I bought this yesterday and it's so cute and adorable! It's packed with tips on how to relax your mind and body. Plus it's filled with beautiful illustrations and positive affirmations throughout. This is perfect for anyone who would like something that is accessible and helpful without having to read through difficult jargon and it helps that it is a pretty book to look through! Check it out!

How to maintain Calm in the City.
By 2050 70% of all human life will be urban.  With the bustle of life lived in overcrowded metropolis’ with a minimum possibility for space or silence it may seem more and more challenging to find and maintain calm in our lives.
It may seem hard to apply calm decision making, to have clarity of thought with enough space to think. Even when we are at rest we process the sounds of traffic, of crowds, the earth beneath us wattles with trains, the air above us thick with passing passenger aircrafts… how can we remain calm, stay in control, and be clear in our thoughts in this environment?
Fear not, for it is certainly possible, the future may even rely on it.
Like perhaps many of you I began my day in a rush, before I had engaged my thinking mind I found myself dressed, washed and standing in a full -to -capacity carriage listening to the baseline of three fellow passenger’s earphones, a conversation in a foreign language on a mobile and a small child. I had space for one arm and one leg to be comfortable while the other limbs were pressed against strangers. I was aware of my bag a) not being in the way b) not being stolen c) not looking like a bomb threat. I’d read 30- odd advertisements asking me to consider the bees and the homeless, vitamin pills, sperm banks and hair treatments, consider degrees I cannot afford to study, to buy a bed and to decide which side of a debate I stood on. I’d already run for closing doors and been pushed on a train  by people behind me eager not to be late for work before I’d even noticed I was awake and hungry.
By the time I engage my conscience mind in the morning I have already registered the faces of countless strangers, ingested thousands of pounds worth of advertising, glimpsed the headlines in a free newspaper, and exercised physical exertion. Soon I will be asked to mind the gap, told that the next train is a minute away, asked to remove my bag from the doors, engage in the unspoken train-games of shuffling towards seats, noticing nice shoes, making snap judgments, avoiding wondering eyes, reading headlines over shoulders etc. We all know the drill.
This will be followed by a round of coffee and “hello’s” at work followed by hours of email correspondence, news checking, telephone calls, queues at lunchtime, orders, negotiations, more news checking, more email correspondence, texting, tweeting, liking, updating, posting, wishing of happy birthday, reading.
If I go to a shop the queue will be long, the store will be crowded, if I go to the gym the classes will be full and the gym will be crowded, when I go home the house will be full and the neighbours live close enough to be heard. People will text me, people will tweet me. When I go to the supermarket I see no one I know and no one will see me. I’ll do some more texting, some more tweeting and some more liking and will likely read a book standing up on the way home, etc. Ok so its not that bleak, but you know what I’m talking about.
  Information overload!
Minimum space, maximum people.
Short life, too much to do.
Must- achieve.
My life moves very fast while I sit still. Just to stay in the same place I need to check my emails and the news every half an hour. To stay on trend I need to change my shoes every month (ok so exaggeration is all part of the chaotic city beat).
How  (or where) am I to find space in this way of life? Without the marvel of an abandoned hilltop, a running stream where do I find tranquility? With the constant anxiety around me how do I escape it and become tranquil? Is this even desirable anymore? Won’t a calm and unassuming person get trampled in the dog- eat-dog jungle of the city?
Drawing on my philosophical education (yes I am over educated and under paid) the Stoics taught me that like a slave I will always own the space inside my own head. There I can create my own garden of calm and tranquility. This is easier said than done in the information age, but I like the concept.  The practice of mindfulness may help me to achieve some of what they were talking about. Mindfulness is a way of acting which encourages us to stop and notice things, things in relation to each other, in relation to ourselves.
Flow activities may help me to concentrate the mind; reading (real reading not snip bits), playing music, painting, for example, anything that engages my whole being and doesn’t allow for distractions, any activity in which I am not checking the time… maybe writing a blog post (yes dear reader).
Even on a crowded underground tube stuck in a tunnel I can notice what is going on inside my own head, in my own body, feel the touch of air and clothes on my own skin, process and identify the thoughts passing through my own mind.
Even in an air-polluted city I can surrender myself to things that are larger than me, the stars, when visible can help me to go beyond calm and surrender  myself to these things that are larger than me. Leaves, water, snow; they may be inconvenient (especially to the train people), but they remind me of my own size and (un)importance on this planet. This is a comfort.
Silence may elude us in the city, it may be captured in the odd -moment in a park or in the garden, if you have one (I do, I will think of bees). But internal silence will help, stopping the thoughts, the internal dialogue (or music, sometimes my brain is already playing on shuffle from my I tunes library before I’ve even plugged in the headphones- scary). Switching off that noise will really help. There is nothing we can do to stop the airoplanes, the white noise, the city noise, but the internal noise is all our own. If we quiet these noises we can engage with our deep-selves and find calm.
Perfectionism can also make calm illusive. Self-berating and criticism can make calm illusive. Rushing and spreading ourselves too thinly can make calm illusive, not noticing can make calm illusive. Worrying and lists can make calm illusive.
To cultivate calm in the city we must work on two relationships; that which we have with ourselves and that which we have with the world. The two most fundamental of relationships, but two that we so frequently neglect.
We seem to have created a culture in which we pride ourselves on how busy we are, not what we achieve, or how happy we are, but purely how jam-packed our lives are. The existential angst seeping through the cracks “I’ve made my life count, for I am BUSY, REALLY BUSY”.
But is calm desirable? Is it? Yes of course it is people, of course it is.
Calm does not need to mean being passive, being dreamy, calm will help us to recognise (calmly) the routs of our anxieties and address them. Calm will help us to (calmly) think through problems and make decisions. Calm will allow us to (calmly) listen to and engage with our true –selves and with other people. Calm will help us to (calmly) live in the grandeur of both the man-made city and the natural world, helping us to give ourselves over to forces that are larger and more powerful than us (no I’m not a religious, but trees and stars are bigger than me).
Being Calm helped me engage with
Cool And Lovely Me.
( Note to self: Next class to attend “How to be cool”)
