Do you have a way to describe Skyline Chili to someone that won’t make them immediately question your sanity? Weirdly I’ve had more success explaining goetta lol
The most approachable way I've described it is "Spaghetti, but with chili sauce" because in terms of composition that's the only factor that separates a Skyline Chili 3-Way from a regular spaghetti with cheese.
As much as I dislike when people get irrationally upset over food they haven't tried, I do embrace how off-putting Skyline Chili is at a glance to some people. It's a great conversation starter for folks outside the US or from the West coast. Love the reactions to "What if I told you this strange spaghetti dish with ungodly amounts of cheddar cheese was actually delicious?"

Cincinnati Chili [edible]
Hooboy. Recently--as in, tonight--Ballistic BBQ on youtube had an episode on how to copycat Skyline coneys (chili dogs.) And gdi, I am A Chili Person now because I Have Issues with his lack of research into the subject. I had a comment written out, trying to be both CORRECTIVE yet polite, but you know what? Fuck it. I'm gonna save my long-time, hard-won experience with you fine folk, instead.
Recipe first, then notes:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For those non-fluent in Chickenscratch:
2T peanut oil (optional) 28oz tomato puree 1lb ground beef 1lb ground pork 6 cloves garlic, minced 2t cinnamon 1T cumin 2T Worcestershire 3 bay leaves (optional) 4T white vinegar 2 15oz cans kidney beans, drained & rinsed (see notes) 4T pure chili powder (see notes) 2t allspice 4T unsweetened cocoa powder 2t regular Tabasco sauce
toppings: 1 small finely chopped white onion (optional) yellow mustard (hella optional) finely shredded cheddar cheese (not optional)
Put oil into stock pot; on med heat, sweat 1/4 to 1/2 of garlic until fragrant. Add meat and cook until pink is gone, stirring thoroughly to break grounds into crumbles. No chunks. Skim away fat; does not need to be thoroughly drained unless desired (see notes.) Add puree and remainder of garlic. Stir to combine. Add liquids, stir. Add powders, through a sifter if possible. Otherwise, stir, making sure any balls of cocoa powder get broken down. If adding beans directly into chili (see notes), add them now, and stir to combine.
If eating chili right away, heat until hot, stirring fairly frequently; if making in advance, transfer to a lidded container, allow to cool, and refrigerate until needed. Flavors will develop and meld very nicely over 24 hours, but the hot, fresh chili will still be spicy and tasty.
Makes... gawd... 4-6 adult servings of chili spaghetti, or can cover about 16 hot dogs. We tend to get 2 separate meals of 3 generous adult portions & sometimes a little leftover for dip, from one batch.

Notes:
this recipe originated from The Frugal Gourmet Cooks American; as presented here, it has inclusions from the original, and adjustments (usually omissions) I have made over 20-some years of cooking it. I cook it to eat it, not to adhere to best practices nor perfect authenticity.
peanut oil is optional if you go straight to browning the meat and then at the garlic after skimming most of the fat. It's just in the original recipe, and just for sweating the garlic. would NOT recommend subbing any oil with a distinct flavor (olive, sunflower, etc.)
I originally added the bay leaves a few times, but never really noticed them adding much to the mix. safe to omit, if you don't have any.
coneys do not really have beans, unless requested. if you're only going to use the chili on hot dogs, or just don't want them, you can choose not to use any. if you'd like smaller beans on/in coney chili, rinsed black beans work well, also. I like the beans in general, and add them in for convenience, since I'm usually going to have one meal of coneys and one of spaghetti. typically, the beans are a separate topping on the chili, and not folded into the chili itself. people from Cincinnati will judge you. I'm from Dayton, though, so I won't.
ALL Cincinnati chili comes with finely shredded cheddar (looking at YOU, Ballistic BBQ.) it's technically a garnish, but it's a big flavor component of the entire dish. you will not find store-bought cheese shredded as finely as the parlors use. this is expected, and okay.
"chili powder" in grocery stores tends to be a blend of several different spices anymore. I don't know when this happened. additional cumin, any oregano, etc. will noticeably alter this recipe's taste, and in my opinion, not in a good way. BE AWARE that grocers that have sections for Indian ingredients may have jars of "pure chili powder", but these are MUCH HOTTER than the chilis in US blends. Maybe you want that, but don't find out by accident like I did. I recommend cutting to the chase and ordering pure chili powder from MexGrocer.com. I get their California and New Mexico powders, both nice and reasonable, and combine them. one packet of each should yield enough powder for this recipe, with a little left over. a neighborhood Mexican grocery is likely to have pure powders, too, but I don't know the specific types to recommend. some of those can pretty hot by surprise, as well.
skimming the fat is up to you. if you do, your chili will be thicker and a bit brighter in spice. if you don't, it will be thinner (more like parlor chili, tbh,) and a little bit mellowed. the viscosity is the biggest difference. thicker doesn't drip off of coney as easily, but you might want thinner to soak deeper into your spaghetti. however you normally approach excess meat juices should be fine.
another spice altering aspect: you can leave out the ground pork and just use 1lb ground beef, to save money. your chili will have a slightly stronger tomato flavor, and a little more spice. you can also leave out the pork and use 2lb beef, the pork is just ~authentic~ because Cincinnati has a shitload of pork processors. you could probably sub ground turkey for the pork, as I understand it absorbs other meats' flavors, but you'd still need the beef to flavor it. another matter of personal tastes or circumstances.
and another: a spoonful of sour cream on spaghetti chili will mild it down very nicely while still being delicious, if it's too spicy for someone. for coneys or a chip dip, mix your desired ratio aside in a bowl, and enjoy.
by "cocoa powder", the recipe means like Baker's Corner, Hershey's--the same stuff you'd bake with or add to hot milk, just unsweetened. Some people (BBBQ) like to make it sound fancy with "cacao", but it's just unsweetened cocoa.
salt is not included as an ingredient, because my family has cut way back on using it at all for... probably the same 20 years I've been making chili. my dad got diagnosed with high blood pressure when he retired, and to help him out, my mom and I both decided it wasn't our favorite spice in the world anyway, and started leaving it out when it's not necessary (it's necessary in baking. don't fuck too much with baking recipes.) I also find that vinegar has a lot of same zing flavor that salt does, without the salt, and this recipe has a lot of vinegar, plus salt in the Worcestershire, Tabasco, and cheese. that's plenty for us, but feel free to add salt to taste, if you'd like more.
toppings: frankly, everything but the chili itself is one. chili + cheese + hotdog = coney. chili + cheese + spaghetti = 3-way. add onion = 4-way. add beans = 5-way. the mustard is always optional, it's just very popular. I... have never gone there, and don't intend to. parlors also offer very basic cayenne hot sauces, to add heat without much flavor distraction. this is just for authenticity; hot sauce it however you like.
Cincinnati chili, itself, is not Greek--Skyline's founder is. Skyline did not invent the chili. Macedonian immigrants did. Skyline certainly added some Greek influence to their family variation, and a lot of people like it, but BBBQ did not research the history beyond Skyline as a company, and made assumptions. do not make assumptions about history a whole city has civic pride in. shit, just admit you don't know, you're just there to make some good chili dogs, and youtube commenters will fill in those gaps for you.

Cincinnati's Skylar Blatt is the Midwest's Next Hip-Hop Princess
Tumblr media
Cincinnati is a blue collar town, known as the home of the Bengals, the Reds, Skyline Chili, and Procter & Gamble. But despite a bustling scene, the Queen City isn't really known for its hip-hop. Enter rising rapper Skylar Blatt, who has the talent and charisma to put her city on the rap map. Her crushing bars and knack for easy melody has earned her co-signs from some of the biggest artists in the game, and with ILWT/Saint Ka$h/Arista Records at her back, the sky is the limit.
Raised by a single mother as one of six kids, Skylar learned early lessons about the high stakes of life on the Cincinnati streets. When her mom lost her job, she moved in with her Grandma–who Skylar describes as a "gangsta"–who taught her how to survive on her own. She found a safe harbor in hip-hop, escaping her troubles by listening to rappers from all regions–she learned free associative rhyming from Lil Wayne, picked up feminine fury from Nicki Minaj, took notes on the creative use of melody by artists like Young Thug and Future, and implemented plenty of the tough-talking bravado she learned from NY rappers like 50 Cent, Juelz Santana and Jadakiss.
With 10,000 hours of hip-hop study in the bank and a style that she knew stood out from others in her city, she started to embark on her own hip-hop dreams. At first, she uploaded freestyles to her personal Facebook and Instagram pages, and when those gained traction, she started writing her own songs.
youtube
After gaining an early co-sign from Meek Mill, and a glowing profile from Lyrical Lemonade, the young rapper started collaborating with many of the Midwest's finest rappers, connecting with Babyface Ray and fellow Cincinnati rapper Midwest Milly for "Exactly," racking up over 800k YT views, and teaming with Icewear Vezzo for the sinister "God Forbid." A lifelong Bengals fan, she teamed with fellow Ohioan Doe Boy to craft "BENGALS (SUPER BOWL)," an anthem meant to cheer on Joe Burrow and company as they played in Super Bowl LVI. In October 2023, Skylar shared her mixtape Blatt SZN, home to "God Forbid" and ten other Cincy slappers. The tape won her a fan in Lola Brooke, who hopped on a remix to her song "F*ck Fame."
Skylar is currently riding a wave of momentum from her new single “Laughin To Tha Bank,” a hard-hitting anthem that is already beginning to impact local radio in Cincinnati. Produced by Too Dope and Akachi, “Laughin To Tha Bank” is a perfect exemplar of what makes Skylar a special talent: rhyming through a sly grin, Skylar crafts an addictive cadence, alternating rich life flexes with intimidating tough talk with effortless ease: "See I'm the type who took her on a date/Just so she can show me where she stay if you ever at her place," rhymes Skylar.
Tumblr media
Now, as the inaugural signee to Saint Ka$h Records, the record label founded by Kendell "Sav" Freeman, Skylar is looking to become the next Midwest rapper to break things open. With more music and, "Wake Up," a major collaboration with Chris Brown coming this Friday, April 26th, the Queen City queen is ready to defy the odds. Watch this space.

curious cause i saw your tag; what is your skyline and how are you making it?
Oh ty for asking!! Skyline is a Cincinnati style chili restaurant, and it's pretty much my favorite dinner ^^; I no longer live in Ohio, but I learned recently that I can buy cans of the chili from my Wegmans!
The actual dish I'm making with it is called a three way - noodles, chili, and shredded cheese! Very tasty, 10/10, could eat it forever if I had to
On top of it being very tasty it just. Reminds me of home hdhdjdh I live states away now and sometimes I think about coordinating w my mom to make skyline at home separately so we can both have the same dinner when we hang out over the phone <3

DESPITE this, I did manage to go through and organize my mom’s recipes (and cull the ones that I’m never going to make, and set aside some for my brother that he might like), AND remember that in undergrad I decided I wanted to put journal articles in page protectors in a binder AND STILL HAVE IT TODAY
It kills two birds with one stone because I’ve been meaning to clear it out (i have worked very hard to become mediocre at reading articles on screens instead of on paper, and i can duplicate any smart notes i took (which actually, there are some in there)), but then what do you keep in a binder and page protectors these days??? TADA!
I just need to figure out what to do with the recipes from newspapers and random scraps of paper and whatever. Do I index card them. Do I type them and print them. How am I going to actually look at them regularly.
And then also like
some of these are duplicate recipes and you know, I just don’t want to make beef Wellington twice to figure out which is tastier, or which of the three Cincinnati chilis reminds me the most of skyline chili. But those are kind of whatever because I currently have space for them and don’t need to cull them right now. Just what if.
It’s gonna be so much better when scone is here and I can cook for more than just me again. Someday he too can make decisions about what food to make and eat!!
Unreasonably annoyed that somehow both target AND Office Depot are closed today and I wanted to get some page protectors and binder dividers to organize my mom’s random collection of recipes today during a crafternoon
SIGH being a godless heathen is so hard sometimes

How to make a perfect coney From "How About a 3-Way?" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xLxeY8PkVyM One of the wildest things I learned while watching these training videos is that plain hot dogs are called "single wiener buns" for some reason, and if you order one and don't specify "single" they will simply cram the two hot dogs together in a single bun. And also that you can order a "Juicy" Way where they strategically give you more of the wet, runny part of the chili. Even as an avid Skyline Apologist I can not abide this.

Welcome to the Table States
Been thinking of doing this for a while, just a cast list for Welcome to the Table by main, major recurring, minor recurring, and guest spots. Let me know if I missed anyone. Also I don’t know sports teams worth a damn, so if I don’t name the state’s jerseys as they should be, that’s why.
Main cast:
(These are characters that premiered in the first episode and appear in most if not all of the episodes. Note: unless otherwise mentioned, all characters in this series are portrayed by Ben Brainard)
DC: The District of Columbia. Runs the meetings. Acts as the leader, but occasionally the shady side of politics comes out of him. Trying desperately to keep his sanity amid the virus, BLM, and everyday American life. His appearance goes from wearing a polo shirt to a suit and tie. Appears in every episode.
Call: “I’m about to do something drastic!”
Florida: The Sunshine State. The Mr. Hyde to DC’s Dr. Jekyll, he is all for absolute chaos and fun over order and following guidelines, and basically comes to the meetings solely to ruin DC’s day. Knows how to call every state because everyone eventually moves to Florida. His appearance is usually a tank top, shorts and a bucket hat. Believes that the coronavirus is a hurricane (or a tropical storm, it varies from day to day). Appears in every episode.
Call: “Duval!”
Texas: The Lone Star State. Usually represents everything the conservative side stands for (guns, politics, religion, women’s rights, big government, you get the drill). His appearance is a red button down shirt and a black cowboy hat. Appears in most episodes.
Call: Sing lines from “Who Put All My Ex's in Texas” by Willie Nelson
California: The Golden State. Usually represents everything the progressive liberal side stands for (abortion, anti-police, anti-fascism, anti-confederacy, BLM, you get it). His appearance is hipster based with beanie and thick-framed glasses. Appears in most episodes.
Call: “Hey Human Torch!” (Unknown if that’s official call or if it just worked because of the wildfires currently ongoing in California)
New York: The Empire State. Tends to be gruff, abrasive and sometimes hostile with his arms almost always folded. Politically is sort of the middle ground between Texas and California; mostly would rather be doing anything else. His appearance used to be a winter coat and hat but has since switched to a Giants jersey. Appears in most episodes.
Call: Unknown at this time, but does react when someone claims their pizza is better.
Major Recurring:
(These are states that make frequent appearances and/or have a strong presence)
Louisiana: The Pelican State. Florida’s best friend and main partner in crime. Very laid back. Only character that speaks with a Cajun accent. His appearance was initially a bucket hat and suspenders with no shirt, but has gradually shifted to wearing LSU gear. Loves daiquiris and gators. Appears in most episodes. His premiere episode is the most watched episode of the series.
Call: “Who dat? Who dat?”
(Note: At this point he has appeared in as many episodes as the main cast, considering bumping him up to main.)
Georgia: The Peach State. Always acts like he just got out of bed, and is almost never seen without a mug of coffee. His appearance has gradually shifted from pajamas to Panthers gear. About as chaotic as Florida, but more out of being dim-witted than out of desire for chaos. Appears in many episodes.
Call: Unknown at this time
West Virginia: The Mountain State: The only state to appear in the pilot episode that is not a main character. Appears very infrequently. His appearances usually involve following coronavirus guidelines and his usage of the word “f***.” Initially dressed in Amish clothing, he has since changed to a Mountaineers football shirt and hat.
Call: Unknown at this time
Washington: The Evergreen State. As the American spread of the coronavirus originated in Seattle, he is almost always coughing but passes it off as ïżœïżœallergies.” Usually wears a dark short-sleeved button down and hipster glasses with ear buds. Appears in several episodes.
Call: Unknown at this time
Massachusetts: The Bay State. Appears frequently and loudly. Has a love-mostly-hate relationship with New York. Tends to be a very abrasive and loud voice of reason. His appearance has gone from a Celtics jersey to a Bruins one.
Call: “Is that Matt Damon and Ben Affleck?”
Utah: The Beehive State. His appearance is a dress shirt and tie and he usually carries a Bible. He is a Mormon and very religious. Has an antagonistic relationship with Florida, who constantly belittles him and inquires about his multiple wives (which Utah does not do anymore). Appears semi-frequently.
Call: “I wish someone were here to tell me about my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!”
Kentucky: The Bluegrass State. Usually wears a dress sweater and carries a picture of Governor Andy Beshear with him everywhere. Tends to be a voice of reason and one of the least problematic states at the table, which is surprising given who his senator is. Appears semi-frequently.
Call: Pronounce “Louisville”
The Carolinas: Both make frequent and strong appearances, and both have a rough relationship with Florida. Both wear T-shirts reflecting their states.
South Carolina: The Palmetto State. Likes to remind Florida of the Jameis Winston crab legs incident. Gets annoyed if you say his barbeque is trash. Loves college football and is always talking about Clemson.
Call: “Carolina BBQ is trash!”
North Carolina: The Tar Heel State. Although he has only appeared in the series fairly recently, he has already become a recurring character. Loves barbecues and basketball. Tends to get hit with a lot of natural disasters.
Call: “It’s bo time!”
Colorado: The Centennial State. Wears a blue T-shirt and a ski hat with goggles. Is usually high all the time and constantly talks about weed. Appears semi-frequently.
Call: Howl like a wolf
Alaska: The Last Frontier. Has only appeared a couple of times but has made a strong impression. Wears an “Alaskan grown” shirt and winter hat. Speaks in a slow but patient voice. Likes to be left alone. Has a friendly rivalry with Texas on account of size. Is a little weird but friendly enough.
Call: None. He is always there. Like Batman.
Minor Recurring:
(These are for characters that are more like supporting characters. Note that although several of these states have had episodes focusing on them, their overall presence is less than that of the major recurring)
Indiana: The Hoosier State. Has only appeared twice. Has trouble coming to terms with Mike Pence’s alleged homosexuality. Not much else notable about him.
Call: Sing the Indiana Jones theme (Although he would prefer “Hoo hoo!”)
Pennsylvania: The Keystone State. Appears semi-frequently but is mostly a slightly less abrasive New York or Massachusetts. Wears an Eagles jersey in most appearances. Constantly asking for a drink. Constantly asking people to choose between Wawa or Sheetz.
Call: “We are!”
Wisconsin: The Badger State. Wears a giant foam Swiss cheese hat on his head. Is perpetually drunk. Argues in favor of the rights of the people (although not always in the best ways). Hates Illinois and especially the Bears.
Call: “Anyone need anything from Quik Trip?”
Illinois: The Prairie State. Mostly just known for Chicago and not much else. Wears a Cubs jersey and hat. Seems rather old fashioned and does not like alcoholics. Everyone in his state seems to hate each other. Hates Wisconsin and has arguments with New York in regards to who makes better pizza.
Call: Unknown, but seems to react to someone insulting the Bears.
Ohio: The Buckeye State. Loves skyline chili and wine at two o’clock. Begins just about every sentence with “ope.” Used to dress like a rapper wannabe, but now dressed in Ohio State gear. Hates Michigan and given the chance would kill him himself.
Call: “O-H!”
Michigan: The Great Lake State. Wears a Lions jersey and hat and brings a bottle of Vernors with him everywhere. Hates Ohio and wants to beat Ohio State at football.
Call: “Liberate Michigan!”
New Mexico: The Land of Enchantment. Appears very infrequently. Speaks Spanish on top of English. Is intelligent to a degree but will throw down if necessary. Mostly talks about cultural things. Wears a blue hoodie-looking sweater.
Call: Unknown, but responds when someone claims to have better green chili.
Mississippi: The Show Me State. Claims to be the “Harvard of the South.” Carries a water bottle with him wherever he goes. Gets into arguments with California over Confederate momentos.
Call: Unknown at this time
Alabama: The Cotton State. Mostly appears in the weekly recap videos. Represents the philosophies of the Deep South. Not much else known about him.
Call: Unknown at this time
Arizona: The Grand Canyon State. Appears mostly as a semi-frequent character in the weekly recap videos. Not much else is known about him.
Call: Unknown at this time
Missouri: The Show Me State. Appears semi-frequently in the weekly recap videos. Not much is known about him other than he likes barbeque and has a feud with Kansas over Kansas City.
Call: Unknown at this time
Oklahoma: The Sooner State. Appears mostly in the weekly recap videos but has made other appearances too. Tends to be rather sarcastic and blunt, but is prone to overreaction at times. Hates Texas.
Call: Unknown at this time
Tennessee: The Volunteer State. Appears mostly in the weekly recap videos. Tends to be high-pitched and melodramatic.
Call: Unknown at this time
Oregon: The Beaver State. Appears mostly in the weekly recap videos. Was very active during the BLM protests and was vocal against the use of police brutality and unmarked abductions.
Call: Unknown at this time
Minnesota: The North Star State. Appears mostly in the weekly recap videos. Was very active during the BLM protests and in support of defunding police and reallocating resources. Tends to be a voice of reason.
Call: Unknown at this time
Connecticut: The Constitution State. Has only appeared a few times in the weekly recap videos. Tries to avoid dealing with Florida as much as he can.
Call: Unknown at this time
Maryland: The Free State. Wore a T-shirt in early appearances but is now decked out in crab gear in recent ones. As abrasive as a northern state, but with as much pride as a southern one. Early episodes had a running gag of Maryland’s issues regarding coronavirus tests.
Call: “Anyone have any Old Bay?”
The Dakotas: Appear infrequently. Only have about thirty-six people among both of them.
North Dakota: Has only appeared a couple of times. Not much is known about him.
South Dakota: Has appeared more often than his brother, but usually only talks about the Sturgis Bike Rally. Also is trying to fight meth.
Call: “Who’s the better Dakota again?” (will call both of them)
Iowa: The Corn State. One of the biggest running gags in the series is that no one seems to know where he is or how to get in touch with him. Tends to come and go from meetings whenever he sees fit.
Call: Unknown at this time
Background characters:
(Characters that only appear once or have no real significance to the series)
Nevada: The Silver State. Has only appeared once. Dresses like a Vegas dancer.
Rhode Island: The Ocean State. Has only appeared once to discuss his name change.
New Jersey: The Garden State. Has only appeared once. Doesn’t like it when New York keeps visiting him.
Wyoming: The Equality State. Has only appeared once when Florida insulted his name.
Nebraska: The Cornhusker State. Has appeared a couple of times but has had no real significance.
Kansas: The Sunflower State. Has only appeared a couple of times. Tends to feud with Missouri over Kansas City.
Idaho: The Gem State. Has only appeared once(?).
Arkansas: The Natural State. His only real appearance was in the poker episode when everyone told him he couldn’t play on account of he never shuts anything down and can’t weigh in with anything.
Delaware: The First State. Has only appeared twice. Like the state itself, nothing of significance has yet been noted.
Virginia: The Old Dominion. Has only appeared a couple of times, and his only notable role was in the mask debate.
States that still have not made an appearance:
Montana
Vermont
Maine
New Hampshire
Hawaii (Note that Brainard has stated he wishes to find a Hawaiian native actor to play this character.)
Other characters in this series:
CDC: The Center of Disease Control. Originally played by Ben Brainard, the role has since been taken over by comedian Drew Lynch. An overworked, underappreciated man who tries to get the states to adhere to coronavirus regulations. He has a bad stutter and has not slept in weeks. He may be being kept alive purely on coffee and good intentions.
International DC: Played by Elana Rose. Has only appeared once. DC’s sister and the international relations part of the federal government. She’s not very good at her job and tends to act very “mean girl.”
Mother Nature: Played by Liz, aka “lozclaws”. The goddess of earthling weather. Has an on-again off-again relationship with Florida.
Claire: Also played by Liz. Mother Nature’s...roommate? Mother? Not entirely sure. Tries to be a voice of reason to a pair with very little reason between the two of them.
The National Guard: The national army. Has only appeared twice, once to bodyguard Maryland, the other to discuss the BLM protests.
The 3rd Amendment: The third amendment to the Constitution of the United States. Only appeared once. It was very confusing.
Virginia: Kentucky’s sign-language interpreter. Only appeared once. Was deeply offended by Florida (as we all are).
Greg the Sound Guy: The guy who handles the audio and holds the mic boom for the show. Only appeared twice. Probably doesn’t get paid enough.

WENDY: You know what? I liked those golden goblins! Sounded just like a church choir. They were certainly better than... [she snorts, shaking her head as if it's all just too much] The Waffletoots... I mean what the hell!
DAVID: I’m David Pumpkins!
SUE: Wendy Williams, I have to say I agree with your statement as nauseous as it makes me to admit. Those Waffletoots were a disaster to the name of show choir and I once busted my ass off to get a glee club to nationals one dreaded year that has remained in my cobwebbed nightmares for decades
DAVID: I’m David Pumpkins! (a pause) Okay, but seriously, I loved those warbler guys. Trolls is actually a really incredible franchise and the music is iconic. The group itself had incredible choreography. They were completely in sync, vocally and physically. They deserve to win. (Skeleton back-up dancers stare at David in shock) Any questions?!
WENDY: Oh. Well. Alright. Didn't know he could do that. . . Anyhow I agree! Those Gargler boys from Dayton Academy were refreshing! I was a little surprised they did so well but...you know [she thoughtfully smacks her lips together] I really liked them!
SUE: [arms folded] It is absolutely outstanding that you have more than three miniscule words in your repertoire, David Squash. Those homoerotic boys always did know how to put on a good show. [she looks down at her ballot] Looks like we all know who we're voting for. The gay teens first and then I couldn't care less about the singing farters or the Catholic kids.
WENDY: Let's vote then! Clap if you think we should vote! [With a single clap in unison from David Pumpkins' two skeletons, she fills out her ballot. Warblers First, Golden Goblets Second. Waffletoots Third.]
SUE: [opting not to clap, she filled out her ballot. First, Warblers. No question about that. Second, Golden Goblets. Third, Waffletoots.]
DAVID: [maintains his finger guns while the skeletons fill out his ballot for him: Warblers first, Golden Goblets second, Waffletoots third.]
[About an hour later, Sue walks out on stage with David S. Pumpkins and Wendy Williams]
SUE: There's actually people in the audience still? Shocking and dismayed. Anyways, let's get this going. In third place, The Waffletoots! [She hands them their trophy, the captain is crying at their loss]. Alright and the moment I'm sure you all have been long waiting for. In second place, The Golden Goblets from [she tries to say the name] the only Catholic school in Ohio. Which means the gays from Dalton Academy win tonight's regionals. Good job to everyone, even the losers. Good luck at nationals! [Becky Jackson comes toddling from left stage and whispers in Sue's ear] I have just been informed that there will actually be another ear bleeding induced competition next week as well. Please don't show up.

Parlay | (Kuroo x Reader) | Ch. 10 | FINAL
- Pairing: Kuroo Tetsurou x Reader (ft. Roommate Kenma)
Word Count: ~2, 100
Genres: Fluff, general buffoonery
CW: Swearing, sadness I guess, a little spicy but only, like, half a chili pepper out of 5
Summary: (Y/N), a first-year student attending Tokyo U, is living with her best friend, Kozume Kenma. Little did she know, her life would be turned upside down after being exposed to Kenma’s volleyball teammate and close friend, Kuroo Tetsurou. One wrong move, and the parlay’s stakes only get higher each time.
Chapters: First | Previous | Next (None! This is the last one :))
Parlay bets are high risk, but have the potential to garner increased odds and payoffs. Rather than place multiple single bets, the parlay combines several other, often smaller, bets. Say we’re looking at sports betting. Then the parlay bet would be a small to medium sum on several teams, rather than a large sum on one team.
There is a catch, however. In exchange for higher odds and increased payoff, the risk for a parlay bet is high, because in order to win each bet must win. So, if you bet on five sports teams, and all five win, then hooray for you! One loss out of five, and you lose everything.
See how that may be more of a risk than you’re willing to take. Typically, frequent gamblers choose not to place parlay bets. The payout is often not enough to make what they stand to lose worth it.
Kuroo stood there, wide-eyed at the ball gently rolling away from the net. He looked at his hands in disbelief. The roar of the crowd around him nearly burst his eardrums while Bokuto and the rest of his teammates leapt onto him in exultation. Sweat-slicked and on the verge of collapse, he mechanically stood on the back line, bowed to his opponents, bowed to the spectators that came to support his team.
It was like Kuroo was in a trance when he headed for the locker rooms with his team. There was so much running through his mind that everything felt a static numbness. It was until a familiar dulcet voice called out to him that snapped him out of his trance.
“Kuroo!” (Y/N) yelled from down the hallway.
The boy’s attention snapped to her form sprinting at him.
Parlay bets are best placed by those who don’t gamble very often. For Kuroo, a lot has to go right for him to get what he wants.
One, (Y/N) cannot still have feelings for Oikawa or have feelings for anyone else.
Two, he himself must have treated her sufficiently well as a human being. These are the conditions of the bet, but be that as it may, when it comes to her, Kuroo would never settle for ‘sufficient’.
Three, she has to love him back.
~~
Kuroo took a step towards her and opened his arms. Without missing a beat, (Y/N) ran and jumped into his arms, throwing her arms around his neck.
Deciding, ‘Fuck it,’ Kuroo leaned down and captured her lips in a kiss.
(Y/N) yelped a little in surprise, then relaxed, melting into the embrace. Her hands came up to cup his face while they ignored the loud ribbing from the Tokyo U team behind them.
Kuroo was, surprisingly, the one to pull back first. Not very far, but he separated their lips just enough to ask her, “What are you doing tonight?”
“Nothing yet.”
“Great. See you at seven?”
“It’s a date.”
~~
A cool breeze blew through the Tokyo U campus as (Y/N) and Kuroo walked through the main quad. The tall middle blocker had thoroughly refused to tell her where they were going, even as they walked up the fourth flight of stairs in the biology building of the university.
Once they arrived at the roof access door, Kuoo produced a single key with a little green tag on it.
“I have my ways,” he had told her.
Upon opening the door, they were greeted by a completely barren rooftop garden. The planter boxes were filled with soil and nothing else. Empty pots accompanied uncovered trellises, and the small birdbath was completely dry. It’s hard to see very many stars in a city like Tokyo, but from the rooftop, the lights from the high-rise buildings, and streetlights, and headlights from cars dotted the landscape like heaven on earth.
The night air ruffled (Y/N)’s hair soothingly. She stared out at the city lights in wide-eyed wonder.
Kuroo’s shoes shuffled against the concrete rooftop as he shuffled to her side and leaned against the rail. “I’ve lived in Tokyo my whole life. I used to hate that you could never see the stars around here, but
I think the city lights are a different kind of beautiful, don’t you think?”
In the bright moonlight, the girl’s face glowed with amazement. The Tokyo skyline was something she could only dream of as a young girl growing up in rural Miyagi prefecture. Even then, her greatest wish was to attend university in the big city. That dream was the whole reason she had been studying so hard from the start, and she got what she wanted. At Tokyo U, it felt like she could pursue whatever her heart desired, even if that, too, was problematic for her.
“I’ve been wanting to see a sight like this since I moved to Tokyo,” she rounded on him with a look of sincerity, “Thank you for bringing me here, Tetsurou. It’s perfect.”
His heart beat louder in his chest. Suddenly, the cool night air was much too warm for his burning face.
(Y/N) started again, “And I love this garden, too.” She gestured all around them at the empty pots and planters. “Even if there aren’t any flowers, I like this setup. There’s nothing here yet, but that just means there’s infinite possibilities for what could be here, right?”
The tension in Kuroo’s shoulders faded away almost completely.
“I was thinking,” he moved close enough for their shoulders to brush each other’s, “I think
” He paused again. Damn this was hard.
“Some things. Some plants. Grow.”
‘Okay, Tetsurou. Good start. You got this.’
Gaze flickering over to his companion’s, encouragement filled him when he found her nodding at him to continue.
The tall young man took a deep breath, “This garden doesn’t have plants in it because the plants aren’t in season. They’re real pretty, but stuff only grows when it’s time for it to do so
 because it’s not ready.”
He rubbed his shoulder in discomfort. It was becoming too much for him and he looked away from her, only for her to use a gentle hand on his cheek to return his focus to her.
“So,” she said gently, “Would you say these plants are still out of season? Or do you think spring is on its way?”
Who else could understand his jumbled mess of a monologue like she could? Kuroo was grateful for the way she could understand him, jumbled and anxious as he was. He sighed and took her hand.
“I’m sorry, being poetic isn’t really my thing. I need to suck it up and be straightforward with you. I want to be with you, (Y/N), I really do. I can’t tell you how much I would love to hold your hand and take you on sappy dates and give you my jersey to wear at my games and just think to myself how lucky I am to have someone like you by my side. I think about doing all those things constantly enough to where it’s become a serious issue, but
” he ran a hand down his face in frustration, “I don’t know if I’m ready. Whenever I see you with Oikawa or with whoever, I just think about how you could be a great partner for anyone, so it's hard for me to understand why you would choose me. It’s not that I think you’re shallow. At all. It’s me. It’s me thinking I’m not good enough to be worthy of being by your side.”
(Y/N) stared at him with rapt attention and something else Kuroo could’ve sworn was surprise, “Tetsurou
I had no idea you felt that way. I mean, when you’re not around me, you always seem so confident.”
“I-- Ugh, I don’t know. When I’m with my team, I’m thinking about so many different things. With them, as a leader-type, I’m concerned about them and their needs. When I’m with you, you’re all a think about. Then I have time to be insecure about all that crap.”
The black-haired male rested his weight against the railing. He hugged his flannel to himself a little closer. It wasn’t easy being vulnerable like this, especially not after being a team captain, where he didn’t need to think about himself so much. Strangely, though, he felt a bit better. Lighter, even.
(Y/N) rubbed his arm to comfort him.
“That makes sense. So, what now? What is it you want?”
“I want to be your boyfriend.”
“Already? I don’t want you to feel pressured.”
Kuroo shook his head, “I don’t know about a lot of things, but one thing I know I want is to be your boyfriend. Whether that be today, yesterday, or ten years down the line, I know that’s what I want, but
”
“But?”
“But not right now. I’m not entirely sure what I need right now, but I don’t want everything I’m afraid of to hang over our relationship. I feel like I need to get stronger, mentally. For myself, but especially for you. Does that make sense?”
(Y/N) couldn’t suppress her grin. She took both of Kuroo’s hands in hers.
“Completely.”

~~
(Y/N) wasn’t doing anything special. It had been a few months since she and Kuroo had their talk on the rooftop. Since then, they had been spending time together, with Kenma, the team, or just the two of them. With a little time, they were beginning to understand each other better. The two of them seemed more comfortable together, at peace, even. Slowly, but surely, Kuroo had become much kinder to himself. His own worst critic was learning to take it easy on himself.
(Y/N) had done quite a bit of soul searching herself and in the months since their talk, she was ready to choose a major and enter a program.
“I want to do everything, but the longer I hesitate, I’ll end up being too late to do anything,” she explained.
She’d spent ages studying for her entrance exam. Knowing how she was when she was studying, the best either Kuroo or Kenma could do was bring her food, make sure she had enough light when she studied at night, make sure she was drinking water, and other small favors. The two of them just wished they could do more.
Neither of them were surprised when she got into her program on the first try. Kenma swears that he lost his hearing for a while after hearing her squealing over her acceptance letter.
Now, (Y/N) was washing dishes with a thick textbook propped up in front of her. Her classes hadn’t started yet, but she told her friends that she “wanted to get ahead!” Secretly, though, Kuroo knew she couldn’t wait to read the new material. She was practically bursting at the seams when she came home from the bookstore with the large tome.
She was so focused on her reading, Kuroo noticed that she had been washing that same bowl for the past five minutes. One of her sweater sleeves had rolled down and was dragging in the soapy water. If she had noticed, there was no way to tell.
It wasn’t that she was doing anything special. Perhaps it was because she wasn’t doing anything of note at the moment that gave Kuroo butterflies, but the sight he saw in front of him was just so her, he couldn’t help himself.
Before he knew it, the words had already left his mouth.
“I love you.”
(Y/N) froze. She blinked, as if she had been woken up from a deep slumber.
Her head turned slowly until her tentative gaze met his.
“Wh-- What?” she gasped.
Kuroo smiled back at her, more sure than he’d ever been.
“I love you.”
There was a quiet thud as the bowl she was washing sunk to the bottom of the basin.
Kuroo continued, “You deserve someone who would give you the world. I’m ready for that person to be me.”
(Y/N)’s face split in an uncontrollable grin. She ran and practically jumped into his arms for a hug. With her arms wrapped firmly around Kuroo’s neck.
“You’re sure? We can still wait if you want.”
“I’m sure. Do you still want to be my girlfriend?”
She pecked his cheek, “Of course I do.”
Kuroo gazed down at her fondly. She already had his heart. She could crush it under her heel, leave it a broken mess in the dirt. But somehow, for some reason, he felt like she would take good care of it.
Of course, there was no way to be sure, but that was a bet he was willing to make.
