PREMISE & PLOT

PREMISE

“You must remember that this was in the old Merry England of Gramarye, when the rosy barons ate with their fingers, and had peacocks served before them with all their tail feathers streaming, or boars' heads with the tusks stuck in again—when there was no unemployment because there were too few people to be unemployed—when the forests rang with knights walloping each other on the helm, and the unicorns in the wintry moonlight stamped with their silver feet and snorted their noble breaths of blue upon the frozen air.” - T.H. White, The Once and Future King.

What know you of Arthur, and his Queen, and his Knights, traveller? Little or much, perhaps; something or nothing. Welcome to our land of jousts and questing; a land of chivalry and honour long since forgotten by your modern times, where our codes are all-important, our good name all that we have. Wander awhile, perhaps, in the thronging streets of Camelot, where all may be sure of finding the welcome that they seek. Sink yourself into the Pits wherein you may drink and whore to your heart’s content, or seek out some nobler calling in the wide sunlit roads where the wealthy merchants waddle, fat in silks and velvets. Even, perhaps, venture to the castle itself, squat on the hill, where the King and his Court while away the long days with grand tournaments and affairs of state. Walk beneath the silver portcullis, cross the broad courtyards, flirt with the pretty maids and, if you are of bold inclination, even with the ladies of the Court themselves.

Or, perhaps, traveller, you are not of that nature. Perhaps you would sooner slip through a back way, dodging through narrow alleys and slipping past brewers’ carts heavy with the ale that fuels these lower levels of the castle’s functions. You might slip upon a heap of manure, or duck beneath a line heavy with the day’s washing, and hence, if you were quick and sharp, if you knew what you sought, you might come perhaps to Merlin’s House. Quicker yet, sharper yet, and you might win his favours, or at least his attention; of that, who knows what may come? There are rumours, yes, that they teach his wizardry now in the north, that others know of his ways, but in Camelot, the wizard is and will always be Merlin. Others may practise in the winding streets of the town; their wooden signs may creak over the heads of passers-by, offering philtres and herbs and all manner of mysteries, but they are lesser by nature - lesser by law - and so the Wizard reigns supreme.

Men’s swords hang at their hips in these times, and their scabbards are always loose; there is unrest on all sides, they say that the magic is on the rise, and that the Saxons are coming, and perhaps even the Court itself is at loggerheads. Watch the steps that you take, if you choose to stay, and watch the steps of your friends more closely still, for who can say where their blades may slip if they are forced to an impossible choice? Who can say where their wands may be hid?

Trust is in short supply in Albion these days, and Camelot has its ration cut shorter still.

PLOT

The year is 998AD, and Hogwarts has just produced its first graduating class. King Arthur reigns over the land of Albion, Excalibur mounted above his youthful head as a reminder to all who visit of the power he bears; the Round Table’s Knights quest forth far and wide in search of glory, honour, and gold. The people prosper, old Merlin reigns over all Albion’s magic as the Court Mage, and the fields flourish. Yet still there are rumblings; the young witches and wizards trickle steadily across Arthur’s northern border in search of a Hogwarts education, the peoples of mainland Europe have their eyes upon his lands, and even within his own Court, not all is as it should be, for whisperings of love are afoot, and when affairs of the heart are at stake, a knight may perhaps forget his chivalric honour and duty.

Perhaps.

Uncertainty presses on all sides; the Seers and the prophets produce little of value. Still, the search for the Holy Grail is fruitless. Those in the Welsh borderlands speak of new and diabolical plots; witches opposed to the King’s rule and to Merlin’s power, their own abilities honed in the wilderness without the civilising influence of Hogwarts teachers or Camelot apprentice-masters. This is a land steeped in myth and where legends are forged every day; magic brims from its soil and sparkles in the depths of its streams, drips from its trees and crystallises in the sweat of helmet-clad foreheads. All sense that something is coming, but what it will be and from which direction it will come are impossible to divine. And so the King reinforces his guard at the borders, losing men he can ill spare from his capital; so, Merlin chants his spells and weaves his enchantments, peering at his crystal ball through rheumy eyes desperate for the faintest hint of what is to come; so the Hogwarts professors, still at the outset of their great project, reinforce their walls and watch warily for Arthurian hordes from the south. Meanwhile, in the depths of the wilderness…

Well, who knows?

But it has long been said that tension and heavily armed men make for poor bedfellows.

Start of Something New

A Wizards Council Event - Year: 978

In large hall, lit entirely by candle light, a young withdrawn man stands to the side of the room hoping not to be noticed by anyone. Unfortunately for him a young child has spotted him.

Becoming uncomfortably self-conscious under the child’s gaze, he breaks and talks to her. 

Exasperated that he is now stuck with this child, and not wishing to encourage any further interaction he purposefully ignores her question.

Slightly taken aback by the child’s sombre tone he found himself sympathising and asking...   

Surprised by the child’s maturity he decides that a conversation with her is mildly better than the alternative mind numbing boredom

Salazar decides to humour Rowena and keep listening as this conversation was infinitely better than engaging with anyone from the Wizard’s Council.

As Rowena confided in Salazar, she produced a twig with a silvery strand of hair wrapped around the length of it. Unicorn hair - ‘how fitting for her innocence’ Salazar found himself thinking.

Still in shock from hearing that the twig and hair works as a wand Salazar asks, some what bluntly, 

Amused by her reasoning Salazar couldn’t keep a straight face. Determined to show him that she should be taken seriously Rowena continued.

Again the child surprised Salazar and before he knew it he found he was offering advice.

Salazar: May I?

Salazar holds out his hand asking for Rowena’s “wand”. Rowena didn’t want to hand it over but her desire to learn overrides her suspicion and she allows Salazar to take the twig and hair.

There’s a loud crash as a stack of plates clatter to the floor. Salazar quickly hands the wand back to Rowena. 

Salazar: Here,  you can have this back!

Rowena was already too busy practising to hear the compliment from Salazar. 

From somewhere across the room a disembodied voice starts calling “Rowena!” 

Salazar shudders at hearing Rowena say his name.

The Chamber of Secrets wasn’t the only hidden passageway in Hogwarts, that was obvious to anyone, the school was filled with mysteries that even the professors were unaware of so little did they know Salazar Slytherin himself was currently sat hidden away deep in the bowls of the school reading a book next to a fireplace in a room he’d designed just for himself. 

There he’d gone undisturbed for a very long time until now, the sound of the door opening making him lower his book, his head turning to investigate who had stumbled upon him and how they had managed to do so.

Kassy: @moonywritesfanfic and I attended a Harry Potter Trivia Night tonight!! We decided to cosplay as Rowena and Helga (and won😜)

I now have a full head to toe period appropriate cosplay for Rowena and I’m so excited!!

We also came in second place which is awesome
