Fellow Huskies Become Family

A chance meeting led freshman Audrey Edgell to enjoy Homecoming, 2018 in style; a whirlwind experience courtesy of BU Alum, Timothy Hoffman. In the process, she gained a family member.

Edgell, who chose BU partly because of the friendly campus atmosphere, met Hoffman by offering a friendly gesture of her own at the Bloomsburg Fair, after she and her mom encountered Hoffman navigating the muddy trek back to his car. 

“I over did it with my walking and everything hurt” explained Hoffman who had recently had back surgery “I was looking for a place to sit and I hear ‘Sir…are you alright?’”

“All these people were just walking right by him” explained Audrey “My mom had raised me to step up and help people who need help.”

Hoffman refused help at first, but relented at their insistence. As they chatted, the ‘68 alum mentioned how unsure he was about attending his upcoming 50th reunion and was considering asking a BU student to be his spotter during the long day of festivities.

“We chatted about how I wasn’t sure if I could make it without backup” joked Hoffman, who graduated from BU with a BS in Education and spent thirty-four years teaching before retiring in 2002 to be the Physics Lab Coordinator at St. Joseph’s University.  

“My mom and I just looked at each other” said Edgell “I knew I was going to be on campus anyway, so why not put my time to good use?”

2018 had been a particularly tough year for Hoffman. In addition to his surgery, his wife, also a Bloomsburg alumnus, had passed away earlier in the year. He was nervous not only about his physical condition, but also the idea of returning to campus with the loss of his wife still very heavy on his heart.

“I don’t think he was going to go alone” said Edgell “and I felt strongly that if he had the opportunity to do something like that, he should.”

So the Medical Imaging major, on campus a mere six weeks, accompanied Timothy Hoffman to his 50th reunion. She was on a motor tour of campus led by University Archivist, Bob Dunkleberger ‘05(H), had a birds-eye view of the parade from the Greenly Center, hung out at the Alumni Tent party where she networked with alums from across several decades, and had an impromptu meeting with President, Dr. Bashar Hanna at the Huskies football game.

“It was crazy” recalled Edgell “You go from helping someone across a parking lot to meeting the president of your university six weeks into your freshman year.”

Edgell said her favorite part was the 50th reunion dinner at Monty’s where the class of 1968 shared stories of sit-ins, dress codes, “the Nook” and the turbulent Vietnam era.

“It was so nice to hear their experiences and they all gave great advice and wished me luck” said Edgell “They were such energetic and welcoming people and had such pride at being Huskies.”

For Audrey, it was a day hanging out with BU Alums. For Hoffman, however, it was much more.

“She was just so polished in the way she carried herself” explained Hoffman “She gave me confidence and moral support and took an enormous amount of pressure off my shoulders.  I felt free to enjoy the day, even though I’m sure she would have preferred being with her friends.”

While Hoffman may have been grateful for Edgell’s assistance, he was not the only one who gained from the experience. Edgell adamantly refused Hoffman’s offer to pay her, saying that the insight she gained and the camaraderie she experienced was invaluable. She now has another member of her support system while on campus.

“He told me that he’s a call away if I need him” said Edgell “I feel lucky to have someone willing to be that much of a support in my life. He’s like a grandfather to me.”
