How Much Do Systems Matter?
This post is directly inspired by the video "You shouldn't use DnD for narrative campaigns." by Questing Beast (aka Ben Milton) about the Polygon article "Worlds Beyond Number is teaching me things that no D&D book can" by Charlie Hall.
The video and article basically posit the following:
TTRPGs can use concretely designed procedures for certain types of challenges and scenarios while having much looser procedures for other types of challenges or scenarios
Just because a TTPRG has less thorough rules on a type of challenge or scenario than a different RPG tackling the same subject matter doesn't automatically make the former worse at being used for these scenarios than the latter
Depending on the preferences of the table, having a robust mechanical framework for one element of gameplay while lacking that for other types of gameplay may be preferrable than having robust mechanical frameworks for both
Having distinct game mechanics for narrative progression and character interactions is uncommon in D&D and derived games, but is very common in story games, e.g. most Powered by the Apocalypse games.
The Polygon article includes this quote by Worlds Beyond Number's Brennan Lee Mulligan: "[People say that] because D&D has so many combat mechanics, you are destined to tell combat stories. I fundamentally disagree. Combat is the part I’m the least interested in simulating through improvisational storytelling. So I need a game to do that for me, while I take care of emotions, relationships, character progression, because that shit is intuitive and I understand it well. I don’t intuitively understand how an arrow moves through a fictional airspace."
This intuitive knowledge on handling emotional beats, narrative, and characters of course stems from years of experience Brennan has as a writer, actor, improv teacher, comedian, camp counsellor, and professional TTRPG GM and player.
Using Ron Edwards design language (s. his 1999 essay "System Does Matter"), Brennan wants to run primarily narrativist games, while 5e would fit Edwards' idea of a Gamist system, i.e. one which involves the pursuit of "winning" against NPCs.
Now let's look at 5e: it's generally agreed upon that 5e is opinionated on combat, while also being vocal that exploration and social encounters, while less fleshed-out, are still part of its pillars alongside combat, meaning the game is still encouraging you to pursue these types of play.
Combat is a very fleshed-out series of systems. The action system is centered on combat, both in terms of time and types. Spellcasting is very distinct and allows for casting mostly offensive or defensive spells. Class progression usually focuses on improving one's combat capabilities.
Exploration and social interactions are much more bare-bones.
On the social side, a few more recent supplements have reintroduced the classic Attitude table present in earlier editions and which are a mainstay of the OSR community. Additionally the DMG spends merely three pages on how to run NPCs, mostly using fairly general advice instead of concrete game mechanics. Interaction between player characters is also barely discussed in 5e rules.
Exploration is similarly simple, mostly related to the omnipresent but simple skill system, as well as some relatively simple rules on weather, hazards, overland travel speed, and tracking rations.
5e's shift towards simplified rules for these two pillars, including simplifying the skill system into a mostly binary failure-success affair is a shift away from earlier D&D editions and some of its direct competitors, e.g. Pathfinder, Rolemaster, GURPS, and The Dark Eye, which often would involve subsystems for various aspects of social or exploratory encounters, s. Edwards' "System does Matter" essay and his point on simulationist games.
So if Brennan wants to run a narrative game where we can realiably use his knowledge of narratives and character writing to create a compelling story while having a set system as his backup to run situations where violence becomes a factor... Using a game like 5e is a decent choice.
Of course other systems might be even better for that. Shadowdark for example may just be the perfect fit for someone wanting to run a narrative game with occasional combat. The combat rules are thorough enough to cover the fundamentals. Sure, you may just need to get rid of real-time torches, the key mechanic which sets Shadowdark apart from other OSR games, but subtracting a mechanic, instead of modifying it, is a relatively uninvasive procedure.
Personally I too like it when my TTRPG, especially stuff intended for medium- or long-term play, doesn't touch social and narrative elements much mechanically.
Meanwhile games like Ironsworn and Heart - The City Below, which are much more narrative-focused, do have issues where their resolution mechanics clash with the fiction in ways that would pull be out of the story we're trying to tell. Heart has the issue with the Supplies resistance not being shared within the group, and Ironsworn's fulfillment of vows can be glacially slow (s. A. A. Voigt's "Ironsworn: A Narrative Dilemma" video essay).
Ultimately, it all comes down to preference. Personally, if I wanted to run a fantasy game with magic and a strong narrative (like Worlds Beyond Number), with the clear goal of not getting bogged down in combat or minis, I'd legit use Shadowdark as described above. If I knew I wanted to tell a specific type of story and knew of a game that was designed for these types of stories, I'd definitely give it a read and talk about it with my players before we adopt it.
However, I do implore folks to not Ship of Theseus a game with tons of homebrew and houserules so that it's no longer recognizable as its original game. If you ever feel compelled to do that, ask other players what systems might be a better fit for your needs.

When i was younger and my brother still lived with us i would sometimes go to him asking for piano improvisations based on different themes i would give him. Often times this would be based on my OCs or scenes from my "story i will someday totally write but for now daydream about and monologue to my siblings". It was nice to sit back, eyes closed, imagining the action with my own background original soundtrack. He was pretty good at it too.
He was the first one to leave home as he went to uni, and he was the only one to never really come back to live with my parents at any point. He was never really the easiest to communicate with and being away didn't make things much smoother.
However, every year, on our birthdays, we will compose songs for us. He knows what we like, so he always crafts them based on our preferences. He knows I'm a sucker for a repeating melody, for violin and piano sounding sounds, he knows I dream of vocals and man he's come close. My sister is all about rhythm and a bit more electronic. One year we collaborated and I made a moving backdrop to his song for her (which also included audio from Kermit the frog in the background... it kinda worked ngl).
He's been working on a game for some time (you know, if being a talented mathemagician and musician wasn't enough) and even though we are definitely not the target audience (it's a rythm game and man i suck at anything that requires reflexes) he kept asking us for feedback every step of the way. He made it very clear that even though the game has a very high skill ceiling he wants to make sure "even mum can play it".
For context, my mum is first adorable and also she's an og gamer. As in, she got carpal tunnel from playing too much tetris when she was younger. Now she loves playing overcooked and animal crossing with us but she get a bit overwhelmed with more complex games (she's just like me frfr).
It came out today! I bought it (he did offer me a key but I kinda couldn't be bothered and also he was one of the first people to but from my Redbubble so i gotta do what i gotta do). I started playing it. Immediately changed my settings to four keys maximum because i was honest with myself. Actually, that's a lie, the first thing i did was change the colours because that's the kind of person i am. Started playing, really loved the first song, quickly realised another one was waaaay out my league, liked another one. Tell my bro, he says "oh you should also check out Bi Katuak, I think it's your birthday song" I check it out, love it but doesn't ring that much of a bell but now that I am on the second page i see it
La Danza del Fenix
Immediately i am transported back, i imagine Amanda, the character, riddled by anxiety and regret, that i then thought i related to the least but have since then came to realise portrayed very accurate parts of me, dancing surrounded by fire in a joyous way for the first time, the freedom, how her daughter will dance at a ball carefree and excited on what will be the real proof that war and tragedy is over
My brother only gives side hugs and half smiles
It's an easy song. With a lovely repeating melody that makes me want to dance around as I play it even if that makes me make mistakes. You're not penalised for mistakes, you can only see your records get higher. The songs never end unless you want them to, and yet they don't loop in any obvious way (something to do with the algorhythm he kept trying to explain but I kind of gave up understanding at some point.
This game may be for you if you like music, rhythm games, or just videogames in general. Though in a way I am sure it will never be for you in the way it was made for me.
It's called EnternAlgoRythm Give it a shot! There is pretty much nothing you can't customise in terms of gameplay and cosmetics and if there's anything you notice you can tell him and he'll do his very best to fix it or improve it. There are plenty of songs for any skill level (some i dare not even touch) and the songs are named in different languages based on the countries we have lived in/had influence from. My favourites are the aforementioned Danza del Fenix, Bi Katuak (defs also made for me, it's an easy cat themed song), Violet Voyage, and Ingranaggi Striscianti.
TLDR: im very emotional pls go play my brother's game
#i love this game#video games#rhythm game#gamer#touhou#touhou project#idk what else to tag#just give it a shot if you're at all interested#video game recommendations#video game review#eternalgorythm#agecaf#indie games#indie video games#music#music stuff#piano improvisation#oc#my ocs

Music is one of the oldest forms of human expression, and it has a unique ability to transcend age, culture, and time. Whether you’re a young child picking up your first instrument, a teenager exploring your creative side, or an adult rediscovering a long-lost passion, music offers something special for everyone. At Vaishali Made Music Academy, we firmly believe that learning music is a lifelong journey that brings numerous benefits, no matter when you start.
In this blog, we’ll dive deep into how learning music can enrich your life at any age, improving not only your cognitive abilities but also your emotional well-being and overall quality of life. Whether you’re looking to improve your focus, boost creativity, reduce stress, or simply experience the joy of learning something new, the transformative power of music is waiting for you.
1. Enhancing Cognitive Skills at Any Age
One of the most remarkable benefits of learning music is its ability to stimulate cognitive development. It’s well-established that playing an instrument, singing, or even just listening to music actively engages different parts of the brain. These activities encourage neuroplasticity, which is the brain's ability to reorganize itself and form new neural connections.
Memory Boost: Music is a powerful tool for enhancing memory. For children, learning to read music and memorize songs can help with language skills and academic performance. But it’s not just for kids! Adults who start learning music also experience improved memory retention, whether they’re memorizing musical pieces or recalling life experiences.
Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving: Music requires deep thinking and problem-solving skills. Musicians must learn how to interpret sheet music, understand complex rhythms, and master coordination. This analytical thinking helps develop critical thinking skills that are transferable to other areas of life.
At Vaishali Made Music Academy, we understand that every student learns differently, which is why we offer a variety of personalized courses to meet the needs of learners of all ages. Explore our Courses to see which one is the perfect fit for your learning journey.
2. Stimulating Creativity and Innovation
Music is inherently creative. From improvising a melody to composing a new piece, music offers an exciting outlet for creative expression. It allows individuals to explore their inner worlds and communicate emotions that may be difficult to express through words alone.
Creating Music: For those who are interested in composing, learning music opens doors to an entire world of creative possibilities. Whether you're a young child playing simple tunes on a keyboard or an adult composing complex symphonies, music provides endless opportunities for innovation.
Improvisation: One of the most thrilling aspects of music is improvisation. Musicians often need to think on their feet, adapting to changing circumstances and playing by ear. This encourages creative problem-solving and can be immensely fulfilling, regardless of your age.
Whether you're interested in learning the piano, guitar, vocals, or any other instrument, Vaishali Made Music Academy offers a creative learning environment where students of all ages can discover and hone their creative abilities. Don’t forget to check out our Courses to start your creative journey today.
3. Improving Emotional Well-being
Music’s influence on emotional health is profound. It has the ability to uplift, soothe, and heal, making it an invaluable tool for emotional well-being. Whether you're dealing with stress, anxiety, or just need an outlet for your emotions, music can provide comfort and release.
Stress Relief: Playing an instrument or singing is an excellent way to unwind after a long day. Studies show that engaging with music helps lower cortisol levels, the hormone associated with stress. For both children and adults, incorporating music into daily life can promote relaxation and provide a sense of calm.
Emotional Expression: For many individuals, music serves as a form of emotional expression. The melodies, rhythms, and harmonies evoke emotions that words often fail to capture. This emotional connection to music provides a healthy outlet for those who may otherwise struggle to express themselves.
At Vaishali Made Music Academy, we recognize the power of music to enhance emotional health. Our courses are designed not only to teach technical skills but also to encourage emotional growth and expression through music. Explore our Courses to find the perfect course that aligns with your emotional needs and personal goals.
4. Building Confidence and Self-Esteem
Music provides a unique way to boost confidence and self-esteem. As you progress in your musical journey, you experience a sense of achievement that reinforces your belief in your abilities.
Performing in Front of Others: One of the most effective ways music builds confidence is through performance. Whether you're participating in a recital, an ensemble, or simply sharing your music with friends and family, performance helps you conquer fears of public speaking and stage fright. The sense of accomplishment after a successful performance is immensely rewarding.
Mastering New Skills: Every new song or piece of music you learn represents a personal victory. Overcoming challenges and learning new musical techniques naturally boosts self-esteem and fosters a “can-do” attitude. This sense of accomplishment is a universal experience for musicians of all ages.
At Vaishali Made Music Academy, we provide ample opportunities for our students to showcase their talents. We believe in building a supportive environment that nurtures confidence and self-expression. Check out our Courses to start building your musical confidence.
5. Fostering Social Connections
Music isn’t just an individual experience; it’s also a social one. It brings people together, helping forge connections and friendships that might not have otherwise happened. Whether in a group class, ensemble, or community performance, music fosters collaboration and teamwork.
Collaboration in Group Settings: Learning music in a group setting promotes teamwork, listening skills, and a sense of camaraderie. Students learn to respect each other’s contributions and work toward a common goal—be it a choir performance or an orchestra recital.
Building Lifelong Friendships: Music classes often bring together like-minded individuals who share a passion for learning and playing. These connections can lead to meaningful friendships that last a lifetime.
At Vaishali Made Music Academy, we encourage group lessons and ensemble performances to help our students connect with others. Our Courses provide an opportunity to engage in social and musical interactions that enhance your overall experience.
6. Health Benefits Beyond the Mind
The physical benefits of learning music are sometimes overlooked but are just as significant. Playing an instrument involves fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and posture, all of which contribute to better physical health.
Motor Skills and Coordination: Playing an instrument, especially one that requires the use of both hands (like the piano or guitar), improves motor coordination and dexterity. It’s an excellent way for both children and adults to sharpen their physical abilities.
Breathing and Posture: Singing and playing wind instruments require controlled breathing and good posture, both of which can positively affect overall health. These skills improve lung capacity and encourage better physical alignment.
At Vaishali Made Music Academy, we place an emphasis on proper technique to ensure that our students not only learn to play but also learn to play well in a way that benefits their overall health.
7. The Joy of Lifelong Learning
The beauty of learning music is that it’s a lifelong journey. Whether you're learning for the first time or continuing your musical education, there's always room to grow. The sense of fulfillment that comes with mastering new skills, learning new pieces, or trying new instruments is incomparable.
It’s Never Too Late: Age is no barrier when it comes to learning music. Many adults start learning music later in life and experience significant cognitive and emotional benefits. Whether you’re 5 or 75, the joy of music remains constant.
Endless Opportunities: The world of music is vast and varied, and there’s always something new to explore. Whether you’re interested in learning new genres, playing different instruments, or composing original music, the possibilities are endless.
At Vaishali Made Music Academy, we’re here to help you discover the endless opportunities that music has to offer. Our personalized approach ensures that every student, regardless of age, continues to grow and develop their musical talents.

Joby Harte shares 5 Tips for Transitioning from Radio to Television Broadcasting

Transitioning from radio to television broadcasting can be an exciting yet challenging shift for media professionals.
Esteemed figures like Joby Harte exemplify how adaptability and a commitment to growth can lead to success in both mediums.
While both involve communication, television requires adapting to visual storytelling, body language, and on-screen presence.
With the right approach, radio professionals can smoothly transition to television while leveraging their existing skills.
Here are five essential tips to navigate this transition effectively.
1. Master On-Camera Presence
Unlike radio, television requires you to be physically present and visually engaging.
Viewers not only listen to your voice but also observe your facial expressions, gestures, and overall demeanor.
Building confidence in front of the camera is crucial for connecting with your audience.
Tip: Practice maintaining eye contact with the camera, use natural gestures, and work on a warm, approachable expression. Recording yourself and reviewing the footage can help identify areas for improvement.
2. Adapt to Visual Storytelling
Radio relies solely on audio to convey stories, while television incorporates visuals to enhance the narrative.
This means learning to coordinate your words with images, graphics, and live footage to tell a cohesive story.
Example: Instead of describing a scene in detail as you would on the radio, let visuals do part of the storytelling. Use concise, impactful commentary to complement what’s shown on screen.
Exercise: Watch television broadcasts and analyze how anchors or presenters use visuals effectively to complement their narration.
3. Refine Your Voice for TV
While radio broadcasters are already skilled in vocal delivery, television demands a slightly different tone and style.
The goal is to sound natural and conversational while maintaining clarity and authority.
Tip: Focus on syncing your tone with the mood of the visuals. For instance, a breaking news segment might require a serious tone, while a lifestyle segment can be more relaxed and upbeat. Avoid overly dramatic intonation, as it may not translate well to television audiences.
4. Embrace Team Collaboration
In radio, broadcasters often work solo or in small teams.
Television, however, involves collaboration with a larger crew, including camera operators, producers, makeup artists, and editors.
Building strong relationships with your team is essential for seamless production.
Advice:
Be open to feedback from directors and producers.
Communicate clearly with technical staff to ensure smooth on-air execution.
Appreciate the behind-the-scenes work that contributes to a successful broadcast.
5. Stay Camera-Ready
Appearance plays a significant role in television broadcasting.
Unlike radio, where the focus is solely on voice and content, television requires attention to wardrobe, grooming, and posture.
A polished, professional appearance enhances credibility and viewer engagement.
Tip: Invest time in understanding how lighting and camera angles affect your look. Work with wardrobe and makeup teams to develop a consistent on-screen style that aligns with the brand or show you’re representing.
Leveraging Radio Skills in Television
While transitioning to television broadcasting involves adapting to new skills, your experience in radio is a valuable asset.
Your ability to articulate clearly, improvise effectively, and engage audiences will serve you well in television.
By mastering on-camera presence, refining your voice, and embracing the visual aspects of storytelling, you can successfully navigate this transition and thrive in the world of television broadcasting.
With dedication and practice, the shift from radio to television can be a rewarding expansion of your broadcasting career.

Discovering the World of Acting Courses: A Path to Professionalism
Acting is more than just a talent or a passion; it’s a craft that can be honed and perfected through training. For those with aspirations of becoming professional actors or improving their skills, enrolling in acting courses is a fantastic way to develop the necessary techniques, discipline, and understanding required to excel in the world of performance.
Whether you're a beginner or an experienced performer looking to refine your abilities, acting courses offer structured learning that can enhance your range, confidence, and versatility.
Why Take Acting Courses?
Many aspiring actors often wonder if formal training is necessary for a successful career in acting. The truth is that acting courses offer significant benefits, making them invaluable to both budding and seasoned performers.
Skill Development: Acting courses teach fundamental techniques that help participants understand different styles of acting, body movement, voice projection, and emotional expression. These courses also cover how to engage with a script, interpret characters, and bring authenticity to performances.
Confidence Building: Acting is all about being vulnerable and authentic in front of an audience. For many, overcoming stage fright or on-camera nerves can be a major challenge. Acting courses offer a safe, supportive environment where students can build self-assurance, work on public speaking, and practice presenting themselves convincingly in various roles.
Networking Opportunities: Acting courses bring together individuals from diverse backgrounds, all with a shared passion for performance. This environment fosters collaboration and creativity, allowing students to learn from one another, make industry connections, and even discover opportunities for future collaborations.
Professional Insight: Acting courses are often taught by industry professionals with real-world experience. These instructors provide invaluable insights into the entertainment industry, helping students understand audition techniques, casting processes, and professional etiquette.
Versatility and Range: One of the hallmarks of a great actor is their ability to portray a wide range of characters. Acting courses help students explore various genres and styles of performance, such as drama, comedy, improvisation, and classical theater, enhancing their adaptability in different roles.
Types of Acting Courses
Acting courses come in various forms, each designed to cater to specific needs and experience levels. Some of the most common types include:
Beginner Acting Courses: These are perfect for individuals who are new to acting and looking to build a foundation. Beginner courses often focus on essential skills such as voice modulation, physicality, and basic acting techniques.
Improvisation Classes: Improvisation courses teach actors how to think on their feet, create spontaneous scenes, and react naturally to unscripted situations. Improv skills are crucial in both live performances and auditions.
On-Camera Acting Courses: This type of course teaches actors how to perform in front of a camera, a skill set that differs from stage acting. It covers camera angles, technical requirements, and maintaining authenticity in close-ups.
Method Acting Courses: For those interested in diving deeper into character work, method acting courses in mumbai focus on embodying a character’s emotions and experiences. This type of training requires emotional depth and commitment, pushing actors to immerse themselves fully in their roles.
Voice and Diction Classes: These courses concentrate on voice control, articulation, and accent work, helping actors develop clear and powerful vocal techniques for both stage and screen performances.
Advanced Acting Courses: Designed for actors with prior experience, advanced courses focus on refining skills, exploring complex characters, and mastering challenging scenes. These courses also often involve critiques from peers and instructors to aid in the actor’s development.
How to Choose the Right Acting Course
Choosing the right acting course depends on your goals, experience level, and personal preferences. Here are some tips to help guide your decision:
Assess Your Experience: If you're a beginner, look for introductory courses that provide a solid foundation. More experienced actors may benefit from specialized classes, such as method acting or advanced scene study.
Research the Instructors: Investigate the instructors’ backgrounds, looking for professionals with real-world experience who can offer practical insights and mentorship.
Class Size: Smaller classes allow for more individual attention and constructive feedback, which can be especially helpful when learning nuanced acting techniques.
Course Format: Consider whether you prefer in-person training or online courses, as both formats offer unique benefits. In-person courses offer hands-on experience, while online options may provide flexibility in scheduling.

How to Become a Successful Musician in 2024: What You Need to Know
Becoming a musician is an exciting journey filled with creativity, expression, and personal growth. However, many aspiring musicians find it challenging to navigate the path toward achieving their musical goals. Whether you’re just starting out or you’ve been playing for years and want to take your skills to the next level, knowing the step-by-step process is crucial. In this guide, we will break down the key stages of becoming a musician, from identifying your passion to building a career in music. With dedication and hard work, anyone can follow this path to turn their musical dreams into reality.
Step 1: Identifying Your Passion and Musical Talent
The first and most essential step in becoming a musician is identifying your passion for music. Music, like any art form, is driven by deep emotion and personal connection. Ask yourself: What genres of music do you enjoy? Do you love singing, playing an instrument, or composing songs? Figuring out what excites you about music is important because your passion will fuel your journey, helping you overcome challenges and obstacles.
If you’re not yet sure of your musical preferences, spend time listening to various styles of music — from classical and jazz to pop, rock, or electronic. Your choice may evolve over time, but finding something you connect with will help you focus your efforts. Remember, music is an emotional language, and tapping into that passion is key to your success.
Step 2: Picking an Instrument or Focusing on Vocal Training
Once you have identified your passion, the next step is to choose an instrument or focus on vocal training. If you are inclined to sing, consider taking formal vocal lessons to improve your range, pitch control, and vocal health. Professional guidance can help you avoid strain and develop a signature style.
For those drawn to instruments, you have a wide array of options — guitar, piano, violin, drums, or even digital production. If you’re undecided, it can be beneficial to try different instruments until you find the one that feels natural. It’s important to remember that every instrument requires commitment, so take your time in choosing something you truly enjoy. Early frustration is common, but with consistent practice, progress will follow.
Step 3: Practicing and Improving Your Skills
Once you’ve chosen your path, practice is the foundation of your development. Becoming a musician requires consistent and focused practice. Set aside daily practice time, even if it’s just 30 minutes. Quality is more important than quantity — practicing with intent and clear goals will help you improve faster than aimless repetition.
One effective method is to break down your practice sessions into sections. For example, you might spend 15 minutes on technique, such as scales or finger exercises, and another 15 minutes on learning new songs or refining your performance. For vocalists, this might include breathing exercises, vocal warm-ups, and working on different vocal styles.
Also, remember that practice isn’t just about perfecting what you already know. Challenging yourself by learning new techniques, experimenting with new genres, and even making mistakes is part of growing as a musician. Consistent practice will gradually improve your skills and help you achieve mastery.
Step 4: Understanding Music Theory and Different Styles
Many musicians shy away from music theory, but understanding it is crucial for long-term success. Music theory helps you understand how music works — the relationship between notes, scales, chords, and how they come together to create songs. It doesn’t mean you need to dive deep into complex theory right away, but learning the basics will make you a more versatile and creative musician.
For example, understanding scales and chords will allow you to improvise, compose your own music, and collaborate effectively with other musicians. You’ll be able to break down songs you enjoy and figure out why they sound the way they do. This knowledge can also help you transition between different styles of music, broadening your abilities and potential.
Step 5: Building a Network and Creating Music
Music isn’t just a solitary pursuit; it’s a collaborative art form. As you develop your skills, start networking with other musicians, producers, and industry professionals. Building a supportive network is essential for growing as a musician and finding opportunities to perform, record, and collaborate.
Attending open mic nights, joining local bands, or enrolling in music schools or workshops are great ways to meet other musicians. Collaboration can inspire you to explore new ideas, gain feedback, and improve your craft. Additionally, recording and sharing your music, whether it’s on social media or music platforms like SoundCloud, Bandcamp, or YouTube, helps establish your presence.
While building a network, be open to different experiences. Perform at local venues, participate in online music communities, or submit your music to small record labels. Opportunities often come from the connections you make, so focus on building relationships with people who share your passion for music.
Step 6: Recording and Sharing Your Music
Recording your music is a significant milestone on your journey. Today, you don’t need a professional studio to create high-quality recordings. With affordable audio interfaces, microphones, and digital audio workstations (DAWs) like Ableton, Logic, or FL Studio, you can produce professional-sounding tracks from home.
Start by creating demos of your songs, and gradually improve the quality as you learn more about production and mixing. Don’t be afraid to share your early work, even if it’s not perfect — feedback is an invaluable tool for growth. You can share your music on streaming platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, or YouTube, giving you exposure to a global audience.
Conclusion:
The journey to becoming a musician is a rewarding yet challenging one. From discovering your passion and selecting your instrument or voice training to practicing diligently and networking with others, each step plays a crucial role in your growth. Remember that persistence, patience, and dedication are key to mastering your craft and succeeding in the music industry. Every great musician started where you are now, and by following this step-by-step guide, you too can achieve your musical dreams.

More non-oboe stuff after the jump...
youtube
This guy starts this video of going "if you put 10 musicians in a room, and asked them who the greatest living musician, more than one would say Keith Jarrett."
And if you're an occasional peruser of this noble blog, you'll know that I am one of those. I've said it many times over, to the point where I've had numerous "Keith Jarrett spells" over the lifetime of this place.
This is another great example of just how brilliant of a musician Jarrett was in a prime that lasted about five decades. The clip he's alluding to is below, and while it might not seem incredible on the surface, let me tell you...as a musician?...it reveals a depth of knowledge and skill that has few peers.
youtube
What we have here is another of Jarrett's many improvised performances. Completely off the cuff, no preparation.
But what's special about this one is his left hand. The technical term is "ostinato," but most musicians call them "vamps." He's changing the dynamics in his left hand, but aside from that, he's using the same repeating riff the entire time to improvize off of. Without ever dropping it, missing a note, missing a beat, lagging, pushing...
Half of his brain is as perfect as any machine. The other half is improvising. Do you have any fucking idea how hard it is to control two parts of your brain distinctly, yet harmoniously, like this?
Then there's the speed at which he's playing all this. If you watch the first vid, you'll notice the host saying he's going to TRY to play a simplified style of his...and does successfully...at about half speed.
This technicaly brilliance never once overshadows the beauty of the piece or obscure any melodies the audience can latch onto. Which is the point of all technique...to make the music better, not the process.
I didn't even intend to write about this either...I got diverted when looking for the other Keith Jarrett brilliant clips I wanted initially. But it was a good diversion...
And since I've got two videos left in my limit, so lets to a quick breakdown of a couple licks of his that are just jawdropping...
***
youtube
1:19-3:20 or so
The incredible lick I want to focus on occurs at 1:48...but you gotta hear how he gets there, and then where he goes from that. The melody comes in at 2:16, sneaking its way into the overall piece...almost an afterthought after what Jarrett did as an intro here. Just insanity.
But listen to that incredible lick at 1:48 again a few times. Listen to it as a whole, then try to focus on each hand individually and try to pick up the different patterns each one is executing. Combined, it's a cascading staircase of beauty...but when you look in more detail, you see that each hand is working independently, and the whole becomes greater than the sum of its parts.
***
youtube
2:19-2:40
First off, this clip gives you a great example of "Keith Jarrett, vocals." Yes, he moans and screeches and grunts really loudly while playing...after awhile, you tune it out because the piano is so brilliant. It's just...one of those...things. Listen, I don't like it any more than you do, ok?
But that lick at 2:30...whoooboy...that's why you're tuning in. Well, I should say, that's why you stick around.
When Jarrett does his funky grunting, it's really a sign of him desparately trying to find something in the music. He's searching, probing, trying to find that spark...
And then you hear him find it at about 2:27. The rest of the band is following his lead, plodding along with him...you can literally feel this shit change at 2:27. That one little grasp of something undefineable...and when he kicks into full gear, the band follows suit immediately.
Listen to how this little "footing finding" at 2:27 springboards into that absolute buttfucking monster of a lick at 2:30...these things don't happen in a vacuum, improvisation has context. After this? The rest of the song is absolutely cooking...but they had to find their way through a little darkness first.
Here's a good link breaking this lick down. It's a real mindfuck of a lick, man. Like, I've learned it on guitar, and my brain is telling me there's a distinct pattern here...but I can't find it when I break it down. I have no idea where he pulled this from, no idea how he logically came to put it together...and that right there is a sign of a great lick.
***
That's it for today.

I have been stewing on it, and with some revelations from last night, I have finally realized why I don't write songs anymore.
It's the pressure to have the process of making art be a performance in itself. Don't get me wrong, I love to perform, and I love it when people hear the finished product of my effort, but like, imagine if you could only paint in such a way that every brushstroke was perfect to begin with and contributed perfectly to a completed work, like a speedpaint video or something. No sketches, no doodles, no experiments, no out-takes. Every curve and edge and light and shade up for the public appraisal at all times. That's what it's like living with someone as a musician. If you sing or play an instrument, there's no escaping the fact that other people hear you, all the time, no matter what. I got used to there being an audience, whether I wanted one or not.
I've gotten incredibly good at improvisation, but all my sketches I post to my soundcloud are generally only covers (where I already know the music in advance) or purely electronic affairs. I don't actually work on things, come back to them, polish them, rework them, no I don't do any of those things because I've turned the process of making art into a performance in itself. And once a performance is over, it's over! The curtains close and everyone claps and then you go home.
People close to me always say "I love hearing your music!" and it's true, I believe them, and I'm confident that I make great music. But you want to hear the music, not me working on the music. You don't want to hear me tuning my guitar, you don't want to hear me listening to the same 4-bar loop over and over while I adjust the compressor on a snare or the filter on a synth, and you definitely don't want to hear my vocal overdubs or re-takes or edits.
Improv is a completely different skillset than composing, and I want to compose again, dammit. I need to unlock the art, the skill, the practice, of making music because it's something I like doing. I play my guitar all the time because I like how it sounds and I like what I can do with it. I don't really care who listens. I want to get that way with songwriting again, doing it for the enjoyment of the craft itself.
