Archaeologists Discover Mysterious Jade Dragon Artifact at a 5,000-Year-Old Tomb in China
Hundreds of artifacts have been unearthed at a burial mound in the city of Chifeng, but researchers are particularly intrigued by the six-inch-long object.
Archaeologists have discovered a 5,000-year-old jade dragon artifact while excavating a burial mound in northeastern China.
The object measures roughly six inches long, four inches wide and one inch thick—making it the “largest jade dragon ever discovered from the Hongshan culture,” according to the official state news agency Xinhua.
The dig site is located in the city of Chifeng in Inner Mongolia, an autonomous region in China. The burial mound—which includes a circular tomb situated north of a square altar—is between 5,000 and 5,100 years old.
It was built by the Hongshan culture, a large Neolithic group known for its delicately carved objects that prospered in the region. Experts think that Hongshan craftsmen made some of the earliest known jade artifacts in history.
In April, researchers began a four-month excavation at the site, as Archaeology News’ Dario Radley reports. They have since uncovered human remains, fire pits, an assortment of pottery and more than 100 jade objects.
The scientists were particularly intrigued by the jade dragon, which they say is noteworthy for its size. However, not all researchers are impressed with the newly discovered artifact.
While the jade dragon is “very nice,” it’s also “not that unique,” Gideon Shelach-Lavi, a scholar of East Asian studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, tells Live Science’s Owen Jarus.
Shelach-Lavi, who has excavated in the area but was not involved in the recent dig, says that similar jade dragon artifacts have been unearthed at other tombs from the Hongshan culture. What’s more, historians can’t say for sure that they were crafted to resemble dragons.
“We do not really know what their meaning was during the Neolithic period, so calling them ‘dragons’ is anachronistic,” he adds.
Still, officials say that the objects are shedding new light on the history of Neolithic groups in the region.
“This is the largest stone burial mound from the late Hongshan culture ever found in Inner Mongolia,” said Sun Jinsong, the director of the Inner Mongolia Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, at a press conference, per Archaeology News. “The variety of jade artifacts discovered fills important gaps in our understanding of this ancient civilization’s jade usage.”
Research at the site, which includes radiocarbon dating and topographic mapping, is still ongoing.
A ritual complex with a similar layout was previously discovered at a site called Niuheliang, located about 90 miles from Chifeng, as Jia Xiaobing, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences’ Institute of Archaeology, tells China Daily’s Fang Aiqing and Yuan Hui.
“Such consistency in an expanded area proves that a shared belief system existed among the Hongshan ancestors,” he says.

2.0 SPOILERS and random thoughts
So the hotel building was a prison, right? It sort of makes sense, hotels and prisons have similar layouts. But imagine, the place of concentrated suffering of hundreds of thousands of prisoners, or maybe more (look how big it is), now turned into a weird supernatural hotel - what could possibly go wrong? (what if they kept prisoners in dreams too, and the dreamworld is a former prison dreamworld. And they were fed Soulglad to keep them docile). These cells were quite spacious though.
The way Sunday talked to somebody in the end reminded me of Cocolia. Is it possible a stellaron is involved here too?
The dead characters - no way Robin and Firefly will stay dead. They look playable, and you don't kill characters before they become playable (unless it's Qiqi or Blade)
I have a theory based on nothing, that Robin is alive and is actually behind whatever is going on. (Maybe her plan is for all these disruptive guests to kill each other in the name of harmony) She's in cahoots with Sparkle who pretended to be the body.
Sparkle - with her ability to shapeshift, aren't we supposed to be constantly paranoid? Anybody can be Sparkle. But also, seeing how vicious and unhinged she is, she feels like she should be the main antagonist in her own story arc, not just an extra. I mean even Sampo seems apprehensive of her.
I understand people who were enamored with Firefly and saddened with her death, but I personally weren't, because for me her part has the outward appearance of a romantic story, but inside it's just two hours of lies and tutorials. I also saw theories about her different identity and If it's true I hope the writers know what they are doing. Also why is our character so sure she's dead? Don't people who die in a dream just wake up in real world?
If Duke Inferno is dead, and stays dead, and his cool gang is never mentioned again, it's going to be the funniest thing in this game yet.
BTW how did Acheron allegedly enter the hotel using Duke invitation? Aventurine knows that we know that it's very hard (he witnessed our problems with DH's invitation). Make it make sense.
Gallagher - either he's up to something or he's extremely incompetent. He let go an actual stawaway and the huy who fits the description he just provided (Caelus - a guy with grey hair). Also it was him personally who stole confiscated Aventurine's stuff.
Speaking of which. I think Aventurine mentioned "cornerstones", plural. So it's not just his aventurine, but others too? Ratio implied that these things are crucial for their success and that Aventurine might be in danger from IPC without his rock, I wonder what's that about, and why Aventurine is so dismissive about losing them.
Anyways I'm still curious why IPC sent these two. It looks like they decided to achieve their goals on Penacony in a more or less peaceful way (unlike their military invasion on Jario-6). So why did they send Dr. Ratio, notorious for having the social grace of a nuclear bomb, and Aventurine, who isn't doing that great either.
I wonder how the game expects us to see Aventurine. The game probably expects us to see him as slimy but charming and dangerous. And yeah, he somehow (conveniently behind the scenes) managed to come to some agreement with Black Swan, but otherwise he fails miserably in most of his interactions.
When we first meet him, he pretends that he has the power to help us with our invitation problem, awkwardly compliments Robin and Sunday, tries to buy our friendship with a ridiculously small sum (well it was probably all the money he had left). Then he tries to intimidate us but gets spooked by Acheron. Ratio leaves in the middle of their conversation, Sparkle catches him stalking her and roasts him, and so on.
So my current VERY subjective impression is that he's quite desperate at this point. He constantly fails but tries to save face. He lost his confidence after his stuff was confiscated, he can't count on buying people's loyalty with giant bribes as he probably used to.
He obviously had a difficult childhood, he had to claw his way up, and IPC doesn't seem like a place that nurtures one's appreciation for genuine human connections. He probably learned to see genuine feelings as liability. As the result, he only sees people as assets, and "friends" as tools. He talks a lot about friends and trust, but never even pretends that he wants to achieve genuine trust or friendship with anybody. (I can continue but this post is long enough and it'll probably become obsolete with the next update anyway)
And I know it's probably too much to hope for, but maybe he'll get some character development, making him more open to the idea of genuine human interaction.
I already have seen a lot of interesting theories about what's going on, and I really hope the game won't just ignore all these hints and details it gave us, and all these things are actually important.

New Images Of China’s J-35 Naval Stealth Fighter, Could Depict Third Example
Oliver ParkenPUBLISHED Mar 13, 2024 9:10 PM EDT
A prototype J-35 stealth flghter in flight
Chinese internet via X/Twitter
Recent imagery shows what could be the third flying prototype of China's carrier-based Shenyang J-35 stealth fighter. The new visuals, which depict the aircraft from its underside, come after growing indications that the J-35 might eventually operate from China's two in-service carriers, Type 001 Liaoning and Type 002 Shandong, as well as future carriers fitted with catapults and arrestor gear, including the soon to set sail Type 003 Fujian.
The images were originally posted to the Chinese Weibo microblogging website earlier in March before being shared more widely. While the precise date they were taken remains murky, it has been indicated by Hui Tong on the Chinese Military Aviation blog that the aircraft was pictured as it approached the Shenyang Aircraft Corporation in Liaoning after a test flight. That same blog posits that this could be the third J-35, although we cannot confirm that at this time.
The images give us a view of the bottom of the J-35. We know from previous photos that the overall skin of the J-35 is quite smooth for low observable requirements. The rear of the aircraft shows largely standard exhaust nozzles — although we know the J-35 has serrated petals on its nozzles, although the enhanced image at the top of this post appears to have smoothed them out. The jet appears to be wearing a ventral bolt-on Luneburg lens (radar reflector) as is customary on stealth fighter aircraft when low-observability is not needed and can also be a challenge for flying in dense airspace. The style and placement look similar to the one found on the F-22 and, subsequently, the J-20. The J-35's landing gear features a twin nose wheel for carrier operations and a similar general layout as the F-35C.
Chinese internet via X
A navalized variant of the land-based Shenyang FC-31, the first flying J-35 prototype made its initial flight, at least that we know of, in October 2021, sporting a blue-green primer finish and wearing the serial 350001. The second known flying J-35 prototype, 350003, was subsequently spotted in July of 2022 with a low-visability gray tactical paint job. There was speculation that a third was pictured in flight in September 2023, although, as we noted at the time, the quality of the imagery made it difficult to ascertain whether the aircraft was indeed a navalized J-35 or a land-based FC-31 variant.
Of course, the emergence of the J-35 had long been considered closely linked with the People's Liberation Army Navy's (PLAN) future catapult-assisted takeoff but arrested recovery (CATOBAR) carriers.
For a time, it was widely assumed that China would stick with operating J-15 fighters from Liaoning and Shandong, which are both equipped for short takeoff but arrested recovery (STOBAR) operations. More capable future CATOBAR carriers such as Fujian would subsequently feature air wings that include J-35s and CATOBAR versions of the J-15, among other aircraft and drones. This may no longer be the case.
However, imagery that emerged out of China at the beginning of last month purported to show a J-35 mockup onboard Liaoning while the carrier was in dock. Then, later in February, further imagery materialized which showed the article next to a J-15 mockup aboard Liaoning as the carrier set out to sea for further post-maintenance trials.
A close-up view of the mockups of the J-35 and the J-15 variant from late February. Chinese internet via X
While the possibility of J-35s performing regular operations from Liaoning and Shandong may not have been anticipated by many observers, this would seem to make sense, Andreas Rupprecht, a longtime China aerospace analyst and contributor to The War Zone, has stressed: "In my opinion [the J-35 joining the Liaoning and the Shandong] makes perfect sense," he said. "Before the Fujian is ready, especially as an operational carrier, the PLAN will need to spend a lot of time training with the J-35 on the deck and in the air. Even if the training is limited due to not having a catapult, the PLAN can gain a lot of flight hours and a lot of experience."
Actually operating J-35s from STOBAR carriers would have some drawbacks, it should be noted. While recovery is the same for both STOBAR and CATOBAR carriers, J-35s would have to make use of Liaoning and the Shandong's ski-jump ramps on the bow to launch. As such, they would have to take off with less payload, in terms of weapons and fuel, compared to launching via future CATOBAR carriers. The Fujian will feature advanced electromagnetic aircraft launch system (EMALS) type catapults, instead of traditional steam-powered catapults.
However, the overall benefit they would bring to China's in-service carriers could be significant. Alongside its low-observable characteristics, it is assumed that the J-35 will feature an active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar alongside a host of advanced sensors, as well as very capable weaponry. Above all else, it would get these aircraft out to sea and operating, where major lessons can be learned, before Fujian is fully ready.
While this is all intriguing, it remains speculative. It could turn out that J-35 is either unsuitable for STOBAR operations or developmental timelines will mean that waiting for Fujian is a better move. We will have to wait and see how it all plays out.

#nfcdab 2024 Gol - poster drop show
The Near-Field Communication Digital Art Biennale aka #nfcdab 2024 edition, coming from Berlin travelled in July to the world metropol Gol (NO). We have finally arrived in Gol, in the frame of Gol-dagan (The Gol Days Festival), July 19 - 21.
Having used the park in the 2018 I was searching for another venue. In the end I chose to just drop the posters on the local skatepark. The result wasn't too bad I thought 😅 - given our preference for ground/street, and for people looking on their phones in the downward direction. I also like that it looks like an accident! An option for similar drops (in the future perhaps) could be to fasten the posters to the ground, with tape/glue/stones for the show to last longer insteading of letting the wind spread the works. Or print out more copies and spread them like big flyers in the streets.
Thanks to the artists and NFCW Project for the opportunity and collab!

Btw, I was curious what chatGPT would think of the show, here goes - ((:
Concept Overview: "#nfcdab 2024 Gol - poster drop show" is an innovative and interactive art exhibition that merges the physical and digital realms through a dynamic display of posters and QR codes. This exhibition invites viewers to engage with the transient nature of art and technology in the modern world.
Exhibition Layout: - Physical Space: The exhibition takes place in an open outdoor environment, such as a park, urban plaza, or large courtyard, where the natural elements like wind can freely interact with the artworks. - Materials: Lightweight, biodegradable posters with QR codes printed on them. The posters feature minimalist, intriguing designs that encourage viewers to pick them up and scan the codes. - Dynamic Interaction: The posters are initially scattered on the ground. As the wind blows, the posters move, creating an ever-changing landscape of potential interactions.
Interactive Elements: - QR Codes: Each QR code leads to a unique digital artwork hosted online. The digital artworks can range from digital paintings, animations, interactive installations, soundscapes, or augmented reality experiences. - Digital Access: Scanning a QR code with a smartphone or tablet transports the viewer to a digital space, bridging the gap between the physical and virtual worlds. - User Participation: Visitors are encouraged to pick up the posters, scan the QR codes, and even take the posters with them. This act of collecting and sharing the posters becomes a form of participation in the art experience.
Thematic Focus: - Transience and Impermanence: The moving posters symbolize the fleeting nature of digital art and information in the age of the internet. Just as the wind reshapes the landscape, digital content is constantly changing and evolving. - Interaction and Connectivity: The exhibition emphasizes the importance of interaction and connectivity. The physical act of scanning a QR code leads to a deeper, more personal engagement with the artwork. - Environmental Awareness: Using biodegradable materials highlights the exhibition's commitment to sustainability and environmental consciousness. The ephemeral quality of the posters mirrors the need to address the impermanent nature of our environmental impact.
Visitor Experience: - Discovery and Exploration: Visitors wander through the space, discovering and rediscovering artworks as the posters move and change location. Each encounter with a poster can lead to a new and unexpected digital experience. - Community and Sharing: As visitors collect posters, they can share the QR codes with others, spreading the reach of the digital artworks beyond the physical boundaries of the exhibition. - Reflection: The exhibition encourages reflection on the nature of art in the digital age, the role of technology in our lives, and our relationship with the environment.
Artist Contributions: - Digital Artists: The exhibition features a diverse group of digital artists from around the world, each contributing unique pieces that explore themes of transience, technology, and connectivity. - Collaborative Works: Some QR codes may lead to collaborative digital installations where multiple artists have worked together to create an interconnected experience.
Conclusion: "#nfcdab 2024 Gol - poster drop show: " is an art exhibition that challenges traditional notions of art display and interaction. By combining physical movement and digital engagement, it offers a thought-provoking exploration of the impermanence and connectivity that define our contemporary experience. The exhibition invites viewers to be active participants, discovering, collecting, and sharing artworks in a constantly shifting environment, much like the digital world we inhabit.

Coffee Table Books - Primary Visual Research (LO1)
Sunset Survivors
Book about dying industries in Hong Kong
pros
beautiful portraiture photography - the images really capture the people's personalities and also the trade they specialise in
I love how in the book the type is mostly about the tradesman themselves and their story, but also has information about the industry they are in
There are pages throughout the book that have more information about Hong Kong's history and why these industries are dying which help bring context and understanding to the book - elevates the reading experience
the grids are nicely layed out, easy to read and understand
red type mixed with black and white is simple but visually intriguing
typeface is easy to read and clear
I like the square shape of the book
cons
some pages look a bit too cluttered, I would rather spread the photos out onto their own spreads rather than cramp them all onto one page
I don't like the grey box surrounding the industry information, I would rather use visual hierarchy of text such as making the text bold or bigger in size to separate the information
some black and white images and some coloured don't mix well in my personal opinion, I would rather have one or the other
book is a little bit too big - i would rather it be a bit smaller so it is easier to read through
Once Upon A Time Hong Kong
Book about the history of hong kong 1910s-1980s
pros
really beautiful old photography from archives - really shows the energy of what Hong Kong used to be like
text is informative and helps give context to the images
spreads are neat and clean, with not too much clutter
i like the focus on the photography - larger pages and big images helps readers to see all the details
cons
book is really big - very hard to read through
not too keen on the typeface mix with cursive and serif
some of the lines are quite long making it harder to read - 8-10 words max
Reflection (LO4)
Both these books were really interesting to look at, especially for the context of my outcome. I really like the Sunset Survivors book layout and also size, I think the photography is really beautifully done and the text isn't too overwhelming. I want to follow this type of layout but I will do some more primary and secondary research to find more inspiration for these types of book layouts.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon -2-
Previously, I made it to Sotenbori and participated in the Sotenbori Arena. With a few arena levels under my belt, it's time to storm the Omi Alliance HQ.
Just kidding! I decide to grind out some more levels in the Sotenbori Arena. I make it to about level 10 before I decide to dip. And I'm glad I do, because I get a nice new weapon for Joon-gi Han. Truthfully, I miss using the electric-affinity knuckles, but this seems like a nice weapon to use instead.
As I grind out the arena, I notice that my bond experience is maxing out with several characters. I decide to head back to Ijincho to participate in some Drink Links.
First up is the best boy, Zhao. The discussion centers around Mabuchi's betrayal -- and his fate. Ichiban questions what happened to Mabuchi after the Omi Alliance fiasco, to which Zhao replies that traitors to the Liumang get turned into meat buns. This leads to a really funny moment where Ichiban remarks that Lao Ma got turned into Bao Ma. Zhao, of course, is just messing with Ichiban -- he has a soft spot for Mabuchi despite what has happened. Zhao has such a big soft spot that he actually helps sneak Mabuchi out of Ijincho to protect him for Seong-hui. The complexity behind Zhao's character is appreciated, and it's nice to see that the first impression he gave earlier in the game is actually nothing more than an act. It's a very interesting dynamic that I don't see a ton of games do often -- or well, for that matter.
Nanba is next, though he isn't in this Drink Link for too long -- the barkeep asks him to go shopping. This, of course, is a misdirection on the barkeep's part. In truth, he wanted to get Nanba out of the bar so he could invite a former nurse from Nanba's hospital to discuss Nanba's wheelings and dealings with Ichiban. The former nurse does show up, but seems both ignorant to her drug-smuggling co-worker's identity and uninterested in discussing further. After getting a call that there's a pachinko machine with a big jackpot, she promptly departs. Nanba arrives just in time to see her and question the men about her, but he gets no answers. He assumes this means Ichiban and the barkeep are planning to throw him a surprise party. A surprisingly cute interaction.
Finally, we have Joon-gi. Honestly, his Drink Link this time wasn't that interesting, though he does mention that the Jingweon are looking for him. I don't dislike Joon-gi, but I wish his character was just a tad bit more interesting. At least he's a powerhouse in battle.
While I'm here, I decide to check out the karaoke machine to see which songs Joon-gi and Zhao brought with them. Interesting, Joon-gi has no song assigned to him. Maybe he's not a big karaoke fan? I decide to try out Zhao's song instead -- "Hell Stew".
As expected, the song is silly but fits Zhao to a T. The karaoke layout continues to give me motion sickness, however. I seriously don't understand why I find this version of the karaoke minigame so hard to follow. It feels like my eyes strain every time I play it.
With new bond levels come new jobs. I decide to play around and swap out some new jobs for most characters. I put Joon-gi into the Enforcer job, mainly so I can build some of his defenses. Meanwhile, I put Zhao into the Chef job, mainly because I think it suits him lore-wise, but also so that he can eventually get Peppermill Blow. Meanwhile, I swapped Eri and Saeko into Idol and Dealer, respectively, just so I can get their second character skills. I then swapped Adachi into Foreman to start grinding that one out. In retrospect, I probably should have done this before grinding out Sotenbori Arena, but alas.
Before heading back to Sotenbori, I notice that there's a substory available on the north side of the city. When I arrive, I find a man crying in pain sitting on a folding chair.
It's traffic census sensei! The man claims to be a traffic census worker, I job I've never heard of. He explains that his job is to count the number of pedestrians passing by a given street. As it turns out, such a thing does exist -- but it's mostly handled electronically in the modern day. He offers to let Ichiban be a traffic census worker for a bit, allowing us to play a pretty simple minigame. Essentially, we have to count how many men walk by on screen for a few seconds. Doing so, and providing him the correct headcount, nets a 10,000 yen reward. Cool.
Speaking to traffic census sensei allows us to play the minigame again. The second task requires us to pay attention to the women on screen, while the third tasks requires us to separately count men and women. Task two wasn't hard, but for some reason I had a lot of difficulty with task three. Keeping track of two separate variables isn't great for my anti-math brain. When I realized I counted eight men and that none of the answers had "eight men" as a choice, I decided to give up and look up the answer instead. I just don't have the time or patience.
Completing task three nets us this small counter, and an assurance that we are next in line to inherit traffic census sensei's title. What an honor. But before we can officially take that title, we have to deal with the Omi Alliance.
Ichi and his crew infiltrate the Omi Alliance HQ by pretending to be caterers. The disguises are paper thin, of course, and when we get to the second floor, the crew insists on using stealth to avoid Omi Alliance members as opposed to fighting them. Which is exactly what I do as I run around the second floor like a lunatic looking for safes.
Arakawa is apparently holed up in the so-called "Dragon Chamber", which we encounter the door to pretty quickly. Making my way to the chamber, however, I encounter a group of Omi Alliance members who readily expose our disguises and do battle with us. Just when we think it's over, however, we are greeted by...
The only other Yakuza I've played in Yakuza 0, and truthfully I never even finished it... But I can imagine the surprise on everyone's faces seeing these two. Majima I am very familiar with because of 0, and I'm assuming Saejima is similarly highly-regarded. Maybe? Idk.
Majima decides to battle us one-to-one to start. He is level 50... significantly higher than our current levels. But I am surprised at the amount of damage I am able to deal to him. Even though he is dealing strong damage in return, I can easily heal through it. As long as the battle keeps up like this, I should be --
Fuck.
And within minutes, I am completely wiped out by Majima and his horde of doppelgängers. Seriously, what the hell is this massive difficulty spike? The doppelgangers are stupid strong and fast, being able to attack twice in the time it takes for any of my characters to go through one round of combat. It becomes abundantly clear that I am outmatched and lose pretty soundly. Rather than attempting the dungeon over, I decide to load the autosave, which graciously happened right before wandering into the Omi Alliance HQ.
Clearly out-leveled and outmatched, I decide to head back to Sotenbori Arena for a bit of grinding. As of the time of this writing, I reached level 40 with most of the cast. I'm not sure if it's worth it to go to 50, but next time I will try Majima one more time. While grinding out the arena, I made it to level 15 and got these two accessories, both of which seem useful. I also got wiped out on floor 16, where I learned the hard way that the game actually ends when Ichiban gets knocked out. Fun
