Do you, or anyone actually, know where/when the '-bowl' sufix started being used in Fandom? Because I can't find any kind of origin, and surprisingly Fanlore doesn't have a article about it (as far as I checked maybe I didn't search well?). I just found and know that it's used for kinda old and relatively new fandoms, thanks to a two-year-old Reddit post.

For anyone who doesn't get/know about the '-bowl' sufix: is basically an All × One thing. For example, if you encounter 'Dekubowl' this means that Deku, the character, is shipped with everyone or that at least everyone else have a crush with Deku.

I can only think of the 'Super Bowl' (just as one comment in that Reddit post suggest) for its origin, but when we talk about Fandom culture we never know. It could have originated from anything no-related to the Super Bowl, LOL.

Ooh, interesting. I've never heard of this in my life, and I have no idea what a -bowl suffix is supposed to mean, even if I guess it has to do with the super bowl.

It's not surprising Fanlore doesn't have this if it's coming from BNHA or somewhere similar. Fanlore is fantastic on the history of Western "Media Fandom", zines, K/S, etc. It's much weaker in areas that OTW early adopters haven't spent as much time in.

You should write the -bowl article yourself!

I went into AO3's tag search and looked for 'bowl'. I found 1311 tags, 90 of them canonicals.

I'm seeing a ton of references to the Super Bowl, dust bowl AUs, pet play with pet food bowls, Dream in the fishbowl, unending uses like "I'm crying into my bowl of cereal as I write this", "bowl of honey nut feelios", "bowl of pornflakes", "me shaking the food bowl of sbi wilbur-centric angst: come get y'all's juice", etc., and plenty of references to YOI katusdon bowls. Lots of fandoms and episodes have 'bowl' in their titles.

Zeroing in on more related things, I'm seeing BNHA over and over and not much else...

EXCEPT!

Fruit bowls!

I see scattered references to "let's add him into that whole fruit bowl" and "the whole fruit bowl is here" and so on. Some of them are crack fic where everyone is a banana, but a lot of them seem to be a metaphor for "everything together".

Okay, I just spent far too much time trying to categorize tags. Out of the 'bowl' ones, about a third appear to be this kind of sense (counting by number of tags, not number of works).

Game of Thrones has a bunch, but they refer (as far as I know) to which characters will hypothetically kill each other and emerge victorious, not to group shipping.

Some tags I found, like 'edelbowl' sounded more like a group ship than an X/everyone. I also found a scattering of tags that were like 'all of them in a bowl together', which is probably related.

But mainly, what I found is that this is from BNHA and it's recent.

The other fandoms where I found it were:

That's giving me a very distinctive picture of a fan who's probably in their 20s or 30s, mostly like anime and some video games, and is not the type that edits Fanlore.

There's nothing actually old here: it's recent anime and stuff that is still a megafandom, like Naruto.

I'm seeing a scattering of 'dekubowl' from 2017 and then other character tags taking off in like 2019. This is definitely a recent trend in terminology, at least on AO3.

Some Ninjago Harry Potter AU

Lloyd

- growing up he REALLY wanted to be a slytherin

- garmadon is an evil wizard (under a strong imperious curse) and misako travels around the world studying runes so lloyd was left on his own

- pureblood

- when the sorting hat sorted him into hufflepuff he was quaking

- “THIS HAT IS RIGGED”

- he tried to get in a lot of trouble to try to convince teachers that he’s not that kind loyal hufflepuff boy and maybe they would move him into another house

- he would wear a lot of green in spite

- he never really fit in with the hufflepuff kids and during meals he would try to sit with the slytherin kids but they would always bully and make fun of him

- not to mention the whole school doesn’t trust him because his dad is an evil wizard

- he went to go eat in the hallway by himself when he found an older group of boys eating together all from different houses which turned out to be the ninja

- long story short he finally made some friends and he learns to accept his house uwuwuwu xdxdxdxd

- age wise I’m still working this out but he probably gets into a magical accident whether it’s a potion or a strong spell/hex but it made him age up and oddly they couldn’t get the spell to wear off it doesn’t really make sense but shush I’m figuring it out ok :,)

- even though he physically turned older he still had to stay as a 1st year so he’s this random teenager surrounded by little gremlins

- he became the hufflepuff keeper

- favorite class is herbology

- not to be edgy but his bogart his probably his dad trying to hurt him

- patronus is a either a snake or a lizard

- every once in a while he gets a letter from his mom

- grades are pretty good he’s good at all the physical magic stuff but he’s lazy with his homework

Kai

- you already know this boy is a strong gryffindor

- he’s probably the proudest gryffindor you’ll ever meet

- 5th year

- gryffindor chaser

- halfblood

- his mother and father were aurors that died in combat

- he wants to be an auror too,both him and Lloyd

- he’s good at spells and such but his grades are awful that boy has the biggest procrastination problem

- he’s the life of the party in the common room

- he probably has a detention problem too, him and lloyd are partners in crime

- leader of the “lloyd protection squad” against bullies

- favorite class is defense against the dark arts

- his bogart is a tsunami

Jay

- not to color code but this boy is ravenclaw

- muggleborn

- 4th year

- smuggles “muggle stuff” into the school

- he gets Kai to try Doritos and since then kai stole all of the bags of them

- wants to be teacher at hogwarts when he grows up, either to teach charms or muggle studies

- actually does all the homework and has good grades

- ravenclaw seeker

- Kai occasionally “gets help” as in copies his homework

- favorite class is charms

- patronus is a blue jay

- has a snowy owl named flash

- bogart is a judging crowd

Cole

- hufflepuff uwu

- 6th year

- favorite class is care of magical creatures

- if anyone calls someone a mudblood she spawns instantly and slaughters them

- her opinions arnt that popular in slytherin but most are too afraid to argue with her

- wants to work for the ministry

- her patronus is a cat haha nyah

- bogart is failure wether a failed tested or anything on the lines of that

- great grades

- favorite class is transfiguration

Garmadon

- evil wizard but only because he’s under the imperious curse via the overlord

- he’s been under the curse ever since lloyd was born

- he tries to fight back but since the overlord is so powerful its almost useless

Ninjago/The Owl House au...

I decided to essentially stick to their ninja colours for their school tracks so Kai is a Bard, Zane an illusionist, Jay a Healer, Cole a Beast Trainer, Nya is both on the abomination track and Illusionist since I didn’t want to just have her the same as Zane, and Lloyd is on the Plant track (but he’s also Small cause Au means he doesn’t have to magically age up >:3)

Ninjago Hogwarts headcanons?

Who are you how did you know I’m an HP fan

- Lloyd is the sweetest little Ravenclaw you’ve ever met. He’s such a fast learner, and his love of knowledge has no set boundaries - if you’re willing to teach him he’s willing to learn.

- Jay is the most stubborn Gryffindor on the planet. What’s that? You said he can’t jump off his broom, do a flip, then accio it back to him before he smashes into the quidditch pitch? Hah. Prepare to eat those words coward.

- Nya on the other hand is Fight Me, Fiend incarnate. She catches you picking on one of the first years? She’s managed to make up a hundred and one new personalized hexes just for you.

- Kai being a Slytherin absolutely baffles people who’ve met his little sister from Ravenclaw. Then they actually meet him - and it alllll makes sense. His grades have to be top notch, he has to master every spell, he has to be the Best.

- Cole is the definition of the Hufflepuff sleeping giant. A super big softie, he kind of breezes right through class and most social interactions...unless you’re mean to the first years, or mean to Lloyd in particular. Then he shows off the hexes Nya taught him second year.

- Zane is usually so quiet that people just assume he’s a studious Ravenclaw, until they do a double take at the bright scarlet and gold on his robes. The guy has a protective streak a mile wide, and will not hesitate to put himself in very dangerous situations to protect someone.

So, since you have the HP au, do you think since Jay is a little bit of a wild child he’ll try to sneak and learn to do the Animagus spell (the one that allows you to change into animals at will bc becoming an animal is cool and he’s a ravenclaw, he absorbs knowledge)(and which of course Zane and Nya were trying to stop him and those who join his little endeavor to become Animagi) and what you think their Animagus creatures would be?? Just curious and sorry for asking this stupid question...

But yes! One day he read in a book about animagus and he became very interested in it, he started to practice in secret (his animal is a blue jay) all the ninja were in on his secret and kai, lloyd and Cole started practicing themselves. After school though he registered officially as an animagus.
