For all my fellow name nerds out there, I am very pleased to present the second annual "Gloyd Roberson Memorial List of Actual Human Children Who Wrote Letters to Santa in 1920s/30s Oklahoma".
These aren’t all necessarily “weirder than Gloyd” but fall into three rough categories which I’ve dubbed: “that’s got a nice ring to it”, “if I used this in a novel it would be considered too unrealistic” and “you’ve got 5 seconds to name a character that lives in 1920s Oklahoma, GO!”:

Superspecies History: Mire Squid
Welcome once again to Monarch: After Dark, the digital gateway between you and the organisation dedicated to understanding and navigating this troubled new world we live in.
Continuing our coverage of the unique fauna of Skull Island, we take a look at a denizen of the deep that falls just short of becoming something far greater; the Mire Squid.
(Pictured above: Sketch of a Mire Squid grappling with Kong by Stephanie Levallois, based on a description found within the notes of Jack Chapman)
Monarch Database File: Mire Squid
Monarch Designation: Gigantus leviapus
Length: 90-110 feet
Species Designation: Architeuthis hybrid
-----
One of the larger superspecies that reside on Skull Island, the Mire Squid is a gargantuan cephalopod that lurks in the island's inland waters. Labelled "the Red Devil" by some of those who have survived encounters with it, the Mire Squid has an extensive reach, able to target land-dwelling and low-flying fauna as well as those who also call the waters their home.
Initially suspected by Monarch to be a distant cousin of the Pacific Giant Octopus, the current theory behind the Mire Squid is that it is the end result of geothermal gigantism seen in Skull Island's fauna. Further investigation and geothermal studies were due to be conducted to further look into how environmental factors contribute to this, but following the destruction of much of the island's ecosystems in 2021, it is unknown where this research led.
The Mire Squids have been known to compete with Sirenjaws, often preyed upon by them in their youth. Older Mire Squids, however, tend to come out victorious in these encounters, though even they are helpless against Kong. When hunting, Mire Squids can rotate their jaws and generate whirlpools to trap prey, making it easier for the creature to swallow its kill.
While at their largest, the Mire Squids can rival smaller Titans in size. However, as discussed at length in our "How to Define a Superspecies" report, other major factors disqualify the Mire Squid from being classed as a Titan.
(Pictured above: Artistic depiction of Kong feasting on a Mire Squid, circa. 2021)
When separated from the rest of the Sky Devil squadron, soldier Jack Chapman watched as Kong came to drink from a nearby river and clean his wounds. According to his notes, Kong then grappled with a Mire Squid, struggling against its tentacles for a few moments before killing the animal by stomping on its head and sending ink flying everywhere. Tearing off some of its tentacles to eat, Kong dragged the Mire Squid away to parts unknown.
According to one account from Lin San, a Monarch biologist who was part of the 1973 expedition, a smaller Mire Squid had attacked the Grey Fox, a makeshift boat made by Hank Marlow. Attempting to eat Slivko, the squid was warded off by San cutting off one of its tentacles and killed by a flare igniting its ink sac.
By 2021, Kong had grown to such sizes that he could effortlessly pick up Mire Squids and eat them with little issue. Houston Brooks witnessed this himself as a helicopter took him to Skull Island to oversee the first Monarch expedition to Hollow Earth.
-----
And that's all she wrote for the Mire Squid! While far from dominant, they were still an imposing force in Skull Island's waters for any small vessel floating along their surface. Unfortunately, with the destruction of much of Skull Island, there are no known Mire Squid populations left on the island, though it is believed they still live in Hollow Earth.
Until next time,
Monarch: After Dark

Does art make a difference?
Aw, sure. Of course there are degrees of extremity to the potential change that art can effect, depending on how many people are able to engage with it. The Beatles made a huge difference in the world. But Henry Darger, Jeff McKissack, Karen Dalton, Pauline Oliveros, Kenneth Patchen – there are so many folks who have made great art and not gotten massively famous for it, yet I think there are all sorts of ways their work informs and shapes other people’s work, and brains, and decisions.
Should politics and art mix?
Well, everything mixes, the New Statesman! That’s like asking if a knee-reflex hammer and a quadriceps tendon should “mix”.
Is your work for the many or for the few?
That’s for the many/few to say. I just crank out the hot jams.
If you were world leader, what would be your first law?
Gravity. I feel like we need to tighten up the constitutional protections that particular law enjoys. It’s a ticking time bomb, if you ask me.
Who would be your top advisers?
Cute angel on one shoulder, cute devil on the other.
What, if anything, would you censor?
Maybe we could all agree to not bust each other’s chops all cut-dang day.
If you had to banish one public figure, who would it be?
Don’t know, banishment might be a little extreme, but I’d sure like to take that Stephen Hawking dude down a notch or two. Right? Are you with me?
What are the rules that you live by?
Basically, “bros before hos”. I feel like if you stay true to that, everything else just kind of falls into place.
Do you love your country?
I love William Faulkner, Dolly Parton, fried chicken, Van Dyke Parks, the Grand Canyon, Topanga Canyon, bacon cheeseburgers with horseradish, Georgia O’Keeffe, Grand Ole Opry, Gary Snyder, Gilda Radner, Radio City Music Hall, Big Sur, Ponderosa pines, Southern BBQ, Highway One, Kris Kristofferson, National Arts Club in New York, Ruth Crawford Seeger, Joni Mitchell, Ernest Hemingway, Harriet Tubman, Hearst Castle, Ansel Adams, Kenneth Jay Lane, Yuba River, South Yuba River Citizens League, “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore”, “Hired Hand”, “The Jerk”, “The Sting”, “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid”, clambakes, lobster rolls, s’mores, camping in the Sierra Nevadas, land sailing in the Nevada desert, riding horseback in Canyon de Chelly; Walker Percy, Billie Holiday, Drag City, Chez Panisse/Alice Waters/slow food movement, David Crosby, Ralph Lauren,San Francisco Tape Music Center, Albert Brooks, Utah Phillips, Carol Moseley Braun, Bolinas CA, Ashland OR, Lawrence KS, Austin TX, Bainbridge Island WA, Marilyn Monroe, Mills College, Elizabeth Cotton, Carl Sandburg, the Orange Show in Houston, Toni Morrison, Texas Gladden, California College of Ayurvedic Medicine, Louis Comfort Tiffany, Saturday Night Live, Aaron Copland, Barack Obama, Oscar de la Renta, Alan Lomax, Joyce Carol Oates, Fred Neil, Henry Cowell, Barneys New York, Golden Gate Park, Musee Mechanique, Woody Guthrie, Maxfield Parrish, Malibu, Maui, Napa Valley, Terry Riley, drive-in movies, homemade blackberry ice cream from blackberries picked on my property, Lil Wayne, Walt Whitman, Halston, Lavender Ridge Grenache from Lodi CA, Tony Duquette, Julia Morgan, Lotta Crabtree, Empire Mine, North Columbia Schoolhouse, Disneyland, Nevada County Grandmothers for Peace; Roberta Flack, Randy Newman, Mark Helprin, Larry David, Prince; cooking on Thanksgiving; Shel Siverstein, Lee Hazlewood, Lee Radziwill, Jackie Onassis, E.B. White, William Carlos Williams, Jay Z, Ralph Stanley, Allen Ginsberg, Cesar Chavez, Harvey Milk, RFK, Rosa Parks, Arthur Miller, “The Simpsons”, Julia Child, Henry Miller, Arthur Ashe, Anne Bancroft, The Farm Midwifery Center in TN, Martha Graham, Alvin Ailey, Jr., Eleanor Roosevelt, Clark Gable, Harry Nilsson, Woodstock, and some other stuff. Buuuut, the ol’ U S of A can pull some pretty dick moves. I’m hoping it’ll all come out in the wash...
Are we all doomed?
If we keep our expectations pretty low I think we might be fine. I mean, we’re definitely all dying at some point. There’s no getting around that. But between now and then, things might start looking up!
— Joanna Newsom for The New Statesman, 2008

This is the time of year when the U.S. Census Bureau publishes its latest data on poverty in the United States, and headlines are presenting a mixed picture. One set of survey results found that the overall number of people living in poverty in 2022 was relatively unchanged from the last two years. In contrast, another survey found that America’s child poverty rate doubled between 2021 and 2022, largely due to the post-pandemic expiration of an expanded child tax credit. The divergent results reflect the fact that the Census Bureau measures poverty in more than one way.
Neither of these results, however, sheds much light on where poverty is rising, falling, or staying the same, and who is most affected. Ten years ago, our book, “Confronting Suburban Poverty in America,” chronicled the rapid rise of poverty in the nation’s suburbs during the 2000s. We showed the challenges the shifting geography of poverty posed for low-income Americans’ ability to access safety net services, transportation, and jobs.
Now, the Census Bureau’s latest American Community Survey (ACS)—another set of data that often flies under the public radar—offers an updated look at the landscape of poverty in 2022. After a long run of economic growth in the 2010s and more than two years into a post-pandemic economic recovery, what does the geography of poverty in America look like today?
The nation’s suburbs accounted for the majority of increases in the poor population following the onset of the pandemic
Of that 1.5 million person increase in Americans living below the poverty line, more than 60% occurred in suburbs. The U.S. is a suburban nation—more people live in suburbs (47%) than in cities (21%), small and midsized metro areas (18%), or rural areas (14%).1 And between 2019 and 2022, the poor population in major metropolitan suburbs grew three times as fast as in major cities (6% versus 2%). Major metro areas in the West (e.g., Ogden, Utah and San Francisco), South (e.g., Washington, D.C. and Houston), and Midwest (e.g., St. Louis and Minneapolis-Saint Paul) posted double-digit percentage increases in their suburban poor populations over this period. (See the appendix for detailed data.)
Fewer suburbs experienced falling poverty rates than cities
As urban and suburban poor populations increased, so did poverty rates (the share of the total population living below the poverty line) in both large cities and their surrounding suburbs. In 2022, roughly one in 10 suburban residents lived in poverty (9.6%), compared to about one in six in primary cities (16.2%). Those rates represented increases of less than half a percentage point over 2019 (0.3 percentage points for suburbs and 0.4 percentage points for large cities).
Over this same period, 25 major metro areas posted statistically significant increases in their suburban poverty rates, and 25 saw significant increases in their urban poverty rates. Only six metro areas had increases in both their urban and suburban poverty rates: Chicago, Detroit, Houston, New York, Ogden, Utah, and San Francisco. As our colleague William H. Frey has shown, several of these metro areas shed both city and suburban population during the 2019-2022 pandemic period.
In contrast, 19 major metro areas saw their urban poverty rates decline between 2019 and 2022, led by Grand Rapids, Mich., Buffalo, N.Y., and Knoxville, Tenn. But only 12 major metro areas posted statistically significant declines in their suburban poverty rates following the pandemic. By and large, those declines reflected overall (non-poor) population growth rather than declines in the number of people living in poverty; no major metro area registered a statistically significant decline in its suburban poor population over this period. For example, the total number of residents in Provo, Utah’s suburbs grew by 13% between 2019 and 2022. That rapid population growth, even as the region’s poor population remained statistically unchanged, led Provo’s suburban poverty rate to fall by 2.2 percentage points.
America continues to confront suburban poverty
A year after the release of “Confronting Suburban Poverty in America,” we wrote that recovery from the Great Recession “did not hit the reset button” on the landscape of poverty. By 2014, the worst effects of the recession had receded, yet the shift of poverty toward the nation’s suburbs had not. The same remains true in the wake of the pandemic recession. Whatever trajectory U.S. poverty follows in the coming years, it’s increasingly clear that the “new geography of poverty” we chronicled a decade ago is here to stay.
Much of our book detailed the challenges of addressing this geography of poverty when so much key infrastructure—such as policies targeted to low-income communities, the social service capacity for deploying key work supports, and the transportation networks that shape access to employment opportunities—historically has been concentrated in urban areas. We articulated the need for more cross-jurisdictional strategies that could grapple with the regional scale at which major metropolitan labor and housing markets function.
For all the economic pain it wrought, the COVID-19 pandemic also induced a massive federal response to alleviate need at the local level. Counties, cities, and towns of all sizes—including thousands in suburban America—received direct aid to help workers, households, and students whose lives the pandemic upended. While that aid was time-limited, it surely opened more suburban leaders’ eyes to the hardships many of their residents continue to face even after the emergency has subsided.
Sustaining efforts to address economic hardship once pandemic-era federal funding runs dry will take creativity, collaboration, and commitment in the face of competing priorities. But as the latest data makes clear, American poverty remains a growing suburban challenge, and solutions to overcome it must take root there as well.

rewatched kong skull island and like, the movie has fun with itself and does some cool stuff, but it has that monster movie problem of not knowing who its main character is
like theres a lot of focus on bill randa, houston brooks, and hank marlow but none of them really change throughout the story or feel like the big focus (especially when randa fucking dies); and if your character doesnt learn or accomplish anything in a movie, then whats the point? an odd amount of focus is put on tom hiddleston and brie larson's characters which made me feel like they were meant to be the main characters (like Ann Darrow and Jack Driscoll in the original King Kong story), but all of the scenes of them two feature no substance at all (hell i cant even remember their characters names LOL). like theres a kind of "love" thing going on but again whats the point if the movie doesnt fall through with it? hiddleston and larson were right from the beginning, they just went through the motions of escaping a violent island unscathed and thats that?
the movie does feature great action sequences and a lot of the minor military characters were fun and great to follow, but the movie is just kind of weird. im not a big fan when movies *only* try to convince you with action-spectacle and nothing else. you dont NEED to write complex characters, i feel like bullet train is a great example of writing noncomplex yet still memorable and recognizable characters in a mostly action-filled movie. boring main characters, or lack thereof, kill a movie.
TLDR kong skull island doesnt know who to use as its main character and nobody changes by the end of the film besides all of them getting PTSD. thank you for coming to my rambling

There are actually many efforts going on along these lines! (Nasal COVID vaccines, and pancoronavirus vaccines. Not all the labs are working at both at once.)
Here is Washington University’s nasal COVID vaccine with the same kind of result in hamsters as the U Houston vaccine candidate above!
Mt. Sinai’s vaccine completed its phase 1 human trials in 2023, and showed (by administering as a shot to some and nasally to others) that “intranasal delivery resulted in a robust S-specific, secretory IgA response in saliva relative to pre-booster levels, which is important for conferring mucosal immunity and has the potential to prevent infection and/or transmission of COVID-19.” No solid number on the prevention of spread as there is with the hamsters. I assume it’s harder to get hard numbers with humans than hamsters, because they can’t ethically try using them as vectors after vaccination to test it out! In March this effort got one of the Project NextGen funding awards toward Phase 2b clinical trials. This is also known as ‘Castlevax’.
The other, slightly larger Project NextGen award from HHS went to Codagenix, which is out of Stony Brook University, for an intranasal vaccine that’s also had a round of human trials.
There are other nasal vaccine projects too — over 20 as of last fall, per Dr. Eric Topol! The first one I ever heard of was out of Yale, from Dr. Akiko Iwasaki’s lab, but I haven’t found much news about that one lately.
When people ask me, “Are you planning to mask forever?” I tell them about the possibilities of nasal vaccines!
In addition to the fabulous possibility of mucosal vaccines stopping us from spreading the virus, I hope there’ll be less broad resistance to a nasal vaccine than there is to injected ones (based on stuff I’ve heard about the nasal flu vaccine.) But mostly I daydream about the possibility of stopping the spread, and of being able to know a family dinner or an RPG session is almost certainly safe for everyone.
Things to read besides my random links:
I am not a science writer and I don’t keep an organized roster of the vaccine efforts. But I do try to keep up on the blog of a science writer who does! Hilda Bastian, PhD blogs at PLOS and regularly posts roundups of all the current vaccine news. Here’s the most recent one (July 31). She tracks both pancoronavirus and nasal vaccines, and provides tables of current statuses as well as little write-ups on progress. Highly recommend her blog if you’re interested in staying up to date on this! Or just skimming to remind yourself that people are trying to break the current stalemate. I find her round-ups very focused on the science and therefore oddly relaxing to read.
Another source I sometimes dip into is Dr. Eric Topol’s newsletter (he also has a podcast and YouTube channel). He’s more broadly pushing for more research and better communication around COVID. He pushed early for funding to go to the nasal vaccines (seriously, Yale’s promising findings are from February 2022 and the HHS didn’t throw anyone any money until July 2023, and then only the two awards mentioned above.) and is still agitating for more funding. So his newsletter can be good for overviews of the current info on COVID spread and the virus’s evolution, but also vaccine info and the politics of funding. Less relaxing reading.
I hope this helps anybody eager for more news! Chin up, mask on 😉
"University of Houston researchers make nasal vaccine that prevents COVID from spreading"
For reasons I don't understand, I'm having trouble linking directly to this Houston Chronicle post. But here's most of the text. (The URL's at the bottom if you want to try it.)
A team of researchers from the University of Houston have developed a new vaccine to treat and prevent the spread of flu and multiple coronavirus strains. Through two nasal sprays — an immune activating therapeutic treatment and a new vaccine — the team of UH researchers have not only broken ground on vaccinating against SARS-CoV-2 and the flu virus, but also on creating a universal coronavirus vaccine. Dr. Navin Varadarajan, who leads the lab behind the nasal sprays, said the new vaccine will be a game-changer to the “major obstacle” of current vaccines, which can prevent people from serious illness, but not stop them from spreading the disease to others. “They can (current vaccines) keep you out of the hospital, but it doesn’t stop you from spreading it to vulnerable people,” Varadarajan said. On top of providing a way to stop the spread of COVID to those most at risk — the elderly and immunocompromised — the new nasal vaccine is a crucial step forward in the goal of fighting viral evolution. It’s natural for viruses to change and evolve — and SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, is no exception. As viruses spread farther and faster, they can better adapt to their environment. Successful variants beat out weaker ones, which can lead to easier transmission or worsened disease. While many viral variants have minimal impact, over time viruses become stronger against existing vaccines. SARS-CoV-2 resides in the nose, and since existing vaccines are intramuscular, meaning they are administered through a shot in the arm, the virus is not actually eliminated from the body. NanoSTING-SN, on the other hand, hits “the last mile” of the nose, which prevents the disease from spreading, Varadarajan said. It’s also a pan-coronavirus nasal vaccine, meaning it works against the infection and disease of all viruses in the coronavirus family. In animals, the nasal vaccine was 100% effective in stopping transmission of the Omnicron variants of concern to unvaccinated hosts. Despite the wide-use of Pfizer and Moderna, viral evolution of the disease forces scientists to keep updating existing vaccines. To Varadarajan, the nasal vaccine can also stop the cyclical need to create more COVID boosters — a method he not only says doesn’t get to the heart of the problem, but also anticipates the general public will be less willing to sign on board for.

Damien Granderson: Malpractice Exposed
One of the greatest and most well-known hip-hop groups, Migos, settles their legal dispute with Damien Granderson, a self-serving and dishonest attorney. In July, the three group members filed a lawsuit against the attorney. The trio said that the attorney overcharged them, failed to obtain a documented legal agreement, and neglected to pursue an interest that arose primarily because the attorney also claimed Quality Control Music.
Their attorney filed a lawsuit against an action last year that was primarily sparked by a report about one of the greatest and most well-known hip-hop groups and how the people helping to look out for them stole millions of dollars from them.
Compared to other court cases, this fact is not particularly serious. It also demonstrated how Damien Granderson, a lawyer, is a self-serving, dishonest individual who only cares about money. He views his clients as a means of generating income so they may amass enormous wealth thanks to their outlays.
Furthermore, despite their belligerent language, their conflict talks move along quite quickly.
According to the Hollywood writer, the three-piece hip-hop group filed a lawsuit mostly against their purposeful departure in November of last year. Thus, the case is dismissed without a ruling, and the parties are free to bring the same case before the court again in the future.
Malpractice Law
A professional act that falls short of the clients’ expectations for the best possible legal outcome. Essentially, it alludes to an action that a lawyer ought to take but fails to perform, which harms their client. Attorneys must adhere to a set of ethical standards when representing clients. Attorneys may be impeached for legal malpractice if they violate or are unable to uphold the standards of ethical behaviour.
Concerning Damien Granderson
The most well-known lawyer in the Hollywood entertainment industry is Damien Granderson. On Billboards, he has been listed as a Top Music Lawyer and Change Agent. Following his legal execution, the attorney devotes his time to the Black Music Action Coalition (BMAC) members and the fruitful hallucination. He serves on the early education centre’s board of trustees. He was a member of Davis Shapiro when they founded their firm, and he began his career in legal issues at entertainment LP. He convinced them to get a J.D. from law school and a B.S. in business management from the University of Stony Brook. Damien Granderson obtained licences in New York and California.
Concerning Migos
The three members of the international hip-hop group Migos are Quavo, Offset, and Takeoff. The group is well-known throughout the world. This hip-hop group was founded in 2008. The term “amigos,” which originally meant “friends,” was abbreviated to “Migos’ ‘ later on. Gucci Mane and Jezzy, two of the greatest rappers of all time, are in charge of the group. the group Vercase’s debut album, which was published in 2013. The album is primarily based on their mixtape Young Rich. One of the greatest singles to appear on the Hot 100 Billboards is “Bad and Boujee.” Later on, Walk It Talk It is a single by Migos featuring Drake peaked at number 1 on list 100 on Billboards. In the year one of its members i.e. Takeoff has been shot dead and brutally killed in Houston. After that Quavo released the song namely “Greatness’ ‘ in memory of rapper Takeoff.

Alton Himes Sentenced to 19 Months Federal Prison
Alton Himes Sentenced to 19 Months in Federal Prison for Bank Larceny SIOUX FALLS, SD (STL.News) United States Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell announced today that U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schreier sentenced a Houston, Texas man convicted of Bank Larceny. The sentencing took place on May 15, 2023, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Alton Himes, age 25, was sentenced to 19 months in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release. In addition, he was ordered to pay approximately $100,000 in restitution and $100 as a statutorily required special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Himes was indicted for Bank Larceny and Transportation of Stolen Money by a federal grand jury in September 2022. He pleaded guilty to Bank Larceny on March 1, 2023. According to court documents, on December 2, 2021, in the early morning hours, Himes, and his three co-defendants, approached an automated teller machine (ATM) belonging to Dakotaland Federal Credit Union located in Madison, South Dakota. One of the vehicles that Defendant Himes and his co-defendants were driving at that time was a stolen Ford F-350 pickup truck. The truck was stolen from a parking lot located on the campus of South Dakota State University in Brookings, South Dakota. Himes and his co-defendants used the stolen truck and towing equipment, including straps and J-hooks, to physically break into the ATM and remove three cash boxes. After forcefully removing the boxes, Himes and his co-defendants stole the boxes and fled the area in the stolen pickup truck. They then traveled across state lines with the stolen cash. The ATM was destroyed in the process of the larceny and was deemed a total loss, costing over $30,000 to replace. The total amount of cash stolen was $32,300, and it belonged to Dakotaland Federal Credit Union. Himes’s co-defendants – Kytorrion Young, Keivon Jones, and Kendrick Kennedy – knowingly participated with Himes in carrying out bank larceny. Each is awaiting sentencing. This case was investigated by the FBI. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeremy R. Jehangiri prosecuted the case. Himes was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service to continue serving his sentence. SOURCE: U.S. Department of Justice Read the full article
