These are my scribbles from the very first session at YJA. We had met with Journalist Alain Tolhurst who had a talk with us about different types of stories, finding the right story, how to create a story and what sells a story as well as social media.
These are the basic structures that I had written down from our talk with Mr Tolhurst.
THE HOLY TRINITY
Find a story.
Create a story.
Promote a story.
TYPES OF STORIES
Public announcement/press conference
Court/Police.Fire news.
Anonymous Tip Off.
Journalist sources.
Investigative work.
Data mining / Freedom of Information.
Social Media.
Breaking News.
Follow Up/Reaction.
Opinion.
In Depth Analysis.
Background.
Timeline.
In Pictures.
Interviews.
CREATING A STORY
Intro, 3 paragraphs telling the story (we were told that is the first 3 paragraphs do not explain the story, that we have already lost the readers.)
Don't bury the lead.
6 W's - WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, WHY & hoW
No repetition.
Snappy headlines, intro less than 25 words.
WHAT SELLS A STORY
Quotes (the more exclusive, the better).
Analysis - your own or from experts.
Figures - data Journalism.
DIGITAL VISUALS - Pictures, videos, GIFS...
PROMOTING A STORY
A lot more publications focusing on plugging their work, this is more important than ever.
Front Page.
Placement within papers (articles on the right hand side tend to be read more than other parts of the newspapers).
Teasers.
Billboards.
SOCIAL MEDIA
How to spread things on twitter?
Who ha power?
How can you use it?
What makes a good tweet?
What do people like on Facebook?
Do newspapers act differently on social media?
