Women's Human Rights in India: A Social and Legal Analysis
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/15879e6b5a4bca6eafa834734c19c6a8/f7979549da3916e4-1c/s540x810/b51f1d6db0022eccb0bdcdb393f32e2ed49a69ee.jpg)
The human rights of women in India still face all these issues, despite the recent successes the country has achieved. The everyday problems of women continue to range from issues of safety and security to struggles for equality in the workplace.
Social Barriers and Traditional Mindsets
Old ways of thinking continue to affect how society treats women. Many families still prefer sons over daughters, leading to unequal treatment from birth. This mindset shows up in education, where some families choose to educate boys while keeping girls at home. Together Thrive works with communities to change these deep-rooted beliefs.
Girls are often compelled to marry early and drop their education or careers. This inhibits their growth and prevents them from realizing their full potential. The laws regarding women have been made stronger, but changing the minds of people is a slow process.
Safety and violence against women
Women's safety is a critical concern in urban and rural settings. Street harassment, domestic violence, and harassment at the workplace prevent women from moving freely without fear. The research conducted by Together Thrive indicates that a large number of women do not feel safe in public transport or walking alone during the day.
The human rights of women in India include the right to live safely, but many women face violence at home. Despite laws protecting women from abuse at home, many women hide behind shame and social pressure which silence them when asking for help.
Workplace Issues
Working women face their own set of problems. Many deal with lower pay than men for the same work, fewer promotion chances, and harassment. Together Thrive helps companies create better workplaces where women can grow in their careers without facing discrimination.
Some offices still don't have basic facilities for women or proper systems to handle harassment complaints. The laws protecting women at work exist, but many companies need to do more to follow them properly.
Healthcare Access and Rights
Women's health needs often take a back seat in many families. Poor access to healthcare, especially in rural areas, affects women's wellbeing. Pregnant women sometimes don't get proper care, and many women feel shy talking about their health problems.
Together Thrive supports programs that help women understand their health rights and access better medical care. The human rights of women in India must include good healthcare, but many still struggle to get basic treatment.

Some things which happened yesterday after or during the time of the candle march that was organised in the whole state.
Riots were orchestrated by mobs in front of RG Kar Hospital and in many other places.
A woman named Priyanka Hansda, a student at Burdwan University. She took part in one of the 'Claim the Night' rallies but was met with another tragedy. She was murdered, which can't be described. May we get justice for her too.
Men tried to climb over the walls of the girls' hostel. Another girl was molested there. Presumably, the hostel was of RG Kar too.
RG Kar was destroyed again to tamper with evidence.
Jadavpur University students were beaten up by West Bengal police because they raised voices against the injustice.

One of the most horrifying things is probably that some women are supporting men in wreaking havoc so that all evidence can be tampered with.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/b1ed48704b58952d210c5a0470513e7e/47f16365d4b6539a-5f/s250x250_c1/71bacfb40b683bac18d894a28712fa46642e1229.jpg)
(sorry for the bad quality)
The news is circulating and I am not sure how true is that, which is very disturbing. Apparently, the girlfriend of one of the rapists helped them to commit the murder.
Many have speculated that this is part of something bigger which makes sense because of how government is trying to hide the whole incident.

Sujata Setia, "A Thousand Cuts," 2024,
For centuries in southeast Asia, lingchi was employed as a particularly brutal form of torture in which a knife was used to methodically remove parts of the body over long periods.
Translated as “death by a thousand cuts,” the ancient practice provides the metaphorical groundwork for London-based Indian artist.
For the past two years, Setia has collaborated with SHEWISE, a charity that empowers marginalized women to overcome trauma and cultivate lives free from oppression and violence.
Through this connection, she spent two years photographing survivors of abuse in South Asian communities across the U.K. “A Thousand Cuts is an effort to understand abuse from many different frames of reference,” the artist says in a statement.

no way did i see someone say in the tbes tag "forcing trans rep where it doesnt belong" a..... as if trans biracial japanese people dont exist and have always existed??? japan isnt a country made entirely of cis people what the fuck are you talking about. queer people and non-ciss-ness has been a cornerstone in japans cultural history since forever. you literally would not have kabuki theatre without queer people or at the very least non-cis and non-straight people. queeness is embedded in the samurai way of life (historically, for better or worse). and what about all the adult wakashu? who voluntarily never graduated into adult man cishood because they wanted to keep their queerness/mlm relationships/non-cis-man presentation intact? you cant label the trans identity as a Whites/Westerners Only thing and then swear by the strict binary idea of cisness...which is an actual hegemonic christian thing made to divide and subjugate dfab and dmab people???? youre queerphobic AND racist
#my t#terfs and radfems are fucking mindboggling#cis poc women exist at the same time as queer and trans poc women and men and gnc ppl and agender/nb ppl this is a hard fact#another hard fact: transness or at least non-cis-ness is an idea thats older than the entire history of cis womanhood/manhood#the gender binary is a relatively RECENT IDEA#''non-cis-ness/non-straightness is a white idea only western ppl are non-gendered!!'' say that to any 2spirit person ever i fucking dare yo#or any queer person ever in the entire history of india#fuck off with your racialized terf bullshit you insidious piece of shit#imo the ONLY reason binary gender (and sex) is even mentioned in the bible is so that eve could be deemed as lesser than adam#for some arbitrary fuckin reason#and yall bought right into it! great. good work everyone#we have lived together amongst eachother since literally the invention of the first stone tool and u can fuckin bet early humans#didnt have a clue about cis manhood and cis womanhood & anyone who says so is projecting hard and intellectually dishonest

Toilet: A luxury For Some
That Toilet is a basic need is something we do not realize since all our homes have not one, but many toilets. But, the importance of toilets was brought home to me when I started Helper4U. When we rented out our first office space, we were on a shoestring budget, and thus had a space constraint. To tide over this, we encouraged girls among our staff to work from home if possible. But, we were amazed to find that they all preferred working from the office rather than from home, even if it meant they could earn more and could also work flexi-time. This was quite surprising because as working women most of us would jump at the opportunity to work flexi-time, not travel, spend more time at home, and still earn more.
Having a Toilet: A luxury for some
On doing some simple research it turned out that the simple reason for this was the absence of a toilet at their homes. All these girls were from slums nearby. They had to use a communal toilet, which was always very dirty, and had no water supply most of the time. Even if all else was well, they had to wait in a queue to use it. That was the first time we realized the impact a toilet can have on people’s lives. Hence we say: Toilet Ek Jaroorat (Toilet is a basic need)
For millions of women, therefore, having a toilet means becoming free: A toilet can be Freedom For Her from so many things. Even for men from slums, it is a luxury. Many drivers come early to work so that they can use the cleaner, and more accessible toilets in the buildings of their employers. This is in stark contrast to the dirty ones in their slums. We, the more blessed ones (with at least one toilet at home) cannot even imagine how not having a toilet can impact the whole life of people, right from what they eat, when they eat, and how they ”go”.
This is not the situation in India alone. Globally, millions still suffer the fear and indignity of relieving themselves in the open or in unsafe or unhygienic conditions — a situation that is most dangerous for girls and women. For more than 1.1 billion women and girls globally, a lack of toilets results in an increased risk of poor health, limited education, harassment, and even attack. WaterAid’s third annual report reveals that women and girls bear the brunt of the Global Sanitation Crisis. Not having access to a toilet puts girls at risk of harassment and attack when finding somewhere to relieve themselves or manage menstruation. Lack of a decent toilet at schools is also a reason for many girls to miss or drop out of school.
How important toilets are for girls can be also gauged from the happy faces of these females posing next to a toilet. Would any of us ever think of posing next to a toilet, leave alone smiling away too?
Some interesting facts about toilets
India tops the list for the longest line for the toilet. While there has been immense progress in improving access to sanitation through the Swachh Bharat (Clean India) Mission, there are still more than 355 million women and girls in India waiting for access to basic sanitation. If they would make a line, it would stretch around the earth more than four times.
Around 289,000 children under five die every year from diarrhea related diseases caused by poor water and sanitation. That’s almost 800 children a day, or one child every two minutes.
Between 2000 and 2015, people defecating in the open dropped from 1.2 billion globally. (20% of the global population) to 892 million (12%). Still enough waste is produced in the open to fill seven bathtubs every second.
This World Toilet Day, on November 19, governments are pledging to do their bit. But, how can we homeowners support this basic human right?
One simple suggestion for all homeowners
Allow your domestic Helpers to use your toilets if they need to go. Rather than send them to the road or bushes nearby, allow them to use your toilets. After all, once flushed, the waste goes through the same process, irrespective of who generated it. Similarly, if someone defecates in the open. And in many of our homes, they are the ones cleaning it. And who knows, they may already be using it in your absence. So, allow them to use it, and feel the joy of giving.
We are all prone to diseases, again, irrespective of who generated it, and where. So prevent it the most you can. A simple gesture at your end will help keep the surroundings in our cities clean.
Allow Helpers to Use Your Toilet. Discourage the use of open spaces that are open defecation.
Remember: Having a toilet is a human rights issue. Everyone has a right to health and dignity. Let us pledge to contribute to it the best we can.

“,,, Patriarchy and caste hierarchy, a structure of authority that has existed for more than 2,000 years, have had a magnified effect on Dalit women.
Dalit women - as well as those from less privileged Shudra families - were forced by landlords into wet nursing and other forms of domestic labour and were vulnerable to sexual assault by men from more privileged castes.
“They turned us into a resource and made use of anything that our bodies could provide, even our milk,” Yellamma said.
Women could not refuse to obey, knowing they risked physical, sexual, verbal and psychological abuse and retribution against their families if they did.
Time and again, those who resist caste oppression have faced brutal consequences. In 2006, after a family resisted having their land taken by members of a more dominant caste, a Dalit mother, her daughter and two sons were paraded naked, raped and murdered in the village of Khairlanji, Maharashtra. Last August, a nine-year-old Dalit boy died after his “upper-caste” schoolteacher allegedly beat him for drinking from the teachers’ earthen pot. ,,,”

Let's talk about what happened in the week of fucking Indian Independence Day.
I will share the extreme details only if you want me to because they are too gruesome.
"A case was registered on 11th of August when the accused allegedly posted the video of the actual on an online platform." - the 11-yo girl was raped in Ballia, UP.
On the 12th of August, a 3.5-yo nursery student was raped by the school bus driver in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand.
Priyanka Hansda, a 25-yo Adivasi girl, from Bardhaman, WB, was raped (speculated) and murdered between 12th-14th August. She went missing on 12th and her body was found on 14th.
Ankita Barui, a student of Bardhaman University, was returning home after taking part in the 'Claim the Night' March for the late Dr. Moumita. Ankita was raped and brutally murdered on her way home.
In Bihar's Muzaffarpur, a 9th grade student was gang-raped and murdered. The details, too horrendous.
Yesterday, a 7-yo little girl was raped at Nabinchandra Das Road. She used to read in class 1. Her rapist is 'Gourango Bose'. He is now scott-free, even though he was accused and guilty.
Yesterday, two female students from Heritage Law College were molested by an employee of the Geological Survey of India at Allen Park. Police has nabbed the man and he is currently in jail.
Yesterday, a nurse was brutally murdered and raped in Uttarakhand. She was missing from 30th July and after a week, her body was found in an empty plot.
Apart from all these horrific cases in just one week, there are ongoing mob attacks on NRS, Jadavpur, RG Kar and various other student groups.
The men saying 'Not All Men', kindly shut the fuck up. This is not about you. You all will always benefit from the patriarchal society. Unless you know the fear of women, shut the fuck up.
Also this woman. Does she think paying 10L will be a solution. Fuck off CM.
