30 Day HypMic Challenge!
Double post today! Because I wasn't gonna be left behind~
DAY 7: CHARACTER YOU RELATE TO THE MOST/FAVOURITE CHARACTER EVER
🎭 NURUDE SASARA
There's two clauses to this day and Sasara kind of fits both, but mostly he goes here because he's my absolute favourite character in HypMic alongside Ramuda. But I do relate to this bad boi a bit, because if you couldn't tell, clowns who clown together stick together. :)
It took me forever to actually pick a favourite character in HypMic, because there's so many, and because I'm just kind of like that. Takes me a while to commit. :kekw:
And even when I did pick, I couldn't fully settle on one, because as I said, Sasara does share the spot with Ramuda. But I guess they're my favourites for some of the same reasons, but some different ones.
I remember liking Sasara as soon as I met him while listening to the drama tracks. I knew all of the characters already, but when I got to the DotsuHon track, I had never seen Sasara in action yet, I'd just read something off of the wiki and seen pictures of him. I had no strong opinions.
But oh boy was I about to have them.
I just loved him. I didn't expect him to be so smart and clever right off the bat. I was absolutely not expecting to perceive his depth so quickly, even through his usual funny and lighthearted persona. He immediately spoke to me, and I knew I was dealing with one that was going to become one of my favourite characters ever, not just in HypMic. My ult bias, if you will. *wink* (Sasara sits at the same table as Han Jisung in my brain. They should both feel honoured.)
Not to mention that he's, just, hot. Like, LOOK AT THE MAN. I know the orange matched with the green hair is a bit controversial but STILL the idea of a very polished looking outfit but in funky colours and with a silly pattern just feels perfectly in tune with his personality. It fits him! And that also means I get to salivate over him when they choose to remove his jacket in ARB cards. (Looking at you latest event - I was a mess for days.)
Obviously, knowing me, number 1 gay person and BL fan, my favourite character couldn't not be a gay little shit as well. That is something we have in common a stupid amount: both Sasara and I are gay disasters. We would have so much fun simping over men together while drinking tea. Also it is so hilarious that Sasara has such a fixed type in men I swear to god, the Rosho/MCD Samatoki parallels have me cackling every time. This man really replaced his ex he couldn't get over with basically the same guy but in white cum patate. Iconic move. For the history books.
Also, is anyone surprised that my favourite character is once again an ENTP fuckboy? No, I know. No one is. But birds of a feather come together, I guess, because I also am an ENTP fuckboy. :) I wasn't always - I guess this little bastard influenced me, together with some other assholes like Vanitas or Dazai or who knows who else. There's always one.
Should I cut the Sasara ramble short? Maybe. Maybe I should. Thanks to those who stuck around. Stan DotsuHon, stan Sasara. Ship SasaRosho. Peace out xoxo

Jakurai anon here 💖
Ramuda's hair is also a perfect match to the current gradient of the modern shibuya 109 signage!
I have always wondered if his ribbon was meant to represent the old one even though it wouldn't exist by the time he was created, he is shubiya incarnate, after all, and the original signage and branding for shibuya was was iconic.
(also a completely heacanon thing I know isn't real but... red string of fate ribbon for gen and dice..<3)
JAKURAI ANON U R SO REAL U R SO RIGHT !!!
I never actually noticed that Ramu shares the gradient of the 109 🙈🙈 but it’s such a cool detail !! Since that’s the case I think having the red be a callback to the original sign color isn’t too out of the question 🤔🤔
Reference for both eras of 109 here for those unfamiliar
I wonder if any of the other charas have design elements like this in their appearance tbh. A lot of their character design goes into their personal characterization but other than Ramu I think Sasara is the only other chara to have callbacks to his division in his design 🤔🤔 I say this cause my personal headcanon is that Sasara’s dark/light green hair is reminiscent of the roofing to the Osaka castle structure.
Reference for Osaka castle here for those unfamiliar
LIKE DO YOU SEE THE VISION ???
For a final related / unrelated note I think it’s nice thinking that MTC’s blue color could be a reference to the fact that Yokohama is a port city by the Pacific (ignore the fact that the blue is supposed to contrast to BB’s red and that Osaka and Nagoya are also ports 😣😣😣)
Pretty picture of Yokohama here cause I regret not visiting it when I went to Japan
Regarding the ribbon the red string of fate is a really cute theory ehehe. I had a dumb thought where I was like
“Oh Ramuda’s the only character to have red in his design that isn’t Ichi and his bros, Kuko, and Rei. Maybe it’s to tie him into the fact he was so impactful to Ichi’s life through mindhacking and such!!”
Before I remembered that Doppo and Rio are both gingers 🤧🤧🤧
Insert all the pretty art that Kazui (Hypmic chara designer) made for the anniversaries for references.

I was going through my dream notes for something and found that I dreamed Epel and Deuce got a new hypmic song SO here are my thoughts for Epel and Deuce's mics/speakers:
Deuce-
Basically Hitoya's speakers, but instead of a motorbike it's a blue blastcycle (or multiple? Since blastcycles seem to just be 1 wheel) anyway there could be one big blastcycle with multiple smaller tyres of the blastcycle modified as speakers and a small icon or smth that represents Deuce on it.
Deuce' mic is something that has a spade on it, matches with Ace who has a mic with a heart emblem somewhere on it. Probably a handheld one.
Epel-
Hmm. Maybe a giant apple but its been carved with some sort of figure on the inside, with pips as speakers. The speakers are both inside the giant apple and floating just outside it as if scattered. The apple is a colour combo of red/green/purple, two mains colour with one just as an accent. His mic is probably handheld and purple, with a small emblem on the end that looks like a hilt. Actually itd be interesting if on the mics is a small gem at the bottom which represents the magestone

And part 2!
Kuukou is the one main cast member who is undeniably a devout Buddhist. We see him following acetic practices, reciting sutras, quoting (often fake) Buddhist texts, and praying to the Buddha. Hmm...praying? Don't some forms of Buddhism discourage treating the Buddha as a deity? And the kind of harsh, acetic training he endures isn't universally practiced, right? Plus, he talks about reaching paradise or multiple forms of Buddhist hell...not to mention Buddhist deities/mythological or religious figures like Yama and the nagas. Which some forms of Buddhism reject altogether! Again, there are many different types of Buddhism in Japan, and Kuukou appears to practice...all of them. I doubt this decision was made to reflect a particular aspect of Kuukou's character so much as to avoid any stickiness in regard to real life controversial topics. (Hypmic is pretty keen to avoid IRL political issues, hence its aversion to pursing LGBT topics, avoidance of most serious discussions of gender, and jokey portrayal of Dice's homelessness and gambling addiction.) A syncretic mix of Buddhism prevents accusations of favoritism or misrepresentation. Plus, it also allows Buddhist readers of all types to identify with the character!
But you asked about Christianity and Jakurai in particular. Does Christianity exist in Hypmic and Japanese media in particular? There certainly is a non-insignificant number of Christians in Japan, but it's generally considered a minority religion. The Christian God, Jesus, and other major parts of the religion are common knowledge via Western domination of international culture and thought, but Christianity is often assumed to be a "Western" and therefore "foreign" religion by non-Christian writers. Hypmic characters would be aware of Christianity but are unlikely to follow it.
They might, however, consider it a cool aesthetic. Enter Juushi! In the vkei world and other youth subcultures, Christian symbols abound. One of vkei's main inspirations is the British gothic aesthetic, and Western religious or mythological icons. Juushi drops a ton of Western ideas and images (Cerberus, Arcadia, random French, Shakespeare references--just off the top of my head) in his speech and raps, and I wouldn't be surprised if Christian icons start showing up at some point too. There's nothing reverent about it; it just slaps. Iyogi, Juushi's middle school bully, wears a chain of crosses but is almost certainly not Christian. He just thinks they're metal as hell.
Therefore, Jakurai isn't Christian either. He's definitely "godlike" but not in the Christian sense of the term. In Japanese, it's common to refer to someone very good as "kami" or "god." This technically refers to the Shinto kami, but I don't think it's any more connected to religion in casual speech than someone saying "oh my god" in English. Shinto kami are also not the same as the Abrahamic God. While there are powerful, creator kami, most kami are simply viewed as otherworldly or slightly more powerful than humans. You might think of existence as a spectrum of talent or ability, with humans at one end and kami as the next stage onward in the spectrum. If Jakurai is compared to a "kami," it doesn't mean he thinks of himself as a creator, judge, or ruler of life. Nor is he completely almighty, as would be suggested by associating him with the God of Abrahamic religions. Instead, Jakurai is so very good at what he does that he's transcended humanity. This, in turn, makes him difficult to approach or empathize with on a human level--which is Hitoya's core struggle with him. (There's a bit at the end of their DRB match where Hitoya says "You seem so human now" and I struggled w/ that in the summary. Because that's what this refers to--you don't seem so removed. You seem like you're on my level. You normally do everything so well I never see evidence of your struggling, but now I can see that you're just like me, and I can empathize with you.) Incidentally, the shining light around Jakurai is indeed a motif of the divine, but it isn't the light of heaven. That is, it's not inherently benevolent. Light is a common motif in Japanese works for being very, very talented--again, like the Shinto kami. If you ever see works where translators keep being like, "This character is shining!" that's what they mean. This character is very, very good at whatever they're doing. If you see works where translators keep being like, "This character is dazzling!" then that's the exact same thing, but they just found a more natural way to phrase it. Ha ha ha.
Hi Slug!! I'm curious about some of the religious imagery in hypmic! Kuko is obvious and I think Doppo has talked about not believing in gods before but what's up with Jakurai? Is he meant to actually be Christian or is it just an aesthetic thing?
This ended up being so long Tumblr wouldn't let me put it all in one post. Hoo boy. Under a cut for length.
Usual disclaimer that I don't live in Japan, so I'm not talking about IRL Japan so much as Japanese media. Media isn't perfectly synonymous with real life and, of course, it's foolish to draw conclusions from the general (media and culture) and apply them to the specific (individual persons). With that being said, media is indicative of real life values and cultural concerns--for example, the American high school experience is a lot less interesting than in movies, but these movies reflect a romanticization of teenagehood so widespread in the US and areas with heavy US cultural influence that filmmakers take it for granted in their audiences--so I can talk about what assumptions inform the portrayal of religion in Hypmic.
As in a lot of Japanese media, religion is present but not explicitly mentioned outside of Kuukou. It's what I would call culturally religious as opposed to actively religious. Similar to how many works in the Anglosphere are steeped with Christian ideas and phrases even if the authors/works themselves aren't Christian (the Christian concept of sin, using "God" or variations as an interjection, etc.), many works written in Japanese are influenced by Shinto and Buddhist ideas. Some people in Japan are active worshipers of Shinto, Buddhism, or both, but many more have a somewhat relaxed approach. It's not uncommon for people to have a belief in a higher power, but the nature of this higher power isn't terribly well-defined. Many people will attend religious ceremonies for holidays or funerals but rarely pray to a higher power outside of moments of great stress. That is, being culturally religious. Traditions are fun and comforting, especially if they involve dressing up in fancy clothes, eating yummy food, and seeing friends and family. Even if you're not especially devout, it doesn't hurt to pray for a bit of luck before a big test, that your child will grow up healthy and strong, or that your recently departed ancestor will be at peace. For those in predominately Christian areas, you probably see plenty of this in your community--people who maybe go to church occasionally for companionship or holiday celebrations but aren't active worshipers. Or, perhaps, people who pray like, "Hey, if anyone's listening, can you lend me a hand?" Maybe you're even one of these people yourself. We can generally assume that most of the cast falls into this camp. Doppo and Hifumi go to a festival with a religious element--charms and rituals to bring good luck by appealing to Shinto deities--but I doubt either of them have a firm belief that these particular deities exist. They may think that there's some higher power...or not. But what's the harm in a good luck charm, right? And more importantly, it's fun to play games, eat, drink, and horse around with friends! But wait, does that mean these two are only Shinto or...Shinto-ish? Probably not. There's an expression that most Japanese people are "born Shinto, but die Buddhist." Shinto rituals tend to focus on matters of the living (although Shintoism has its own distinct funerary rites, sometimes combined with Buddhist rites), while non-devout Buddhists usually participate in Buddhist ceremonies only when loved ones die. We see Juushi and Hitoya with loved ones buried in Buddhist cemeteries, but it's safe to assume both observe Shinto holidays and customs in some fashion. We also see in the very beginning of TDD that Nemu and Samatoki have what appears to be a butsudan--a Buddhist altar--in their home dedicated to their deceased parents. "But wait," some might say, "I thought spirit worship isn't a part of Buddhism." That's true for some forms of Buddhism, but not all! Buddhism is enormously varied, and some of the (many, many!) forms of Buddhism practiced in Japan accept aspects of Shintoism. There's plenty of mixing, just as we see within individuals themselves. Again, the Hypmic characters may not fully believe that spirits exist. (Well, outside of Ramuda...) But it's a comforting thought that one's deceased family members are around in some form and can be a positive influence on one's life.

Round 5 — Shian: “So that’s it. We’re at the peak of our Miss Hypmic Pageant. People tend to see the finale as the most important part of the show, where they can really go all out. Which is fine, but that can lead to a tendency to overdo or overthink their piece.”
“Lola Takahashi… Now, her look is a little costumey, but that aside, the big flowy sleeves against the skin-tight clothes is a nice pair together. I wish the color of her feathered wings matched her fit more and that she could’ve done more with her hair, but overall, it’s a nice look for a finale.”
“Sumire Shinomiya. Less glamour, more horror. It’s casual, but it works well. It’s not a great pageant finale look, but she did pull together this nightmare concept well. It’s sort of a modernized take on a hungryWendigo. She did have to explain the concept of her look for it to all make sense, which is pretty disappointing, but based on the look alone with the horns, outfit, and makeup, it’s pretty well thought out for the theme she went with.”
“Makina Setsukura went for a less scary route and tried to own this round by using the stage, makeup, a gorgeous prop, and emitting an intimidating aura. I could see what she was going for, that the whole scary part is that she didn’t appear scary, but the actual nightmare concept on her gown got kinda lost. Gorgeous pageant finale dress paired with a creepy stage, but it’s not the look for this ‘nightmare mode’ theme.”
“Queen Card’s look is a bit crowded, there’s a lot happening with her skirt— to the point where it looks kinda messy. She’s got a great silhouette, with the sheer veil and the big frilly skirt. I do really love the concept of a ghost queen and the way her crown and body paint pulls it all together, but I hoped to see a cleaner execution. Wait… dammit, Morimoto! Your stupid puns are rubbing off on me!”
“So I really liked Kanra Akemi’s prop. It could’ve fit her outfit better, which, by the way, does look like a straight-up costume. The fabric quality is too shiny. On the plus note, I liked that she balanced the red on her cloak and her red eyes with what was in her bird cage. Quality aside, she put together a pretty good finale costume.”
“Never did I think I’d see Kaoru Shinozaki so glamorous-looking. The colors pair well together, she has a beautiful overall silhouette, and her accessories go perfectly well with her gown. Even the shoes, the thing that people often disregard. No complaints here, job well done for your finale.”
“Most casual we’ve seen for this finale. Aranai Norikoru, I liked the original take on a tribute to a horror film icon and I think she played to the nightmare concept pretty damn well. Her stage matches the concept well, I liked the individual pieces and how they paired well together. But this is still a pageant— the finale for crying out loud. We need to see more.”
“Evelyn Rose’s outfit less fits the ‘nightmare mode’ concept, but the makeup makes up for it. I did like that she opted for accessories and body paint to get her message across, but I do want to see more horror in her actual outfit. That aside, her actually outfit is really pretty and the monochromatic color scheme is well thought out. Loved the top and the way she did her mermaid tail. She’s just beautiful here.”
“Don’t love the silhouette that Lana Alairie went with, it’s downright unflattering. I appreciate the plague doctor concept, but she could’ve done more to give us a spectacle for this pageant finale. The individual pieces, I liked, such as the hat, the mask, the the skirt. Didn’t even go the overdone glamour route and somehow still managed to put together an overcrowded and messy piece.”
“Now Kanade Alairie, on the other hand, is a step up. It’s very busy with all the patterns, accessories and frills, but it suited her concept well and she broke up the clusters with a cropped top and big skirt. Playful, mystical, and a bit spooky and campy. Plus the doll makes for a cute accessory.”
“Loved the big, sheer fabric Mizuki Minami threw over herself. It makes for a big, grand silhouette. Paired with the large, gorgeous witch hat, the long gown that looks amazing on her, and even her prop that I love so much. I liked the use of repetition of accessories, it makes the outfit more cohesive.”
“Now there’s a lot to unpack with Koyumi’s outfit. It’s very, very busy. But it’s… alright here? Like I kind it less in this outfit. The hair, the bloodied makeup, the gown, the shoes, the props, hell, even the stage. I don’t even mind that her overall look borders onto messy. I guess the use of blue and white helps cool down the look and breaks up all the warm reds. It just looks good.”
“Not fond of Moriko Himawari’s green makeup against the reds and the purple tint to her feathered wings. It clashes. Anyway, I appreciate the Gion girls’ tribute to Japanese mythology. The wings paired with the play on an A-line silhouette is an interesting route. Would’ve liked to see a cleaner finale outfit, but she gave us a fascinating stage with amazing stage presence.”
