Houseki no Kuni's Ending Is Advocating Imperialism.
I know that my words are very strong and quite disputable, but I've seen a lot of opinions on how they think Houseki no Kuni's ending is beautiful.
Well I not only disagree, but I'm in fact quite offended by the ending.
Before I start, I want to first say that Houseki no Kuni is NOT about buddhism. I don't have any religion so I may be wrong, but as far as I know, buddhism is about reaching nirvana by gaining inner peace through self-salvation. This part is very important in buddhism. Buddhism doesn't have a savior like Jesus. No one can take you to nirvana, one must enlighten oneself. However, the lunarians and the gems forced Phos to liberate them from their "painful" eternity. (*I doubt that they were in pain though, since the author mainly depicted them as enjoying their lives so much. I don't even think that the author was serious about the story because she didn't really care to explain how and why Phos reached the conclusion of praying for everyone, while she put so much effort in showing the lovey-dovey relationship between Cairngorm and Achmea, which is not that important in the storyline.)
Now I'll talk about why I feel the ending is advocating imperialism.
The lunarians and the gems never once apologized to Phos, let alone compensated for making Phos suffer. And yet Phos wished happiness and prayed for them. I do not think this is morally okay, even if this is just a manga.
Let's look at the current Israel-Palestine war. It's clear that the entire conflict started due to Israel's attempt to colonize Palestine. Well, to me the lunarians resemble Israel, Phos is Palestine, and all the other gems are traitors who betrayed for their own sake. Would you say that every Palestinian should just shut up and die or agree to Israel's oppression because that will end the war in a way? Would you say that the countries that had been colonized by UK/France/Spain/Belgium/Japan/etc. should just forgive and forget the past because it happened long ago? Would you be able to wish happiness for the people who have abused you and don't even recognize their fault? Would you be able to accept being treated unfairly because speaking up will cause a turmoil?
At least I cannot do that. I do not condone sacrificing the victims even if that might bring more happiness to the others, especially when the others are the abusers. Peace and prosperity acquired by exploiting the weak are disgusting. Simply put it this way: Will you able to sacrifice yourself to make your abusers happy? Will you gladly acquire inner-peace after that? How will you react if someone who mistreated you considers your pain to be trivial, and says you just have to forget it?
You may think that my opinion is way too aggressive and controversial. But Houseki no Kuni's story heavily reminds me of my country's history and my personal past experience, which makes me feel sick.

Hi....If you don't mind me asking, can I ask, what are your top 7 favorite media (can be books/ manga/ anime/movies/tv series/etc) and your top 7 favorite (fictional) characters from any media? Why do you love them all? Sorry if you've answered this questions before......
Hello :D
omg i get to yell about things I like, exciting!
first im going to go with my top 7 in no special order cuz I would never be able to decide
Trigun (98, manga and stampede): I've talked WAY to much about this one but holy shit has impacted my life. The story, the characters, the pain THE SWEET SWEET PAIN MY GOD. It just mixes a lot of tropes/themes I really like. And we have 3 versions of it! How cool is that?
Steven Universe: again another classic. Discovered the show when I was young and it just grabbed my soul. Very formative and influential while I was growing up. So soft and p a i n f u l l as all thins should be :3. Plus the music is a banger. Like to this day ik songs from it. Favorite one is change btw.
Legend series (book series): no one paid attention to this series because it came out the same time as divergent and hunger games and other big titles. But I was! And it's still one of the best book series I've ever read. It totally has the 2013-2015 vibes (except for the latest one in the series, rebel) but it's....honest. not only because all the struggles in the book are real but also because the author really believes in her characters. She created them but also let them become people. Plus the writing is amazing and her description of specific moments and emotions UGH I have a huge post about it because of how cool it is. I still remember opening the first book and getting SLAPPED by the first line. Yes it's that good.
Signalis: newish game :D saw lesbians, saw violence and I was on board but I never thought the game would make me think and stare at the wall that much. So far I've played it 5 times and going for a 6th. It's so abstract and no one can decide on what's true or not but that's part of its beauty. Really clever and interesting game. Nothing is real, only lesbians with guns.
Our Flag Means Death: cool show that was about queer NOT IN THEIR TEENAGE YEARS??? IN THIS ECONOMY??? AND NOT ABOUT AIDS (sorry pose I still love you). Of course it won me over because of the queerness but also the characters themselves. It was nice to see myself in a lot of them, personality and racially wise. The fun gay pirates came to my house, destroyed my life and also gave me life. Easy as that.
Pose fx: don't like the main writer of the show too much but the rest of them ATE WITH THIS. A story about black queer woman PORTRAYED BY BLACK QUEER WOMEN. It deals with the aids crisis through the lenses of trans women and gay men but the thing in that show that blew me away was the love for femininity and the community they created around it. They actually took their abandoned and traumatized selves and became someone. They formed families that actual give support and I'm a sucker for found family. I've cried many times because I wanted Blanca to adopt me. 10/10 show about overcoming shit circumstances and the importance of community. What if I cried again.
Houseki no Kuni (manga and anime): weird manga that I've been following for YEARS because its so fucking good. The anime is beautiful and captivating af and honestly the whole thing needs to be analyzed by a Buddhist. it makes me want to learn about that religion so i can understand more. but yeah its sad, its hype, and once again its about gay rock MMM my favorite. you dont know the hours i spent looking for videos/animatic about it. hard to explain but i like to describe it as "human growth: the manga/anime"
Maybe it seems like I don't watch many movies and it's kinda true! I'm more of a shows person. but there are movies i like. maybe another day
Now onto my favorite characters but again I can't decide so this is in no special order. Also because I can't decide I'm giving the spotlight to characters that are not from the media mentioned above (for example if you dont see vash in here is because i yell about him enough like. 3 times minimum per month). Because I can. Because I'm normal about media and stories i like.
1.Steven (su): MY BOY MY MOON AND STARS. ok a lot of this list is about characters i relate to, but this one is the og. this mf is one of the kindest, awesome yet misunderstood characters of all time. theres so much rage and trauma in this little guy but there are many other feelings that get lowkey explored in the main show until BOOM the emotions explode in su future. its amazing how complex my son is. im so lucky that i got to grow up along side him in a way. and in another way it was nice to see myself kinda represented in him? fun times.
2.Tifa (ffvii): PRETTY RECENT BUT SHES THE COOLEST. ejem sorry. i love cloud, zach and the others from the game but tifa doesnt get the recognition she deserves. she survived so many tragedies and became stronger because of it. not only in body but also in mind. however she also became cautious and tries to not explode in front of others. she tries to be a safe place for people, even when shes scared. i think thats pretty admirable of her. i would say more but i dont want to risk spoiling the game but there are little moments and scenes where she just tries to be there for people because she has no one in her life anymore and fuck it makes me sad. also shes pretty hot-
3.Elektra (pose): MY QUEEN. shes just. evil sometimes. shes really a bitch to most of the characters but DAMN SHES COOL WHEN SHE IS. elektra knows she was born with a huge disadvantage in life so she grabs power like a mf and bites it. i kinda aspire to be that, to not let anyone get in my way. she just really speaks to the part of me that has bigger ambitions. but shes also smart and caring (when shes not being a bitch) and every time the world puts her down she stands up and kicks the world again. she's the power of femininity itself and yes i also think shes hot (i mean look at those cheeks of thunder) but shes like a fucking storm in a person and how i can not love that? We love poc people in power.
4.Phos (houseki no kuni): This fucking child (they're a child in my eyes) is so important to me for weird reasons. I got deep into hnk when I was in my sabbatical year. It was a time where I didn't know where I would go and phos seemed to be in a similar place. To this day it surprises me how ichikawa managed to create a "simple" character and then by all definitions made them human. I like their journey, the transformations they went through, the stages they went to cope or to confront their situation. Plus the design is pretty affff
5.Edward Teach (ofmd): I just.....really connected with this guy ok? The feeling of always being at the bottom so if you are going to rise your only option is to make people fear you but that's not true BOY HE LEFT NO CRUMBS WITH THAT WHOLE THING. he was just really cool when he entered the show and then it was "oh this guy is really fucked up actually" and he's so funny and MORE OLD POC QUEERS? FUCK YEAH. but i guess what puts him on top for me is how he explored himself and his needs. All that while being funny and tragic and gay. Really cool.
6.Anthy (revolutionary girl utena): MY DAUGHTER RRRRAAAAHHH. Anthy is a really tragic and complex character. to this day i cannot put together every reason why shes my favorite from utena. Shes tragic and my god the things she goes through break my heart every time I think about it but...shes also incredibly strong and funny and a weird keeping animals in her room. The creators did an excellent job showing her lack of agency and how she already had given up, but also showed her humanity and wish to retain things in her life that gave her joy. And movie anthy? That girl is a no nonsense girl. She will get her girlfriend no matter what from the people who abused her. She left that fucking school as a mature, smart and kind adult. We fucking stan.
7. Richard (requiem of the rose king): another recent acquired son. Idk why this one hit so much and honestly for how short the manga is (79 chapters) they did such a good job with him???? Banger themes and metaphors, banger character moments, banger GENDER moments. I've seen a few people not being able to take him seriously but idk, ir sounded honest and serious to me. A kid who has been told since birth they were a demon became one to survive but not really. Because no one with his wish can fully be a demon. Idk maybe it's cheesy but his quest for love and acceptance was a banger in my eyes (please read the manga. We can leave the anime behind). Also I like him cuz he's cool and is a character I CAN ACTUALLY COSPLAY THANK GOD-
AND THOSE ARE SOME CHARACTERS AND SOME PIECES OF MEDIA I LIKE :D IF ANYONE WANTS MORE PLS ASK.
#i feel like you weren't expecting a huge post#but yeah#it took me a while cuz#reasons#but thank you for asking! im always happy to talk about things i like#as you can see#sorry#maybe ill add the fandom tags later

I read the Houseki no Kuni manga, up until the most recent update
Here are my thoughts (SPOILERS BELOW):
- I love the dichotomy of Phos vs. other gems. The naivety yet bravery to discover secrets which leads them to a purpose. And purpose is very cruel to them, when before living idyllically was so peaceful, yet they chased after it nonetheless. They don’t accept the purpose freely given to them; they challenge this and want to constantly change. In turn this is reflected in how their physical body changes versus other gems, who do not.
- I also love how change is both seen as good and bad. For both our main character and for Lunarians. We can see Lunarians living the height of luxury, knowing most if not all things, but fully aware they are not happy. They need change. The gems were happy as is, but were also able to change and grow into new beings just by going to the moon. Phos’ changes are extremely complex; these changes are both good and bad and I could go on forever about it.
- I really have… thoughts about how the Lunarians and gems are aware they must ascend to nothingness, and yet put that purpose toward a single being, without a care in the world. Commentary on divinity? On the condition of humanity? Not sure but I have them Thoughts™️
- This is such a unique series in general. And I love it so much. It’s approach to religion and how philosophical it is is incredible. Approaching humanity’s “humanness” through a negative lens as it’s root of humanity rather than a positive lens is dope.
- It’s interesting to me how Lunarians and gems alike look down on Phos, yet they were gonna be their new savior. Phos’ divinity is a tool, not something to be venerated. Their ideals in wanting to save everyone is seen as childish, not honorable. That shift in perspective is huge, and I both love it and hate it. Nobody honors them, just pities them.

various interests include: late antiquity and early medieval history in the western mediterranean, talking about disability and ableism in france, cannibalism, monsterfucking, history of religion (particularly judaism and mormonism), horror (especially body horror), buildings and cities as sentient beings, symbiotic/parasitic relationships in fiction, hating on web 2.0, narratives that are too ambitious for their own good, game preservation, video game metanarratives, healthier attitudes towards nudity/sex/kink, and more.
i enjoy (and hyperfixate on): chainsaw man, revolutionary girl utena, fullmetal alchemist 2003 only (no brotherhood or manga here), i want to hold aono-kun so badly i could die, wrestling and particularly wwe bloodline, the locked tomb, arcane, pathologic, nier, persona 3, the handmaiden, jojo’s bizarre adventure, most of octavia butler’s work, homestuck (sigh), houseki no kuni, umineko, ff7, and others.
do not send me callout posts or donation posts, i do not care about the former and will only reblog the latter if i know the person asking (or someone is vouching for them).

heya if u dont mind me asking.... what are the treasures everyone keeps mentioning? ive read all the manga but i dont really remember it being mentioned....? sorry if its dumb i may have missed bc its hard to read through the tears TT
HNK SPOILERS
you’re totally fine, it’s a good question! ichikawa revolves houseki no kuni around themes that echo buddhism by cleverly using a ton of buddhist motifs and symbolisms to represent the guidance around it. the “seven treasures of the lotus sutra” is not directly mentioned in the series, but it is heavily referenced in how phos continuously loses and replaces their limbs throughout their journey. from what i gather, the “seven treasures of lotus sutra” refers to the collection of different minerals that symbolize the qualities of faith, perseverance, sense of shame, avoidance of wrongdoing, mindfulness, concentration, and wisdom.
金, gold
銀, silver
琉璃, lapis lazuli
頗梨, crystal
硨磲, conch shell / white coral
赤珠, ruby / red pearl
瑪瑙, carnelian
as we know from the most recent developments, phos had finally attained all treasures, and is now morphing into the artificial human that aechmea wanted to create. it seems like phos is well on their way to attaining divinity and enlightenment (through adamant’s transferred powers) in order to become a representation of a divine and eternal buddha.
i’m actually not at all educated in the proper teachings of this religion, so i ended up having to do my own little research on it. i don’t personally feel equipped enough to go in depth with my limited knowledge, so i want to refer you to @houseki-no-suffering, who has an awesome breakdown with a couple other references in their post here. i love reading their past meta analyses and i highly encourage you to check these out because their research and thoughts are enlightening!

I know you hate Evangelion for mocking Christianity but what are your thoughts on Houseki no Kuni/Land of the Lustrous for using Buddhism as an aesthetic?
Listen, and I know I'm probably gonna get trouble for this (again) but 99% of anime has to be thrown to the trash (the 1% left being educational shows or stuff like that). I stopped watching it around 2016 and my spiritual life improved a lot. You have no idea how this whole culture of escapism (異世界 - isekai) and shoving yourself into material distancing yourself from reality adjust your brain into never feeling satisfied with reality and obsessively seeking more of that material to feel fulfilled. That's why many anime fans (especially the adult ones) are socially inept and barely have any interest beside entertainment.
Second argument: anime culture is filled with paganism and values conflicting to Christian ones (sexual immorality, rivalry, violence, etc ). I googled the anime you quoted and it's all over the place (textbook nephilism agenda).
The Bible tells us to not mingle with darkness. Using it as an "aesthetic" does make any of this different. You won't catch me wearing a hand of Fatima because I think it's pretty. I don't understand why Christians who usually are very vocal against Islam somehow let the Buddhism aesthetic fly like it was any different ; both are false religion and entertaining them represent spiritual adultery. I personally think anti arab racism plays a role since many Americans will have no isssue stanning satanic east Asian cultures while antagonizing Arabs for simply existing (you'll notice many (Christian) rightoid scrotes are huge anime weebs).
The other day I stumbled upon a Christian post stating "beware of culturally accepted sins" and someone was like "especially Christians defending piracy uwu" and I got like "DUDE, REALLY?? of all the sins Christians are routinely engaging into you're chosing......PIRACY??" Mind you, their blog was filled with stupid anime shows and Marvel/super hero satanic trash, so if that wasn't the pot calling the kettle black, I don't know what that was 🥴 When talking about sins, many Christians tend to look outside FIRST, instead of within their own heart. The most dangerous sins, those that will send you to hell, are those you don't think are bad enough for God to notice, and yet He does - because He is God 😭"
A very simple example that happened to me a few weeks ago:
I stopped secular music and have been eagerly trying to seek for Christian music to cheer me up when feeling down. Buuut I back slided and happened to listen to Kyary Pamyu Pamyu newest album. Totally harmless cute poppy music, right? I mean, look at her
At least that's what I was telling to myself ("dOnt lIsTen tO sEcUlaR mUsic wItH Bad EnErgY/sINfUl LyrIcs but if it's cute and positive it should be okay🤡") .....well, I KID YOU NOT, GOD STRAIGHT UP SENT ME A WARNING IN A DREAM I DID THE VERY SAME DAY.
To put it shortly, I was on my way to work and my workplace was on the top floor of a huge building. So I took the elevator and, first clue, the inscriptions inside the building/elevator were in kana (= letter system used in Japan along kanji). But the shocker is when I entered the elevator, instead of going up....IT WENT DOWN....AND DOWN AND DOWN. And at such fast pace and for so long it's gotten scary because buildings usually don't have more than a few underground floors. ... and it got SO FAST, it reminded me of Disneyland's "Tower of Terrord"jsidjbskskz I LITERALLY FELT LIKE I WAS DESCENDING DOWN TO HELL .
Then the elevator suddenly stopped. The doors opened and we were into a dark, kinda gloomy underground. Totally different from the ground floor above that look like regular building lobby. Suddenly out of the dark, someone started talking to us (I say 'us' because I think there another person with me in the elevator). And the craziest thing is that...while the voice was totally normal and almost cute, I couldn't help but feel a deep, VISCERAL fear grip my bones like I never did before. You know, when your survival instincts are kicking in and override any sense of rationality (because that voice was totally normal and I had objectively no reason to be scared). Something was wrong with whatever was talking to us and was trying to lure us out of the elevator. And this is were I woke up. I obviously didn't need much time to make the correlation between Kyary (sweet harmless voice, kana inscription in the elevator/lobby) AND the feeling of dreadfulness that I felt during the dream. The FALLING inside the elevator is very symbolic of unrepentant souls, refusing to give up their sins, ending up in hell. It was a warning from God of what was going to happen to me if I kept entertaining secular music. Just because it appears cute and alluring doesn't mean it's any less dangerous or deadly for my soul.
So yeah, maybe to some you might think that I'm reaching, but I'm not. That's what happen when you have a close relationship with God and that despite your flaws and wrongdoings your heart is still seeking for truth and repentance. I'm far from being a good Christian but if God loves me enough to warn me off to stop entertaining demonic secular music, that's because He loves us despite our flaws.....but we HAVE to repent and make up. If we don't, and that He doesn't see in our heart the willingness to CHANGE our ways, and will surely not bother trying any longer and let us walk down into the path of eternal damnation, like he did for king Saul.
Sorry for the huge digression and I didn't even plan to talk about this dream, but I felt it was necessary in this times of incredulousness. Most Christians will think I'm crazy for stating this woman's music
is demonic. But here it is. I know what I've seen, and I know what I felt. I would rather listen to God than any naysayer. That's why I won't shut up about demonic Marvel shows or anime. GOD HAS SHOWN ME what's all about and I can't keep it for myself because I have the spiritual duty of doing so (Ezekiel 3:18).
He who has ears, let him hear.

[HNK OC Review] Sapphire
Hey there guys, gals and other gendered pals! This account has been rather quiet as of late, wouldn’t you say? A shame indeed, although we received our first public OC review request today. While the user would prefer to be left anonymous on this post, this review is available for you and them to read through. So sit down, relax and let’s do a quick review of this Houseki No Kuni OC!
Part 1 - Biography Analysis
+ some quick words in advance!
What there was to read of Sapphire’s bio was admittedly scarce. The amount of information chalked up to about 1 page and just over 500 words. While shorter character biographies are quicker to read and easier to get through - I’m a firm believer that when it comes to telling your OC’s story and telling us about them, more is always great! I would definitely suggest adding more to this bio and there are several templates for OC bios available on platforms like DeviantART and Amino.
Also, apologies if I’m mistaken, but it looks as if this and the other piece of Sapphire sent to me were created in an avatar/anime dress-up game. I’d advise instead of doing this, perhaps drawing your OC yourself or requesting/commissioning artwork from an artist instead. It just adds something more original and personal to your art and OC, plus there’s more creativity that way!
Name: Sapphire Nicknames: Saphy, the Blue Angel, Jewel
There is already a canon “Sapphire” in the Houseki No Kuni universe. However, this isn’t a huge problem. Perhaps add a colour, shade or type into her name to distinguish her from the canon character. For example, there are various diamonds in Houseki No Kuni: Diamond, Yellow Diamond and Red Diamond. Perhaps you can distinguish your Sapphire from the canon “Sapphire”. Below is a picture of some shades of sapphire and I think “Cornflower” or “Kashmir” might fit your character the best.
Credit: SpiralMuse.org
As for your character’s nicknames, perhaps add some more context, like:
Who refers to Sapphire by these names?
How did she earn these nicknames?
Does she like these nicknames?
I believe doing so would add some more dimension to your character. It would show the reader how she fits into the universe and can even allow them to determine things about their character before even reading through the entire bio. Also, I don’t think that the Gems would know what an “angel” is, given they don’t seem to have much of a grasp on human religion albeit mythological creatures stemming from these religions.
Age: Between 200-250 years old
Species: Sapphire
While I can’t say a straight-up “no” to this being an answer to this question, sapphire wouldn’t qualify as your character’s species. For this category, I’d suggest writing “Gem” or “The Bone”, as those are the most common names for the species’ of the crystalline characters in Houseki No Kuni. My apologies, just a nitpick!
Strength: 9
Sexual Orientation: Straight
Appearance: Sapphire is a blue gem with long flowing hair tied up in a ponytail. Everyone likes Sapphire’s hair because it is very sparkly and shimmers a lot in battle, making them hard to miss when they fight the Lunarians. Sapphire’s eyes are also blue. Sapphire has markings on her face which appear when she’s very angry at the Lunarians, and they don’t go away until Rutile comes to calm her down. Sapphire doesn’t like these markings but Sensei says that they make her special, but it doesn’t make her like them any more though. Sapphire has large wings made out of wax and pieces of silver that were made by Rutile, which she uses to fly and cut through her enemies with.
To begin this, in the two images that I was sent with this biography, there is very little consistency in the design, which I reckon is because the customization options varied between the two used games/apps(?). Nothing hints to this character having a wardrobe of outfits and I believe that more care should’ve gone into at least ensuring the design didn’t change so drastically and like this. Like I said, drawing it yourself or asking for art from another person can make a larger difference than you may think!
Now as for what is stated here in this portion of the bio, it is admittedly very cluttered and rather disorganized. The sentence structures are rather awkward in nature and seem to jump from one topic to the other. (eg. Rutile calming her down and Sensei’s opinion on her markings.) A few pieces of this information could definitely be removed from the “appearance” section and placed into another, like “personality” or “relationships”. Please stay true to the fact that this is an “appearance” description and not a description of everything under the sun.
There is a strong emphasis on Sapphire’s beauty and strength in this portion, which is alright, although it comes off as just slightly conceited. (Though I think I’m alone on that stance, nor was mentioning that opinion truly important lmao.) I have a slight problem with her two most apparent traits, I will confess. Sapphire’s facial markings and wings.
What struck me as odd about the facial markings is that such things have never been seen in the canonverse, it just seems so alien and frankly unnecessary. The markings are cited as only showing up when she is angry and sound as though they serve no sense or purpose other than displaying this single fact. While there is a potential for some interesting OC lore, I would personally suggest removing this feature unless you have a logical way of explaining their presence on her face/body.
The gems also wear thick coats of powder across their bodies, remember? If these markings were anywhere, I imagine they’d exist within/on Sapphire’s crystalline body and would struggle to show up through this powder... This concept is just very confusing and I can’t think of any logical reasons/examples to give you that would make them work.
Now for the wings, it’s obvious that this was inspired by the Greek tale of Icarus. I personally think that your concept is interesting but it brings up many questions, both for the sake of character-building and well, science.
Why would Rutile create Sapphire a set of wings? How come none of the other Gems get their own wings? Did it take Sapphire time to learn how to use their new wings? In Houseki No Kuni, the laws of physics are constantly defied, but seeing a character flying with wings made from a metal that is 655 lb per cubic foot seems like science the creators wouldn’t push against... Ahem, anyways, I believe these are questions you should explore if you plan on keeping the implemented features there.
Personality: Sapphire is an emotionless character who is very strong and works alone whenever she can. She thinks that she is too dangerous to work alongside other Gems because she could hurt them when she gets angry or made in battle. This is why Sapphire asks to work alone. Sapphire also wants to protect her friends very much and that’s why she’s always so angry at the Lunarians for taking away the other Gems. Sapphire also competes a lot with Phos because they’re both strong Gems only Sapphire is more loyal and useful to Sensei more than Phos was. Sapphire also doesn’t like Padparashadda very much because Padparashada isn’t helpful to Sensei either when he’s asleep all the time, and because he makes Rutile really upset which Sapphire doesn’t like.
Emotionless, hm? Given the fact that she supposedly have markings that trigger as a result of an emotion (anger), I would hardly go to say she’s emotionless. In this paragraph, she’s listed as: angry, protective, competitive, loyal and passionate - all of which are emotions.
Just like in the “appearances section”, there is information in this paragraph that would fit better elsewhere, like her relationships with the listed characters, whose affinity and history with are never explained in this bio.
I think that there are definitely more traits you could add to Sapphire’s personality. She is rather simplistic and I believe there is a lot of potential for her to be much more. Perhaps read about sapphires and find out what they symbolize for some inspiration or even randomly generate personality traits/attributes in online generators! Spice things up a little, make this OC more personal, make them feel more real.
Likes: Sensei, killing Lunarians, blue roses, King, her wings, being strong, the night time Dislikes: Phos, Padparashadda, when the lunarians get away, seeing broken gems, getting very angry
Powers: She has wings that let her fly and attack the Lunarians in order to make sure they cannot return back to the moon. Sapphire is stronger than Phos
Another useless piece of info, but you’ve spelt Padparadscha wrong a number of times. It’s not so hard to do a quick spellcheck! I probably sound like a broken record, but the wings continue not to make much sense to me, and I think you need to revisit the concept a little more. Given how you explained them, they sound very very powerful, seemingly strong without consequence. Also, the fact that Sapphire is stronger than Phos would be more believable and intriguing if Sapphire had clearer motifs and a more developed personality.
Her likes and dislikes are rather generic, which admittedly broke my interest a little. I’d suggest adding some likes and dislikes that reflect Sapphire’s character a little better than her love for murdering the Moon People.
The characters she likes and dislikes also may leave the reader curious. Though you went into slight detail about why Sapphire and Phosphophyllite aren’t besties, seeing more info on relationship with Sensei, Padpa and the aforementioned Rutile would be great.
Backstory: Sapphire was born on the Cord Shore and taken to the school by Sensei. Sapphire liked to cling to Sensei because she saw him as a father and always wanted to please him. When Sapphire was growing up, Sensei could tell that she was powerful when he saw Sapphire’s markings, which showed up when she got mad after seeing some gems return to the building broken by the Lunarians. Sensei let Sapphire fight earlier because he knew she could protect the gems with her hardness and her ability. One day, Sapphire was in battle but the Lunarians escaped too quickly, making her very angry. Rutile gave Sapphire a gift which was a set of wings made out of wax and silver so that the Lunarians could never escape her again. Sapphire’s wings were so powerful she didn’t have to use a sword anymore and could take down even more Lunarians every day with only her wings.
*inhales*
Oh boy.
Ok, uh, I feel as though Sapphire’s backstory makes her seem like a very very special snowflake - something you should never strive for with a character. Sensei and Rutile both seem to be out of character, as both seem to feed Sapphire what she wants with a silver spoon... She seems like a bratty chosen one and I can’t say this backstory will sit well with everyone.
There’s so little here that it makes me question a lot, and it frustrates me that’s there isn’t more to justify the choices and thoughts of Sensei and Rutile. Why did Sensei see such potential in Sapphire? Why would Rutile craft wings for Sapphire? Why did Sapphire get away with working alone?
There’s just so much left unanswered and unexplained... Please, if you ever decide to work on this, please add more and fill in these enormous holes. Adding a timeline would help with the pacing because when all of this is happening and at what ages Sapphire was when these events happened isn’t specified, adding to the confusion.
Fun Fact
Sapphire has never gotten broken before but she is curious about what it feels like.
Sapphire wraps herself in her wings when she sleeps.
Haha that first piece of trivia is rather cute. It reminds me of being young, seeing a friend with a cast and wondering what it feels like to break an arm or a leg. I think that’s really cute! The second - well, you already know my stance on the wings ^^’
Notes + Summary
If there is one thing that always sucks about fandom OCs, it’s that the fandoms always impose restrictions on creativity. In the case of Sapphire, I feel that a lot of the creative choices would definitely work to her benefit, but in the world of Houseki No Kuni, several aspects of her character feel unnatural and vague.
Anyways, here’s a reiteration of my main points from this review.
Please add more to this bio! There wasn’t a whole lot of information in this bio, certainly not enough for Sapphire to be considered a fleshed out OC. As a result of how short this bio is, there are a lot of holes and a lot left unexplained. There is a lot of potential for this OC to be bettered by filling in those holes wisely! You can look online for a template to find section headings you’re missing, like: relationships, statistics, etc.
Getting your own images would be pretty great! Artists are always better than doll maker games!
Altering her name just a little by a colour prefix (eg. “Cornflower Sapphire”, “Kashmir Sapphire”, etc.) would differentiate her from the canon blue Sapphire.
The removal or better explaining of the facial markings and wings would definitely be beneficial if you want to make her fit better into the series.
Sapphire is written like a special snowflake, she’s practically written like a protagonist and seems to directly challenge Phos. Perhaps tone down the amount of special features she has, there’s nothing wrong with being just average. Sometimes, looking and behaving like a wallflower can make an OC better?
Explaining Sapphire’s connections with her peers in greater detail would be beneficial, considering they seem to baby her a fair bit.
Overall, I’d give Sapphire an overall rating of 3.5/10. There just wasn’t a whole lot to work off of from this bio and what’s there is admittedly not superb. I hope this doesn’t discourage you from creating OCs and encourages you to make some changes to Sapphire. As I said, I see a lot of potential in her, as long as you fill in those holes in her bio and correct what is flawed in a way that makes sense and seems natural.
That’s all for this review, Ciao!

karenlimabr replied to your post “What do you the changes would be if Houseki no kuni had a Christian...”
well that's just my opinion The Christian faith you described is more geared toward Catholicism. The Christian faith I believe in is Spiritism, described by Allan Kardec in his books. According to my faith we reincarnate and according to our mistakes and learn, we evolve, even if it takes a long time. if we insist on the same mistakes and do not try to improve ourselves, we get stuck in the same cycle repeating the same things until we solve for an end in this loop. Well there's a lot more things to talk about, what I've just said was pretty abriged
ty for the addition. I could only write a summary of the narratives of the main Christian branches cause Christianity is huge. Also there are so many different faiths and my knowledge of religion is quite limited, some of my personal biases must have escaped. But thank you sm for your reply and for describing your faith, I didn’t know about Spiritism
