I got the purple reader too! I hadn't thought about my taste like that honestly. Though I think the book recs didn't seem to interest me necessarily. (Or well, I just donnnt like Murakami :/ ) Do you have any book recs that you think would also suit this kinda style?

i thought i was being snooty when i wasn't vibing with any of the book recs but everyone else was like 'damn these recs are ASS'. like i saw ishiguro's never let me go on there and honest to god scrolled back up thinking the quiz was for summer reading 😭 and GOD i hateeeee murakami. ppl keep toting him as some kind of revolutionary but every time i try to read his shit its deadass just man making his objectification of women verbose and 'deep' but if only if you're like 17 and have no life experience idk.

but YES i do have some purple reader recs! the description focused on books being dream-like, innovative, pushing the envelope or being experimental so i'd say:

in the dream house by carmen maria machado - a memoir but packaged in a way that's more like a domestic horror short story anthology about how abuse escalates in a relationship is akin to a haunting in a way. not easy to explain but it's SO good and carmen maria machado just has a very dream-like way of writing

ring shout by p djeli clark - one of the most unique books ive read concept wise. its an alternate historical supernatural novel where in the mid 1900s the kkk is actually like a demonic clan and these black hunters are tasked with taking them out. and omg the main character has this recurring nightmare and there's a major reveal abt that and it's stayed with me FOREVER

a tale for the time being by ruth ozeki - the book that got me back into writing. ruth's a writer and lives on an island and finds a lunchbox on the beach that has the journal of a japanese girl named nao who is being bullied in school and wants to chronicle why she's gonna kill herself. and it's such a long lasting story abt not hope per se but the infinite amount of growth and resilience of the human spirit and how buddhism is the wave basically lol

the nine lives of rose napolitano by donna frietas - i've never encountered a book that focused on alternate timelines without being heavy into scifi like this one. the book starts with rose on the fritz with her husband bc she's never wanted a baby but he's now pressuring her to have one and from this one confrontation it explores all the different ways her life can splinter and it's so interesting bc it doesn't go the cliche 'this is the life where im happy with a baby and here's a life where i'm miserable without one' it truly explores the deeper aspects of her marriage and how rose can find contentment no matter what. i really liked it at the end

jungian symbolism in astrology by alice o howell - i never know if ppl ever check out my astro book recs BUT this one is SO purple book coded. its abt astrology but you don;t need to know much because she doesn't talk abt methods but rather breaking down the meaning of astrology symbols. and it's not in a classic format its written like letters from the author to a dear friend. AND it goes beyond the basic astrology shit and really breaks down the importance of symbols and connects astrology to carl jung's ideas and it was such an interesting read that changed how i look at a lot of things

the night guest by hildur knutsdottir - a short but bold psychological horror. idunn realizes she's been sleepwalking and things happen. this is very dream like and very cold. very sparse. in a good way. a lot of american horror writers overwrite so this one was interesting in that it was more bare bones. the ending and the the reality of the horror is left really open ended and on goodreads a lot of ppl didnt like that but i fawking loved it

there's no such thing as an easy job by kikuko tsumura - follows the main character as she goes thru 5 different jobs after getting burnt out and the pitfalls of each job as means of 'escaping' the jobs that cause burn out if that makes sense. all of the 5 jobs are pretty unconventional and the main character accepts that even tho these jobs are 'easier' than her old job there's always just something that makes even an easy job complicated.

the secret lives of color by kassia st. clair - this is a nonfiction book about colors! like literally how we got the names for colors how we got them etc etc. i read it a long time ago but i remember that it was formatted really uniquely and written well

room by emma donoghue - read this for my humanities lit class in college a while ago but i never forgot it because i don't think i've ever read a book from the pov of a child in this kind of situation. basically jack's 5 and he's lived in a single room his entire life with his mom bc theyve been held captive by this weird ass old man. and the whole book you're like okay the mom's actions are kinda weird what's going on and then the reality of the situation sinks in and it's like...oh! all from the pov of a child that literally has only ever existed in a single room

I hate hate hateeeee ppl who self diagnose

More specifically ppl who find symptoms online and stuff and are like “Yep! Thats me i have that” and dont do a lick of extra research or ppl who fake shit (that big malingering trend in 2020) for attention.

DISCLAIMER i am welllll aware this is a very! Vocal minority and that most people do actually look into stuff but that vocal minority makes everyone look bad

Cause like i was taking psy 101 last semester yeah? And i really enjoyed it then we got to our last unit on different types of mental illnesses and ive gone basically my entireeeee life knowing i was very fundamentally uncanny from the people around me but i never had the words or the foggiest idea as to why which is obv frustrating

But then we get to the part on personality disorders and something clicked especially with BPD so i went and did a tonnnn more research and am i saying i have it? FUCKKKK NO! am i saying it’s worth looking into when i get access to professional care? YES!

But like i hate even mentioning it to ppl and when i do i have to preface heavily im not self diagnosing cause im so worried people will see me as an attention seeker and hate me and stuff for appropriating a very serious condition when that is not at all my intention

okay i’m freshly motivated and ready to start feeding you guys!

so i don’t like making promises and telling you “this will happen on this day” because i can’t predict how i’ll be feeling that day and will probably be setting everyone up for disappointment. i don’t want to be that person who doesn’t keep their word!

so this is a less formal version of that.

for a while, as is evident on my blog, i was in a slump where i just didn’t feel the same spark with this project as i did when i started it, but i think im back.

i hateeeee planning! i found that out! i think it’s one of the reasons i got so worn out with this project, just the constant planning and seeing author advice saying stuff like “this is how you should do this”, i realized i write much better when im not thinking about what im writing and where it’ll end, if that makes sense. Obviously some stuff needs to be planned, i just don’t love planning Everything.

so heres the deal,

demo - i want to write a really good chunk of it to be released, like prologue + episode 1, prologue will probably be pretty short, but episodes will be split into acts (probably 3).

character boards - nobody asked for one but its fun for me ok, probably won’t be released until after the demo so you know some of the characters that haven’t been mentioned on the blog.

intro - there is something missing in the intro i just can’t figure out!!! i will be tearing my hair out trying to make it look good and less lacking

idk i mean some things i think its just silly not to interpret as gay but when i say it is really not an option w sgrs if u want to comprehend what is happening at all in the plot itself like it is subtext in the sense that it is never voiced explicitly I Am Gay and In Love With You but it is text in terms of its relevance and importance like to miss the themes of someone being like my whole life feels so much like a performance that when i am on stage i finally feel at ease that having to visibly perform gender roles and heterosexuality and being more comfortable with femininity is not just acceptable but actively expected of me and every single character relationship being so heavily influenced by sukeroku and kikuhikos feelings for one another being clearly clearly romantic in nature that it wasnt just a matter of kikuhikos lack of interest in miyokichi but him only showing warmth and affection to sukeroku and his ultimately pushing sukeroku out of his life as a complicated act of self destruction and that rejection being paralleled with his breakup w miyo and then the two of them getting together right after that despite not appearing to have almost any feelings for one another bound initially first and foremost by their being in love with and left behind by kikuhiko which was obviously not a stable foundation for a relationship lmfao thus being crucial to THEIR own relationship dynamics and the brief period where kiku and sukeroku live together again raising a child where they both literally and metaphorically are rarely performing being like the most peaceful moment of their lives falling asleep holding hands when im with you everything is fun i notice things i never did before and want to share it all with you if i could stay by your side forever listening to your rakugo it would be so easy sometimes i hated you but then.. sometimes i loved you when things were hard for me your rakugo was my comfort the good the bad everything i felt came from your rakugo and i cant do without it now come back to tokyo im not telling you to do it for the art or the audience i want you to do it for me sukeroku voice i wasnt gone that long when did you get that look in your eye [tender smile] like idk what else could possibly be enough to convince literally what else would it take short of an on screen kiss in addition to 2 extremely awkward ones shared between the 2 of them and miyokichi deliberately inserted into the story by kikuhiko himself

First off I just wanted to say thank you for infamous!! I can’t even pinpoint what it is but it has taken over my brain for the last week since I discovered it. Your writing/character development is amazing and you really are just a spectacular writer- you really know how to set up a scene and make it feel authentic. I absolutely love how open you are to hearing your readers wants/suggestions and it’s amazing that you’re already planning on doing POV chapters/bonus content, but I just want to make sure you don’t burn yourself out! Obviously you know what you can handle more than anyone else does, but I have seen IF authors get burn out and over extend themselves by trying to create extra content that will appease their readers and I would hateeeee to see that happen to you and Infamous! I am planning on supporting your Patreon as soon as it drops and I will obviously soak up any content I can, but I would rather not have any bonus content if that means you can focus solely on the book itself so you don’t have too much on your plate!! I hope this doesn’t come across as rude, as I said you know what you can handle and I’m grateful for anything you decide to create and share with us!! But I just wanna make sure you don’t get overwhelmed will all the extra stuff too ❤️

Thank so much :,) First, I'm glad you like Infamous and it always surprises me when someone likes it shjsjsj and it makes me happy! Secondly, it's very sweet of you to look out for me that way. It's true I have taken a bit of a step back from answering questions on the main blog. I used to answer so many in one day but I feel like being so open has left me vulnerable to a bit of entitlement from rude anons. Trying to keep up the pretense of a very active blog has left me a little drained and made me realize I created Infamous for one thing: to write! So I've started prioritizing my space to just write Infamous without feeling like I have to be active all the time on the blog. I have a lot of fun talking about Infamous on amyreads because I feel like there's no expectations here. I can just chat casually about it without feeling like people will take my word as law and then start having OPINYUNS about it nshsids ofc this is about like....0.5 percent of the people on the blog, everyone else has been so lovely and great :,) but even the negative minority can feel so loud because my brain just latches onto every bad thing about me. yeah yeah

As for the bonus content, you're right! I do need to be careful ahh I think it helps that I *want* to write these POV chapters so it doesn't feel like much of an obligation. I've had a lot of fun being able to focus on one scene that's already written and I can just remix it. But yeah, I will make sure to be a bit more mindful of my own limits <3

and it's not rude at all! I really appreciate it, it's nice to know there's someone out there thinking of me! As for saying no...HSHDBSDH it's very hard i hate disappointing people but omg ur right, i have such a hard time putting my foot down i don't like the idea of someone upset at me hshhsdbsdh

Yessss I love it. Cold air is a blessing.

For coffee, I put a ton of creamer in. Tea is just a no for me.

Yes! A bonsai, a couple cacti, and an aloe vera.

8 - what artistic medium do you use to express your feelings?

Does writing count??? I’m not very artistic 😅 but I consider myself a decent writer and poet. I feel like words are the easiest way to explain yourself so others can understand you better. It’s specific. Painting and drawing, etc. are also good too of course, I’m just not any good at them 😂 and I feel like they’re a bit more questionable. They have different meanings to people. But that’s what allows people to connect over them; seeing different viewpoints of the same thing. It kind of shows what type of person you are.

10 - do you sleep on your back, side, or stomach?

My side or my back. I can’t do stomach 😂 it’s just too uncomfortable for me.

12 - what’s your favorite planet?

Hm. I don’t really know. I guess Neptune or Uranus??? They’re pretty.

TBH I don’t even know who my best friend is anymore lately Well it would probably be a bit of a mess 😂 but messy in an organized way??? We’re pretty tidy people, at least when it comes to our rooms, but we (or I, at least) am still a little bit cluttery. I think it would look nice. Not necessarily modern, but just kind of homely.

16 - what’s your favorite pasta dish?

Spaghetti & meatballs OR chicken alfredo. Probably spaghetti and meatballs though.

18 - tell us about something dumb/funny you did that has since gone down in history between you and your friends and is always brought up.

God they just brought it up today. I swear I’m not as stupid as they make me seem though!!!!! So one time at lunch (like YEARS ago) they were talking about sports and I wasn’t really paying attention (because I’m not a sports person) and they asked me something and I think I said, “I’m not into baseball.” And of course with my luck they were talking about football. So :)))) There are always exaggerations about how I must think a homerun is in basketball, etc.

20 - what’s your favorite eye color?

I mean…it doesn’t really matter to me?? I don’t like thinking about eyes which you already know, so I’ve never really considered a favorite eye color. But I hateeeee the colored contacts people wear, especially when they wear two different colors (one of my friend’s ex-boyfriends used to wear one silver and one bright green one and it was hideous). Anyway, if I had to choose a color, I guess I’d say brown. It’s under-appreciated sometimes 🙂

22 - are you a morning person?

It fluctuates. Sometimes I am, sometimes I’m not. Especially if the reason I’m waking up is to go to something I don’t want to do, then I am NOT a morning person at all.

24 - is there someone out there you would trust with every single one of your secrets?

Honestly, probably not. I just really don’t trust people to keep their lips zipped or to not judge me.

26 - what are the shoes you’ve had for forever and wear with every single outfit?

My oldest pair of shoes rn are probably the ones I’m wearing (or at least they look the oldest since I wear them pretty much daily). They’re black and white cheetah print converse, with cheetah eyes on the side. They’re super comfortable.

Both are nice, but I like sunsets better. It’s the end of the day, time to rest, and it just looks cooler imo. More fiery.

30 - think of it: have you ever been truly scared?

In all honesty, I don’t think so. I get scared easily, but I wouldn’t say I’ve been truly terrified.

Oh boy. I could go on and on. One: the sound of people chewing. It’s awful but you can’t tell them it’s annoying because that’s rude but it makes me. Want. To. Hit. Someone. It is SO irritating. Another thing: my brother doesn’t flush the toilet :)))) and that drives me insane. Another one: people who spit on you when they talk. People in band who, rather than not playing on the parts they don’t know and working on them later, just play whatever they want and mess everyone up. People who don’t put things back where they found them. People who nitpick every little thing about something that someone else did. I could just keep going on.

40 - think of a piece of jewelry you own: what’s it’s story? does it have any meaning to you?

I’m just gonna choose the ring I wear all the time. I got it at the fair, it was only $12 😂 it doesn’t really hold much meaning, I just like having it so I can fidget with it when I’m nervous or something.

I actually haven’t gotten to experience any coffee shops :/ just Starbucks lol. But once I’m on my own I think I’ll check more places out.

Hm I was afraid of a lot of things and I still am. I’d say pretty much the same things, more or less. Things that aren’t even closely real, things that my mind just comes up with. And now I’m actually scared of more things, I think. Realistic situations and whatnot.

I collect rocks, but I think that’s pretty normal, right?? I also collect piggy banks and hedgehog knick knacks.

Hmm…it differs from person to person I suppose. But I guess, like…the way people smile, the different ways people laugh when they’re truly laughing (even if they find it obnoxious it’s a part of them and it’s just kinda cute and funny), when a person who doesn’t usually dress up dresses up all fancy and gets all shy about it. I don’t know. Just little things I guess.

Oof well I’ve pretty much mentioned all my IRL friends and they’re kinda predictable 😂 so I’ll choose an Internet friend. They’re extremely sweet, and do so, so much for other people, even when they’re already so busy with their own life. They’re always caring and genuine, and put others before themselves (even though I wish they wouldn’t sometimes). They’re super patient, which is good because sometimes I can be a bit slow 😂 and just so, so amazing and beautiful and talented and hardworking and they deserve to go far. I’m on the fence actually 😕 it’s not like I hate them with a burning passion or anything but I think they’re kinda milking it for all it’s worth at this point, which usually happens with movies.

80 - what color are your bedroom walls? did you choose that color? if so, why?

3 white walls and a light bluish tealish wall (with a border of music notes in silver paint on the teal wall). I got to redecorate my room a couple years ago for my birthday and I love the color blue but I didn’t want something that would darken the room (although I keep my curtains mostly closed lol). The music notes were from a piece I played that year in the school band, it was my favorite.

82 - are/were you good in school?

I’m a procrastinator but I do get good grades 😁 I’ve never had an -A or lower. And I’m kind of a teacher’s pet 😂

84 - are you planning on getting tattoos? which ones?

Definitely not. I don’t see the point in basically paying someone to stab you with a needle over and over again. If I did get one, I think it would be a clef heart or 아리엘.

86 - do you like concept albums? which ones?

I can’t really think of any specific ones (???? maybe I’m just being dumb ????) but I do like the idea of them.

88 - are there any artistic movements you particularly enjoy?

Ehhh, I’m not exactly an art buff, so idk what to say. I think that as long as it carries emotion and makes the viewer feel something or think of something, then it must be pretty good. The style doesn’t define what story it tells, it just helps set the mood.

90 - talk about your one of you favorite cities.

I haven’t really traveled so I’m gonna have to skip this 😶

92 - are you a person who drowns their pasta in cheese or a person who barely sprinkles a pinch?

Honestly I prefer just butter on my pasta but if I’m putting on cheese then I’m going all the way.

Well I mean idk if it counts since I know her online so I’ll go with the closest one that I know irl. My aunt just had her birthday, it was a couple days ago.

96 - do you install your computer updates really quickly or do you procrastinate on them a lot?

I usually procrastinate them 😅 because it always asks me when I’m in the middle of doing something and I don’t wanna stop what I’m doing.

I don’t remember…but probably not 😂

100 - if you were presented with two buttons, one that allows you to go 5 years into the past, the other 5 years into the future, which one would you press? why?

The past. I’d like to do some things differently. Be a better person. Make myself become a better person and have better habits. The future can still be changed but my past is set in stone. Although, if I go 5 years back, I might not end up on this site, so overall I’d rather just stay in the present 😂

27. Do you try to do most of your research ahead of writing (when research is necessary) or do you do it as things come up?

Listen, I fly by the seat of my pants AT ALL TIMES. If something requires research, generally my first draft has (parentheses everywhere) and I’ll go back and fill them in later. If it’s a huge plot point, I’ll try and work it out ahead of time, but minor details? Forget it, I’m looking that shit up right before I post it.

28. How do you make sure your plot points are there while also making them blend in with the story?

Uhhh, that’s a really good question, and that’s also why I have a beta who keeps my ass on track. I tend to get lost in the character moments and the fluff and the self-indulgent OH MY GOD I JUST REALLY NEED THIS MOMENT stuff. It’s nice to have a second pair of eyes to steer me back to the plot (I hateeeee plot. is it not enough to write shameless smut and fluff with no clear direction? No? Fuck). But, I do try to use those character moments to push the plot along. 

29. How do you plot your stories?

Plot? What plot?

Just kidding. I have to admit I’m not suuuuuuper versed in this because BWGL is the first plot-heavy thing I’ve ever written. And it’s taken literal months of mapping this story out, which is ridiculous considering it’s essentially a romcom. If I had to write something with any more moving pieces, I’d be lost. 

That being said, I write plots with friends. My favorite thing to do is screech at someone about an idea I’ve had and develop it from there. I couldn’t have written Before We Get Lost without yelling at you and @dresupi about it for weeks. Why did Clint and Darcy break up? Okay, why send them to Michigan? Is this scene necessary? etc, etc. I would be nowhere without someone to shout about all of this with, so give yourself a pat on the back.

Also I know your not being harsh at all in your other response because i completely agree it can't be cheating unless it's consensual and when it comes to topics like sexual assault especially if it's not a woman people don't take it seriously and i guess Im most worried about that, I do kinda rush the way i send asks and I'm gonna read over them more before clicking send, also yeah I consume a lot of media that don't appeal to me and certain things I thought I wouldn't like that I've ended up loving, I kinda spoil things for myself to see if I'll like it, it's hard with books to find spoilers sometimes so I'll just go on reviews Ive read because I need to get into the right headspace to read certain topics that are heavy like all your perfects (I learnt my lesson with iewu because the domestic violence aspect I was not expecting at all and I wasn't ready at that moment to read it)

okay good! i felt bad and didn’t want to make it seem like i was accusing you or anything - i was stating A truth but not trying to warp YOUR truth and didn’t want it to come off twisted or confrontational or anything like that. i don’t even think your ask came off saying that, especially since i knew what you meant, but i figured clearing up that gray space never hurts. but you’re all good :)

i’m actually kind of completely the opposite lol. i hateeeee spoilers of any kind and a lot of times won’t even read the summary or will try to wait and forget it before going into a book. i love to be surprised in as many ways as possible while reading. i’ve been on a sad book kick lately so i was in the right mind space when i read all your perfects because it was what i was looking for but even so, with such heavy topics that’s why i like storygraph for having an in depth content warning section on books that anyone can contribute to, and i’m glad to see the trend of authors putting content warnings at the front of their books slowly becoming more mainstream. it’s a good way for me to know, without being spoiled, what i’m getting into and/or if their are any sensitive topics i should either prepare for or just completely avoid by not reading the book
