late to the 25th year anniversary mark of oot but like

can we just... remember how absolutely mindblowing it was to play this game for the first time, and in the first half hour you get summoned by a giant talking tree who then opens its mouth so that you can dive deep into its cobwebbed vegetal insides to battle a horrible spider crawling above your head in a dark underground room --and then you win, and the tree dies anyway, tells you about a mystical legend and send you on your way?

and then you leave the forest and the world is *so vast*?

I feel like we (including myself) sort of take this opening for granted nowadays, but the absolute shock I felt when playing this for the first time? My tiny self already loved videogames back then, but I had basically zero experience with 3D or games that focused more on story or mood, and the sheer peculiar mood that blended the epic, the childlike fun, the mystical and the offputting and creepy smacked me across the face so hard I never truly recovered

They hired me for medieval woodcut art and now I'm doing '70 poster art. I feel like it's my fault. I mean it is, I recommended them going that route, it's a ttrpg about a hippie cult unaware that they are traveling in a spaceship through the universe, there might be some medieval thingies but there's nothing significantly medieval woodcut about that. Theres space drugs and brainwashed people and even police. Also I've always wanted to try that art style.

Well, let's just say that Barty is very happy with his answers when he finds himself sitting against the headboard an hour later. Reg bounces up and down in his lap, riding him, still in the top of the lingerie (the panties sadly didn't survive it 😔), with his hands on Bartys knees and his head thrown back. James sits besides Barty, focussed at his task of kissing down Bartys neck and flicking his nipples with his tongue while jerking himself.

Neither Debbie nor Pierce are very pop culture savvy (due to Debbie's upbringing and Pierce's...Pierceness). Debbie likes reading and watching anything romance (whether fluff or..sensual), and listening to her collection of 3 CDs over and over again (This is Tom Petty's and ABBA's greatest hits + Fleetwood Mac's Rumours in human AU).

Pierce finds it hard to get engaged in fiction. She listens to radio friendly rock when driving and thats about it. She gets into poetry when she is older as well as videogames "against her will".

8. Has your OC ever had a crush on a fictional (to them) character?

Debbie absolutely, but i think it would often bleed into (weird) celebrity crushes. Pierce no.

15. How well would your OC do in a standard slasher movie?

Assuming that they are both human they would die extremely early. Debbie would accidentally get herself killed, Pierce would hear her scream and try to rescue her and also get killed.

29. Gun to their head, what is your OC’s fursona?

I you asked their canon selves (and explained to them the concept): Debbie would say shes a kitty cat and not think anything of it. Pierce would have no clue and would be assigned by Vireo to be a rhinoceros.

In a hypothetical situation where they ARE furries already: Debbie's sona would be a "Faerie mouse", a limegreen cartoon rodent with insect wings that looks like it came from the 90s. Pierce's would be a a seminaturalistic lioness woman.

i wonder what kind of areas the rest of the ISAT gang's journey brought them to. like, the rest of the hypothetical videogame.

at first i was thinking there wouldn't be as much room for area diversity as in other games given the game's generally realistic geography, but thinking about it there's a lot you could do with the concept of stuff being frozen in time.

imagine an area that's a forest that was in the middle of a forestfire when it got frozen. it's in a perpetual state of burning but all the fire is perfectly still. there's ash that was falling from the sky but is now stuck floating in the air.

maybe the funniest and most telling/damning thing about the whole forced AI art horseshit is that of all the actual artists who might sensibly stand to benefit from it, or otherwise end up on the wrong side of this argument, the guys out there churning out boring unimaginative porn at a breakneck pace haven't adopted AI at all...

The guys who aren't particularly good artists. Don't have any unique artistic vision they're achieving or putting out into the world. The guys that live and die by their twitter post count. Churning out the same 3 poses and the same 1 bodytype with just a rotating assortment of topically popular cartoon/videogame characters... Those guys.

Not only did they not make the jump to AI generated porn. They didn't even incorporate AI into their workflow. Like, while I would not have been surprised if some of these guys had absolutely zero artistic integrity and put down their pen/stylus entirely, I also would have at least expected a good chunk of them to fall somewhere in the middle on this issue and embrace using AI to render their handdrawn lineart and increase the speed at which they produce their low quality art. Especially the ones who already have so much crap that they actually could train an AI learnset on their own work.

Yet such a hypothetical guy just straight up doesn't exist somehow. It's incredibly telling that the people verymuch at the bottom of the totempole of the artistic community at large don't seem to see any use for AI art.

Spring 23 | Nova Wilder

Character I made for a class in freshman year. Assignment was to create a character for a piece of media (show, game, comic, etc.) and create a turnaround, portrait/action shot, environment and object page. Obviously not all of those are present. I just want to share the portrait and the turnaround. Nova was created for a hypothetical videogame where you play as Nova, exploring a world, cataloging the flora and fauna and solving puzzles and helping people.

I've said before that my plans for post-canon is Tenko(and yes he does eventually go back to that name) unfortunately does have to be in custody but given circumstances it's a high-security mental health center instead of just yeeting him in jail, and as his mental health improves he is allowed to do more and yeah getting back into videogames and streaming is on the table for him.

Gov would have difficulty thinking of fun things to do and he'd also be really really overly concerned about dropping the little on their head (even though he probably doesn't even try to lift the little because he knows he doesn't lift) i feel he might keep some small toys in a basket in his office for meetings, not necessarily for regressors but that wouldn't stop him from not only letting any regressors use them but also be listening to see what he could add to the basket

California is not someone i would trust for more than a day with my hypothetical child, but i see him playing with a little with his plushies, he'd also would like playing video games with them occasionally just not plugging in controllers just to see if they will notice (it really depends on who we're dealing with) he's also probably really overly concerned but more he researches diseases and gets really worried his temporary children may have it

Florida would be the caregiver to let you watch happy tree friends. He probably is being watched over by another state if he is caregiving anyone. He's very high energy and athletic so he's more than able to play with you, he would also be chill with giving his little his glasses if it's too bright outside he probably lets you watch him do dangerous stuff (from a distance lol) probably involving fire

New York would show you his many pigeons and rats and show you how to pet him. He would play videogames with littles as well he would also make sure to keep the environment fairly quiet he's surprisingly physically affectionate and he's more than willing to hug others if you want

Texas mainly would like reading to his littles or watch some older TV shows with them. He's one of the few i could see wanting actual kids and just being overall really really happy taking care of others so of course he's into baking stuff for others especially if he's just in a caring mood and whoever is regressed under his care is a test subject for whatever he makes

Louisiana helps littles make jewelry of course and we all know he's a good cook he mainly makes more savory dishes (probably for the best with the surgery stuff you'd get from Florida or Texas) he also has more bitter candies in a jar somewhere he might share if you asked, unlike Florida he is not fit and doing too much physical activity will hurt him but he will still try to play with more still games, maybe he'd bring out board and card games to play so perfect if you can't or won't move, you could also nap in a rocking chair with him

hiiii welcome back to the gay people. the first image is based off of kiss by death by bruna kazinoti! gonna go on a very long ramble about why exactly blueberry and mango are Like This below the cut. before that here's some more textposts

okay! so the main thing About Them is that they're both very mentally ill. mango is so driven with purpose and revenge that he's gonna kill himself to get rid of minecraft. blueberry is so utterly empty and purposeless that he is constantly passively suicidal. if you throw two people like that at each other they fucking explode, right? yeah it's great. because they almost balance each other out, if you look at it right! blueberry tamps down on mango's preemptive self-destruction and mango cuts through blueberry's apathy to give him a reason to live. hypothetically they're fine. the thing is that they're still both super mentally ill

like, okay- blueberry keeps mango from working himself to death. what he doesn't do is ever try to dissuade mango from trying to destroy minecraft. because that's not The Point. the things that pull them together are the things that are going to destroy them. mango is attracted to blueberry’s calmness and apathy but that character trait only arises in the ways that it does due to blueberry's incredible depression. blueberry likes mango’s sense of purpose and internal fire except that fire is burning him alive and it's gonna drive him to try to kill an entire videogame's worth of sentient beings. the things that draw them together are going to kill them and neither of them are going to stop it, is the thing! why would they? like honestly as if they went into this relationship to get better? don't be ridiculous they don't even really have proper conversations about their problems, they just sort of pingpong off of each other and make each other worse

(literally any time one of them doesn't want to talk about something they just start making out. unofficial "shut up and kiss me" rule. this is really funny to me personally and it's a decent indicator of the way this whole ship functions)

so that's the main thing. it basically affects every single aspect of their silly little relationship. for example it's implicitly understood that there's a timer strapped to this relationship and all of this is temporary because mango's probably gonna go run off and destroy minecraft and die within a year or two (and then blueberry can sink back into his empty husk of a life and carry on until someday he finally slips off of a building and dies), so they're lowkey out here perpetually treating their relationship like a short-term thing even when they've been doing this for like, 8 months. i think they've only ever gone on one actual date pre ep-30

i will say that at some point within that time they do start genuinely liking each other for their personalities and not just their mental illness, which is neat! i should fucking hope they did! this is helpful for post ep-30 content because it means they'll probably get less toxic later down the line when mango gets redeemed

NPC concept I can't stop thinking about

Imagine an NPC in a videogame, and if you talk to them, they describe a pleasant experience and then say "let me tell you... that's better than sex."

And if you talk to them again, they make the case that a completely different experience or thing is better than sex, and they have a gigantic number possible things they could say are better than sex.

Some are nice.

"Sitting outside on a blanket in a field of wildflowers, watching the butterflies and bees pollinate the flowers, let me tell you... that's better than sex."

"Cuddling on the couch with your best friend, not really watching what on TV and just enjoying their company, let me tell you... that's better than sex."

Some are really weird to be saying to you, a stranger. A bit TMI

"I've been putting more fiber in my diet, and my constipation is gone! I poop so much easier now, and let me tell you... that's better than sex."

"The relief that swept through me when the doctor said that lump tested negative for cancer, let me tell you... that's better than sex."

This character would have 100s of lines of dialogue or half of all the dialogue in the entire game, whichever is larger.

And if you somehow get through all of their possible dialogue, they say this:

"Sex isn't everything. It's okay to be in a relationship where one partner doesn't have sex. It's okay to be celibate. It's okay to not be a sexual or romantic relationship with someone. Sex is just one of the many, many activities that we can do with another person. The realization that there's more beauty and wonderful and joy in life beyond just sex, let me tell you... that's better than sex."

And it has nothing to do with the story or what the hypothetical game this NPC would be from is about. I just think it would be a funny NPC gag.

Talen Month 2024!

Welcome to Talen Month here on press dot invincible dot ink!

A pattern has formed, a groove has been worn, and I treat April as a month in which I’m going to focus on writing about indulgent, entirely self-serving nonsense. No topic is too niche, no character exploration too unnecessary, and no corner case complaint about some other nonsense is too specific for me to do it if it tickles me distinctly and doesn’t also fit better into another theme month.

Like, c’mon, there’s gotta be something for Dread Month and Tricks Month. October and August if you’re new here.

But what does this actually mean?

The whole question of making a blog which is literally just my own daily writing, and then having a month dedicated to talking about myself or my interests seems when viewed at arm’s length like nonsense. Everything on this blog is stuff I care about. I’m always going to talk about things as they relate to me, duh. That’s the whole point, I didn’t train myself to understand and deploy autoethnography relentlessly because I wanted to pretend I didn’t exist.

If you go back and read earlier parts of the blog, you can find my posts from when I was trying to position myself as a neutral observer of videogames, and even then I found the idea of it stifling. Early Game Pile entries would include a list of reasons I could imagine someone wanting to play a game, and of course, that list was going to be filtered through my imagination and opinion. On the one hand it’s not that hard to have some empathy for a potential or imagined reader, and what might help a game or piece of media interest them. It’s hard to have empathy for every possible reader, and that’s where we start to get into the shape of you – the reader – that is in my head.

In my mind, you’re probably queer. Not necessarily, but probably. You at least are adjacent to queer spaces, since you got to found me. I don’t have an assumption that you’re a boy or a girl, though I think I probably joke around as if you’re a girl or girlthing more likely than you are a boy. I think I do that because I don’t think it’s interesting to joke about my reader being a boy — everyone does that. It’s much funnier to — accurately or not! — crack jokes about not liking girly games like Bloodbourne and Dwarf Fortress.

You’re younger than me. You watch anime and you play videogames, but you don’t read as many books as you like. I think this because I think that I think of reading books as interesting and a way to broaden your horizons, but I also don’t read as many books as I’d like. Sometimes this is because my day can consist of choking through six dense chapters of four different books and sometimes it’s because it’s a lot easier to put the TV on and let twenty episodes of Bluey happen.

You’re more of a console gamer. I can talk to you about old PC games from the 1990s and I need to explain how they work or what life was like for people interested in that play space, because you don’t know what I’m talking about. Not a cruel thing or a ignorance thing – I don’t think less of you for not knowing, but I think it’s worth explaining it. I think that part of that is because I think it’s interesting. When I dig into how Commander Keen works, being able to explain how the EGA processor worked is really me teaching myself something I half-understand, and then share with you because I … I like talking about it?

I definitely think there are words and topics you’d rather I avoid. I think that you don’t like seeing me be mean to things, or about things. I think that you’d rather not see me using generative media for bumpers in my posts, and that you either don’t care about my using of alt text or you care about it in hypothetical. The fact I’m trying to get in the habit for it is something you probably think ‘oh, that’s nice, that’s a good habit’ and that’s the end of it. I think that if there are people reading this who benefit from good alt text, there aren’t many of you, maybe one or two. I also think that that one or two are worth doing a good job for, as a matter of principle. But I also think if I screw up, or my alt text is bad, I’m not going to get told about it.

I think you used to be on twitter.

I think you think I’m interesting, but not cool.

I think you think my writing is engaging, but not deeply affecting. I think you’re really glad to see stuff on a website that’s being made and maintained and not being used to advertise. I think that if I started promoting or doing calls to action, you’d find that unappealing. You wouldn’t necessarily hate me for it, but it would be something that you didn’t have to deal with here, previously, but now you do have to deal with it, and that’d be a bummer.

I also think there’s a good chance every single thing I’ve looked at and thought ‘wow this sucks’ is someone’s favourite thing. I think, if I rubbish an anime or a game, I have pretty good chance that you are either really relieved to see someone finally talk critically about it, or you’re super bummed to see someone you respected talking about something you love cruelly. I think this is part of why I keep a mix going on: I think that you might tolerate a few sassy posts about something you like, but if I let my natural impulse to complain overwhelm me, you’d have a blog that’s grumpy and mad for several days in a row and that might just be enough to make you give up on checking.

I don’t think you check. I think you’re either using an RSS reader because you’re smart and cool and better than me with computers, or you see my work linked other places. The idea that my blog lives in a space like someone’s daily webcomic link folder is kinda nice but I have no idea if anyone else even does those any more.

This is mostly just anxieties, of course. I’m concerned about being seen a particular way. I’m afraid of behaving in a way that’s too much. I don’t want to make you feel like you shouldn’t bother checking. I want to share things that are funny and exciting with you. I also want to get better at writing and part of that is forcing variety, because otherwise I will default to cliche phrases and reusing jokes from a more successful Adams, whether that’s Douglas (very good) or Scott (very bad).

This month, I’m going to try and talk to you with less of the anxiety. More willingness to talk about things I normally skirt around. And yes, that means I will probably spend a lot of words focusing on some extremely niche nonsense or maybe diving way too deep in something I think you’d find dull.
