HyeYoung Kim - Can a machine be conscious? A philosophical reflection

This talk is a philosophical exploration of the question of whether a machine can be conscious. It is divided into five sections, each reflecting on this question: self-consciousness, the body, the other (intersubjectivity), anthropomorphism, and the human-machine difference and relationship in existential and moral contexts. In doing so, I will briefly introduce Husserl’s concept of self-consciousness in relation to the ‘primal I’ (Ur-ich), which embodies two seemingly contradictory aspects: the unconscious and intersubjective dimensions of the subjective ego. These aspects can serve as central points for considering the possibility of machine consciousness. However, the question of whether a machine can be conscious does not end with a simple yes or no. What is more important is what this question means for us. I will address these reflections in the conclusion.

read fun book today called the hole about a guy that gets into a car crash that kills his wife and leaves him paralyzed and under the care of his mother-in-law that definitely hates him and neglects his needs and abuses him and is spending the entire time digging a massive pit in the backyard. and of course I knew from the beginning that he was going in the hole. especially when she looked directly at him while she was telling everyone that she was digging a pond but she wouldn't put any fish in there because they would just writhe and starve and die in pain and agony. Like I knew it was coming. But boy did he get into that hole in a fun and unexpected way
