Mais can you recommend some underrated solid romance driven Pak shows? I've watch most of the mainstream ones. TIA! Also I'm already watching yunhi in case you were gonna rec that.
ek toh "romance driven" already narrows down the field SO much which is necessarily not a good thing for me cuz i haven't watched a lot of Pakistani dramas to begin with. also I feel like nowadays the definition of "romance" has changed. it's a fairly new wave of dramas that actually show the physical intimacy aspect of romance in PakDramas. otherwise the older PakDramas wouldn't necessarily have such things (and the ones they did unn pe Pemra ban laga deta tha xD). ab toh if anyone says "romance drama" toh I immediately think they are asking for something like Tere Bin which...bhayee aisa yahan aur koi product nahin hai.
KHAIRRR. some of the "romances" that I have enjoyed in PakDramas I can list in no particular order.
Ishq Tamasha (Mehrab x Mirha)
Aap Kay Liye (Shaheer x Washma)
Mera Naam Yousuf Hai (Yousuf x Zulekha)
Khudgarz (Junaid x Aaira)
Yeh Raha Dil (Zaki x Hayat)
Sanam (Harib x Aan)
Diyar e Dil (Suhaib x Arujumad / Wali x Faraa)
Aik Nayee Cinderella (Romaan x Misha)
Dillagi (Mohid x Anmol)
Khamoshi (Shahram x Arsala)
Mere Humdum Mere Dost (Haider x Aiman)
Malaal (Jawad x Zinia)
Ehd e Wafa (Shahzain x Rani)
Chupke Chupke (Faaz x Meenu)
Suno Chanda (Arsal x Jiya)
Udaari (Arsh x Meera)
Jo Bichar Gaye (Rumi x Sonia)
filhaal can't think of any other. kuch yaad aya toh will post.

DILIP KUMAR'S 80'S CHANGE OF HEART.
If analyze Dilip Kumar interviews right from the 1950s till 2000s, his stress on & pleading to the contemporary film personalities of the time, has always been to focus on the best possible literature to base their scripts & screenplays on, & take the lead via their most powerful medium, in evoking deepest depths of subtlety & inward seep, thus inspiring the society around them & the nation as a whole, to get improved in their way of life, in the process.
But utterly shocked to find that the same Dilip Kumar, by 80's, had completely overturned his long held beliefs, & begun to toe the the film groupie line, namely that, films are merely a reflection of society, & since society is so full of duplicity & corruption & low class, 'tis the society & it's different streams that have to first pull their own socks, so that cinema can then get inspired enough to reflect them.
What caused this sudden 360 degree mind shift!
We've already blogged over his extremely low productivity ll though the 70's. Did he figure out how he was being 'curbed' by extraneous forces, for his idealistic & upwardly mobile thoughts, that were contrary to the intended direction of the trendsetters & film 'decision-makers' of the time?
We clearly notice how his productivity suddenly increased in the 1980's, but choice & quality of work produce dipped noticeably in substance & core.
The Master of cinema, had, it seems, learnt to dance to a different Master after all. .. We mean his new fans of course, what else?!
(Watch 31:50 - 34:10 of this Mazhar Imam intv) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZHt4gKNai9g
P.S. Btw. Ever wondered why Rajesh Khanna kept uttering the same, the very same, dialogue, in every filmy public speech he gave, in the last yrs of his life?? The greatest actor in the history of the profession, the world over, giving the same damn speech for yrs on end, till the end??? Remember that weird logo t-shirt he purposely wore with his disconfigured state? He was trying to fight, & for first time ever that anyone was trying to publicly do so, by trying to make people realize, something seriously wrong was being done to him, (outside the media propaganda cleverly deployed for yrs against him, thus dimming public affection & numbing people to his plight). You think an actor of his enormous caliber, despite his heavily 'induced' state, wouldn't have been conscious of his public displays??? They're said to be the most conscious, from what we hear.
Now carefully listen to that oft-heard dialogue, again, & contemplate-
"Na jaane aap mujhe samajhte hain kya,...main toh kuch bhi nahi. (Why are you threatened by me? I am not opposing anyone?) Pyar aap mujhe bhejte rahe, pyar vo mujhe milta raha, par us pyar ko main kabhi lauta nahi saka. (You keep sending me your 'potion of love' in various ways, that I am unable to out-trick & avoid) Itni bheed ka pyar....main rakhunga kahan. (How will I be able to contain & handle this much reaction (from the 'potion'?) Mere humdum, mere dost,...izzaten,...shauhraten,....ulfaten,...chahaten,....ye sab...rehte nahi yahan. (To my friends I say, respect, fame, adulation, fandom....they don't reside here any longer) Aaj jahan main hoon....kal koi aur tha. (The state I am in today, someone else was before me, my idol!)
Ye bhi ek daur hai....Vo bhi ek DAUR tha." (Self-explanatory. Remember Dilip's film 'Naya Daur'? ... The battle between human & machine!?)

I've been watching Kankar and DeD for the first time (well, I've watched bits & pieces of DeD with my mom before) UA and FI in their peaks were something else. It's good that FI limits her output because UA has overworked herself into bizarroland. I do think the old UA was a better dialogue and character writer between the two. The way her characters hit you viscerally is something else. While FI is a more effective storyteller and can handle broad, expansive themes better.
i said this in an earlier ask about how UA's writing hits more when one reads her novels. her sweeping descriptions of even the mundane actions get you completely engrossed in and TV can't capture those sentiments quite so well. however, her dialogues remain her strength in both mediums. UA's tv work isn't the same as it was more than a decade ago. back then she was still more interested in exploring the fragile connections between humans without submerging herself in the torrents of propaganda or using her writing to unabashedly insert her personal opinions and politics to make generalized statements. she is best when she keeps it simple.
on the contrary, FI works better on TV as her writing itself has a very screenplay quality to it so that translates well for the screen. an underrated FI drama is Mere Humdum Mere Dost which fully lost its chance to be more popular because Momina had the genius idea of airing it on Urdu1 and not HumTV. honestly it's sad how FI doesn't adapt more of her already written work for TV. the original work is also great but she has some beautiful gems from her digest writing days that can STILL reign supreme on the audiences mind. like..all this hype for JBHSSL which yes is a fine novel but had FI, instead of going for her last digest writing success, gone for her debut work Wo Jo Qarz Rakhte The Jaan Par and chose THAT to be her next big TV screen adaptation - oh bhayeeeeeee jo tabahiyan honi thi!! it has both the complex emotions of a desi child for their estranged family and a love story so damn HEARTBREAKING ke abhi bhi yaad aati hai toh rone ka dil karta hai. but oh well....kya hi keh sakte hain ab?

Update 18
Woh sochta tha ke donon ko kum se kum ek baar to milna chahiye aur kuch faisley leni chahiye, kuch batein karni bahot zaroori tha uss ke liye. Eisa Vijay ka sochna tha. Lekin kia Aisha eisa sochta tha? Kaun janey…..
Ghamgiin chahra liye woh ghar ke andar gaya aur Pooja ne kaha,”Arey wah bhai, aaj to tum mujhse pehley uth gaye! Kia baat hai?” Vijay ne ek jhooti muskaan mein kaha, “Nahin bus woh Tiger ko kholney gaya tha, aur kal ke liye I am sorry Pooja” Pooja hanstey huwe boli, “Koyi baat nahin bhai, tumko serve karney mein bahot peace milta hai mujhey, lekin utna ziada mat pina please. Achcha nahin lagta bhai. Okay?”
Shower leney ke baad jab Vijay kitchen mein gaya breakfast ke liye to usski maa ne kaha, “University jana hai ab …kia lejawoge bread mein Vijay?” Vijay ko jab University ka naam sunayi diya to dil mein ek ghabrahat si huwi, yeh sochkar ke Aisha saath nahin jaegi…. Phir uss ne socha ke shayad uss ne apne papa se baat ki ho aur uss ka papa hi ussko chorney ko jaega, aur wapas lene ko bhi jaega….apney dil mein Vijay yehi pray kar raha tha ke eisa hi ho, to kum se kum campus mein to woh Aish se baatein kar sakega…..
Aakhir woh tayaar huwa aur University janey ke liye ghar se nikla Tiger ko bandhney ke baad. Jab Tiger ko bandh raha tha to usski nazar sirf Aisha ki khirki par tha aur dekha ke Aisha ki khirki khuli huwi to thi magar parda khincha huwa tha…hawa se parda andar jaa raha tha, lekin koyi andar dikhayi nahin di….
Aur jab Vijay jaa raha tha, to Rhanveer lane mein se murkar pichey Aisha ke ghar ke taraf baar baar dekh raha tha, ke kahin Aisha na nikley jaaney ke liye… lekin eisa kuch bhi nahin huwa aur woh udaas chala gaya….
Raastey mein chaltey waqt ussko ajeeb sa lag raha tha kyunke woh kabhi bhi akela to nahin jata tha nah… aur raastey mein log bhi ussko dekh raha tha kyunke saarey mohaley mein yeh maloom ho gaya tha ke Aisha aur Vijay ki separation ho gayi hai….. sab log jo unn donon ko pyar bhari nazron se dekha kartey the ab udaasi ke saath dekhtey the, aur jo log buri nazar se dekhtey the ab khushi ki nazar se dekhney lage…. Jeise ke woh gunde log jiss ne Aisha ko chera tha, weh to bahot khush the ke ab Vijay akela hai…unn ki nazron mein to Aisha ek female object hai, aur woh log to sirf lust ki nazar se donon ko dekhtey the aur sochtey the ke inn donon ke beech sirf affair tha, yeh to nahin jaantey the ke donon sach much kitna pyar kartey the…. Aur weise logon ko dil ke dard ke baarey mein kuch bhi pata na tha….. woh log Aisha se sirf sex ki umeed rakhtey the aur weh log ab yeh sochtey the ke ab jo Vijay alag ho gaya hai to unn logon ko Aisha sex ke liye haasil hoga…. Unn logon ne taanaa mara Vijay par jab Vijay bus stop par khara tha bus ke liye… lekin Vijay chup raha aur ek taraf dekhta raha….. jab tak bus bahin aya weh log tarah tarah ki batein suna rahey the Vijay ko galiyan ke saath…Aisha ka naam bhi le rahe the, lekin phir bhi Vijay apna knoon pita raha aur kuch bhi nahin kaha aur bus aya to chala bhi gaya…
Jab University ponhcha to aur bhi bahot dukh huwa Vijay ko….. har koyi uss se poochta ke Aisha kahan hai, kyun woh nahin ayi…. Woh jawab dete dete thak gaya, roya bhi doston ko apna haal sunatey sunatey…. Course ko follow nahin kar pata tha, sirf Aisha ki yadein satati thi… woh bahot bechain tha, gham ke andherey mein ghira huwa tha…. Break mein campus mein har woh jagah jahan woh Aisha ke saath baithta tha, Vijay ki nazron ko kaatta tha…. Uss ko sirf Aisha dikhayi de rahi thi har ladki mein…. Charon taraf campus mein Aisha ki yadein bassi huwi thi…peyr ke nichey, bench par, cafe mein, gym mein, har jagah sirf Aisha bassi hui tha….aur Vijay ko jeise chakkar sa aya aur, enkhon ke saamney andhera sa chaya, aur woh girr para……
Doston ne ussko uthaya aur ek peyr ke nichey araam karney ke liye letaya, aur paani chirkey usske chehrey par……. jab uss ko hosh aya to woh roney laga aur kaha ke woh ab course nahin follow kar paega……
Ussne kaha ke woh wapas ghar ja raha hai aur wahan se chal para….. ghar kahan gaya woh ek bar mein gaya aur pina shuru kiya, thora beer, thora rum piya aur bus lekar wapas mohaley mein ponhcha…. Ghar janey se pehley woh jewelry dukaan ke paas ek restaurant tha, wahan gaya aur pina chaalu rakha…… woh pita gaya, pita gaya…. Sham hogaya, phir raat honey ko ayi, aur tab tak to Vijay bilkool nashey mein dhuth tha….. Raat ko 8 bajey wahan se nikla aur larkharatey huwe ghar ponhcha……
Ghar mein maa, baap se kaha , “Aaj ke baad mera university jana bandh! Bahot parhaayi karli main ne, ab ghunda gardi karunga, piyunga aur jiyunga…..” usske maa, baap ko usske haalat ka pata tha to unhon ne uss ko kuch nahin kaha, Pooja to ro rahi thi usska haal dekh kar… Vijay ne pooja ke kandhon par haath rakh kar hanstey huwe bilkool nashey ki haalat mein kaha, “Ari Pooja, tu kyun ro rahi hai ri? Tujhey kaun sa gham hai? Hmm? Tera kaun alag huwa hai tum se re? hey Pooja, kabhi kissi se pyar mat karna hein? Suna nah? Kabhi bhi pyar mat karna, bahot buri cheez hai yeh pyar..dekho, mujhko dekho, sharabi bana diya saala iss pyar ne..hahahahaha!!” Pooja aur zor zor se roney lagi…..
Vijay aguey barha, larkharatey huwe…deewaar ko thamtey huwe, kabhi ek peir idhar parta to kabhi ek peir udhar, kuch pata nahin tha ke woh keise chal raha hai….. woh baahar gaya Tiger ke ghar ke paas, aur zor se kaha, “Arey Tiger mere yaar, mera dost, wafadaar dost, I am sorry..(uss ka zubaan bhi larkhara raha tha, bilkool saaf nahin bol raha tha) I am sorry tujhey kholney mein der ki main ne yaar, chal yaar, aja, kholta hoon tujhey…jaa….” Kuttey ko khol diya, Tiger ne poonch hilaya khushi ke maarey, zor se chalang lagaya, apni do aguey wala paon Vijay ke kandhey tak ponchaya, aur Vijay ki gaalon ko lick kiya aur daudtey chala gaya…Vijay kuch der khara raha, aur Aisha ke khirki ki taraf dekhta raha…. Aur wahin deewaar par peeth laga kar khara huwa yeh gana zor zor se ganaa shuru kiya:
Koyi humdum na raha, koyi sahara na raha
hum kissike na rahe koyi hamara na rahaa
koyi humdum na raha koyi sahara ha raha
Shaam tanhayi ki hai, ayegi manzil keise…
Shaam tanhayi ki hai, ayegi manzil keise
Jo mujhe raah dikhaye, wohi taara na rahaa
Koyi humdaun na rahaa, koyi sahara na raha…
(Beech mein ruka roya, naak se behtey paani ko poncha,
Phir gaaney ko continue kiya Aisha ko sunatey huwe….)
Ey nazaaro na hasso, mil na sakunga tumse
Ey nazaaro na hasso, mil na sakunga tumse
Woh mere ho na sake, main bhi tumhara na raha(yahan bhi khub roya)
Koyi humdum na rahaa, koyi sahara na rahaa
Kia batawoon main kahan, yunhi chala jataa hoon
Kia batawoon main kahan, yunhi chala jataa hoon
Jo mujhe phir se bulale, woh ishara na raha (yahan bhi roya)
koyi humdam na rahaa, koyi sahara na rahaa
hum kissi ke na rahe, koyi hamara na raha.
