The big screens seemed to multiply until you were surrounded by the flames that they were displaying. You turned away from the images that haunted you but there was nowhere else to look, the scene was unfolding all around you. Screams echoed in your ears and the people around tried to tell you they were yours, that he didn’t even have time to scream. It was quick, it was painless. 
You watched the fire lick the livery that you had loved, his driver number painted grey over the orange - 29 - his lucky number. The number faded with the flames, mottling and evaporating into smoke. You blinked through the burning in your eyes and the image blurred, the flames retreating from the metal like a film watched in reverse. But when the car was whole again it wasn’t 29 that sat centre down the carbon fibre body.
It was the number 4.
A fresh fear filled you as the scene replayed and unfolded once more but it was Lando taking the first corner after the safety car had pulled off the track and the green flag waved. It was Lando who spotted the stray marshals crossing the live track to jump through the fence. It was Lando who twisted his steering console sharply, missing the apex and spinning out before hitting the gravel side on, flipping him over and over. It was Lando who was upside down in the car that was torn to pieces, fuel and hydraulic fluids leaking everywhere. It was Lando in the car that exploded. 
You were screaming for him, your fists pounding on the screens as if you could break through them and reach him. You had to reach him.
“Y/N,” Lando called as he caught your thrashing arms and pinned them to the bed beside you. “Wake up, baby, it’s a dream, wake up.”
You kept trying to get to him but your arms were heavy and you sobbed as your strength failed. Slowly you sank to your knees on the hard concrete floor in the McLaren’s team garage and heard him calling your name. You hung your head as you clung to the voice in your headset, savouring the sound of your name on his lips before it was taken too.
“Y/N, wake up!”
The nightmare was ripped away in an instant and you found yourself pinned to the mattress before Lando eased his grip seeing your eyes open and alert in the predawn light.
“Oh thank god, you’re alive, you’re alright,” you gasped as you crushed your lips to his and your hands roamed his body, reassuring yourself he was fine. “I thought I lost you.”
“It’s me…” he choked as he pulled your hands away from him. “Lando.”
The heavy pause broke you as you saw the pained wince that flashed across his face.
“I know,“ you murmured as you reached for him only to rush from the bed as a wave of nausea crashed into you. You barely made it to the bathroom in time before heaving the bile from your empty stomach and a pair of warm hands came and kept your hair out of your face. 
“It was you, Lan,” you whispered as you sat back on the cold tiled floor and wrapped your arms around your knees. “I don’t think I can do this.”
“What?” his voice cracked as the squat he held broke and he fell on his butt too. “Us?”
You were torn from the lingering trauma of the nightmare to see his sad eyes shimmering with tears. “No, the race” you whispered softly, reaching for him and holding his hand like a lifeline. “I need you, I can’t survive it again.”
His arms encased you as the first sob broke the silence and he pulled you from the cold floor, carrying you back to the warmth of the bed. “Shhh, I’m here, love,” he murmured to your hair as he tucked the blankets back around you. It would have been a lie if he promised what you wished you could hear him say, that he would never leave you, that he would never crash. The sport was dangerous and though there were more regulations each year to protect the drivers, that was one promise he couldn’t make.
Sleep remained elusive so you watched the city wake under a glorious glow of orange from the comfort of Lando’s arms. He should have tried to sleep more since he would have a long day ahead but he could feel from the slight tremors that shook your hands that you needed him more than he needed sleep.
“Mum was terrified when I started karting, she made dad take me because she was scared of me racing around the track. Took her two? Maybe three years, before she finally came to one. But she got there, when she was ready.” His arms tightened around you as he nuzzled into your neck. “It’s okay that you’re not ready, baby, stay here today.”

Already the car park for the paddock was full and you knew it was a sign of what was to come. You had been quiet all morning, dreading having to leave the quiet calm of the hotel for the chaos that awaited at Silverstone, and Lando had tried to be encouraging but it did little to ease your mind.
You chose this, you reminded yourself. Yes, you weren’t ready, the nightmare last night testified to that fact, but Lando had been so supportive that you wanted to try for him. Never in a million years had you imagined that you would be back here, with a paddock pass hanging around your neck and the eyes of the world searching for a candid shot of the latest couple. It was like history was repeating itself.
“This might make it easier,” he said as he reached into his backpack and pulled out his pair of noise cancelling headphones. He carefully placed them over your head, leaving one slightly off so you could hear him as he unlocked his phone and passed it over. “You don’t have to talk to anyone if you don’t want to, just listen to whatever you want.”
You chose one of his private playlists on Spotify and set it to random as you sealed the headphone over your ear with a reserved nod. All sounds of the world around you faded away as the music began and you focused the lyrics to Rihanna’s We Found Love instead of the wild trains of thoughts running through your head.
Lando’s hand never left yours as you walked through the paddock for the first since René’s crash. You hadn’t been able to speak for fear your breakfast might make a reappearance again so you remained tight lipped as you kept your head down and clung to his arm.
“Hospitality or garage?” he asked when he reached the space where they split. 
One would mean being left in a sea of people who would constantly ask how you were but the other meant being in the garage and seeing him climb into his race car. “Can I wait in your room?”
He tucked you back under his arm with a nod and led you to the garage before taking the stairs to the private rooms above. There was a communal balcony that overlooked the pitlane and home straight but you kept your head down and dipped into the room with Lando’s name and driver number on the door. 
He hesitated as he closed the door behind him and rested his back to it as you sat heavily on the couch he usually napped on every free moment he could find. The headphones hung around your neck and you couldn’t keep your hands still as you fidgeted with his phone case, it was clear you were uncomfortable.
The sound of metal jingling caught your attention as Lando stepped closer and took a seat beside you. He took his phone back and slipped it in his pocket before placing the car keys to his McLaren, that he had picked up in Woking earlier in the week, into your palm. He closed your fingers around the keys before lifting your hand to his lips and kissing it softly. “In case it gets too much.”
Your heart hammered in your chest as you clenched your fist around the escape he had offered and your tired eyes stung as tears of relief built in them. “Thank you,” you whispered as your frail voice failed. 
 “I want you here, love.” Lando’s finger trailed up your neck, curling under your chin and guiding you to face him. “But I want you to want to be here too.”
You were certain he could hear your heartbeat from how hard it was thumping against your sternum before you climbed onto his lap and crushed your lips to his. You couldn’t put into words what you wanted to say, all you could do was show him as your lips parted and the kiss deepened to something more than just passion.
You nodded and rose to your feet so he could get up but he caught your waist before you could move out of his reach, pulling you flush to his body when he stood up. “I need to hear you say it,” he said as his eyes focused on your lips.
“I’ll call you, promise,” you mumbled to his chest that you buried your face in before gently nudging him to the door as his phone rang, his PT, Jon Malvern, calling him yet again to find out where he was. “Go, I’ll be fine.”
You could see he didn’t want to leave so you forced the most reassuring smile you could muster and pushed him to the door before returning to the couch. 
An hour later, you were still curled up on that couch when the door burst open. 
“It's cuffing season, and now we've got a reason to get a big boy, I need a big boy-” Max pulled up short of his singing as he found you alone. “Uh, where’s Bob?” 
You quirked an eyebrow at him and wondered if you should ask about the song but you were probably better off not knowing why he was singing it expecting Lando to hear. “Downstairs somewhere, warming up I assume.”
He frowned as he stepped away before stopping himself at the doorway and looking back. “Do you want to come for a walk?”
You started to decline the offer but the words failed to be voiced as you thought about how you had spent the last hour imagining every single thing that could go wrong and you knew it wasn’t healthy. So, surprising you both, you stood up with a nod. 
“Have you had lunch?” he asked as he waited for you to pull one of Lando’s hoodies on.
The thought of eating anything made you feel ill as you buried your hands inside the hoodie pocket and clutched your aching stomach. “I’m not hungry.”
“You should at least have a drink,” Max said, knowing you were lying as he grabbed two bottles of water from the minifridge in the room and tossed one to you. “Lando would freak if you passed out.”
You rolled your eyes but cracked the bottle open and took a sip under his watchful eye until he gave you a small approving smile.
The plastic bottle crinkled under the grip of your hands as your feet hit the bottom step. The garage still smelt the same as it did the last time you were in one. Oil, petrol and rubber permeated the stiflingly hot air and you swapped to breathing through your mouth as the scents triggered memories you didn’t want to relive.
The ghost of René’s hands touched your waist, the phantom brush of his lips caressed your nape. He would always sneak up on you in the garage while the sights and sounds distracted you and your body tensed at the thought that it was never going to happen again.
“Hey, Y/N,” Max called back from where he stopped after realising you had frozen at the entrance. “I found Bob.”
You followed his hand to see him pointing at the still mostly-dismantled race car, a familiar figure curled up in the driver’s seat having a nap. The team worked quietly around him as if it was a common occurrence but you had always spent your time in the garage next door, Piastri’s garage now, and never seen it.
You felt guilty thinking he needed the sleep because you had woken him up early with the nightmare, and then you had taken his couch which would have been far more comfortable than his car seat. You were so busy internally chiding yourself at the selfishness that you didn’t even realise he had woken until he smiled.
“You’re here.” The hope in his voice pulled you from the one in your head and you smiled back.
It had been easy, too easy, you thought. You had faced your fear and it hadn’t broken you. You had seen him in his car and it wasn’t fear that gripped you when he smiled proudly at you.
The phantom hands on your waist disappeared as a warm breeze blew through the garage, brushing away the kiss on your nape with it. René’s presence still lingered but it no longer touched you, like he was releasing you, freeing you from the memory. It felt like he was letting you go so you could be there for Lando and your thumb twisted the wedding band still resting on your finger as you said a silent thank you to the breeze.
“I’m here.”

Warning[s]: Nothing. This is pure fluff, and takes place in the teen titans version of Robin. It is Dick Grayson. This is proof read.

“Ethylene glycol is a synthetic liquid substance that absorbs water. It is odorless, but has a sweet taste. Ethylene glycol is used to make antifreeze and de-icing solutions for cars, airplanes, and boats. It is also used in hydraulic brake fluids and inks used in stamp pads, ballpoint pens, and print shops. In shampoo it adds thickness to the product formula and improves the texture of the product as well. It is generally used in surfactant-based systems which help to stabilize the formula.”
The Titan’s tower wasn’t always this quiet at night. Usually, anyone inside would be able to hear Beast Boy and Cyborg in the kitchen, goofing off. Or sometimes you could hear Raven warding off demons or cursing someone- whatever it is she does. Starfire didn’t make a whole lot of noise, though there were a few occasions you swore you could’ve heard her practice singing or a stand up comedy routine. So Robin was the only one who actually went to sleep on time it seemed. 
But tonight, as stated above, there was nothing. Beast Boy and Cyborg had gone off to their own rooms to play video games. Starfire wasn’t doing anything, and Raven must’ve been reading because there were no sounds of intergalactic demon fighting coming from her area. Robin had probably just gone to sleep, as per usual. 
You were just a friend of the Titan’s. Maybe a couple times a month you slept over, your record being a whole four days straight. It was nice. Titan Tower was way better than your place. So big and extravagant, with a view of everyone and everything. And their couch? Ridiculously lush. The whole place was just better. 
Well, on this particularly quiet night, you were the only one in the living room. Your ass was deep in the ridiculously lush couch, and cartoon network’s making the television flash with every color known to man. Outside, it’s dark but for the hundreds of little white lights from the buildings in the city. It is all calm. 
You crane your head over to look at the view, your brain drowning out the sounds from the screen ahead. There’s dark, midnight waves overlapping each other back and forth, the glimmering reflection of the moon illuminating mermaids in the distance. It looks like there’s a few surfers on the beach, breaking the law for a photoshoot or some cheap tricks to show their friends. It pulls your lips into a frown, but you’re not sad. You’re just calm. The entirety of your body feels... feels as quiet as the rest of the night does. 
When your jaw turns your head to look at the clock above the doorway, you frown just a bit more. 
2:15am. 
Why aren’t you asleep? Starfire’s got an extra bed ready for you whenever you’re ready. She’s been waiting for hours at this point. But you’re not all that tired. Though, to be fair, you also have no real desire to be awake. You’re just in the middle. Maybe you’re depressed. 
After a minute and a half of pondering, movement comes from your left side. There’s a muffled shuffling of footsteps, and you turn your head once more. 
“Hey Robin,” you greet. Then you frown. “What’s... with you?”
The boy rubs his masked face with his palm. “What’re you still doing up?” he counters tiredly. 
“TV,” you motion to the screen. “Why are you still in uniform?” Your eyes squint as you observe him. “Your hair is all- do you use gel?”
He sucks in a breath, still rubbing his temples. “My hair is the most important part of my identity, Y/N.”
“Is... the being alive not enough for you?”
Robin lifts his head finally. His expression is annoyed, somewhat, though you know it’s not with you. He just loves the stress. “Why haven’t you gone to bed?”
Your eyes flit between him and the television. Then, motioning to it again, you say, “TV.”
“What’s the point of those dumb shows this late anyway?” Robin crosses his arms. “Aren’t those for kids?”
“We’re the same age and we watched it together this morning.”
Well, Robin stomps himself into the kitchen, disappearing from your sight. After a few seconds, you raise yourself from the sofa and follow after him. He must’ve been wearing cologne throughout the day, because you can smell the trail of his musky scent as you walk through the doorway. 
The boy has his back turned to you at the counter on the other side of the room. The way his hand and shoulder blades are moving makes you think he’s cutting or chopping something. Probably an apple. You’ve seen him cut them up before bed before. You’ve watched him carry them in a little paper bowl and carry it off to his room, eyes rung with tired circles as he waves a quiet departure. 
“If you eat before you get in bed, it’ll probably make it harder to sleep,” you tell him. 
“Maybe you should have some then since you want to stay up so badly,” you hear him mutter snippily. 
You’re taken back for a split second at this. You’re quick to recover though, watching the knots in his back move with his shoulders, even through his cape. “Is there a reason you want me to go to sleep so bad?”
“I have stuff to do.”
“Like what stuff?”
“Stuff!” he snaps. It takes a big chunk of energy to not snicker at his voice crack. 
“I can help you with stuff,” you say. 
But this must’ve been the wrong thing to say. Robin’s movements suddenly snap. There’s a sharp, clinking noise. A hiss and a gasp, and you’ve already sprung into action. 
“I cut my finger,” he says aloud, turning slightly to face you. He’s holding it in his other hand, his cheeks aflame with either frustration or embarrassment. 
You’re on him in a flash, prying the finger from his other hand and observing. It’s not horrible, though it is fairly bad for just a little nick. There’s thin ribbons of red running from it already. Not enough to hit the floor or make a big mess, however, which you take as a good sign. Just a clean, scarlet gash on the pad of his index. 
Keeping your eyes on it, you move a few feet until you reach the cabinet with the Band-Aids in it. When you pull out the box full of limited edition Teen Titans bandages, you frown as you search. “Which titan do you want?”
“Anyone would be fine!” Robin screeches. 
Cyborg again, he thinks sadly to himself as you wrap it on him. 
Once you’re done, you look up at Robin. “There,” you chirp, like an accomplished pet. “I have lotion you can use on it in the morning.”
“I have my own lotion,” Robin deadpans. 
“Okay,” you say back. 
Then it’s quiet. 
And it’s super weird. 
“Robin?”
“Yes, Y/N?” he drawls, then immediate regrets when he catches the hint of sadness in your usually blank and unreadable eyes. 
“Why do you want me to go to bed so badly?”
Robin takes a second to respond, looking at you. His face his softening up, tiredness fading away with his heartbeat. “I had to get something from the living room,” he admits. 
“You could’ve gotten it,” you tell him. “I wouldn’t kill you over it.”
“Yeah but it’s... embarrassing.”
You’re not one to cross boundaries. Robin’s always appreciated that. So instead, you say, “Okay.”
But Robin still has a lump in his throat. So, after another second, he explains, “It’s hair conditioner. I got a new one.”
“Okay.”
And in that moment, Robin thinks you’re the best. 
“Sorry for being so snippy about it,” his eyes glancing away with sudden shyness. 
“That’s alright,” you tell him. “Enjoy your apple,” you wish. 
And, Robin the idiot responds, “Thanks, you too.”

You’re on the couch again, ass digging itself deeper into the lush comfort, when Robin returns to you maybe ten minutes later. 
You look over again, but there’s a different sight to be seen. 
The young man is still in uniform, though drenched in his head area. His hair is all soggy and wet, and the Band-Aid on his finger has been made damp and squishy looking. There’s water all over the floor in a matter of seconds, dripping and dropping beside his clenching and unclenching hands. 
“Hey Robin,” you look him up and down. “...What’s up?”
“I uh,” he pauses, looking at you and then away repeatedly. “I need ,um... some help.”
“Is your room like... flooded or something?”
“What?” he raises a confused brow. “No- I... I... it-” he pinches the bridge of his nose between his fingers. His cheeks are turning pink again, but you’ve always loved that so you don’t mind. “It has to do with my hair.”
“Yes?”
He removes his hand from his face, and stands straight and stiff. His eyes shut and he rushes to say the words. “Canyouhelpmewashmyhairout?”
“Hm?”
Robin sucks in a breath. The flustered Dick Grayson almost falling to his knees at this point. “Can you uh... help me -uh... wash my hair out?”
You blink once. “You can’t ask Starfire to help you?”
“She’s asleep,” Robin explains. 
“Oh, did you go into her room?”
“No,” he deadpans. 
Then the two of you look at each other for a while again. 
“What about the guys?” you continue after a full minute of stillness. 
“Are you kidding?” Robin nearly yelps. “I’d be laughing stock of the team with those two.”
You wanted to tell him he was already laughing stock to the rest of the titans, but you wouldn’t do that to Robin. Despite your social aloofness, Robin is someone you could never take pleasure in seeing embarrassed. 
“Sure, then,” you agree. The TV switches off with the press of your button, and Robin’s eyes widen in disbelief as you actually begin to stand. “Just the...” your hand motions to the top of him, “hair?”
“Yes,” Robin says with a snip, voice cracking slightly. “Just the hair. Thank you.” And he stomps past you apparently leading the way to his room. You follow him like a lost puppy. 
Dick’s room is clean enough for a teenage boy. There’s a few piles of clothes around the hamper. Most of the fabric looks like copies of his Robin suit, but under, if you squint, you can see the promise of normal, every day t-shirts. Enough to make you wonder if Robin is a real boy. But besides that, most everything in the room is in place. The floor is relatively clear, and even his bed is made. Not sure where he picked that up. 
You’re looking around, trying to memorize every little detail of the boy wonders room and he’s still moping about in front of you with soggy hair. He stands in the bathroom for a moment. You hear shuffling. Then he walks past you with a towel and mutters, “Bath is in the hall.”
And, even though you know where the bath is, you’re just happy to walk back through his room at a different angle. It’s so exuberating, in fact, that when the door hisses shut behind you you’re left with a little tingle in your toes. 
You saw his room.

So there you were in the bathroom.
Dick’s leaning over the bathtub backwards, only his hair in the water. Mask on, costume on, everything dry and perfect except the area you’re tasked with washing through.
You seem to be doing alright. At first, Robin had a little frown and scowl on his face, like maybe he distrusted you not to get soap and water in his eyes. But now his eyes are closed, and his frown isn’t deep at all. He looks relaxed.
Your fingers are gentle. They run through his raven locks, sprinkling water droplets over them, guiding the ends into the water filling the tub. You see what Robin meant by needing help now. He puts gel in his hair. Every. Single. Morning. It collects on his scalp and ends in every individual hair strand and becomes difficult to scrub away, but you have to or else it’ll just get worse. But telling him to stop using it is really not an option.
As requested, you’ll use Robin’s new shampoo and conditioner- the two things he had attempted to retrieve from the living room earlier.
But until then, you watch Dick’s lips part slightly while you massage his scalp with wet finger tips.
“Ah…” he mumbles. “Ah… ah… ah-h-h.”
Your Robin really likes head rubs.
His eyes snap open as if he was pulling himself back to reality. “Could you use the shampoo now?”
“Hm?” you pretend to not hear him. The pads of your fingers then dig slightly deeper into his scalp and perfectly satisfy an itch in the area. Robin’s eyes close again in response.
“Can you use the shampoo?” he repeats, much softer.
“Yes.”
You reach over with one hand, keeping the other on his hairline. You’re trying to move quick. You can only imagine how much discomfort his spine is in now, practically doing a back bridge over the side of the tub. But perhaps the sensations throughout his scalp are making up for it.
You open the fresh, lime green bottle. It’s tall and skinny with a dancing, smiling lemon on the front. A nickel sized amount falls into the pit of your palm, which you then bring over to bath.
You spread it back through Robin’s hair from the base to the tips, wiggling your fingers in zig-zag motions to rub it in. He stays quiet.
The shampoo runs how it’s supposed to. It soaks into his hair and collects on the scalp, which you then scrub in.
“What’s in this shampoo?” Robin speaks, his features still relaxed to the point of no return.
You pick up the bottle again. “Ammonium chloride, lauryl-”
“Sulfate or ammonium?”
“Doesn’t say. Sorry. Ethylene glycol and some water.”
Robin makes a face. “Ethylene glycol? That’s a chemical.”
“Yes. It’s used in a lot of things. Not smelly and sweet. They’re all chemicals.”
You continue the rubbing against Robin’s head. “Lean back for me?”
He obeys, arching his back deeper so you can gently nudge his head into the water until it’s up to his hairline. He seems to trust you easily enough with this.
“That doesn’t look comfortable,” you observe about his posture and position.
“It’s ok.”
The shampoo suds away into the bath water. Hints of hair gel join the shampoo in the bath, which is clouding over with swirly mint and white streaks.
You’re more than happy to do this. Robin is your friend. They’re all your friends. But he is Robin. He makes your toes curl and the tips of your ears feel hot. Whatever that means.
“Conditioner.”
“Mmm…”
You pull the next bottle out of the bag. It’s the same color and company as the shampoo, which is expected of this Robin’s experimenting. “What if this ruins your hair?”
“Why would you- ooh.”
The conditioner accompanies your fingers, back and forth on his hair. Coating, using way more than the recommended amount in an attempt to undo the dryness of his previous hair products.
It’s best to be quiet. Both of you see he is enjoying this. Why vocalize it and ruin the moment?
You rub and rub. Then your fingers slow. “I’m tired.”
“Mm…” Robin hums in return, lulled into a sleepy security and not processing a word. “Okay…”
“You have to let the conditioner sit a bit. Then wash it out with cold water.”
Robin’s eyes open again, searching for yours. From his view, you’re upside down. “You’re going?”
“Yes. I can stay?”
“No, that’s okay.” The water sloshes with Robin’s movements. Sudden movements only triggered after your physical presence left him.
“Oh,” you say, because your toes have been curling and ears have been feeling hot at the tips for a while now. It was nice to be this close to Robin. “Okay.”
Both of you are still for a second longer. You’re waiting, feeling like he’s going to say something. Robin does not. He watches you stand, go, and the door close. After a minute the door opens again, but only for a familiar arm to drop a clean white towel on the floor and then disappear once more.
It was all very thoughtful of you.
Then Robin sighs and slumps his head further back into the water. It creates a snapping splash throughout the surface. You were far more soft than he is with his own body.
Robin raises his index finger up above his head, his back and neck still arched over the tub. The boy examines the Band-Aid you had placed over his finger tip. Then he lets the hand fall back to the ground uncomfortably.
You were far softer with his body indeed.

The battle had long ended before the mechanical mercenary came to. He groaned and mentally flicked through the various alarms that blared in his head. He had been leaking hydraulic fluid and diagnostics looked terrible, but luckily no critical systems were damaged. The only biological complaint was the whiplash he sustained between the time the enemy demoman charged into him and when he collided with the wall.
Clicking on the vision his helmet afforded him, Wesley only found darkness. Great. His screen was much too broken for him to see through the camera. Essentially blind, he found he could not even lift his remaining arm to remove his helmet. Moving parts in his shoulder only clanked uselessly against something foreign that had been jammed through it.
Anxiety rose in his chest when he found that he could not even bend forward. His back was planted firmly against the wall, pinned to it by whatever object was preventing him from moving his shoulder. He was stuck, blind, and beginning to panic.

The waiting is the worst part.
Paul is not a patient man, not really. His colleagues are often far worse and, by and large, insufferable when it comes to their sense of importance in creating new life, but if he only wants to stand out among a crowd of swaggering narcissists then he hardly needs to be here.
Synthetic breeding requires a keen mind, this is something he is willing to admit. It isn't something anyone off the street can be hired on to do; it takes more than memorization of timing and doses and formulae, more than the knowledge of code. It takes daring and impulsiveness to create something that will live the long and healthy life it deserves.
It does not, however, take patience. Patience is a lauded virtue, so the folks in this field play at it, and poorly. Many a Sculptor will float from function to function, from lab to lab, across the rooms and down the halls, all while forcefully projecting an air of manufactured tranquility and above-it-all zen.
Paul has no time for that horseshit. He’s a man with work to be done.
In truth, Paul doesn't think Sculpting takes any sense of artistry either. His Synths are plain creatures, and he isn't given over to the ridiculous notion of 'symbolism' behind the markings the law insists are required. Take a Synth's blood, any idiot can find the genetic markers that prove them nonhuman. Even the drive to make a Synth's eyes different from a standard human's is unnecessary, forcible visual segregation.
All a man needs to be any good at this job, Paul believes, is timeliness, and awareness of patterns, and a decent drive. This is true intellect, in his opinion. Biology and gene sculpting are all skills and knowledge pools anyone can bathe themselves in. The innate needs, the ability to manage time well, pay attention to the patterns, and be willing to put in the work, were entirely different, and couldn’t be taught.
Most Synthetics, in Paul's opinion, could be better Sculptors than any hume, including himself.
The project's end takes the biggest toll on Paul's nonexistent patience. There are ways to speed up a growth cycle, though doing that at too high a concentration is provably detrimental to the Synthetic overall. Of course, everyone does it to some extent; they can't very well sit around waiting for twenty-odd years for the fetus to develop.
There are ways to speed through the rest of this too, as well as all that comes after, but again -- the more one races through anything, the sloppier the end result. Paul tries not to do it much, though honestly he is often working with such large batches of Synthetics for his sponsors that his personal Imprinting is negligible. They are imprinted to their Companies or their branch of Service, and once free of the tank, they need little and less from him.
Tonight, he will Midwife his first vanity project.
Shi is a marvel. His tank-initiated Imprinting has been in and of itself a point of pride: a net of fine, flexible mesh rather than the standard shackles. Shi will be the artist Paul never was. Shi will have all his cleverness, all his drive, all his passion -- and none of the pain, none of the paranoia that jitters and scurries through his mind (the product of a faulty Organic brain and years of trauma in the Downs).
The Tank is another marvel. His own design, largely automated in processes that have never had or needed a tender human touch. Shi's Tank has already initiated the birthing process, and Paul, alone in his lab, is impatient.
He paces, he smokes. He has a dwindling supply of tobacco, but tonight he's powering through a bitter Safe Cig as he prowls the lab floor, moving between the tank, the feedback screens, and the console with the controls he needs. There is no false sense of stately calm about him. His colleagues laugh and blame his hot Texan blood. Behind their hands, they whisper their little jokes about their pet Anti-Buddha -- their little Chinese man who always forgets to do his daily meditations.
They're nothing, in the end. Humans are on the last leg of their flawed and rapacious rule of this world. He has a reason to be impatient.
The world is moving on, and he intends to build a better man to walk it in the aftermath of his own sad people.
The hydraulic hiss of the vacuum chambers pulls him from his own hectoring, harried thoughts, snapping his attention to Shi's Tank. The Salve, his own special brew of the stuff, once only as viscous as soapy dish water and now thicker than gravy, nearly gelatinous, exits smoothly; the Tank works perfectly along his design.
In five quick steps, he crosses the room. Most Synths try to breathe before they try to see, but Shi’s eyes are already open. Paul smiles; this is a deviance he approves of.
Impulsive, he opens the slide-front of the tank, and allows the last third of the spent Salve to flood the floor, rushing over his shoes, wetting the hems of his trousers. Shi sags against the cords feeding into his spinal column, then gasps his first ragged breath of natural, unfiltered air as the Tank retracts the needles from his back. The wounds will heal before Paul even gets him to the exam room; freshly born Synths always heal faster than anything.
When Shi staggers forward, Paul catches him. In a stunning display of functionality -- personality too, Paul would dare say, Shi catches his own weight and leans less than half of that weight on Paul, who is a good head and a half shorter than him.
"Can you walk?" Paul asks softly, speaking the language of childhood and holidays, and grins broadly when Shi answers in the same tongue.
"If I may have a moment to breathe," Shi replies in flawless Mandarin, looking around the lab. "I'm experiencing a bit of disorientation."
This is common enough not to be worth worrying about. One can hardly be faulted for being disoriented at their birthing.
"Do you know who you are?"
Shi turns his head, and Paul, for the first time in over a decade of Sculpting and Midwifing, is momentarily awed by his own work. Shi is no more beautiful than any of his other bare bones designs -- he's not an Artist, not in the way his colleagues obsess over being -- but Shi is fundamentally present in a way that Paul has never seen in a new-born Synthetic.
"My name is Shi," he says, head cocking just slightly to the right. "A name with many meanings. In this case, 'Honest'."
Fluid speech. Verbose, even. Everything according to Paul's Imprinting, but in action so much more wonderful than he could ever have imagined.
After a moment, Shi straightens up, lean and powerful. His eyes glint in the low light, pupils wide enough for the effect of the manufactured tapetum lucidum to be noticeable. He's striking, Paul thinks, and that's not pride alone talking.
"And who am I, Shi?" Paul asks, lowering the arm he'd been using to brace Shi.
"You are Pa Carlton," Shi says, and then frowns. It's a frown Paul has seen through the glass and the Salve many times; the frown of Shi processing something. "Pa-ll," he tries again, brows knitting together. "Pa-uhl. Pa-uhl Cartlon."
And Paul, who has never seen himself as a father, and never intended to be anything more personal than a teacher or a fleeting, momentary guide in this creature's long life, finds himself reaching out to take Shi's hand in his own, pressing it between both of his as he smiles. He hopes the tears he feels gathering aren't as noticeable as they feel.
"Pa is fine," he says quietly. "Pa works just as well. Now let's get you to the examination table."
