Antiques are popular for many reasons: they tell a story and are almost always one-of-a-kind. So when we have the opportunity to wear a piece with history around our necks or on our fingers, we jump at it. But, buying and caring for antique jewelry isn’t easy. If you’re in the market for something old, here are a few things to keep in mind.

Go to a Reputable Buyer

Sellers of vintage jewelry usually go far and wide looking for gorgeous pieces that have a true history, so if you’re looking for something truly special, it’s vital to go to a reputable buyer. Ask Questions

Once you see a piece you love, be sure to ask questions! A good vintage seller will know where the piece came from and even roughly how old it is, the gem stones included and what it may have been used for. The more you know, the more special the piece becomes and the more you can be sure it is right for you.

Look for Clues

If you are looking for something that is sterling silver, pay attention to the weight. Ask to try the piece on and to feel it in your hands. Costume jewelry will feel very lightweight, while a real piece of sterling silver will have substance. You also want to pay attention to certain markings on the jewelry that signify if it is 14k gold or a certain metal.

Be Gentle

Harsh chemicals and ultrasonic machines can ruin vintage jewelry. Instead, clean them with gentle products, or take them to a jewelry store to get them cleaned professionally. You also want to stay away from bleach and avoid submerging the pieces for too long as it can cause stones to fall off.

Learn to Love the Flaws

Vintage jewelry is special because each piece tells its own story. The story of your piece may be a scratch or two that you just can’t remove. Learn to love this! Those scratches are a big part of that story and by working hard to remove them, you are removing the beauty of the item.

Take it Off!

You love your gorgeous new addition and never want to take it off, but in order to keep it in top condition, you have to. If you think you are going to sweat or be in a harsh climate for a long period of time, it’s best to take it off. This means not only removing your jewelry when you work out, but also when you spend a day strolling a farmer’s market outside, relaxing by the pool or cleaning the house.
