Walk In The Light | Hymn
Chorus:Â
Walk in the light, beautiful light, come where the dewdrops of mercy shine bright. Oh shine all around us by day and by night, Jesus is, Jesus is the light of the world; Â Oh we shall walk in the light, beautiful light, come where the dewdrops of mercy shine bright. Oh shine all around us by day and by night, Jesus is, Jesus is the light of the world;
Verse 1:Â
No need to worry, no need to fret, all of my needs, the man named Jesus has met. His love protects me from hurt and from harm, Jesus is, Jesus is the light of the world.
Verse 2:
If the gospel be hid, it's hid from the lost, my Jesus is waiting to look past your faults. Arise and shine, your light has come, Jesus is, I know that He is the only light of this world.

Hi, I've finished the Illiad and Odyssey not so long ago, and I'm a little bit confused.
In those texts, characters or narrator sometimes refer to Zeus as "the oldest of gods." I've read these on my native language, so I decided there was some translation problem, but then I've came across couple of English posts also talking about Zeus as the oldest and yes, I understand that posts people write aren't the best source of information but along with what I've read in the poems it made me doubting.
So, are there some versions of the myths where Zeus is the oldest? Or is it simply a translation or interpretation problem, like "the oldest" in the meaning "the strongest/wisest/greatest/etc"?
I will be very thankful for the explanation because somehow, this made me so confused.
No problem! Although Zeus is almost always presented as the youngest son from Hesiod onwards, he is in fact described as the oldest in the Iliad. For example, when he sends Iris with a message to Poseidon:
"I came here bearing a message for you, dark-haired holder of the earth, from Zeus who wields the aegis. He commands you to desist from war and battle and to go among the tribe of gods, or into the bright salt sea. And if you do not obey his words, but ignore them, he threatens that he too will come here to do battle, face-to-face; and he bids you avoid his hands, since he says he is more powerful by far than you in strength and in birth is elder." (Il. 15. 174-182)
One could suspect Zeus is bending the truth or being metaphorical in claiming primogeniture (considering the other more popular tradition) but the Iliad states it as a literal fact, as evidenced by Iris' response to Poseidon when he says that Zeus can snorkel his dongle:
"Is it in this way then, dark-haired holder of the earth, I should bear this harsh and powerful word to Zeus, or will you change your mind at all? The minds of the great are yielding. And you know the Furies always attend the elder born." (Il. 15. 201-204)
Meaning if conflict were to arise the Furies would side with Zeus because he the is older sibling. Hera is likewise here the eldest of the goddesses, and there's no reason to suppose it's not meant literally.
Curiously, quite the opposite interaction occurs in the Odyssey. If in the Iliad Poseidon has to give way to Zeus' bullying because Zeus is the eldest, in the Odyssey it is Zeus who, though still supreme king, gives way to Poseidon because here Poseidon is the eldest:
"Then in turn Zeus who gathers the clouds made answer: âWhat a thing to have said, Earthshaker of the wide strength. The gods do not hold you in dishonor. It would be a hard thing if we were to put any slight on the eldest and best among us. But if there is any man who, giving way to the violence and force in him, slights you, it will be yours to punish him. Now and always. Do as you will and as it pleases you.â" (Od. 13. 139-145)
Ancient authors were not unaware of the contradiction, and there seem to have been attempts to reconcile both traditions, like in the Homeric Hymn to Aphrodite, where it's said of Hestia:
"She was the first-born child of wily Kronos and youngest too, by the will of Zeus who holds the aegis." (Hom. Hymn. 5. 22-23)
No further explanation is given, but it's widely assumed that this is a reference to Kronos disgorging his children in the reverse order in which he swallowed them, ie. rock first and Hestia last (Hes. Th. 500 and Apollod. 1.2.1). The imagery of Kronos "rebirthing" his kids from his throat is... explicitly, used by Nonnos in the Dionysiaca when describing the scene:
"How he [Kronos] opened a gaping throat to receive a stony son, when he made a meal of the counterfeit body of a pretended Zeus; how the stone played midwife to the brood of imprisoned children, and shot out the burden of the parturient gullet" (Book 12. 43)
[Describing a shield that depicts Kronos swallowing the stone] "There he was again in heavy labour, with the stone inside him, bringing up all those children squeezed together and disgorging the burden from his pregnant throat." (Book 25. 553)
"And these dwelt in the city of Beroe, that primordial seat which Kronos himself built, at that time when, invited by clever Rhea, he set that jagged supper before his voracious throat, and having the heavy weight of that stone within him to play the deliverer's part, he shot out the whole generation of his tormented children. Gaping wide, he sucked up the storming flood of a whole river, and swallowed it in his bubbling chest to ease his pangs, then threw of the burden of his belly; so one after another his pregnant throat pushed up and disgorged his twiceborn sons through the delivering channel of his gullet." (Book 41. 65)
Hope I could be of help! And that Nonnos hasn't traumatised anyone too much.
#ask#sorry if I rambled#Kronos and Rhea is literally recreated in the 2022 film Resurrection#I love that actress and I could watch her read the phone book#Zeus#greek mythology#greek myths#greek gods#tagamemnon#hellenic deities#the iliad#the odyssey#Poseidon#Hera#Kronos#Rhea#Hestia#i was slightly disappointed by the film though

The Raven's Hymn - Ch 43
Pairing: SCP-049 x Reader
Series Warnings: Eventual smut, dubcon, slow burn, violence, horror, death, monsters, human experiments, dark with a happy ending
Chapter Summary: âI regret it has come to this, my dear.â
AO3
Perhaps knowing you were âsafeâ for the remainder of the day, 049 waited to enact his plan. You were grateful to have at least one more night with him. You didnât know what would happen when it started. You didnât know what youâd do it if went wrong.
Dread settled in your stomach worse than any time preceding. Youâd thought waiting for the humiliation of Leahyâs program was like waiting for an execution. Youâd been sorely mistaken. At least youâd had an idea of what he wanted. This was... unknowable. Dangerous. Terrifying.
All you could do was wait for 049 to make the first move. But for now, you laid in bed with him, pressed to his chest and listening to his heartbeat against your ear. It was a steady, soothing rhythm you hoped would continue beyond tomorrow.
Or maybe his plan wouldnât happen tomorrow. You didnât know when he would cause the distraction. There was too much you didnât know, and no way to discuss it with him. There was, of course, the possibility of another shower, but you knew if you held him close like that one more time, you wouldnât be able to let him go. The thought of what the guards would do to him tomorrow was enough to stir the borderline panic in your veins.
As if sensing your distress, 049 stroked his gloved fingers along your hair. It hadnât escaped your notice how often he touched you now. Whatever barrier had previously kept him at a polite distance seemed to have vanished. Your own defenses had been brought down, and 049 had always been effective at getting around them anyway.
The morning came too soon from restless sleep. You didnât move at the slot opening to deliver breakfast, you simply pressed yourself closer, breathing in deep the hollow space between his neck and the edge of his hood.
049 shuddered and wrapped his arm more firmly around your waist. You closed your eyes, taking another breath to steady yourself. It would be so easy to keep going, to surrender to your new normal. You might even have considered it, if not for the whole point of the program. The possibility of a child, and then of letting them be taken by the Foundation, wasnât something you could accept. Not if there was a chance of escape.
But deciding to escape didnât mean you wouldnât miss this part of your captivity. You were too scared to think of the possibilities of âafter.â Just surviving and leaving the facility was impossible enough; trying to imagine life afterwards was like trying to imagine what itâs like to live in the aphotic zone. You had no point of reference.
You both remained that way, quiet and secure in each otherâs warmth. 049âs fingers caressing slowly up and down your back, your own tracing along the subtle wrinkles that marked his robes. Underneath the layers of hide was a human skeleton, the only marked difference in the skull. His brain casing was larger, but more startling than that was the beak that grew directly over his mouth. His human teeth could even be seen by X-ray, trapped behind the chitinous structure that protruded from his face. It was why no one could figure out how he ate or drank when he chose to, as no one had seen the beak open before. Hell, no one was even sure how he spoke.
Perhaps if you survived, youâd ask him. You didnât know if he was human once, or if he had always been this way. Had someone given him the name Valens, or had he chosen it himself? There were still so many questions, but despite that, you liked who he was, what he was, and you wouldnât change anything. Your only regret was that you would never be able to kiss him properly.
The intercom clicked.
âTonight.â
You winced.
049 drew you closer, which you didnât think was possible, but he managed it by slipping your leg between his. He didnât need to say anything. You knew it had to happen today. There would be no tonight.
Unwilling, and after a time, you sat up first, your body sluggish with reluctance. 049 did the same, leaving the bed so you would be able to follow. He always positioned himself between you and the door, and it was probably the reason you slept at all these days.
Going through the motions of breakfast, you kept 049 in the corner of your vision. Not just because you wanted to be ready for his distraction, but... you couldnât help it. The dreaded sense at the back of your thoughts that told you this would be the last time you ever saw him.
You hit the shower after, half-hopeful you would be joined, but you washed alone. It didnât take more than a few minutes for you to finish, not wanting 049 to be out of your sight for long. Drying off swiftly, you got dressed in the usual smock and leggings. Most days, you didnât bother with the bandeau bra, finding it pointless. You wore it todayâyour laughable attempt at gearing up for war.
By the time you returned to the middle chamber where 049 waited when you needed privacy, something had changed. He paced along the floor in front of the observation window, his head bowed as if in thought, wrists held at the small of his back.
After giving him a worried glance that wasnât part of the act, you went to the lab counter where you kept your research journal. You had the idea of staying there as a vantage point, your back to the corner that divided the middle and inner chamber. You had a clear view of everything, including the outer containment doors, and the doctorâs bag was...
...missing.
Where was it? It wasnât on the counter or on the autopsy table. You were sure youâd spotted it just this morningâ
âDalliance!â
You looked up, blinking dumbly at the shouted word.
049 stopped pacing; he stood in front of the window, his shoulders stiff in an intimidating hunch. If you hadnât known this was the plan, youâd have believed it. He slipped back into form a little too easily for comfort.
âWe waste time on the Site Directorâs frivolity while the Pestilence continues to thrive amidst your very ranks!â 049 snarled at the darkened glass. âYou believe I had forgotten? That I could be preoccupied by a warm body? Your mockery is as offensive as it is pitiable.â
He leaned close to the glass, his voice dropping to a growl.
âI see you, wretch. Beg your Site Director for forgiveness. He will hold you accountable for this.â
049 turned away, strode to the autopsy table, and pulled out the bag from beneath his robes. Youâd forgotten he could do that, and your spine shot straight when he reached inside and pulled out a gleaming scalpel.
âCome here, assistant.â
He seethed the words, and for a moment, real fear curled around your neck. You obeyed, moving off the stool with stiff limbs, your heart racing at the appearance of the predator you hadnât glimpsed in weeks. He placed a hand on the space between your neck and shoulder, squeezing you. Not harshly at all.
His back was to the observation window, and they couldnât see his face. His eyes shone with urgency and clarity. Your good doctor was still in there, playing the role they expected of him.
âI regret it has come to this, my dear.â
The sharp edge of the scalpel shone within the corner of your vision.
âBut nothing can sway me from my duty. Not even you.â
He brought the blade up to your neck.
Dispensers hissed overhead. 049 whirled you around and pulled you close, an arm going around your chest as the scalpel remained pointed at your throat. Even as the lavender mist drifted over you both, he remained upright.
âOld tricks, Director. And not so effective with the aid of my assistantââ
049 went stiff, his limbs frozen, and you were close enough to hear the hum of the contact between the shock collar and his flesh.
He opened his shaking fingers and dropped the scalpel, giving up the instrument so as not to cut you with it as he convulsed. You gripped onto the arm holding you, helpless to do anything to stop his torment.
The containment doors slid open, no less than four guards storming inside with their rifles raised.
049 pushed you away and to the side, giving them a clear shot at him.
âNo!â you cried, forgetting you were supposed to play the role as 049âs shaken victim. But the guards didnât fire; 049 staggered to the autopsy table, and in his weakened attempt to grab onto the edge, sent his bag toppling to the floor.
Instruments, glass jars and beakers, and copper tubing spilled from its depths, creating a chaotic mess of shattered noise and aromatic liquids. Between that, and the shouting men, you ducked down beneath the autopsy table and hunched as if cowering in terror.
With the table blocking the view of the observation window, you scrambled for the lip of the bag now lying on its side. Taking a deep breath, you jammed your arm inside.
Give me what Valens wants me to have.
Something rested atop your palm, lightweight but with a familiar shape. You curled your fingers around it, small enough to fit inside your fist, and quickly pulled it out. Making as if to clutch your chest, you slipped the object down the front of your smock into the depths of your bra.
Peeking over the top of the table, you watched as 049 was dragged half-unconscious from the room. The doors closed and you stood the rest of the way, your fear genuine as you held a hand over your stomach, breathing hard.
You hardly had any time to think before the door opened, Kennethâs lanky form slipping through the door before it completely opened.
âHey, you okay?â His eyes were a little too wide, his face pale. âDid he cut you?â
You shook your head, leaning against the autopsy table for support in the haze of post-adrenaline jitters.
âIâm fine, justâ"
The door opened a second time, two men stepping through. One you didnât recognize, an older man in a lab coat and white hair. The second one, you knew very well.
He was fuming.
âWhat the hell did you do to set it off this time?â Leahy growled, stalking past you as he took in the disaster of the floor. Antiseptic fumes and other odd smells from the spilled liquids made your stomach turn.
You opened your mouth, but no response was forthcoming, caught between confusion and indignity.
âExcuse me?â you finally said.
The doctor began examining you, but you shied away from his touch. Not only had the staff members instilled a sense of aversion in you, but you didnât want him to find what youâd hidden.
âDid you say something?â Leahy pressed. âDo something?â
âYou tell me. You watch everything we do.â
Leahyâs glare turned from the broken beakers to you, his eyes dark behind the rim of his glasses. He moved forward with deliberate steps, and you backed away until you bumped into a warm barrier at your back. You didnât know who it was, and it forced you to remain in place as the Site Director towered over you.
âI know it was you.â
He gripped your jaw and turned your head upward, forcing you to meet his eye when you looked away.
âAnd Iâll scour every second of footage to prove it.â
Your chin trembled, but your voice held firm.
âI bet youâd enjoy that.â
His lips curled into a silent snarl, and you thought, this was it. Youâd reached the limits of what the Site Director would tolerate, and he would order one of the guards to shoot you.
Instead, he released you with a rough jerk of his hand.
âShe canât stay here. Put her in another room until this shitâs cleaned up.â
He walked past you and out the door without another word, the doctor following after him. That left Kenneth, the person youâd been trapped against when the Site Director had thrown his tantrum.
âSorry,â he mumbled, as if this was all somehow his fault. He rubbed the back of his neck, taking in the rest of the room. âHe is right, though. Thatâs a lot of glass, and, uh... whatever that green stuff is. I think itâs eating through the tile.â
You nodded, too tired to argue, especially when it would amount to nothing. Something reflective caught your eye; the scalpel 049 had mock-threatened you with was under the autopsy table just of reach. You entertained the idea of grabbing it and smuggling it with you, but hiding a surgical blade in your brassier wouldnât be one of your better ideas.
Leaving the scalpel was the right choice. As soon as you exited the chamber, two guards were at your flank, one of them patting you down and forcing your arms straight, palms open as he hooked you into shackles.
Kenneth, followed by the two guards, led you a few corridors over to a door that wasnât the high security mechanism of a containment chamber. It looked closer to a D-Class cell, and you realized thatâs exactly what it was, a temporary holding pen for one of the wayward cattle. The guards took off your shackles and ordered you inside. You followed their instructions in silence, glancing blankly at the single bed and toilet melded to the wall.
When you turned, you were surprised to find Kenneth lingering in the doorway.
âIs there anything I can get for you?â he asked. âNot that thereâs a whole lot ofâ"
âWhere did they take 049?â
His lips pressed together, and he unhappily glanced at the two guards, but they didnât seem to be paying any attention to the conversation.
âI donât know.â
âWhen will we be returned to his containment chamber?â
âI donât know that either.â He avoided your eye as he backed out the door, mumbling one last apology, âSorry.â
The door slid shut, leaving you alone in the small room. You couldnât remember the last time youâd been truly alone, and you sat on the edge of the thin mattress. Impatience nipped at your thoughts, but you forced yourself to wait until you were sure they wouldnât come back for you anytime soon.
Once a few minutes had passed, your anticipation got the better of you. You reached down your bra, grateful the guards hadnât thought to search your cleavage, and retrieved the object youâd smuggled out of the containment chamber.
A USB flash drive. It seemed ordinary on the outside, a matte grey color that didnât seem particularly special, but it had to be. You refused to believe 049 had risked his limited freedom for you to retrieve something that didnât matter. Heâd said this would help you escape, and it made sense now why heâd wanted you to be taken to an office.
It wouldnât do any good here. You slipped it back into your bandeau, hoping you would have an opportunity to use it soon.
It wasnât long before anxiety got the better of you. Pacing the small room, all you could think about was 049 and what they were doing to him. You tried not to imagine the worst-case scenario, but considering Leahyâs threats, there was an endless supply of them, each worse than the ones before.
You alternated between pacing and sitting hunched on the bed, tapping your foot with nervous energy. When was someone going to tell you what was going on? What had happened to 049? Would you ever get to return to the containment chamber?
As if in answer, the door slid open. You froze and eyed the entrance without breathing. No one stepped through.
You waited. And waited. The doorway remained empty, and the hallway beyond was unusually silent.
You slowly rose to your feet and approached the door. You edged past the threshold, expecting a guard to grab you by the scruff of your neck like an unruly kitten, but the corridor remained empty. There was no one here, but the keypad kept a steady green bar to indicate the door was unlocked.
For whatever reason the door had opened, this was your chance, and yet... your feet remained glued to the floor. Your breathing was shallow, confusion turning into fear. As terrible as your life had been the last few months, it had been structured. Controlled. Someone always telling you what to do, even if it would lead to pain and misery.
When you stepped outside the room, there was no guarantee of what you would find. You could be caught. You could be killed. It was enough to leave you frozen, fingers gripping the door frame.
The only thing that shook you free was the knowledge that you werenât doing this just for you. 049 had no one else. If you surrendered now, there was no hope of rescue for him. He would be at the mercy of Leahyâs punishment, a situation he found himself in only because he wanted to save you.
You didnât have a plan, but you had a destination. Get to a computer, insert the thumb drive, and the rest would follow.
Steeling yourself, you stepped outside the cell.

43 for Steban/Uli?
43. âAre you drunk?â
From the moment the door opens, Ulixes knows that today is going to be messy.
Steban's room is dark, illuminated only by the dim but warm glow of the desk lamp. That's nothing unusual, but today, Steban has unearthed one of his most prized possessions from under his bed: his old, cheap and banged-up tape player that doesn't see a lot of use, because the neighbors complain about having to hear revolution-era folk anthems on endless repeat. Tonight, though, there are no secular hymns about the working class striding united into battle for a brighter future. Tonight is a Slow Mesque Jams night, and Slow Mesque Jams nights are dire.
The songs are actually quite pretty, when one doesn't know what the words mean. When one goes through the trouble of translating them, a startling number of them revolve around lonesome, heartbroken boiadeiros riding into the pale to be consumed in there. When Steban puts those tapes on, he's in a very special mood.
Ulixes has seen enough of Steban's depressive episodes by now to rank them by severity. It should be a good sign that he's had the mental energy to put music on. But it also means that things might get... esoteric.
He takes a fortifying breath and enters the room.
The air smells like cigarettes. Steban is sprawled on his bed with his ashtray perched on his chest, smoking and staring into the middle distance.
Ulixes has seen enough of Steban's depressive episodes by now to know, also, that they usually just... happen, fluctuations in brain chemistry, inexorable and inevitable as the tide. Steban is always a base level of depressed, he has explained once, just sometimes it can be ignored and sometimes it cannot. There is a social factor, because how would the state of capitalism not exacerbate the condition, but much of it is random and out of Steban's conscious control.
Today, however, is different, because yesterday there was, earlier, a clear and obvious trigger. Because yesterday they went into that new church nightclub, having heard tell of a mysterious pale anomaly there, and Steban met that man that scurried on the ceiling like a crab, and they had a long and intense conversation that Ulixes couldn't understand because he never got the hang of Mesque, and then Steban went outside and cried so hard he threw up into the sand, and lastly sent Ulixes home, citing a need to be alone. This is the day after that.
Hesitantly, Ulixes clears his throat, announcing his presence. "Hello, Steban. Do you still need to be alone, or can I come inside?"
He's half afraid to be rebuffed, but Steban waves an inviting hand. "No, please, comrade, make yourself at home."
Ulixes steps inside and takes off his shoes and jacket, as per usual. "Are you doing any better?" he asks. "That man yesterday seemed to have hit you pretty hard." He looks around for a place to sit. The only available chair is piled high with laundry.
Instead of answering the question, Steban pats the mattress beside him. "Sit here with me."
Uli's treacherous heart speeds up as he does so. From here, he can feel Steban's body warmth. "So?" he prompts again. "What did you talk about with that man yesterday?"
"The world..." Steban lowers his eyes with a frustrated scoff. "The world is such garbage sometimes."
This is so uncharacteristic for Steban to say, it alarms Uli deeply. Without thinking, he blurts out, "This is unlike you."
Steban sighs. "You can't expect me to keep hope alive the entire time. Not when this world drives people to throw themselves willingly to entropy." He rakes a tired hand through his hair. "The crab man - that's what they call him over there - he's from my neighborhood, you know. Not this one, I mean, the one I grew up in. And it's... I thought it would be nice, meeting another one, but it just reminded me of why I moved here. Everyone of them's an entropolist or a petrofash these days, everyone's either in a gang or weirdly loud about not being in a gang, and... what is it about us as a people, Uli, that makes any and all of us this prone to despair?"
There's nothing culturally sensitive that Ulixes can possibly say to that. He doesn't usually get information like that from Steban. Now that he thinks about it, while his family seems great, Steban doesn't really talk about how he grew up, ever. "Steban, are you quite alright?"
Steban rubs at his eyes. "I sometimes wish I didn't have to exist here and now."
It makes alarm bells go off. "Okay, show me your hands."
"I haven't done anything," Steban says, a bit sullenly, but he proffers his hands anyway.
With the ease of practice, Ulixes inspects his arms. Nothing, not even a cigarette burn. But it's not time to be relieved yet. "Legs next."
"I'm not in the habit," Steban pouts but does pull the blanket off himself.
"I caught you before," Ulixes mutters, adjusts his glasses and kneels between Steban's splayed legs. How remarkable, he thinks. Before Steban entered his life, he'd never been close to anybody - not his family, not his peers at school. He drifted through the world in isolation, disconnected to it all, as if surrounded by a portable pale at all times. Steban encouraged him to research communism along with him, and made Ulixes discover that he could be part of something - and Steban also became a friend to care about and, on occasion, care for. Ulixes had never been in a position to help someone through a rough patch before Steban, and never even considered that he could be the kind of person who would know how to do that. But he has learned by now. He has routines now. How... strange.
"Come to think of it, this is a bit intimate," Steban says and chuckles as Ulixes squints near-sightedly down at him.
"What," Uli replies and hopes he isn't blushing. Another weird statement out of Steban, who has never before acknowledged that... thing between them, that thing-in-potentia, which Uli's always half convinced he's imagining...
He scrutinizes his friend's face. His eyes, beneath their doe-like lashes, do appear slightly filmy. And that faint scent... Ulixes sniffs. "Are you drunk?"
All of a sudden, Steban's expression grows shifty. "Nnnno. What gave you that idea?" He emits an unconvincing little laugh.
Ulixes sighs and reaches under the bed. He soon unearths a bottle of wine, the horrible cheap stuff they sell at the Frittte that turns your teeth red. He shakes it. It sounds about three quarters empty. Well, the stuff's not strong, but still...
"This is new," he says. Steban makes a slightly ill-coordinated grab for the bottle, and Ulixes leans back out of reach.
"It's just the once," Steban mutters.
Ulixes cocks his head, all kinds of concerned. He's probably overreacting, most people drink sometimes, but... "Don't you remember Mazov's remarks on the subject of drinking to excess?"
"Does this look like grain spirits to you?"
"Semantics, Steban." Uli doesn't want to sound preachy, or like he's arguing for argument's sake; he just doesn't really know any other way to be.
"Well, I guess I can't follow Mazov's teachings to perfection." Steban groans. "I can't do anything right. I couldn't even get through to the crab man."
Uli's not sure how to offer comfort here. He tries, "Maybe that one was just too far gone to recruit..."
"I'm not talking about making him a communist. Just to... just to convince him that there's anything at all worth living for." He sighs and presses the heels of his hands into his eyes. "I don't believe it myself, half the time. I'm not sure why you stick with me. I'm a fraud."
For a moment, Ulixes' mouth moves silently, helplessly, attempting to come up with an answer. While he's distracted, Steban plucks the bottle of wine out of his hand and takes a sip.
"Stop that. Enough." They grapple for it for a moment. A few drops of wine slosh out and fall onto the white sheets. Steban winces.
"Great. That's never coming out." He lets Ulixes take the bottle back and put it on the floor. This concluded, Ulixes shifts so that they're lying next to each other.
"I'm staying over tonight," he decides. "You need watching."
If Steban has any objections to Uli just inviting himself in like that, he doesn't voice them. What he does eventually say, in a low voice, is, "You're... too good to me."
"I'm here because I want to be here." Ulixes shakes his head and puts a hand on Steban's arm. "And you're not a fraud. It's hard sometimes, not to resign. Anyone would struggle."
"He... it was like he was trying to sell me on the pale. Having to be some kind of representative of the entire world... it's daunting. And I think I failed." Steban is growing tired. Ulixes can see he blinks slower now, and his voice is losing that over-enunciated diction of somebody pretending to be more sober than they are.
"You can try again. Maybe he just needs time." Thinking briefly, Uli adds, "And even if you lost him... it doesn't mean you always will. There will be other fights, ones I know you can win."
Steban hums, his eyes half-closed, and lets his head loll to one side. Sleepiness and alcohol blur his voice and thicken his speech when he replies, again, "You're so good to me."
Suddenly, he turns onto his side and shifts closer to Ulixes. Their bodies are almost touching now. He puts a hand on Uli's chest and says, "Ulixes, you know you're my best friend, right?"
Uli kind of figured. But it's nice to hear it said. "You're my best friend too, Steban."
Steban is somehow very close now. Most of his weight rests on Ulixes' torso. "Do you ever think...?" he murmurs, "Have you ever considered...?"
Uli's mouth is very dry. He licks his lips, inexplicably anxious. "Considered what?"
"I know one thing that makes the world worthwhile." He leans in even more, and Uli is still wondering why, when Steban tries to kiss him.
Their lips almost brush. Uli can almost feel it, that ghost of a touch. He feels Steban's warmth, his breath for just a split-second, before he grabs Steban's shoulders and holds him in place. "No."
Steban blinks at him: not crestfallen, not disappointed, just baffled. "Don't tell me you never wanted..."
And oh, he's put his finger right in the wound there, because of course Ulixes has wanted. But he has wanted it with both of them clear-eyed and clear of purpose, not with Steban having trouble enunciating and holding his head up by himself. (The temptation is there, to just take this anyway, if that's the only thing Steban will give him. But he can't. He cannot take advantage. It would lead to their friendship in ruins come morning, and besides is simply the wrong thing to do.)
"I... you... we can't, not like this."
Steban huffs. Ulixes smells the wine on his breath. "Not like what?"
"You know what I mean. You're not in your right mind."
"Nonsense." Steban whines and squirms in Uli's grip, deprived and frustrated and petulant about it. "Does anyone really still say... still use that old clichĂŠ?" He squints as if gazing through fog, and shakes his head like thinking is hard for him right now. "I'm perfectly... completely in possession of my... perfectly capable."
"I can't trust your word on that at the moment," Ulixes says and feels wretched. "I can't read your mind quite yet."
Again, Steban chances a foray, leaning forward and trying to nuzzle Ulixes' shoulder. "You have to know I love you," he slurs.
Ulixes isn't predisposed to crying. Hasn't done it in years - he's simply not quick to shed tears, for some reason or another. But right now he feels he might. Everything he has yearned for is tantalizingly close... and yet he must deny himself it. He's being told everything he wanted to hear... but he can't believe any of it. A part of him will, from this moment on, forever wonder and question and hope that Steban was telling the truth. Another part of him will resent the hope. His longing tormented him already; this is like pouring oil onto its banked fire. He will never know equilibrium again anymore.
"Stop it." His voice sounds choked and strange to his ears. "Please."
Steban makes a dismayed noise - but he stops, retreating to his side of the bed. Now, with half his face smushed into the pillow, he's just looking at Ulixes out of one mournful brown eye. "'M sorry..."
"No, no, it's okay. We can..." Cuddle. The word refuses to squeeze past his lips. It's what they will be doing, and have done before, in a comradely way, but that doesn't mean Ulixes can say it. "...stay close like this. But nothing... else, okay? Not... not tonight."
He doesn't dare say anything more. Steban is nowhere near memory loss levels of drunk, chances are he will remember all of this tomorrow. Which means Uli will have to play it safe. He can't admit to too much. In the morning, when Steban is sober, he might want to recant everything he said tonight, and it will tear Ulixes apart inside, but at least he will have kept his own cards close to his chest.
It's such a dreary business. Ulixes wants to be honest with his best friend, as he always is. But this... he can't. He simply can't. Too much depends on their staying together (he doesn't quite know what, exactly, depends on it, but he feels this viscerally). He can't rock this particular boat. Better to go on pining in silence than to ruin what they have with hasty confessions. Maybe if he tries very hard, he'll be able to forget tonight ever happened.
"Mmkay," Steban hums, oblivious to Uli's inner turmoil, and throws an arm over his chest, making full use of his permission to cuddle within the boundaries he's given. He falls asleep like that, squished against Ulixes' side, his arm a dead weight that Ulixes wouldn't dare shake off for the world.
Uli stays wide awake and stares at the ceiling for what seems to him like hours, his mind, against his better judgement, endlessly replaying the fleeting, ephemeral feeling of Steban's breath upon his lips.
In this moment, he's convinced that this is as close as he's ever going to get.

BATTLE OF FORUM GALLORUM, APRIL 14TH 43 BC
This battle was fought between the forces of Marcus Antonius and legions loyal to the Roman senate under the overall command of the consuls Vibius Pansa aided by his fellow consul Aulus Hirtius while Octavian remained behind at senate's camp.
After leaving a part of his forces under the command of his brother Lucius Antonius to hold Decimus Brutus in siege and engage Hirtius and Octavian with a feigned attack on their camp, Antony secretly marched off from his camp with the Second Gallica (Legio II Gallica) and Thirty-Fifth Legions (Legio XXXV) and his praetorian cohorts, and those of Marcus Junius Silanus along the Via Aemilia over the marshy ground to halt Pansaâs progress. Antonyâs ambush attack in a forest and marsh near Forum Gallorum was masterly. Antony himself led the center. But his move was discovered and the Martian legion led by Carsuleius and Servius Sulpicius Galba (one of Caesar's killers) and Octavianâs praetorian cohorts were dispatched to meet and reinforce Pansa, with the result that when Antony made his attack, he found himself fighting not only the newly recruited legions but also this legion of veteran soldiers who were thirsting for revenge upon him for the executions at Brundisium.
According to Appian, âthere was a suspicious agitation of the bushes, then a gleaming of shields and helmets, and Antony's praetorian cohort suddenly showed itself directly in their front. The other troops divided themselves in two parts and advanced into the marsh on either side, the one commanded by Pansa and the other by Decimus Carsuleius. While the praetorians of Octavius confronted the praetorians of Antony. Thus, there were two battles in two marshes, and neither division could see the other by reason of the elevated road, while along the road itself the praetorian cohorts fought another battle of their own. The Antonians were determined to punish the Martians for desertion as being traitors to themselves and allying with the senate. The Martians were equally determined to punish the Antonians for condoning the slaughter of their comrades at Brundisium. Recognizing in each other the flower of either army they hoped to decide the whole war by this single engagement. Being veterans, they raised no battle-cry, since they could not expect to terrify each other, nor in the engagement did they utter a sound, either as victors or vanquished. As there could be neither flanking nor charging in marshes and ditches, they stood together in close order, and since neither could dislodge the other, they locked together with their swords as in a wrestling match. No blow missed its mark. There were wounds and slaughter but no cries, only groans; and when one fell, he was instantly borne away, and another took his place. They needed neither admonition nor encouragement, since experience had made each one his own general. When they were overcome by fatigue, they drew apart from each other for a brief space to take breath, as in gymnastic games, and then rushed again to the encounter.â
In this fierce and bloody battle, Carsuleius had fallen mortally wounded and the Martians began to fall back while still repulsing Antonyâs cavalry assaults.
Finally, the Martian legion were routed with Antonyâs praetorian cohorts completely destroying Octavian praetorian cohorts to the last man. In the marshes to the left of the Via Aemilia, Pansa suffered a serious injury; his wound said to have come from an enemy javelin. This shook the morals of cohorts of the Martians. While the injured consul was transferred to Bononia, the Antonian veterans of Second Gallica put the cohorts to flight. When the new recruits of Pansa saw this, they fled in terror, disorder and with loud cries towards their camp. Antony fell upon these veterans and new recruits, making a great slaughter.
While Antonyâs troops celebrated, collected booty of victory and singing hymns of victory, Antony soon realized that Hirtiusâ fresh troops were approaching towards them from the north. Antony could waste no time on pursuing Pansa's broken army and began marching his disorderly troops back towards Mutina.
Antony hurriedly got his troops in line and bravely faced the enemy forces. Despite their tough resistance and instances of great valour, greater part of them were slain in this encounter, although Hirtius could not pursue them. As darkness was coming, he allowed them to escape in fear of being lured into a trap. A wide stretch of the marsh was filled with arms, corpses of men and horses, wounded men, and half-dead men. Some were unhurt but were overcome by fatigue. Antony and his cavalry, as many as he had with him, went to their assistance and collected them throughout the entire night. Some they put on horse-back in their own places, others they urged to take hold of the horses' tails and run along with them and so secure their safety. Antony then encamped without entrenchments in a village nearby, called Forum Gallorum (Castel Franco).
Thus, the long and bloody battle of Forum Gallorum came to an end.

God is greater than all our difficulties, and His infinite wisdom will lead us out of a path beyond our imagination.ââ
Behold, I am about to do a new thing; now I am about to discover it, donât you know it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert (Isaiah 43:19).
05/13 Bible verses
He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, Which yields its fruit in its season And its leaf does not wither; And in whatever he does, he prospers. (Psalm1: 3)
He will be like a tree planted by streams of water, which bears fruit in its season and its leaves will not wither; everything he does will prosper (Psalm 1:3).
05/13Good words of wisdom
1. The journey of life is like reading, your eyes should always look forward. If you can, don't always turn to the page of the past.
2. There is no need to tell everything when you know someone, just keep some words. Don't be harsh on those who are responsible, just leave some room for them. Tolerance is great, tolerance and concession are steps forward.
