Technology Connections' series on lamps

This channel has a lot of fun and interesting stuff, but I think my favorite videos are from the lamp series.  Watching it really brought home how absolutely shitty our lighting options are without electricity.  I'd never really considered how indoor lighting used to mean fire that was constantly letting off smoke, fumes, and flickering in drafts. Ugh!  Also, I'd never seen a gas mantle lamp before so the explanation of how they work blew my mind.

it’s going to be absurdly, dangerously cold in my area for a couple of days, starting in the morning. I am preparing by covering my windows with blankets and filling my hurricane lamps with oil. I have never felt so much like a product of my mother.
