Don't you think it's funny cause actual canon gay characters in BL manga will say "I love you" but only the shounen bromance can spew out some of the most romantic shit akin to a 19th century poet writing a letter expressing his surpressed love for his lover 😭.....

Genuniely can't tell if it's bait or not, but I'm going to treat this ask seriously anyway.

Here, have some examples of beautiful and poetic expressions of love in BL media!

I'm going to start with my favourite murder husbands, Wen Kexing and Zhou Zishu from Word of Honor/Faraway Wanderers!

This happens in episode nine, less than one third into the story- it's that early, they've known each other for like a week and are already able to tell they're meant to be. They've made their decision to be together, and over the course of the story:

They defend each other multiple times and fight side by side in multiple episodes, sometimes protecting their adopted kid/mentee Chengling as well

Zhou Zishu is willing to go against the whole martial arts society for his boyfriend. With zero hesistation, might I add.

They both know the other has done horrible things (lots of murder on both sides here) and that's not only okay, it's a big part of why they're soulmates and get each other so well!

Zhou Zishu is slowly dying (poisoned nails in his chest, long story) and Wen Kexing can and will risk his life to save him. Don't worry, they get a happy ending both in the show and the novel even if the show's last episode is behind a paywall and Netflix didn't even include it for some reason?

But enough about them, let's move on to the immortal fantasy genre boyfriends Hua Cheng and Xie Lian from Heaven Official's Blessing!

Please note how Hua Cheng is ready to accept Xie Lian in whatever state he's currently in- as a god, a fallen outcast, even grieving and angry and at his absolute lowest. He's stood by Xie Lian in his worst moments, even if at the time Xie Lian had no idea it was him.

Hua Cheng has loved Xie Lian for 800 years, ever since he was a boy Xie Lian saved from falling to his death during a procession.

Xie Lian became a god, then fell due to horrible circumstances, almost committed a war crime against another nation that destroyed his country, spend 800 years wandering the mortal realm as a poor cultivator with his powers greatly reduced, and eventually ascended to become a god again. Throughout it all, Hua Cheng loved him and did his best to help him and then find him.

They're both adorable and the definition of a power couple once they're reunited- no spoilers, but they eventually fight an incredibly powerful god side by side and win & the last scene in the story is them reuniting for good since there's no more obstacles to their immortal love.

Let's move on to my favourite Japanese BL, Our Dining Table (also available as a series that came out semi-recently, but the examples below are from the manga.)

Yutaka is a lonely salesman who meets Minoru, a restaurant worker and his much younger brother Tane grieving the death of their mother.

Yutaka and Minoru hit it off by bonding through food they cook and share. The series is incredibly heartwarming, and as seen above Yutaka becomes a much happier person thanks to both his new relationship and big brother-like bond with little Tane.

As a little bonus, the whole found family together!

This post can't be complete without Golden Stage (or Golden Terrace, as the English official translation calls it).

Fu Shen and Yan Xiaohan aren't even in love at this point! This is at the beginning of the story, when their marriage has just been arranged by the emperor and they're still bitter rivals.

Yan Xiaohan is already protective of his future husband- later on, he also builds him a mansion meant to accommodate his disability (nerve damage in both legs, which requires a wheelchair and/or crutches). They're both incredibly powerful military generals, and the emperor was an idiot thinking an arranged marriage would humiliate them.

Of course they fall in love, of course they're a power couple, of course they send each other letters through trained geese when they're separated during the war, of course they run to each other as fast as they can across a wide cold river when they're finally reunited! Of course they're important to me!

....Aaand how about some Wangxian to wrap up this post? They need no introduction, an absolutely wonderful and complex relationship in a complex fantasy/intrigue story available in several forms - the books, the animated series (as seen above), the live action series, the audio drama, there's so much!

Some of their most beautiful moments:

Lan Wangji writing a song for Wei Wuxian and naming it Wangxian. Years after it's composed, Wei Wuxian plays it and LWJ is able to recognise him even in a different body.

LWJ begs WWX to come with him to Cloud Recesses, to safety, after WWX makes himself an enemy of the whole cultivation world for protecting innocent people.

They confront the final villain together, and work together to expose his crimes. This is also when their final love confession happens, and it's hilarious- in front of everyone's salad, WWX declares he also wanted to sleep with LWJ.

Despite censorship, the animated series was still able to allude to their wedding, showing them in red wedding robes (unfortunately can't find a gif rn)

Respectfully, if you genuinely think BL doesn't have beautiful love confessions and displays of romance, you need to find better BL.

What's a wip you want to finish but doubt you ever will? HAH okay i have an answer for this one: my steddie two night stand au!!!!! it was going to be my fic for the steddie big bang but i had to drop out of that bc irl got in the way, but i have like. at least half of the fic written already and a solid plan for the rest and i was totally loving what i had for it, and ive been DYING to write a two night stand for literally any fandom i've ever been in so i REALLY want to finish this one at some point... i hope i will!!!

What are your writing strengths? i would probably say my characterization!!! i try really really hard with that and i've gotten lots of comments that have pointed this out specifically, which makes me extra proud!

What are your writing weaknesses? i feel like sometimes when i get too in my head about things i end up, like, getting kind of repetitive, like i'll start using "smile" or describing eyes too much lol. i always try to like fix this when i edit before posting, but it's definitely something i notice myself doing.

Thoughts on dialogue in another language? i don't really have an opinion on this, like, whatever fits your fic best, so long as there's a translation somewhere that is easily accessible to the reader!

TGCF volume 1

Over on mastodon I'm participating in a group readalong of TGCF, one chapter per week, and a few weeks ago we finished the first volume of the official translation so I might as well crosspost all my thoughts over to here as like, my book review? Yeah okay here we go! Putting it all below a read more to save your dash.

PROLOGUE

I've read the whole book once before, and I just finished the prologue for this read-along, and it's fascinating to read now in the full knowledge of things that get revealed later; on my first read I absolutely did not realize how much backstory was just glossed over here!

It's fascinating how it both reads very differently and also still entirely the same when you know more!

this is one of the bits that uhhhh really strikes differently!!

[Only then did the crown prince realize that he had just encountered the Heavenly Emperor, who had personally descended to the Mortal Realm to subdue evil. The deities had already taken notice of this exceedingly outstanding God-Pleasing Warrior since his time in the Shangyuan Heavenly Ceremonial Procession. After the meeting at Yinian Bridge, they asked the Heavenly Emperor, "How does My Lord find this Royal Highness?" The Emperor answered, "This child's future is infinite."]

CHAPTER ONE

ok and now I've read chapter 1! ahhhh I just love xie lian so MUCH, what a guy, what an endless delight. Both the hint we get of wee baby newly-ascended 17 year old xie lian earnestly introducing himself to every single other heavenly official, and the current xie lian, cheerfully accepting of his misfortunes

also, this time I vow that I WILL keep Mu Qing and Feng Xin straight, no matter how much I have to work at it!

I also love in this chapter how indications given from early on that xie lian is unusually unlucky and also has no spiritual powers, but it's just breezily passed over as if it's no big deal and to be expected under the circumstances....oh ho ho

I do love how much xl and his pov just like....avoid noticing or expending attention on the things that suck in xie lian's life!

Mu Qing (tgcf) and Mu Qing (nif) have impressively divergent character vibes, to the point that I literally didn't even notice they have the same name until it was brought to my attention today!

CHAPTER TWO

Interested by the detail about how much extreme effort even a fairly well-placed lord has to go through in order to get the attention of any of the gods in heaven. Really checks out with respect to how much the heavens seem more interested in their own interpersonal dynamics than in, like, actually doing things for their followers!

It is extremely funny to me that Fu Yao is capable of criticizing the Nan Yang statue for 2 hours straight, and that that's how long it takes before Xie Lian thinks it might be time to change the subject

Kind of heartbreaking how completely Xie Lian doesn't consider that someone might be upset by seeing how injured he got from his fall from heaven! what? little ol' him might matter to someone?!

I was talking last week about how to keep track of which names go with which of Mu Qing and Feng Xin, and I'm very sad to report that my strategy does not completely hold up, because Ju Yang has a u in it, and is a name for Feng Xin. Mu Qing does not have a monopoly on u names after all :( RUDE

CHAPTER THREE

Fu Yao criticising the inefficiency of Ling Wen's palace...as if Mu Qing's palace is able to do anything useful in this situation!

Xiao-Ying is delightful. Willing and able to stand up for herself, but also happy to lend assistance to people who need help, if they were kind to her. But assistance only on her own terms!

hua cheng introduction!!

ahhhh when hua Cheng first finally encounters Xie Lian, he holds out his hand in offer, and doesn't demand or force anything. of course!

"If he was a real groom, then he'd genuinely be a most gentle and considerate one."

Xie Lian is just full of thoughts about how wonderful this mysterious person is, in character and appearance and action, despite the context of meeting him

what a meet-cute! lol

I am really loving #TGCFReadAlong ! such a good way to inspire lots of conversation about this book that I pretty much always want to talk about!

CHAPTER FOUR

I loved Xiao-Ying, how brave and how kind she is, how hard she tries to do what's right, and it's very sad that she ends up dying :(((((

This is the chapter where we get introduced to Pei Ming's womanizing misogyny. Xuan Ji....you could have done SO much better than him! What IS it that makes so many women actually attracted to him?!

But I also do wonder what it was that led Xuan Ji to such an extreme response to being abandoned and rejected by her lover. She was apparently a very capable general, previously, so what led her to all these bad decisions!

CHAPTER FIVE

I do find human face disease to be kind of a silly concept. Like it's developed in interesting ways over the course of the book but the defining symptom has always seemed just a bit silly to me.

I genuinely do not remember though how this kid ends up with human face disease though, all these centuries after the plague! too many things happen in this book lol

ahhh on first read of the book when you see xie lian's reaction to the boy's face, you're like, oh it's a combo of body horror plus fear of the plague that destroyed his home. On second read.....oh it's The Trauma.

It's so sad, too, that it means he doesn't manage to have a chill reaction to this kid who was so worried about showing his face!

on another note, I love how thoroughly hua cheng managed to trounce the 33 gods, and how thoroughly he punished them afterwards when they renege on the parameters of the challenge

it's so funny to me how it makes so much of the heaven terrified of hc, even though hc was behaving perfectly honourably. he issued a challenge and he abided by the agreements in the challenge, that's only scary if you plan to do dishonourable things yourself!

during this week's reading I went back and forth approximately a thousand times about whether Xie Lian has already recognized Feng Xin and Mu Qing or not! I just CANNOT decide. I will be keeping my eyes peeled for further clues as we continue in this book

CHAPTER SIX

it's so funny and charming how xie lian's efforts to engage with the communication array basically come down to those spammy email forward chains that old people used to send all the time!

(I suppose that that energy has been redirected to facebook or something these days?)

I'm also super charmed by how xie lian has basically made himself immune to feeling awkward about things he does. everyone else is super embarrassed for him, to be his own only worshipper, but xl is chill. And thinks "amusing himself could be fun"!

but ohhhhhh xl's inability to come up with anything to say about why he should be worshipped, when the villagers ask him about his shrine! this is what you need hua cheng for!! xl might be chill about many things but it's because his self esteem is in the basement

oh man thinking from hua cheng's perspective about this meeting between him as san lang and xie lian, it's so cute. He looks languid and carefree on the other side of the cart, seems to only start talking with xie lian out of boredom, but you KNOW how carefully he orchestrated this meeting!!! (him and his attractive legs in tight-fitting boots, which he absolutely chose to make sure he looked good for dianxia)

I've been wondering for a while already just how early on xie lian figured out the identities of fu yao and nan feng, but now I also need to remember to pay attention to how early I think he figured out san lang's identity! If he knows it right from the start, it's pretty cheeky of him to be questioning him so thoroughly about hua cheng :P

awwwwww interacting with san lang is the first time in centuries xie lian feels really embarrassed!! because san lang's good opinion actually matters to him!

CHAPTER SEVEN

I love how Xie Lian is already so sure that San Lang is going to be sticking around, that he's not just a transient part of Xie Lian's life. And throughout the chapter it's so clear how Xie Lian just likes San Lang so much!!!

he does his due diligence by testing sl and so forth, but doesn't let that stop him from simply liking and trusting sl regardless, and enjoying his mean streak too lol

and San Lang has such swagger, I love it. He makes it look like he couldn't enter the shrine with the seal on the curtain-door, but actually he just wanted the opportunity to flex. He's just like constantly showing off in this chapter, and making it clear that he doesn't care about anything except Xie Lian

Anyway it's time for the intro of the next plot arc, Banyue Pass, now that the ghost groom is resolved. Nan Feng and Fu Yao are sooo uncomfortable with the fact they're volunteering to help - whether it's bc of the specific mission or bc it's to help Xie Lian is unclear, but could well be both!

Also it's clear to me that nan feng and fu yao recognize san lang & vice versa and they're all mad about it. Xie Lian's uphill battle to get them to peacefully coexist begins!

One question I had was that earlier it seemed evident that Puqi Shrine was named after the fact that the villagers gave Xie Lian water chestnuts, but now apparently the village is named Puqi, so is the shrine just named after the village after all?

First mention of state preceptor Fangxin! If I'm remembering right, this is actually Xie Lian. Love the way that the complex parts of xl's history get seeded in from so early on without, like, making it clear what the actual situation is. This happens a lot in the book iirc, with things being casually referred to early on and then later when you get into it there's like a whole well of trauma for xl!

and one final small observation. xl's perspective on his own cooking: "unable to bear the sight of such a tragedy" ahahahaha

CHAPTER EIGHT

the ongoing attempts to unmask San Lang are sooooo funny

it reminds me a bit of the sort of fairy tale involving endless tests to try to prove that a character is actually a woman dressed as a man, which the character always passes easily but the testers are never convinced. same vibe!

the captain/general the stele is remembering is a guy who tried to keep civilians from being killed in war. this is very like the teenage Xie Lian wanting to save the common people! and Fu Yao criticises the captain's actions, which xl both expects and doesn't seem happy about :( though he doesn't say anything against Fu Yao

and then San Lang cheers Xie Lian up (who had been feeling "a bit woeful") by being mischievous and by convincing the merchants to prostrate before the stele! ahhh I love how attentive sl is, and how much he knows just what to do for xl!

and then San Lang's REACTION to xl being stung - and stung because xl was trying to protect sl! "the expression on the youth's face was /off/" and then the vibes remain off balance for the rest of the chapter and xl is toootally bewildered. what could have upset San Lang, xl???? what could it POSSIBLY have been?? don't strain yourself too hard in wondering!!

anyway I do not remember lots of what happens next in this particular arc, except BEEFLEAF and also chekov's pit of snakes, so I'm looking forward to reacquainting myself with the rest of it as we continue!

CHAPTER NINE

To start, I do not love the othering framing the narrative uses to discuss the Banyue people and language, which from what I understand ties into common stereotypes in China about northern people groups. Huge dark-skinned people who are beast-like, and the language is "ghastly, guttural, and heavy with tongue rolling." Not great.

xie lian your trauma is showing again 😭

[He stepped forward and said in a small voice, "Don't worry. If anything happens, I will go forward first." Xie Lian thought that if they all must fall, he might as well be the first one to check things out. It couldn't be worse than venomous snakes and beasts or menacing ghosts. He couldn't die from the fall, from getting beaten, from bites, or from poison. As long as it wasn't lava or fire, or some pool of corpse-dissolving water, it shouldn't be too terrible when he jumped down.]

San Lang continuing to act way too unbothered, then coolly throwing himself into the pit -- at first it seems to accomplish what xl wanted to do but couldn't (keep the mortals from having to be thrown in first) but then it becomes clear that sl is fully aware of how likely xl is to end up in the pit in short order and wants to be in there first to clean up the mess and CATCH XIE LIAN. (and then xl immediately jumps in after sl, no thoughts present, so good work there sl)

hahaha xl, head empty, taking the opportunity to feel sl up. and then he gets the opportunity to feel awkward for the first time in centuries. sl has inspired him to rediscover embarrassment!

[Maybe it was because the stench of blood here at the bottom of the pit was heavy and disorienting. Who knew what was going through Xie Lian's head, but his hands continued to roam upward until he reached a strong, hard Adam's apple. He snapped out of it in shock and immediately reprimanded himself, withdrawing his hands.]

ahh xl just finds everything about sl so attractive

["Don't worry about him," San Lang said, still holding Xie Lian tight. he made a small sidestep and spun around. In the dark, Xie Lian heard a series of fine clinking sounds: pleasant to the ear, clear and intense, swishing here and there.]

xl is sooooo not used to someone taking care of him!!!

["Why can't I get down?" Xie Lian asked in spite of himself. This guy couldn't possibly enjoy fighting while carrying someone, could he? He didn't need to go that far to look down on his opponent, did he? San Lang's answer was only two words: "It's dirty." "..." Xie Lian had never imagined that would be the answer -- and said with such seriousness too. He thought it was a little funny, but it also made him feel inexplicably strange, his chest growing slightly warm for some reason.]

SAN LANG!!!

Our first encounter with someone xl knew during his time of banishment in the mortal world! Poor Banyue had a rough childhood.

(but also: Banyue kingdom's state preceptor has the same name as the kingdom? Why was she named that? It does allow for xie lian to not realize until now who the state preceptor is, because he thinks people are referring to her by the kingdom she's state preceptor for, rather than by what her name is, but it's weird to me that she'd be named that?)

I had forgotten that xl was actually the general-captain of the memorial marker from the cave in chapter 8! I went back to reread the scene where the captain's story is told and xl's reactions are very illuminating in light of this knowledge. He's not just identifying with the captain for also being a person who wants to save everyone; he IS the captain

HMMM I'll look forward to being reminded later of what those certain reasons were! CHAPTER TEN

Now that we are at the end of it, I feel like one of the main themes in the Banyue arc is about how much the heavenly court sucks. Which like. YEAH. and WHO'S ALLOWING that unpleasant culture to flourish, hmmm jun wu?!??

(context for the third quote is that Xie Lian is worried the Wind Master will put all the blame on Preceptor Banyue to protect Pei Jr)

["I knew that for close to two hundred years there was something causing havoc, but none of the heavenly officials cared, and no one dared speak of it. So there had to be someone no one wanted to offend keeping this scandal under wraps."]

[The Upper Court wouldn't bat an eyelash at something like this; everyone needed to spill some blood if they wanted to do great things. But slaughtering a city wasn't anything glorious, after all. If the story spread too far, it would affect the number of new believers, so of course there would be some cover-ups after ascension.]

[Xie Lian relaxed. "Much ashamed! I was suspicious." "It's normal to be suspicious," the Wind Master said. "There's certainly an unpleasant culture in the Upper Court, after all."]

I love seeing Xie Lian get his first new human believer! and telling the kid his title is the Scrap Immortal - but taking so much convincing to give any name at all, and telling it in the narrative in such a sideways way that it took me a moment to realise what was even meant, lol. xl has Issues around being worshipped

and then of course I LOVE the name reveal at the end of the chapter. it's so them!!!!

CHAPTER ELEVEN

I did my reading last night for #TGCFReadAlong for this week, but what I did was take pics of the sections of text that I had thoughts and feelings about and wrote zero notes....so I am going to have to formulate my thoughts into something coherent now

In this chapter we got to explore a bit more about Xie Lian's current feelings about himself back when he was still the god-pleasing crown prince! Between his feelings about being called "Your Highness," his embarrassment at having told someone to make himself that person's reason for living, and how he reacts to the idea that he used to have as his goal in life to save the common people....it's a lot.

But I appreciate that Hua Cheng pushes back on all of these! hc calls xl "Your Highness" in complete sincerity, and tells xl that his goal was a good goal, and that it is not embarrassing for xl to be someone's reason for living. hc is just like: "you're worthy of being admired!" without ever coming on too strong about it.

It's interesting though - xie lian has complicated feelings he doesn't want to look at about Hua Cheng calling him "Your Highness" in earnest, but he flat out does not want Banyue to do the same thing.

(also, shout out to Ling Wen for not making a thing in any direction out of xie lian's title! she calls him your highness simply because that's his title and then moves on with things.)

He didn't say anything, but his arched brow raised even higher, as if waiting for Xie Lian to explain. The laughter in his eyes was apparent. of course Xie Lian couldn't explain himself. He looked at his own finger then hid it away, betraying nothing of his thoughts. "...Not bad." Hua Cheng finally burst out laughing, and he crossed his arms with his head tilted. "What's not bad? Do you mean this skin?"]

[Xie Lian was thunderstruck. He flipped over and curled into a shrimp, wishing for another pair of arms so he could cover both his face and his ears. He groaned. "...San Lang..."]

I didn't quite understand this bit though - why does hua cheng laugh in response to xie lian's reassurances about hc's appearance?

["...Well, we're sort of friends now, right? So if we're friends, then we should be honest with each other. My wanting to see your true appearance has nothing to do with how you look. I read it during my lunch break at work and my food was tastier. Spicier (innocently), if you will. spoilers under the cut because i simply cannot stop myself.

i've gushed about the potential of our would-be patroclus actor. now let's give the hypothetical achilles actor some attention.

Achilles' Reaction

THE PERSPECTIVE CHANGE????? I experienced a system reboot when I read 'to me' until I realized this is dead Patroclus' pov. I've always understood the Ancient Greek concept of shades and half-death; Hades is my favorite Greek god. That's dad right there.

But going back to it, this is officially my idea pitch to licensed, experienced showrunners: when the perspective changes, make it blurry. Like looking up at the sun when you're submerged in the ocean. You know how Good Omens always framed Aziraphale and Crowley side by side, then at the s2 finale it's so distinct, their separation? That. Do that. Frame Achilles at the edge of the screen and keep Patroclus' spot empty, now that he's gone.

Sound design, too! Two or three times in two paragraphs, it's literally written how numb Achilles felt before the Greeks returned to camp with Patroclus' body. Translate it to sound design by either reducing everything to white noise, or nature noise, or absolute silence before we cut to Achilles as realization dawns on him. But this brings me to my second point.

Achilles' scream when he realized whose corpse they're carrying. Do we silence the scream or not?

Because it'll take a passionate actor to dig up the emotion Achilles felt, and translate that emotion into such a guttural, devastated sound as he crumbles onto Patroclus' corpse. I know I sound insane when I say I heard the way Achilles screamed, reading that scene. Just trust me, bro. Think Philippa Soo as Eliza Hamilton if she wasn't a better person and decided to skin George Eacker alive.

I know the appeal of muting the scene so we just have the physical, visual emotion of the Achilles actor to go off on. I'm keeping our options open.

Obviously, for the sake of viewers' eyesight, we can't blur the entire sequence. Even if I think we need to do everything for the art. I only mean that Patroclus' tether to the mortal world is faltering, and so far blurring everything except Achilles (when he's on screen) is the only way I can think of to show-and-tell Patroclus' pov.

But that scene isn't the conclusion to Achilles' reaction. Oh no, no. Achilles lashing out at Briseis, at Thetis? Included. Achilles hunting down Hector like a dog? Included. Achilles' own death? Included. Motherfucker smiled as he died because it meant one step closer to reunite with the love of his life; are you fucking kidding me?

I've already mentioned my next point. Achilles vs Hector. Or more so Achilles hunting Hector, when there's literally a line in the book that addressed how it wasn't cowardly of Hector to avoid Achilles on the battlefield because it is a known fact that when they meet, Hector won't survive. Me personally, the rage in screaming Hector's name must parallel the devastation in screaming Patroclus'.

I aim to be so single minded, if it wasn't for this undiagnosed adhd.

The Achilles actor... God please let there be a man passionate enough about the character and comfortable enough in his sexuality to be given the role. So much justice can be done. I have no right to say I wrote the book, and the big, writer part of me wishes I did, but what I do have is imagination. I can imagine the physical transformation of Achilles in 1080p in my head, and I wish I was a part of a team that can give the fandom this content.

Let me cook for you all the slow, deliberate decay of Achilles from the moment he learned Patroclus died. Facial hair, dried blood on his skin, he probably looks like he smells awful, and yet. And yet his muscle memory in the battlefield doesn't waver, even when he wanted it to. The montage of those warriors squaring up against him and losing, that one river god squaring up against him and losing. Slowly but surely, let's frame Achilles front and center of the screen through all of it. The world revolves around him again, but this time Patroclus isn't there.

So. Patroclus dies.

I'm loud today because I visualized the emotion as vividly as I visualized the sequences. I'm a Greek myth kid so I already know the chariots, the battlefields, the clothes, etc. That's not why we're here.

We're here because live action tsoa.

Patroclus in a chariot, adorned in armor and a violence he prohibited himself to use for the past 27 years. Patroclus' body language changing in that moment, whereas the entire time beforehand he moved like the comfort person of the entire war camp. A man of medicine who becomes the golden boy of the battlefield at act 3.

I need upward camera angles on my boy the entire sequence of this fight to make him look bigger. Because he feels more than himself in that moment, doesn't he? There's literal lines of how empowered he feels, war notwithstanding. I need the bloodstained sky in the background to match the energy change in him. I need a closeup of the feral expression on his face during that short Sarpedon sequence and the wall climbing that followed afterwards.

I'll update this post when I finish reading how Achilles reacts to his boyfriend's death.

hello!! oh no worries, i happened to be looking for a distraction too so this was timely hahaha although it’s a pretty broad question since there are so many new live adaptations coming out (and some which have already come out which are featured as bromances), but let me see if I can like round this up for you a little. 

*i may be giving you a bit more than you need or like irrelevant stuff, but i guess i’m bound to hit something hahaha

Okay so the chinese BL series you’re talking about is The Untamed, and since you said you’re familiar I won’t get into it in detail, BUT just for like flow’s sake:

The Untamed (Chen Qing Ling) is based on the danmei (BL) novel written by MXTX, called Mo Dao Zu Shi (and yes however many like English translations to this title there is), or MDZS for short. You watched the live-action, and there’s like a lot of other versions of it e.g. the anime, the chibi anime, audio dramas etc. etc. the list goes on. In case you still haven’t seen any of those, just glance through this masterpost made by @the-social-recluse​ - In any case, right now everything is sort of already out EXCEPT:

Now moving on to other BL series floating around so frequently - MDZS is the second book that MXTX wrote. So there’s SVSSS (The Scum Villain’s Self-Saving-System), which is also called lovingly by others in the fandom by Scumbag System/Villain in short, this is MXTX’s first danmei novel. Right now if you’ve seen this on Tumblr, it’s the anime (donghua) version - 10 episodes only for Season 1, available on WeTV with subs, finished airing like a few weeks ago. Translations of the novel are definitely out in full somewhere.

An absolute mess, but an organized one

Strawhat-wearing scrap collector smiley angel with devoted kid-turned-adult-turned-ghost-king who follows smiley angel for like many years because he loves him. Anyway, if you’re seeing this, once again on Tumblr a lot, it’s the donghua version you’re seeing. Still airing, I think we’re midway through the whole season, the yelling starts Saturday (Asia time zone) and then extends into Sunday, sometimes Monday.

There’s like a god-tier Eng translation in full for TGCF by Suika

There is a manhua for this as well, only like 45 chapters in, but the time Jan/Feb 2021 rolls around, the donghua would have overtaken the manhua progress on the storyline HAHAHA

Apparently the director/production team who did CQL/The Untamed managed to get the rights to filming its live-action, but heh nothing much about that just yet aside from casting rumours and fans worrying that the casting will be done wrongly and also that they won’t be able to do justice to the story.

The Lost Tomb Reboot - AGAIN another special mention, because many handsome young-ish men who you know, head into tombs, much bromance. One of the male leads is known for a lot of period web dramas, and Gong Jun, the other male lead, is known for more contemporary modern dramas, but damn Gong Jun’s jawline

Winner is King (Sha Po Lang) - Another danmei novel by Priest, filming wrapped up recently as well if I recall? Posters recently released, and this is arguably Priest’s most famous and popular danmei

Immortality (Hao Yi Xing) - A super popular danmei novel called 2ha or The White Husky and His White Cat Shizun by Meat Bun. Filming also... wrapped? I think, because posters came out the next day and everyone from Earth to Pluto went mad, definitely one you should look out for next year spring i think, but I’m pretty sure there’s gonna be a hell lot more teasers, posters etc. coming up and then half of danmei Tumblr will probably go into cardiac arrest

The Society of Four Leaves (Zhang Gong An) - Ehhhh I think this hasn’t yet been filmed but casting was recently confirmed (contentiously).  Concept posters are up though. This technically isn’t classified officially as a BL. There are no CPs officially in the novel, but apparently it’s very like idk flirty etc., also slated for next year

Do you prefer canon, divergent or au?. Personally I like to stick to canon when it comes to backstory. But when it comes to rp? I'm open to change. Let's see what we can do!

How many languages do you write in?. Just English, anything else is google translated and I'm really sorry for that 😂

Where you do you get your inspiration?. I don't know a lot of the time, especially right now when I'm struggling to want to write. Used to be I could just watch or read whatever canon was available or consume whatever I associated with my specific characters. But, life has gotten in the way too much lately that it doesn't always work.

Do you write with music?. Depends on how I'm feeling. Sometimes my playlists are enough, sometimes I go and find some specific mood playlist on YouTube. How I'm feeling matters and also the tone of whatever I'm writing. But, over all typically yes.

THE.MUSES

How many characters do you write?. On this blog I have 8. Outside of here, all my FANDOMLESS and other canons? It's hard to say when you have to factor in side characters as well haha! But I have like 10 other blogs at least.

Who was your first rp muse?. The first one... Actually would be the first two. The original story my friend and I tried to write, I had two characters, Xaviee and Cassia. They were the best sort of opposites attract that I still love, even if I've long since stopped writing them.

Who is your most recent muse?. Most recent on this blog is technically Aiden Pearce of Watch Dogs, even though he hasn't been officially added yet. Before that is just another idea who also does not have a blog yet.

Which three (3) OCs do you wish got more attention?. Well... My OCs are all other blogs, I don't want to seem like I'm trying to beg for any attention there (I'm taking a break from them at the moment) but, @itsagraywcrld Eloise Gray and Cody I especially wish got more attention. And also my boi @homemadehappiness Simon Baker. I love my babies, I just need the inspiration to get back to writing the.

Which three (3) canons do you wish got more attention?. Oh god Jordi Chin, Elias Bouchard, and Zenyatta for sure. They are by far my 3 strongest and faves. Zen hasn't gotten any attention, but I've been more or less hesitant to reach out as much. I need to sort him out again.

What song always reminds you of a character? Which one?. My OCs absolutely have them, but the ones here I haven't really found yet. Aside from ones that came out of the canon material like Run Boy Run by Woodkid for Five. Sound of Silence might fit for Oliver Banks 😂

Do you have character playlists?. I'm terrible at making playlists 😂 I have Pinterest boards though.

Do you have characters you used to write, but don’t anymore?. Oh so many. Some I truly love more than others, but have no way to really know how to take them out of their respective stories. Also Tohru Honda. She's one I'd love to write again, but don't know if I will.

Any you’d love to bring out of retirement?. Mmm... Not sure about that one chief. It always depends on what I'm into. Though I will say, one that I may very well take back out is Yato. As soon as I get my butt together and finish Nor.agami.

Characters you love, but could never write?. Markus (DBH) is one. Now I don't think I NEVER could, he just doesn't mesh with my brain I guess. I'd love to try, but I really don't know if I would succeed. Or if I even should try. I'm already hesitant on Aiden Pearce.... I think my problem is main characters 😂 they are harder for me. Five is pushing that boundary just enough. Oh, writing ahead, I'd love to write like the Ma.ndalo.rian or something too, but I'm too afraid to touch anything sta.r wa.rs. I don't know enough to even try. I just love the show.... And aesthetic....

THE.SHIPS

Do you like shipping?. Yeah! Absolutely. The good, bad, and ugly.

Single or multiship?. Multiship!!!!

What was your first ship?. My very first two muses, that I mentioned above, technically would be the first ship since they were written to be together. But my first ship written with another person... Was my first Det.roit: Bec.ome Huma.n blog for Simon. I had such a wholesome ship with a Daniel whom I adored and still miss to this day and just hope they are doing well.

Which ship have you always wanted to try writing?. Right now? I wish there were some DBH blogs still around so I could write with Josh. I... Totally ship him with Simon and with Markus. But I'm open to ship him with basically anyone because it could be fun!

Are there any popular ships you love?. Well.... I love Simon/Markus for DBH, and also Markus/North wholeheartedly. Looking to Magnus Archives? Who the heck wouldn't love Jon/Martin.

Ones you hate?. Hate is a strong word... Because just because they aren't for me doesn't mean I hate them. That being said, I highly dislike Zenyatta/Genji (romantically I can't get behind it) for overwa.tch, for Magnus - Elias/Peter Lu.kas (I like the vibe of a divorced couple but not it actually being that. I just don't see it), and also for watch dogs Jordi/Aiden.

Any guilty pleasure ships?. Simon/Daniel was definitely a sort of guilty pleasure for sure. Also Simon/North? Just love?? And Elijah/Chloe. I ship them romantically as much as platonically.

Do you ship anything ‘problematic’?. I have had a truly problematic one in the past, but that's all I'll say about it.

Do you have any ships you miss?. I kinda already jumped the gun with Simon/Daniel. I haven't really had many others that didn't last or aren't with people I still talk to. I honestly haven't had too many ships in general really. At least not on the canon side of things.

Do you prefer common or rare pairs?. Oh god rare pairs. They're so much more fun.

THE.FANDOMS

How many fandoms have you written in?. Uh? Less than 10 that's for sure. I dabble mostly in fandomless work.

What was the first fandom you wrote in?. I think it was technically Fruits Basket, I do remember I did some OC writing with a friend that didn't last.

What fandom do you wish more people knew? (And tell us a bit about it!). The only one I can really think of right now is the Magnus Archives. Which, I mean, is fairly popular but it definitely deserves to be bigger. It's a horror podcast that is told through the perspective of an archivist reading first hand encounters with the paranormal. It's really well written and the sound design is BEAUTIFUL. And the fandom is pretty dedicated.

Do you like crossovers?. Yeah! As long as it plotted out and not thrown together for shits and giggles.

Which fandom have you always wanted to write in?. I'm trying desperately to write in the Watch Dogs fandom but man is it empty! Aside from that? I don't know, I don't really look at them like that.

Do you prefer animated, text, or real life media?. As long as it has a good and compelling plot to hold me, I'm game for it all.

What is your favourite genre?. I guess I love sci-fi most? I love robots... But I also love when sci-fi mixes with like - well, western is such a good one. We.stwo.rld did that beautifully, and the Mand.alori.an too oh my god. You can't tell me Mando isn't a space cowboy.

Least favourite?. Romance maybe? Like, not romantic comedy, just straight up romance. It gets so boring in my opinion

What tropes do you love?. Found family for sure, any sort of family trope. Friends or rivals to Lovers is good too. love/hate rivalries??? Frienemies??? Star crossed lovers... I like drama and fluff.

Which do you hate?. Right now I can't think of anything, but I'm sure there's something I can't stand. I don't really like purely romance to begin with, I need there to be a bit of action or drama or just more than just the two. But I wouldn't say I even hate it. Just not the top of my list.

Do you write in any dead fandoms?. I pretty much live in dead fandoms at the moment. Watch Dogs is all but buried, I don't think Magnus is very active, at least I haven't noticed it to be, and Detroit definitely died off, even the new people probably won't last without more around haha! (Not that I'm calling anyone out or anything! If you are writing I just don't see you. COME TO ME. I beg you, I want to write with you......pls...)
