A quest for seeking fulfilment. The six steps I discovered to develop and nurture my passion.. (you can try this out too)
For the best part of my life, I didn’t know what I wanted to do and had no real intent.
I was scared to pursue something I truly wanted or truly believed in because of an overwhelming fear of failure.
It was easier to go and do jobs that I didn’t really care for, after all, if I failed, it wouldn’t really matter.
I followed society’s unwritten rule book and walked the linear path of going to school, getting an education, getting any kind of job so I could pay bills and maybe get married, have a family, etc.
I did everything that I thought was expected of me by family, peers and society.
Having never taken the time to develop and discover my passion, I struggled with a lack of motivation and discipline.
I was frustrated and depressed with life. I unconsciously masked this dissatisfaction with my life by seeking short-term pleasure through other things.
Aged 34, having bounced around different jobs, it came to a point where I was so disillusioned and pissed off that I decided to live for myself for a change.
It was then that I went through a journey which resulted in me developing and discovering my passion. I say ‘develop’ because it took time for my passion to emerge over a six month period.
Looking back and observing what happened, there were very specific steps I took which resulted in this happening.
Here they are, you can try them out for yourself too.
Step #1 - Digital shutdown
We are constantly bombarded by information in the digital / information age everywhere we go.
All of these things tell us what we should be like, how we should behave and what we should do. It confuses the brain.
I shut down from digital for about 7 days (no social media, no tv, no laptop, no mobile phone, no Netflix). This gave an opportunity to get some headspace and reflect about who I was and what I wanted from my life. I spent this time in nature. It gave me a sense of calmness, relaxation, peace of mind. I developed my meditation practice and spent this time reading books.
Step #2 - Social shutdown
Our brain is a receiving and broadcasting station. It’s like a computer. Our brain receives information, processes it and then broadcasts this as our thoughts, emotions, perception, perspective, reality and identity.
As a result, we become a reflection of our habits and daily decisions. What we do, we become
We mirror the people we spend time with and most of us act out the expectations placed on us by friends, family, society and peers.
Our brains are very sensitive to the information we subject ourselves to which I why I became really conscious about everything I do (I stopped listening to particular genres of music, avoid newspapers, tv and even put restrictions on how often I would see particular people).
All of this is why the digital and social shutdowns are so important.
It gives your mind some time to rest from this onslaught of information were subjected to within society.
Step #3 - Brainstorm
With this time alone, I was able to invest this time and energy and focus in on myself without any distraction.
I asked myself a series of questions (you will find them at the end of this post, you can work through them too)
It was through distancing myself from society (through the digital and social shutdown) that I was became an outsider looking in on the world.
This is exactly what you want. It helps you to think freely and clearly without thinking about what everyone else is doing or what you feel society might expect from you.
Step #4 - Make a commitment
I studied the answers I gave to the questions and began to go out and explore.
Nothing else mattered to me. It was my sole focus. I needed to discover my passion.
I booked in time consistently each week to classes (based on the responses I gave) and over time my passion developed.
Step #5 - Reflect
After you going out and exploring new activities take time afterwards to reflect.
Think about the people you met, the conversations you had and the things you got up to.
How did you feel afterwards?
I had a little book which I called the 'Little Book of Appreciative Thoughts'.
I would record three things each time in there to remind myself of what I did and how I felt.
This meant whenever my mind would play tricks with me in the future and in times when I didn't feel motivated I would look in this book and it would remind me of all the positive things I experienced when I did go.
Step #6 - Take the jump
Over a period of 6 months or so, I was kickboxing, running and doing yoga every week.
It was a this point that I realised that I needed to take it to the next level.
I had come to the realisation that this was the lifestyle I wanted to live and gravitated towards studying to make this my career.
I left the industry I worked in and retrained.
I am not going to lie, it was scary and difficult. I recognised that all the doubt in my mind was my mind playing tricks on me.
Fundamentally, I looked within myself and realised that I had found something money could not buy.
I would regret it for the rest of my life if I didn’t take the jump.
I left the ‘security’ of industry I worked in.
As much as I would start again on a salary that was a fraction of what I was on previously and would have to dramatically change my lifestyle, my instinct told me that this was exactly the direction I needed to go in.
These are the questions I worked through, take a look if you’re interested
If you do decide to work through these questions, do let me know if you have any feedback and whether they were helpful for you.
You can also take a look at this short video which compliments the questions above where I share some other tips / ideas / resources I used to help me develop and discover my passion (you can use these too).

The equation of passion part I - Finding your why
and the 10 approaches for your ultimate calling
by Laphat T.
Tumblr media
Search for “how to find my passion” and countless suggestions will occupy your page. However, some suggestions like “think about what you love to do” can be very abstract and hard to answer, not to mention that people who typed in the search term were the one who are not sure about “what they love to do” in the first place.
Ironically, the very person who has all the answer about your passion was none other than yourself. Thus, the questions are only there to serve as mirrors that help you reflect yourself and the good questions are the one that help you see yourself easily, clearly, and with the least distortion possible.
The following 10 approaches gathered below in this article were selected by the criteria of practicality and effectiveness:
1.What you think about most
Be observant with your daily thoughts, and you will notice that some thoughts appear more frequently than others. For example, when you go to restaurant with your friends, you may be unconsciously pondering more about their interior design while one of your friends is wondering how the chef might have prepared the dish differently and your other friend was observing the reaction of people around your table. The same reflection apply to when you watch movies, read a book, hear a news, or was involves in any activities.
Pro : track your authentic characters in their purest form Challenges : Required effort on being conscious with your thoughts
2. What you talked about
In case it is hard to keep track of your thought, here is another way around. Like Ghandi said ““Your beliefs become your thoughts, your thoughts become your words…”
You naturally speak about what matters to you much more often than you realize. One easy method of figuring them out is to simply ask 5 people who you spend time with the most. Just the way you recognized what your friends often talked about, they simply recognized yours.
Pro : Very quick and convenience Challenges : Required you to be open with your close one (it will be easier for some than for other) For the first two approaches, please keep in mind that you are not only looking for what, by also why and how you mention or think about certain issues.
3. What peaked your emotions However, if keeping track of your thoughts is too much work and you don’t feel like getting other people opinions, this approach is for you.  Each of us get pissed and excited at different issues in different degree. For example, people with OCD or high sensitivity to details may be bother my several unique things, but it is also those annoyance that help Michelangelo sculpted his amazing details and allow Charles Darwin meticulously categorized all the different species of animals he encountered.
Pro : For people with obvious and recurring emotional encounter, it is basically your passion shouting in your face. Challenges: The degree of excitement or annoyance that is enough to be considered your path to passion can is debatable.
4. Uniqueness
An excellent question from Peter Thiel is to ask yourself (or your close friends) What is something you believe that nearly no one agrees with you on? Pro: A great tool for distinguishing your unique strength from million other passionate people.
Challenge: For some, the answer that came to their mind was ‘nothing’ no matter if the actual reason was that they did not share the believe with others often enough, because their disagreements came in the form of not caring, because you were very assertive that nobody bothers to openly disagree with you, or simply because what you care about is not that unique or not presented in a unique enough form.
5. At your funeral
Your wandering soul stumbled upon your own commemoration book or tombstone. It was put together by everyone who matters in your life. Each of them wrote down their most sincere reflection of how you matter to them. What are the words you wish will appear?
Pro : By getting yourself out of the picture, it becomes easier to seek the cause or the people you truly wish to serve. Challenge: For some, the excessive concern of what people will thinks of you might distort your own genuine desire.
6. You just died
You just died, again. There is no more point to be concern about those pending works, those planned events, those unmet dream, those people, those vacations, and all those ‘when I have time” sort of things, because now you just don’t. What would you regret? What would you wish, that if…if only you get to go back there, you would really do it this time. Pro: Allow you to look pass all the lure of life and focus on what is really important to you. Challenge: It does require good imagination, the more realistic your imagination become, the easier it becomes.
7. One thing forever
Contrary to the previous approach, in this case you were blessed (or cursed) with immortality. Yay! However, the only condition is that you will have to try to do something repeatedly every single day…forever. You were allowed to choose what activity would be repeated, but you will have no control over the situation or anybody else. Also, the boredom, the pain, and the misfortunes will still be very real, but you will just survive to face it again some other day. (Alternative form : What would you do if you can never retire?)
Pro: The repetition will force you to prioritize and the eternity will nullify the excuse of you being too old or too young.   Challenge: It is easy to mix up ‘having to try to do something every day’ and ‘getting to do something every day. The first one is like winning a lottery every day while the second is buying the lottery every day, even when you have no money.
8. The successful you vs. the failed you
The successful you
You woke up to find that you have somehow become the richest, best-connected, and the most talented person ever lived. Basically, you are capable of achieving anything you ever want, and the best part is that you are guaranteed to remain so for the rest of your life.  After a day of unbelieving, a week of verifying the fact, another week of being in shock, and a few years of spoiling yourself until all imaginable pleasure became extremely dull…how will you spend your remaining life? When you already have everything, what is something that is actually meaningful to you?
The failed you
In a parallel universe, you are such a complete failure that whatever you do will fail, no matter how hard you try. The only choice you literally have is to choose what kind of thing you would spend your time doing knowing that the only pleasure you can ever experience is the process of getting to do it.   (Alternative form: What will do if all jobs in the world have the exact same benefits?)
Pro: When other factors don’t matter anymore, you reclaim your freedom to choose what you stand for. Challenge: In some case, it can be unconsciously challenging to overcome the pursuit of typical self pleasure in case of ‘The sucessful you’ or be overwhelm with despair and do nothing in case of ‘The failed you’
9. What will you teach?
Not all of us is a teacher, at least professionally. However, one day you are up on the stage and you are obliged to either teach a subject or preach a topic for 3 hours. What would be your choice?
Pro :  We tend to pick the topic that matter to us most or that we have most confident in when we teach others. Challenges : For some people, they are just so good with impromptu act that it will be hard to determine their core aspiration.
10.You try, learn, and try again
At the end of the day, all we can get from any approach to our aspiration are rough ideas. And whatever those maybe, the only way to truly verify them is to move them from your thoughts to your action. Pick a few most likely ones, try them, fail and succeed with them. None of it will take you to ‘the’ destination, but every effort you give will surely get you moving.

Many people associate high-performing individuals – such as successful CEOs – with traits like extreme productivity or sublime organizational skills. But there’s another distinguishing habit that may come as a surprise to you: positivity. Keep your chin up Data shows that even though high performers face similar life challenges to everyone else, they tend to be more cheerful and positive than their peers. They deliberately avoid negative thinking and focus on the good, which helps them lead happier emotional lives and harness more mental energy. To get yourself into this habit, a simple trick is to take a moment each morning to ask yourself what you have to look forward to in the day ahead. Maybe you’re having lunch with a friend, wrapping up a big project at work or watching a movie in the evening, for instance. Neuroscientists believe that anticipating positive events releases as much dopamine – the hormone associated with happiness – as experiencing the event itself, so by doing this, you’re getting double the happiness from the same event! . . . . . . . #howtofindyourpassion #dailymotivation #success #takeaction #montreal #rohanshah #love #hardwork #motivation #fitness #hustle #grind #happy #entrepreneur #quotes #productivity #passion #belikenick #justdoit #selfdiscovery #noexcuses #mentalhealth #psychology #successquotes #inspiration #inspirational #inspirationalquotes #motivational #life #lifestyle (at New York, New York)

2018 is around the corner. Make sure you go into the new year with the following: This is your life. Do what you want and do it often. If you don't like something, change it. If you don't like your job, quit. If you don't have enough time, stop watching TV. If you are looking for the love of your life, stop; they will be waiting for you when you start doing things you love. Stop over-analysing, life is simple. All emotions are beautiful. When you eat, appreciate every last bite. Life is simple. Open your heart, mind and arms to new things and people, we are united in our differences. Ask the next person you see what their passion is and share your inspiring dream with them. Travel often; getting lost will help you find yourself. Some opportunities only come once, seize them. Life is about the people you meet and the things you create with them, so go out and start creating. Life is short, live your dream and wear your passion. #howtofindyourpassion #dailymotivation #success #takeaction #montreal #rohanshah #love #hardwork #motivation #fitness #hustle #grind #happy #entrepreneur #quotes #productivity #passion #belikenick #justdoit #selfdiscovery #noexcuses #mentalhealth #psychology #successquotes #inspiration #inspirational #inspirationalquotes #motivational #life #lifestyle (at New York, New York)
