Initial Research: AI + technology in design

As this topic is currently one of the most influential amongst design and online culture, I wanted to start looking into the ways AI is shifting creation. I personally have a natural opposition to this topic, however, with the currency of its development i still wanted to research into it.

Artists such as Shane Fu and Hoxxoh have been seeking ways of making the world around them interactive. Through focusing on something physical such as street-art, they have utilised CGI to expand the art past real-life limitations, creating this animatic scene. 

I think this is a really interesting and forward method of working, which amazes me with its complexity. However, it has started to make me think about this weird, slightly uncanny creation of another ‘dimension’, which isn’t technically real, however is at the same time.

XK Studio on the other hand has brought elements of real life into a digital space, creating these 3D visuals that are inspired by “natural world, such as micro-organisms, flowers and weather phenomena as well as the realms of science”. I find this extremely interesting, as textures and forms are created purely from the research of physical and natural things, which is bizarre yet captivating. 

I personally find this really intriguing, as this concept explores hypotheticals, yet has motion visuals- which appear to be real.

Its Nice That released articles exploring these themes, mentioning the future direction of design. They state “that technology is here to stay and it’s going to have a large impact on the creative industry and community” and “This year alone, we’ve seen generative AI tools move from being buggy and abstract new technologies to being capable of emulating thousands of art styles, photorealism, 3D renders and more”. However, they wanted to convey a more playful approach to this theme, encouraging designers to “Make the experience about the audience, not the tech.”

Overall, this topic is extremely interesting, and has already prompted me to question my relationship towards it.

POW! WOW! DC

Named after a Mediterranean island off the coast of Spain, Ibiza nightclub on 1st Street NE in the trendy NoMa neighborhood of Washington, DC drew mixed reviews from throngs of night life seekers until forced to shut its doors in 2015. When Washington, DC artist @KellyTowles brought Jasper Wong’s popular Pow! Wow! festival to the city the following year 19 artists, both local and from across the globe, were invited to transform NoMa walls. Among them Douglas Hoekzema, aka Hoxxoh, the popular Miami artist whose work seeks to explore the fabric of time—and whose mesmerizing work has made him a selfie-background superstar—brought new life to the outside of the former nightclub space.  @hoxxoh  @powwowdc
