#hunting leases in florida

tuesday again 7/11/23, timezone change edition
the last time i wrote one of these things, i was not quite fully packed up in ma. now, i am technically temporarily homeless in houston, bc the apartment i originally signed on was completely unlivable. crashing in an acquaintance's guest room for a bit while i have a very bad time with apartment hunting round 2
i have lived in south florida, staten island, and various shithole student housing. i understand seasonal bugs in hot places and things such as different kinds of roaches and palmetto bugs. when i say that apartment had the worst roach infestation i've ever seen i fucking mean it. in theory i will get my full deposits back, but they're taking their sweet fucking time about it.
but having that full yes-i-know-about-seasonal-roaches conversation with new acquaintances and leasing agents takes too long so i've resorted to saying it had a horrific bedbug problem, which everyone seems to go Oh Okay Yeah Reasonable For You To Leave much more quickly.
listening
a lot of early aughts dance pop standards, to chase away the agonies as i drive to and from apartments only to get ghosted, find they were rented a week ago, or find that they look absolutely nothing like the pictures. i was really torn on which britney song to pick for this week until my sister sent me Twin Flame by Maude Latour, which i can only describe as "douchebag get the girl back song but for lesbians". spotify
also how do we like the "featured link from bandcamp or soundcloud with additional spotify link" format? in an ideal world i would buy all my music directly from the artists but realistically i use spotify 90% of the time. i don't know what your life is like, tell me if this is helpful or not.

reading
my best friend made sad faces at me until i read The Flatshare by Beth O'Leary, and it was a little nice to see someone else's dire housing situation get resolved neatly and with thematic consistence in several hundred pages. it was also nice to text her snippets with "WHAT?????" every so often. this is a reading experience i don't have very often bc our current reading tastes don't overlap even a little bit.
i don't have much to say about it bc i didn't have particularly strong feelings and don't really read mainstream straight romance, so i can't point out what this did differently or well compared to its peers. if nothing else, it was a fluffy bit of distraction, and i think that's kind of the point?
(image from Tor) also read Saad Z. Hossein's Kundo Wakes Up novella in a waffle house while eating some of the best scrambled eggs i've ever had in my life.
this novella was the closest thing i've ever read to "aging English professor has an affair" without actually containing any of those elements. generally i enjoy his work, but this was sort of a way to check up and tie off many characters from previous works with a sort of light frosting of "my wife left me and i don't know why [ rot13:v pna znxr fbzr thrffrf ohg gurer vf ab zbzrag bs frys-ernyvmngvba, bapr ur svaqf uvf jvsr ur whfg perrcf ba ure sebz nsne naq nsgre qrgrezvavat fur'f abg jvgu nalbar arj znxrf gur gerzraqbhf fnpevsvpvny qrpvfvba gb yrnir ure nybar op fur'f zhpu unccvre jvgubhg uvz. gurer vf ab zbzrag bs frys-ernyvmngvba nobhg jul fur zvtug unir yrsg uvz. xhaqb arire trgf bhg bs uvf bja shpxvat urnq bapr.]"
while The Gurkha and the Lord of Thursday novella (TREMENDOUS) and Cyber Mage book (fun but with some dire pacing issues) are fairly standalone, i cannot imagine you'd get much out of Kundo Wakes Up if you haven't read the other two. for some reason none of the libraries i have access to have his other book Djinn City, so we'll have to procure that elsewhere.

watching
the dnd movie, the day after i broke my lease on the roach apartment. i don't remember a ton about this movie. do generally like a heist. michelle rodriguez was hot
-
playing
genshin. listen. it is a free and familiar way to turn my brain off by doing open world exploration and puzzles but CRUCIALLY! most of it is completely new to me. i have not played this game in a year and a half. i have not played this game since right before enkanomiya. there was no chasm. there was no Sumeru. i have absolutely no idea what’s happening lore-wise.
i pulled for the fancy ice claymore lady and got a catboy archer (at least i think it is a catboy? the ears do give a pharaoh hound vibe... he is distinct from the extant dogboy archer). not terrible but not my vibe.
youtube
i have been enjoying the shit out of the temporary summer event carnival space. they really did pull out several stops by introducing a ton of genuinely interesting and innovating little new mechanics and mini games. delightful!

making
altering the worst shorts ive ever seeeeeeeeen with a demure little two-inch side slit on both legs bc my thighs simply will not quit. mens shorts are so much better than womens shorts in nearly every way except for the catastrophic physical fit issues.
when i got ghosted by two different apartments on saturday i bought myself a spoon ring so chunky it makes my other chunky rings look positively delicate by comparison. not very comfy to drive in but fine to wear while tippy tappying on the spreadsheets
a girl i saw for one singular awful date in 2016 called my hands "coarse but honest" and i think about that every time my hands are in a photo. what did that even fucking MEAN, [REDACTED]?

Hello. I am a 34-year-old queer black single mother born, raised, and still residing in northwest Florida with my 14-year-old trans teen (him/they). I am also a survival (online) sex worker who suffers from mental health issues. I have always dreamed of moving out of Florida but due to mostly financial reasons (and fear), I have stayed all my life while raising my child here and gave up on that dream.
Although my immediate and extended family resides in the same city as I do, I am estranged from them due to a lot of personal traumatic reasons. A major one is that when I was pregnant NONE of my family members accepted me into their homes while I was pregnant and I was forced to live in a homeless shelter for pregnant teens and young women. The shelter was located in the same neighborhood that they lived in.
There are many other traumatic situations that I have experienced while living here that I won't go into detail about that have happened to me. All of this has caused me to isolate myself for years cultivating a life only online and rarely leaving my home which as a result has massively damaged my mental health. Through all of this, I have done the best I could raising my teenage child with little to no real familial or parental support (their father is in prison for life).
And now that my child identifies as a transgender teenager, I do not feel that it is safe for me to raise them in Florida due to the recent anti-trans bills that have been passed in this state recently. So that is why I have created this GoFundMe campaign to help get me and my child out of this state to start a fresh life in a trans (and queer) supportive state.
I would like for my child to be able to get the medical care that they may have a hard time getting here in Florida. I would like for my child to be able to play sports in high school if they choose to since they do not feel comfortable playing them here. These are just some of the things I want my child to experience without feeling like their existence is being invalidated by anti-trans bills that are being passed in this state. I know America isn't openly accepting of LGBTQ+ people as a whole, but right now some states are better than others in that regard and I know for sure Florida isn't one of those states and I want my child to have a chance at a better life.
I also want a chance at a better life. I feel that the longer I stay in Florida the more my mental health declines. This is the place I was born and raised in yet it has NEVER felt like home to me no matter how hard I have tried to make it.
The money that I am raising will go to relocation costs which include: plane tickets, an Airbnb (I will be staying in an Airbnb when I get to our destination so that I can start apartment hunting when I get there), furniture removal services and other moving supplies and necessities I will need. My lease will end June 1st so I am planning accordingly at the moment to be out of here at the end of May.
My dream has always been to leave this state and I kind of gave up on that dream but I CAN'T give up on my child and if I continue to stay here that's what I feel like I am doing. I know things are tough for a lot of us right now but if you can give ANYTHING I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you for reading. <3

Will Floridians Always Pay for Unnecessarily Higher Gasoline Prices?
Florida is most widely known for its touristy vacation spots. Whether its basking in the sun along the Emerald Coast, taking part in the Everglades python hunt competition, touring historical St. Augustine, or taking the kids to Disney World, visitors have a diverse array of diversions from which to choose. Florida is truly the “Sunshine State”. But few remember that not long ago, Florida was also once home to domestic oil production. But, Floridian’s and federal officials have chosen to severely limit drilling in the state, resulting in Floridians having to paying for higher gasoline prices.
In the early 1940s, the governor of Florida knew oil could bring badly needed jobs and revenue to the state. So, the governor offered a $50,000 prize for whomever could be the first to discover oil in the state, and in 1943, oil was discovered in southwest Florida. Since then, more than 120 million barrels of oil have been produced. Most of the oil has been produced from eight onshore fields stretching from Fort Myers to Miami. One of the significant fields was the Jay Field, discovered in 1970. The Jay Field was 8 miles long; and by 1974, it was producing 84,000 barrels per day of oil. In 1978, Florida’s statewide production was at 2,000,000 barrels per day. But Floridians chose to dramatically restrict new drilling. So by 2020, statewide production had declined to only 1,375 barrels of oil per day.
Since the 1940s, there has been strong interest by the oil industry to explore in the Sunshine State. But after the Deepwater Horizon Oil/BP Spill temporarily damaged part of Florida’s coast, Floridians passed a Florida constitutional amendment banning offshore drilling in the state; 69% of the voters supported the passage of this amendment.
Now that Floridians are having to pay for higher gasoline prices than residents of oil producing states, there is now discussions about opening Florida to onshore oil exploration. Governor Ron DeSantis who opposes drilling in the Everglades, has stated that drilling in Florida would potentially bring jobs to the state. Even President Biden, who has leased out less federal acreage for oil and gas exploration than any other president since J.F. Kennedy, is now pushing to drill on federal lands within the state of Florida to help offset gasoline prices.
So, might Floridians once again discover as they did in the 1970’s, that they can enjoy both lower gasoline prices and fun the sun if they allow oil drilling in their state? Only Floridians know.

Okay, I don't have a guide per se, but I've volunteered with the Red Cross and lived in Florida and had no money all at the same time, so I can give you a little back-of-the-envelope list on disaster prepping when you have little money. The rule of thumb with hurricane prepping is "The First 72 is On You," which means you should be prepared for it to take three days for anything useful to start happening in your community. You should be ready for those three days.
The first thing you do is make sure your papers are organized! Your important papers are the last thing you're going to want to be hunting down if you've got to hunker down or hit the road, so keeping them in one safe place is crucial. Birth certificates and passports, obviously, but also proof of insurance for anything you insure. Proof of residency, including a copy of your lease. A list of phone numbers for your doctors. A pay stub proving your work and your income if applicable. All of this stuff can help you get aid later if you need it and it's great to have in one big envelope that you update every hurricane season.
Next up is prescription medications! Those can be really hard to stock up on, especially if money is tight or your prescription is controlled, but you can help yourself out by always getting your refills as early as you can. A lot of times there's a couple days of overlap between the end of one prescription time and the start of the next that will let you gradually build a buffer, and even if there is not, being prompt with your refills makes it more likely that you'll have what you need in a disaster. Keep all your family's medications in a central place if you can, and have a big zipper bag nearby so you can pack them in two minutes if need be. Take pictures of all your pill bottles and keep them in your phone just in case. (If the worst does happen and you're in a disaster with no meds, contact the Red Cross and ask for Disaster Health Services, they might be able to facilitate early refills.)
Next: gasoline! I know this is a hard one and it's not even applicable if you don't have a car, but do your best to keep at least 1/2 tank of gas in your car during hurricane season. The second the hurricane warning starts, getting gas is going to become 10x more time consuming and difficult, and you're going to want to use that time for other stuff. A half tank of gas might make the difference in being able to evacuate before the roads clog up.
Next: Food and Water! This only comes into play if you aren't going to/cannot evacuate during a hurricane, but is also useful during other storms, power outages, etc. You don't have to get fancy with your disaster foods. Don't assume you're going to be baking bread or making gourmet meals. Get the same foods you usually get, but with a focus on "Can I cook this thing on a camp stove or eat it straight from the can if I need to?" Canned pastas, canned vegetables, canned soup, all great disaster foods. Dry pasta and canned tomato sauce is great too, even ramen noodles. Granola bars are excellent, as is dried fruit (raisins are usually cheap) and cereals. Canned or dry milk is nice to have around. The best way to build your emergency supply is a little bit at a time, until you have three days worth of food for your family, and then make sure to rotate it before it goes bad. It is easy to rotate and replace your emergency food if it's stuff you'd eat anyway, and if you do end up in a disaster, you'll feel better if the food is familiar and not weird MRE packets or something. If you're in a disaster situation, use your fridge and freezer stuff first, then go for your supply stash.
The rule of thumb for water is one gallon per person per day, so figure three gallons for each member of your family. There's lots of ways to store water, but I go with the square stacking water jugs you can order from Walmart. They're eight bucks each, store three gallons of water, and if you do a bleach rinse on them before filling them, your water should be good for six months. Use a piece of tape to write the date on them when you fill them.
Last is power and fuel. If resources are tight you almost certainly won't have a generator, but that's okay. Try and get yourself a power bank for your phones, one of those battery packs that will charge a phone six or seven times. They're about 45 dollars for a good one, but they're also useful in your everyday life. It's worth saving up for. If you have a grill, try and secure an extra propane tank because you can use the grill for basically all your cooking. If you haven't got a grill you can buy a camp stove (check your thrift stores!) and some little propane bottles in the camping section at Walmart. Do not use any of these things indoors. For indoor light, you can get candles if you need to (garage sales, thrift stores, post-holiday markdowns are all great) or stock up on flashlights. Those little $1 flashlights and headlamps in the camping section give off more light than you'd think! In a pinch you can use your phone, but only if you've got a way to recharge the battery. Remember you're not prepping for the apocalypse, you're keeping your family safe for a few days until things start to get better or until you can leave.
The real key to disaster prep when you're poor is you have to think way ahead of time. You can't be one of those people panic-shopping and sweeping the shelves when the disaster looms because that's expensive! You need to start way ahead of time and buy one or two things every shopping trip and just set them aside against the day they'll be needed. Don't be tempted into thinking you need fancy equipment or storage solutions or anything like that, either. A rubber tub will hold all the stuff you need, and if you keep a checklist on top to make sure you've also got stuff like dish soap and an extra can opener right there if you need it, you're going to be way ahead of the game. Good luck and be safe!
cross-posting a question for a friend on mastodon: does anyone have a guide handy for disaster prep on a budget? more specifically for hurricanes, and even more specifically from a site that isn't trad-mom's-prepper-homestead-dot-biz
