Finished Season 1 of my HSMTMTS rewatch and I am having FEELINGS
Honestly I just love season 1. Like I adore all the seasons obviously, for their own reasons, but there's just something about season 1. Not only the first season but the first one I saw, and it's just so special. I remember looking at the tag after the season, before I even had a Tumblr account, and freaking out over the deleted scenes. And laughing over it with my sister but still being actually excited for the next episode to come out. I know I can always rewatch it, and the rest of the show, but it's still sad knowing we'll never get another curtain call, another choosical, another school dance, another what team, and another of every other amazing moment after next week.
I'm just not ready to let them go :'/

so im watching season 1 of 9-1-1: lone star because i started watching during 2x02 (literally my first impression of the show was 🚨tim dying🚨, i just-)
and i don't appreciate them giving judd and grace (my beloveds) so much angst, we're only up to 1x05 and yet we've had two angsty plotlines
i will be posting other thoughts and reactions to things in this show so if you follow me strictly for my hsmtmts posts or my lab rats posts, you have been warned (im still gonna post about those two don't worry)

I thought this year was gonna be a beauty, but it’s definitely looking like a beast. Get it? ‘Cause we’re... Putting on... I’ll go.

Auditioning
at YAC
Tumblr media
verses at East High
Tumblr media
2x02 "Typecasting" - written by Ann Kim and directed by Kimberly McCullough
Just a quick example of how the visual language of film can be harnessed to best express the intent of the narrative -- mini-analysis below cut.
The screenplay no doubt provided details to some level of specificity, like, that the role of the YAC teacher ought to be cast as some manner of crotchety old man, at least. But what the script definitely contains is a story that is very much about contrasting how different the drama student experiences are at East High versus YAC.
For instance, here's Nini bringing her unique vision to her YAC coursework:
Nini: We thought it'd be interesting to, uh, interpret the scene in our own words for this exercise.
YAC Instructor: It's an audition, not an exercise.
And here's Miss Jenn describing part of East High's actual audition:
Miss Jenn: A song of your choice. Whatever shows off you, the best.
The story wants to show not only that the teachers at their respective institutions have vastly different ideological approaches to teaching the dramatic arts, but also that the YAC philosophy will stifle rather than bolster Nini's creative growth. Whereas in Season One, Miss Jenn is credited as giving Nini a voice (in Nini's words, that is; it's more that Miss Jenn encouraged her to believe she deserves to use the voice she already had), YAC literally silences Nini when she attempts to express herself.
So how does the final product communicate these differences? And how does it influence the way you feel about either school's philosophy?
Let's look at the shot of the YAC instructor's response to Nini's innovative approach to the exercise:
The instructor is an elderly, mean-looking white man who is scowling, confused, at his students with his hand raised to stop them. The image is crisp, as most everything in the frame, aside from his moving hand, is in clear focus. The man is wearing all black, sitting in an old-fashioned straight-backed black chair, surrounded by the dark shadows of the classroom. The shot is lit in cool, "natural white" lighting. Last of all, he is framed left of center, addressing Nini who is off screen on the right side of the camera.
Now Miss Jenn's reaction to her students audition group warmup:
She's a middle-aged white woman who is beaming at the students with an expression of joyous pride, and she is applauding them. The school auditorium behind her is deeply out of focus, indistinct swaths of burgundy and black, and some reflective detail in the seats creates a half dozen huge bokeh effects, evoking the idea of candles. She is backlit from below, which creates some haloing in her light colored hair and helps frame her outline against the soft background. The color grading is very warm, and the colors themselves are richly saturated. Although she's positioned barely right of center, her eye line is to the left side of the camera.
These two shots are both of drama teachers addressing their students at an audition. But since the story wants to highlight the differences between these similar situations, both shots were carefully composed with an eye towards communicating that contrast.
Let's summarize the visual elements used that allow (and encourage) the viewer to compare and contrast:
YAC: monochrome old man; EH: vibrant woman
YAC: appears displeased; EH: appears overjoyed
YAC: gesturing to stop and rebuke; EH: gesturing to celebrate and approve
YAC: sharp, cold image; EH: soft, warm image
YAC: left side of screen; EH: right side of screen
So how do these contrasts make us, the audience, feel about the subject, context, and message of the two images? What do they make us feel? Why are they effective? What other choices could have been made to affect the result, for better or for worse or just for the different?
Well, that's your homework, Wildcats. I want you to really think about it, and keep an eye out for other instances of a show or movie communicating something to you using tools of the cinematic language other than dialogue.
(There are so many expressions of the same types of stories, but we still watch/read/hear them because much of the time the storytelling experience is less about what's being said and more about how it's being said.)
