I brought this up a few times, but one of my leprosy tidbits that fascinates me is how it affects mood and libido. Good chunk of some christian faiths didn't take kindly to leprosy, which may be rooted how many skin diseases were associated with terrible sins at the time, mostly sexual, a lot of texts we have of those specific parts were painting victims in a terrible light.
Especifically how leprosy turned people into monstrous violent rapists, those descriptions where mostly ignored by modern medicine researchers, because it obviously came from a group who didn't have the best intentions in mind.
Except that, the same description kept showing up in several texts, from different times, cultures, places, my favorite one has to be from a byzantinum physician who put it "A raging desire of Aphrodite, and a spontaneous periods of weakness." // "Lepers are especially desirous and burn for intercourse, then feel themselves weaker than normal." And at what point do you get so many descriptions of the same thing and go "Maybe we should investigate?" Because no one did, for hundreds of years!!!
And turns out... turns out... they were right!!! All along!!! Because you see, because leprosy is a dynamic disease, symptoms can get worse or better really quickly. One of the sites of predilection for leprosy is the testicles, so SURELY. SURELY. *grabs you by the shoulders* it affected testosterone production?!? *starts violently shaking you* the hormone that increases your libido and gives you mood swings??!? WHY DID NO ONE CHECK SOONER
Leprosy can "block" the production of testosterone, and because the body is a Beautiful Machine, it starts producing more LH, which stimulates the production of sex hormones, but because the way is blocked, the LH accumulates. When leprosy "relapses" all of these LH that have been building up, rapidly turn into T, causing mood swings, increased sexual desire, this peaks way more than normal T levels for the average person. I'm not sure why it causes people to be tired after that peak, maybe it takes a toll on the body, or that the hormonal levels stabilize right after which is lower than the peak. Either way, Messed. Up.

Slightly late monthly journal!
First off, the spreadsheet has been updated:
Nothing too drastic here, especially compared to my initial growth spurt. But still… there’s so much, yet so little to talk about.
I’ve been on spiro for a longer time now, and recently increased my estradiol dose. Note that my levels check was before the increased dose- the dates aren’t completely coordinated (they are on my private spreadsheet for my own personal tracking, don’t worry). It’s looking pretty good. Testosterone is well within target levels. E is about the same, which is much lower than I would like it. My endo says that 100-200 is “minimally acceptable”, and wants to shoot even higher than that. That’s comforting, in a way- I’m the slightest bit frustrated that some changes aren’t happening too quickly, but that gives a very distinct avenue for improvement. Ultimately, I’m gonna switch to injection monotherapy, probably around the same time I start prog. So the big change is decreased T. What has that done to me?
First off, the hard measurements. There’s really no surprises here. I’m losing weight, which tracks with my general diet and an increase in exercise levels. It seems to be happening faster than normal, though. Which, is pretty easily explainable by a new variable in the equation: adderall. I started adderall in the middle of the month. I’ve used it sparingly, but everyone I know that takes it told me that weight loss is pretty much unavoidable. I’m certainly still above any point where my weight would be worrying, but I’m gonna have to keep an eye on it. Especially if I want fat tits. As for how the weight loss is happening, I’m very happy with what’s going on. My bust and hip measurements are holding steady, while my waist and underbust are still slightly going down. 
I do know that there’s another source of weight loss, however: muscle mass. With the increase in exercise level has come an increase in exertion for the same results, which has made me slightly dismayed. This is the main HRT effect that I was a little scared of. But honestly, I really only care about the muscle that helps me hike and swim- and if I maintain that better, I think it won’t be too much of an issue. I was never some pariah of physical condition, so I think with training I can even improve my hiking stamina. That’ll be very necessary with my future backpacking plans.
The main thing that I’m REALLY happy about is that, if I squint, I think I can slowly start to see the first hints of facial changes start to come in. They’re subtle, of course. A weird one is that my nose is literally straighter. Y’all don’t see it, but the reason I still shield my face (despite being easily identifiable at this point if you saw me irl and knew this account) is mostly insecurity about my nose and chin. My nose actually physically curves to my right when viewed from the front, and in general, is a huge, classic Roman nose. Looking at head on progress pictures, its actually starting to straighten out. I thought I was imagining things, but I checked in with a couple friends before and after pictures of several years on HRT, and yeah- their noses are different, usually smaller and more symmetrical. Saying that this is a huge relief to me would be an understatement. Additionally, I was insecure about my boxy jawline, but for some reason, it seems to work as a femme feature of my face now- I think slight cheek restructuring helps frame it better. Still not so sure how the chin is gonna turn out. But hey- I started HRT thinking that I would for sure need FFS to pass, but now, I'm far less concerned. I'll at least give it two years.
I’ve also gotten a lot of interesting comments. Several labmates and family members that don’t know I’m transitioning have remarked that my skin looks healthier, and I look younger. I’ve also had noticeable mental health improvement, so I think most people think I’m on some kind of self improvement kick. I mentioned skin care as part of that. We’ll see how long the excuse holds- probably a while, as the changes are so, so subtle at the moment. But shit, I’m only three months in. I’m thrilled.
There’s still no getting rid of my beard shadow. Even though the growth rate of my facial hair has noticeably decreased, the thickness of the basal hairs will always add shading to my face. When I started HRT, I thought it wouldn’t bother me that much until I was ready to socially transition- but tbh, it’s starting to look glaring to me. I’m looking into starting laser sometime in January, and hopefully that’ll help.
Which brings me to the emotional changes. Holy FUCK what a month its been. I’m not gonna expose all of my dirty laundry. But, a mixture of some long term anxieties and a few particular events led to a classic mid-20s “what the fuck am I doing with my life” crisis. One of those long term anxieties was a thought I’m sure many of y’all are familiar with: “I started HRT. Now what? How the fuck am I going to socially transition?”
For a couple days, I was very seriously considering quitting grad school and academia. I’m past that. Tragically, I love science a little too much. I do, however, need a break. I talked to my advisor about taking a hiatus, and he’s fully supportive of the idea. And conveniently, that also provides me with a clean way to simply disappear, and come back as a woman. A nice little break to allow me to socially transition.
But anyways. Here’s my big point here: if I went through something similar pre-HRT, I would’ve reacted completely differently. I would’ve shoved those thoughts deep and let them simmer as a general, background malaise that I would just stew in and suffer. Now? I cried. A lot. Actual fucking tears. I went through a few days of sharp sadness, and then actually fucking processed those emotions. What the fuck? That’s new. It’s insane. I wouldn’t have had the emotional capacity to that before. 
I’m elated. It’s wonderful. It’s a more than welcome change.
But yeah. Steady as she goes. Progress is a little stalled, but both me and my provider are adamant about getting that E up. And I’m still making slow progress as it is.

The final note: sexual function. With the low T… yup, my downstairs functionality has decreased. My ejaculate is clear, and often happens without being fully erect. That said… there’s no way in hell that I would ever trade getting that back for what I have now. My libido is still comes in waves, and is crazy when it comes. The feelings I get from intimate situations now are incredible beyond belief.

Watching how quickly the world turned against Imane Khelif was truly disturbing to watch. It's so fascinating how people are so quick to try and figure out what her genitals are because a white woman sobbed over a punch in a boxing competition.
People go on about high testosterone levels and that it gives someone an advantage, The thing is, thats almost quite literally what a sport is about. You get stronger and better at an activity and it truly depends on your biological advantage. It decides how quickly you can get better at something and if you’re simply born physically stronger.
Imane Khelif was not proven to have XY chromosomes and even then it would not make her less of a woman. It’s odd that non-white women are consistently being accused of being men simply for what? Because their genetics cause them to be hairier? have high testosterone levels? look more “masculine”?
Regardless, instead of being disrespectful to women with Swyer’s Syndrome we could be spreading sympathy and awareness for Women with Swyer's Syndrome. These women typically have to take hormone replacement therapy during early adolescence to even be able to start puberty. It's also important for them to take HRT to reduce the chance of osteopenia and osteoporosis. They also have an increased risk for cancer since their ovaries are replaced with tissue.
Also, the fact they have to go through a whole process of getting an egg or embryo donated if they want to have a child.

Blu-ray Review: Unlawful Entry

Box office draw is anything but predictable, but Hollywood sure likes to hedge its bets. From Scream's teen slasher revival to Paranormal Activity's found footage trend to Marvel's superhero craze, a novel concept that over-performs is almost guaranteed to yield similar projects until audiences tire of the fad. Fatal Attraction launched a cycle of racy thrillers in the early '90s that included the likes of Basic Instinct, Single White Female, The Hand that Rocks the Cradle, Sleeping with the Enemy, and Cape Fear.
While not as well remembered as the aforementioned efforts, Unlawful Entry remains an effective entry in the subgenre from journeyman director Jonathan Kaplan (The Accused, ER). Lewis Colick's (October Sky, Charlie St. Cloud) script may traverse familiar tropes, but Kurt Russell (The Thing), Ray Liotta (Goodfellas), and Madeleine Stowe (12 Monkeys) gracefully elevate the material with their performances.
Bookended by tense home invasion sequences, the 1992 film opens with a burglar breaking into the upscale home of recent Los Angeles transplants Michael (Russell) and Karen Carr (Stowe). Although ultimately unharmed, they're left shaken up by the ordeal after Michael is forced to watch helplessly as the assailant holds Karen at knifepoint. Responding officer Pete Davis (Liotta) goes out of his way to help them feel safer.

Pete presents himself as the sincere lawman at first, but it quickly becomes clear to both the viewer and Michael that he's unhinged. He grows increasingly obsessed with Karen, invading not only the couple's home but also their lives as he does everything in his considerable power to take Michael out of the picture. The third act is exactly the suspenseful thrill-ride you'd want from a movie of this ilk.
While a lesser film would pit Russell and Liotta against one another in a testosterone-fueled stand-off, Unlawful Entry takes a more interesting approach. Although their conflict is not without machismo, their personalities repel one another on a granular level. Beyond coveting his wife, Pete has no respect for Michael. In Pete's mind, he is the alpha male getting his hands dirty and protecting the streets, so he deserves Michael's prosperous life.
Liotta is effectively disarming at first before unraveling into a deranged stalker. Russell is as charming as ever, but he's not afraid to show vulnerability. Stowe brings a cleverness to the damsel in distress. The cast also includes Roger E. Mosley (Magnum P.I.) as Pete's level-headed partner, Ken Lerner (The Goldbergs) as Michael's lawyer, Dick Miller (Gremlins) as an impound clerk, and a young Djimon Hounsou (Guardians of the Galaxy) as a prisoner.

Unlawful Entry is now invading homes on Blu-ray via Scream Factory exclusively on ShoutFactory.com. While the company's limited releases are typically reserved for titles with a more narrow appeal, Unlawful Entry's allotment of 1,620 units sold out in a matter of days, prompting them to increase the run to 2,600 (which brings into question the point of limiting it in the first place, but I digress).
The film is presented in high definition from an existing transfer with 5.1 Surround DTS-HD Master Audio and 2.0 Stereo DTS-HD Master Audio options. The quality is aggressively fine; it certainly won't win any competitions against a modern 4K master, but it's a welcome improvement over the old DVD.
Despite its limited status, new special features were produced: a 28-minute interview Kaplan, who sets the stage by highlighting his genre-hopping career before focusing on Unlawful Entry; an interview with cinematographer Jamie Anderson��(Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Small Soldiers); and an featurette in which music historian Daniel Schweiger breaks down the score by James Horner (Aliens, Avatar).

Archival special features include: a DVD commentary by Kaplan, who notes how he learned how to reflect the subjectivity of human experience in film by watching Alfred Hitchcock and details how the Rodney King riots impacted the movie; a vintage EPK-style featurette with snippets from Kaplan, Russell, Liotta, Stowe, and more; the theatrical trailer; and two TV spots.
In a time when police misconduct is caught on camera on a near-daily basis, Unlawful Entry is all the more relevant over 30 years removed from its original release. Coupled with a severely underrated performance from the late Liotta, the '90s thriller gem begging for rediscovery.

- the acne thing has almost completely missed me. the only time it flares up is when my body "wants" to be in its cycle every few months, which i know by the back pain, cramps and headaches - but so far i've only had two actual cycles since starting and while yes they were painful they were short-lived. - my body temperature is definitely higher. i can tolerate the cold much better and find myself getting hot quicker than before? - my voice is so much lower than it was! so much so that on the odd occasion where people at first call me she, they quickly change to he after i say something to them. I'm getting a lot of "buddy" and "pal" at the moment actually. win? - muscle mass. it's not so obvious until i FlEx but it's absolutely gone up. recently i was able to lift 33kg when i weigh 37kg. madness??? i look unassuming outwardly but i'm much stronger when i apply myself to something. - facial hair is a thing. people keep telling me to shave. NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - not sure if this is just some kind of blip but thought it would be interesting to note: tattoo healing??? all of my other tattoos that i got pre-T would swell MASSIVELY and sting for days. my latest one, from 2 days ago actually, hasn't swollen up nearly as much and i'm not getting any random stinging like i normally would. i know higher testosterone is linked to good wound healing so maybe it's related, maybe not, but tattoos that i have in the same place (just on the other arm) behaved so differently. - interestingly before starting T i was very prone to migraine with aura. a side effect often stated is increase in migraines and… actually i find that i've experienced the opposite! while i do still get headaches and migraines (at work mostly due to dehydration/stress rip) they're so much less common in my day-to-day life. i also haven't had a migraine with aura since starting.
- emotions. whooo boy okay. confounding factors are c-ptsd and did. as a whole things are much more positive! my emotions are level most of the time which is really good as someone who's prone to depression, and i find myself enjoying things much more. HOWEVER. this also means that i struggle to identify when something is Wrong. am i behaving this way because of depression? anxiety? who knows because i can't feel those things in the same way as before. i have a new lexicon of Feelings to navigate and i'm still learning how to verbalize it. it's more difficult to articulate what i feel and why - uhhhh trans swag. - T hasn't stopped me from being british. sorry. send post

Periods, the menstrual cycle and how that could affect your diet and training.
I like many personal trainers, I had no idea how the menstrual cycle could affect strength and endurance training until I took the time to do some research and develop a better understanding of how utilising your cycle to maximise your training can greatly impact results and consistency. 
Now, this information won't be tailored to everyone, as everyone who experiences a menstrual cycle has a different experience. But if we were to assume that the average cycle is 28 days long, the first two weeks is the follicular phase and the latter two weeks is the luteal phase, with ovulation occurring around day 14. 
Estrogen for a long time got a bad wrap when it came to strength training, but it's actually a fantastic hormone. The first two weeks of your cycle, the follicular phase, are going to be some of your best weeks in relation to training. 
Around the time of ovulation you will probably see and increase in performance. You may be able to maintain a more consistent cardiac output during hiit sessions without feeling fatigue as quickly and those personal best during those compound/complex movements such as our bench press, back squat and deadlifts, may be higher. There are a few hormonal changes during this phase, including an increase in testosterone at ovulation which impact our ability to train more efficiently. 
The latter half of your cycle, the luteal phase, is where some women experience premenstrual syndrome. (PMS) For some it can be crippling, it can bring on bouts of depression, cause fatigue and irritability. For others, they're okay. 
From a training perspective in relation to our luteal phase, coordination can go out the window– those unilateral movements can be a bit tricky and we can sometimes experience a decrease in strength. 
During our luteal phase there's also an increase in our metabolic rate. Our requirements for energy increase but most of us don’t make those allowances during dieting protocols, which leads to falling off the wagon. 
So what considerations should we make when we’re trying to optimise our training routine in relation to our cycles? Below are some tips: 
➡️ The first two weeks (Follicular phase) Aim for those personal bests. Your strength will be at its most optimal level and you can utilise this to your advantage by pushing a little harder, lifting heavy and working to max capacity. 
➡️ After ovulation, during that Luteal phase, it may be applicable to do more volume training in terms of reps instead of going for those five RM’s. Lighten the load to something that is maintainable, work on form and time under tension. 
➡️ From a dieting perspective, incorporate extra foods that won’t blow your caloric intake. Things that are possibly low (or high depending on your goals) calorie, high protein, or fruit that will help to reduce those sweet cravings we all know about. 
The more that we can understand the fluctuations and differences in training and dieting, the more we can better define our relationships with our bodies.
