MISC ART DUMP 3
I tripped over and remembered I actually have a bunch of drawings saved up for larger posts that never came to fruition so have them while they’re within my brain attention span (alot of this shit dates back to 2021 or even 2020 so thats why its so uggo)
from top to bottom, left to right:
Belarus (chillin)
Iran, Afghanistan (Two greatly contrasting viewpoints)
Yemen, bby Oman (Oman got his ass beat by one of Saudi Arabia’s bros and Yemen got conscripted rip)
Somalia, Djibouti, Ethiopia (this is so ancient please don’t look at it)
Tarquinia/Etruria (No idea how accurate the colors are, but I do remember basing the jewelry after actual artifiacts)
Central African Republic/Centrafique (Centrafrique was meant to be a man originally, and this was one of the first drawings I did to try and redesign her!)
Tanzania, Burundi, Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya, South Sudan (Jfc south sudan is yuge)
Malawi (Still not 100% happy with her design, but I still like this!)
Rwanda, Burundi (A Rwandan tourism twitter account liked this)
India, Afghanistan (Fatality)

Poor Folk Hear Him Gladly (Malawi/Scotland Christmas song)
Here's a Christmas song with a fun melody, hard-hitting lyrics, and ties to Malawi and Scotland. I've musicked with it for many years, and it's always a crowd pleaser.
The song is inspired by a traditional Tumbuka hymn by Jessie Nyagondwe, Malawi. The English lyrics were published by Tom Colvin in 1976. He served as a missionary in Nyasaland (now Malawi) from 1954 to 1958, in Ghana from 1958 to 1964, and again in Nyasaland from 1964 to 1974. He published 3 collections of African hymns in partnership with multiple African composers. https://hymnary.org/text/in_bethlehem_of_judah
Rev. John Bell of the Iona Community (Scotland) took the song and emphasized a lilting rhythm, creating a cross-cultural fusion arrangement with a strong Celtic feel. He also arranged the non-solo singers to hum like a (bagpipe) drone in the verses.
This arrangement is sung here by The Cathedral Singers (UK) on the terrific 2001 album of Christmas songs led by John Bell, "God Comes Tomorrow." https://www.giamusic.com/store/resource/god-comes-tomorrow-recording-cd494

In Bethlehem of Judah, Among the very poorest, A child was born of Mary, Of all God's gifts the richest. Refrain: Poor folk hear Him gladly, yours will be the Kingdom. Rich folk share Your fortunes, Jesu bids you welcome. The workers from the fields came To greet the King of heaven; The clever, rich and mighty Knew nothing of His birth then. Refrain He came to bring a new way Of living with each other By sharing and by loving And serving one another. Refrain The hungry, poor or sinful, Or those whose lives are broken Can find in Him their freedom And glory as God's children. Refrain So welcome to the morning Of blessed Jesu's birthday. Let's give ourselves to Jesu And live forever His way. Refrain Words © 1976 Hope Publishing Company, 380 S Main Pl, Carol Stream, IL 60188

My multicultural worship ensemble adds an Irish bodhran drum to the vocals, emphasizing a Celtic rhythm. I don't think anyone today knows the accompaniment to the original song in Malawi. Tom Colvin died in 2000 and apparently did not leave behind his field recordings from Africa.

Someone wrote a nice flute part for the song, you'll find it in this score of the song sold at https://www.giamusic.com/store/resource/two-african-christmas-carols-print-g5487 (you can preview the score to see the flute part, it's the second song in this score)
