i do have to say though that this is totally how i thought venom 2011 was going to go. the first like, four-ish issues got my hopes up so much. i really honestly thought it was going to be drawing parallels between symby and flash how they are ultimately just tools of the government, just weapons that can be discarded in pushing the military's agenda.

this whole page drove me insane at the time and it still kinda does. the way flash is lying directly to his superior to stay with symby longer despite how much he's been drilled that being with the symbiote too long is a danger. they aren't friends yet this early but there's still this impulse to stick with it. and it's because they're parallels!!! the symbiote is quite literally being treated as a mindless tool by the government - it's deprived of all rights that a sentient, sapient being requires. it's trapped and it's being forced into serving and fighting on behalf of a government that doesn't even care for it. likewise, flash is being given the illusion of choice, and to some extent he still does have a choice, but he's being so manipulated by the government here that really he is also just a mindless tool for them - or at least, they want him to be mindless about it. the final fucking panel at the bottom of the final page is crazy.

it was such a strong start to a run that i was very apprehensive about due to aforementioned lack of knowledge of flash as a character, and my general fed-up-ness with the way the comics had been handling venom and eddie in general during that irl time period. so i was so so hoping that it would be taking a blatant and staunch anti-military stance, or even at the bare minimum if it was even still done in a liberal way, as long as there was still SOME criticism of the military complex i would be jumping for joy. and the idea of flash and symby then also bonding during all that?!! crazy. but then it just kinda. goes off the fucking rails halfway through that run/??? like demons and hell and satan kinda off the rails. absolute bonkers. i need to reread venom 2011 actually i barely remember it it was like a fever dream to me. could have been because i descended into madness shortly after i read it but i digress

FIRST OFF: wrt cops, i am operating on TV SHOW LOGIC, not real life logic. tv show cops and irl cops are VASTLY different in the kinds of morals each set has. rl cops are deeply unethical but in the world henry spencer inhabits, this is largely not the case. since he's In There and not Out Here, i go with the show's portrayal of cops and their morals and values, instead of real life's. everything i say about cops from here on is about the show's cops, aight? aight lets go

SO the thing about having aspd and knowing on some level that you have it and somethings Different about you is that at some point you HAVE to learn How To Live In A Society Without Immidiatley Getting Ostracized. a common tactic for this is to somehow aquire a set of morals and then just Do That. it's what i personally did, and a lot of those morals came feom whatever community i was in. i liked being here, they had some set of morals, and i just adopted those and treated it as truth. over the years this process has become a lot more refined but generally my morals align with the community i find myself in- namely, queer leftists. so a LOT of my moral beliefs come with interacting with queer leftists at length (because, since i was queer, and thus interacted w a lot of leftists) and going "yeah, that makes sense, this is now a moral standard for me"

so tldnr you need to find a community with some moral tenants that you generally agree with and also like, which sounds like a no brainer but its like. a bit different yk? for me PERSONALLY there really isnt much of an internal set of checks and balances that make me agree w my morals under all costs and i can like. turn it off if i need to

but back to the spencers: being a cop is really good for this. the moral set is easy- you're a cop. you care a lot about The Law. ergo your morals are just... the laws are good and breaking tbem is bad. short and simple and to the point

additionally, being a cop means you get to engage in risk taking behavior and get PAID for it! people dont think youre a crazy reckless thrill seeker, they think you're a HERO! and who needs remorse when you're dealing with criminals? you dont NEED to feel bad about power tripping or intimidating them, its totally fine. its fine. its fine

also relationship issues- henry's divorced, that's not uncommon for pwaspd in relationships. sometimes its poorly managed and/or they wont change and even if theyre stable enough not to be dangerous or abusive, it could be an unpleasant experience for a lot of different reasons- arguments being a massive problem when they happen (the remorse thing- good luck actually getting an apology outta them), worry over the risky behavior being met with flippiance, general lack of emotional vunerability. stuff like that

all this btw is based off my real relationship struggles between me and my fiance who does NOT have aspd (we r like... total opposites its so funny. top 10 funniest matchups of all time)

back to shawn. he is a lot like his father in many ways but the main reason i thought he had aspd is just... he treats EVERYTHING with flippiance and sarcasm. even when hes locking in and being serious, there's still an underlying feeling that he's Just Having Fun With This, no matter the situation. which, this isnt like an official criterion or whatever, but like... i know a LOT of guys with aspd. most of them talk like this. there's always a sense of emotional detachment from most things, because there is one, because they have aspd. i jokingly call this the "sociopath lilt" because theres also that sort of, up-and-down inflection (that shawn has!) that comes with it. its so funny it just makes other pwaspd instantly clockable to me. get thin sliced loser

but once i started thinking about it, more things add up... he's CALLED OUT on his risk taking behavior and flippiance towards serious subject matter IN THE SHOW! he's had a ton of jobs and while i can't prove why he kept leaving them, aspd and having a job... don't mix well. i keep getting fired because i keep beefing w my manager, and i can see the same thing happening to shawn, or maybe he broke a rule one too many times, or got caught in a restricted area, or broke something thru carelessness

and it IS played for comedy but he very often tends to not respect the wishes and autonomy of the people he interacts with, ESPECIALLY gus. he cares naught for anything gus has going on with his job and wether or not he'll get in trouble if he leaves early or does whatever scheme shawn cooked up, and generally sort of treats him not very kindly a lot- which isnt to say their friendship is BAD, its just a pattern of behavior yk?

thats all i can think of off the top of my head rn, but yeah imo shawn is a very realistic take on a guy with aspd whos just like. a regular guy with a mental illness thats to some degree managed, some degree not. very "adhd kid went thru some shit and developed aspd" coded (theres a link; if you abuse a kid with adhd theres a HUGE chance theyll develop conduct disorder and later aspd) (also i guess "some shit" for shawn was the divorce and also being raised by a guy with aspd and being influenced by how he thought a lot)

left my phone on the desk and i dont feel like getting up to text u so it comes in the ask box instead but basically i have a larger problem with current d20 in this way of like. ok i think fhsy was an anomaly in terms of the way d20 was done; it was only one play session per week, and there was time to see the (small fandom) response in between episodes and marinate on plot beats and such. the way d20 is done now (and has been for a good while) is that they pump out a ton of it in a short span (the rpdr problem. girl i dont need another season the last one JUST ended) & it has become largely formulaic.

d20 was never truly pushing the boundaries of actual play and has had problems since its conception -- problems that largely were ignored bc they were noobs, the fandom was new, and the collegehumor->dropout transition was new.

when we now get an intrepid heroes season its essentially fan service. as much as i love TUC (tho i have a lot to criticize abt TUC) and the original FH hit a lot of notes for me, there's just simply better actual play out there that isnt swallowing the wotc boot and are filled with new voices who are choosing to be in the space to very little return...

i enjoy dropout. i miss the scripted content a lot, and i enjoy game changer and the occasional um actually. i think falling victim to nostalgia is not always a good thing, and i try to be critical of the ways in which i think of certain media as "the good ol' days".....i think d20 can take a lot of lessons from other actual play media tho. and while i dont hate everything thats come out in the past year from them, i dont love it either, and thats fine. theres a lot of (looks up at the wall of text) WHOA. ok i think you get the point. (this is the point at which i added paragraph breaks)

Hmmmm well I dunno while I agree with you on some points I don't feel like this is a d20-wide problem inasmuch as it is a d20 main cast problem; I say that because the non-main cast episodes are much less formulaic since they generally have varying episode lengths/different play systems/different styles of episodes that aren't story-battle. And I would say that like, I don't think d20 was ever trying to market itself as revolutionary as much as fans began to approach them that way. The way I remember it is d20 was pitched as comedians telling 'shorter form' actual play stories. Different in the actual play landscape, yes, but not revolutionary imo! My problems w d20/the main cast aren't really affected by their place in the wider, like, actual play landscape since I think there's a pretty big diversity of stories being told in d20 and dropout as a whole. If it was marketing itself as a singular campaign I think things would be different, but the fact that I can pick up and put down different shows makes me feels like criticisms of it should be more specific to specific shows if that makes sense.

I guess most of my problems with d20 are aimed at a different place than yours, which is totally fine! I think my problems come down to a case by case(cast by cast?) basis more than any overarching problems with d20 the 'franchise' since I haven't seen much that's formulaic in the way that main cast d20 sort of 'has' to be. And I do think a lot of that is because of the fans more than anything, as well as the way playing with the same people makes you stagnate!

🧥 COAT: What’s their style like? Do they put a lot of effort into what they wear?

Tobias always goes comfort first whenever he chooses his clothes & shoes! He dislikes everything that is fitted (excluding some turtlenecks) and prefers oversized clothes all the time. His favorites are sweaters, turtlenecks and collared shirts, but he also has two hoodies he wears every now and then. Most of his pants are high-waisted, and he enjoys tapered or straight pants, but could also use wide leg ones. He also likes joggers, specifically the ones that could fall under the smart casual category. Toby dislikes jeans very much and feels uncomfortable in them ajdjjfkfkfk

He has a few fits he uses as loungewear and it's usually some light green/grey/brown shirts and shorts. His pajamas are usually just short sleeved big shirt and shorts.

He's not really into accessories and if he ever picks something it's some warm scarf or sunglasses, depending on the need + the weather. Toby has a beige tote bag with yellow leather bottom, and he also embroidered small stars on it at some point. They shine a little in direct sunlight :]

Toby really likes long trench coats and has a dark grey one. He also has a duffle coat for more colder weather. In other situations that require a coat, he mostly uses his leather jacket.

Toby's overly optimistic, cheerful and may act too naive or hopeful in bad situations which tends to annoy people. He's also not afraid of saying his opinions and telling someone that he thinks they were rude or did something bad.

His preferences for justice and ethics has also closed many doors in front of him bc people simply don't want to deal w him and his complaints NNFNFBCBC

His other personality flaws include great amount of people pleasing (it's Bad) and being somewhat disorganized and prone to procrastination.

🪹 EMPTY NEST: When did they move out of their family home, if ever? What was the relationship with their family like?

When he was 17!!! He was in his senior year of bachelor's degree and basically presented his theory about this one specific miracle drug idea that could be used in emergencies with life threating injuries, and this one corporation was like "hey what a cool idea come work in our lab to see if it works and also get a doctorate at the same time" and Toby was like "okay yay". WELL his mom was like "Um no you are going to med school" and so they have this big argument where he just basically says how tired he is of his parents controlling his life and doing big choices for him all the time, and his mom is all like "i mean if you don't want to aim high to be a cool doctor then you're not a part of family" to try and pressure him into agreeing, and instead he was like "well okay" and just left. He then reached out to the corporation abt the job and went to work there for a few years. He did get his doctorate and the top surgery & hrt they promised as an employee benefit but, oh boy, at what cost.

ANYWAY ENOUGH ABOUT THAT! Let's talk about Tobias and his family. His mom (Claudia) and dad (Oliver) are both doctors who met and married during med school. When Toby was 6, they divorced bc of several reasons, which was kinda bad for Toby bc unlike his Claudia, Oliver was always chill and supportive. Claudia then remarried with a guy she was seeing even before the divorce, also a med school guy who was studying with her on the surgeon specialization thing or whatever it's called. This guy really didn't care about Tobias other than, like, watching after him when his mom wasn't home.

Claudia is a very demanding person and always tends to think that everyone should aim high and not doing so bad. But she also had this dream of becoming a famous figure skater and since that did not work out for her, she chose to make little Toby into one. And so, Toby ended up going to figure skating classes five times a week, and studying all the other free time he had since he 1) started early and 2) got to skip like four school years bc of his skills and knowledge. Basically everything that was happening in his life was his mom's decisions and honestly he did not like that at all but hey, what can you do?

She also constantly demanded him to do his best in basically everything and got really upset if he got an average/a bit better than average grade, and honestly even the best grades weren't really enough for her :/

Once he got into the Skating Accident (tm) when he was 15, thanks to Frank, and managed to get his ass out of figure skating field, his mom basically sent him to university since he now had "more time to study" (which Toby would've rather used for fun hobbies, of, you know, finally getting friends). And sooooo Toby was kinda living alone on campus and visited his home every now and then. Then when he graduated the whole argument happened and he just, well, left.

Basically, to sum up: he really dislikes his mother and doesn't really care about his stepfather bc he doesn't care about Tobias either. He hasn't talked to them ever since he left and is quite content with that.

As for Oliver? Claudia cut all the ties to him and Tobias basically never saw him again, at least until he was 40. Toby got into a really bad emergency situation bc of his last Earth job and corporate sent special emergency medics (let's be honest they sent it only bc Toby is Klara's husband) who always have a anesthesiology specialist with them. Who was the specialist that time, you ask? Oliver. What a fun family reunion haha

ANYWAY they are slowly catching up with all the years they haven't seen each other, and Tobias is kinda happy.

LMAO long hair era Toby definitely did try them at least once or twice? I don't think he remembers that much from it bc he barely remembers anything from that time due to all other substances he took, but I'd say he probably didn't have any strong effects and propbably just passed out.

OOOOOH I think I never mentioned it but I actually picked a voiceclaim for Toby! It's T. J. Thyne, specifically the way he voices Morlund in Horizon: Forbidden West :3

He doesn't really have a specific accent but he definitely uses tons of filler words and kinda mixes up words quite often, and sometimes ends up freezing while talking to think of the right word or remember what word he is supposed to. Life of a stressed multilingual dumbass.

Fun fact: Tobias would Never go to karaoke, he does Not like singing, especially in front of others. That said, if he was forced to, or, well, let's say he hypothetically agrees, then he would probably choose some song he knows he's able to sing and which he knows very well. If he lived in a modern world he would probably pick Personal Jesus by Depeche Mode.

He lives in an apartment!!! He prefers apartments so much more than living in a house (his childhood home was a two floor house and god he hated it soooo much for some reason).

Back when Toby was living alone, he usually went for small studio-like flats bc he likes to have an open space. Now that they live with Klara they have (read: rent bc no one w their salary can afford own apartment 😳) a loft.

like, i liked michelle's episode/storyline in s1, bc the blinding novelty of a woman instigating a divorce not being the Actual Devil, as well as a just. generally very empathetic + nuanced take on how divorce shakes out between two ppl who really care for each other, was so 'WAIT TV CAN DO THIS??' that i felt satisfied with that being Her Arc™. divorce happens, life happens, people fall out of love, and it hurts but its ultimately okay. the show, at the time, was ultimately abt a football club and how caring abt that football club helped everyone around it.

but then the show sticks around, and her continued absence just... raises a lot of questions? how did the conversation abt ted going overseas happen? what conversations did they have abt henry? how long term was it intended to be? did money really not factor into it all? like it's one thing for a character's backstory to be vague when it's not really the focus of attention (s1 was ultimately rebecca's story before anyone else's), but when it's the load bearing stone of their '''''''arc''''''' in s3...????

like. god. and then it fucking infects every other woman on the show!

sassy + nora? well sure we'll give you a softball - you can have one (1) scene where a woman is able to resolutely and firmly reject a man asking her out without immediately being seen as cruel or gameplayey (not that the audience will see it that way! she's already a lecherous temptress for them!), but neither of them will ever be able to speak to rebecca onscreen again, even after the heart-wrenching scenes in s1 CLEARLY establishing them as a beating heart of rebecca's arc.

shandy? nope, don't even think abt her motivations/drives, just forget her. simi? LMAOOO imagine a black woman getting a personality beyond righteous anger. jack? three-four episodes, and we learn so little abt her that her conflict with keeley - which SHOULD'VE have been a huge emotional beat - just feels like a kick in the teeth (and while, yes, i absolutely agree that in a real world context, jack's rejection of keeley would be largely motivated by class, in Ted Lasso Land™ rebecca is just as rich - if not richer? - and we're never once encouraged to interrogate her priorities).

barbara's the one that really makes me miserable, bc i feel like on a show with less run time, she could've played REALLY well. she's a great contrast to keeley, has an amazing delivery, and the scene where keeley + her first discuss the snowglobes shows that she has the potential for some really moving vulnerability + pathos. but instead they give SO many of keeley's scenes to characters who ultimately get written out, so when barbara stays it's like... okay? sure? like, i was so stoked that barbara survived the Mass Exodus of side characters that i didn't wanna look the gift horse in the mouth but... wasn't the last thing we saw of her and keeley's relationship like. general resentment + distrust abt the shandy debacle? when did that improve? how???

i don't think i'll ever have enough mental real estate to explain how disappointed keeley + rebecca's 'arcs' in s3 made me, and at least there's the saving grace that. virtually no one other than jamie got a coherent arc this season, so at least it was on some levels an egalitarian screw up. but fuck dude. keeley was just forced to react to bad things that were happening to her, and we got to see her do her job (which, unbelievably, does actually involve things other than being an awkward manager!) precisely one (1) time.

i even like rebecca's arc on paper - i think it's really cool to see a character backslide so intensely in terms of obsessing over and struggling to come to terms w a past relationship, especially an abusive one, bc like. yeah! that shit sticks with you for longer than a season! and beyond that, seeing her regain her sense of self and what SHE actually gives a shit about was oftentimes just as sweet as s1. but her scenes were poorly connected, and she had to carry WAY too much of a burden as the Resident Speech Giver for any of her internal characterisation to make sense. like, sorry, but it's kind of hard to believe a character's Going Through It™ when they have to spent near 100% of their screen time giving Take It From Me, Kid, speeches. and then she's not even given a real opportunity TO fuck up + sabotage her relationships, even when she starts getting really weird w ted! it's all just so meaningless and like nothing that she does is ever going to matter. she never speaks to zava again, we don't get to see her interact w bex or kate, her pleas to ted get COMPLETELY shut down...

but the thing that REALLY makes me sick is this complete lack of interiority absolutely butchers the characters of jade + jane, who are otherwise RIFE with potential. like, jade is a completely unflinching, unapologetic asshole to nate + his family, and that's never interrogated. even in Sitcom Land™, it's more than reasonable to view jade's actions as racist, especially when she doesn't give the same treatment to others (at least not as i recall? honestly i usually watch the taste of athens scenes while peeking out behind my hands, so i could 100% be wrong here). and yet, suddenly, and completely inexplicably, she's charmed by nate. she wants to give him the time of day. she finds him attractive, and wants to date him, and generally take control of his life and force him into a decision that is literally the exact opposite of what he expressed wanting to do. except even that LAST thing isn't allowed to be interrogated, bc god FORBID a woman is enough of a fully realised creation to actually be culpable of the terrible shit they do!
