Speaking of big money polish- what are your thoughts on exo?

i thought on this question for a while because it's very open ended and honestly i wasn't sure what direction to come at it, because aside from the typical gripes about sm styling fuckups, i like exo a lot. i haven't followed them that closely in the past because they are so omnipresent that i didn't need to, but i like most of their discography and their power concept is silly and cute and they undoubtedly defined what kpop looked like in the mid 2010s.

but! you mentioned in that followup ask about how you still enjoy exo even though blackpink and bts make you uncomfortable, and i think there's a couple reasons for that. firstly is well. exo's music is better. secondly, exo doesn't have that same level of 'big money polish' as bts or blackpink. sm, for lack of any better way to phrase it, doesn't actually care about if their mvs look expensive. they are expensive, obviously, because mvs of this caliber always are, but sm whittles down as cheaply as they can go without totally compromising the quality of the mvs, because they care about profits, not about showing off their wealth. they're a big company that has literally shaped the industry, they don't have anything to prove, but for a company like hybe? their mvs look expensive specifically for the purpose of braggadocio.

here's an example from approximately the same time frame (2016):

blackpink's boombayah mv has at least three custom large studio sets and at least one physical location, all of which have been fairly rigourously set decced and rigged with lights. the video also has some pretty dramatic colour grading and editing.

bts' fire mv has between two and five extensively decorated location shots (i'm fairly certain all the interior shots are done in the same warehouse). there's a large amount of pyrotechnics including both a flaming car AND a flaming stunt performer. the 'exterior' shots are all filmed on a massive custom studio set. there's a significant use of boom crane shots to show just exactly how big the set is.

exo's monster mv has one custom medium sized studio set, some half-sets in a white box, and one location (the airport hanger + tarmac) that has no set dec.

post-2015 sm ironed out a formula for exo mvs that consequently has stuck around for most their group mvs now. they shoot primarly on the same standard lenses, the shots are generally structured the same, the locations are usually outdoors or in a mostly empty studio with very little surrounding decoration, they use a lot of 'texture' shots (small scale shots of specific objects/actions/environments), and they tend towards very simple and naturalistic colour grading/editing. even for some of the more 'experimental' ones like kokobop or even recently, shinee's atlantis, there's still a lot of visual blank space in sm mvs. and sm mvs tend to feel more 'authentic' because of immersion; the locations used feel very realistic because they are real spaces with very little is done to alter them, so although there's a level of surrealism to kpop in general, it's more understandable and easy for our eyes to see a more relatable and familiar location. there's more opportunity for the viewer to focus on the idols themselves rather than be overwhelmed with trying to parse where and what the surroundings are, which is what can happen with mvs filmed on a lot of big custom studio sets. call me baby is just a bunch of guys dancing in a garage, and you know what that is? greased lightning.

that's not to say that all mvs that go more for a more holistic design approach are doomed to look 'unrealistic' or fake. sm has produced some very good ones: married to the music, view, lucky one, power, love me right, most of red velvet's mvs, countless/good evening/i want you, heartbreak, bad love, thank u, maniac, peaches, taeyeon's new mv for can't control myself. but what makes a lot of these mvs more successful than most bts or blackpink mvs is that there's still a kernel of realism and consistency in the design. the thing that will happen with a constructed 'realistic' set is that it will often fall directly into the uncanny valley depending on how it's used, and that doesn't help anything if you aren't on purpose trying to create an actually surrealistic mv. bts mvs are particularly prone to this because in addition to building a lot of their sets, they shoot with a small focal point, really high depth of field, and tend to use low contrast colour grading, which makes the videos look like well posed instagram photos; very constructed and composed, but ultimately flat. versus with sm, where they rarely build a 'realistic' fake set without intending for it to be surrealistic in the first place. see: maniac, countless, bad love, lucky one, can't control myself. if they need to use a real place, they just use a real place. see: heartbreak, married to the music, view, love me right. they're not building whole exteriors of movie theatres and full diner studio sets for a single mv, like hybe did for boy with luv. also a lot of these sm mvs have specific concepts and/or storylines that are directly tied to the design and the design execution. if a comeback doesn't have as developed of a concept, it usually gets the standard treatment, but if there's a strong creative drive (either from the artist or from the creative team they've brought in) there's more cohesion.

i'm sorry this became only tangentally about exo, but i hope this maybe answers some of your questions about why exo doesn't feel the same as the other non-sm groups of its scale.

I did not know what I was doing was in fact disassociating. I wanted to be famous so bad so I would day dream all day about meeting my faves like chris brown, Rihanna, Nicki. hell even marrying drake. 

I pictured my life as a famous woman getting awards, breaking records, lol. I had a whole dream on being the biggest superstar in the world! while suffering trying to write a song. like really suffering. my brain could not take that. 

now It just flows. but I dont force it.

the following is some canon facts sprinkled in with mostly my own headcanons and opinions. but i’m right about everything. cw for mentions of trauma and aa6 spoilers.

i should actually start this by saying that i see a lot of polycule dhurke/amara/jove or dhurke/amara/datz and while it is cute i feel a bit weird about using a poly relationship as just a “oh he has two hands” solution to love triangles. not that poly relationships aren’t valid, but it’s usually just people putting characters together without thinking about how the dynamic would even function. as if a polycule is a band-aid solution.

but that’s not important because this essay is about why dhurke and amara should just be friends (post SOJ)

i do not respect capcom or its canon, but here’s a bunch of canonical soj facts that are kinda fucked up;      - when nahyuta is born, amara is 19 and dhurke is 20      - when the palace fire breaks out, amara is 21 and dhurke is 22      - there’s a gap of approximately 8 years of time where dhurke thinks amara is dead before they reunite and have rayfa (they’re each around the age of 30 at the time)      - there’s a period of time anywhere from 9 months - 1 year that they’re living together again before rayfa and amara are both kidnapped      - following this, dhurke never sees his wife ever again

because i have extreme brainrot, i sat down and feasibly considered the amount of time they would’ve been together. like, genuinely face to face together. if you only take into account the numbers the game gives you, then that means out of 25 years of marriage, they only see each other for about 3 of them. i tend to tack on an extra year or so for dating, but that’s still a really short amount of time, with almost all of it being before the palace fire ever happened. not to mention, they married incredibly young, and amara is royalty. typically royal families will push for children to be wed as soon as they come of age. 

there’s also the fact that canonically, dhurke was not wealthy to any degree. he mentions in a throw away line having a bunch of weird odd jobs including both farmer and street performer (side note, street performer dhurke is hilarious). considering amara was basically hailed as a goddess by virtue of existing, i kind of doubt they were childhood friends or anything before that. my own hcs for how they met and got married initially tend to fall into a romeo and juliet style of mushy romance. plucky lawyer steals the heart of the queen with his humble charm and promises to whisk her away kind of thing. idk i do actually think they were very in love when they were younger, and maybe like... TOO in love, but my essay and thoughts tend to skew towards characterization through how the two of them grow through their traumas. so let’s just go in order of events here;

the palace fire

i do not care what capcom tries to tell me, dhurke has burns. if amara has a giant chest mark from being in the fire for a very short amount of time, dhurke would have full body burns from literally breaking into and out of a burning building. do you know how hot fire is? it’s fucking hot. it’s also genuinely terrifying. my point is i hc dhurke has some form of pyrophobia.

the years after the palace fire and before rayfa is born aren’t given much canon information, but it is stated that amara is convinced dhurke was out to kill her and willingly lives in the palace outside of the public eye. she’s convinced that dhurke is evil and was trying to kill her for at least twice as long as they were married. that kind of skews your perception of a person, no matter how much you might have once loved them. even if you STILL love them, it’s different. feelings change with time, and i think that’s a really fun thing to explore in fiction. 

the rescue/rayfa’s birth

so here’s where i add the drama. just sprinkle it in. there’s a very sneaky line in the game that they kind of slip in during dhurke’s recounting of events around the time rayfa was born, and i have not stopped thinking about it for 2 years.

so plot wise, when apollo presses dhurke about lying about amara being dead, he talks about how he (somehow) got a tip that amara was alive and still being held in the palace. he broke in to save her and potentially run away with her, datz, and and nahyuta into safety, but they add something else in there. dhurke has a moment where he says she didn’t initially believe his innocence. and it’s kind of just played as a joke.

but because i like conflict and i do not write dhurke the same hyper-toxic-masculine way they do in canon because i think Men Should Be Allowed To Have Feelings i thought. man that must fucking suck. everyone in the entire kingdom thinks he’s the devil, and the one person he’s been doing it all for the sake of - his wife - initially doubts his innocence. of course this is obviously an understandable response. she was basically trapped and gaslit for nearly a full decade over an event that nearly cost her her own life (and would have to instead come to terms with the fact her own sister wanted her dead) but like it still. it would still suck to hear that from your spouse?

they were together for under a year, and in this time rayfa was born. this is probably my favorite window of time to explore a dhurke and amara relationship adapting because they would be such different people now. time already effects how you personally grow and adapt, but the kind of horrors they went to would drastically change them both. neither of them would be the same kids they fell in love with, and dhurke had just shipped one of his kids to america in an attempt to protect him. he’d already be down bad, but to have to deal with that, his wife not fully trusting him, nahyuta not knowing their own mother and most likely not trusting her initially, and also an entire pregnancy... that’d be an incredible amount of stress, on top of the fact they’re both living under the law. 

(sidebar; because of how weird they had to twist the timeline to make it so apollo was gone before rayfa was born so they never met, i tend to headcanon this as dhurke trying to send both his kids to america to protect them, but not being able to initially send nahyuta because of their royalty status, and it quickly becoming too late.)

something else that confused me was why the hell they’d even have another kid while they’re both trying to save themselves, and that... uh. okay maybe this is an unpopular thing to say in terms of headcanon, but i actually believe rayfa was an accidental birth. like logistically, if you see your wife for the first time in almost a decade, you’re going to do Something. and you don’t have protection in the mountains. i’m just. i’m just saying.

but all of that being said, more than anything, i think they’d still be in love during this point. or more accurately, i think they’d be trying to convince themselves they’re still in love. they wouldn’t be the same people anymore, but the only thing dhurke has left is his family. it’s the thing he’s fighting for, and amara would have just been told she can’t go back to her sister for her own safety. there’s this kind of pressure to stay together for both themselves and their kids. there’s also a part where dhurke implies that the two of them were planning on trying to escape khura’in together and cross country lines before shit hits the fan.

turnabout revolution

so if you’re a coward who actually considers canon, after rayfa and amara get kidnapped, dhurke never sees them again. sure, he gets spirit channeled by amara in the final trial, but he never sees her face to face, or gets a chance to speak with her. if you’re like me and simply refuse to believe your favorite characters die, then that means there’s a 14 year gap between the next time dhurke and amara speak to each other.

what’s the first thing amara does when they see each other again? accuse him of murder.

in fairness, she’s under threat of blackmail to do so. she’s trying to protect both her children at this point, and clearly had a role to play in inga’s murder herself that she doesn’t want to admit to. but at the same time, when apollo reveals that dhurke was actively hiding evidence because he still loved her, she seemed genuinely surprised. this revelation is the thing that gets her to actually go against ga’ran’s plot. there’s also the obvious point of her picking her children’s safety over dhurke’s entire revolution, and what he’s been working on for her sake for most of his life. and honestly I thinks she made the right and most understandable choice. the real part that makes me think they wouldn’t get back together after the events of soj (provided dhurke isn’t an epic ghost guy) is,

amara chooses her own safety over dhurke’s, while dhurke chooses her safety over his own.

dhurke’s a very hopeful character, a very jovial one. throughout all his screen time, there’s no point where he genuinely thinks nahyuta has betrayed him. there’s no point where he thinks apollo isn’t capable of handling the case without him. he clearly cares a lot about his family, and would do anything for them. this includes amara. he’s not asked to hide evidence for her sake, he just does it. at the risk of undermining his entire revolution and destroying it entirely, he tries to hide evidence that’d implicate his wife of murder.

amara’s more of a realist. she doesn’t give up information until she absolutely has to. she doesn’t even admit to loving dhurke until the last moment she’s on screen. the only lines in the game she has as herself are during the trial, and half the time she’s just telling everyone how horrible and awful and terrible her husband was. and again, i must say, this would probably suck to hear.

the aftermath

the country is kind of a little fucked after soj. sure, it ends on a positive note, kind of, but there’s both a lot of political stuff to fix. and a lot of family stuff to fix. dhurke basically has to rebuild his relationship with every single one of his family members (and in rayfa’s case, from scratch). while I do think marriage is important and stuff, I don’t think it’d be... the most important.

what i’m saying is i think they’d be friends. even if they stayed married, they’d have to relearn almost everything about each other. they haven’t seen each other in forever, and also amara just threw dhurke under the bus. that’d sting! i think he’d forgive her for that, but it’d sting. knowing your partner would have willingly let you and your entire cause go up in flames sucks. it all sucks. soj is a very downer aa game.

and also i value m/f friendship a lot. i value older adult relationships a lot. i value exploring unfortunate and uncomfortable themes in learning to grow as a person and dealing with your own trauma a lot. i think there’s a lot to explore in characters like dhurke and amara. alot of people prefer thinking about the relationships between nahyuta and apollo and rayfa as siblings, which is great! but... i don’t know. i really like fictional dads. i like thinking about him getting more time with his kids. i like thinking about amara learning to become a person instead of a revered goddess. i like them becoming real people instead of just figureheads in a political war.

also i think dhurke and datz should kiss because they raised kids together in the mountains for 20 years

001: Pyre

Favorite character: This is a fairly close one among the top three, but I’d say Ti’zo followed by Jodi and the Moon-Touched Girl in some order. I tend to dislike little mascot animal characters, but Ti’zo is an exception. He looks like a bat and he has so much attitude. He can be cute or he can be a little cuss, but there are also moments where you feel the weight of how long he’s lived and the people he’s lost. At one point in the game, I was wondering if he might be one of the Scribes or even a god in disguise. (It was the way the Voice reacted when I first put him in a rite. I knew something was up with this imp.) I also love that you see him with so many close bonds with different members of the cast, from old friends like Oralech to newcomers like the Moon-Touched Girl. The combination of him being ancient and scrappy as well as very small and cuddly works for me.

Least favorite character: Keeping it to the main cast, I’m going to say Sir Gilman. I don’t hate him, but he doesn’t interest me as much and his style of play frustrated me.

5 Favorite Ships (canon or non-canon): I don’t have any real ships for this game. I thought Jodariel’s and Ignarius’ scenes were endearing and funny, but I wouldn’t say I’m committed to the ship. 

Character I Find Most Attractive: Celeste. My goodness, what a beautiful character design. Elegant but superhuman and powerful. I also think Tamitha and Oralech have really cool looks.

Character I would marry: I think I could do a lot worse than Hedwyn. He’s hardworking and decent, and he has a great smile.

Character I would be best friends with: I can only hope Ti’zo would want to be friends with me.

a random thought: I also love that big drive imp that sits by the door of the blackwagon. I may have beeped it every time I went in.

An unpopular opinion: I think it’s better than Bastion. For me, the larger cast and clearer narrative arc worked better. The interplay with the main villain is so uniquely handled. The visuals are punchier. I enjoyed the gameplay more. But this is so subjective, and absolutely not a hill I would die on.

My Canon OTP: Don’t have one.

My Non-canon OTP: *cough* You mean that specific headspace where I take that unofficial Jen Zee art of the Transistor characters in rites robes and start shipping Red and Boxer in a Pyre AU?

Most Badass Character: Jodariel. She’s strong, her emotions run deep, she learns from her mistakes, she unobtrusively takes care of people.

Most Epic Villain: I mean, I do really love the Voice. Not as in I would ever want to know the Voice, but as a character and plot device. Like they did with Rucks and the Boxer, the team did such a good job establishing a rapport with this unseen, barely-known character and the game’s protagonist, and then the actual player as well. You hear this hammily imperious voice and you want to know more. It helps that the Voice has a lot of variety in his reactions – pleasure, contempt, confusion, even a (very entitled) sense of hurt betrayal when you don’t dance to his tune.

Pairing I am not a fan of: I can’t think of one that bothers me especially, certainly not one that I’ve seen enough to be annoyed by.

Character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): I don’t think the game fails any of its characters. I would’ve liked to have seen more with/about Celeste, because her motives and attitude are very shadowy. I think she’s meant to be remote, ancient, mysterious, but she also comes across as having little context. So when her character does develop, there wasn’t a lot of payoff for me.

Favorite Friendship: Leaving out the ones involving the Reader, I’ll say Moon-touched girl and Ti’zo. I would’ve liked to see more with Hedwyn and Jodariel, given their backstory.

Character I Most Identify With: I’m going a bit in circles as I try to decide. I could say the Voice because I do love to lecture, but I’m going to think better of myself and tentatively say Jodi. I’m not strong and badass and I’m terrible at basketball. But, like her, I can be a little suspicious and withdrawn, but I do actually care about people, and once you’ve known me for like ten years I start to warm up and be emotionally present. And, like Jodi, I would like to spend my free time brushing the drive imps.

Character I Wish I Could Be: I would certainly like to be hardworking and brave and humble like Hedwyn.

003: The Moon-touched Girl

(Whom I will call Bae, because the game told me that couldn’t possibly be her name, so I said that it was.)

How I feel about this character: In some ways, I feel she’s a little precious. Wide-eyed and innocent and spiritual. Deeply isolated and traumatized, but not in any way that makes it difficult to be around her. She’s very idealized. But at the same time, I find her very endearing. Her dialogue highlights the unusual speech patterns they used for this game. Her design is delicate and otherworldly, but also sharp-edged and energetic, and she has those blazing red eyes. She’s been through so much, and I love seeing her making connections and finding her family with the other characters. Also, she was my absolute favorite character to play as and I never let her go. Which is fine, because even in the Downside, she’s learned to be happy.

Any/all the people I ship romantically with this character: No one especially. That could maybe be in her future, but I don’t think she’s looking for it right now.

My favorite non-romantic relationship for this character: Ti’zo, though thinking about it, maybe Jodariel actually. That scene where she hugs Bae is such a vivid moment.

My unpopular opinion about this character: Possibly what I said above, about her being too good to be true.

One thing I wish would happen/had happened with this character in canon: Nothing that comes to mind except maybe to have her history be dealt with more realistically. It might’ve been too much for the story to go into without sidetracking the plot.

Favorite friendship for this character: Possibly Jodariel’s edging out Ti’zo here. Though on the other hand, Bae and Ti’zo have more of an equalized relationship, without any parental overtones. So Ti’zo and Bae.

My crossover ship: This is a bit obscure, but I might be able to see her with someone like Rudy from the original Wild Arms. Like Bae, he’s been forced to spend a lot of his life on the outskirts, and he’s also spent most of his years wandering. Bae comes across as very assured and secure in herself, so I wouldn’t assume she’d gravitate towards an older mentorlike figure. Rudy has a similar open-hearted youthfulness to Bae. Once she learned about the dark, dangerous issues surrounding him, I don’t think she’d be fazed. Rudy would be stunned by her nonjudgmental acceptance, and she’d have a steady, sure-footed partner who could roll with her eccentricities.

Teen Titans Spotlight #11: The Brotherhood of Evil

Judging by the last few issues starring Robotman, Beast Boy, Mento, and the Brotherhood of Evil, this series could have been Doom Patrol Spotlight On:.

Warp might be the most intelligent super villain in the DC Universe!

Actually I'm not quite done not talking about The Brotherhood of Evil! I don't mean to suggest that the people who fled one kind of oppression weren't the best and kindest people in the world! The only reason I said all the awesome people wound up in California is because I'm from California and my family is pretty awesome. Don't worry! I can see all of the erasure in the above statement! It's just sometimes, you're speaking about a thing and you can't get bogged down by small details like Native American genocide or blatant anti-Chinese laws enacted in San Francisco (pretty much the coolest place in the U.S. (at least before the tech boom fucking turned it into a capitalist fascist run by tech start-ups and the angels who finance them)). The main point was that some people become comfortable with a status quo that oppresses others. And instead of fighting it, people flee from it. The people who flee often do so because they have their own status quo they want to enact and it's rarely one that provides opportunity for everybody. At least in the modern view, I tend to think (and hope it's more than hope and fantasy and wishful thinking) that those fleeing small town bigotries into big cities are actually more compassionate toward the entirety of humanity. We still make lots of mistakes but the key point is that we're trying to do better. When people discuss locking up immigrants at the border, you can either fight against the injustice and racism inherent in the entire process or simply shrug your shoulders like a douchebag and try to sound super smart by saying, "Well, they should have thought about that before they came here!" As if everybody in the world has access to media that somehow preempts the two hundred years of American propaganda that we're willing to accept the hungry and the tired and those yearning to breathe free. I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area in the 70s and the reality of the world that existed around me at the time was fucking Star Trek: The Next Generation compared to what's going on in 2019. We had station ID breaks on KTVU Channel 2 out of San Francisco that would show a kid running around and playing and introducing the viewer into their world that would end with the kid saying, "I'm proud to be a Chinese American!", or "I'm proud to be a black American!" It's the kind of thing that would get so many people in a huff now and yet it was a simple and effective means to introduce younger viewers to the heterogeneity of their community. And now, in 2019, we have Comicsgate who can't stand to be reminded that people other than white people can be protagonists. It boggles my mind that people can get so upset over shit that won't make a millimeter wave on the cultural yacht they were born on. Fucking grow up, assholes. Not everything is about you. I think I was going to say more things about erasure! I don't mean to make light of it since it's absolutely a strategy used to disenfranchise groups or exclude them from social movements. But it's your go-to argument against everything you read, you're not going to make many friends. Lots of essays or articles or arguments need to be specific and they can't include every situation or group in the specific argument being made. Maybe it's tough to accept laser focused arguments on the Internet when the audience is harder to gauge. I know peanut allergies exist and they're deadly but I still stick the knife I just used for peanut butter in the preserves. Not because I don't give a fuck but because I know the audience using my apricot preserves. But if I were to mention this on the Internet, everybody who knows nothing about the context of my preserves and my audience and my entire existence would jump all over me saying things like, "That's really irresponsible!" and "You're going to kill somebody!" and "Apricot? You fucking monster!" I usually hate analogies but sometimes they're fun. The general problem with analogies is that people don't use them to help clarify arguments; they use them to try to simplify their argument into something nobody can disagree with. But by that time, the relationship between the actual argument and the analogy is tenuous at best! But I think my peanut butter allergy analogy is pretty rock solid! Hey! You know who's diverse?! The Brotherhood of Evil! They have a French gorilla and a British woman and a bald white guy (also French but what can you do? This team was all up in France and shit) and a brain in a jar. Hopefully Brain was African or Chinese or Pakistani. Maybe he was also autistic. He's enough of a cypher to allow any reader to identify with him, I guess. He's definitely gay! Unless he's into bestiality. One of those reasons is why he winds up fucking the French gorilla. Hmm, maybe not making it clear what Brain's intent was was a mistake by DC because doesn't that just amplify anti-gay sentiment by associating it actual deviant behaviors? If DC did make it clear and I'm the one who's obfuscating the matter, I should probably shut up. The Brain and Mallah are definitely gay for each other's human dicks. The fact that Mallah's dick is gorilla and Brain's dick is non-existent shouldn't hamper their love. The Brotherhood of Evil are being set up by some guy named Toulon. There was a lot of narration boxes that explained it but I was too busy thinking, "How is Brain going to suck Mallah's cock?" I know this takes place after Crisis on Infinite Earths and Earth-11 shouldn't exist but it does! Maybe this story takes place before Crisis? Maybe when the story reveals they're on Earth-11, the editor will provide a note, "*This story takes place before Crisis on Infinite Earths! -- Know-it-all Knobby!" Mallah introduces himself to Tin, the leader of the good guys, I guess?, by saying, "We're the Brotherhood!" I suppose I'd shorten the name of my organization when I met new people too if it were called The Brotherhood of Evil. Unless the new guy I was introducing myself to was like Kim Jong-un or Donald Trump or Mark Zuckerberg. I'm so tuned in to world events that I first typed "Mark Zupperberg" and couldn't figure out why it looked wrong.

You might have thought "cutting them down like grass" was the correct phrase and "mowing them down like paper mache" is stupid but this is Earth-11, dumb dumb.

The conclusion of the story has something to do with Doctor Mist and the Global Guardians helping make the universe a better place by saving Tintin (somehow! I mean, Crisis, right?! What the fuck?), getting some guy named Toulon killed (he's only "some guy" to me because sometimes these espionage plots are just too convoluted with too many normal characters I don't care about), and getting the Brotherhood of Evil killed. They fail in getting the Brotherhood killed but seem content with their other machinations. Archetype’s Great Choose Your Own Villain Adventure

You’ve finally done it — you have written an amazing hero.

She has all of your own best traits: kindness, bravery, stubbornness, cute glasses. You don’t know if you want to be her or marry her. Readers will see themselves in her and dress to match her style. Critics will fear her. And best of all, she is wholly, undeniably, ready carrying the weight of your complex plot.

But now you need to craft your antagonist. And this fellow really needs to measure up.

Don’t worry, though—in this post, we’ll break down some of the many tools you can turn to when creating someone to foil your protagonist’s plans.

Just how bad is bad?

A.  An Evil Villain? This villain has no morals, or if she does, she buried them deep down a long time ago. She’ll sacrifice her family, friends, and everyone’s free will for eternal beauty, unlimited power, or world domination. Think the Evil Queen from Snow White or Sauron from Lord of the Rings.

B.  A Disgruntled Opponent? This villain's had a lifelong streak of bad luck. His parents were killed by someone eerily similar to the hero, global warming flooded his lair last week, and the hero spilled coffee on his pants while saving a cat from a tree this morning. Really, all he wants is a nap—if he has to chain up a few good guys for some peace and quiet, it’s no more than he deserves. Think Luke Castellan from the Percy Jackson series.

C.  A Good Person with Questionable Goals? Rational people presented with the same situation won’t always agree, because at the end of the day all people, even equally good people, have different values and morals. If your hero wants to flip the switch and save five people on the train track but your antagonist doesn’t think the one man on the other side should die, you’re probably going for this dynamic. This is Captain America: Civil War through and through.

Just how serious are they?

A.  Funny and exaggerated? A villain like this is there to put a wrench in your hero’s plans (and probably provide lots of comic relief), but not seriously threaten anyone with bodily harm. They may think they’re irredeemable and say they couldn’t care less about another person, but they’re either confused or wildly incompetent. Think about it: nobody believes Dr. Doofenshmirtz is going to do anything more than mildly inconvenience them.

B.  Menacing and exaggerated? Your villain shoots lasers out of their eyes. Their knuckles are embedded with knives. One whiff of their breath causes paralysis. One word from their mouth has civilians leaping off cliffs. They wear only black, and their evil lair says “Evil Lair” on the front door. They also probably have a lot of henchpeople. Basically, everything about them screams Bad Guy, to the point where it’s definitely not realistic. A good example is Gru from Despicable Me.

C.  Spookily realistic to the point of goosebumps? The world is a scary place, and sometimes it’s important to represent that in your work. Antagonists can be made all the worse by the fact that they’re just regular people doing reprehensible, unforgivable things. Think Frollo in Hunchback of Notre Dame or Mother Gothel in Tangled—attempted sexual assault and child abuse are no joke.

Was your antagonist …

A.  Brought into being because of the actions of your hero? Some villains might have been a cashier down at the 7-Eleven if it wasn’t for that chance encounter with your hero all those years ago. Now, though, they’ve sworn to get revenge for their slighted pride—stupid heroes and their ego, right? Buddy Pine, AKA Syndrome from The Incredibles, is a great example of this.

B.  Morally transformed by a dramatic life event? Sometimes good people do bad things when they’re under a lot of stress, especially if they’ve been traumatized. Have they been forced to make an impossible choice with consequences that haunt them? Tortured because they were good? Watched their family die? Depending on who you ask, the Punisher falls into this category.

C.  Doing the wrong thing for the right reasons? Sure, your antagonist stole the diamonds and fired a warning shot at the reception outside the gala, but the real baddie is holding her wife hostage at home. Your hero would have done the same thing—right? Think the origin story of the Hook-Handed Man from A Series of Unfortunate Events, or Killmonger from Black Panther.

On a related note, does your antagonist …

A.  Have a history with your hero? In many cases, the protagonist and the antagonist go way back. Maybe they were once friends (this has tons of potential—do they know each other’s weaknesses? Have certain pet peeves they’ve sworn never to exploit?), or maybe they’ve just fought about this issue many times before. Have they dated? Were their parents friends? Think Catra from Netflix’s She-Ra reboot.

B.  Fear your hero’s reputation? This antagonist knows your hero is coming, and as much as he tries to deny it, he knows he’s not ready. Maybe there’s a prophecy. Maybe the hero just has a really good PR team. Either way, the villain is going to try to shoot first—and if he misses, he probably won’t get another chance. Voldemort.

C.  Have no interest in your hero whatsoever — the hero wants to stop them, but they don’t think the hero is a threat. There’s always a chance, though, that your villain doesn’t even think your hero is worth the time of day. Maybe they’ve heard of him, maybe they haven’t—what does it matter when they’re not going to be stopped either way? This villain feels toward your hero what Irene Adler feels toward Sherlock Holmes—totally unbothered, and maybe occasionally amused.

Other fun questions to ask:

Do they have a sidekick? Why does that sidekick serve them?

Do they have an accent? Is it real or for effect?

Do they have powers? Do they wish they did?

Do they have a color scheme?

Does something dramatic happen every time they come into the room (lightning strikes, mirrors crack, a woman screams, etc.)

If left in the room with a wailing baby, how would they handle it?

If left in the room with a barking dog, would they handle that differently?

What are they afraid of?

Things to be cautious of:

Excusing appalling behavior via redemption.

Some things are just inexcusable—or at least, they should be, if we don’t want to contribute to the negative energy out there in the world. So ask yourself … has your antagonist beaten their wife? Sexually abused someone? Harmed children? Acted extremely racist? Gleefully supported fascism? Brutally killed their own father in cold blood?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, think really carefully before planning a redemption arc.

If you want your villain to turn to the good side by the end, they can still do villainous things. They can lie, they can betray those who are close to them, they can plot world domination, they can even kill. But there are lines you probably can’t let them cross if you don’t want them to be hated by your other characters for all eternity. Let’s put it this way—Aladdin, whose worst crime is stealing bread, is redeemable. Loki, who was supposedly being mind-controlled during the first Avengers film, is questionable. Hannibal Lecter, who eats people, is a lost cause.

A really, really phenomenal example of a villain doing sometimes-okay things and yet not being excused for his misdeeds is Count Olaf from A Series of Unfortunate Events—both the books and the Netflix series. There are genuine, emotional reasons he’s a terrible person, and he even does halfway decent things every once in a while. And yet, he’s not forgiven by the characters or the narrative, and he’s treated as the villain he is until the bitter end. Actually, A Series of Unfortunate Events is great at this all around:

Charles: You have to understand, he had a very terrible childhood. Klaus: I understand. I’m having a very terrible childhood right now.

A less great example is Severus Snape from Harry Potter. When it’s revealed that he loved Lily and occasionally didn’t have it out for Harry by the very end of Deathly Hallows, it’s like the narrative wants us to forget about his bullying, bigotry, attempted genocide, child abuse, pet-murdering, deception, and every other foul thing he gets up to for thousands of pages.

Queer coding. There’s this thing Disney does that you might be familiar with. Let’s pick a few examples and see if you can pinpoint it.

Simba vs. Scar

Hercules vs. Hades

John Smith vs. Governor Ratcliffe

Ariel vs. Ursula

That’s right—male villains tend to be more effeminate and delicate than their tough heroic counterparts, and female villains are hell-bent on corrupting sweet, innocent princesses. Even if the characters themselves aren’t meant to be read as gay—even if they don’t appear gay at all, aside from the coded traits—there’s a history of this being used to reinforce negative stereotypes.

That’s not to say that you can’t have gay villains—make everyone LGBT+, if you want. Goodness knows there are enough straight characters out there to last several lifetimes. But if only the villains are gay, and all the heroes are straight, you’re getting into the dangerous territory of suggesting that the traits that villains have are traits that only gay people have, and vice versa.

The same thing applies to race—if all your antagonists are black or Asian or Jewish or Romani and all your heroes are white, what does that say about how your readers should view good and evil? And if all your villains are disabled or mentally ill and your heroes are able-bodied, might you end up spreading the wrong message?

Writing diverse stories is amazing and so, so worth it! But it’s definitely going to take extra sensitivity and care—so make sure you’re fully committed, or you risk doing more harm than good in the end.

Interview with @Angel_Ortiz and their work for Caught Out

What is your favorite medium to work with? I enjoy making manips & use a variety of phone apps to do that. I usually see a base I like and immediately have images of the characters in mind so I tend to make them on the spur of the moment, sometimes whilst sat in waiting rooms etc. Hence why photoshop isn't my go to medium. When you are choosing a story do you base your choice on the snippet/summary alone or are you looking for a certain type of story? I like to choose from snippets or a summary. I have adhd so for a story to grab my attention and hold it, the story needs to pull me in and keep there so I can hyperfocus. If there's an air of mystery in the summary, like for example the setting and premise is explained and then there are a bunch of questions around character motives and intentions, you got me because I'm gonna be drawn to it immediately because I NEED answers. If there are relatable elements, or if the story snippet punches me in the feels with either angst, or fluff or smut with emotional attachment... or if you write kink, you got my full attention. Which part of the creative process you enjoy the most? When I experiment with character images and they perfectly align with the base I get really excited. Then when the final touches are done and it's finished, that sense of accomplishment is amazing. What was the most challenging thing you faced while doing this particular art? I like to make my manips look as real as possible. So if something is off I hyperfocus and work on it relentlessly by experimenting with different processes until something works. If I exhaust everything, I put the idea on the back burner in case alternative images are found or new ones released that will work better. Luckily the only issue I had with this one was the Regina's hair, so I gave her a hair cut! Coincidentally, not long after I made it, Lana cut her hair in exactly the same style lol it was almost like magic haha! What would like to share about your art that you think the viewers might have missed? There is something in the image that was actually missed by my assigned author at first. We kept in touch throughout the process and I got to read her fic to see her interpretation of my art in the story she wrote for it. She messaged me closer towards the end date and asked if there was a leash between Emma and Regina. Yes there is a slim chain leash to a fancy collar that Regina is wearing. I chose not to define it as it would have thrown the lighting off and made it less realistic. Miss apples_a_day was excited to have this confirmed and went back to writing the story with a view to include this detail. So it may be something that not everyone notices. Which do you find more difficult doing art for an AU story or Canon one and why? I don't find either difficult to be honest. If I want to add some magic I use light pens with Repix app, and coloured smoke etc. And AU I can find bases and adapt them to fit. I guess the only challenging part for me with manips is finding the images that work well together. You have to get head positions perfectly aligned so they need to be in the right positions to fit the base. Matching skin tone is the other challenge too. But these challenges are present in both canon and AU manips. Even using, say for example, Regina's body but a different head of hers from another scene can be a challenge with skin tones as each scene is filmed with different lighting etc. When do you feel your art is complete? When it looks as real as I can possibly get it and I don't see any errors in the layering. Tell us something about yourself (e.g. something new something old something nobody knows :D ) ?
