Like even though I haven't read all of them, I literally know you such an amazing writer. <333 But anywhoo, can you by any chance do a matchup for me, hon? So about me: Physical Appearance/Discription: I am a 5'5 girl who is 17 and half. I have shortish brown curly hair (3b curls). I am a pretty skinny person but I do have some sort of muscle on me. I do also have a bit of ance and some acne scars on my face. I have pale white skin. Whenever I get ready to go out of the house, my go to makeup is just mascara and a bit of eyeliner. But when I want to get ready to go somewhere fancy/get ready formally, I do more then that. I have more of a tom-boyish/skater/streetwear style, but when I get ready ready, I can clean up nice. 😜

Personality/Who am I: I am 100% an extrovert. I love talking to people, but sometimes I don't talk to them, not cus I am shy, but cus I just don't wanna, yknow? Likes/Hobbies: My favorite animals are snakes and dogs. I love candy and sweets and chocolate. Like I have the biggest sweet tooth ever! Like I LOVE chocolate. I like to dance and listen to music.(My music taste is all over the place, but I will never, I mean NEVER, listen to country 🙅) Love hip-hop, pop, & rap the most tho. I also love going to the beach and hanging out with the fam, but also love the suburbs/towns/city and hanging out with friends but I also like the countryside and everything like that. I think I just love every single place honestly.I love the color green. I also love watching disney movies, and horror movies, and fantasy movies. I do read, but I can't really read well 😭 (And write, as you can tell 😭) Dislikes: I hate slow-walker, people are are disrespectful, losing (I am really competitive), pickles, onions, & spicy food. Oh, and country music. And I hate seeing blood and all that type of stuff (in real life at least, I can still watch horror movies, just not action ones with blood 😭) I also like spring. I love taking picture, like of everything. Especially people, places, the sky, animals, and flowers! I like to dance hip-hop (maybe even two partner dances 🙈).

Hunger Games Matchup -Closed-

Okay I actually probably need to put some trigger warnings in this one. So without further ado...

TW: Mentions of sex trafficking, trauma, implications of pedophilia, and unhealthy coping mechanisms. 

•──⋅☾FINNICK ODAIR ☽⋅──•

I won’t lie, my intentional reaction said Cinna. However, I placed that thought on the back-burner while I sifted methodically through the other characters in case I found one that I felt suited you better. And I am glad I did that, because I did find someone better. 

Finnick Odair. 

Initial characterization of Finnick exemplifies him as a careless casanova, infamous for his routine and seemingly habitual trysts every time he visits the Capitol. And for most of the book, that is all that is known of him. Flirtatious, shallow, flighty, definitely not someone I think you would keep in company of. 

However, later on it is revealed that Finnick’s womanizing, ego-centric tendencies are a defense mechanism installed to protect himself from the emotional turmoil of the role of sex worker forced upon him by President Snow to appease influential Capitol women. Mind you, he was fourteen. The horrors of his circumstances cannot be understated. 

Beneath his philandering veneer, he is someone who is deeply wounded, accustomed to being used for his body, and craves genuine human connection and conversation. He needs someone who appreciates him for him, and not just the physical pleasures he can give them. Bro literally just wants to be seen as a human being instead of a sex object for the first time in his adult life and I do not blame him. 

I believe this is where his relationship with Annie comes into play. She was someone who was deeply empathetic, intelligent, and intuitive. Someone who saw Finnick for who he really was. Possibly the only person who saw him as such. And based on your description of yourself, I believe you would fill his role beautifully. 

You see, you aren’t just smart. You are observant. While I still feel as though initial impressions of Finnick would be lacking at best and straight up antagonistic at worst, I think that with the more time you spend around him, the more you’d be able to see flickers of something deeper beneath his facade. 

And I think you’d be the only person to see and understand this. I think your skeptical nature would feed into this as well. You would refuse to accept that he is as hollow-minded and shallow as he presents himself to be. 

The way his easy-going smile falters whenever he thinks no one is looking. The mild contortion of his facial features into a brief pained expression when someone insults his promiscuity. This wincing lasting mere milliseconds before it is completely replaced by a lackadaisical smile and a casual shrug. The way his shoulders sag, as is burdened by heavy emotional weight when he thinks that no one else is around. The strained sighs he emits whenever he feels as though no one is listening- as though no one is paying attention. The way rigidity spreads into the muscles along his back and shoulders whenever President Snow’s name is so much as mentioned. 

No, there is definitely more going on here. And given your quiet, analytical, and observant nature, I think you would definitely notice. I also think that you would wish to pursue this deeper, if only because you touched on how much your value deep connection. 

Once you and Finnick start talking, I think he would be hooked. And I think he would open up to you much faster than normally would, perhaps to his own chagrin. You are so full of life and compassion. The way your eyes light up when you start to infodump on your favorite subjects. You are different. You don’t see him as an object. You aren’t cowed by his flirtations and attempts to keep you at an arm’s length. You genuinely just want to get to know him. The two of you would have such meaningful conversations, skipping over idle chatter and frivolous small talk entirely because that is just the kind of person you are. 

And just like that,  it would be over for the poor man. 

You represent every single thing he has lacked in life: genuine connection, empathy, and companionship. 

You would become his new Annie (assuming in this scenario, Annie was either killed in her games or lost herself to the point of no return).

Finnick would not be super receptive to your self-deprecating sense of humor, wishing you could see the beauty he sees in you. I think he would call you out on it and make some flirtatious comment sultry enough to make even the most stoic blush. He doesn’t know what else to do so he defaults to his usual tactics of flattery. Although, this time it’s different. This time he actually means it. He’s just genuinely trying to help. 

“My dear, if it is beauty you seek, you need not look further than a mirror.”

“I don’t know if anyone has ever told you this before,” Finnick would fix you with a level-gaze, his seafoam green eyes unwavering and uncharacteristically serious, “but you are very attractive.” 

You could attempt to retaliate, uttering something along the lines of “you aren’t too unattractive yourself.” To which he would merely laugh, his broad shoulders shaking under the exertion of the momentum.

He’d flash you one of those smug grins of his. “Oh. I know.”

Freaking Finnick. 

Perhaps you were from District Four and met him briefly before his games, then were forced to reconcile with the stark juxtaposition to the boy he was prior to the man he ultimately became. 

Or Perhaps you were a victor from a previous Game who met him during the Quarter Quell and saw something in him no one else could, only to be wrapped up in the rebellion’s plot.

Either way, I do think it would be good news for you. 

If you were a fellow Victor rescued by the rebels, perhaps you would have a chance at saving Finnick, or maybe it would lead to you sacrificing yourself in his stead. 

If you were the “special someone back home”, the Capitol would likely kidnap and torture you for leverage over Finnick as they did Annie. Finnick would likely still perish, spending his last breath viciously attempting to rescue you.

But either way, I think this would be a huge point of contention in your relationship. Finnick absolutely would NOT accept you going with him to infiltrate the Capitol with the Mockingjay. I’ll let whether or not you end up listening to him be up to you. 

As often it goes with the Hunger Games, I believe that this story is likely to end in tragedy. Although, it is not without a small chance of hope. Maybe you can act differently, maybe you can be the person to provide Finnick with the happy ending he deserved but was ultimately denied.

These characters are both great examples of this theme and their matchup is truly a difficult one to pick a victor.

And with that said, I still think out of the two, the most doomed by the narrative is Spamton.

I was an avid reader of the hunger games, reading all the novels over and over, and Prim was the first character I've read about that introduced me to the concept of a character being doomed from day one. from page one. No matter how much katniss goes through, she is unable to save prim, and prim dies at the end anyway (and because of the people on her side, no less). It's a tragedy that I could go on about forever.

However, Spamton takes it a large step further, and deltarune as a whole really focuses on this concept with darkners in general, but what Spamton has over Prim is his awareness in the narrative. Deltarune is very meta when the plot progresses, and Spamton is nothing more than crappy spam email, and that, in its ENTIRETY, is his very being. No more, no less. He's introduced as a one-off fight, that you (if playing blindly) have the option of not progressing with his plotline, introducing his FIRST ending– being ignored/overlooked and thus treating him EXACTLY how the regular person treats spam email. (as you should though. Spam email sucks)

That's because, in Deltarune, essentially you're the one overseeing the narrative, and you make the choice to encounter him as a boss or not. While other darkners of cyber city have some sort of purpose (from ms.paint-esc programs to computer viruses etc), Spamton has none. He is not liked. And the one moment in his life he was admired, he wasn't the one that got himself to the top and he fell from grace anyway due to his help mysteriously leaving him to fail (again).

So how does this all make him doomed by the narrative? Well this gets to him, drives him to aspire to have purpose and get to [Heaven], but no matter what he does he's always set to fail. Even with the help of a higher power than he is, he falls anyway. He fails to get NEO without player intervention, and when he does, there's only one ending for him. Every. single. run.

It doesn't end there. The point of deltarune is that your choices don't matter/won't change the story. Despite that, if you DO somehow find the Snowgrave Route (giving the player the opportunity to radically alter the story), Spamton does get the upper hand in this route for a short bit, but even STILL his only ending is his failure.

This is all because he has absolutely no control. His very existence is that he will never have any control. He gets one ending, no matter how much change YOU as a PLAYER can possibly make. No matter how much dust he stirs up trying, begging, pleading for something to change.

I've mentioned this before in the spamton vs light poll, but I do want to mention it again as this is just how deep his doomed-by-the-narrative status goes.

In September 2022, the Spamton sweepstakes had Spamton (outside of the game) market various products that people could win if they donated to the charity event. At the very end, we were faced with this:

We, as the audience, players AND non-players of deltarune, could donate to either free spamton or silence him. That's how little control he has as a character. Inside AND outside the narrative he has a place in, his only ending is out of his own manipulation or power. His entire character is that the narrative exists without him being a key in its overall ending, and he is doomed to witness his own downfall no matter how many endings it takes.

(Also, may I add, Toby Fox creator of deltarune, donated 15k just to silence him. How hilarious is it that the person that basically WROTE YOU INTO EXISTENCE wants you dead. Ever since then I can't get over that)

Spamton's tragedy defines him in his motivations, his dialogue, his endings, and EVEN his appearance (being depicted as a literal puppet). His design, lore, and character is completely about how he IS doomed by the very game he has a presence in, and nothing, not even the player, not even YOU, can change that.

for my personality, id say im pretty bubbly and excitable. i’m an isfj & cancer, & i try to look on the bright side and try to listen to/help when they’re sad. im very affectionate with the people im close to, and i tend to cling onto my friends arms and hug them a lot. i love anything soft or cute, especially animals!! im kinda scared of bugs though, but i still always try to take them outside. i get distracted pretty easily, and have a hard time dealing with change. i tend to be a bit bossy and unreasonable when it comes to something i’m interested in. plus i get really moody and irrational sometimes when it comes to something i want (im very stubborn lol). i also really like going for walks, shopping, yoga, baking (even though i’m dreadfully awful at it), and reading. i like complimenting strangers, and i try to see the best in everything & everyone! though i can’t really tolerate it if somebody is overly cruel or rude to the people i care about. i have a very “do no harm, take no shit” mentality :)
