on the list of little comic ideas i have, brick comparing me to a dog and mordy being confused and a little irritated about it. 😔
i'm assuming mordy has never met a dog, probably only knows about them because of brick. neither has my s/i, since they've never left pandora, the closest thing to a dog they've ever met is a skag. but yeah brick comments on their doggish personality and mordy is like "what the hell is that supposed to mean"
brick's like "no wait, watch" and calls to my s/i. "yo red!!! you want a TREAT?"
s/i drops whatever they're doing, probably sitting somewhere doodling. head shoots up. big smile. "TREAT?? WHAT KIND OF TREAT!?"
brick thinks for a sec. "uhh...HOW BOUT SOME JERKY?"
"HELLS YEAH, SAY NO MORE MY MAN" fuckin scrambling to their feet, speed walking over, just SO ready for TREAT
mordy still just looks confused but also charmed. shakes his head a little at my s/i, who paused their jerky devouring. mouth FULL.
"whah? WHAH HAPPEN?"
#therian self shipper moment..............#how to incorporate canine into myself on a planet with no canines#rambles

ART SCHOOL | Q&A with BOSS DOG
Mystical felines and shamanistic canines are just some creatures that lurk from the realms artist Mikey “Boss Dog” McKennedy. We’ve been following Boss Dog’s dark artworks, which appeared on a series of decks for Zero skateboards. We’re excited to chat with Mikey and find out more about his work, his process, and his upcoming animation project for The Planet of Doom!
Photography courtesy of the artist | Portrait by @enginethusiast
Introduce yourself? My name is Boss Dog. I live in Portland OR. I’m from small towns in Texas and Washington. I’ve lived here and there and everywhere in between!
How would you describe your work to someone who is just coming across it? Occult D&D chopper nerd who loves cats and dogs!
How did you start from doodling and drawing to what you do now? Doodling is a gateway drug. For me at least. I really want to see how far I could take it. I am a huge believer in just putting in the hours. So, it evolved over time — over countless hours of drawing and just pushing myself. I used to only be able to sit and draw for like, 2-3 hours. Now I can put in a 12 + hour day and — while it’s exhausting — I can get the work in.
Who and what were some of your early artistic influences? I am an 80′s child. So, early inspo is all comic books, heavy metal, and D&D. I imitated comic books. Just tried to mimic everything I saw.
What are some things that inspire the drawings you make? Probably the same stuff that’s influenced me as a kid! I I think at my core I am a shy day dreamer and a nerd, so I just like to imagine different worlds where grim reapers are magical wizards who ride dragons and encounter mystical beasts. I think I feel more comfortable in those worlds than planet earth haha.
When did you find yourself incorporating felines and canines in your works as characters? That’s all David from Made In Brooklyn silk screeners! He suggested it one day. He wanted me to paint his cat like one of my wizards. After that people would hit me up and I never say no so, it’s just still going! I absolutely love dogs and cats, so I am not complaining.
Take us through your artistic process? What’s a typical day in the studio like? I do a ton of gestural drawing. I don’t ever draw anything right or well the first time haha. So, I just sit there and draw super sloppy and refine as I go. I would consider myself obsessive compulsive when I draw, so I am really in to “getting it right,” however, that’s defined in the moment. I like to keep a lot of projects goIng at the same time mainly because I love gestural drawing and sketching, but I sometimes put off the hard work of inking.
What are your essential art tools and materials? Non photo blue pencils, Liquitex acrylic paint, Molotov acrylic paint pens, micron pens, and cardboard … and podcasts … lots of podcasts (shout out to Reply All, The Nod, Hello From The Magic Tavern, Last Podcast on the Left) !!! What artists inspire you these days? Oh man, too many to name all of them! I absolutely love Corinne Halbert’s work. I love John Black and Matt Stikker and Orion Landau. Skip Class is always killing it. Lou Death is a beast. Bat Dog. Skinner. Cvspe. Elle Taylor, Kyle Sauter, Naoya Muga, Jacki Jo Koester, Matt Kerley, Sketchy Tank and the entire Swamp Wizards group. Mister Tucks. David Paul Seymour. I’ll think of 20 more 20 minutes from now!
What has been the most challenging project you’ve worked on? How did you overcome those obstacles and what did you take away from it? Probably the one I am working on now. The Planet of Doom asked me to illustrate a scene. I’ve never been part of an animation project until this one and another one recently so that’s a real learning curve. Plus it’s like 30 + illustrations, and it can just be mentally draining. It’s so tempting to half ass it just to get through it. I am the type of person who isn’t happy unless I am DONE with a project, so the discipline required to really make this right is challenging.
What advice would you give someone who wants to follow in your footsteps and pursue art? I don’t have a traditional path at all! So, I wouldn’t suggest following me haha! It took me a long time to figure out what I wanted to be when I grow up – and I am pretty sure I am still not a real adult haha! I spent most of my young adult life playing in hardcore and punk bands and partying way too hard and definitely not thinking about a whole lot as far as long term planning goes. I definitely had to grow up and change some of my ways to be able to really dedicate myself to art. I think I now look at art and drawing the way a horse with blinders on sees things. I tune the whole world out and put my head down and just move forward. I try not to get caught up in what others are doing or worse, wondering what others are thinking! My advice is to just focus on what’s in front of you. Everything else will fall in to place.
What’s your best Art School tip that you want to share with folks? This sounds SOOOO CHEESY haha , but I really mean it: be positive. It’s actually really easy to be negative and talk shit on other artists/scenes/styles/etc. I have that critical mind in me that can be so harsh. When I realized that it’s harder to be and remain positive than to wallow in dickheadedness, I took that as a personal challenge. I don’t always succeed. On my best days I do, on my bad days I can only try and not say the evil shit that is in my head out loud!
What are your favorite style of VANS? Slip-ons. All day every day. I have moved to the Slip-On Lites as I’ve gotten older. They are amazing! I want Vans to make more patterns and colors in the Ultra Lites. So comfy. I love em!
Anything you can share that is coming up? Be on the lookout for The Planet of Doom, and I am also doing some illustrations that will be used for a new Red Fang video that should be out in the fall. Hit up my web store and commission me to paint your dog or cat (or really any type of pet) as a magical warrior wizard!!!

Sun Salutations - Part 1 - Tadasana
There is absolutely nothing that appears to cross all borders of yoga styles as clearly as sun salutations. Naturally there are variations on the style, however it appears that all styles do them. Sun Salutations put motion through every one of the joints of the body as well as relocate in several directions. Maybe we have a little problem in searching for state, a spin, yet many activities are represented.
Since it is so global in one form or an additional, it has constantly captivated me and also at different times along my journey, asked me to look deeper right into its definition. We are admiring the sunlight, why? Surya used normally means sunlight. But Surya is likewise a god as illustrated in the image on a chariot. The sunlight is the bringer of life and health.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/44eb2cf79aefef5d729b5ca6a3984886/00f98ea842454a14-00/s540x810/8c9da67045b0af351774979808cd57c5713d8ea8.jpg)
But sun salutations go even deeper. It is a mode of worship and also the most advantageous means of doing the namaskaras is to do 108 per day. Not just by themselves, however with rule that is related to each motion. You can have a look at the concepts at Wikipedia.org
Alas, I am simply an inadequate little anatomy instructor, what do I recognize of these deeper a lot more esoteric things, right? The sunlight is the seed of life for the entire world. Without it we are nothing but a cool, dark planet. In a comparable means, the movements of sunlight salutations are the seeds of several various other positions. As I have actually already mentioned, we discover that sun salutations take us through a large series of activities. Without doing them initially, don't we really feel a little bit chilly and also ran out as well?
The various other component that I locate vital in sunlight salutations is the vinyasa. Despite the system or style of sun salutation going on, the breath and the activity are linked together. Tying this along with the namaskaras is the literal translation of the word vinyasa. Vi suggests 'to go, to move, to cast forth, to conceive, or to begin from'. Nyasa implies 'putting, growing, or compliance'. You might incorporate both components to get "relocate in prostration."
OK ... let's jump on to the composition. That's why you're below besides, isn't it? The strategy for this little collection on sun salutations is to require time and break down the sunlight salutations into each of the significant elements and explore several of the why's and also why not's. As with all things, you can reason or suggest any position you such as and also these are just my observations.
The Body in Action
The main thing that I enjoy most around sun salutations is that the body is in movement for so much of it. Although we usually speak about the body in static stances during a yoga exercise class, for me, there is a lot extra exposed in the way in which all the parts incorporate as well as work together.
During sunlight salutations we see the patterns of movement reveal in manner ins which we are not likely to see when the individual is static. To be reasonable, when the body is fixed, we see things that could be concealed when the body is moving!
I am frequently considering a collection of movements as they happen and right here are a few of the thoughts or inquiries that drift around between my ears.
With how much effort as well as focus is the pupil in samastitihi or tadasana?
When they increase their arms airborne, where are they relocating from, exactly how have they revolved their arms, or otherwise, and also at what point in the movement?
Do they backbend when they get to up?
When they dive onward, exactly how far back do their hips go about their ankles?
Does this state something about their hamstrings?
Do they flex their knees whatsoever or keep them directly when they fold up forward?
Are their legs participated in the front?
Are they using their arms to deepen their forward bend or are they utilizing hip flexors?
When they search for, from where do they launch the movement?
Are they on their fingertips, flattening their back or are they keeping their hands flat?
Where have they put their hands?
When they leap or go back, do they drift or do they land hard?
Do they keep their shoulders moving on or do they relocate back to a down dog-like position?
Do they understand exactly how to stabilize their upper body and also their shoulder band at high plank or as they lower down into chaturanga?
Do they move right into higher canine in a manner that adds tension to their shoulders as well as wrists?
Are they moving with their entire spine or just flexing in the reduced back?
Are they making up with their feet, shoulders, or neck while in higher dealing with dog?
When they relocate from up dog to down pet dog, where do they move from?
Can they manage and also regulate their breath or do they hold it in specific areas in the movements?
When they step or jump forward, how are they doing this?
Is their weight in their feet?
Is their weight in their hands?
Where are their shoulders when they land, if they jump?
Reverse the very first few inquiries right here ...
Again, these are the items that I would certainly be refining without thinking concerning it. Of course, none reach the interpretation of what all of it means, but that's the factor of this write-up series. There are a range of methods that sunlight salutations are carried out. There are additionally great reasons to stress various elements at various times for students, depending on the level of their practice as well as abilities.
Samasthiti or Tadasana
The Feet
There is a great deal of job that a person can do in tadasana or samasthiti. It develops our neutral area for standing yoga positions. One more way of stating that, is that all standing positions evolve from or arise from this basic standing stance. I understand there are educators out there who spend hrs on describing all of things you "ought to" be feeling and experiencing in this position however I'm not one of them. That's not to state that there is absolutely nothing to do. I have kept a much more generalized internal feeling of interest throughout the whole body.
Instead, I utilize tadasana from the teaching viewpoint as a chance to observe the student as well as what placement, or imbalance problems they may have while static. I then watch them move with and via that alignment/misalignment as well as allow that educate me and also the specific directions I may offer to them.
Samasthiti is classically finished with the feet with each other and tadasana extra typically with them at hip size apart. These feel like easy things to do, however not for everyone.
I have actually fulfilled people along the way that have legs that bow inward, in some cases referred to as knocked-knees. If he or she places their feet together as in samastitihi, their knees would certainly not just touch, they would certainly need to melt into each other or cross before or behind the other. These individuals are an exemption to the rule for samasthiti and would certainly need to have their feet divided a little bit. I have actually fulfilled some that were compelled by teachers to keep their feet together as well as after that bend one knee slightly to move it out of the way!
The next problem at the feet is having them straight. Well, what is directly? Are we looking at the inner or external side of the foot to figure out this?
Those that produce their placement with the external edges of the foot will have huge toes touching and also heels a little apart. Aligning the external sides of the foot with the outer sides of the floor covering revolves the thighs internal and the knees with them. There are claims of this having some result on mula bandha, I haven't discovered it myself. It certainly feels different, however there doesn't seem to be much anatomical basis for it.
What is essential to me from a physiological perspective is the instructions that the knees are pointing when standing, walking as well as moving through yoga exercise postures. Why? Since it's the knee that is one of the most at risk joint in the leg.
If the knee is right, the turning that we see at the foot actually originates from the hip. If the knee is bent, it's feasible that the turning is happening at the knee joint itself. The ankle joint does not rotate.
Any time the foot is going one method and also the hip is going the other, there will certainly be force passing via the knee joint. It's not like we're made out of glass or anything, nonetheless, with time these pressures can build up. So, when the feet are not in the location you would like them to be or you determine to change their placement, do not fail to remember to look at the entire leg, not simply one end of them.
The Pelvis
There is additionally a whole lot of interest provided to the pelvis and also to its placement when standing directly in samastitihi or tadasana. Personally, I believe the whole, 'tuck your tailbone' thing has actually been overdone for the majority of people. I obtain the seed of it, however I do not believe it was ever implied as a gross activity the method I commonly see individuals doing it.
First, check out the individual and also their makeup. There are certainly people who have a hips that is slanted forward and also down way too much. By way too much, I mean it's a pattern that might be part of various other troubles for that person. These people might need to re-train certain tissues to get the hips in the best location, as well as yes, they must do the gross activity of putting their tailbone or raising their pubic bone.
If you don't have this strong anterior tilt going on, then the activity is a lot more refined. In this situation, it's truly about engaging the pelvic floor slowly and also gradually, which has a result on the tail bone straight. This ends up being less of a pelvic activity and also even more of a sacral tilt. If you intend to learn more about sacral movement, examine out the article and the comments in this old Nutation/Counternutation article.
This more subtle motion is just one of grounding. Whether you're doing samastitihi or tadasana, you are indicated to be based and firm.

So, Your Dog Has Canine Cancer — Here’s What to do Next

One in four dogs will be diagnosed with canine cancer in their lifetime, and cancer is the second leading cause of death in older animals. That’s “16 billion dollars this year in cancer veterinary care, up from 12 billion two years ago,” explains Rodney Habib, an award-winning blogger, lecturer and founder of the pet health movement, Planet Paws. So, if your dog gets diagnosed with canine cancer, what do you do? There are a dizzying array of treatment options and selecting a course of treatment for your dog is a very personal decision. You should feel empowered to ask your vet a lot of questions, seek second — or even third — opinions and not feel guilty for whatever treatment(s) you decide are best for your dog.
First: Breathe and Consult the Experts
The first thing to remember when your dog gets a canine cancer diagnosis? Breathe. Photography ©vchal | Thinkstock.
“The biggest piece of advice, the second you get that call, is to breathe,” Habib encourages. “That is a really good time for reflection and mediation. You’ve got to pull it together for your pet.” He also acknowledges that this is easier to say than do, but maintains that negative energy on our part can actually make our dogs even sicker. “The second all your energy and emotions shift, your dog will pick up on that,” he advises.“Your dog [will] become scared.” Habib says this may lead to raised blood sugars, and increased growth of cancerous tumors.
Dr. Barbara Biller, Associate Professor of Oncology at the Colorado State University Flint Animal Cancer Center and a member of the American Animal Hospital Association Oncology Task Force, who we recently spoke with to help us understand tumors in dogs, suggests this first step after your dog receives a canine cancer diagnosis. “Schedule an appointment with a board-certified veterinary oncologist, since it’s our job to know about the all potential treatment options — conventional and new, clinical trials, etc.,” she says.
Traditional or Western Medicine Treatment for Canine Cancer:
If your dog is diagnosed with canine cancer, treatment options look similar to what is presented to a human battling cancer. Surgery, radiation, chemotherapy or a combination of these treatments are all likely what your veterinarian will recommend.
Veterinary medical advancements continue to provide pet parents with new and better cancer treatments specifically for dogs. “In the last couple of years, there are actually chemotherapy drugs that are designed just for dogs,” Dr. Biller shares. “These are dog-only, chemotherapy-type drugs that are potentially more effective for dogs and are less expensive for owners.”
Holistic Veterinarian Treatment for Canine Cancer:
According to the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association (AHVMA), “The techniques used in holistic medicine are gentle, minimally invasive, and incorporate patient well-being and stress reduction.” Treatment from a holistic veterinarian will focus on “taking in the whole picture of the patient — the environment, the disease pattern, the relationship of pet with owner — and developing a treatment protocol using a wide range of therapies for healing.” Interested in finding a holistic veterinarian in your area? The AHVMA has an interactive directory on ahvma.org.
Integrative Veterinary Medicine for Canine Cancer:
Another approach to treatment is integrative medicine. The Integrative Veterinary Center describes integrative medicine as a focus “on treating the whole animal, partnership between the client and the veterinarian and use of all appropriate therapeutic options to achieve optimal wellness.” Specifically, this means a veterinarian who is open to utilizing non-conventional treatment methods including massages, flower essences and herbal supplements alongside traditional or Western veterinary medical interventions.
Consult With Specialists, No Matter What
“The best place to start after hearing the news of a cancer diagnosis is a visit to any boarded veterinary oncologist, no matter if they are in private practice or academia,” Dr. Biller recommends. If your dog was recently diagnosed with cancer, and you need a referral to a specialist, Dr. Biller suggests checking out the Veterinary Cancer Society. Its website includes a searchable directory for veterinary oncologists across the country.
Don’t have specialists near you? Habib says another option for dogs is to “pay for a remote visit by phone or by Skype.” He found that the cost for a Skype consultation is generally comparable to an office visit, but enables you to see specialists anywhere in the country. Those specialists will be able to video call with you and your dog, as well as gain access to digital copies of your dog’s medical records sent by your vet.
Above All: Trust Yourself. You Are Your Dog’s Biggest Advocate.
Habib began his journey into canine health and longevity in a quest to treat his own dog after her cancer diagnosis. Although he worked closely with eight different veterinarians to heal his dog, he maintained a very active role in his dog’s cancer treatments. “The best doctor, the best researcher is you,” he says. “It’s your animal. It’s your pet. It’s your lifeline. My dog is my life. She is my whole life, it’s up to me to do that research to try to find what I need to do to make her better.”

The Ultimate Gravel-Grinding Buddy Trip
“A little public-service announcement,” declares off-road driving legend Rebecca Rusch, additionally generally referred to as “the Queen of Pain.” My childhood buddy Adam Willner and I lean in, together with maybe 200 different cyclists. We’ve every traveled many a whole bunch of miles—I’ve come from Texas, Adam from California—within the identify of two-wheeled journey and affirming 40 years of friendship on this September weekend. Tomorrow we’ll experience an off-road problem, which Rusch unabashedly calls Rebecca’s Private Idaho (RPI). The notably masochistic, century-length possibility that we’ve chosen is appropriately branded the “Big Potato.”
The Masters Athlete
Who says the younger weapons get to have all of the enjoyable? In this column, we inform the tales of athletes dwelling full, match, high-performance lives—and for whom age is actually only a quantity.
Read all the stories→
Standing on the foot of a fairly Idaho meadow, Rusch faces a gathering of RPI contributors who’ve opted to attend the Saturday pre-ride. We’re taking a break midway by way of the 20-mile, out-and-back exercise, and Rusch is bent over a beast of a highway bike, and giving welcome steering. Adam and I, and little doubt many within the helmeted tribe throughout us, might know loads about biking. But the 2 of us can discuss a sliver of nothing in regards to the type of driving referred to as gravel grinding, which we’ll be doing, for a lot of sizzling and dusty miles, inside 24 hours. We’re grinder rookies, and we’re studying that, within the easiest of phrases, gravel grinding is highway driving on the whole lot however highway.
“It’s a lot more secure and safe to descend in your drops. You’re all tucked in,” says Rusch, flexing her solid arms in order that she will be able to wedge her fingers into the curves of road-bike fashion handlebars. The bike beneath her has, for a road-type bike anyway, supremely fats and knobby tires, in addition to disc brakes. All normal gravel-grinding fare. “If you’re descending up here on washboards and going super-fast?” she says, tapping on the tops of the handlebars. “You have a lot more opportunities to come off.”
Rusch says that the ultimate, bumpy, 1,500-foot, dirt-and-dust descent forward of the end lacks a guardrail, and that the drop-off is typically 1,000 toes.
“You know, it’s narrow,” she provides.
Welcome to the type of stupid-great journey that 2 young-thinking however previous and nostalgic buddies may embark on. RPI, which is in its 5th 12 months and climbs over 5,000 toes throughout practically 94 miles by way of south-central Idaho’s Pioneer Mountains, initially felt way more doable and digestible to a few bike-loving associates than, say, a weeklong Ride the Rockies. Adam and I figured that we’d body a bro weekend in Idaho’s mountainous Ketchum and Sun Valley terrain round RPI. When we weren’t on our saddles, we’d relax on the condominium, or feed at some oft-Yelped, quaint eatery. On the continuum of BFF reunions, we thought that this 1 would lean nearer to a spa weekend than to Deliverance.
But then the gravel reared its head.
A day earlier and on Adam’s and my first Idaho experience collectively, we’d loaded up on a Mexican lunch, pulled on spandex, and grabbed our bikes. We agreed to pedal at a simple tempo on one of many many dust roads main from city after which… we suffered. Our lungs, which reside quite a bit nearer to sea stage than Ketchum’s 6,000 toes, groped for oxygen. Our 52-year-old legs felt picket on a climb that didn’t ease a lot over 10 miles.
The worst, nonetheless, was but to return. The final time I’d descended miles of dust on a suspension-free bike, the Berlin Wall remained upright. Even within the 1980s, I used to be nonetheless driving dust on a very fat-tired mountain bike. In Idaho, then again, I used to be on my new, rugged aluminum cyclocross bike, which I’d fitted with oversize tires and extra-low gearing, particularly for RPI. A mechanic at my native store referred to as my experience a “Frankenbike.” It was costly, too. But hey: Can you place a value on lifelong friendship?
Frankenbike, cyclocross bike, no matter—the dirt-road descent seized up my shoulder blades and fingers. My ligaments and muscle tissue shook like cube in a cup. Adam, on his new carbon-fiber gravel grinder, fared no higher. By the time we reached pavement, I felt that a few getting older athletes have been about 20 years too late for the second.
A day later, and with Adam and I nonetheless smarting, Rusch concluded her public service announcement by telling us and the remainder of the pre-ride crowd to relaxation up forward of tomorrow’s RPI. Rather matter-of-factly, she informed us that if we needed to be Big Potatoes by day’s finish, we’d must suck it up.
Persistent shoulder ache or no, I nonetheless felt overwhelmingly completely happy. The love and understanding of an previous pal is certainly one of life’s most wonderful intangibles. You can’t put a metric on, say, the soothing really feel of cool dew assembly naked toes on a crisp morning. Or how nice it’s to look at your canine go legs-up on a patch of grass, and zealously roll and roll on its again.
The identical type of pleasure comes from a pal gently laughing at you whenever you get pissed off—as you probably did in his firm 35 years in the past when you have been touring overseas collectively, when he watched as you pushed again on a prickly inn-keeper over the cash spent for a dumpy room in Brixton—since you’re burning by way of all of the zip-ties whereas wrongly fastening your racing chip to your bike fork. Doesn’t actually matter that you simply’re not an adolescent.
“Drew, it’ll be OK,” he says with a chuckle as I fume over a job poorly finished. “We’ll get more zip-ties back at the packet pickup tables.”
Adam is gray-haired however nonetheless ever cheerful, with a spherical, unlined face that defies the burden of life encountered by so many people in center age. Adam additionally seems about as lean and powerful as he did after we met as freshmen at San Francisco University High School again within the fall of 1979. And the place he as soon as was an entrepreneurial restaurateur who solely often discovered time to experience, Adam and his spouse, Marta, are actually practically empty nesters. Over the final decade he’s gone from biking fanatic to mileage monster whereas thriving as a father, chef, and host. In 2017 alone, my pal has ridden 3 organized 200-mile rides.
(Courtesy Andrew Tilin)
I’ve been driving since I used to be 18, and my 3 oldest associates on the planet have every been a part of the journey. In my early 20s, I toured throughout Europe with Dave Rosenthal. I raced bikes all around the west with Peter Wood in my 30s and 40s. Now on a brisk Idaho morning in summer time 2017, Adam and I have been about to pile extra tales onto a friendship that already included recollections of high-school events, weddings, births of kids, and celebrations of households and careers. Adam and I fasten our helmet straps earlier than strolling out the condominium door.
Glorious intangibles. Adam’s cleats click on into place, and I watch as my longtime pal takes his first pedal strokes towards the RPI begin line.
Soon, after virtually 1,000 riders bow their heads in downtown Ketchum for “America the Beautiful,” I do what any compulsive, longtime, self-important bike racer does: I drop all of the riders that I can, together with my greatest pal. The four-mile dust climb up Trail Creek Road close to the beginning of RPI performs to my scrawny body, and my usually quick however intense coaching. Adam, whose pure bulk steered him to play lacrosse in highschool, nonetheless has 40 kilos on me.
“Hey, Texas,” Adam says as he comes up behind me, two-thirds of the best way to Trail Creek’s 7,800-foot summit. “Nice riding.”
Even although we haven’t hatched a real technique for RPI, Adam and I each perceive that the day’s precedence is to tackle the experience, and the bumps and dust and warmth, collectively. Sure, some contributors race RPI. Former Tour de France rider Ted King is amongst RPI’s entrants. No doubt he’s already many miles forward of us.
The prime of the climb brings a number of rewards. At the go an enormous and delightful basin contained in the Sawtooth National Forest, which incorporates broad peaks, open grassland, and clusters of evergreens, lays forward of us. Maybe better of all, the limitless bumps and ripples of the Trail Creek climb give method to prolonged stretches of easy and quick dust.
Adam seems over his shoulder as I push myself to remain on his wheel. Clearly he’s having fun with the flat and rolling terrain. “Like pavement!” he yells, and for possibly 9 miles we frequently discover ourselves grouped with different riders and driving roadie fashion. We draft, and take pulls main others.
We additionally owe some gratitude to our tires, or extra particularly our tire pressures. Gravel grinders obsess over tire firmness the best way Taylor Swift sweats shades of purple lipstick. Too a lot air in gravel grinder tires and also you’ll really feel each pebble. Too little and also you may flat, because the tire deforms on massive hits and both pinches a gap in your tube or maybe, on tubeless tires, causes a sidewall to tear. But get the air stress excellent and a fats gravel grinder tire gives a cheerful mix of velocity, traction, and shock absorption. Adam and I had picked up some intel throughout the pre-ride: run our tires at 30 to 40 kilos per sq. inch (PSI), which represented quite a bit much less air than we’d used for our first 2 days of Idaho driving.
(Courtesy Andrew Tilin)
RPI is going nice—our legs buzzing, our asses and fingers retaining sensation—when, about 35 miles into the experience and on the thick gravel of East Fork Road, the experience will get higher. None apart from Rusch latches onto our group of eight.
“That a way, ladies, looking strong,” says Rusch to the 4 girls amongst us. She’s all smiles below her Red Bull helmet. “Keep rotating off the front.”
Rusch is chatty, pulling out of the slipstream as a way to experience alongside me. Only certainly one of us fights for breath as we discuss, and it’s not the girl who owns a primary (feminine) ascent on Yosemite’s El Capitan, as soon as raced for prime worldwide adventure-racing groups, and has gained the Leadville Trail 100 MTB (100-mile) mountain-bike race 4 occasions throughout a profession as an out of doors athlete that has spanned decades.
“Several years ago, one of my sponsors told me: you have to go do this event in Kansas,” says Rusch, referring to gravel grinding’s iconic race, the Dirty Kanza 200. “I thought, that sounds heinous. I’m a mountain biker. That will be death by boredom.”
But Rusch beloved how the 200-mile race meshed the calls for of driving on- and off-road. She’s now gained the DK200 3 times. “The technical aspects of the uneven surfaces felt a lot more like mountain biking than road riding,” she says as my bike steers nervously and solely semi-straight by way of 50 yards of deep gravel. “Someone couldn’t just ride in a pack and then outsprint you for a win.”
Rusch introduced RPI to her adopted hometown of Ketchum in 2013, and exactly as a result of she’s the Queen of Pain, Rusch believes that she’s attracted a disproportionately giant chunk of feminine riders (about 30 p.c). It’s additionally no accident that gravel grinding normally and RPI particularly (common race age: 46) carry out many older athletes who’re quite a bit like me and Adam: getting older riders who don’t all the time wish to tangle with site visitors or with hard-charging pelotons in Gran Fondos or highway races. Instead we’re discovering enjoyable driving squirrelly highway bikes over dust, whereas attempting to win another bout of rider-versus-the-elements.
RPI stays enjoyable even after Rusch is lengthy gone, and Adam and I are just a little greater than midway finished. Then I get a flat.
What does an actual pal do whenever you’re sizzling, soiled, thirsty, and watching your new, $55, tubeless entrance tire that had been crammed to precisely the suitable PSI proceed to seep goopy sealant, and air, courtesy of a sidewall tear? He pumps. He pumps like a madman.
“Drew, maybe we can keep it filled long enough to reach the next rest stop,” says Adam, his complete physique shifting like a piston in time with the hand pump that’s respiratory just a little life into my tire. “I don’t think we’re terribly far away.”
My shoulder blades had already been tingling for some time, and my fingers have been drained. An uncomplaining, salt-stained Adam cannot be feeling significantly better. I don’t understand how he’s capable of pump so furiously.
“OK, bud. Thank you,” I say, lifting my leg over my bike’s body. “Let’s try it.”
Slowly and now actually feeling each seam within the dust, Adam and I creep for miles earlier than we attain the help station. When we depart, my mortally wounded entrance tire is now armed with a tube, with an empty energy-gel wrapper performing as a liner on the place of the tear. In the hopes of reaching the end line, the tire now has the qualities of a taut balloon: it’s extra-firm as a way to greatest keep away from flatting once more.
(Courtesy Andrew Tilin)
For a number of miles of driving over washboard highway and sloppy gravel, the Frankenbike resembles a jackhammer. Nerves in my neck and higher again really feel like they’re aflame. I quietly throw myself a pity social gathering. This is the dumbest fucking sport ever, I say to myself. What idiot rides 100 off-road miles on a motorbike that’s as stiff as an I-beam?
A short time later, I discover that Adam is slowing. He retains altering gears, which seemingly means he is looking for a pedaling cadence that may ship much less ache to his legs. He drinks quite a bit from his bottles.
Now my pal wants a pal, and that notion completely invigorates me. I catch Adam’s eye and level to my rear wheel. As instructed, he traces up his bike behind mine.
The highway rolls up and down. The gravel goes from soupy to nonexistent to soupy once more. Bumps come and go, pickup vehicles pulling 5th wheels cowl us with extra Idaho mud, and 2 exceptionally giant deer—possibly they’re elk, actually we’re too drained to inform—dash throughout the highway simply forward of us. The last, 1,500-foot, dust plummet again to the outskirts of Ketchum is insultingly painful, a real violation of my physique’s connective tissue greatest dealt with by—sure, Rebecca Rusch—staying low in my handlebars. Adam regains power and takes the lead, and after seven taxing hours, we end what we’d began. We are “Big Potatoes,” and solely two-and-a-half hours behind winner Ted King.
In Ketchum, Adam and I unfold our our bodies off our bikes, and shortly thereafter, drink beer and eat grilled cheese-and-bacon sandwiches. Then we eat hamburgers and fries. Then we purchase 2 pints of ice cream.
“You know, I thought about Advil a lot,” Adam says again on the condominium, between spoonfuls of our chilly and creamy, salted-caramel reward. “I mean, that descent was not comfortable, or fun. It wasn’t scary so much as something to just endure.”
He swallows another chew of ice cream. “But weren’t those some great views?” he asks.

Dr. Biller, Associate Professor of Oncology at the Colorado State University Flint Animal Cancer Center and a member of the American Animal Hospital Association Oncology Task Force, who we recently spoke with to help us understand tumors in dogs, suggests this first step after your dog receives a canine cancer diagnosis. “Schedule an appointment with a board-certified veterinary oncologist, since it’s our job to know about the all potential treatment options — conventional and new, clinical trials, etc.,” he says.

New Notable-Earth May be Nice Yet for Locating Signs of Life
Astronomers have located a temperate planet a bit bigger and bulkier than Earth orbiting a small megastar simply forty light-years away. The newly announced global will be some of the Excellent targets to look for Symptoms of Life elsewhere in the cosmos.
“Small worlds are common,” says Lauren Weiss of the Université de Montréal. And this planet, she says, is one of the closest known rocky worlds out of doors our solar machine. “It’s in our sun’s outside.”
Using a telescope in Chile, astronomers watched the planet cross the face of a red dwarf big name known as LHS 1140, inside the constellation Cetus. The sector, named LHS 1140b, is set 1.4 times wider than Earth and it sits easily in an orbit wherein liquid water could float on its floor.
The use of a distinct telescope in Chile, the crew then monitored how a good deal the planet’s gravity tugs on its megastar, allowing them to decide that LHS 1140b is set 6.6 instances as massive as Earth. Which means the little global is rocky, perhaps with a big iron middle surrounded with the aid of a thin mantle—sort of like an overgrown Mercury, comments Laura Schaefer of Arizona State College.
“We nonetheless do not know a lot approximately it although, so it’ll be simply thrilling as we get greater facts,” she says.
The invention crew is, in particular, excited about staring at the newfound world due to the fact it’s far close sufficient to Earth for present telescopes to tell whether it has an atmosphere and, in that case, whether or not its air includes Signs of alien Lifestyles.
“The scientist in me wants to be First-rate cautious and recollect all the reasons why we may not find Life on earth,” says study chief Jason Dittmann of Harvard College, whose crew describes the brand new planet today in Nature.
“However, I also like a good guess and might be a mystery optimist, so I might region my guess that Lifestyles is not unusual in the universe and that it could even be on LHS 1140b.”
Including UP THE Evidence nowadays, greater than 3, four hundred planets are recognized to orbit different stars, and as telescopes and watching techniques have progressed, an increasing variety of latest discoveries are those small, likely rocky worlds that dangle to stars an awful lot smaller than the sun.
Ultimate yr, scientists revealed that 3 Earth-length worlds orbit a small, close by megastar called TRAPPIST-1. Then, an Earth-length international orbiting the nearest superstar to our personal, a tempestuous purple dwarf called Proxima Centauri, zoomed in and stole the trio’s thunder. No longer to be undone, scientists revealed in advance this yr that TRAPPIST-1 hosts No longer simply 3, however at the least seven worlds, a handful of which may be habitable.
And Closing week, scientists from Europe and the U.Okay. announced that they’d detected an atmosphere round a close-by exoplanet referred to as GJ 1132b—the smallest such world to offer up any clues about its gassy elements. The achievement is appealing proof that spying on molecules within the atmospheres of rocky worlds is possible with today’s gadgets.
All of this adds as much as massive hopes for LHS 1140b. None of the planets discovered to date can be defined as simply Earth-like, when you consider that we don’t realize enough about them to make that evaluation. however this global might also offer our First-rate shot But at Including up attractive trends that Can be friendly to Life.
First, the planet’s density suggests it’s far solid, the sort of area wherein Lifestyles may want to thrive on, underneath, or above the floor. A number of the TRAPPIST-1 worlds may also test this box, too, but a lot of their compositions are nevertheless mysterious.
“Even small planets … aren’t always ‘terrestrial’ worlds just like the Earth,” Weiss says. these different planets ought to comprise a smattering of rock however have surfaces smothered by using thick shrouds of gasoline that are disastrous for complex Existence.
Yet, “the excessive density and small length of [LHS 1140b] suggest that a combination of iron and silicates—the identical rocky substances that constitute the Earth—may want to incorporate this planet,” she says.
We’ve been indoors, dragging all wintry weather, and if you’re like me, you’re searching out a few critical idea for the summer time months. As an author of a happiness book myself, I have a tendency to be picky approximately what I examine—it desires to be inspiring, smart (studies-subsidized) and unique—that combination is uncommon however always a winner!
