I really enjoy this edit so I absolutely wanted to translate and share it. The way it deals with how people are perceived and the way they're addressed is really skillfully done. The coloring of the pronouns draws the focus specifically on the relationship between the different high-could quintet members as well as Jing Yuan's attitude towards Dan Feng vs Dan Heng and whether he recognizes them as separate individuals.

The fact that Jing Yuan is never addressed by his name and always by his title General is a subtle knife, given that he's basically lost everyone of the high-cloud quintet who were the people he was closest to and who'd address him by name.

Now, he's one of the most respected arbiter generals, a position that finally gave him enough power to free one friend and give him another chance at life, but this said friend denies any personal involvement with "the general" :')

While this edit's emotional beats might make it seem like a BE, it is actually hopeful to me because it does build up to Jing Yuan acknowledging that Dan Heng is his own person and not only a shadow of Dan Feng. And that is the first step to actually being able to build a new relationship with him.

Also the lyrics of this song are just so fitting! If I may ask this, please do rewatch the edit once and pay attention to the lyrics🥺 Jingliu's issue being something he regrets forever (regret that she became mara-struck, regret that he failed to end her life when that was what she asked of him), Jing Yuan being Dan Heng's saving light, Blade's fate with the Stellaron Hunters not being something that Jing Yuan could've anticipated. And the whole chorus just being a dig at Jing Yuan and Dan Heng both lol. Leaving it here again for reference.

Oh! If you're talking about not quite fox Feixiao can I offer the Caninae subfamily Lycalopex?. They're the south American foxes. However taxonomically they're more closely related to wolves than to foxes despite their appearance. And are an example of convergent evolution.

I was thinking of giving one to Feixiao in a Daemon AU (From his dark materials). It was a way to combine my private writting with my current studies in a biology stem field. (You see a lot about taxonomy in bioinformatics)

anon i need you to know that you sent me down a rabbithole about lycalopex. i was reading papers and articles last night about phylogeny and taxa like it was BAD (read: good. very incredibly good and fun). i studied some bioinformatics in school a few years back (really basic microarrays and gene sequencing) and i found it really intersting, even if complicated. taxonomy on the other hand is a huge part of my current envirosci course and i LOVEEEE it !! phylogenetic trees are my favourite kind of diagram <333 in any case, is see where you’re coming from from the not-quite-fox angle but i personally my borzoi interpretation more, both because dogs are direct descendants of wolves and the borzoi specifically as a breed as bred to hunt wolves. it’s the themes, you understand.

also, HDM !!! wow i haven’t thought of this franchise in years… admittedly i neither watched the netflix show nor read any other book besides la belle sauvage from the prequel (?) series the book of dust having picked it up as an in-flight read while i was travelling with my family. i wasn’t as invested in the characters (go figure, since i didn’t read any of the other works lmao) but i was super drawn in by the concept of hdm’s dæmons. i’ve always maintained that if i had one it’d be a fox LMAO but i can see the vision of fei having a dæemon from genus lycalopex !! i still maintain that a borzoi would also be pretty cool though 👉👈

the thing about hcq fix-it fics are that even if all of it didn't end in tragedy, not very much would actually change for present canon jing yuan.

jingliu would still have become mara struck (that lady is OLD, even if she can retain her sanity for 1100+ years, she wont be able to for 1800+ years), baiheng with her foxian lifespan will have passed away, dan feng will have undergone a proper hatching rebirth once if not twice already and will not recognize jing yuan, and yingxing... duh.

jing yuan would maybe not as violently and abruptly be separated from the hcq and he will not be cleaning up their mess for 800 years afterwards, but he would still grieve, would still become arbiter-general and bear the responsibilities that come with the position.
