12 Ways to Improve Your Writing
1. Read a lot more. This can include articles, blog posts, print/ebooks or magazines. But, whatever it is, you need to read more in order to get better at writing.
2. Journal every day. Writing about your day and feelings will not only lead you to get more used to writing frequently, but you’ll be more in tuned with your inner writing voice.
3. List all the topics you want to write about and create questions from them. Make it a goal to answer the questions in different ways (for example: essay style, story form, “how to” posts).
4. Find writing prompts online and work on them to keep the creativity flowing.
5. Make a goal of a new word count each week, so that you’ll get used to writing at a set limit. For example, if you’re used to writing 250 words in a session, up it to 350 words for a week.
6. Use a voice recorder to essentially “talk out” what you want to write about.
7. Resist the urge to edit so that you can get everything you want on paper.
8. As uncomfortable it may seem, share your work with others. Be receptive to criticism.
9.  Find a time you like to write. Many people believe it’s better to write as soon as you wake up, but I find that I do better writing in the middle of the day, at about 2 or 3p.m. Try writing at different times of the day and create your writing schedule around that time.
10. Realize that writer’s block is a real thing but can only be defeated by writing. Even if you write on a subject different from the previous one, it’s better to get all what’s on your mind out on paper.
11. Do timed-exercises to see how much you can write. This can be useful for increasing the amount of words you can write in a non-distracted time limit. See how much and how well you can write in 15 minutes, then increase it by 15 minutes more when you notice your writing getting better.
12. Challenge yourself to produce and publish more writing. Sometimes it can be discouraging to write when you feel like others aren’t noticing your work. The more people see your writing, the more exposure you get. The secret is to make it a goal to publish often so that your writing fears will start to diminish!
