curious on your thoughts on HWHBH looking back?

stuff like characters/interactions/events you wish you wrote differently, stuff you’re proud of, just various opinions you haven’t elaborated on before? (this is just an excuse to hear you ramble)

I will give this a more proper response when i am home from work. But we'll what better time to shoot from the hip about a project of 3 years than when I'm delirious and huddled in a cold back storeroom.

HWHBH started as a fun cute way to write dumb head empty fluff of a character I liked being coddled and protected. It's early chapters are clumsy, rushed, and riddled with an egregious amount of OOC characterization. I was roughly 15/16 years when the fic started and it shows. As my understanding of the DSMP as a work of narrative fiction evolved, as did the nuances of HWHBH, and this can be seen I feel as the fic goes along. I grew more confident in exploring some of the uglier, grosser, weirder parts of trauma and recovery just as much as I grew comfortable in portraying cBench in a QPR poly relationship.

I also put a lot of myself into XD. For better. Mostly for the worst, I've gotta admit. I think I'm the least proud with how I wrote them. They're a bundle of 5+ contradictions and half assed ideas walking around in the shape of a humanoid dilf with 2 double decker ds. Angry and hateful and aloof and destructive and topically coddling, yet so soft and tender and suffocatingly nurturing.

I simply don't think I was skilled enough as a writer at the time to do them well. It saddens me. But it's a lesson learned.

If nothing else, I can thank HWHBH as a way to Not explore certain flaws. It's a lesson in tact and restraint when exploring ugliness and cruelty

But. I am proud of it. It's a thing I made and loved and labored over. Impossible Not to feel fond. Really.

lisa you're so based Im not gonna think about it too much before bed because I'm sleepy n peaceful and having a good time after enjoying time with moots but God whenever CCs go out of their ways to make content out of mocking fics when they can easily just ignore it or politely ask to not have certain stuff made, it makes me so so anxious about HWHBH or my other fics being treated that way and oughhh ahghhh evil angry ugly emotions. I think creators should just laugh at shit in private like the rest of us...hot take...maybe a bit scalding but idk

Yeah, as I said in my post, this very well could’ve been me with what I have written while I was in this fandom. And it’s not a nice thought at all.

Yeah! part of the reason he's lost that friendliness in hwhbh(aside from being mind crushed by God) is because at this point he's come to realize there's no benefit to it. He's powerless. he won't ADMIT that he's powerless, but a lot of the kindness and playfulness he displayed prior to imprisonment was a direct result of him being in complete control of the situation. He could afford to be friendly towards Tommy(and Tubbo, but to a much lesser extent) when he had control over Tommy and had the entire server under his thumb, but now, in his tiny box, he's just lashing out for any scrap of control in an objectively hopeless situation.

like this man legit thinks that Tommy is the one who sent XD in(boyo was eepin' the whole time they were in the prison) :" he's like "OF COURSE TOMMY SENT GOD TO TORTURE ME. THAT'S HOW PAYBACK WORKS. LIKE I GET IT. IT'D DO THE SAME but like in person y'know Sam? coz i'm a god. fuck you btw."

hi metaru i have work in like an hour but before i have to go I just think it's funny how you mentioned that your version of cDream is nicer than canon, when in my fics I always work to make him even Worse by leaning into the "sick fuck who takes joy in torturing a child" aspect of his character. Like in hwhbh, he's just a Grosser person. He's written as a smug, petty, vindicative manbaby who, as soon as he's robbed of his armor and weapons and put in that cell, all the Classy Mysterious Elegance he held himself with just Drops. He's ofc a guy in a hostile oppressive environment that's fucking with his already shit poor mental health, and once XD goes in and throws his brain into the God Blender Torture Matrix Palinko, he's literally a husk of who he was and can barely make sense of where he is half the time. But there's still the constant undercurrent of Tommy Tommy Tommy in his thoughts. he's a cDream's who fear-fueled hatred of the boy is what he wears on his sleeve, because when robbed of his capacity to cause harm, all that's left is a sad, pitiful little man who felt like his world was being threatened by a literally child and resorted to torture and barbaric cruelty about it.

I mean like to be fair once you get a literal god torturing you I think niceness goes out the window. And like fair for him what XD is doing is like. Not Okay? Don’t torture people. (And this isn’t a criticism of your work, I think it’s some really good characterisation of XD. We know he’s ruthless and cruel to people he dislikes, so it’d make sense for him to be so towards someone who hurt someone he deeply cares for).

The way I write c!Dream is that he's like, fully and completely genuine about his desires for a big happy family and friendship, because I think that’s an excellent thing to explore in my horror work. So he's entirely genuine when he’s being kind to c!Tommy. He is being manipulative intentionally, yes, but when he says he cares about c!Tommy and enjoys spending time with him it’s the whole truth. He'd happily spend all day playing games and chatting with c!Tommy as much as he'd happily torture and experiment on him because he genuinely sees c!Tommy as a brother. He adores him in the same way c!Wilbur does, the same way c!Tubbo does, yet it’s horribly twisted. The kindness is fully genuine, and so is the cruelty. I think c!Dream is a lot worse if he's incredibly kind… and still a gleeful torturer who views that torture as kindness. He’s painfully human and he thinks he’s a good person. He has so many virtues yet used in ways worse than any vice. He's the dark side to every light.

if You want my thoughts on c!Niki, in the Nicest and Kindest and Fairest way that I can manage(pushing aside all the Anger and the Bitterness, both related to the DSMP canon story and specific situations IRL): I think she really needed to be told off for trying to kill c!Tommy. I don't mean that in a cInniter way. I mean that fundamentally, the biggest issue with her writing was that she tried to kill an abuse victim and treated him as the source of all her trauma, got over hating him, but then went on to never talk about or acknowledge it even when in front of said victim's older sibling.

She tried to use another person as a punching back for her issues. That makes it fundamentally impossible for me to feel any kindness for her.

hope that makes sense/is clear as to Why i don't like her.

Oh yeah that makes sense! I share the same view, I think it would have been very interesting if she had at least gone full antagonist mode. I just wondered about how you changed it in HWHBH and How Niki's arc is there.

Forgiveness, Can You Imagine?

A man comes back from the dead after being left to rot in a special hell that was made for him by the universe. Upon being revived, he is checked in to an esteem mental wellness center where he will begin his recovery. All the while he mediates on the events that led up to his death, on grief, pain, fear, loneliness. Regret. This is a story about a main who rots in his regret Can this sorry mess of a man forgive himself enough to recover? Can a man who hated himself to the point of wanting to die learn to love himself? Can life-ruining actions be forgiven? Can he be good? Can he fix it?

Well, this story isn't about answer. It's more about the maybes. And maybe this sad sack will be okay when it's all over. Maybe. Here's to hoping.
