Of course there are many things the adaptation of hotd is doing terribly (and I am having so much fun complaining about them), but one of the things I think they actually did extremely well in this episode was the sheer destruction wrought by the dragons. Like, it almost felt like the battle was less about the dragons themselves and more about showing the wholesale and indiscriminate destruction that they wrought when unleashed. Soldiers of all sides and loyalties getting crushed underfoot and really reinforcing this thing that GRRM has been saying over and over again: that dragons are nukes. That it doesn't matter who or to what end they're unleashed in service of, only that people are going to die horribly and pointlessly, and that what's left in their wake won't be able to be fixed. Like Harrenhall itself, standing in ruins as a monument to the fact that, even hundreds of years later, what's been destroyed by dragons (nuclear weapons) cannot be fixed by man in a way that matters (nuclear exclusion zones).

okay but can we talk about 'Mystery of the Urinal Deuce' because this episode is literally EVERYTHING when it comes to Stan and Kyle's friendship. Marsh is playing dumb the whole episode and Kyle is losing his goddamn mind over it. The betrayal. The DRAMA.
Stan in this scene knows damn well that everything is a conspiracy (he admits as much later in the episode and knows that Kyle thinks the same thing). And Kyle knows damn well that Stan out of everyone should also know this, because Stan is the one person he can usually count on to back him up on this type of shit. But Stan is the one messing with him in this episode, so we get these fun moments of Stan letting loose and enjoying pranking his friend Kyle.
Many see the Assburger's duology as the establishment and turning point of Stan’s character. And while it certainly establishes his clinical depression, I’d argue it in no way establishes either his tendency towards depression/melancholy OR cynicism as both of those have always been present from the beginning (but that’s another discussion for another day. I already basically wrote an essay on that a longgg time ago that maybe I’ll share later).
When it comes to a true  ‘turning point’ for Stan’s character, I think of ‘Raisin’s’ ‘from Season 7, which expands on his already present tendency towards sensitivity and annoyances with general society and evolves it into a deep melancholy and detachment from society (at times bordering on nihilism, something we see more of from Stan post Season 7’s ‘Raisins’ such as in the ‘Douche and Turd’ episode in Season 8 and many other episodes). I don’t see the ‘You’re Getting Old’ episode as the turning point for Stan’s character at all. I see it more as an extension of what I actually view as his turning point episode of ‘Raisin’s’.
What I love about ‘Mystery of the Urinal Deuce’ is it is a post ‘Raisin’s’ episode where Stan just gets to play around, which is sadly something we just don’t see from Stan post-season 7 as often.
Kyle has always been the easiest target for Cartman not even necessarily because of his traits, but because of his reactions. He is super reactive to everything, and Stan knows this. Unlike Cartman, Stan respects this and usually stands up for Kyle when this aspect of him is taken advantage of. But at the same time, this doesn’t mean that Stan doesn’t like to tease Kyle at times - because let’s be real; Kyle’s high reactivity would make it so fun to mess with him. And in this episode, Stan takes advantage of that.
And while usually I hate people taking advantage of Kyle in this way, it is so goddamn refreshing to see Stan just being able to let go of all the heavy shit that’s been so key to his character emotionally post-Season 7 and just play around with his bestie in this episode, something I think that at the core of his character he ultimately just wants to be able to do at the end of the day. you can TASTE the shit-eating grin in his voice. he is having the TIME OF HIS LIFE watching Kyle spiral. stan tries so GODDAMN hard to find happiness throughout the series to no avail, so it’s refreshing the times he succeeds and gets to just actually be himself.
Later on in the episode, Stan is also just able to let loose. His ‘Well dude, maybe we’re just badass, have you ever thought of that?’ later on in the episode is said so nonchalantly with him literally smirking, and it cracks me up every time as he tries to appease Kyle’s doubts. He is thoroughly enjoying pranking his friend.
like yes give me more of this next season?? give me more of stan actually getting to be a kid and mess around with his best friend instead of drowning in existential dread 24/7? please and thank you?
#south park#kyle broflovski#stan marsh#character analysis#stan marsh joy sighting (RARE)#mystery of the urinal deuce#this episode is criminally underrated#stan choosing chaos is my favorite stan#sometimes your friend has to lovingly gaslight you#it’s just what besties do#let stan be happy 2025#local child takes break from existential dread to troll his bestie#again pls why can’t max just let me screenshot im simply too lazy to be going on my laptop to pirate shit to share on tumblr#anyways I love this ep cuz it it shows how secure their friendship is despite their flaws#Stan knows Kyle well enough to know where the line is#it’s so cute how he goes with that sweet spot of#‘I’m gonna drive you fucking insane but in a way that won’t actually damage our friendship#max I do actually pay for u in that my stepdad pays for u so pls pay no attention to the pirating allegations#but also max if you’re listening just let me fking screenshot and then maybe we won’t have a problem#I have so much I wanna share but again am too lazy to pirate scenes even tho it wouldn’t take all that long#but like cmon max just let me screenshot short sections it’s so goddamn stupid you won’t allow it😢#this would make it so I wouldn’t have to resort to other measures#just realized I made Stan’s dialogue here a bit… purple?#oh god does this make me colorblind like my dad and bro#or does the fact I noticed it make me… not colorblind?#usually I try to use the exact hex codes for the boys dialogue but was lazy here lmao

He's surprisingly quiet for such a big boy :3c When he wants to be, anyway. uwu Part one of a little thing that is definitely getting away from me, because the idea of plopping my Krampus inspired Eclipse down in the same vicinity as @naffeclipse little hunter and cryptid boys has been plaguing me for a month and... uwu well ye.. COUPLE THINGS. This is definitely set in a sort of pre-reveal moment... Yes, Moon is roasting marshmallows just to watch them burn (also assuming the fire isn't bright enough to swap him to sun because I didn't think about that till it was too late) and I'm having way too much fun with the demon-y shadow hands already. Brain started dying trying to sort out how to face in the panel after this last one SO break time for sleep and then back on this uwu. Also gives me time to think angles and a lil dialogue to go with it. BUT BOY he sure looks happy to see them :3c Yea?

If Brambleclaw was written like that in PO3 as an example of a "good" father, was kind of light was Squirrelflight shown in as the three's mother?
It shifts over the course of the arc. In the first two books, she's FIRMLY strict and distant. I have mostly negative feelings about it. In The Sight and Dark River, they are trying to "foreshadow" the big reveal by showing Squilf as if she's less of a mom to her kids than the "nurturing" women who birthed their own.
While she has a pretty equal mix of moments where she's being supportive or harsh when you tally them, a LOT of emphasis is put on how she doesn't seem to like being in the nursery, how her job "keeps her away" from her children, and how she's short with them when they're just being kids in public.
Even crashes this one moment where Brambleclaw is just... playing with them before a Gathering. Leafpool is also compared to Squilf often, notably more fretful or concerned for the Three. It's frustrating-- they're trying to contrast her to them.
It's Outcast that starts to really tip the scales, though. She gets about 2 harsher moments with her kids on average in Outcast and Eclipse, outweighed by LOTS of times they're having emotional scenes. The way I LIKE to read this is that Squilf is a better parent to older kids and that it just took her some time to hit that stride.
I feel like that makes a lot of sense for her as a character. She's not a nurturer, she's a negotiator. Physically active and excitable, guiding a teenager through their adolescence just comes more naturally to her.
(though it stays frustrating that they wrote such horseshit like Squilf constantly snapping at... kittens playing, mostly so Brambleclaw can look so special and perfect in comparison.)
The more cynical side of me, though? I think it struck them that The Fire Scene wouldn't be as emotionally impactful if she meant what she said to Ashfur; "Go ahead, kill them, they're not my biokids so I don't care." She has to LOVE them to feel pain at their fury. So as the books progressed they wrote waaaay less "Nasty Squilf Moments" like in Books 1 and 2. We don't even GET one in Long Shadows, until the Fire Scene itself.
And also, I think they realized that having that Fire Scene sentiment NOT be a lie, when she raised them from birth, would be super fucked up. In a bad way. I don't think even the Erins are THAT shortsighted. I'm glad they didn't.
She spends all of Sunrise wracked by guilt though, even before the Gathering Reveal. The climax of the arc is really fixated on how miserable her and Leafpool feel, and that's kinda the point. The story was building to this moment where the family crumbles apart.

AU Writing suggestion? (Perhaps) 👀👀
I've been reading a lot of your work, and you do an incredible job at everything, especially slow-burn. From your work, I couldn't help but think you would write an incredible story of Aziraphale and Crowley in an arranged marriage AU. (Enemies to lovers???) (Whatever era you'd prefer) It may not be your cup of tea, but I wanted to share the idea in case it ever intrigued you.
It would also be a very creative one at that, considering how you're always able to put Good Omens references in your stories in subtle ways. (Those references are always enjoyable to see) Love your work. Keep it up!

Oh, Soldier.
The raccoons are fed and I even groomed them. They all needed a good brushing. My gloves are covered in raccoon fur, so I’m afraid you’ll have to deal with the sight of my bare hands.
[His hands are pale, quite small and covered in faded scars. Spy’s nails are perfectly manicured.]
I made you tea and broth. You need to keep your fluids up. Can you sit up, mon amour?
Oh, your poor helmet. Here, let’s get that off. Oh, it’s covered in stickers. Silly Soldier.
[Spy’s already taken the liberty of turning the lights off. There’s only faintly glowing Christmas lights strung up, that provide a faint light.]
Merde. I’ll get your helmet cleaned up, my sweet Soldier.
[He kisses his forehead.]
Rest. Drink your tea and broth, alright? I’ll bring you something sweet in a bit.
[The blonde raccoon kit is in Spy’s arms. He seems to be bottle feeding the small thing. He’s humming a slight lullaby.]
Don’t worry. I’ll feed him for the moment.
America is safe, Soldier. I checked before I came here.
@handsome-red-rogue
"Hii Mour. You didn't need to do all that for me..." Soldier is talking more slowly than usual. He's still tired, but he's always happy to see Spy. He sits up to drink the broth and allows Spy to take his helmet.
"I love you. Are you safe? And- my friends? My team? ...Sorry. I've been- worrying about them. Uh, especially you. I don't doubt you! I know how strong you are, and-and you're fully capable, and- you look really pretty with those lights behind you..." He's rambling again.
"Oh, the raccoons- the others should've been fed. I think. Did I? ...Uh- Is he taking the bottle okay? ...You're really good at that. You're good at everything. I love you."

OKAY VASHWOOD KIDS ON THE HEAD THIS AFTERNOON HHNNG
While I do think that them having kids of their own is super cute and such a nice thing for them both, I am personally a Vash and Wolfwood adopting children truther. Best part is it was Not Even On Purpose.
The times are less aggressive, their lives are less violent (compared to before) and they are both a lot more free. They aren’t used to living a settled life, in spite of finally having a little home of their own at the outskirts of December.
They still travel around without an aim or clear purpose most often than not. They would visit old friends and the times they decided to stay in a place for a bit longer would either be at Home or the Hopeland Orphanage.
They like it that way. It’s familiar and they don’t have to watch for their heads as much as they did before. They are finally experiencing a much more gentler life of their own.
I imagine them stumbling with some kids, let’s say three, that live on their own in one of their trips. They offer to bring them to the Hopeland Orphanage like they usually do to orphaned kids, so they can live more peacefully. They accept after some more convincing.
During that trip they get to live a bit more closely with the children compared to the way they do with the kids back at the orphanage. They love them oh they do, with all their heart, but the closeness they experience with everyone at the orphanage is more of a caretaker sort of approach and nothing as intimate as taking care of them so personally.
The bumpy trip basically obligated them to be more close to the kids, spending nights and days with them, protecting them from danger, cooking meals for their little group of five, spending a few days in different towns to unwind and buy more resources. It was nice, traveling together like that (even if it did get a little dangerous every now and then when they stumbled upon a fight or two).
The kids start to get very attached to them, and both Vash and Wolfwood admittedly were feeling the same way too. They knew they couldn’t keep the kids, not with their wanderers life style and the danger that was still always present (not as terrible as before, but trouble would always be a part of them as it seemed).
Once they got to December to finally leave the kids at the Orphanage, they decide it’s a good time for them to have one of their long stays at the orphanage until their next trip. All of the kids love them both, and they return the sentiment as well. However, it’s evident how their closeness was bigger with the kids they just traveled around with. They knew a bit more about each other with more precision, they were a bit more affectionate with them, the kids would look for Wolfwood and Vash so they could spend more time together. It wasn’t rare for the kids to go and sleep with either of them at night or taking naps with them, but those three particular children would always sleep with them, all snuggled up and warm in their embrace.
It was nice, it almost felt like a little family of their own. Wolfwood remembers how nice it was to live in the orphanage with the other kids, and Vash loved his time with Rem and Knives when they were little, not to mention the people at Home later on, but neither of them really had a grasp of something in their lives they could call wholly theirs, something stable, something constant.
Their stay at the orphanage lasted from their usual month and a half to two months, and then three, until they thought it was a good time for some time of their own back at their little house (living with so many kids always around the corner didn’t provide much space for privacy, much less now that the three kids would follow them as if they were their shadows).
The kids were disappointed and a little sad that their time to leave had come already, even if they had stayed longer than what they usually did this time. Their three little kids were the ones that looked the most anguished from them all, and neither Nick or Vash missed that detail.
When they arrived to their home, they cleaned first, the dust had settled in their house and they could barely move without gusts of it coming to invade their lungs. After they quickly got rid of the most they could they finally got to rest and get some alone time of their own.
The days passed, and the quiet time between them was appreciated, but it felt a bit too quiet. They had quickly grown used to the noise that came with being around the kids in that short time. Maybe it was thanks to the fact that their lives were much kinder now, but something inside of them itched at the thought of not having the kids by their side, of not being together.
They knew what it was after sparing it a second to think of it a bit more.
“You know, I think it would be nice if we stay in here for a bit longer” Vash said out of the blue one day while they were making breakfast together, a soft and genuine smile hanging on his face.
“Yeah, I was thinking the same thing” Wolfwood answered back with a smile of his own, focused at chopping a portion of vegetables a bit too big for two people, it was probably enough to feed five mouths perhaps.

Murphy is blind and old so his hearing isn't quite what it used to be, but also I'm deceptively light on my feet. With socks on, he has no idea where I am when I come into the room, but he gets SO EXCITED when I randomly materialize next to him and call him a good boy. Or when we're playing I'll stop and get really quiet and he'll have no idea where I am until I make kissy noises. It's like playing peek-a-boo with a baby hahah

The fact Minthara would be acting a little odd socially in Drow society, being just attributed to the fact her mother - Sos'umptu, was by all the accounts that are written about her, a social hermit, feels fitting somehow.
The way no one questioned her eventual discconnect at pleasure parties or disassociative stare in the middle of the noble talk. The way she would silently grieve the people she thought she could love or be her friends, because she wanted that familial and friendly connections so badly and no one recognized it. Oh, it's just High Priestess Sos'umptu's daughter, this is to be expected.
