Looking at the Goliath layoffs, and all I have is anecdotal evidence, this seems much more like a flex by management on labor than a typical tech layoff (startup that can’t raise again or disrupted company on the way down). To me, last-in first-out either by job function or product area + job function seems a lot more consistent with we ramped up hiring too fast that this seemingly random selection of decade plus veterans, new hires, and everyone in-between.
To me it gives decimation vibes-- we aren’t going to tolerate failure anymore; we aren’t going to tolerate this nonsense; no one is indispensable; labor market is loose -- it’s management’s game now. Ofc, this doesn’t seem to actually do anything about the rest-and-vesters, the folks who think their main job function is to wage culture war internally, or broccoli man himself.
I think there is some risk to this plan though. That said Goliath did seem to have more agitation for organizing white collar labor than its peers. I think a lot of the labor agitators could totally be willing to call Goliath’s bluff. While Goliath does have a lot of neurotics, I’m also somewhat confident that a lot of the constantly distressed there behave that way is because it works. It makes the civil rights apparatus take their concerns seriously, it makes HR take their concerns (at least performatively), and it makes their colleagues disproportionately educated at highly ranked institutions take their concerns seriously.
It’s a new day and I’m excited to see what happens next (though my heart goes out to anyone being paid very well to keep the cat video mines running who got caught in the middle of it).
