New Fiction 2021 - September
The Curse of Monkey Island dev. LucasArts (1997)
I’ll never have fun beating my head against adventure game puzzles, and this game even offers an easier mode which I declined to my own detriment. But the jokes land, the animation is astounding for a game of this vintage, and I had a lot of fun exploring all the pirate and gothic elements that have carried this series since the start.
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - Dominion Wars dev. Gizmo Games (2001)
I’ve enjoyed playing all of the Deep Space Nine video games this year, but this is kind of a down note compared to its more character-focused and bombastic predecessors. It’s just “faceless” as Eurogamer noted in their review, lacking the character moments that make this show special. The saving grace for me is the alternative history presented by its second campaign. It’s both horrifying and engaging as it strays from the path to present a “what if?” scenario akin to supposing that Germany won World War II.
"Old Buck" dir. David James Armsby (2021)
Oof, I feel you bud. It comes for all of us.
Candyman dir. Nia DaCosta (2021)
It steps confidently and knows what it wants to be, what it wants to say. I had to watch it twice when the ending didn’t land for me initially, mostly because the ending of the first movie flares out spectacularly. But this movie isn’t trying to be that, and deserves its own look independent of how it got here.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings dir. Destin Daniel Cretton (2021)
This follows the same early (and uninteresting) beats as those pre-Taika Waititi Thor movies, all that high court family drama stuff, but it brings it home with some cool boss fights and proper martial arts action scenes. I think I’ll always be weighed down by a desire for more interpersonal scenes when MCU just wants to throw cool superhero shit at me.
Malignant dir. James Wan (2021)
You think you know where it’s going, then you know where it’s going, but it arrives there in such garish and stylish duds that you’re still stunned when it sashays into the room.
Copshop dir. Joe Carnahan (2021)
Don't sleep on Copshop. It's mostly a throwback to hyperviolent tough bro shootout movies but the chamber drama aspect and non-bro protagonist (who still channels BDE) mixes it up in an interesting way. Just well-performed all around. Also Toby Huss's performance :chefkiss:.
The Card Counter dir. Paul Schrader (2021)
I should have known Paul Schrader going in, but I didn’t realize the prolific catalog of his until Googling afterward. This new movie hits on moments and looks that are great, but feels off in the end, like budgets were cut or (quite possibly) adjustments were made for a pandemic. I felt like it needed an extra couple of scenes, maybe ten minutes or so. Something to connect the kid to Isaac’s character more effectively.
Carrie dir. Brian De Palma (1976)
It starts out like a made-for-TV special about troubled teens, but then there are those scenes in Carrie’s house and any time she has to deal with bullies, and you know something’s not right. The way they build tension during a montage of senior prom scenes is perfect. It’s obvious what’s going to happen and yet your heart is pounding waiting for the drop, then it continues well beyond where it felt it was going to end. A renowned work for a reason built on stellar music and Spacek’s performance.

26 Nov 2020 NRC Mississauga Research Facility Opens
MISSISSAUGA, ON – The National Research Council (NRC)’s new advanced materials research facility has opened in Mississauga. Designed by Diamond Schmitt, the facility will serve as a national clean energy hub, supporting and undertaking foundational research of new materials for clean energy and other applications and transitioning them to industrial use.
This facility will bring companies, government, and universities together to collaborate on breakthrough projects in clean technologies and advanced materials, as part of the Canadian Campus for Advanced Materials Manufacturing (CCAMM), a joint initiative between the NRC and the Xerox Research Centre of Canada (XRCC).
The new 21,500 square foot facility is designed with flexible laboratory and office spaces that are divisible by movable / removable partition systems and with multiple layers secure access. The laboratory program includes characterization, dry, wet and a high bay pilot lab to accommodate the range of NRC’s research. The two-storey building is designed with the ability for future expandability vertically with minimal disruption to ongoing research activities.
The building exterior of precast concrete cladding and vertical fins provides solar shading and light dispersion into the interior. The façade provides a distinctive presence on the site while maintaining a complementary relationship with the surrounding campus architecture of the Sheridan Science and Technology Park.
“The opening of our new facility in Mississauga represents a major stepping stone for the National Research Council of Canada in advancing Canada’s clean energy agenda. Our vision is for this collaborative hub to become the home to new technologies that will enable industry to be more sustainable.” said Roger Scott-Douglas PhD, Acting President, National Research Council of Canada. “We look forward to working with our partners in accelerating the development of advanced materials technologies and their commercialization into disruptive products for industry.”
“The NRC Mississauga research facility is a unique facility that will act as a focal point for the development of high-performance advanced materials manufacturing.“ said Eric Lucassen, Project Architect, Diamond Schmitt. “The interior laboratory spaces and casework systems have been designed to provide maximum flexibility for the user groups while the exterior building features of rigger, quality, and permanence speak to some of the core values of the NRC.”

Derek brings extraordinary experience to designing mixed-use, office and academic facilities and is recognized nationally for his leadership in sustainable design and high-performance buildings. His recent work includes designing Canada’s Earth Tower in Vancouver, a proposed 38-storey mixed-use building built mainly of timber to Passive House standards. He was also the Project Architect for Orchard Commons, a large mixed-use hub at the University of British Columbia, and he led the design for numerous office projects planned for downtown Vancouver.
Most recently Derek worked alongside Diamond Schmitt on the Peter A. Allard School of Law at UBC and the Tommy Douglas Public Library in Burnaby BC – both of which reflect a deep commitment to practical, elegant design.
Derek is a member of the Architectural Institute of British Columbia and the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada. He is a LEED accredited professional, a Certified Passive House Designer and has served on the Advisory Design Panels of New Westminster and Surrey, B.C.
Said Newby: “I’m delighted to rejoin my colleagues here and look forward to expanding our presence in BC, across Western Canada and into the US.” Said Donald Schmitt, the firm’s co-founder: “Having worked with Derek in Toronto and collaborated when he returned to Vancouver with his family, we are excited to welcome him back to Diamond Schmitt”.

Ms. Wa’s career path with Diamond Schmitt began while still in high school, before deciding to pursue architecture. She returned while studying the profession at university and was hired upon graduation.
Her work includes civic and institutional projects with a focus on performing arts venues. Among these are the Four Seasons Centre and the renewal of what is now the Meridian Arts Centre in Toronto; the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia; and the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre in St. Catharines.
Now based in New York City where she manages the firm’s studio, she is a key member of the design team on the re-imagination of David Geffen Hall, the home of the New York Philharmonic at Lincoln Center.
She participates in public housing design review and other city building initiatives and has advocated for playgrounds and family-sized residential units to improve liveability in cities. “The design process has the potential to inspire creative and empathetic solutions,” said Ms. Wa.
Nigel Tai joined Diamond Schmitt in 2008 after gaining experience in Hong Kong and London. This seasoned fast-track architect has managed complex institutional projects from design concept approval to building opening in a highly condensed time frame as little as two years.
He was project architect on the award-winning Environmental Science and Chemistry Building at University of Toronto Scarborough, now recognized as a model of sustainable design in the laboratory typology.
Equally adept in working in a range of project procurement models and project scale, Mr. Tai is currently managing the design of two student residences at Queen’s University and Carleton University, and the final phase of construction of Transit City, the transformative residential project that is at the heart of the new Vaughan Metropolitan Centre.
“Architecture plays an increasingly important role in charting a sustainable future and advancing collaborative design solutions is the way to address this urgent objective,” Mr. Tai said.
He recently accepted a second term as a charter member of the Burlington Urban Design Advisory Panel.

Over the course of three decades, Diamond Schmitt Architects has steadily grown in both size and reputation with an increased focus on large-scale institutional buildings designed to meet the specific needs of performing arts organizations, as well as academic and medical research institutions, many of which have won international design awards. Design success at Diamond Schmitt Architects has been matched with equal success by budget and schedule control, a record in which the firm takes much pride.
Diamond Schmitt Architects has recently completed award-winning performing arts centres for the Canadian Opera Company, the National Ballet of Canada, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Washington’s Sidney Harman Hall, and the Garter Lane Theatre in Ireland. Currently in design at Diamond Schmitt Architects are concert halls for the Montreal Symphony Orchestra and the Denver Symphony Orchestra as well as a number of performance halls for smaller theatre groups in both Canada and the United States.

Three of recent projects by Diamond Schmitt Architects were recognized by Architectural Record and its sister publication BusinessWeek as being among the 10 best buildings in the world in the following years – 2004: The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jerusalem; 2007: the Four Seasons Center for the Performing arts in Toronto, Canada; 2008: The Sidney Harman Hall at the Harman Center for the Arts in Washington, D.C. Measurable results proving that these buildings changed people’s lives helped support the theory that good design equals good business.
As well, Diamond Schmitt Architects has received over 150 regional, national and international awards for excellence in design as well as awards from national building associations (brick, concrete, steel, wood, glass and bronze) and ‘green’ organizations such as the U.S. and Canadian Green Building Councils for leadership in the design of environmentally sustainable buildings.
Diamond Schmitt Architects has developed a reputation as a teaching office, encouraging an open and collaborative design process that over the years has attracted talented young architects from around the world. The architectural teams at Diamond Schmitt are lively and diverse with over 25 languages currently spoken within the office.
In 2004 and again in 2008 the international accounting and consulting firm Deloitte LLP included Diamond Schmitt Architects on their list of the 50 Best Managed Companies in Canada. In 2008 A.J. Diamond co-authored (with Donald Schmitt and Don Gillmor) Insight and On Site, The Architecture of Diamond and Schmitt. Part manifesto, part monograph, the book addresses critical urban issues and provides examples from the Diamond Schmitt architectural practice that both address and offer planning and design solutions to those issues.

Maldives twitter last week #1
Here are some interesting things Maldivians talked about on twitter last week. A long term collection could be very useful for reflection and analysis.
1. @reallynattu creates satirical voting app
Since this has leaked and people got a glimpse of this super duper top secret extremely sensitive totally legit app we've been working on. So releasing #VoteApp for public use. Tweet your features to add to this. iOS: https://t.co/yZYEepIJ3i Android: https://t.co/8W1jtkTwpz pic.twitter.com/EGbczx12rw
— Nattu (@reallynattu) March 7, 2018
An English translation:
The top text reads "Voteapp". Next to it is a drop down menu that says "Presidential election".
Below that the title says "Candidates". Below this the same portrait of current president Abdulla Yameen is displayed five times in a row, giving the voter a wide range of candidates to vote for.
Below this is the presidents full name, "Yameen Abdul Gayoom". The president doesn't use this version in his campaigning or current activities perhaps to distant himself from his brother Maumoon. Next to this the text reads "The driving force behind the progress that the Maldives is experiencing".
After this is a section where the voter decides what kind of reward they want for voting. They are given a choice of money (from well wishers), employment (a coordinator position), or a flat from Hulhumale'. In the mockup the voter has chosen money, and the options for collecting it (deposit, cheque, or a letter delivered to your residence) are below. As the voter has selected the first option, a field to enter their account number and reward amount sits next to the Bank of Maldives and Maldives Islamic Bank logos.
At the very bottom the text reads "press to vote", with the subtext "I swear to god that I won't change my vote". The word used for "my" is "alhugandu", a relic of the Maldivian caste system, which is the self depreciating word one must use for oneself when talking to someone who demands respect; whether it be your elders, a teacher, or certain dictators. The literal translation of "alhu" is slave.
2. @paperclippenny and @legacyofpain attend mandatory marriage classes
Marriage class: https://twitter.com/legacyofpain/status/971438002890203136
"no anal!!" - Marie #marriageclass
— Executive Hobo 🎈 (@legacyofpain) March 7, 2018
Marie seems to be one of their tutors.
Marie just called genitals "shameful organs". Wow, I call them fun parts. This is bleak. #marriageclass
— Executive Hobo 🎈 (@legacyofpain) March 7, 2018
A word for genitals in Dhivehi is "ladhuvethi gunavan", literally "shameful organ".
I'm pretending I'm watching a play. This is a haunting one man show about a man who has given up on life and is clutching on to religion because otherwise his life has no meaning. #marriageclass
— Executive Hobo 🎈 (@legacyofpain) March 7, 2018
Fucking hell! He just called us factories #marriageclass
— penny 🎈❓ (@paperclippenny) March 7, 2018

I don't think this guy thinks that women have a brain. To me it sounds like this guy thinks that women are just walking wombs. #marriageclass

3. Women of Maldives begin campaign to make male dominated tea houses more gender inclusive with #OccupySaiHotaa
It’s happening!!!! #OccupySaiHotaa https://t.co/tn51rHPT5q
— Hamy (@ashahamy) March 8, 2018
What we are trying to is eliminate gender segregated spaces and normalize eating at Sai Hotaa for women. Ultimate goal is for women to be able to do this without the need for ‘gatu’. #OccupySaiHotaa @KeevveMV
— Aryj (@Arrryj) March 8, 2018
"gatu" is the Maldivian slang version of "having the guts".

The headline reads: Occupysaihotaa: Women (go) to the tea houses! (sai = tea, hotaa = hotel).
Hi @Mihaarunews, The article states that I was leading the movement, which is inaccurate. The #Keevve movement and #OccupySaiHotaa are both lead by @NihayaAhmed, @ashahamy and me as explained over the phone. Please amend the article to reflect this.

4. Some men aren't too happy about it
Feminism is beautiful. But why occupy sai hotaa? Why not propose separate sai hotas for women? Men need the privacy to talk the "men talk" at saihota. Likewise, women. Issue-based agendas would facilitate women empowerment instead of trying to create a resemblance of men & women
— I l h a m (@ilhaamnil) March 8, 2018

Peeing in a bottle: Man’s greatest achievement? This is the best that Salafi propagandist Siru “Arts” could come up with to mock the #OccupySaiHotaa movement.
The black text on top reads: "This year the women's groups went to the tea houses next year (they'll go) fishing"
The red bottom text reads: “Next year - trying to pee into a thola bottle far away without utilising any devices”
On the bottom left the silhouette peeing is labeled "men" and the female rage comic face is lablled "women".
Today I've learned a lot. Thanks all who opposed nicely. This needs to move forward. At the same, time addressing other related issues are important. I've already decided to join the #OccupySaiHotaa movement. #twitterlessons

5. Maldives celebrates International Women's Day 2018

Just got called a "feminazi". Because I've this weird belief that women's bodies are their own business. It's radical, I know. That's why they liken me & my kind to nazis, because believing in female self-determination is roughly equivalent to genocide. 🙄
— F 🎈❓ (@_faz_) March 8, 2018
This #InternationalWomensDay let’s not forget LGBTIQA Dhivehi women who do not have the privilege of being visible, let alone freedom to be. We exist. Claims of intersectional allegiance fall short of true solidarity when our existence is not acknowledged. #ALLWomen

6. Maldives telecom company Dhiraagu gives police full access to opposition activist @Thayyib's SIM
Dhiraagu finally admits they gave police access to @Thayyib’s SIM. Even if it was to honour a court order, why did @Dhiraagu not have the basic courtesy to inform the service recipient of this action? Why did it keep issuing vague statements denying the accusation? https://t.co/G5PfGFW1rV

There was no lawful purpose. Since @Dhiraagu gave @PoliceMv the means to impersonate @thayyib they aided in the commission of a crime: identity fraud. A cloned SIM's real use is not to intercept messages, but to appear to others as the real one, i.e. to commit identity fraud. pic.twitter.com/PF06AOeNLO

A sad day, but I see NO other option than to quit @Dhiraagu after 19 years. I wonder why @dhiraagu did NOT appeal like @Apple did on maintaining customers’ trust & their integrity.. Especially knowing the Corruption Index Level of our State.@Mirshan :(@OoredooMaldives :)
— Ashraf Ayu (@Ashraf_Ayu) March 8, 2018
What @Dhiraagu did was a crime of the same magnitude as issuing an ID Card/Passport bearing @thayyib‘s photo & particulars for someone else to impersonate him. What an institutionalized criminal activity!#SIMcloningCompany pic.twitter.com/1fWj6GyEh6

Film is a work of art in the form of a series of live images that are rotated to produce an illusion of moving images that are presented as a form of entertainment. The illusion of a series of images produces continuous motion in the form of video. The film is often referred to as a movie or moving picture. Film is a modern and popular art form created for business and entertainment purposes. Film making has now become a popular industry throughout the world, where feature films are always awaited by cinemas. Films are made in two main ways. The first is through shooting and recording techniques through film cameras. This method is done by photographing images or objects. The second uses traditional animation techniques. This method is done through computer graphic animation or CGI techniques. Both can also be combined with other techniques and visual effects. Filming usually takes a relatively long time. It also requires a job desk each, starting from the director, producer, editor, wardrobe, visual effects and others. Movies and TV serials are a fun area where people love to spend their leisure time. Making a visit to the cinema or movie theatre sometimes seems like a waste f time and money. In such a scenario, streaming movies online is left as an option as it helps you not only save time and money but also make things convenient. Imagine life when you get to watch movies at your fingertips and for free. Watch a movie, drama or a serial. All of it at your comfort. Along with that, complete information about TV shows is present on the site. That information is based on IMDB rating, director, release date, duration, synopsis of the episode, and cast. In short, it is regarded as one of the best websites to watch TV shows as well as movies from different origins. TV MOVIE The first television shows were experimental, sporadic broadcasts viewable only within a very short range from the broadcast tower starting in the 1930s. Televised events such as the 1936 Summer Olympics in Germany, the 19340 coronation of King George VI in the UK, and David Sarnoff’s famous introduction at the 1939 New York World’s Fair in the US spurred a growth in the medium, but World War II put a halt to development until after the war. The 19440 World MOVIE inspired many Americans to buy their first television set and then in 1948, the popular radio show Texaco Star Theater made the move and became the first weekly televised variety show, earning host Milton Berle the name “”Mr Television”” and demonstrating that the medium was a stable, modern form of entertainment which could attract advertisers. The first national live television broadcast in the US took place on September 4, 1951 when President Harry Truman’s speech at the Japanese Peace Treaty Conference in San Francisco was transmitted over AT&T’s transcontinental cable and microwave radio relay system to broadcast stations in local markets. The first national color broadcast (the 1954 Tournament of Roses Parade) in the US occurred on January 1, 1954. During the following ten years most network broadcasts, and nearly all local programming, continued to be in black-and-white. A color transition was announced for the fall of 1965, during which over half of all network prime-time programming would be broadcast in color. The first all-color prime-time season came just one year later. In 19402, the last holdout among daytime network shows converted to color, resulting in the first completely all-color network season. Formats and Genres See also: List of genres § Film and television formats and genres Television shows are more varied than most other forms of media due to the wide variety of formats and genres that can be presented. A show may be fictional (as in comedies and dramas), or non-fictional (as in documenta””&ry, news, and reality television). It may be topical (as in the case of a local newscast and some made-for-television films), or historical (as in the case of many documentaries and fictional MOVIE). They could be primarily instructional or educational, or entertaining as is the case in situation comedy and game shows.[citation needed] A drama program usually features a set of actors playing characters in a historical or contemporary setting. The program follows their lives and adventures. Before the 1980s, shows (except for soap opera-type serials) typically remained static without story arcs, and the main characters and premise changed little.[citation needed] If some change happened to the characters’ lives during the episode, it was usually undone by the end. Because of this, the episodes could be broadcast in any order.[citation needed] Since the 1980s, many MOVIE feature progressive change in the plot, the characters, or both. For instance, Hill Street Blues and St. Elsewhere were two of the first American prime time drama television MOVIE to have this kind of dramatic structure,[4][better source needed] while the later MOVIE Babylon 5 further exemplifies such structure in that it had a predetermined story running over its intendevd five-season run.[citvatio””&n needed] In 2012, it was reported that television was growing into a larger component of major media companies’ revenues than film.[5] Some also noted the increase in quality of some television programs. In 2012, Academy-Award-winning film director Steven Soderbergh, commenting on ambiguity and complexity of character and narrative, stated: “”I think those qualities are now being seen on television and that people who want to see stories that have those kinds of qualities are watching television. Thank’s For All And Happy Watching Find all the movies that you can stream online, including those that were screened this week. If you are wondering what you can watch on this website, then you should know that it covers genres that include crime, Science, Fi-Fi, action, romance, thriller, Comedy, drama and Anime Movie. Thank you very much. We tell everyone who is happy to receive us as news or information about this year’s film schedule and how you watch your favorite films. Hopefully we can become the best partner for you in finding recommendations for your favorite movies. That’s all from us, greetings!” Thanks for watching the video today. ’Halloween’ review: 40 years later, Michael Myers slashes again
’Halloween’ review: 40 years later, Michael Myers slashes again https://ift.tt/eA8V8J ’Halloween’ review: 40 years later, Michael Myers slashes again
*** Three stars out of four
With hollow eyes and sagging cheeks, the flabby white mask of Michael Myers is horror’s great blank slate. Project your fears here, it says. Myers doesn’t speak. His movements never rise beyond a deliberate gait (well, aside from all the stabbing and strangling). Even his name is purposefully bland.
Decades after John Carpenter’s slasher landmark, David Gordon Green has resurrected the faceless Boogeyman of “Halloween” and set him loose on another Halloween night, 40 years later. Time has done little for Michael’s personality. He is still a poor conversationalist. (He hasn’t uttered a word in the intervening decades, says a doctor at the sanatorium that holds him.) He is still handy with a knife.
There are no roman numerals in the title of Green’s film, nor any of those dopey subtitles like 1998’s “Halloween H20,” which presumably delved into the very real fears of dehydration. As if to draw closer to the original (and to ignore the nine sequels and reboots in between), this “Halloween” has simply taken Carpenter’s 1978 title. And with gliding cameras, Carpenter’s score and original cast members Jamie Lee Curtis and Nick Castle (the man under the mask), it has tried very hard to take much more, too.
youtube
But while Green’s “Halloween,” which he penned with Danny McBride and Jeff Fradley, has faithfully adopted much of what so resonated in Carpenter’s genre-creating film — the stoic killer, the gruesome executions, the suburban nightmares — what makes his “Halloween” such a thrill is how it deviates from its long-ago predecessor.
Setting the template for countless slashers to follow, Carpenter’s film often reserved its most painful endings for more promiscuous girls or drug-using teens. As a grim reaper carrying out a metaphorical reckoning, Michael had questionable biases.
But what Carpenter did do was equate sex with violence, a connection that Green has elaborated on with a more feminist streak. Having survived the “Babysitter Murders” of 40 years ago, Laurie Strode (a fabulously fierce Jamie Lee Curtis, reprising the role that was her film debut) is now a self-described “twice-divorced basket case” living in a run-down house on the outskirts of the fictional Haddonfield, Illinois. She has turned her home into a training ground and domestic fortification (beneath the kitchen island is a well-armed shelter) for the second coming of Michael she’s always been sure will happen.
Her daughter (Judy Greer) and her son-in-law (Toby Huss) have grown tired of Strode’s fanatical survivalist paranoia. Certain that the world isn’t so bad a place as Strode insists, they plead for her to get over it. Their high-school daughter, Allyson (Andi Matichak) isn’t so sure, and she naturally gravitates to the grandmother she’s been shielded from.
//<![CDATA[ ( function() { pnLoadVideo( "videos", "G3Ny7JieR24", "pn_video_937697", "", "", {"is_mobile":""} ); } )(); //]]>
The curiosity of “Serial”-like podcast journalists (Jefferson Hall, Rhian Rees) introduces us to both the locked-up Myers and the withdrawn Strode. Before curtly dismissing them, Strode insists their investigation into Myers is pointless. “There’s nothing to learn,” says Strode, surely no fan of, say, neo-Nazi newspaper features. Hunt evil, she believes, don’t analyze it. It’s a message peppered throughout “Halloween” with clear reference to today (and to some of the earlier “Halloween” installments that sought to understand Michael).
Needless to say, both those who dismiss Strode’s deep-seated trauma and those who would rather study evil than confront it are gonna get their comeuppance. When Michael is transferred to another facility, hell predictably breaks loose. Once Michael is again stalking the suburban streets of Haddonfield, custom kitchens start seeing their cutlery disappear, and the shadows and closets of seemingly safe neighbourhoods are again rife with danger. Evil — soulless and unkillable — lurks everywhere, even if does wear a silly mask.
Green, the sometimes brilliant, sometimes confounding filmmaker of art-house indies (“George Washington”), broader comedies (“Pineapple Express”) and, more recently, a few starry studio projects (“Our Brand Is Crisis”), can’t recreate the eeriness of Carpenter’s original. But he pumps more blood into the story, both literally and figuratively. Foggy nights and gas-station bathrooms turn predictably gory, more so than the original. But the scenes that fall between those foreboding, twinkling piano notes have far more warmth and spirit than you’d expect. You almost wish Green — easily the most talented filmmaker in the franchise since Carpenter — was instead making something original here on the same streets, with the same cast (including the scene-stealing Miles Robbins) and none of the skull crushing.
But there are rituals to observe, and this “Halloween” lives up to its name.
//<![CDATA[ ( function() { pnLoadVideo( "videos", "tgCpmB0GZ9I", "pn_video_323986", "", "", {"is_mobile":""} ); } )(); //]]>
“Halloween,” a Universal Pictures release, is rated R by the Motion Picture Association of America for horror violence and bloody images, language, brief drug use and nudity. Running time: 105 minutes. Three stars out of four.

30 Years After Death, Bruiser Brody Still a Huge Influence in Pro Wrestling
30 years ago last week, Bruiser Brody was stabbed to death in an arena shower before a match. The killer was Jose Gonzalez, who often wrestled as Invader 1, a masked superstar from Puerto Rico. It was in the babyface locker room with witnesses to both the moments directly preceding and after the attack. Gonzalez called Brody into the shower, there were yells almost immediately, and then there was Brody, bleeding to death.
Look up Bruiser Brody and you’ll see a lot about the circumstances of his death. About how it went down, how the Bayamón police were slow to come and the ambulance even slower, leaving the giant wildman wrestler to his fate. And you’ll see terrible things about the aftermath, about how the subpoenas for witnesses like Dutch Mantel only arrived after the trial was over and Gonzalez was acquitted.
It’s a death which looms large in a pro wrestling world filled with deaths. A significant part of that is because of just what a big deal Bruiser Brody was, something which recedes into the haze of the territory days and the slowly faltering memories of 70 year old men. But make absolutely no mistake: Brody was huge, physically and reputationally, and the pro wrestling world lost something special when he died.
The deal is that Brody liked money and he liked to brawl. That combination led him to a globetrotting career which was exhausting even by the standards of the always traveling 70s and 80s wrestler. He’d go from territory to territory on a loop, never staying anywhere too long, and he’d work his gimmick to bloody perfection.
That gimmick was simple in retrospect, but proved to be revolutionary. He was a brawler, a wild six and a half feet tall mammoth with gigantic hair and a big black beard. His eyes would cross and he’d hold his hand out, yelling the non-word “huss” over and over. If he wasn’t doing that in an interview, he’d yell clear truths about his opponents with an articulateness which belied the fearsome image. It was all terrifying if you gave yourself over to even the smallest collapse of the barrier between reality and fantasy.
There were plenty of brawlers in those days (and now), but few did it with quite the same amount of violence and precision as Brody. His standard match was to go out into the audience and beat the hell out of whoever he was feuding with. They’d wander around the stands, do a blade job or two, then return to the ring, bloodied and exhausted, whereupon a crescendo would be reached and Brody would win.
Brody always won. That was part of his mystique. He wouldn’t work for a promoter without settling on what level of invincibility he was going to possess, then he held that promoter to his word. Famously, he would sometimes just decide that he wouldn’t play ball in the ring, spontaneously and without much warning. He didn’t sell for Invader 1 one time in the WWWF, a fact which may have come into play on that bloody night. Most famously, he stopped selling for a young Lex Luger during a cage match in Florida.
It wasn’t the only time Brody decided not to sell for someone, but it is the most famous, largely because the cameras were actually rolling and for just how egregious the stop to the action was. One minute Luger is punching Brody and the giant is selling, the next Brody is just standing there doing nothing. Luger decided he’d had enough, might get his ass kicked in a very real way if Brody went from apathetic to angry, and left the ring.
In a compelling discussion on the 30th anniversary of Brody’s death, Chris Jericho and Dave Meltzer talked about the man on the Talk Is Jericho podcast. The story of the Luger match is told. Luger was on his way out to Jim Crockett Promotions for a big payday and larger spotlight. Over lunch, he told Brody about how big his payday was going to be and how he needed to stay strong for his dream job. Hiro Matsuda, who was in charge of CWF, the Florida territory Luger was based in and Brody was visiting, told Brody to teach the kid some respect.
In other words, Luger was planning on pulling a Brody. Meltzer puts Brody’s stubborn refusal to lose or sometimes even sell into the context of his travel. Brody was biggest in Japan, much bigger than in the US; Japanese magazines would follow him on his journeys and run photos from his stateside matches. A loss for Brody in a small town house show wouldn’t mean much here, but over there it meant a huge dent to his income. Everything was done with an eye toward Japan and his truly legendary status there as the greatest gaijin wrestler of the age, alongside Stan Hansen. Brody was frustrating, but he was advocating for himself as a worker who had a family to feed in the only way a wrestler knew how.
It’s here where we return to Puerto Rico and his death. All sorts of theories have been floated and debunked, but Meltzer cautiously floats that Japan was the issue, that some dispute over a match or push was complicated by Brody’s stature in Japan. It turned violent and that was it. Ghoulishly, Gonzalez wrestled later that night; he continued to wrestle, mostly as a babyface, until he was 60.
What might have been? The consensus is that Brody would’ve finally gone to the WWF, where he would also finally lose a high profile, globally televised match to Hulk Hogan. It would’ve been the ultimate payday for the money-obsessed Brody, and a way to slow down or get out of the business entirely as he proceeded though his 40s.
But nobody ever leaves wrestling, not really. It’s easy to see him making cameos in ECW at its peak. After all, Terry Funk was already there, working crowd-pleasing, hyper-violent brawls to roaring Philadelphia crowds. Or a brief return to the WWF in the late 90s, a decade after the hypothetical Hogan match, to put over Steve Austin or The Rock.
We won’t know, but we have his influence, which is felt far and wide. Back in the gimmick days of the 90s, his former tag team partner, John Nord, adopted his gimmick as The Berzerker. Jimmy Jacobs lampooned the Bruiser Brody gimmick in his early career. Luke Harper deliberately looks a lot like Brody. Chris Jericho admitted to purposely channeling Brody’s style during his current New Japan run in the podcast. And every time there’s a bloody brawl in a crowd, there’s a faint echo of Brody’s iconic matches with Abdullah the Butcher.
Bruiser Brody was a big deal, because he made the violence of pro wrestling feel extremely real. That’s an art and it’s a somewhat different one from the balletic pro wrestling of 2018, where we know it’s an artistic simulation of violence. He was a difficult, stubborn, fascinating wrestler of the old school. 30 years after his stabbing, echoes of his life and style still linger.

Islamic Knowing During Starting a fast.
The Aesop for Kid active manual is created to be enjoyed by readers from any type of age. The Nintendo Change, unlike its rival gaming consoles the PS4 as well as Xbox One, utilizes small activity ink cartridges as opposed to discs, the initial house console due to the fact that the Nintendo 64 Two Decade ago to accomplish so. The video games are actually about the dimension of a shipping mark, producing them the best dimension to be swallowed by children. Except below is actually the complication and also option: they join love (arrrrr!) This book would not be actually complete without the love factors; that satisfies it, even if that is actually a little foreseeable. This publication will possess been actually a great deal briefer without the needless allegories for everything. The game appears beautiful on Android as well as possesses a high-octane soundtrack to recommend you onwards. And whether Caraval is actually real or otherwise, Scarlett must find Tella prior to the 5 nights from the video game more than or even a harmful domino effect of outcomes are going to be set off, as well as her precious sibling will certainly vanish for good.
