Flowers in her Hair
Flowers were and continue to be a natural and beautiful style choice for women's hair.
The Regency era was a time of intense focus on the heads of women and girls. Hats and bonnets in many styles, headbands or "bandeaux", elaborate hairstyles, and flowers, of course! Flowers alone or as decorative elements to hats and bonnets, as well as various combinations of flowers, headbands, and hair jewelry.

It strikes me that this chapter stands out as one of the most significant and symbolic among all the Waterloo digressions. The way it is crafted is simply stunning. The depiction of the living, seemingly unstoppable mass comprised of 'giant men, on colossal horses,' totalling three thousand five hundred, is nothing short of terrifying. Just imagine such a mass advancing toward your town or village. From the vivid portrayal by Hugo, one can almost imagine them as possessing a hive mind, adding to the horror of the scene.
Then comes the unexpected twist—unexpected by all except the guide Lacoste. A trench, the hollow road to Ohain, into which thousands of living creatures from Dubois' brigade fall and perish. Hugo provides yet another blood-curdling, detailed description of catastrophe—a horror of an entirely different nature, yet a horror, nonetheless.
The final stroke on this remarkable chapter is Hugo's assertion that God had had enough of Napoleon. This is posited as the primary reason for his defeat at Waterloo. 'It was time that this vast man should fall.' And, of course, 'He embarrassed God.' Once again, we note another reference to 'the infinite.’
I’m so glad I re-read this chapter. I love it!

Name: Ezekiel "Zeke" Hugo Scott-Dubois

Personality: he's the wittiest, smartest, most judgemental bitch you will ever meet, think Gigi but worse
Special Talents: he's partially a seer (after Isabelle)
Who they like better: Issy
Who they take after more: personality-wise? unfortunately Gigi
Personal Headcanon: He got sorted into Ravenclaw, just like his mothers, quickly making professor Flitwick realise that it's time to retire. Wickedly talented in Charms and Transfiguration and easily bored he kept both his classmates and teachers on their toes.

Read the full article

Name: Suzanna Louise “Zanna” Hendrix D.O.B: May 4th Age: 21 Species: human (latent psychic) Family: Samuel Hendrix & Renee Dubois-Hendrix (parents), Suzanna Hendrix (paternal grandma), James Hendrix (paternal grandpa), Hugo Dubois (maternal grandpa), Louise Dubois (maternal grandma)
Suzanna Hendrix had a pretty good childhood growing up. She had two artistic parents; a mother who was a painter and a father who was a professional photographer. They both taught her to see the beauty in the world and they always encouraged her to express herself. She got to spend a lot of time with both sets of grandparents, and all four of them loved to spoil her (she was the only girl on her mother’s side and the youngest grandchild on her father’s side).
As Suzie grew up, her parents began fighting more and more. Her mom thought her dad worked too much and wasn’t attentive enough, while her dad thought her mom was too demanding, yet simultaneously flaky–it was true, her mom was late for just about everything. Ultimately they ended up getting a divorce; technically they had joint custody, but Suzie ended up spending most of her time with her dad.
Right before she started high school, Suzie started going by “Zanna”. She maintained the nickname her father had given her was childish and immature, while Zanna sounded cool and mysterious. Along with the name change, came a new haircut, which she would keep for years to come.
Zanna loved art in all forms, but what she was drawn to most was photography, like her dad. She’d grown up helping out in her dad’s studio and loved working with film. When it came time for her to start applying for colleges, all the schools she applied for had strong art programs. She planned on studying photography and design. Zanna was all set to go once she graduated; she’d been accepted into her top choice school, her dad helped her find and move into her first apartment, and she was settled in with a few weeks to go before her first college classes began.
That’s when life as she knew it ended.
A car accident left Zanna permanently blinded. Instead of living in her fabulous little studio apartment and going to art school, Zanna had to move back home and start going to a school for the blind so she could relearn how to do everything and find out how to be as independent as possible. Her dad hovered for the first few weeks after the accident, but then started employing tough love; he always pushed her to do as much for herself as possible, refusing to baby her. It turned out to be the best thing for her, because she ended up adjusting fairly quickly to her new normal. Her dad even went so far as to get her into some sculpting classes so she could still enjoy art in some way, even if she couldn’t see it.
Zanna was blind for less than a year before something else horrible happened. Her dad got pulled into a drug run, playing an unwitting mule when someone asked him to hold a doll for them, and Zanna got dragged in along with him when the crooks came looking for their heroin stuffed inside. They got a bit more than they bargained for; while Zanna was blind, she was far from defenseless. She tricked them, tried to keep them busy for as long as possible until help could arrive, and when the criminals got frustrated with her and attacked, she fought back with everything she had.
Two years and lots of therapy later, Zanna is now a mostly well-adjusted blind woman. She lives on her own now (though her dad still checks in frequently) and makes pottery and smaller sculptures on commission.

Saint-Beuve is "a skillful poetic artist" but lacks "the divine spark, the God-given afflatus."
*not laughing at 'afflatus,' not laughing, not laughing, totally laughing*
And his next volume, in which he "again finds himself disenchanted, cries 'All is vanity,' and sits at the feet of Werther and yearns for death," is a failure and marks the end of his career as a poet.
The Revue de Paris is founded in 1829; here Saint-Beuve begins to publish the "literary portraits," "the peculiar combination of biography and criticism," for which he will become known.
"In 1830 came the July Revolution which overthrew the old monarchy, and the young generation of writers breaking up into antagonistic sections, Sainte-Beuve went back to the Globe, which became the organ of the Saint-Simonists. In the ferment of new ideas, old friends became estranged."
Riiiight, it's that "ferment of new ideas." Not, say, sleeping with Hugo's wife. Of which there is no mention. Instead, we move immediately to Saint-Beuve fighting a duel with someone named Dubois, who was the challenger. Saint-Beuve takes his place "with his pistol in one hand, and his umbrella in the other. When the seconds protested, he replied, 'I am willing to be killed, but I am not willing to be wet' (Je veux bien être tué; mais mouillé, non.)
And from there directly to "Though a contributor to the Saint-Simonian organ, Saint-Beuve took no stock in the doctrines of the 'moonstruck' sect. Ever greedy of new intellectual pasture, he attended their religious services out of curiosity merely, to see a strange and interesting spectacle; 'I may have smelled the bacon,' he said, 'but I was not caught in the trap.'
"Goethe has somewhere said that there is no more enviable situation for a man to find himself in, than between a love that is ending and a love that is beginning. A quarterly-reviewer thinks that if this is true of intellectual attachments, Saint-Beuve must have been the happiest of men." Quotes someone else who calls him a "literary Don Juan,--a soul constantly on the look-out to espouse some other soul, and then, as soon as the espousals were consummated, as constantly looking out for reasons for divorce. His literary idols, when once his enthusiasm had cooled, became to him, apparently, like those of Wordsworth's youth, 'as dead as a theater fresh emptied of spectators.''"
Anecdote about his treatment of the portrait of an unnamed author, banished from pride of place to the ground floor and then palmed off on friends. Comparison of his assessments over time of de Vigny.
"The truth is," says Billy, determined to find a way to paint this pattern in a better light, "Saint-Beuve was one of those ardent, eclectic, impressionable spirits that cannot associate long with any great mind, or set of minds, without sympathizing with them, yet is too universally sympathetic to hold the same sentiments long."
But then we get to
"Expressed opinions,--the critical judgements at which he arrived from time to time,--seemed to him not the grave matters of faith they are with most men, but only temporary statements, to be modified from time to time by fresh facts and revelations."
and okay, you know, that's fair.
We're up to 36 notes for Sainte-Beuve blogging, so here we go. I am starting with four pages of front matter, which I didn't count towards the complete page count.
So. Starting with a page of blurbs / excerpts from reviews of Sainte-Beuve's criticism in general, beginning with Matthew Arnold calling him "the finest critical spirit of our time" and the rest saying the same thing at greater length.
And then a translator's preface about how he chose the essays for this volume: "The final decision has been influenced by two considerations,--a desire to choose themes of intrinsic and permanent interest, and a a desire to give a due variety." Yes, that is a comma followed immediately by an em dash.
He goes on: "That the translator has done justice to the original in this attempt to reproduce in English come of the masterpieces of modern French criticism, he is very far from flattering himself. If the best translation, even of a thirs or fourth rate author is inevitably but the "seamy side of the cloth," then he may well despair who has undertaken to convey in English the curiosa felicitas, the subtle graces, and the delicate refinements of Sainte-Beuve's style. Adequately to do so would imply a genius hardly inferior to that of Sainte-Beuve himself."
(...man, why don't my faves get translators that love them THIS MUCH.)
And then the TOC. The essays chosen are on Lewis the Fourteenth (Lewis. LEWIS), Fenelon, Bossuet, Massilon, Pascal, Rousseau, Madame Geoffrin, Joubert, Guizot, the Abbe Galiani, and Frederic the Great; if I make it out of the intro (EIGHTY SIX PAGES of biography), I will take requests on which essays to tackle first.
...oh god and we've gone up to 45 notes in the time it's taken me to read and type this. So subtracting four pages of front matter, that'll be up through page xli of the intro.

‘Hugo was so very nervous , he kept stopping doctors before entering Mary’s room , he could help the shaking in his body , he wanted to be there with her but they wouldn’t allow him to go in just yet.. so he patiently waited outside . After hours of waiting he was sitting outside the room , trying to keep himself together until someone approached him and it was one of the doctors , Hugo jumped out of his seat so fast that the chair fell back. The man told him that everything went fine and now he could come in and see his wife and his new baby girl. Hugo was on the verge of tears just as he entered the room , he saw Mary holding a small dark-haired baby... she was beautiful... beautiful like her mother... he couldn’t believe his own eyes... something so small and pure.. something so precious... he couldn’t help himself but burst in tears as he approached both of them and leaned down to look at his tiny daughter. ‘ ---“Hugo stop crying...“---- Mary commented with a small chuckle , mocking the man who looked like he was about to collapse from joy , and the amount of emotion that was pouring down his eyes. In all his life he never thought he would find something like this... but here he is standing beside the love of his life and his own daughter... the man leaned down enough to hug them both as tears continued to flow down his face. --- She is as beautiful as you.... --- He smiled widely , as he felt how his own heart might explode... It felt so unreal.. but there he was standing right beside them... his new family.... ‘So what is her name? Heh... Her name is Kyeema‘ Daddy’s little kangaroo..... @shinylikediamond
