I was looking at a few posts about autism (as one does) and it just suddenly clicked into place a fundamental thing about Yuri's character that I'd been grasping at, but hadn't really been able to adequately identify. I still have a much longer and more thorough analysis going through a whole lot of my thoughts on Yuri's character and her experience of autism that i'm working on (of which this will likely be a component), but I thought I'd share this separately just to emphasize.

Post I saw which made this click for me was making fun of the fact that most media depicting impaired empathy in autistic characters explicitly depicts them with this unflappable confidence of never having been rejected by people they love. The crux of this is that in actual reality, autistic people almost always have that experience at some point, for some behavior, for reasons they don't really understand. "There is an invisible line where people will get sick of you, and you have no warning of when you're about to cross it." So frequently, autistic people attempt to ride a razor thin edge, walking on constant eggshells to desperately attempt to avoid crossing that line.

Very often autistic people will attempt to avoid doing anything at all which could be considered weird, or off-putting, and will try their absolute hardest to do things in a way that is acceptable to other people, sometimes to the point of outright suppressing their emotions, because they are afraid that they'll say something just wrong enough that the people they care about will push them away, and they don't understand WHY it happened, but they know it's THEIR fault. Sometimes masking is fighting to appear aloof all the time because you can't regulate your emotions in a way that is acceptable to other people.

And holy fucking Jesus, that fits the exact mold of what I've been trying to talk about with the particular way Yuri's anxieties manifest.

It really feels to me like Yuri has this constant fear of breaking the "rules" of socializing, despite not really understanding what those rules even are. She's constantly afraid of saying something wrong, when she doesn't even know what wrong would be, she's just sure everyone ELSE will know it when they hear it. I think a huge part of her social anxiety comes from her own understanding of herself as a very weird person who doesn't really get a lot of how to socialize, and it seems to me like she's probably dealt with her fair share of social rejection and isolation based on those traits. She then felt she had to take responsibility for those traits, probably because it's the one thing she can change, and she is the one common denominator in all of these bad situations (This is something which is pretty common, actually! "Everyone else can socialize just fine, and I have so much difficulty with it! I must just be broken in some way. I have to try super hard to be normal to make friends!")

I think a big part of why it's so apparent in the Literature Club is because she really thinks she's found a place where she can make friends in spite of all of her issues, so when she starts...being herself, and receives even the smallest HINT of pushback, she overcorrects and tries to rein all of herself in to fix her "mistake", because she really wants to make friends here, and doesn't want them to reject her as well.

She's had this experience of others pushing her away for being weird so often that, coupled with her acknowledged trouble for reading situations, when anybody responds poorly to something and she recognizes it, she immediately overcorrects out of fear of being an annoying burden to everyone around her, and that "correction" consists of suppressing herself into being "normal" (or at least "less weird"), because she believes nobody could actually like her just for being who she is. There's something wrong with her fundamentally, and to make friends, for people to like her and want to be around her, she has to "fix" herself.

it's just, like...

it's really hard for me to interpret Yuri's character that doesn't involve her being somewhere on the spectrum, bros. she's written with such delicately constructed autistic coding, despite the appearance of just being a hackneyed weird girl visual novel trope. she deserves the world.......

I've actually been on hiatus for... quite a few years 🙈 but I've lately gotten passionately interested in the "indie web" and the idea of making a website to 100% express yourself outside of streamlined social media. And since tumblr has been getting waves of new users over the last few years, I'd like to make stuff for them! ESPECIALLY with the new features of CSS that didn't exist when I was active!

There are definitely theme makers I don't recognize (whether they're new creators or old creators who rebranded), so I'm excited to re-immerse myself in this community!!

In-character Bean knows, but as the artist/writer, I haven't decided how that happens

I do imagine that it is a somewhat gradual thing, but there is some main turning point for them that really changes the dynamic from 'Bean is being hunted by a fucked-up version of themselves' to 'Bean has a wacky roommate, and they get up to hijinx together'

I will figure it out at some point, and when I do, it'll probably be revealed in-story - But for now, it is a mystery~

I be semi back into mega man and I’ve been thinking about why-despite it objectively being more known-it was harder to get people into compared to getter and I think it’s chalked up to the gameplay comes first over any story stuff. MM lore is still insane and a funny rabbit hole to fall into but its not what people think about when they think about this franchise past a basic plot summary, they think about a grueling platformer with freedom to do the stages in any order. But playing all these games, especially if platformers aren’t you thing, doesn’t give you all the lore context given this was a series made in the late 80s and continued up to the 2010s, so pieces of lore were kept to manuals or sometimes even interviews. Sure, a lot of people are use to outside sources for lore, but given how many games there are even if you could pretty much take away the first series out of it to make it seem clearer, you still have to deal with the fact the lord didn’t really pick up until the third platformer because X didn’t know if it wanted to be episodic like classic or actually be more serious- which among other reasons lead it to probably be the messiest series in terms of lore. And then there’s the fact you can’t even recommend someone to read a manga or watch a anime for lore retellings because all of the mangas basically are their own takes of games and anime? Lol despite some games having animated cutscenes the ones who got the anime privilege was the RPG games which everyone in the lore circles always ignore because it’s a separate timeline.

Basically: Mega Man really be “gameplay first, lore bits second” and given I meet a lot of people who don’t play many platformers/are good at them, + the factor there's multiple fucking series which makes it slightly confusing or overwhelming to a outsider, yeah me recommending niche mecha show that’s somewhat convoluted tends to be the better option.

Once again, I'm reminded of how annoying it was that Gojo took the high road with the higher ups. Those wrinkly old good for nothing assholes should have been massacred a long long time ago. They do not actually give fucking damn about peace and order. They all just want power and with Gojo gone they were drunk with it. Idiotic selfish self-centered bastards.

I swear Geto should not have helped Gojo grow a moral principle of killing only when there is meaning to it. It made him less inclined to commit homicide no matter how justifiable it already is. Because while I do see his perspective - *that it is meaningless to kill the higher-ups if his goal was to ensure that the youth would have a better life, it would have been so fucking cathartic if Gojo just Hollow Purple'd them all way back when they set up Yuji to die in the Juvenile Detention Center.

*Gojo is right (as much as it pains me to say it). He cannot kill the higher-ups because he would create a vacuum of power that would have resulted to any of the following: REPERCUSSION 1: Other seniors from the powerful clans would power grab leading to a civil war among sorcerers which can lead to many meaningless deaths. Lots of dead sorcerers = Less sorcerers to fight the ever growing number of curses = Gojo fails to ensure that young people enjoy their youth and have allies. ---> Less Sorcerers VS Lots of Curses = More Solo Missions. With the unpredictability of Curses, the new gen may even be forced to fight those above their Grade like Haibara. And, as proven in Hidden Inventory, Gojo maybe The Strongest but he cannot be everywhere and save/protect people all the time. The mortality rate of young sorcerers may raise even further no matter how much Gojo, Nanami, Shoko, Utahime, and Yaga overwork themselves to death to mitigate it. REPERCUSSION 2: Other seniors from powerful clans would fill the vacuum of power and unite to expel Gojo from jujutsu society and label him as a mass killer. Again, this can lead to a civil war among sorcerers: those who side with Gojo and those who do not which can lead to many meaningless deaths.

Lots of dead sorcerers = Less sorcerers to fight the ever growing number of curses = Gojo fails to ensure that young people enjoy their youth and have allies. -> Yeah. Yeah. Gojo is The Strongest. However, people that desire power are not very smart and can do a lot of stupid things (like what the higher-ups did after the Shibuya Incident). They can easily use the mass killing as an excuse to paint Gojo as the new "King of Curses" or something.

It is also highly possible for these power-hungry people to put an exorbitant bounty on Gojo's head that maybe even Mei Mei would be tempted to kill him.

Another likely result is for them to ally with Kenjaku. The Kamo clan did it so easily (if I remember it right). The Zenin clan may even use this as an excuse to also take away Megumi since they can claim that Gojo has gone crazy.

REPERCUSSION 3: Gojo takes all the power for himself and, as I have elaborated from REPERCUSSION 2, he could just be branded as the new "King of Curses" by the others and end up in an unwanted civil war with lots of unnecessary deaths. While he is powerful enough to be feared, envious assholes full of stupidity and hatred towards him can easily override common sense and still pick a bloody fight. Not to mention the ignorant "Yes Men" of the clan heads. So...

So... as cathartic as it would have been (like Maki's revenge on the Zenin clan), Gojo cannot exactly kill the higher-ups easily - not for the goal that he had in mind. He has to take the high road and play nice with them so he can focus more on helping nurture the next generation of sorcerers towards a better future.

It's sad tho. Regardless of his efforts to avoid bloodshed among sorcerers and protect the youth, Gojo failed anyway. He even blames himself for the entire fiasco after he got out of the Prison Realm. He doesn't fault anyone except himself (just like when Riko died). Gojo's choice to care doomed a lot of people.

Maybe if Kenjaku hadn't meddled through the Shibuya Incident, Gojo would have succeeded with his plan. He'd continue dancing through the finicky political games of the dying elderly jujutsu higher-ups while acting as a buffer for the new gen sorcerers. Eventually, the old clans would lose their influence as the youth grew strong together enough to change their society and render traditions as obsolete.

Sadly, it was not meant to be.

"Claire Cao was only a senior in high school when she saw a vital need in her community — and filled it. 

In 2024, the teenager spent her time outside of school volunteering at Blanchet House, a Portland-based nonprofit that serves people experiencing homelessness through food donations, clothing drives, and mental health assistance programs. 

As she logged hours as a Blanchet House student ambassador, Cao soon realized how difficult it was for community members to keep track of shelter openings, rotating food service programs, and available mental health resources. 

“During one afternoon meal service, I met Dano, an unhoused man who shared his struggles with accessing basic services like food and shelter,” Cao said in a recent press release. 

“Left disconnected from essential services, Dano described his struggles of not knowing where to go or which shelters had available beds.”

Combining her love for technology, law, and public policy, Cao pulled available resources into a database and created the ShelterBridge app, which connects users to shelters and services in their area. 

“ShelterBridge wasn’t simply inspired by Dano — it was inspired by the realization that access to resources is a fundamental need that we, as a community, can do a better job of providing,” Cao emphasized. 

“I wanted to use my skills to build something that could bridge that gap, ensuring that no one falls through the cracks simply because they don’t know where to turn for help.”

In addition to linking users to services in their area, the app also has a rating system similar to Yelp. This system allows people to leave star ratings and reviews on shelters, food services, hotlines, and legal aid. 

The ratings not only help users differentiate between services in their area — but they also provide invaluable feedback to the nonprofits, organizations, and government programs that service them. 

“We've been asking for an app like this for a number of years now,” Scott Kerman, executive director of Blanchet House, told Portland news station KGW.

In mid-January, Cao won the 2024 Congressional App Challenge in Oregon’s First District for her work with ShelterBridge — outcompeting 12,682 student submissions. 

Since the app first launched, Cao and her growing ShelterBridge team — which includes enterprising high schoolers and college students from across the nation — have expanded services to California, Philadelphia, Seattle, Los Angeles, and North Carolina. 

“Claire and the team she’s working with deserve all the credit in the world because they're doing something that frankly nobody else has really stepped up to do,” Kerman said. 

“To have the kind of technology that we use every day with hotels and other kinds of reservations [to] help people get into safe, supportive and dignified shelter would be a game changer for our community.”

Although the app started as a class project, Cao said ShelterBridge’s success has far surpassed her expectations. 

“I do hope to keep it up,” she told Oregon outlet KOIN 6 News, as she looked ahead to college and beyond. “I’ve made a lot of efforts to expand it to other cities as well — and it’s something I can mostly do from a computer or my laptop at home.”

I don’t want to recap the conversation because it was exhausting and I’m still reeling from it but I don’t understand how if your complaint about one of the two viable candidates is that you don’t know what their deal is you don’t just….go find out more.
