"Dethzazz" is one of those episodes where, if you don't know the show, the creator, or rock n' roll history, the symbolism and the message get skewed and misinterpreted. Twitter is, unfortunately, the wild west when it comes to reading comprehension. Tiktok isn't too far behind.

The people who are unable to recognize that either need to rewatch the episode or look up an analysis. The episode has never nor will ever normalize pedophilia. In fact, it highlights just how fucking strange it is, and that in the episode, Dr. Rockso's whole career came tumbling down after the truth came out! The world in Metalocalypse did not normalize it, they actually punished him way more than I think our world would have. But the exaggerated reality is that these type of stars do get away with it and their lives (While Dr. Rockso is much worse off now than in his prime) can still make a come back. The biggest exaggeration is that Dr. Rockso even got kicked out of the band or that the cops actually went after him. You're not seeing things that aren't there, they just have poor reading and listening comprehension.

You don't gotta like Dr. Rockso or even his arch in "Dethzazz" but I'm personally glad that Smalls was even gutsy enough to put that in the show. That shit is real and it's a part of the subculture, I'm just glad that Dr. Rockso got more shit for it than a real person.

And yeah, the show is about brutality and metal but even brutality and metal have limits. Look at "Dethkids" when Dethklok is ashamed at Toki's outburst about hating children, or how the group hangs around Juliette while Toki is having his own arch. Dethklok is full of assholes but they aren't assholes enough to sexually assault a child.

Don't listen to Twitter. They clearly have not done any research on the show whatsoever.

Charles, Murderface and Rockzo are her favorite characters (she loves doing the Rockzo voice, she was just doing it a few minutes ago lol). She also said Abigail should get a spin-off. What I Imagine It Was Like For Charles To Manage Zazz Blammymatazz

Alternatively titled: I'm 95% sure it was Brendon Small voicing the manager and I shall accept corrections over my dead body

- Pros: Gaudy colors. Cons: Very gaudy colors.

- I think he would have genuinely been happier in the job if only they'd let him wear purple and red suits. He really hates how the orange clashes with his neon blue hair in such an ugly way and the green shoes just cement his hatred.

- Has had to bail all four idiots out of jail multiple times.

- Never actually did any of the cocaine offered to him, but he's been around it so long he can walk into a room with a single baggie of cocaine across from him, sniff the air by the door, and determine the cocaine's origins, quality, and freshness.

- He doesn't use this talent around the Dethklok boys because they would inevitably figure out a way to abuse it.

- The band exercised with him regularly. It was just about the only time he'd ever see them high off something that wasn't at least partially cocaine (they did come a little buzzed on marijuana, but runners high is a thing all of them actively chased). He and Rockzo were the most limber members.

- Charles was the second strongest person present. At the very beginning of the band's career, he was still building up muscle. Rockzo would occasionally try to literally throw his manager over his shoulder and carry out him out of the room whenever Charles needed to drag the other bandmates outside to helps prevent overdoses and deaths.

- After the very first time, it has never worked again. Charles has no qualms about first using momentum to flip over Rockzo's shoulder and then throwing his least favorite clown to the floor, WWE style.

- His favorite was Snowball. Snowball had the thing with drugs but at least he was (relatively) the least trouble-causing. The guy hooked up with surprisingly few people and was much more careful about it than any of the others. He and Charles are still in (distant) contact, but they don't talk about how they became friends.

- Razzy did a lot of heroin and smoked constantly. The effects are still visible 20 years later.

- Bink Bonk was the one who supplied the band with cocaine more often than not. His addiction was surprisingly manageable and he had the least miserable time quitting out of everyone. He's very much not sober but at least now he no longer mixes drugs or does cocaine.

- The amount of clown groupies was so goddamn irritating. The amount of times a backstage hookup was accompanied by a sound of a balloon popping an a juggalo-loking chick storming out angry and upset with one tit missing? Disturbingly hilarious even after dozens of times. Charles kept a running tally of whose groupies had this happen, how many times this happened, and what came out of the fake tits.

- Honorary mention to the gal who offered to "Blow up everyone's balloons" and then subsequently got all four members of the band sent to the ER with penises that she had somehow tied into (crude) knots and bends.

- Rockzo's pedophilia was not known to the band until Dory. Charles handed in his resignation when he heard the song for the first time, a surprise in a live concert and the others initially felt that a fictional song about a (presumed) fictional girl is on the safe-ish, if skeevy, side of things. Three weeks later, Rockzo was caught with Dory, went on the run, and the band self-destructed. Charles did a handful of stints with smaller bands, helped out Financially Raped and Snakes 'N' Barrels. Skwisgaar and Pickles remembered him and contacted him when Dethklok was born.

- Rockzo doesn't remember Charles having managed them. Charles had a bit more weight back then, differently colored and styled hair, and constantly wore clown makeup. His vocal tics picked up a bit more after he left, but he'd always disguised them during his time with Zazz Blammymatazz. Rockzo is genuinely convinced Charles is the shoe salesman he'd once gotten his boots from.

- The only thing Charles still has from his time with Zazz is the tie to his orange suit. He feels awkward about throwing it away but refuses to wear it.

- Charles learned to juggle when Zazz Blammymatazz was kicking off and he'd have some time to himself/with just the band, back when they weren't constantly high on every drug available. He still remembers how but will only attempt to juggle if he's so drunk he can't repress it. He's freakishly talented despite never having the time to practice.

Of, course, neither of them remembering what went down is what makes their whole situation during AOTD even more interesting.

I will say, however, that I do not think it's as simple as Skwisgaar thinking 'You did this bad thing and befriended a bad person therefore I'm mad'. Skwisgaar was upset about the book, but he also understood his lesson from it. In AOTD, he's seen teaching the guitar to Toki, and he's way more patient, even if still exasperated. We see him admit Toki was good at some point, something that had never happened over the course of the show, or DSR even (even though it was shown!). So, while being mad, I think Skwisgaar understood it takes two to tango.

Whether Magnus was always like that or just turned into it progressively is up for debate so I personally don't believe Skwisgaar identifies him (or the band as a whole) as an abuser per se, but rather a person they would prefer to avoid and were scared of. You could argue that already constitutes an abuser, but what the band perceives him as is fundamental in this conversation. None of them resisted when Toki befriended Magnus when they actually made an intervention for Toki the minute he started hanging out with Rockzo. I am convinced they came to terms Magnus wasn't bad for Toki, I mean, Magnus saved him for God's sake! He saved Toki when Dethklok weren't around, why would he hurt him?

So, anyway, going back to Skwisgaar, I definitely think there were negative feelings involved with regards to Toki's friendship with Magnus. But I think they were more of the petty nature, more jealous. Skwisgaar has never liked Toki befriending other people and he was so mad when Toki got a 'father friend' that taught him guitar. Magnus used to be part of Dethklok, which means Skwisgaar at the very least must have respected his playing. So I think Toki's friendship with Magnus must have burned in his heart, something akin to being replaced without a chance to talk things through post-Bookklok. All this, covered in a thin layer of denial because you know how the boys are.

He was mad, but not enough to address it. He was mad, but when it really comes to it, he's not very confrontational. He was mad, but opening up about it would mean admitting how much he cared about Toki in the first place. So, he let it happen, just like he was going to let Dethklok disband even though he really didn't want to. He let someone he loved grow close to someone that hurt the band in the past.

After the events of Bookklok it's also entirely possible Skwisgaar wasn't sure what Toki truly thought of him anymore. Maybe Toki truly meant it when he said he hated him. Maybe they had never been close in the first place. And as if that wasn't a painful realization enough of his own, showing it would be worse and more pathetic for him. I mean, Toki seemingly moved on from the incident without problem. Seemingly. Him trying to get more friends after his fallout with Skwisgaar is clearly a symptom that he wasn't doing okay but these boys are so emotionally constipated. They need to talk these things through. But they didn't and now Toki and Magnus were friends.

Then, beat, Toki is back and it turns out he was kidnapped and they rescued him and the whole thing was insane and some people even died. But he doesn't remember. And Toki loves him so much now, he's all over him, he's so affectionate. He's not even trying to take his place anymore. And Skwisgaar gets it, because it's obvious Toki went through some shit. But he also doesn't, why does Toki love him so much now, of all people. Didn't he hate him enough to almost ruin his career? Didn't he chose to befriend the guy that used to be in their band over him? Didn't he break Skwisgaar's heart and never cared to talk about it?

'Who is this Toki and what happened to the old one?' must be something along the lines for Skwisgaar. And how can they ever talk about what happened if Toki just dealt with something much worse and came back a different person? It's like Skwisgaar just ran into a dead end alley. He's not an asshole, he knows Toki's situation was way worse but that doesn't automatically erase his feelings and his hurt. Not to mention, the world is fucking ending and everyone is acting so weird. Nathan is isolating, Pickles is trying to be responsible for everyone, Murderface is acting so goddamn strange and Toki...Toki won't leave him alone. Which, in retrospective might be easier to deal with than the rest.

The amount of details they forgot about DSR is unclear but I assume the emotional bits (like accepting Toki is their brother) somehow did make the cut considering how open they are to Murderface about needing him. So, under that assumption, Skwisgaar knows and accepts he loves Toki, but he can't work out one of the biggest events in their relationship. It's not Skwisgaar denying his affection for Toki, it's the world denying Skwisgaar of getting closure from what happened. After all these years, the band can freely accept they love each other but it seems like Toki timeskipped to the happy resolution, before they could resolve their issues.

And Toki, well, Toki really fucking went through it. So much that he's immensely loving to the band at all times. Skwisgaar is a jerk? Big deal, he has a family and a home now. He doesn't remember what happened to him either, but it feels like he came back from the dead. He can see his scars and the eyebags on his face. He can feel his bones and everything hurts. His brain might not remember, but his body does.

Similarly to the band , I think Toki remembers thinking about the band during his kidnapping (since he refers to the band as brothers also). So how could he ever be anything but adoring to Dethklok, and to Skwisgaar especially who accepted him into the band. How could he be anything but grateful to his brothers that, on top of it all, actually saved him from danger. He was saved twice by them, back when he was a homeless kid and now that Magnus kidnapped him. He was saved by them both physically and mentally. Whatever little problem he had with any of them is peanuts. He is safe now. He is cared for.

Like that, the real tragedy of Skwisgaar and Toki's mismatched relationship in AOTD is that they're mentally in different places. Skwisgaar is stuck in what happened, because he doesn't remember much more from that. He knows he loves Toki but he also knows Toki hurt him and the lack of resolution bothers him. But Toki is more than ready to move on, he's ready to turn page and love Dethklok forever. If Bookklok was a door, then Skwisgaar can't walk through it, but Toki already slammed it open and ran past it.

The important part though, is that they do love each other. Even while Skwisgaar might be cold in contrast to Toki's affectionate nature in AOTD, he's still there for Toki, in his own way. And the same goes the other way, Toki is very attentive of Skwisgaar during the whole course of the movie. Regardless of everything, they had each other's backs. But there's talks to be had, and hopefully them saving the world means they'll have time for those.

This moment has been giffed to hell and back but I wanted to point out some of my fave things about it:

Toki's sad and distraught expression turning into a happy one the moment he mentions his brothers (and looks at Skwisgaar)

Skwisgaar noticing this and squinting preemptively at Toki

Murderface fucking rolling his eyes because Toki is being a gaywad. Makes you wonder how many times he's witnessed this display so far

Similarly, Skwisgaar moving faster than Toki can hug him. He was way too prepared for this reaction. Again, how many times has this happened already?

Skwisgaar doesn't even say the whole sentence?? Not 'don't touch me' but 'don't touch' like he's dealing with a misbehaved pet or something

Yet, immediately, he's back at smiling fondly at Skwisgaar because even if Skwisgaar doesn't return the enthusiasm, he still loves him

So Dr. Rockzo doesn't change all that much for the wrestling AU! Rockzo is a wrestling vet who's still chasing his heyday in the 80s. And like 80s musicians, 80s wrestlers also had a lot of KA-KA-KA-KOKAINE problems, which ultimately ruined his career. Nowadays he makes appearances at indie shows around the country and does seminars for trainees.

Kayfabe never really died with Rockzo. There's rarely a moment when he's not in-character, which gets him into a lot of trouble considering he's an incredibly successful heel. Meaning, he is very good at getting everybody to hate him. But he plays face sometimes at shows. Especially now that he's older and...pathetic.

Charles fucking hates him, but Rockzo does actually have a lot of valuable knowledge and experience to offer, so he visits and helps train sometimes.

ohh, time to unpack my messy thoughts on doomstar. on one hand, there’s some really prime magnus moments in it, and brendon really gets to show off his songwriting chops... there are so many good songs there.

i also will never understand the drive to make rockzo a useful or “funny” character. he’s not. i hate rockzo and i hate his stupid “save-the-day” moment in doomstar.  i realize the point, narratively, may have been that they were finally coming to realize they had to rely on others and that they had fucked up and yadda yadda, but why not make them rely more on each other? why not have them realize they had to make actual lasting change instead of throwing money at a handful of people and then fleeing? i don’t know, i’m probably overthinking this sjflsjks but point is the rockzo giving everyone cocaine to make them happy bullshit makes me go >:( every time

also, hm, nathan/abigail endgame was handled... badly, there... is abigail supposed to be THAT amazed by nathan & co cronenberg-ing a guy? the way they paint nathan as seeing her in his imaginings of her, like, in partying around the world, was just... well it was gross. :)  please let abigail process her trauma, dump nathan, and run off with amber.  or something.

okay enough negativity. things i DO like: like i said above, a lot of the songs are straight-up jams.  brendon knows his musical genres and the stylistic flourishes and tropes that make them what they are.  there are some solid characterization moments for magnus and a good foundation for a continuing comforting/familial relationship between abigail and toki.  dethklok learns the importance of caring for each other. all very good.

if we were given some context for things via a season 5 maybe i’d feel better about some of my complaints about doomstar. but as it stands, i’d give it maybe a 6/10.

do I like them: yes, yes, 100% yes

5 good qualities: whipsmart, extreme dedication, good fighter, willing to go along with some of the boys’ sillier ideas (that shitty phone plan, for example) and, as a character, just a delightful straight man for the rest of dethklok

3 bad qualities: seems like he’s out of touch with his own feelings, a tendency towards stoicism to the detriment of his connections with others, questionable moral compass

favourite episode/etc: i don’t think charles actually gets any episode truly to himself. :( but scarles’ return in s3 is one i love, and the part where he’s describing his job, and everything about “tracking” in dsr

otp: Charles/Pickles was probably one of my first ships for the show, but, well, Magnus/Charles is starting to consume my soul

brotp: i think him and abigail would bond over having to Deal with Dethklok

ot3: like i mentioned in the pickles reply, i’ve got a deep abiding love for nathan/pickles/charles but @offdensmith and @wxcked-fc have awoken me to the potential of throwing magnus into charles ships and now i’m thinking about nathan/charles/magnus and pickles/charles/magnus and they’re both causing me to have a lot of feelings
