I just want to say that I love Esther Finch and she is a great villain but she is sooooooo sinister. I don't think enough people realize how terrible she truly is beacuse we mostly see her as a somewhat campy villain. Which she is but she is also so much more.
To start with she goes after Becky Aspen, a little black girl, and, well, Becky is a very vulnerable person because of it. The police and even other (white) people will be less likely to look for her because she is black. I wouldn't be surprised that the police did very little to look into her disappearance. And Esther isn't a stupid woman, she most likely went after Becky because she uses the systemic issues in place that make it easier for her to go after vulnerable girls, such as Becky Aspen.
Not to mention that the police wouldn't have gone after her anyways because she is friendly with them and they are friendly with her. She talks to them like a friend and the police treat her like one. And it's easy for Esther to do because she is a wealthy white woman, why would she be the cause of such a horrible tragedy? She is trust worthy and our friend so of course this wealthy white woman is not the kidnapper/killer. Because she is a wealthy white woman.
More under the cut
The police also show their incompetence/bias in the show by dismissing Crystal and Niko during the Lighthouse Leapers, because they are 1) outsiders in this town 2) are renting at Jenny's so they must be poor 3) not at school so they must be high/on drugs and 4) woman of color, while not mentioned, is something that most likely played a factor in the cops decision to not believe them.
The cop also immediately runs into Esther, who further turns the cop against Crystal and Niko. Esther takes advantage of her position in society, especially to those who are beneath her, to have power and control over them.
And the police will not side with her victims because it is her words over theirs and her word carries far more weight than those of her victims.
After all, Esther Finch is such a poor wealthy white woman and she is so sinister because it reflects our reality of how we (western) society view wealthy white woman.

Things about X-Men series I still hate:
Moira MacTaggert's entire existence. Possibly one of the worst cases of no homo I've seen in modern day. (Especially freaking ridiculous because First Class was written as a tragic love story between Charles and Erik, not Charles and her - fucking hell, they looked barely into each other in both of these films. Infuriating.)
Mystique's arc after DoFP, she was mostly just annoying and self righteous, despite really not having the moral high ground for it. Placed there just to bitch at Charles, which is beyond infuriating. Also the way she makes no effort to meet Charles' half way (I mean, maybe she's essentially making up with attitude for being raised by him)
Charles arc in Dark Phoenix, bullshit, nonsensical, I'm not having it, just no. Also the whole costume department that movie, atrocious, just no. In fact, I'm just blocking it from my brain entirely. (Except for the general feel any Cherik moments, which are always good)
Erik's family in Apocalypse are fine, but underutilized. I like them, but honestly feel like, idk, could have been written better.
More emphasis on Apocalypse persuasion (which likely meddled with all his "underlings" actual emotions and thought processes). Generally leaning into the monster arc.
Pointless deaths: Darwin, Scott, Alex. (As much as it hurts, the ones with some sense like: Jean, Sean, Charles, Emma, etc. make sense to me)
Raven/Hank's love arcs after DoFP, listen, it's over, they're no Cherik, we should have dropped that like a hot potato.
Peter not getting to tell Erik he's his son. Like, come on. Or even having any relationship with him??
Alex not being Scott's father. It's ridiculous that he's his brother. Like, I get there are people with siblings that are way older than them, but it kinda feeds into the ridiculous aspect of the movie where no one really ages.
In general, wish Alex had more time with Charles in these movies, and additional focus on Charles being a father figure to the OG crew as well as the new crew.
Y'all, I'm probably forgetting some stuff, but GOD, makes the movies slightly frustrating to watch, despite them being my favorites (Except for Dark Phoenix, literally fuck you)

i'm not that big on the nickname, but I you talked about fans treating "everything in his career will be meaningless until that's achieved / seem to believe he's wasting his career now / see everything that's not championship P1 as a utter failure" I feel like part of that is just chirlies having... fear. Like, what if Ferrari just never gets their shit together? What if the car is never good enough for long enough of the season to clinch the wdc? If/when he finally wins the wdc, a lot of chirlies will be even more annoying (not derrogatory, i love yall) but also, a lot will finally chillax
Oh yeah I don't doubt that, it's just not how EYE personally enjoy sport, u know? Like, I don't think it's all or nothing. I don't think narratives that don't end in crushing victory aren't meaningless. And I get the feeling that some think the emphasis on the predestined nickname TO ME ties into that way of engaging with sports narratives. I'm just like, idc what he's predestined to do, this isn't a fantasy novel, or a career retrospective. I care about what he's doing now!
But again I GET IT it's catchy and cool as fuck, people can enjoy things! It's just not something I'm drawn to

I only think lando is capable of change if people stopped treating him like a baby and I can’t see that happening any time soon. The way some people have been moving over this is mental and part of the reason why lando constantly finds himself in situations like that.
The only way I feel he can change is if people started treating him the way he should be treated and it’s not happening with how people baby him.
Oh, exactly, that’s what I mean!
Like the same system that forces pocs to always be better keeps white people of a certain demographic (conventionally attractive, able bodied, not poor) stupid cause why should I change if everyone always agrees with me and no one ever expects me to do better?
Idk, I’m obviously biased but I do think it’s the difference between Seb and some other drivers like I think he was always just as vocally hated as he was loved and it meant he also had to grow and do better several times (he’s very much not perfect but he’s done better than most imo)

Shadows of Fear: Did You Lock Up? (1.1, Thames, 1970)
"And they didn't make much mess?"
"No, not really. They forced that door. Smashed the cabinet, slashed a sofa. And kicked a hole in the bedroom door."
"Ah. Big mistake."
"What is?"
"Never lock inside doors. Anything you can to keep them out - but when they're in, let 'em get on with it."
"I'll remember."
#shadows of fear#single play#roger marshall#1970#classic tv#thames#kim mills#michael craig#gwen watford#ray smith#mark mcmanus#malcolm kaye#charles leno#having come to something of a premature pause in my New Scotland Yard watch (the first ep of series 3 isn't on the YT playlist I've been#using and is proving quite tricky to get ahold of) i thought I'd revisit this brief lived anthology series for the creepy season. i first#watched this about 10 years ago and my memories of it are scant to say the least‚ so it seemed like good viewing for the season#the production history of SoF is lost in the mists of time (unless someone out there wishes to enlighten me?); this first episode was shown#in June of 1970‚ but the rest didn't follow until January of the following year; probably this acted as a sort of pilot to gauge viewer#reactions to another vaguely horrorish anthology series (the previous decade had been ripe with them‚ tho we rarely see their like today)#and then there's the odd case of the final ep‚ shown almost 2 years after the series ended and running to half the length (and generally#feeling like an entirely different format) but I'll come to that when (and if) i get to the episode itself. this debut ep is... well it's#fine. i was excited to see Marshall's name in the opening credits‚ one of the most dependable of old tv writers and I'd quite forgotten he#contributed to this show. but the issue here is simply one of length. the plot is solid‚ a suitably grotty little tale of a family man's#mounting obsession with the burglars who broke into his home. it would make a good ep of Tales of Unease (shortly to begin on Thames'#sister broadcaster LWT) or a few years later as an episode of Tales of the Unexpected; both being 25 minute shows. but this clocks in at#close to 50 mins and there isn't really enough to it to sustain that longer running time‚ leaving it feeling a little stretched thin and#flimsy. a shame‚ because Craig and Watford are putting in excellent performances as the middle class couple whose reactions to the burglary#slowly shift as time passes (he goes from prosaic acceptance to fixated malice‚ she from shocked indignation to making peace with it all)#no big surprises in where the play is headed or how it plays out‚ but that's often the case with these things; it's often just as much#about the horrible foreknowledge of what must come than some shocking twist‚ and this plays it about right. it's just too long is all.

It's the circle of... mechanics!
I can laugh about these pictures now, but was not amused before the race. So glad we got the Ferrari clowning out of the way before the race this time.

Absolutley no hate, i just wondering why you dont like Colonel Potter?
I was going to hold off on answering this until I had time to write something properly, but a) the chances of me feeling like I ever have that time are slim and b) I realised if I really Got Into It the answer would be long and winding and UTTERLY boring. So I tried to wrap it up lmao.
Just to be clear, for me there are two main ways to 'like' a character? There is liking them as if they were a real person - reckon you'd get on with them in real life maybe - and then there is liking them as a character, finding them entertaining or useful within the narrative.
I don't like Potter as a person. And on some level, I do like Potter in the latter way... Harry Morgan is excellent and regularly makes me properly laugh, which is what you want from a sitcom character, and I think he achieves what he is meant to achieve in the story, he fulfills his role. I just don't like his role.
For me, Potter represents a lot of what I don't like about the messaging of the post s3 show in regards to the military - namely the sort of milquetoast "some good army" idea, the way it is painted as being full of 'good eggs' without enough disection of what that means. He is also used as a character that upholds a lot of the less progressive ideas in the show, without much challenge, and while it's useful to push the sitcom plots along... well. It doesn't half piss me off.
Ultimately though this sort of thing is often putting a reason to a feeling rather than the other way round, and there are other characters that I have similar issues with that I like a lot more so I cannot discount just personal preference I guess!
