PTE Speaking - Tips & Tricks
Tumblr media
Avoid Speaking Too Quickly
Speak Distinctly & Loudly
Pay Attention To Your Pronunciation
Sound Natural
Avoid Long Pauses
It's a machine, and you have to improvise your preparation accordingly to make sure the algorithm hears you. Follow these tips to know how to:
1.  Avoid Speaking Too Quickly
Try to have a speaking speed that you can maintain for the entire duration of the test. Remember, it is an internet-based test, and therefore, your input is essential, and it's a machine that will be listening to you. Speak too fast, and you risk confusing the algorithm, which may not pick everything you say. Get PTE certificate online
Try and cover all the significant points instead of trying to address every single point you may have identified in the graph. The conclusion is as important as the points you are making. Don't get cut off before you can finish. Emphasize on quality and not quantity. It Sounds natural. Don't rush through. Emulate good quality news reading, public speaking etc. That's the speed level to go by!
2. Speak Distinctly & Loudly
Again, if the machine doesn't hear you, it wouldn't mark you. Remember PTE test centers are going to be noisy with test-takers trying to speak into the microphone in hushed tones, to appear to be avoiding disturbing others around them, who are also taking the test. But, this civility you extend does not help the computer in hearing you distinctly. You have to speak loudly and distinctly into the microphone. Further, there is also a possibility that you may get distracted by the noisy environment. One smart way to practice for this chaotic environment is to have a radio playing in the backdrop while you practice speaking for the PTE test. Obtain genuine IELTS certificate online.
3. Pay Attention To Your Pronunciation
In day to day life, when speaking English, we often blend words together. For example: "We have got to do this" becomes "Wiv gotta do dis". In the PTE exam, this is far from acceptable. When practicing, pay attention to every single phoneme, and make sure you pronounce them correctly. Make sure the words are not bundled together when you speak into the microphone. Do remember to record while practicing, and then go over the recordings after you are done to review your performance. Get PMP certification online
4. Sound Natural
Try to strike out a balance between speaking too quickly and speaking like a robot. Pronounce the words clearly, enunciate well, and maintain a natural flow of pronunciation. Keep it real, and practice well.
5. Avoid Long Pauses
Yes, the 'aahs' and the 'uhms'. In day-to-day conversation, this is perfectly acceptable, but not in the PTE. People generally say gibberish like 'aahs' and 'uhms' when they are buying time to think of what to say next. The solution is to slow down and think about what you are going to say next. This means speaking mindfully, if not consciously. This is, of course, a hard skill to master. So you have to get a lot of practice and record yourself while speaking.
If you follow the above strategies, and get adequate practice, acing the Speaking section will only be a matter of time. If you are looking for more expert help, we can provide that to you too.
At PTE Tutorials, we have a stellar track record of having helped thousands of test-takers achieve their desired score in the PTE exam. If you need any assistance in improving your score, we have just the right resources to help you do that: PTE speaking practice tests, PTE speaking material, pte speaking 'Read Aloud' practice materials. If you are too busy to go for face-to-face coaching, you can opt to go for PTE preparation online.

one (1) person said yes so I’m doing it
stick’s spoken language was actually reverse engineered from human writing. for humans, our language developed from spoken -> written, but for sticks it was the other way around. sticks were created in such a way that they know their creator’s home language* … but only through the form of writing.
sticks, for a long time, couldn’t hear humans. microphones were ass if they were even on. and I like to headcanon that sticks can talk, but humans can’t hear them either. and even if they COULD sticks have an entirely different internal biology that can’t mimic most of the sounds a human could make, and vice versa.
so when sticks eventually escaped into the outernet and started building their own civilization, they had to essentially work backwards. It started as just assigning sounds to the letters, but as sticks from various parts of the world found their way to cities and used different human languages, it grew beyond that. different sentence structures, word types, etc were all implemented into their new conglomerate. This continued to get even more complicated as sticks reproduced and over the course of generations stopped fundamentally knowing a language upon birth.
there is one “main” language in the outernet, but you’ll almost never find two sticks who speak it in the exact same way. It’s mostly organized by location, but people move and things change. dialects vary wildly. their writing system uses the IPA but since they didn’t know what the letters actually sounded like for the longest while it’s pronounced very differently from how we would.
But like we teach foreign language in school, sticks can also learn “the human languages” in case they ever need to interact with one. It’s just the writing system they learn, not the pronunciation, since that’s entirely different. one of the first phrases they learn is “can you type back to me? I can’t hear you.” it’s not UNHEARD of for sticks to learn the pronunciation, especially if they live with humans who talk into high quality mics, but it’s uncommon and not in schools.
*it’s not automatic, just the language they are written in. not the coding language but like. you can code in English yk. If a stick is coded in English it knows English okay.

if you’re open for regular requests i’d love to request lil scenarios of the boys learning english alongside their english-speaking s/o! this is totally self-indulgent i’m doing the TEFL program and i’m going to south korea next year to teach :)
first of all, that’s amazing omg!! congratulations my love, i hope you have the best time over there and please don’t be shy in sharing your stories with us!!! i tried to stick to the boys actually learning english with their s/o but i strayed from that with a few members just bc i ran out of ideas lol but i hope you still enjoy!
fair warning....i’ve never ~seriously~ tried to learn korean, so i’m not entirely certain of the parallels between korean and english. i just hope these are wholesome enough to override that lmao
namjoon:
“You know,” Namjoon looked up from his phone, “I understand expanding your vocabulary, but why are there so many weird slang words?”
“Kids these days?” You shrugged, the man chuckling in response before flipping his phone around to show you what had puzzled him.
“If something slaps, that’s...good?” He wondered, watching as you suppressed a smile at the tweet he was showing you.
You could tell by the profile picture that the user was an ARMY, one of the many fan profiles on the platform, and the tweet was written completely in English.
Although there was a ‘Translate to Korean’ option readily available with just a tap of his thumb, you knew Namjoon never missed an opportunity to challenge himself to be able to fully comprehend what a native English speaker was trying to say.
You nearly snorted at the tweet’s content, smiling as you read it out loud.
“The Dis-ease bridge just saved my life. Seriously, this song slaps.”
Glancing at Namjoon, he raised his eyebrows, eagerly waiting for you to translate and explain what that could equate to in Korean.
“It’s definitely a good thing, Joon. They love it.”
At your interpretation, Namjoon grinned, nodding to himself as he pulled his phone back in front of his face to scroll through more reaction tweets to the new album release.
seokjin:
“What the hell is that?”
You picked your head up from your sketchbook when you heard Seokjin whine from beside you, eyebrows knitting together at his distressed tone. Taking a glance over at his laptop screen, you found his mouse bouncing from letter to letter on one of his weekly english lessons.
“What is that, like 15 letters? How do you even use that in a sentence?” He went on, obviously flustered by the word on the screen.
Pulchritudinous.
You placed your hand over his to stop his panicked counting of the letters, causing him to look over at you with a sigh as he frowned.
You nearly giggled at his reaction, but the genuine fear in his eyes made you stifle it as you soothingly held his hands in yours.
“It’s just an over complicated way of saying beautiful. I don’t know why they’re teaching you that, nobody ever uses it.” You assured him, his eyes going down in size a bit at your words before he nodded.
Watching as a smirk tilted his lips, you raised your brows at the sudden expression.
“What?”
“Well like, I could say I’m...that?” He said, eyebrows raised cockily as he gestured to the long word stretched across the screen.
“Well it’s actually not used like,” you paused, giving in with a shrug as you grinned back at him.
“Sure, love.”
yoongi:
“Why did I skip English class all the time?” Yoongi sighed, pinching his bottom lip between his fingers as he plucked at the skin in frustration.
“Because you were trying to be a rebel.” You answered without looking up from your phone, the man obviously not liking your answer as he reached over to where you were laying beside him to pinch at your hip.
Yelping, you scooted across the mattress to get away from his hand, whining his name with a scoff before looking over at his notepad.
“What are you doing, anyway?” You asked, leaning on your palm as you scanned the rows of scribbled English letters written on the page.
“I’m trying to get better at writing.” He admitted shyly, a small grin on his face to match the fond one on your own.
“Aw,” you pouted, Yoongi raising his eyebrows at your tone, “but I like your chicken scratch.”
“You’re such a brat.” He chuckled, adjusting the velcro on his brace with a grunt.
Since Yoongi’s shoulder surgery took away obvious straining activities like dancing and performing, he’d turned to studying English from the comfort of your bed during his recovery as one of the only safe activities he could partake in for a while.
It was now one of his favorite past times, learning new words and phrases he could potentially use in the future. It worked for you both because it took his mind off the pain and kept him motivated, and since you could speak both his and your language, you could help him out whenever he got stuck on something.
Usually he did lessons verbally on his phone, but it seemed today he had taken the old fashioned route.
“Your handwriting really isn’t bad, Yoongs.” You observed, the carefully placed tails at the end of each ‘a’ making you smile out of fondness for the man.
“My man has the prettiest handwriting.” You cooed, pushing a strand of his stark black hair out of his eyes as he blushed down at his notebook.
“Stop that.”
hoseok:
“Hey, babe?” Hoseok called for you, listening to your footsteps growing closer before you popped your head into the kitchen doorway.
“Yeah?”
“I’m having a little trouble.” He gestured to his open laptop on the counter, you recognizing it as an assignment from his English course.
“What happened?”
“Pronouns. Pronouns happened.” He pouted, his disdain for the new chapter quite obvious as he stared down his computer screen.
“What about them?” You asked, stepping closer to the man sitting at the kitchen island and placing a reassuring hand on his shoulder.
“I need to make ten sentences using proper pronouns and I feel like I’m doing it all wrong.” He explained, causing you to hum as you looked over his sentences.
“These look great, Hobi.” You smiled as you glanced over the first three he’d written, flawlessly executed on the document.
“Can you help me with the next one?” He wondered, you nodding your head as you took a seat on the stool next to his.
“What do you want the next one to say?” You asked, watching as he glanced off to the side in thought, slightly squinting his eyes at the tile floor beneath the sink.
“My house is next to,” He spoke in English, pausing as he searched his brain for what pronoun to put next.
“Theys?” He answered as more of a question, then shaking his head as he switched back to Korean, “wait, no.” He sighed, placing his chin in his hand in thought before glancing over to you.
“I know it’s wrong, I just don’t know what the right answer is instead.” He explained, you shooting him a loving smile as you pushed the dark raven hair off his forehead and pressed a kiss to the newly revealed skin.
“I’ll help you, Sunshine. No worries.”
jimin:
Flopping onto the bed, you let your tired body fall on top of Jimin’s hoodie clad chest, his arm encircling your body as he mumbled a soft greeting to you.
“Hm, what are you learning about today?” You nuzzled into his chest, peering at his phone propped up on his thigh.
“Animals. Birds, mostly.” He answered, briefly turning from the screen to press a kiss to your head before focusing back on the row of English words matched with pictures of popular birds glowing from the device.
The first was a robin, the next a blue jay, and then a dove.
You listened as the virtual instructor prompted Jimin to repeat after her, spelling out the letters before stating the whole word. You smiled as your boyfriend followed instruction, pronouncing the words the best he could after the microphone chimed for him to do so.
“D-o-v-e. Dove.”
“Dove.” He repeated, smiling to himself as the app announced he got the point with a little heart.
“That’s cute.” He went back to his native language, you humming in confusion as you lifted your head up off his chest to look at him.
“The heart?” You asked, reaching up to twist a stray strand of hair out of his eye as he shook his head.
“Dove.” He said again, making you tilt your head, not knowing what he meant.
“It sounds like ‘love.’” He connected the two English words, you smiling fondly at him in response before scooting up the bed to kiss the tip of his button nose.
“You’re so cute.”
taehyung:
Three knocks at the door announced someone’s arrival to your bedroom, causing your head to lift from the novel you’d been so immersed in. Taehyung was home, but you’d wanted to give him space because you knew he needed to work on lyrics for his mixtape in order to submit them on time.
“Hey,” he poked his head in with a small smile, “can you help me with something?” He asked sheepishly, stepping further into the room when you nodded.
“Of course. What is it?” You set your book down, marking your place before closing it to pay full attention to your boyfriend.
“Well, I’m trying to write this verse in English and,” he trailed off with a shrug, “you know.” He finished, you nodding in response with a gesture for him to come sit next to you.
He eagerly walked over to you with his notebook in hand, lowering himself to the mattress before rolling his way over to where you were leaning against the headboard.
Honestly, Taehyung’s English wasn’t bad at all. He was insecure about it, but you’d never really understood what the reason for that feeling was. His vocabulary was more than decent, his comprehension was good, and his pronunciation was great for having such a thick accent.
But there were many times where Taehyung came to you for guidance, as you were a native English speaker yourself.
And so, as he rested his head on your shoulder confiding in you about everything he wanted to say and how he wanted to say it, you patiently took him through what would work and rhyme best, smiling as he hummed the melody to himself to see if the phrases would work in his creation.
jungkook:
“Baby, can you read it to me again before we go on? Just one more time.”
You glanced over at your boyfriend in his makeup chair, several employees bustling around the man as they attempted to get him ready to go on stage while they had him seated.
With his arm extended backward to where you stood behind his leather chair, he offered his phone to you while shooting you a grin through the reflection in the mirror.
Taking the device from his hand, you opened it to the notes app where he’d written what he wanted to say in his statement on stage in just a few minutes.
You were in London tonight, which meant that all of the boys had been rehearsing their English so that they could communicate easier with their audience.
Jungkook, ever the over-achiever, was determined to do the toughest English tongue twister he could possibly find. Not only that, but in a British accent for his British ARMY’s.
“Betty bought a bit of better butter to make her bitter butter better.” You read from the phone, barely able to read the sentence yourself before you glanced up at Jungkook through the mirror again.
You watched your boyfriend nod as his brain took in the words you’d just said, taking a deep inhale before he began speaking the phrase back to you.
You gawked as the man effortlessly repeated after you, a few of the makeup artists stopping as well as Jungkook raised his eyebrows back at you.
“Was that okay?”

I have learned while working on the Killer and Healer rewrite that my two friends are the DeepL Translator website and the Linguanaut Chinese Alphabet - Pinyin Characters.  Seriously, the DeepL Translator website is FAR superior to google translate (anything is superior to google translate, lbr) and the Chinese Alphabet - Pinyin characters is great because it 1) literally has ALL the chinese characters, in alphabetical order by pinyin pronunciation and 2) has the character, how it’s spelled, and the tone that the character is pronounced in.
I love these both because the MangoTV subs can be a little...wonky, in English (like it’s not bad, but sometimes you’re just like...that sentence makes no god damn sense).  But with these two things, it’s very easy for me to translate the sentences into better sentences (or sentences that read better in English).  Also, the Notes app speech to text feature is super helpful when I need to try and copy the chinese into the DeepL translate box.  Like, I can just turn up the volume on my laptop, push the little microphone and have it capture the sentence in chinese for me to copy and paste into the text box.  It’s wonderful.
But yeah, these two things have really made working on the rewrite a lot easier

Alastor’s accent and the Golden Age of American radio
I really adore Alastor’s character so far. That eccentric strawberry dandy is just dripping with a slightly sinister sort of genteel charm. But I particularly love his accent/affectation. That over-enunciated ‘old time radio’ voice is a very specific style of speaking with an interesting history that I think adds a lot of richness to his character.
If you’ve ever wanted to know about where Alastor’s accent comes from then grab some tea, settle in, and read on! I am a huge history nerd, my first job was in radio, and I can write for days when I’m in the mood.
Alastor’s speaking style is based on the Trans-Atlantic accent. This accent is also called the Mid-Atlantic accent (as in ‘middle of the Atlantic ocean’, not the Mid-Atlantic region of the US). It is an invented style of speaking that combines elements of British English with American English to create a hybrid accent with no geographical roots. This faux British style of speaking was extremely popular among the American upper-class in the first half of the 20th century. Wealthy Americans were imitating elements of aristocratic British speech as far back as the 1800′s. By the end of the 19th century, this learned affectation was increasingly associated with East Coast urban elites.
About the same time, this style was also becoming popular in both formal public speaking and the theater. Regional American accents were not desirable so serious aspiring actors trained to imitate British speech on stage. Many stage actors during the early 1900′s embraced the works of phoneticians like William Tilly who wanted to create a universal standard of class based English. Tilly and his followers heavily promoted the teaching of this invented style of ‘proper’ American English pronunciation. Private New England preparatory schools in particular embraced this form of English instruction.
Some elements of the Trans-Atlantic accent include:
Lack of rhoticity (means you tend to drop the “R” at the end of words).
Soft vowels. Example: The A in Dance pronounced as ‘ah’ and not like ‘ant’.
Sharp, clipped emphasis on the “T”. American English frequently softens “T” into a “D” sound. Hit that T like it owes you money.
So... how did a sound associated with East Coast urban elites and high culture become synonymous with the Golden Age of radio?
Early audio technology was extremely primitive and radio broadcasting didn’t take off as a form of electronic mass media until the 1920′s. Prior to WW1, radio was dominated by hobbyists and amateurs experimenting with crude homemade equipment. Microphone technology was in it’s infancy and so was recording technology. Early radio experimenters were forced off the airwaves at the outbreak of WW1 to make room for military use; a major setback for the development of the technology.  The first radio stations didn’t become operational until 1920 and a commercial plug-in receiver with speakers wasn’t widely available until the late 1920′s. The first feature length movie featuring both sound and spoken audio wasn’t released until 1927 and it took about 4 years for Hollywood to complete the transition from silent films to ‘talkies’.
The biggest problem was that early microphones really struggled to pick up natural speaking voices and had a particularly hard time with base tones. Early receivers also lacked the ability to effectively reproduce natural base tones. One had to learn how to speak in a manner that could be captured and reproduced into something intelligible. The Trans-Atlantic accent with it’s clipped nasal pronunciation that elevated treble tones and strongly enunciated individual words was ideally suited to early radio technology. Performers were trained in this style of speaking and it formed the foundation for the classic ‘radio announcer’ sound of the era. That the accent was geographically neutral and associated with cultured respectability was also a plus. Microphone and radio receiver technology improved greatly by 1940 but by then the sound had become part of radio culture. Although you could now speak in a more natural voice, announcers continued to invoke the old affectation in order to sound like ‘real newsmen’. The Trans-Atlantic accent rapidly declined in use after WW2 due to continued technological advancements, an emerging middle class, changing social attitudes, and a decline in schools willing to teach it. In a relatively short time, it completely disappeared from every day use.
So there you have it. A little history about Alastor’s accent and where it fits into America’s Gilded Age and the Golden Age of radio. No one organically talks this way so Alastor would have had to deliberately learn this artificial style at some point in his life. His style of speaking also firmly dates him to the 1930′s. Lastly, the fact that his speech sounds like it is being played through an old radio receiver is super cool.
That’s enough of my sleep deprived word dumps for one night.

I know. When you start learning a new language, you immediately want to get the pronunciation perfect... Or is it just me? Okay. Well, even if you don't, I would like to give you some tips and tricks because they helped me SO MUCH, it's crazy.
No.1
Check the phonology (IPA) of the language. It saves you a lot of time, because that way you can actually compare the sounds to your native language or to other languages that you know.
After you have checked the IPA character for a given sound, you can just copy and paste it in youtube and you can hear and see how to pronounce it correctly. Usually, they tend to explain everything very clearly so it will be easier for you.
No.2
It's connected to the previous tip, but it's really important, and that is: tongue position, whether it's the resting position of your tongue (when you don't speak, because yeah, it can be different for every language) or its position when you pronounce sounds or complete words.
In fact, with tounge position comes the shape of the mouth but I think that might be easier considering that you can actually see someone's mouth when they are speaking. Well, in most cases.
No.3
This is probably the most known technique for pronunciation: mirroring. For this, you can take a video where you can see and hear them clearly and as they say the words or sentences you can mimic them. Yes, even the intonation and the stress on different syllables.
It's really a 'two birds with one stone' situation where you can improve your pronunciation and your listening skills at the same time.
No.4
The next thing can be quite weird at first but try the microphone on google translate or on any translating app that has an option of voice input. What you're going to do is select the language that you learn and, using the microphone, say the word/sentence that you're working on. If the app can recognize what you're saying and it's written correctly then yay, you know how to pronounce it right!
Recommended sites:
Glossika Phonics: a great YouTube channel that can show you every phonetic sound and the correct tongue and mouth position.
Wikipedia: You just have to type 'language + phonology' (ex. English phonology) and it can show you the pronunciation of nearly every language. The basics and the more advanced ones with general rules also.
Wiktionary: It's an online dictionary that has audios and phonetic writings for pronunciation and also pictures for showing the meanings. (Honestly, I never translate new words to my native language, I'd rather use pictures and illustrations so I can connect it to the meaning immediately.) Oh, and a good alternative can be WordReference.
forvo.com: Guys, it's BOMB. You can hear people's pronunciation who live in one of those countries that speaks the language and I think different accents are available, too.
All in all, I hope you can use these tips and I wish you a great learning journey. Don't give up, be consistent, even if you can only do 10 minutes that day, do it. But also, make sure you rest enough, don't overwork yourself. Well, it might be a general advice also.
See you soon~🥰

[ARTICLE] Monsta X Pushes Against Boundaries in ALL ABOUT LUV, K-Pop's First All-English Album in a Decade
The members of K-pop group Monsta X entered the interview room as though it were the set of a music video: fully hair-and-makeup-ready, some wearing clothes identical to the attire they wore in the video for one of their latest releases, “Middle of the Night.” Kihyun donned a checkered coat with bright yellow stripes and a green collar, Minhyuk a light brown coat with a dark tiger print. The group had just completed a Q&A on Facebook Live, after more than a week of non-stop interviews and meet-and-greets on both coasts of the U.S. The frenetic pace was par for the course for a K-pop act promoting a new album, though in this case, the group from South Korea had just released something a bit different: its first all-English album, ALL ABOUT LUV.
See full article here or read below.
ALL ABOUT LUV is the first all-English album released by a K-pop group in more than a decade — the last one was from trio JYJ in 2010. The new album quickly accomplished an impressive feat, ranking fifth on the Billboard 200 albums chart, making Monsta X only the third K-pop group, after BTS and SuperM, to break the top 10. Members Shownu, Minhyuk, Kihyun, Hyungwon, Joohoney, I.M and Wonho — who left the group near the end of last year — participated in the recording of the album, whose 11 tracks are uncharacteristically sensual and seductive for a K-pop act. A few days after the release, five of the six members of Monsta X sat down with TIME to discuss, at times via a translator, ALL ABOUT LUV, and the experience of both singing in English and speaking more frankly about what happens in the bedroom. (Rapper Joohoney is on a break, taking time to focus on his mental health due to anxiety, but will return for the group’s North American tour beginning in June.)
In the nearly five years since the group was formed in the reality competition show No.Mercy in 2015, Monsta X has carved a space in K-pop with EDM- and hip hop-heavy tracks paired with aggressive choreography. In 2019, the act began to shift gears in its sound. While continuing to release Korean albums with the same explosive energy, Monsta X dropped a number of tracks recorded in English, with a sleeker, smoother vibe. The rollout of these English-language songs led up to the release of ALL ABOUT LUV, which dropped on Valentine’s Day to the warm embrace of “Monbebes” — the name for the group’s fans, derived from the French term for “my baby.”
A new language introduces a new mode of expression
The group began working on ALL ABOUT LUV back in 2018, when they recorded “Besides U” featuring Pitbull, though “Who Do U Love?,” a collaboration with French Montana, would be the album’s first single. “At that time it was really difficult to record,” Kihyun, the main vocalist whose honeyed falsetto is a standout in the new album, tells TIME of working in English. “But it’s really comfortable now, every song.” A combination of speaking more English during stateside events, covering American pop songs — such as Bruno Mars’ “Versace on the Floor,” performed on a Korean television show in 2018 — and receiving help from youngest member I.M, who has lived in Boston and is fluent, has gradually increased the artists’ comfort working in the language.
Releasing an English album doesn’t just mean the words sound different. Vocalist Minhyuk describes a more technical difference in singing the two languages, which can lead to increased expressiveness. “When you speak Korean, there are lots of words that if you pronounce that word, your mouth is closed and it’s not really that smooth — it can sound a bit intense,” he says. “But when you are speaking English words, it goes with the flow. Word and word connects.” Minhyuk says the more flexible pronunciation helps him “give more emotions” to the English words. This can be heard, for instance, as he tenderly delivers the line, “I only feel alive when I don’t feel safe” from the new track “Misbehave.”
A laid-back, gentler approach to choreography
The emotions expressed in the new album, and the dances that accompany the songs, also mark a change from those of Monsta X’s past tracks. The group’s Korean music is known for its intensity — the latest title tracks “Follow” and “Alligator” are EDM-infused anthems whose choreography features fast-paced stomps, kicks and punches. In contrast, the numbers on ALL ABOUT LUV, as the album’s name suggests, share a laid-back mood expressed by soft and fluid dance moves. The performance for the new song “Middle of the Night” is filled with hip swaying, finger snapping and caressing of the microphone stand.
“In ALL ABOUT LUV, the whole album vibe is very moody and chill,” says leader Shownu, who is also the main dancer and has participated heavily in the group’s choreography. “We just wanted to match the dance moves with the songs.” The members contributed to shaping the routines of the new tracks. Shownu points to “Middle of the Night”: at the line, “we’re kissing in the car underneath of the night,” the idols tilt their microphone stands sideways and lean down as if to kiss them.
“Our Korean album performance and our ‘Middle of the Night’ performance are different types of sexy,” Minhyuk explains. “Korean album is…” he pauses as rapper I.M jumps in — “strong sexy.” “Yeah, strong and powerful,” Minhyuk agrees. Meanwhile, “Middle of the Night” has a “gentle” type of sexiness, Kihyun says.
‘Honest things happen on the bed’
But the sex appeal doesn’t only stem from the choreography. Throughout the album, lyrics making sexual references carry Monsta X into a beyond-PG-13, but not-quite-R-rated realm to which few K-pop acts have ventured.
In the track “Misbehave,” the chorus goes, “Love it when we mess this up, every time we argue, straight into the bedroom.” When asked about these lyrics, I.M says, “When you are loving somebody you need to be honest, and honest things happen on the bed.”
“What?!” Kihyun exclaims. “B-E-D? B-E-D?” Minhyuk asks, spelling out the word. “It’s about your imagination,” I.M responds, offering a laundry list of chaste activities. “We can just sleep, or just yawn…”
“Watch Netflix on bed,” vocalist Hyungwon, who has been mostly quiet up until now, chimes in. “Yeah, everyone has their own time on their bed,” I.M says. Kihyun fans himself. “Whew, I’m sweating!”
“Using the straightforward words, I thought it was very erotic,” Shownu says, using the Korean word yahada, which is also sometimes translated as “sexual.” “I felt shy,” Minhyuk shares about his recording experience.
Minhyuk reflected on the lyrics of “Love U,” a cheery electro-pop track suggestive of something more physical. The members sing, “I really, really wanna love you / But I can’t say the word I want to / ‘Cause they won’t play it on the radio / But I know you know / What I mean, what I mean.” It’s not hard to guess the word the lyrics suggest.
“When we were recording ‘Love U,’ I thought it was just a song about love,” Minhyuk explains. “But it went in a different direction.”
To be clear, the lyrics in All ABOUT LUV never explicitly mention sex. But compared to previous tracks in Monsta X’s discography — and, on a broader scale, most love songs across K-pop — the words are significantly more sexual. “It’s fine, we’re all adults.” Kihyun says, “and this is an American album.” If it were a Korean album, there would “maybe” be fewer of these references, he says. “The Korean society is more strict to lyrics.”
Pioneering a new sound
While the majority of K-pop tracks have a balanced distribution between singing and rapping — as most idol groups are formed with a mix of singers and rappers — ALL ABOUT LUV has significantly fewer rap verses. I.M and the group’s main rapper Joohoney, who boast some of the most dynamic rap delivery in the industry, tabled that specialty to record vocal-heavy sections. “I think I forgot how to rap by now,” I.M jokes.
“It was so funny,” Kihyun shares about Joohoney’s time in the studio. “Joohoney yelled at me, ‘Hyung, help me! I can’t do this,’” Kihyun says, referencing the Korean term for “older brother.” “The notes were so high to Joohoney, but he did it.” Indeed, Joohoney and I.M displayed their versatility across the album’s melodies, from the ad-libs in “Who Do U Love?” to the sultry introduction in “Middle of the Night.” In blurring the rap-vocal divide, the group is pioneering a new sound for Korean groups releasing music in the U.S.
“The Korean fans liked it because they saw a feeling they had never seen,” Hyungwon says. “The American fans liked it because it was fully in English.” Music from the album is already making its way into spaces where K-pop is rarely heard. On a recent episode of Riverdale, “Who Do U Love?” plays in the background. Elsewhere, fans have recorded hearing ALL ABOUT LUV tracks in stores from an H&M in Turkey to a Hollister in the U.K. When the group announced its North American tour taking place this summer, it became clear that Monsta X is returning to cities in venues much larger than the ones they performed in just a year ago, a testament to their rapid growth.
A few days before the Billboard 200 list was announced, TIME asked Monsta X how they will measure the success of ALL ABOUT LUV. Leader Shownu says he does not want to “get stuck inside of ‘success,’” and his teammate Kihyun offers a simple but emphatic response: “If we and our fans are satisfied with this album, that is good.”

NOTES: This article was originally posted on the 28th of January, 2017. This was when MAS 0094 (now ONEWE!) were properly starting off their careers in the music industry. The article (which is linked as the source) outlines interesting information about their predebut ventures so I decided to translate it if you wanted to know more about their prior activities in 2015! If you wanted to repost somewhere, you’re free to do so - but please take out with credit! There may be minor translation inaccuracies but the idea should remain the same throughout.
Kanghyun (Guitar), Dongmyeong (Vocals/Keyboard), Harin (Drums), Yonghoon (Vocals/Guitar), and CyA (Rap/Bass) are members of the band MAS 0094. The group, who released their first single in August 2015, focused on starting out through consistent busking performances instead of broadcasting activities.
2017 was their year to leap forward from that. Releasing their second mini album 'Make Some Noise' earlier this month, MAS 0094 has advanced to performing in various music stages, all the while showing off their intense skills to the fullest.
Composing a song for the victims of sexual slavery and performing for children with developmental disabilities, I sat down with MAS 0094, who is dubbed as a "concept band," to talk about their New Years resolutions and wishes.
-- Your team name is unique
DONGMYEONG: 'MAS' means MAKE A SOUND. The '0094' part refers to the the members that were born from 1994 to 2000 in that order. It's also always been a dream of ours to passionately perform various songs. Since it's hard for the fans to pronounce, we just ask them to call us 'MAS.'
-- There must have been a lot of episodes  [of pronunciation mishaps]
KANGHYUN: The numbers change when we go to events sometimes. There were foreign fans who were like 'Ah so they're called MASU 0094.' Others mistake the 00 (zero zero) as the letters OO in English.
DONGMYEONG: We met senior SHINee Jonghyun on a radio program and he said '[MAS 0094] looks like a jet plane name.' (laughs). Despite the occasional pronunciation mess ups, I'm pleased with the name since it's quite easy to remember.
-- I'm curious to know how you formed this team
KANGHYUN: We originally had three members. The three of us (Kanghyun, Harin, CyA) all went to the same academy and we matched quite well. But we didn't have a vocalist then - all we did was perform with instruments. As my interest in how the music of the band will transpire grew, we met CyA's close friend Dongmyeong.
HARIN: We met Yonghoon at a K-Pop contest at Suwon-si in 2015 where we went as part of a session. He showed off his amazing singing abilities and was awarded a grand prize. We immediately offered him a spot in our band after.
YONGHOON: I was in college at the time. The grand prize was one million won [roughly $850 USD] and I competed to earn the money. I never thought I would come across these guys. They were brave enough to offer me a position in their band, and at first, they were even playing hard to get (laughs). I found out that they were exceptionally talented so I decided to join them.
--In 2015, you released your first song called "Butterfly, Find the Flower." I heard this song was composed for the women who were forced into sexual slavery by Japanese militaries?
DONGMYEONG: That's right. CyA had that idea when he first learned about it in a WebToon. When we heard the story, the members thought about how we could offer our help to the victims.
KANGHYUN: We wanted to give the grandmothers happiness. So we gathered profits made from our busking activities and also found the time to volunteer at The House of Sharing*
[The House of Sharing is a nursing home for the “comfort women” (I do not recommend describing them as such since they’re ultimately victims, and this term seems to carry derogatory meaning with it, thus the quotation marks) who suffered through sexual slavery]
DONGMYEONG: We spent a year busking and then visited the grandmothers at The House of Sharing, and it was the first time we felt that we accomplished our goals. This is something that I won't forget for the rest of my life.
-- I heard you also did other kinds of volunteer work.
KANGHYUN: We also set up a performance for children with developmental disabilities not too long ago. We even met with the MC in person and let him know about the instruments. We get to learn more that way instead of just performing. We promise to work even harder as well.
HARIN: It makes me feel happy whenever I do good work. When you see how much fun these kids have, a smile just naturally appears on your face.
YONGHOON: We also performed for their parents once. Then for some reason, I couldn't control my tears and I started crying. I thought that this was the reason why we perform and do music.
-- Let's talk about the new mini album you released earlier this month - 'Make Some Noise'
CYA: The album has this sort of feeling where we're just messing around together and not thinking about anything else. The title track "Make Some Noise" was created to mimic the kinds of stages you see in rock festivals. That's what we had in mind when the song was made.
DONGMYEONG: As we were preparing for the performance, I wondered "do we have any songs that are exciting?" and we improvised, we felt good about it, and we even recorded it. The company's response was also favourable so it became the title track.
YONGHOON: We've also tried different genres like ballad, jazz, and hip hop. This time around, when we combined EDM with band-style music, we soon realized that it created good synergy. We're thinking of going a bit further with that style in the future. But we won't be sticking with just one genre. Since MAS 0094 is a team that composes its own music, we'll be trying out various things as well.
-- What are MAS 0094's pros?
YONGHOON: I'm confident that we have the most on-stage experience among the rookie groups. We typically busk at Hongdae, Suwon, Hangang Park every weekend. We learned a lot from the senior groups that we've met (No Brain, DAY6, BOL4) on stage.
HARIN: We’ve also tried putting ourselves in the audience's perspective, instead of just thinking about going up on stage. As we see everyone take their seats, we want to make sure that everyone feels comfortable and can see clearly, and that their view of the stage isn't being obstructed.
-- What is the most memorable stage for you?
YONGHOON: I'm afraid it's difficult for bands when it rains. One time, I suddenly got scared when the power [electricity] coming from the microphone shot up.
CyA: The performance in China was also memorable. I felt a new kind of energy and realized the status of KPOP. That recognition was more than when you copy [do a cover] of popular Chinese songs. When we sang Block B and Big Bang seniors' songs, you could hear the audience doing the fanchants.
--This was the first time you've ever done an 'actual' stage [compared to busking activities in the past]
YONGHOON: We have more music show schedules this time around. We're seriously standing in front of the general public. We want to show a stage with a different style and a good performance.
KANGHYUN: We'll be showing you the 'Mannequin Challenge,' which has been popularized nowadays. We've also been preparing for '007' 'Rewind' versions.
--I'm curious to know about your goals.
CyA: For MAS 0094's presence and songs to be known everywhere. I also want to see us go up in the charts. I also want to go to 'Infinite Challenge' as well. Seeing Rose Motel, Chang Ki Ha, and Hyukoh in person would be really cool, too.
-- What kind of team do you want to become?
HARIN: Boohwal seniors are my role models. They've had a lot of hit songs and have been doing activities [together as a band] for a long time. I want us to become great band stars like them as well.
-- What are your wishes for the New Year?
YONGHOON: I wish we could receive a "Band Award" at the end of the year ceremony.
DONGMYEONG: I hope all the members stay healthy. And also, I wish people are filled with happiness whenever they listen to our songs.
HARIN: #1 on Gaon Chart! I want to accomplish that someday, if that doesn't happen this year.
KANGHYUN: I hope we can release a full-length album. With that album release, I also want us to hold a large-scale concert.

🔊: movie star ( lyrics + lines ) | mnet global auditions, season 5 episode 6 group performance with joohyuk, vernon, daniel, & woojin! mentions: @rkxjinki, @rkjinwook, @junerk, @rkjoohyvk, @rkchwev, @rkpwj, @rkxkikwang & @danielxrk ! trigger warnings: food & anxiety!
the semi-finals, the biggest episode of all.
also the most anticipated as well as intimidating, some remnants are also outright scary due to the fact that eliminations may even be bigger in numbers in this episode. however, sakura can let that fear guide her or let it subside, but it can also push her to develop her abilities as she’s been instructed by her advisors, people who have won in the past that possess much more experience than her. the group is now in a large number, down to five and not three. she can work with this, with the right resources and present the essential skills that the judges sought in her effortlessly. if she chooses to listen to the words carefully, remaining on the confident lines than slipping up, right?
she’s got this as long as she continues to put faith that everything will be okay.
the persistence resides within her, preserving so she can make it through with her team. she has to stay on top of her game, becoming a fierce lioness with loads of charisma! simply put, she doesn’t want to let anyone down or make them upset. overall, she’s a genuine soul willing to work with others, providing some support system as well by doing the best she can to show that she wants to help out the team in some way through long practise durations.
it was a perfect idea to prepare cute bento boxes but just in case if any of the others had any allergies, sakura made sure to adjust the meals to their liking! she didn’t want anyone to have an upset stomach, but the dishes were filled with healthy options but also delicious goods. it might’ve not been the best idea to sneak in the occasional desserts, but she couldn’t resist! sakura loves mochi ice cream and dango too much to pass on. plus, she couldn’t just keep eating greens, she wanted to share her favourite delicacies with the team too.
again, training takes most of her days when she’s not at the aquarium doing her volunteer work or at school. her routine is waking up, cooking breakfast and bentos for the team, making sure to leave some for jaewon and his little sister as well for later. as she wants to make sure to hold up to her promise, it was better than going out to eat and waste money or taking out some extra time during lunches when she wanted her friends to relax more than anything else! homemade meals are the absolute best, she didn’t make any excuses when it comes to a healthy lifestyle.
she doesn’t have as many lines compared to the other songs she’s performed, which is relieving in a sense that she doesn’t have to worry about her breath control. a specific technique  that she needs to work on when it comes to singing, but she’s learned a few tips from the pros like jinki and jinwook ( some of the best coaches, supportive all the way with her goals! ), their advice is something she takes to her core, letting it sink in and working through the days to concentrate on improving her singing. hojung is a supportive coach as well, someone she can ask questions to openly! the hangul isn’t as hard to memorise, she manages to nail it down within a couple of hours thanks to rereading all over and over again.
there are those days when she takes a break, pulling away from the practise room to sit down and talk to joohyuk, seeing the other as an older brother figure. serenity radiates throughout her bright smiles in the heart-to-heart talks, sharing lunches with him as they both talk about whatever’s on their mind. sakura isn’t the type to be a judgmental person, always remaining open-minded to the possibilities out there in the world, considering it’s a big big place. but, it still feels empty without kikwang next to them in their meetings. she can’t help it, but she feels that the trio should be completed. she’s gotten to closer to joohyuk with their constant hangouts!
whether or not she’s gotten closer to the others, she’s surely afraid to lose them without a doubt. she doesn’t have the heart to pour out any more tears because she’d just be so damned devastated when she says goodbye to any one of her team members. she tries to replace any sad feelings by smiling through it, using that as a solution to relieve any symptoms of obvious pain. she can’t show frowns, that’s not like her to do so. only one more episode.
maybe she’ll pass or not.
she muses silently to herself, mentally. there’s still that anxiety that doesn’t leave her at the thought of being eliminated but she’d rather herself be gone than anyone of her team. sacrifices are sometimes made but she doesn’t like that last resort. for the most part, everyone’s a dear soul to sakura and has been nothing but nice to her. so there’s no unfriendliness that runs around the bonds with her teammates. she’s not one to bite or start any drama, that’s one last thing she wants to start. a situation that she’ll do her best to evade, staying away from it at all times but it’s really nice to see a smile on everyone’s faces before they hit the stage!
releasing a couple of deep breaths help her out, finding it a temporary method to ease her anxiety levels down so that she isn’t all over the place when she’s performing out there on the big stage. she takes the microphone in her hand, holding it tightly. once her name is called, she stands up from her assigned seat and makes her way over to the lights and camera! she bows politely with her team before the song starts playing. daniel’s the first one to come up, singing the first verse and starting off with a nice medley. she finds both daniel and woojin’s voice relaxing to her ears, holding a nice tone and she hums to the rhythm of the song softly once joohyuk’s turn is up. following through the formations of the dancing whilst holding her notes to not stay off-key isn’t exactly hard, it’s an easy choreography that she can move along with.
she’s a movie movie star 너와의 모든 게 꿈같아 이 순간 she wants it she wants it
she sings the lines smoothly, delivering a nice melody with her signature, soft and sweet voice that isn’t ( hopefully ) overshadowing the others. she tugs her lips into a bright smile and winks at the camera when it’s zoomed in on her face. charisma is critical when it comes to times like these, she might’ve not always been the best performer in the best but she’s doing the best she can to improve. she needs to believe in herself, put in that faith knowing that she’s made it this far, almost at the very last episode.
the truth is, she didn’t expect it to turn out this way, without some of her friends but once she comes back, she’ll thank everyone for getting her through those rough days of training to deliver precise performance. whether she wants to admit it or not, sakura strives for perfection in some moments but doesn’t like to show that upfront. then, woojin sings and it’s her turn again.
take me high take me low 끝이 없는 이 시간 속 i don’t care 포기 못 해 가치를 뛰어 새롭게 더
while she may be better off rapping, sakura figures that it’s better to give off the lines to vernon, who’s a solid rapper with amazing potential! she’s actually asked him for advice as well, on behalf of what she can do with her dancing to stay consistent. not to mention, facial expressions and gestures are important to note on stage, she’d receive some nice feedback which she’s sure to do. sakura isn’t one to be forgetful, her dance moves are sharp and clean, but not stagnant enough that she looks like she’s slacking. sakura feels well when she’s around her team.
끝이 없는 터널 속 내게 비친 한 줄기 마치 맘이 술가 된 듯해 나 상처 속을 걸어 매일
the pronunciation is clean, she’s worked with the others on how to enunciate and pronounce certain words so she doesn’t mess up the lyrics. sakura’s australian accent comes naturally upon the english word, finding that the easiest to say as she doesn’t struggle with her native language. she picks up her body, constantly dancing throughout the song and grinning widely, she’s having fun up on the stage! it’s not much until the song is coming to an end.
혼자 남아버린 밤 하늘 위로 꿈을 그려 상상보다 멀리 더 she wants it she wants it
her breath control has improved a bit with the practise sessions, from the sounds of it. she winks one more time, a cheeky smile on her face when she’s in the centre of the stage delivering her lines, holding the microphone closer as she did have a small voice. that was her last few lines until the boys take over singing. She’s learned a lot being on the mnet global auditions, something she’s truly grateful to have an opportunity like this. It doesn’t come around too often.
once the song ends, sakura takes a courteous bow and makes sure to thank the viewers, contestants, and judges for their time.
almost there. one more.
