I thought it was fun....
I love a doublet, I love a tall boot, I love a neck drape and an exposed chemise puff. I love a monochrome, and I love a swoopy scarf, and I love a scratchy bird. Most of all, I love the scrawled oddly positioned hand one is willing to accept when one no longer wants to draw a hand.
Unrelated; going away for a little while. I'll be back.

Quick tip to anyone who is going through the horrors of learning to draw human bodies.
Don't look at the thousands of overly complicated anatomy tutorials, at least not to begin with.
Look instead to urban sketchers. Trust me on this. Urban sketchers have to get those shapes and proportions down on paper quickly and correctly.
Build shape memory before you start to look at where that one muscle goes when the arm is in that one specific position. Come back to that later.
Oh and I hate to say it but keep those urban sketcher tricks in the back of your mind and then draw figure studies every single day. It sucks at first but three of those every day for a week or two and you'll be able to draw human bodies. Pinky promise.
#While i was learning I came across a video by Sketching Scottie on TY totally by accident#and it COMPLETELY rewired my brain and the way i think when i draw people#urban sketchers rely heavily on a basic dot grid for proportions that works incredibly well#and they are very good at looking at the shape of the person as a whole instead of individual parts#as well as utilising the negative space of whatever pose they're drawing#it's a very good way to approach the human body without having to worry about breaking it up into all its strange components#and remember that figure studies are ALWAYS quantity over quality#they don't have to be good they just have to be done

do you ever see someone draw an ankle, or a nose, or some fragment of the human body that makes you realize they are in love
#in love with someone. in love with humanity. in love with life#i think there is a beauty and delicacy in drawing the knobby curvy shape of the human existence#i just stared at a piece where the ankles and knees were shaped in such a way where i could only feel this person has studied so deeply#and to love the human body is to study and observe it over and over#i am just feeling very emotional about anatomy and heart and skin recently don't mind me#thello babbles

This is maybe an odd thing to put on a good news/reasons for hope blog, but I've also had people tell me that they find this info really, genuinely comforting, so I'm putting it up. Also, further understanding could do a ton to advance medicine, esp. re: allergies, autoimmune diseases, and depression. You can read more about this at the link.
"More than half of your body is not human, say scientists.
Human cells make up only 43% of the body's total cell count. The rest are microscopic [co-contributors].
Understanding this hidden half of ourselves - our microbiome - is rapidly transforming understanding of diseases from allergy to Parkinson's.
The field is even asking questions of what it means to be "human" and is leading to new innovative treatments as a result.
"They are essential to your health," says Prof Ruth Ley, the director of the department of microbiome science at the Max Planck Institute, "your body isn't just you."
No matter how well you wash, nearly every nook and cranny of your body is covered in microscopic creatures.
This includes bacteria, viruses, fungi and archaea (organisms originally misclassified as bacteria). The greatest concentration of this microscopic life is in the dark murky depths of our oxygen-deprived bowels.
Prof Rob Knight, from University of California San Diego, told the BBC: "You're more microbe than you are human."
Originally it was thought our cells were outnumbered 10 to one.
"That's been refined much closer to one-to-one, so the current estimate is you're about 43% human if you're counting up all the cells," he says.
But genetically we're even more outgunned.
The human genome - the full set of genetic instructions for a human being - is made up of 20,000 instructions called genes.
But add all the genes in our microbiome together and the figure comes out between two and 20 million microbial genes.
Prof Sarkis Mazmanian, a microbiologist from Caltech, argues: "We don't have just one genome, the genes of our microbiome present essentially a second genome which augment the activity of our own.
"What makes us human is, in my opinion, the combination of our own DNA, plus the DNA of our gut microbes."
It would be naive to think we carry around so much microbial material without it interacting or having any effect on our bodies at all.
Science is rapidly uncovering the role the microbiome plays in digestion, regulating the immune system, protecting against disease and manufacturing vital vitamins.
Prof Knight said: "We're finding ways that these tiny creatures totally transform our health in ways we never imagined until recently."
It is a new way of thinking about the microbial world. To date, our relationship with microbes has largely been one of warfare.

inspired by these memes about next year (im still on 2024 help) i want to show this AU i have been thinking since month ago in the sidelines
#i have been thinking about aus for so long but never talk about them#bc idk if it has been done before or something im not really connected with the fandom and what they do#and i dont want to step into anyone's boundaries or something by accident#i have been putting it off bc i need to study human anatomy to build their body since i want to think about their functions#i need to think about what each piercing would do. the ones in the ears are kind of easy to think about their function but#i can't think about what the snake bite could do since im not sure they eat. it could have an attack function but that#would mean he needs to be near someone to bite and attack?? but that sounds like last resource it's not practical#no. being pretty it's not an excuse i want those to do a job. i will think of something A WAIT ok got it i have an idea that's silly#idk why writting the tags clears my mind this is magic#ok goodbye i have to do things i will come back#silly squeaking time#this is messy im using my last seconds of confidence to post this until i feel fear again aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa#messy explanation messy sketch be die like uhhh we die like uhhh ehehehe im not saying that asdhshjggfs

Having a good art class for the first time in my life is such an insane feeling, all the other classes were just my teachers being incredibly mean, not actually teaching anything and making us do nonsensical assignments and now I have a teacher that actually takes note of the kind of art I’m into and gives me assignments based on things I enjoy and can improve? I made an oil painting of my current blorbo because this way I’d be drawing something I like and still trying a new medium and learning things? My first homework was making concept designs for my OC? My next assignment will be making a scrapbook-esque research about Julia Lepetit from drawfee? Is this even real
#lemon man talks#Little rant but I’m just so incredibly happy to be able to have this experience#Even if it’s just for 3 months#Our class is small so we each get individual attention and personalized assignments based on our skills and strengths#Since I’m a cartoonist and mostly draw people my teacher is focusing on that for me#My theme for this term is gonna be humans basically#I need to study body language and poses and behavior to translate into my art and characters#And well let’s just say#I’m really enjoying it#Despite being awfully tired and scared I won’t have the time to finish everything i want to do im having fun#I might have gone overboard on my sketch for the Julia pages but I’ll work on it during my free periods in between classes to do as much as#Possible too#It’s gonna be two pages#One about Julia/how she inspires my art#And one about the Eugene oil painting I did#Well kinda#I didn’t finish it
