toki, jan Punki o! Do you speak languages other than English? Which one is most cool to you?
OUGH i do not but i wanna fix that! genuinely really wanna learn spanish, I unfortunately didn't get the chance to start learning until later in high school. I think once i graduate I'd love to get back to learning it. that and japanese, even if it's a huge bitch to learn sometimes, because I think there's so much cool literature I want to read in the language it was written in if I get the chance.
#mostly bc im reading hyperart thomasson and thats really interesting to me and i wonder how it reads in the native language!#still a blast to read translated tho#my posts#asks#janwaso

The Wonderful, Useless World of the Hyperart Thomasson

From staircases that lead to nowhere, to doors that open out to fatal drops, 'Thomassons' are architectural oddities generally described as 'useless, but still maintained'. I wrote a bit about them for the Sabukaru site. Read the full thing here...

Hyperart Thomasson is amazing thank you for sharing that, I don't think I've ever heard of it.
My museum has these like small ledges/shelves inserted into the walls that were originally made to hold specific statuettes back when that space was a gallery for a specific artist, but all of that has been changed a long time ago and only the ledges remain.
Also if/when you figure out what the physical manifestation of the parts of history that don't make the cut looks like, we need to make a museum exhibition about it.
Going through a notepad sorting shit out. I have a page with - I think - the start of some sort of knitting design, with ‘Hyperart Thomason’ written below it. Off to the side I wrote ‘finally’ three times.
On the other side is a list of all the different rollercoasters you can make in Rollercoaster Tycoon, a box with ‘Wed 19th 8:10’ in it, and then at the bottom of the page: ‘the physical manifestation of the parts of history that don't make the cut’.
So like, if someone could tell me what that’s about, that’d be great. Sounds cool.

Hyperart Thomasson
(Japanese: Tomason トマソン or Chōgeijutsu Tomason 超芸術トマソン) is a type of conceptual art named by the Japanese artist Akasegawa Genpei in the 1980s. It refers to a useless relic or structure that has been preserved as part of a building or the built environment, which has become a piece of art in itself. These objects, although having the appearance of pieces of conceptual art, were not created to be viewed as such. Akasegawa deemed them even more art-like than art itself, and named them "hyperart."
The term Thomasson comes from the professional baseball player Gary Thomasson, who was signed by the Yomiuri Giants for a record-breaking sum of money, and spent his final two seasons with the team (1981–1982) coming close to setting the league strikeout record before being benched.[2] Akasegawa viewed Thomasson's useless position on the team as a fitting analogy for "an object, part of a building, that was maintained in good condition, but with no purpose, to the point of becoming a work of art.
