Beloved, this is literally my love language and you KNOW that 💖💖💖 A few of these are either not quite middle-aged or only one of the two members is, but here we go:

Allen Hynek & Michael Quinn, Project Blue Book- Listen, I know Allen Hynek was a real person, but the version of him in this TV series is very fictional and my version is even more so 🤣My top WIP right now is an aromantic-Allen fic which I am going to tentatively say is ALMOST done. It's what I'm usually working on in sprints (and I'm going to say something bold here: there's one passage in this that may be some of my favorite words I've ever written.) This pairing has the cocky fighter pilot/nerdy professor dynamic we've all been waiting for. The show is enjoyable if not outstanding, cancelled 1 season before it should have ended, and the fandom is not nearly big enough.

Irving & Burt, Severance- The ULTIMATE canon yearning! I've been working on a fic about them for months, but the fact that there's so much mystery associated with this show means that trying to write a romantic interaction with them outside of Lumon is proving complicated, lol. I've written pretty much all of it except the part that requires any explanation of the logistics of this show's universe. IDK, I am just deeply drawn to the vulnerability of two people whose knowledge of each other is confined to this very limited existence, stepping outside of that place's boundaries and discovering each other in the process. This fic has Irv and Burt flirting over classical music as well; between pieces I'm going to mention in the fic and other non-classical pieces that remind me of the pairing, I'm tempted to include a playlist along with this when I publish it.

Ted Lasso & Trent Crimm, Ted Lasso- Okay, okay, I don't have any solid WIPs about these two at the moment (there's one I started a long time ago that is in sleep mode until I figure out what I want to do with it), but Season 3 premieres March 15th and Trent Crimm apparently plays a "significant role" in it, so you KNOW I will have ideas in the very near future. I enjoy writing these two so much; they have such unique voices and that is so much fun to play with as a writer. Plus this trope is like grumpy/sunshine if the sunshine was secretly a clinically anxious mess of a human and the grumpy's harsh exterior was only a facade and he was unexpectedly very willing to have an open mind and see the good in someone.

Murray Bauman & Alexei, Stranger Things- (Alexei probably isn't quite "middle aged" here, but I'm including this anyway) Another underrated pairing, but I love their dynamic. Two people on opposite sides who could very easily be bitter enemies, but who (in the show, in canon) instead bond with each other so quickly! They snark and sass, but Murray is quite literally the only person who speaks Alexei's language, in personality as well as in actual words. I've already written fic for them, and I thought that was gonna be it, but I have more to say, lol

There are so many more middle-aged gays I love but haven't written for too! Truly we are in our best era with all of these wonderful pairings.

✅- What's something that appears in your fics over and over and over again, even if you don't mean to?

Hmmm, maybe little pieces of physical affection? Even when I am writing (or trying to lol) angst, I always manage to find excuses for my characters to touch each other (in fluffy ways!). Maybe it's bc I am a physical affection girl and NONE OF OTHER THE PEOPLE IN MY LIFE ARE so I could be projecting.

🤩- Who is your favorite character to write?

That's so tough. I rarely ever write more than two fics for any one fandom/ship, so it makes it a little harder for me really get familiar. If I had to pick one, it might be Captain Quinn from Project Blue Book. My magnum opus in his pov has been in the works for years but you can read another shorter fic for pbb here if you're interested! This one is from Allen's perspective, however... whoops!

I also have an unpublished Athelstan/Ragnar reincarnation fic that is a BLAST to write from Ragnar's POV, because he's such a volatile and passionate character and also just so in love with Athelstan that my fingers almost trip over themselves trying to write words from his lips.

🤗- What advice would you give to new fanfic writers that are just getting started?

DO WHAT YOU LOVE! You should write fanfic for yourself first and foremost. Let your passion take center stage! The first things I ever wrote were a complete mess of me joining half a dozen different couples across multiple fandoms all in a book club together... I even had a rotary schedule for who got what month. It was insane! And embarrassing! And aimed at nobody else but me. I loved it. JUST KEEP WRITING! :)

I need to post a snippet from this Project Blue Book fic featuring aromantic Allen that I’ve been working on, because it’s taking up way too much space in my brain

Hi everyone, the idea of aromantic Allen Hynek came to me the last few times I’ve rewatched Project Blue Book, and I just need to get some of these words out of my own head. I know there’s hardly any fandom for this, especially months and months after the show’s cancellation, but maybe it will make some small corner of the fandom happy!

Allen doesn’t like to be kissed on the mouth very much—even during sex, he prefers to limit it—so Michael has taken to kissing him anywhere and everywhere else: his shoulder, his neck, his cheek or his temple, even once a peck on the nose that leaves Allen stunned and laughing.

“You are a child,” Allen stammers, but his grin is wide, and he pulls Michael in and initiates a rare kiss to his lips. It happens so infrequently that every time it leaves Michael reeling. He must have a dumbfounded look on his face when they pull apart, because Allen laughs in his abrupt way and lightly pats Michael’s cheek.

Michael trails after him as he turns to leave. “Do it again,” he says, and he means for it to come out teasing, flirtatious, but it’s strangely vulnerable instead.

Allen turns around, then. He looks at Quinn with unmistakeable fondness. Then, with practiced ease, he draws the other man close and lets their lips seal together for a long, tender moment. They’re both smiling afterwards, Quinn with puppy-dog excitement and Allen with muted, almost bemused affection. Quinn finds himself wondering what Allen gets out of kissing him, on the rare times he does it.

(He asks him once, sitting in the lowered bed of a pick-up truck they rented to get around some back-country town following a mysterious lead. Allen looks at him for a moment as though perplexed by the question, like the reasons behind it had never even occurred to him. Finally he says, “Did you know Mimi loves pecan pie?”

The segue throws Quinn for a loop. “Doc, how could I possibly know that?” he asks, laughing despite his confusion.

Allen leans back on his hands, one long line of lithe body. “She can’t get enough of it,” he says. “Wants to have it every Thanksgiving. I don’t really care for it much, but sometimes just to surprise her, I’ll pick up a few slices from the bakery on my way home from work. It always makes her so happy. She gets this—this smile on her face.” Allen turns his body toward Michael then. He takes Michael’s chin in his hand like he’s sizing up the expression on his face—and then lets him go, and presses his palm to Michael’s cheek tenderly instead.

They sit there in a moment of suspended animation, the crickets and the wind in the trees feeling loud in such otherwise heavy quiet. “That’s what I get out of it,” Allen says, and lies back on the truck to look at the stars.)
