heâs been better. Joel was in a rut for a long time. So long that I kind of forgot he was in one. For a while, that was just Joel.â Tommyâs smile grew as he chuckled. âBut ever since the two of you met, itâs like this weight has been lifted from his shoulders. Weâve all noticed it, and weâre all thankful.â
  âHeâs married.â You whispered. âAnd he didnât tell me.â
Tommy rubbed the back of his neck, âI know, but itâs†itâs not that simple.â He nervously chewed on his lower lip. âCan you just give him a chance to explain?â You flexed your hand and sucked in a sharp breath as pain lanced up your arm. âConsider it a favor for me.â
âA favor for you?â You snorted.
âYeah. I kept you out of prison, remember?â Tommy joked.
You cracked a smile and Tommyâs smile widened in victory. Nima skipped back over and dropped into the seat on your other side. She pulled your hand into her lap and carefully unpeeled the cloth away. As Nima rewrapped your hand while Tommy criticized her technique and the two bickered over you. You couldnât help but flex your hand when she finished.
âCome on, pinkie.â Tommy stood. âIâll take you home.â
âUh, I am not leaving my girl here alone.â
âJoel will be here soon.â
âThen Iâm definitely not leaving her alone!â
You reached out to squeeze her wrist and gave her a reassuring nod, âIâll be okay. Gotta talk to him eventually, right?â
âYeah, but that doesnât have to be right now.â Nima argued. You pulled her into a hug to reassure her once again. Maybe this was a bad idea, but you had just smashed a glass against a guyâs head so the degree of your bad ideas couldn't possibly get worse. Nima sighed and stood up too. âOkay. Youâre sure youâre fine?â
Tommy clapped his hands. âJoelâs a few minutes away. But we can stay until he gets here if you want.â
âNo.â You shook your head. The thought of being alone for a minute was kind of nice. âYou guys go.â Your eyes locked onto Nima. âIf youâre okay with him driving you.â You glanced at Tommy. âNo offense.â
He held his hands up in surrender and shrugged nonchalantly. Nima nodded, âWe survived a bar brawl together. Weâre bonded.â She grinned and pulled her strawberry purse around her shoulders. âPlus, worse comes to worse, I can stab him.â
âYou can what now?â Tommy questioned.
âYouâve already offered me a ride. Itâs too late to back out now.â
âFine, pinkie.â Tommy waved her to follow.Â
You watched them go and sunk in your seat. The sounds of the bar was decent background noise, but it wasnât enough to drown out the noise in your head. You picked at the edges of the gauze wrapped around your hand. Your eyes felt heavy and if you werenât careful you were going to pass out on this bar couch surrounded by strangers. It was the sound of a crash that startled you back into the moment, and when you looked up from your hand you realized the door had been thrown open hard enough to hit the wall. Joel stood in the doorway panicked and wild eyed. He wore a suit without the tie and his shirt was unbuttoned at the top.
You stayed silent, sinking further into your seat, and watched as Joelâs wide eyes scanned the room. His gaze finally landed on you, doing a double take, and when he realized where you were you saw his shoulders slump in relief. Joel jogged across the room until he was able to kneel down in front of you. Joelâs warm hands found your face, cupping it softly, as he sighed, âSugar, what the hell is goin' on? Are you okay?â Joelâs eyes studied your face then glanced down at your hand. âJesus, your hand. Tommy called me. Sugar, Iâ€â
âIâm okay.â You whispered, throat growing tight, âI just wanna go home, Joel.â
Joel tensed and he nodded, âYeah. Alright. Letâs get you home.â
The ride in the truck beside Joel may have been the most awkward and tense ride of your entire life. It was silent. The only sound coming from the road outside. Joelâs hands were white knuckled around the steering wheel. You assumed his tension had something to do with you ghosting him this evening. His truck pulled up outside your apartment complex and your alcohol soaked brain realized not only did you not have your keys but you also no longer had your phone. Both were sitting in Nimaâs purse right now.
You opened the door fully prepared to sleep outside your apartment on the welcome mat like a lost dog, but Joel grasped you by the arm cautiously to hold you in place. âYou got your key?â You twisted your lips knowing he wasnât going to fall for a lie. âWhere is your key?â
âWith Nima.â You mumbled. âShe has my phone too.â
Joel sighed and let go of you to instead grab the truck door and shut it. He buckled you back into the seat and began to drive once more. You wanted to ask where he was taking you, but none of the words would come out. You drowned in your indecision while picking at the bandage on your hand. Joel suddenly reached over and lightly pushed your hand away from the injury.
âStop pickin' at it, sugar.â
âWhere are we going?â You blurted.
Joel shifted in his seat, âMy place.â
âI donât wanna go to your place.â You mumbled.
âDonât care.â Joel replied gruffly and you lifted your head to glare at his side profile.Â
The tone of his voice stirred something inside you, and you felt the dormant anger start to reawaken. It had gotten buried under everything that happened, but now it was back full fledged. You sat up, âTake me back. I want to go home.â
âYou donât have your key.â
âI donât care.â You snapped. âTake me home, Joel!â
âYouâre comin' to my place where I know you can safely sleep it off, 'nd then tomorrow weâll figure out how to get ya back into your apartment. Understood?â
You scoffed, âDonât talk down to me. Iâm not a child, Joel.â
âOh, youâre not?â Joel scoffed. His tone was angry and frustrated. âCause youâre sure as hell actin' like one.â He shot a glare in your direction before focusing back on the road. âAre you outta your goddamn mind?! Do you know how worried I was?â You crossed your arms and stared out the passenger window. âI donâ hear from you all day long. You disappear on me with no explanation 'nd then I get a call from my baby brother that youâve been in a bar fight? And that youâre hurt?!â You stayed silent and Joel scoffed. âAnd now I get the silent treatment? Very mature.â
âYou donât want to argue with me on whatâs mature, Joel.â You said, head whipping back to glare at him.
âWhat the hell is that supposed to mean??â
âYouâre a hypocrite!â
âExcuse me?â
You scoffed, âItâs not very mature for a married man to pay a sugar baby for attention.â Joel hit the brakes and the seat belt caught you as the truck screeched to a stop. You glanced out the window to see his truck had reached a neighborhood and the streets were mostly void of other vehicles. When you turned back to Joel, you found him staring at you in a mix of shock and horror. You shook your head, âWhat was I, Joel? Some kind of midlife crisis?â
Pain could be seen through the horror, and he reached out to grab your wrist again. âNo. No, thatâs notâŠâ Joelâs voice was hoarse and broken. He whispered your name. âPlease. Thatâs not what this is.â
You tugged your arm away from his grip. âI donât wanna talk about this right now, Joel. Either start driving again or Iâm gonna get out.â
Joel kept his hands to himself as he slowly went back to driving. As if the awkward silence hadnât been painful before it was downright agonizing now. You were pressing your thumb into the wounds of your palm just to try and keep from crying. Joel pulled into the driveway a few minutes later, and you couldnât even get your brain to collect a single feature of the house in front of you. Joel jumped out of the truck and you stayed frozen. The passenger door opened but Joel didnât move to pull you out. He held the top of the door frame and a foot rested on the running board so he could lean in just marginally.
âSugarâŠâ
âDonât, Joel.â You said firmly. âDonât.â
âPlease just let meâ€â
âAre you married?â
Joelâs face crumpled in agony and he hung his head, âItâs⊠Itâs not that simple. Just let meâ€â
âItâs a yes or no question.â You shrugged and tried to ignore the tears welling up in your eyes.
Joel looked like he was on the verge of a panic attack. His eyes were squeezed shut, but he still refused to answer. You whispered his name. Finally, he lifted his gaze back to you and opened his mouth. His jaw hung open silently for a second before he could speak. â...Yes.â
You felt the tears lingering at the waterline drip down your cheeks and hastily began to wipe them away with your hands. Joel gasped and began to reach out but when you flinched he held back. He shook his head, âYouâre bleedin'.â
The bandage around your hand was soaked with blood, probably from digging your thumb into the wounds, and when you felt your cheek with your fingertips they came back tinted red. You must have smeared it across your face.Â
âSugar, let me⊠let me take you inside.â Joel murmured. âPlease. I know youâre⊠upset, 'nd you have every reason to hate me right now, but⊠just let me get you inside.â His hand reached out for you once more, but he stopped himself. âYou can leave in the mornin', but for tonight just†just let me take care of you. Please.â
You gave a small nod. It felt weak of you, but you reassured yourself that you had little to no other option. Your hand hurt, your head ached, you were exhausted to your very being, and deep down you were torn between wanting to yell and scream or curl into a ball and cry. Joel took a few steps back to allow you to climb down yourself, but when you wavered his arms shot out to try and steady you. Joel herded you toward the front door without actually touching you.Â
Your eyebrows furrowed when you studied his front porch. The entire front of his house didnât look like the typical rich LA style you were accustomed to seeing. In fact, his porch and front door reminded you of a quaint farmhouse. Joel unlocked his front door and held it open for you to walk in. Right inside the house, the foyer had an open style with a set of stairs pressed against the wall just up ahead. It opened straight into a large living room that evolved into a dining room with a matching open kitchen to the side. The entire back wall by the kitchen and dining area was made of glass but the back porch lights were off so you couldnât see the view.Â
Joel tossed his keys into a bowl sitting on an accent table against the wall right by the door. You glanced over to a little bench built into the wall on the other side beneath a set of bay windows. The rest of his furniture from what you could see was modern and plain. You were drunk off alcohol and misery, but your brain was still able to take the time to note that Joelâs furniture didnât match what you imagined him to have.
âCâmon.â Joel motioned you up the stairs. He followed after you and when you reached the top of the stairs he pointed to the left. You stepped into the master bedroom and Joel slid in past you moving straight toward the master bath. While he rooted around for something, you glanced around his room. There was a king sized bed sitting in the middle of the room covered in dark green sheets. A window sat on either side of the bed. The wall to the right was where the bathroom door and the closet door sat, but on the left was a single loveseat pushed against the wall. All the furniture was dark brown including the large dresser against the wall by the door and the smaller bedside drawers on either side of the bed under the windows. You drifted toward one of the bedside drawers where a photo was propped up. It was of Joel and two young girls. Joel had shown you enough pictures of Sarah and Ellie for you to recognize them, but in this photo all three of them were significantly younger.Â
The sound of a throat clearing made you look up to see Joel standing there with a first aid kit in hand. âSit down for me?â You sat on the side of the bed and Joel sat beside you. He opened the kit then carefully unwrapped your hand. When he saw the three lines haphazardly cut into your palm he let out a soft hiss. âYou hurtin' much?â
âIt stings some.â You mumbled. He hummed in response and used an alcohol swab to clean up the cuts. Joel did so with soft touches and his eyes flickered to your features every second or so to check in on your status. You locked your jaw to bite back any sounds of pain that tried to slip out.Â
âThey look bad, but I donâ think theyâll need stitches.â Joel thought out loud.Â
âGood.â You said. Joel grabbed some fresh gauze and began to wrap it around your hand. You studied his features as he focused so intently on the task at hand. His warm gaze was burned into your skin as his eyebrows furrowed in concentration. You had the urge to trace your fingers through the scruff along his jawline. When he finished, he lifted his gaze and his eyes locked with yours. The two of you stared at one another in tense silence. Pain and longing filled his brown eyes, and you wondered if it could somehow just be a reflection of your own. It made no sense for you to both be so miserable right now. âWhere is she?â
Joel tensed, âWhat?â
âWhere is your wife?â You asked more firmly.Â
âAre you sure you wanna get into this tonight?â
âI just want answers, Joel.â You sighed. âI need something. My mind has been a mess since we left Vegas.â Joelâs face crumpled as he closed his eyes with a sigh. âYo-yo told me I wasnât your first sugar baby and then she said you were married to your first sugar baby.â The words were falling out like pouring water now. âAnd then Nima has a cousin who has a cousin who has a friend or something that was able to find your marriage certificateâ€â
Joel murmured your name in reverence and opened his eyes. He shook his head. âIâm sorry. I shouldâve told you from the start. That way thereâd be no miscommunication or confusion. I meant to. But⊠I kept puttin' it off 'nd it got to the point where too much time had passedâŠâ Joel hesitantly reached out for you and when you didnât shy away he settled his hand on your arm. âI did have a sugar baby before you. Itâs a⊠long story, but I am not married to her.âÂ
Your eyebrows furrowed, âYou didnât marry her?â
âNo. Absolutely not. She was⊠Like I said, itâs a long story.â Joel squeezed your arm. âOne that I promise to tell you. In the mornin', when youâre not half drunk 'nd half hungover all at once.â
âThen who the hell are you married to, Joel?â
âI⊠I am technically still married to Celina.â Joel finally spat the words out. You shook your head in confusion. The name was foreign to you, but Joel heaved another sigh and added, âSarahâs mom.â
âHold me. In these quiet nights, just hold me.â
|âââââââââââ ⎔ âââââââââââ|
It was yet another night of endless nightmares. You had gotten one earlier already, but instead of waking Nat up, you had decided to wait it out, and eventually you went back to sleep.
It wasn't something to worry over much really, but then you had gotten yet another one, more so it was worse, and there's no way you're getting back to sleep now. Not anyone could've gone back to sleep after having such terrors like those.
You wondered why, because all you wanted was a good night's sleep, but it seemed impossible to get one without waking up with your heart beating fast and loudly.
You stare at Nat's sleeping figure, her back facing you while your breathing was scattered from the nightmare.
With hesitation, you shuffle a little closer to her after taking a deep breath to collect yourself slightly. You reach out your hand, gently shaking her shoulder.
"N-Nat...?" your voice was small, and it wavered as you called out her name, but with a last shake, she slowly woke up with a confused hum.
Her eyes started to slowly open, blinking away the sleepiness. When she saw the tears falling down your cheeks, and further more, heard your sniffling, her eyes opened quicker.
"...Oh, ĐŒĐŸŃ Đ»ŃĐ±ĐŸĐČ (my love), what happened?" her voice comes out groggily, but softly. Her hand instantly went up to cup your cheek, letting the tears soak her thumb instead, and her russian having come out so easily because of her tiredness.
"Nightmare." the one word quietly whispered from you was enough for her to understand. Having had her very own horrid flashbacks in the midst of nighttime, and you being there for her before. Just as she is for you now.
She puts her arms around your body, and pulls you closer, holding you gently. You go to hide in the crook of her neck, having felt it gave you even more of a sense of safety, but with her actually there beside you now, you already know nothing could come close to either of you. Her soft shushes were like a gentle melody.
"You're safe now, ĐŽĐ”ŃĐșĐ° (baby)." She puts a kiss on the top of your head, whispering reassurances while she dragged her thumb back and forth, rubbing your back. Your heartbeat starts to slow down to a steady pulse while you held her like she was about to disappear.
Although her comforting did ease down your breathing, you were still shaking. Nat turns on the dim lamp next to her, so the room could be lit up. And, perhaps, hoping that it'll make the monsters in your head fear away from the light, too.
When Nat looked to turn the light switch on, she also took a chance to glance at the clock. Four am. The sun itself hasn't even gotten up either. Her heart ached at seeing you wake up with almost as much fear as she does, but she takes her moment to think about every little thing you did to take care of her countless times before.
You were missing the comfort of her touch, she knew. So, in replacement of her hand that was once on your back off to grab some things, she places her other hand.
She takes ahold of the tv remote, remembering to instantly reduce the volume so any loud noise coming from it wouldn't suddenly leave you shaking worse from shock.
Her hand kept it's comforting touches on you, with her whispering sweet little reassurances every now and then as she loaded up your favorite film. One of the few remedies the two of you had when the other had nightmares.
She sets the tv remote down and takes your shaking hand into her steady one, leaving a kiss on the soft skin of your knuckles that were white from your grip of a fist from before. Your head turns to hide into her shoulder, her little gestures of love luring you out from the terror. The grip you held loosens when love wins over fear.
As the familiar sounds of your favorite film playing in the background fills your ears, the shaking in your bones start to settle down.
You turn around, moving to lay your head on her chest while she keeps her embrace on you gently, keeping you safe from anything and everything.
The screen wasn't blinding, thankfully, Nat had already adjusted the brightness. The scenes played on the tv, and though the redhead was as tired as you were, her eyes were focused on both you and the film, hoping the story was distracting enough for her to keep herself awake.
All the while Natasha was trying to keep her eyes open, yours, on the other hand, was starting to falter already.
As the film progressed, slowly, Natasha starts to notice just how quiet you've been, and how soft your breathing is now. Once she's fully taken notice by leaning over slightly to look at you, she sees your eyes closed peacefully in slumber. She hopes you don't wake up with another nightmare. All the redhead wanted to do was go in your head and rid it of any scary situations, and instead fill it with content and happy moments.
If only she was Wanda. But that didn't matter. All she has to do and is doing is her best to take care of you, and it's working out perfectly. She was sure to plan something for tomorrow though, just to make you forget even just a little, of whatever had left you shaking so badly in the middle of your sleep.
She gently pushes a strand of hair off your face, careful not to tickle your skin and wake you up, and then retreated back to her comfortable position. She turns off the tv and the lamp, wanting to drift back off to sleep as you had.
With the moon still glowing high in the sky, and with her arms around you keeping you safe, the both of you know the only morning that'll greet you later will be a peaceful one.
Build it and He will Come
a nightmare!Eddie x afab!Reader story
Note: You do not have to be familiar with the Nightmare Factory series to enjoy this. The timeline is non-linear and often very silly. At this point in the tale, Eddie and Reader have only met in dreams.
Word Count: 2.2k
No warnings, but my blog is for 18+ only
Notes: I could've very well made this a standalone story without putting it in with the Nightmare Factory, but I've missed thinking about those two so much I decided to make it work. I wrote this in August of last year and only recently found it in my WIPs. Decided not to be too fussy about editing and such because then I won't post it for another seven months.
@somnambulic-thing constructed a stunning tiny replica of Eddie's trailer, and then I got very inspired and wrote this for them. Somna, thank you for sharing your process with me, daydreaming with me, loving me, and everything else we do together with oceans between us.
It's complicated because Somna also works at the Nightmare Factory, and you can read that blurb here. But let's just forget about that for a moment.
---------
Youâd spent weeks working on the miniature version of the trailer from your dreams, right down to the corrugated roof carved from cardboard and dry grass ordered from a specialty shop; every little detail was important. You painted the inside walls black, imagining thatâs what he would do if he lived alone. Structurally, the overhang went on second to last, and then it was time to construct the front steps. Foamboard cut to exact specifications, and then frosted with a special putty that would need a couple hours to dry.
Nag Champa incense produced a smoky veil through the room to slip like a whisper between thin white curtains, escaping secrets into the night. You had the television on, but only as background noise, and also to drown out the nextdoor neighbor who always played their music a bit too loud that time of day. Â
It was late when you sat back to take in what youâd accomplished thus far. You stared at the miniature door opening next to where a bedroom would be, imagining a gremlin boy with long hair on the edge of his bed, practicing his guitar. You didnât know why that image popped into your head, but you could see him so clearly; somehow had vivid memories of how his warm skin smelled just below his ear. Â
How could they be memories? Perhaps an alien implanted them in your brain while you slept. Â
There was no furniture inside of the structure yet. The first piece youâd work on tomorrow would be the sofa out on the deck where you imagined him lounging to have a smoke and chat with the trailer park cats.Â
âGoodnight,â you whispered to your empty apartment, clicking off the desk lamp. Â
The next morning, you put your glasses on and shuffled to the kitchen to make some tea, absently wondering why your apartment smelled like nicotine. You didnât smoke, so it had to be coming from out on the street or the neighbors. Staring with weary, glazed eyes at the corner of the counter while the water boiled, your mood brightened when you remembered the project waiting for you at your desk.
While bouncing a tea bag in a mug of hot water, you went over to stand and admire how far the trailer model had progressed. The windows were next, and the air conditioning unit in his bedroom window, as well asâŠ
âThe fuck?â you gasped, frowning at the model, setting the mug down on some newspaper near the trailer so fast that some of the liquid sloshed down the side.
Somehow, there were marks in the dried putty of the steps. You were certain the surface had been smooth when you went to bed, but now youâd have to redo the finish.
You pulled the magnifying lamp over and sat down with a grunt, snatching up the steps to take a closer look. What couldâve possiblyâŠ
Wait
With the piece in question under magnification, you ran a thumb over the marks.
Why did they look like sole impressions from the bottom of tiny shoes?
In the process of trying to convince yourself that theyâd been made by a bug of some sort, some investigating told you that the octagon tread and the brand name Reebok were there in a crystal-clear impression.
And why were the footprints coming out of the trailer?
Going rigid, you put the steps down and used the tip of one finger to slide them away from you.
Your gaze flicked to the stained deck made of wood stir sticks, settling on a white bit of something there.
It had to be a piece of plaster or foam board, but just as you prepared to flick it away with your finger, something about it caught your eye.
Plucking tweezers from your craft tools, you denounced that it wasâŠ
âŠa half smoked cigarette? Filter and all?
You held it up to your nose, inhaling the sharp tang of nicotine.
It mustâve fallen from something else youâd been working on, or maybe you were so tired last night, you didnât remember making it as a joke. The trailer youâd been seeing in your dreams mightâve had some cigarette stubs scattered around, you nodded your head, agreeing with yourself. Â
Later that evening, next to the couch on the deck, you set an obsidian miniature ashtray, and then stared at it unblinking as if it were a trap for a feral raccoon that you wanted as a pet. Sporting bandaids on two fingers from various X-Acto knife cuts, youâd been so absorbed in finishing up some of the window details youâd forgotten to eat. Â
âWho does this home belong to?â You touching the steps to make sure they were dry this time before you snapped off the mag light. Â
The trailer in question haunted your dreams; you knew every dent and bit of chipped paint by heart. Youâd mentioned it to your therapist so many times that eventually they suggested you work through the imagery by creating something tangible. Â
âWhy this particular trailer though?â You whispered, eyebrows clenched as you took one last look at the empty ashtray before shutting everything off for the night.Â
Rising out of the sea of unconsciousness, it wasnât long before you kicked your legs out from under the covers the next day with childlike anticipation. It was a slow walk to the craft table though, sucking at your bottom lip and checking around the room with astute caution as if your craft project had somehow summoned masked marauders.Â
The steps were free from any fresh footprints, but the porch door to the trailer opened a crack and there wasâŠ
âIt canât beâŠâ a chill spiked the hairs on your arms.
Taking a sharp intake of breath and then holding it there, you eyeballed the ashtray that now had something inside it.
Your hands were shaking, and you feared you might knock the whole thing down if you reached in to grab it with your fingers. Scrambling for the tweezers with a hitch in your breath, you got a hold of the miniscule piece and set it under the magnifier, vibrating as you went. Â
OneâŠtwoâŠthree cigarette butts smoked down to the filter. Â
But then there was a fourth one that appeared to have been barely just lit and was still smoldering.
You stepped back, eyes dry, jaw slack, trying to register what you were seeing. It was the closest to what you imagined an out of body experience felt like.
Attention moving to the door left ajar, you managed to form the words with a trembling voice: âIs anyone in there?â
Wow, now you really did feel dumb. Who did you even think you were talking to? A mouse? A ghost? Some tiny person small enough to fit into the model? This wasnât The Secret of Nimh. Â
Just then, the door in question shut all the way, being pulled somehow from the inside. Â
And that was when you screamed.
It flew open again and there he was:
A tiny person no taller than an inch, wearing ripped jeans and a denim vest over a leather jacket stood in the doorway to your model. You took your glasses off, thinking it was an insect or some dark, floating spot in your vision.
He yelped at the same time you did, jumping back with a dramatic hop.
âShit you scared me!â He huffed, bending at the knees to put his hands on his thighs and catch his breath. âI didnât know youâd be so big.â
âExcuse me?â Your hip bumped into the edge of the countertop letting you know you could back up no further, eyes glued to him in horrific awe. âWhere did you come from? How is this happening? Why are youâ?â
âLook, Monkey. Itâs me,â he put his hands up in surrender.
You fumbled blindly in the nearby drawer, clattering for a knife, but only came up with a fork, which was just as well, brandishing it like a weapon. Â
âWhoa, easy now,â he halted, chuckling nervously.Â
You considered the possibility of a brain tumor.Â
He sank down on the top step to sit with one knee up in a way that disarmed you, and you slowly lowered the fork to your side, checking around to make sure you werenât being filmed for some hidden camera show. You made your way back to the table, squinting to get a better look at his face. Â
Realization dawned, and the piece of silverware went clattering to the floor.
âWaitâŠEddie?â
âIn the flesh,â he tucked his chin to look himself over. âJust not very much of it.â
My Eddie.
Pulling up a chair, you scooted closer, a smile tugging at the corners of your mouth. âHow are you here? I thought you werenât real. I mean, I thought I made you up?â
The visions, the dreams, all of those stories you wrote about a metalhead from the 80âs who also happened to be a charming dork. Although you did not know him, you also knew him to the depths of your soul. Beyond time and space, somewhere in the ether of the unknown, that is where you held each other.
âOh sweetheart, Iâm real,â his grin faded into a scowl of confusion. âBut I think my wish got lost in translation.â
âYour wish?â
âYeah, so,â he was playing with one of his rings, avoiding eye contact. âThereâs a Wishing Well where I come from, and it kinda hasâŠpowers.â
âPowers.â You repeated it flatly, trying to wrap your head around it.
He began to pace, and you realized he could easily sit on the tip of your finger. Â
âItâs not your typical water well with coins and shit, this one only accepts gifts. You have to give it something that is very special to you and only then is your wish considered. I just got my confirmation letter in the mail a few days ago, but I guess my ask wasnât specific enough.â
Your gaze wandered from him to the length of the trailer, mirroring his bewilderment. âIâve been to this place, havenât I? We sat on that porch together once.â
âYep, several times,â he nodded, shuffling his foot. âI brought you home to meet my Uncle Wayne, the one who got me a job at the factory. Also depends on what you consider real life.â
Mugs...so many coffee mugs...
âThe Nightmare Factory.â You whispered it, all the while thinking to yourself that it didnât make any sense. You could only catch the tail end of that memory before it slinked and faded into the nothingness like most dreams do. Â
After a long silence he spoke through grit teeth. âThe next Wishing Well employee I meet is getting chopped in the throat.â
âIs there a way toâŠâ your eyes darted to different utensils as if a pencil or some glue could help the situation. â...to undo the wish or get it adjusted somehow?â
He tilted his head to blink lovingly at you but said nothing.
âIâm sure we can think of something,â you were suddenly feeling upbeat. âMaybe we could, I donât know, contact the Wishing Well people and see ifââ
âI only have 24 hours,â he interrupted softly, thumbs sliding into his belt loops. â24 hours and then I have to go back.â
âOh,â your shoulders slumped.Â
âYeah it sucks,â he huffed, ending with a raspberry of a laugh. Â
After a while, he was in your hand, sitting cross-legged in your palm as you talked.Â
And then he was in the front pocket of your shirt and on your shoulder. You chopped up grapes for him, he urinated in your sink. Â
He wrapped himself around your pencil like it was a lamp post and went along for the ride while you worked on a drawing.Â
âI need to start lifting weights,â he snorted, sliding down to swing off your pinky and onto the table. âMy upper body strength sucks.â
Careful not to sit on him, you made a special spot on the ledge of the couch while you watched a movie.
âThis one goes to 11,â you both said simultaneously during a mutual favorite called This is Spinal Tap.
You kept yourself awake for as long as you could during those last few hours, drinking caffeine, nodding off in the chair by the model.
He walked over from the trailer and tapped your finger in the way he did when he wanted you to lift him up. Keeping your hand still, he climbed up onto your knuckle and tried to steady himself as it began to rise, windmilling his arms. Â
At eye level he whispered, âcloser,â with a curl of his hand, and he didn't say stop until he was near enough to kiss the tip of your nose.
âI think itâs time for you to get some sleep,â he took a wide stance, bracing when you moved him further out again. Â
âI donât want to,â you were actually pouting then, knowing that when you woke up he wouldnât be there anymore. Â
Actually, you didnât really know anything. How did any of this work, anyhow? Would he really just vanish into the ether after a certain time period? The whole thing made your brain itch and feel fuzzy. Â
The only thing you knew for sure was that you didnât want to lose him. The circumstances of him being no bigger than a thimble was not ideal, but youâd take what you could get. Â
âIâll rest in the crook of your neck, how about that?â
âWhat if I accidentally roll over and smother you?â
âThatâs a chance Iâm willing to take, sweetheart.â
you didnt know where you went so wrong-were you unlovable? nothing ever lasted nothing ever will, here you were again sobbing to your pillow
tears blur your eyes as you try to think clearly but you couldn't - your girlfriend has just broken up with you due to reasons you thought was so stupid
good things don't last they say yet cant you just have one thing to yourself for once? - its always you giving out love and never receiving any back
every moment felt like you were burning alive - knowing you will never find anyone that can actually love you till end of time
your phone rings with notifications every few seconds - from friends and family alike , they asked if you were alright
you couldn't respond cause you knew that you'd just end up lying - telling them yet again that you were alright and that you were just not feeling well
lara, your best friend has been calling you for the past 30 minutes - yet your hands seemed to fail every time you tried to reach for your phone and answer it
she didn't deserve to hear you sob for the maybe hundredth time this year about how you were unlovable and how you felt like you'll never meet the right person
lara felt like breaking down every time she saw you cry , just hearing your broken sobs made her die , knowing how much she can treat you way better but she didn't want to admit to you how much she really loved you
your mind was fogged over with hatred and depression nothing was worth living anymore , you slowly stood up and made your way to your balcony
the city lights faded beautifully , some blurred by your unshed tears , your hands shakily held the railings
"I'm sorry" you whisper , what were you sorry for? lara you both made a truce to never give up and always have each others back
you close your eyes and let the memories flood in , yet all of the good ones were with her with lara , it broke your heart that you didnt even talk to her before getting to this specific point
yet as you open your eyes you lift yourself up and stood on the railing , you took a quick look below you seeing no one you did it
you jumped, closing your eyes as the world around you faded into an inaudible sound, then everything was black as tears finally fell out of your eyes
this was it right? this was the end
lara drives to your apartment alarmed that you haven't responded to her calls , that's until she sees you lifeless on the cold pavement your head bleeding from what she can guess is impact of your fall
she runs out of her car quickly huddling your body trying to shake you to wake up or even show any signs of living
"y/n wake up! , don't leave me! shit don't do this to me please" she screams , she slowly started seeing the life drain out of your body , your hands got colder as your skin turned pale
as paramedics and police got to the place lara couldn't bring her self to let go of your body , she hugged you tightly regretting how late she got to your place
she wished that she just went even 20 minutes earlier , maybe just maybe she could've saved you , she could have held you for just a moment longer , she could wipe your tears away and replace it with your sickening sweet smile
days passed and none of those days did lara not sob her self to sleep, anytime she closed her eyes all she can see was you crying and begging her to help you
it was like a nightmare haunting her every night , any moment by then lara would've crumbled , yet she just wanted to see you one last time and feel your arms wrap around her just one more time
lara stood before the very same balcony you have leaped from , its like a sick play just the way you were sobbing lara was too, she wore your clothes trying to smell the comfort you bring to her life
"i want us to be together y/n , wait for me" lara mutters as she places herself above the railings , she closes her eyes and hugs herself leaping
her worries were washed away , all lara could see was you smiling at her , and as her body hits the floor all she could do was smile , she was finally gonna be with you
all lara could think about was you , even in her final moment all she wanted was you
