Goodreads Choice Awards but the nominees are just the books I've personally shelved
I have a lot of thoughts about the options as they exist (mostly not that bad, except when it comes to the total elimination of children's literature, about which I am furious), but per usual I can't really articulate them in a coherent way SO I sorted my shelves by publication date, ignored the GCA requirement of a minimum 3.5 average rating, and am doing this instead.
[update: oops this did not turn out coherent either. but it got typed!]
Important Reminder: These are not all books I consider equal contenders for "best." I simply wanted to highlight every possible option I actually knew about and have read or am interested in reading.
YA
After the Sirens - Sharon Farrell
Begin Again - Emma Lord (forgot to add this one before)
The Brothers Hawthorne - Jennifer Lynn Barnes (actual nominee and I'm gonna vote for it even though it seems like it may be more of a filler book. The Davenports is the only other official nom to intrigue me, and its lower average rating + hideous cartoon cover isn't enough to flip me unread so sorry, we're going Basic Popularity Contest Pick)
Cleaning Up - Leanne Lieberman
Five Survive - Holly Jackson (definitely not a winner)
Gather - Kenneth M. Cadow (edit: National Book Award finalist?? like with the adult fiction??)
Good as Gold -- Candace Buford (definite contender for fave so far)
Holly Horror - Michelle Jabès Corpora
The Island - Natasha Preston (lol. lmao even. but ridiculous fun)
The Lake House - Sarah Beth Durst
A Long Stretch of Bad Days - Mindy McGinnis
The Renaissance of Gwen Hathaway - Ashley Schumacher (here on author loyalty only)
Three Rivers - Sarah Stusek (THAT'S RIGHT. HER.)
Summer Rental - Rektok Ross (why am I this aware of brand-new ya horror??) (because I love horror and it's usually better paced and spookier and less shock-gory than the adult brand? fair)
YA FANTASY / SCI FI
Dream to Me - Megan Paasch (I think it would go here, anyway. but maybe it's just regular YA)
The Eternal Ones - Namina Forna (I gotta remember this series exists)
FANTASY
Emily Wilde's Encyclopedia of Faeries -- winner winner pick!! (no like officially)
Starling House - Alix E. Harrow (though this is a close second, and honestly, if they weren't both actual nominees I'd think The Unmaking of June Farrow has some potential intrigue)
ROMANCE
Hazel Fine Sings Along - Katie Wicks (no comment on its Wattpad origin. I didn't notice until just now. have not read it.)
Famous For A Living - Melissa Ferguson (popular enough for Once Upon a Book Club! but not for for an official nom, despite my hopes, in this fiercely competitive category. boooo)
Out On a Limb - Hannah Bonam-Young (damn I actually saw this one making rounds on BookTube, thought it might be here)
Something Wild & Wonderful - Anita Kelly (can't believe there's actually a queer romance I want to see show up and it doesn't)
(Bonus: legit nominees I am considering for validity include Happy Place; Yours Truly - I really need to figure out if Emily Henry and Abby Jimenez are in my wheelhouse or not - and Hello Stranger, though as much as I like Katherine Center this one does not call to me)
FICTION
This Bird Has Flown - Susanna Hoffs (might also have been under romance if picked for the actual GCA? feels more mainstream than that but idk. anyway HATERS 2 THE LEFT.)
^ also my pick for debut
The Lost Manuscript - Mollie Rushmeyer (dunno which category this would officially go in either. probably romance? maybe mystery? but it's got a lot more plot than the average romance)
HISTORICAL FICTION
The Echo of Old Books - Barbara Davis (holy crap this one's actually in the nominations?! Instant vote. Almost disappointing because there are some other candidates I would have felt fine voting for to block the worse ones, but this is the only one on my acute TBR. If I don't give at least 4 stars I will be shocked)
MYSTERY/THRILLER
Forgotten Trail - Claire Kells
The Hike - Lucy Clarke
The Only One Left - Riley Sager
Homecoming - Kate Morton (crisis alert! the latter two are both official nominees and I am equally interested in both/both have equally good track records with me) (probs. gonna vote Kate on the principle of female solidarity. even though this is really stretching the definition of "mystery")
HORROR
A Haunting on the Hill - Elizabeth Hand
(How To Sell a Haunted House is a hard maybe but also the only one I think I'd even consider trying from the official noms)
MEMOIR
Paris: The Memoir - Paris Hilton
The Woman in Me - Britney Spears
Grimoire Girl - Hilarie Burton Morgan
Tell Me Everything - Minka Kelly
If You Would Have Told Me - John Stamos
Goodbye to Clocks Ticking - Joseph Monninger (forgot I just stumbled upon this one recently! it's on my library list but not my GR account)
and one more except GCA put it in a different category hang on
Three of these - not Burton's, alas - are actually nominees. Britney is gonna win but not without a fight from me. Do I go with Paris, whose memoir impressed me even though I still don't care much for her as a person, or Minka, whose memoir I haven't read but whose reviews sound excellent and whom I like more?
HUMOR
Being Henry - Henry Winkler (there is absolutely no reason for this not to be nominated in memoir btw. I hope it wins Humor because nothing else appeals in that category and I have multiple vendettas (SAMANTHA IRBY), but it would be as misplaced a win as the Office Ladies book was last year. fully deserving of an award! actually the best of the given nominees! but also like an adult beating a bunch of children in a footrace.)
MIDDLE GRADE
(no longer a GCA category but it fudgin' should be)
Just Gus - McCall Hoyle
Falling Out of Time - Margaret Peterson Haddix (actually glad I don't have to choose between these two because like. dogs - but also boy MC - or author loyalty ft. sequel to my childhood fave??)
Rosie Frost and the Falcon Queen - Geri Halliwell The Spice Girl (no. 😔) (and yet it is still on my shelf)
I have no strong opinions for any categories I skipped.

Exploring Real Estate Opportunities in Central Florida
Why Central Florida
real estate central florida's appeal is multifaceted. The region's robust economy is driven by a mix of tourism, technology, and healthcare, providing a stable foundation for property investment. The presence of world-renowned attractions such as Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, and SeaWorld makes it a top destination for tourists, which in turn fuels the demand for short-term rental properties.
Moreover, the area is home to numerous prestigious schools, making it an attractive location for families. The combination of excellent educational institutions and a lower cost of living compared to other major metropolitan areas further enhances its appeal.
Residential Real Estate

Investors are drawn to Central Florida for its lucrative rental market. The constant influx of tourists creates a high demand for vacation rentals, particularly in areas close to major attractions. Properties in locations like Kissimmee and Davenport are especially sought after for short-term rentals.
Long-term rental properties also present significant opportunities. With a steady population growth fueled by both domestic and international migration, the demand for rental housing remains strong. Cities like Orlando are experiencing a surge in new apartment developments aimed at accommodating this growing population.
Commercial Real Estate
The commercial real estate central fl sector in Central Florida is equally vibrant. The region's economic diversity supports a wide range of commercial properties, from retail and office spaces to industrial facilities. Orlando, as the economic hub, sees continuous growth in its commercial sector, driven by the influx of new businesses and the expansion of existing ones.
Future Prospects

Ongoing infrastructure projects, such as the expansion of Interstate 4 and the development of new residential and commercial zones, are set to further boost the region's appeal. How the Short-Term Real Estate Market Is Affecting the Florida Market
Short-term rentals diversify the housing market. They give travelers a budget-friendly alternative to hotels and allow homeowners to earn passive income by hosting vacationers. However, these properties can negatively affect real estate markets — particularly a hot one like Florida — over the long term.
The Airbnb State
Airbnb has disrupted the hospitality and real estate industries nationwide. This short-term homestay platform usually has a presence in almost every state, but its listings are primarily in the biggest cities. The Land of Flowers is an exception to this rule.
Florida is one of the few states with significant quantities of Airbnb rentals in multiple towns. Most Floridian Airbnb hosts are in Miami, Tampa, Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, Kissimmee, Saint Petersburg and Davenport.
Regarding density, Broward County has 9.1 listings per 1,000 inhabitants. It’s less than half as densely Airbnb-hosted as Hawaii. Still, it’s impressive because the county is the second-most populous in Florida — the country’s fastest-growing state and third-largest demographically.
Transient rental is a huge business in the Sunshine State because it’s America’s top tourist destination. In 2022, a historic 137.6 million vacationers visited the Citrus Capital.
Airbnb already has a massive footprint in the Sunshine State and is on track to expand further in South Florida. Many developers are building hotels masquerading as condominiums with hundreds of doors licensed as short-term rentals.
More similar commercial real estate projects are likely to get underway because the demand for short-term rentals in the peninsula remains strong. The units sell like hotcakes while the wait list of interested buyers continues to grow longer.
Why Do Cities Not Like Short-Term Rentals?
Some cities dislike short-term rentals for various reasons. Many homestay hosts evade taxes and take business away from tax-paying establishments. However, Airbnb has begun deducting taxes from host incomes and remitting them to the authorities in specific jurisdictions.
Critics say Airbnb rentals aren’t subject to health and safety codes like traditional lodging businesses. That’s why some property developers catering to aspiring Airbnb hosts put a premium on hygiene to win over hotel customers.
Many neighbors of Airbnb hosts in multi-family dwellings complain about disrespectful guests. Some transient occupants can be noisy and bother residents.
Year-round residents of touristy locations who don’t own a home — and have no means to do a cross-country move — are the biggest haters of Airbnb because they feel the pinch. Many landlords in these places find homestays more lucrative, compelling them to target transient occupants instead of renting to long-term tenants. The advent of Airbnbs in tourist destinations with low housing inventory creates a chain of adverse events for people who desire to reside there over the long haul.
The non-owner-occupied landlords too eager to make bank off the Everglade State’s scorching tourism sector convert their long-term rentals into short-term accommodations. This decision reduces the number of local properties for rent. Less housing supply drives up the rent.
This situation also makes home buying more challenging. Absentee homeowners have less incentive to sell an income-generating property, leaving homebuyers to fight over fewer houses for sale. Although building costs can jump by 2%, a new construction project can appear more enticing when buying an existing home means bidding higher than you should.
Is Florida Banning Short-Term Rentals?
No, Florida isn’t banning short-term rentals. On the contrary, the legislature places obstacles to prevent curbing short-term rentals.
In 2011, state lawmakers passed a bill barring local governments from using zoning to disallow vacation rentals. Due to public backlash, the legislators revised the law three years later, reempowering communities to regulate such properties as long as they don’t restrict their duration or frequency, or ban them altogether.
Effects of Short-Term Rentals on the Florida Real Estate Market
Short-term rentals contribute to higher rents and home prices in the Gulf State.
Rising Rents
The growth of home sharing in Florida has aggravated its rental crisis. The state has a dim view of rent control. Governor Ron DeSantis has given landlords the green light to charge a monthly nonrefundable fee instead of a security deposit. When you add short-term vacation rentals into the picture, the shortage of available units for year-round tenants becomes even more pronounced.
The Waller, Weeks, and Johnson Rental Index offers insight. As of November 19, 2023, Miami ranked 7th in the top most overpriced markets in the United States. The average rent in the city was $2,768.53 when it should be $2,572.02, translating to a premium of 7.64% and an increase of 2.88% year over year. You need to make at least $110,741.08 a year to avoid spending more than 30% of your annual income on rent in the 305.
Eight other Floridian metros made it to the top 80. In order based on rental premiums paid ranging from 6.15% to 1.96%, they were Cape Coral, North Port, Tampa, Deltona, Orlando, Lakeland, Palm Bay and Jacksonville. In an environment where property owners can rent out to anyone and jack up prices as they see fit, the market typically would correct itself and punish overly greedy landlords with vacancies. This notion is true to some extent.
One study revealed Airbnb hosts in college towns saw 36% fewer bookings when raising rents by 20% or more during weekends when rival teams visit. This phenomenon resulted in 78% lower rental income.
Affiliation bias played a role in this noticeable drop in occupancy, but greed and animosity toward rival fan bases did, too. The wealthier the landlords, the more they’re unlikely to shape up.
Soaring Home Prices
Airbnb inflates home prices higher than rents in zip codes with fewer owner-occupied properties. Florida attracts snowbirds, so it’s home to many absentee homeowners who regularly live elsewhere for a significant portion of the year. Whether they host transient vacationers or not, they don’t intend to sell their secondary residences and indirectly keep the housing supply low.
Research shows house prices rise by 0.026% for every 1% increase in Airbnb listings within the zip code. The “Airbnb effect” accounts for 1/7 of the overall property price growth, so it’s one of the forces making home ownership out of reach for many.
Will Short-Term Vacation Rentals Be Profitable in the Future?
Florida will remain a fertile ground for home sharing as long as two conditions persist — it continues to magnetize countless visitors and its lawmakers maintain friendly policies for vacation rentals. The first domino will fall when at least one of the two is missing. Landlords may get fewer reservations or face more restrictions on how they operate. Either way, rents and home prices decrease when transient rentals bring in less return.

Everything will be done by Cheryl. Cheryl will gather the money packets. Only she will touch the money. Cheryl will make the drop. If she is wired or if you use a look-a-like, Patricia dies. Cheryl will get in her car. No one is to be in the car with her, no one is to follow her no air surveillance, and no car surveillance of any kind will be tolerated. I will give directions over a cell phone as Cheryl drives. She must make the drop at exactly 3:00 A.M. She will follow each instruction to the letter.”
The unsub’s message was clear, and Cheryl did just that. She packed the money into one duffel bag, making sure to fill it to the brim with every single stack. Just for good measure, Derek and Hotch were going with her to make sure that everything was in place. The unsub might not do what he says or there could be more than one person so it was smart to take the two agents.
Spencer was hooking the computer up to the GPS in Cheryl’s car so he could track it wherever it went, even if she got lost or the unsub hijacks her in any way shape or form. No matter what happens, Cheryl will be covered in every way there is. As soon as the trio left, you called Derek on his phone just to keep in contact with your teammates.
“Cheryl's car has GPS. We'll be able to track her,” Spencer said as you leaned over his shoulder to look at the computer screen. The phone was close to his mouth so Derek heard every word he said.
“The first thing he's gonna do is have her switch cars. Where are we headed?”
“Where are they headed, Spence?” you asked.
“Let's see,” he muttered, typing on the computer until the map popped up. “An address which appears to be a rental car lot.”
“Keep an eye out and be careful please,” you told Derek right before hanging up. Sighing, you fell into the seat next to Spencer and looked at him with careful eyes.
“What?”
“Nothing, just trying to figure you out,” you muttered to yourself, but he heard you loud and clear. All you could do at this point is wait, but you couldn’t help but notice something odd. Evan’s security team was inside the house, but there was one person who keeps missing all of the action.
“What’s wrong?” the doctor asked, noticing the look on your face.
“Isn’t is kind of weird that Vincent is missing all of this? He seems to disappear right when the calls or something important is happening.”
“You’re right. Where is he?”
“That’s what we have to figure out.”
Tumblr media
Just like you predicted, the drop didn’t go as planned. Instead of it being about the money, it was set up as a second kidnapping. Cheryl was almost taken from the car lot if it hadn't been for Derek and Hotch there. The unsub got away, and the first thing they did was bring Cheryl back to her house where she was safe. When her father heard about this, he visibly and emotionally freaked out until he could see her for himself.
“Cheryl’s alright,” Derek assured when the trio returned. Evan immediately went to his daughter who held the duffel bag of cash in his hand. It was never about the money. The phone started ringing and you knew who it was and what they had to say. Everyone headed over to the machine, and you made sure the room was silent before pressing the button.
“That was fun, wasn't it? A little running around and getting our pulses racing. Are you there, Cheryl? Are you there?! Tell me you didn't feel a slight tingle, a thrill run up your spine. Huh? But those clever and cunning FBI agents deduced my little plan just in time. They figured it out. If they hadn't, I would have had you both. The whole set. The matching pair,” the unsub laughed. Looking over at Spencer, you noticed he typed ‘collector’ since he was trying to take notes on the unsub the more he revealed about himself.
“Why are you doing this?” Cheryl blurted out.
“Because you asked me to, Cheryl. You asked me with your glances. The way you talk. Those little gestures.”
Reaching over, you pressed the mute button which only confused the young girl.
“What are you doing?”
“Do not answer this man.”
“You asked for this! You asked for it, Cheryl!” the unsub yelled. She jerked away from you and pressed the button to speak. Derek reached out for her, but she managed to evade his capture at the last minute.
“Cheryl!” Derek hissed, but covered his mouth when the call was unmuted.
“What do you want?” she screamed.
“What do I want?! You! It may not be today, it may not be tomorrow but I promise you, we will be together!” he yelled back and hung up. Sighing, you scratched the back of your neck and looked at Gideon for further guidance.
“We can not let Cheryl speak with him any further.”
“Why not?”
“It's only feeding his psychosis to allow your interaction,” Spencer answered. “Was Trish involved in any serious relationships prior to the kidnapping?”
“With the boy that was killed. They were together for 2 years,” Evan answered.
“Trish didn't want me to tell you. They were getting engaged,” Cheryl sighed.
“Well, that certainly could have been the unsub's stressor,” you pointed out.
“What does that mean?” Evan asked, but nobody answered him. “Will someone please tell me what we're dealing with here?”
“De Clerambault's syndrome, otherwise known as erotomania which is the belief that someone, usually of a higher social status but not necessarily a celebrity, is in love with you. Erotomanics believe that the objects of their affection are subtly professing their love for them through looks, gestures, and glances. The unsub truly and full-heartedly believes that Cheryl and Trish are in love with him. They don't tell him this with their voices. No, with gestures and looks. He's obsessed with them.”
“What does this mean?”
“He’s the most determined kind of criminal,” you stated. “Which is the most dangerous since there isn’t anything that they won’t do.”
“Crime of obsession. Your specialty, your lead, Morgan,” Hotch said from the other side of the room. Leaving the group you were with, you approached the other one to voice your opinion on what should be done.
“I think we should recheck everyone on Davenport's staff against the profile of a stalker,” Derek said once you got there.
“No need. Just do one: Vincent. I don’t like him,” you shrugged.
“That may be, but we need to be open minded here,” Hotch dismissed.
“Aren't stalking behaviors pretty diverse?” Elle asked.
“There's overlap. Narcissistic, inflated sense of self-worth, and history of bad relationships.”
“What do we know so far?”
“He's probably white, and obviously male sophisticated speech patterns.”
“Sophisticated, yet bizarre. He rarely uses contractions. It's not ‘you're’, it's ‘you are’. He’s pretentious,” Gideon added in his two cents. “He wants to sound smarter than he actually is. Whatever position of authority or level of success this guy has, he had to struggle for it.”
“We also have to face the possibility at this point that Trish may already be dead,” Hotch whispered so that Evan couldn’t hear him.
“I don’t feel it, though. She’s close, and I can feel her fear, Hotch. She’s not dead… not yet.”
“You know, so far he's called every play. I say we apply some pressure, make him sweat,” Derek suggested.
“Well, there's only one way to do that,” Gideon smiled. As if on cue the phone started ringing, and everyone gathered around it. Gideon was the one who was in charge here, and he let it ring, and ring, and ring, and ring. Evan was getting impatient and went to answer it, but Gideon interjected him.
“Hold on, hold on, hold on,” Gideon muttered, answering the call but hanging up right away.
“What are you doing?” Evan asked. The phone rang again, and you could sense the anger coming from the unsub through the phone. When the older agent didn’t answer, he tried again. “Agent Gideon.”
“Hello?” Gideon asked once he answered the call.
“Tell me there was a technical issue with the line because if you actually just hung up on m--”
“What the hell are you doing?” Evan screeched. Gideon hung up while the unsub was talking which would surely get him angry enough to reveal something important about himself.
“Are you gonna answer it?” Cheryl asked.
“Why is he doing this? What is he--what--you're gonna drive this guy crazy!”
“Just, quiet. Please, quiet,” Gideon whispered.
“Cheryl, he knows what he's doing,” Elle tried assuring her. The phone started ringing again, but Gideon made no move to answer it.
“Somebody has to answer it!” Cheryl shouted.
“Just answer the phone, for god's sake!” Evan yelled, reaching for the phone. Gideon was on him in seconds because it was important that he doesn’t touch the phone.
“Don't touch it!”
“He knows what he's doing!” Derek held Evan back from touching it.
“Davenport residence,” Gideon finally answered.
“Are you out of your mind? You do realize, you do understand, that I'll kill her?! Do you--”
“You're killing my daughter!” Evan cried. He didn’t understand what was going on, and you were kind of overwhelmed by the amount of emotions that were in the room. The phone started ringing once more, and Evan almost lost it. “Pick up that phone!”
“Get him quiet. Mr. Davenport, get a hold of yourself.”
“Answer the phone!”
“Quiet him!”
“Evan! Stop! Trish isn’t dead! Please, let us do our jobs!” you stated, putting yourself between Gideon and Evan. He could only whimper at this point, and Cheryl was a silent mess all on her own. However, she had Elle there to lean on in case she needed to. Gideon finally answered the phone, but the unsub was the one to speak first.
“She is dead! You hang up on me again, and I rip her open!”
“I'm sorry. You must have the wrong number,” Gideon chuckled, hanging up once more. Evan was a crying mess, but Derek helped him try to stay on his two feet.
“Come on, Gideon,” Derek sighed.
“You killed her.”
“No, he isn’t.”
“Oh, yeah? Then what--what the hell does he think he’s doing?” Evan directed his question at you.
“I'm saving your daughter, Mr. Davenport. Have a little faith,” Gideon answered. The phone rang for the last time, and Gideon gladly answered it.
“Put Cheryl on the phone.”
“No, you're finished talking to Cheryl.”
“Listen to that tone of authority. Just like your published work, agent Gideon. Fascinating to hear the same arrogant quality in your own voice. You are a bit of a pedant, Jason, a bit didactic.”
“Well, that's a very interesting conclusion. You sound intelligent, and you certainly sound educated, but we both know that's not true.”
“Oh, I know all about all of you. The ambitious agent Hotchner? Do you wanna be director of the FBI someday, agent Hotchner? Would you step on Jason Gideon to get there? I think you would. Posttraumatic stress is a very good excuse. Even your sick, pregnant wife can't get you to leave your post.
“Jason Gideon, an expert in the criminal psyche yet unable to diagnose the autistic leanings of the very insecure Dr. Reid. Well, maybe he can make money counting cards in Las Vegas. The lovely Elle was promoted too soon. She doesn't have what it takes to make it in the B.A.U. Boys club. Let’s not forget Y/N and that gift she calls psychic when we all know it’s pure shit! She is overcompensating for something truly terrible, isn’t that right? You're no threat to me, you're no threat to anyone!
“And Token Derek Morgan wants to be taken seriously, but he is just a pumped-up side of beef. I know who you are, I know how you think and I know what to do next! Do you?” the unsub finally finished, slamming the receiver down. Everyone was in shock that he knew this much about you which could only mean one thing…
He was one of you, and you were right.

I pegged it as some combination of The Hotelier and Joyce Manor and other things of that ilk. It was similar to that — but so much more. This was part of the soundtrack from when I drove from Philadelphia to Baltimore to Pittsburgh to Indianapolis and back for the NFL combine. Good road trip. Top track: “Distant Star”
21. Girlpool — What Chaos Is Imaginary 20. Drawing Boards — The Message
19. Big Thief — Two Hands I sat in a coffee shop in my new neighborhood earlier this month and ran through Two Hands, which I kind of forgot about (whoops) after U.F.O.F. “Not” came on, the waning sunlight was reflecting off Eastern State Penitentiary and I could see the reflection of the dying sunset in the clouds to the east down Fairmount. It was A Moment, you could say. Top track: “Not”
18. Mark Ronson — Late Night Feelings The most misguided driving venture I’ve ever had is driving from Denver, Colo., to Davenport, Iowa, during my return from California in 2014. That drive took 13 or 14 hours, and I started it way too late in the morning and there was a time change built in. I was alone. It was a little much. But driving from Green Bay, Wisc., to Milwaukee, Wisc., after the Eagles played the Packers in September ranks up there, though it was more inconvienent than misguided. I left Lambeau Field at 1:30 a.m. and had to be at the airport in Milwaukee by 4 to return my rental car and make my plane home. It was a lot. It was all worth it. Top track: “See U Again (feat. Camila Cabello)”
17. Emily Yacine — Remember The Silver 16. Caroline Polacheck — Pang
15. Charli XCX — Charli I remember listening the Charli XCX in 2012 — ”Valentine” that February was my first exposure, then the You’re The One EP solidified her for me (s/o to the Balam Acab and Blood Orange remixes) — and being like, yeah, this is great. The highs of Charli validated that. The best songs on here are some of the best pop songs of the year. But there’s a lot that I skip, and that prevents it from being up higher. I made a playlist that has only the songs I really, really liked from Charli (because all of them are pretty good), and it turns out that those are the songs that are either solo or have the least intrusive features. It colored my perception of this album a ton It’s an interesting formula in 2019. But Charli rules. Top track: “Silver Cross”/”Official”
14. Barrie — Happy To Be Here 13. Nilüfer Yanya — Miss Universe 12. No Rome — Crying In The Prettiest Places 11. Clairo — Immunity
10. Frass Green — For You 9. Big Thief — U.F.O.F. 8. Mannequin Pussy — Patience 7. Kevin Morby — Oh My God
6. Mike Krol — Power Chords The second Saturday in March was the first real taste of spring, so I went up to the roof to sit and stare at the skyline while listening to Power Chords. It was the perfect marriage. Top track: “Pink and Blue”
5. Carly Rae Jepsen — Dedicated 4. Purple Mountains — Purple Mountains 3. (Sandy) Alex G — House of Sugar 2. Oso Oso — Basking In The Glow
1. Toro y Moi — Outer Peace We left Denver and headed west up into the hills toward Red Rocks, and Ian put on Outer Peace. It worked. As a chillwave defender for life, I miss the Causers of This vibe, but Outer Peace falls into the same lineage as Boo Boo a couple years ago. It’s rather minimal, and it’s contempative. The themes are large, and there’s a good Ariel Pink callback to the beginning of the decade: “It’s always the same, as always.” It worked in a Colorado summer, in a swampy Philadelphia September and a the cold tease of winter. Top track: “Fading”

Waking Up in Vegas--Ch. 25
Tumblr media
Chapter 25: The Way You Look at Me
Dean, 10:15 PM, Evening
“How about, after all of this is over tonight, we go back to the hotel, take a hot shower together, and eat junk food?” I said soothingly, sliding my fingers along the soft skin on the inside of her wrist. Her pulse beat wildly, a strange sort of music that made my blood sing.
Mera glanced up at me with those amber eyes of hers, the ones that could drag me down into an unfathomable abyss. One that I never wanted to leave. It was the glance that drew me in the first moment we met, they shade and hue that kept me in thrall in a way that I could never understand. She reached up and tugged on the end of her ponytail.
“That sounds really nice,” she replied, leaning her head against my shoulder. Her fingers settled into place with mine, holding my hand tightly. “If you promise that we can leave first thing in the morning. I don’t want to stay here any longer than I have to.”
I had known, ever since we drove into Davenport the night before, that she was nearly destroyed with anxiety by being anywhere nearby. She was terrified by the thought of running in to Seth’s family or any of their old friends. I could feel it, her sheer and absolute horror—it blurred in my veins, changed the way the air cycled through my lungs. It was an ache in my bones, an ache that I knew had to be a thousand times worse within her.
“Then let’s drop off the rental car and just fly home. Nobody needs us until Friday anyway.”
She glanced up, tears glittering on her lashes like diamonds. That beast in my chest reared up, roaring in desperation to protect her, to stop the pain and hurt that had somehow gotten past me to her. I brushed my thumb beneath her eyes, wiping away the tears gathered there. My heart thudded angrily, sadly, desperately. All I wanted was to take her away from everything that hurt her. If I could, I would carry her away to a place for just the two of us… where we could be together in peace without her past chasing her like ghosts.
“Every time I think I’ve figured you out, you surprise me, Dean Ambrose,” she murmured, a half smile on her face.
It was enough to lift my soul. To bring it into a place of something like peace and joy.
Mera, 10:20 PM, Evening
Just looking at his cornflower eyes made me feel as if the world could find itself right again. He had this way about him, this sense that permeated everything around him until there was nothing left but peace. It was one of the many things I loved about him. No matter what happened, I could find the center of the world in the circle of his arms.
“What do you mean by that, Mera?” he said, his lips curling up in a smile that still made my heart want to burst.
I looked up at him, wondering if the day would come when the sight of him didn’t take my breath away. “You are the kindest, sweetest, most wonderful man I’ve ever met. And I’m so lucky to be your wife.”
Those blue eyes blurred as he blinked rapidly, trying to hide the fact that he was tearing up. “I’ve been lucky since the day I met you.”
Leaning up, I pressed a kiss against his lips. “I love you, Dean.”
 Seth, 10:22 PM, Evening
I was just standing in the hallway. Not moving, not talking, hardly breathing. Mera and Dean were right here, sitting on those road crates talking and touching. All I could think about was how they sat close together, her head on his shoulder, a smile on her face that I hadn’t seen in years.
Something inside me… something deep in my chest… it pulled, tugged, ripped so painfully it sucked the air out of my lungs. I stumbled back into the wall, a physical ache running through my entire body.
A lifetime flashed in my mind. The seconds and moments and hours, days, months, years… decades. The first time I saw Mera Reynolds—golden hair in braids with a Ninja Turtles lunch box standing by the cubbies in the back of our kindergarten classroom. Middle school—ponytails and a boyband t-shirt, magazine cutouts in her locker beneath a picture of us in the snow. Somewhere around ninth grade, looking over from my trampoline-turned-ring and seeing her sitting on the steps of my mom’s house with the camera in her hand. Junior year—Mera coming down the stairs at her parents’ house in a dark blue dress that made her hair look like burnished bronze. Senior year, signing day, when she turned down everything at her dream school to take an AT track and travel with me.
That first night on the road, getting lost trying to find the next town. She had her feet up on the dash of my beat-up second-hand car, music crackling through the speakers as she sang along. The motel on the side of the highway, splitting a meal from McDonald’s since that’s all we could afford.
The way she used to fuss when I got hurt. How she’d sift through her textbooks to find what needed to be done. Calling her teachers if she couldn’t find it. The times we couldn’t avoid it and ended up at the emergency room.
Every moment of our lives together raced through my brain. One after the other, marching toward the inevitable, inescapable finish. Faces blurred together, all sharing one defining characteristic—they weren’t Mera Reynolds.
I felt my bones breaking in my chest. My stomach turned.
I barely made it to the bathroom before I puked.
 Mera, 10:30 PM, Evening
“Good luck tonight,” I murmured as Dean enfolded me in a warm hug. The scent of him wrapped around me, reminding me that I was finally in my only real home. No city, no family, could make me feel as calm and as happy as being with Dean.
“Honestly,” Dean replied, burying his nose in my hair. “I’m ready to drop these titles. I’m ready to do my own thing.”
I slipped my arms around his middle. “Whatever happens, whatever you do, I’m here. I’m behind you for every second of it.”
Dean’s lips settled on my temple. “I’m counting on it, darlin’. Because I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
With a final squeeze, I looked up at him and smiled widely. “Go on. Do what you do. I know it will be great.”
 Dean, 10:38 PM, Evening
I stood in gorilla, my thoughts still in the back with Mera. As calm as she had been when we’d parted, I knew that she was ready to get this town in the rearview. It didn’t matter to me. But knowing that she was unhappy was enough to make gasoline burn in my veins. I’d go to the ends of the earth to make her happy.
Seth appeared next to me, his face looking grey. As much as I knew what he’d done, I couldn’t deny the fact that he had been one of my closest friends for a long time. “You good, man? You look a little green.”
I watched him swallow hard. There was a sheen of sweat on his forehead. The muscles of his jaw bunched tight. “Are you gonna vomit?”
He looked over at me, something off about the way his eyes focused. “Already did.”
“Shit, man. Are you okay to go through with this?”
“No choice,” he replied heavily. “I’m not backing out on my hometown.”
Seth sounded strange, something haunted in his tone. I reached over, put my hand on his shoulder. I felt him flinch.
 Mera, 10:40 PM, Evening
I slipped around to the monitors so I could watch the match. Everyone who needed me had already been taken care of and long since left the arena. I had the time to myself as I waited for Dean’s match to be over. Watching it would make the time go by faster.
“Hello, Mera,” came a voice from just over my left shoulder. I turned around to see a woman whose face I hadn’t seen in years. Holly Franklin—Seth’s mom—stood there in a dark sweater and jeans. She stepped up close to me, like she wanted to hug me.
I tried to smile, but knew it wasn’t as genuine as she deserved. “Hello, Holly,” I replied, feeling the formality in my mouth.
She looked down at her feet, smiled her soft mother smile. It made me feel guilty for feeling off around her.
“I miss talking to you, girlie,” she said faintly. A heavy sigh settled between us. “You were like my daughter for so long, Mera. I swear I could beat that boy for doing what he did.”
I tried so hard not to think about it. To not let everything that Seth had done to me creep in at the edges of my senses. If it did, I would fall apart. I would sink beneath the edges of the past in a way that I couldn’t escape.
As if she could sense the rise in my pulse, the terror that seemed to burn in my veins, Holly stepped away. “I know my son isn’t always a good man. I know that he hurt you in a way that can never be forgotten. And, honey, know that I don’t expect you to patch anything up with him. He made this bed and he’s going to wallow in it. But I’ve watched you grow up. You were like one of my own. If you ever need anything, don’t you hesitate to pick up that phone and call me, do you understand?”
Something soothing wriggled in beneath the anxiety. I felt the corner of my mouth twitch up. “Yes, ma’am.”
Holly nodded as if all of it was settled. “And congratulations, sweetheart. Dean’s a good man. He’ll be a better one to you than my boy was. And I’m glad for that.”

Route Review: NPOV Lion’s Club Rail Riders - Washington
Tumblr media
The North Pend Oreille (”pon-der-ay”) Valley (NPOV) Lion’s Club Rail Riders commenced their second season of railbiking on the tracks of the Pend Oreille Valley Railroad on the weekend of June 15th and 16th, 2019. Running six full weekends through the season, this all-volunteer run service organization dedicates itself to betterment of the community of Ione and the “Forgotten Corner” of northeast Washington.. I pedalled the route though the valley from Ione on June 15th, 2019.
Vitals
Phone: 844 RAIL RIDE (844-724-5743)
Website: https://lionsrailriders.com/
Check-in Address: 101 Railroad Ave, Ione, WA 99139
The Site
Check-in is at the station in the small village Ione, which formerly served the NPOV Lion’s Club excursion train (and across a parking lot from a bar and grille).
Tumblr media
While the history of the line is summarized below, I’ll also share this direct quote from the NPOV Lions Club, describing the contributions they’ve made to the region over the years.
In 1981, NPOV Lions Club started a train ride...with a single flat car, wooden benches with chicken wire fencing...that carried 60 passengers along the scenic Pend Oreille River from Ione to Metaline Falls. The success of the ride over the years had increased to 7 train cars (including a caboose!) and ridership to over 10,000 guests each season. From humble beginnings, North Pend Oreille Valley Lions Excursion Train Ride rolled to a stop after 35 years of providing family fun on October 23, 2016.
This created a new challenge for NPOV Lions Club.  Funds raised from the train ride supported local, regional, and international projects. Nothing could replace the train but NPOV Lions now have a new, exciting, family fun event…RAIL RIDERS!
The Route
The initial route is a 6-mile (9.7 km) round trip from the Ione station along the river to the turnaround at the trestle overlooking the magnificent Box Canyon Hydroelectric Dam. Upon return to the station, riders are offered an additional 3-mile (4.8 km) round trip through farmlands and forest south of Ione.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The line was originally constructed from 1909 to 1911 as the Idaho and Washington Northern (I&WN) to carry lumber and cement from the valley to larger, mainline markets. I cannot readily find evidence of passenger service, although it is easy to imagine that locals used the freight services as connections to mainline passenger services. Through various financial transactions, operation of the line was taken over by the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad before being sold to the Milwaukee Road, who ran the line from 1916 until bankruptcy in 1979. This was followed by the public creation of the Port of Pend Oreille, which took over maintenance and operation of the newly named Pend Oreille Valley Railroad (POVA).
While the new venture initially served cement, newsprint and lumber operations, the NPOV Lions Club began running excursion trains in 1981. These trains ran a slowly expanding fleet until the cost of regular line inspections led to the 2016 discontinuance of rail service in the northern part of the line, opening the opportunity for railbiking, which commenced in 2018. Freight operations and the Newport Priest River Rotary Club SPORT (Scenic Pend Oreille River Train) continue further south on the line.
The Vehicles
Tumblr media
As seen in many railbiking operations around the country, the NPOV Lions built their own bike based on the Railriders aluminum-framed and polyurethane-wheeled design. Lion Larry Pollack showed me the design and construction modifications he and the rest of the Lions made, including converting bolted connections to welds and moving the front wheels and axles to to the extreme front of the vehicles.
Moving the wheels to the front logically offers increased vehicle stability, but also created the challenge of decreasing seat adjustment range, potentially affecting taller riders. Larry explained that he has plans to deal with this and I look forward to seeing his next design update.

Travel Notes
I travelled to Ione as part of a trip through the Pacific Northwest while staying in Spokane, Washington. I didn’t see any good options for using public transit to reach Ione from Spokane for a day trip. Also, given that Ione is 85 miles (137 kms) north of Spokane, it would have been impractical to cycle there and back in the time I had, so I opted for a rental car. The drive was impressively scenic, running through hills and farmlands and ultimately paralleling the Pend Oreile River and Railroad. Nearby attractions include the Seattle City Light Boundary Dam and the Tiger Historical Museum.
The cultural and entertainment offering in Spokane (note to fellow North-Easterners: it’s apparently pronounced Spo-can) far exceed expectation with classic spots such as the Davenport Hotel and contemporary offerings such as the Volstead Act. The Spokane River waterfront is a charming park comprised of bicycle and pedestrian trails and bridges, featuring the Numerica SkyRide aerial tramway over the Spokane Falls hydro-electric generator.
Tumblr media
Railfans, and fans of Americana in general, will appreciate Frank’s Diner, housed in a former Barney Smith railcar that once served as the presidential car for the Northern Pacific Railroad.
Tumblr media
Amtrak’s once-per-day westward Empire Builder is scheduled to leave Spokane at 02:45. The train was delayed just enough for me to enjoy the sunrise as I boarded.

“Ok that works. You don’t have too even see him now”jude say
“ why don’t we just talk to him”noah says
“ you know what Oscar said he’s upset and he runs. Confronting him isn’t going to help the situation.”
“ what if I befriend him.”Noah asked
“ how?”jude asked
“ just lunch talking I can act like I don’t know who he is”
“ if the opportunity happens then ok but please don’t search him out. He’s not a story to chase he my brother that has mental issues “
“ I know jude but he’s your brother not a wild animal.”noah say
“ but he acts like one”jude says
Noah is getting frustrated with Jude because he feels like jude can benefit from having a relationship with his brother. Who knows maybe jude can help his brother deal with the revelation for having a twin.
“ maybe he needs a little compassion in his life jude . He was raised by Oscar. Maybe that’s all he needs.”noah say
It’s not often Jude thinks Noah is delusional or naive. This is one of those time.
“ noah I have a bad feeling about him.”
“ how bad can he be he’s your twin.”
“ he was raised by Oscar and he killed my moms dog!”jude say.
“ ok ok I get it . I just want us to have as much family in our life as we can. We both have been with out it for a while .
“I understand where this is going noah I do but I don’t think he needs to be apart of our support system if we even need one at this rate.”jude say
“ do you think Pax would man up and actually take the baby and raise it alone.”noah say
“ I don’t know but if you want to chase something like a story dig around in pax’s background.”
“ then what”
“ get a feel for him we already know he isn’t loyal and he has had some money issue” W.W.O.D. What would Oscar do. Jude thought to himself. Jude knows this is a dangerous road to travel down but day by day jude is growing to love the idea of a family with Noah.At first he thought that he could never have all of his dreams come true . There is no way he would ever be that lucky. Meet Noah and getting the devils he has figured out that he can have everything : Devils,a husband, and a family.
“ what do you know that I don’t “noah asked
“ the commissioners wife paid Pax to sleep with her .”
“Gigalowe! Are you serious he’s that bad at money management that he blow all of his money and had to sell his dick to make ends meeting?!!
“ please don’t ever make that a headline.”Jude say
“ I won’t. I promise but if I did it would be great”
“ thank you. We really don’t need those kind of headlines”jude says
“True”noah is starting to see that his marriage is going to mess with career. Noah has a lot of soul searching when it concern his career and how he’s going to handle it.He feels like he has to choice between a happy home life or his career. He know which one he will choice everytime. Jude. Period. The life he’s building with Jude means everything to Noah. The devils are as much of his concern as Jude’s.
The rest of the trip noah sat back and watched the sky line fly by.
At the arena
Brandon feels lost like a child sitting in the security office at the mall.Brandon has no clue how he got to the arena or what happened to his wallet. The last thing he remembers is being in Florida sitting in a rental car across from his mother’s house watching his sister play. His busted lips gave him a clue to where his things might be at. Snow the officer of duty at the moment walks in with a glass of water and a monster.
“ your father just called and he’s sending a car to come pick you up.” The sammy Davis jr look alike say
Brandon doesn’t have a clue what his game play is but he needed to regroup.
15 minutes later
Jude and Noah drive up to the arena and see a town car sitting out front.
“ do you think that’s car is for my brother?” Jude ask as he turns to park in the back.
“ stop “noah say
“ what?!jude stops in a rush luckly Porsche have great breaks Jude thought to himself.
Noah looks over and watches “jude”walk down from the top of the stairs .
Noah double takes looking at Jude then Brandon
“Holy shit “ noah say
Jude cranks his head to take a look.
“ I can’t see”jude says
“ from here I don’t think I can tell you two apart.”
“ well you really need to figure something out.”jude says in a worried tone.
Jude’s tone makes noah look at him.
“ I’ll come up with something I promise you Dane.”noah says as he leans in and gives him a quick kiss on jude pouted lips.
Noah and Jude have question written down and Put in the safe. The only person who knows the combination is noah.Noah tooks pictures of every scare birthmark and oddities on Jude’s body. They also are keeping those pictures on a disk in the safe.
Hotel
As soon as Brandon gets into his hotel room his phone rings.
Brandon already know who it is.
“ Father ?”
“ Brandon? are you ok?” Oscar asked
“I blacked out again”Brandon says
“ it’s ok come home and speaking to your therapist “
“ I can’t I’m this close to meeting him”
“ if that’s the case then why don’t you just walk up to jude and talk to him”oscar suggest
“ you know I can’t do that what if he doesn’t like me”Brandon say
“ Brandon I’m coming to get you. I’ll be in la....”
“ give me a month I’ll work up the nerves to talk to him I promise father “Brandon says in a small voice.
“ you’ll be on your best behavior? No more dead dogs?”
“ it was a accident I just wanted a closer look I didn’t know more then one sleeping pill will kill a dog!” Brandon voice changes into something more angry
“Kyle?”
“Yes!”
“ we can talk about this when my son wants to talk.”oscar says before hanging up.
At the arena
Jude is showing his personal security guard around . She wanted to see all of the exits in case of emergency. She is what he imagined Noah’s sister would look like. She almost 6’1 medium complex long legs and dark eyes but that’s where the similarities end. She has dark brown hair not black and she’s curvy like a real plus size model.jude thought
“ sir would you happen to have a list of places you frequent on a regular bases?” Officer Murray ask
“ of course “ jude writes down every place he can think of at the moment that he might go to.
There a knock on the door.Jude and Murray look up at the same time.
Noah and loinel walk in.
“ hey.”noah say as he wave to jude and walks over to Murray.
“This is my husband noah and my hag and Noah’s boss Lionel Davenport.”jude says
“ hi nice to meet you.”Murray say as she shakes both of their hands.
“ when ever I’m with either one of them you can take a break”jude say
“ all right. That works. I’ll go walk around and get comfortable with the building?”
“ sure that works be back in a hour.”jude says
Murray nods and disappears out the door.
“ ok what going on?”lionel demands as she sits down and gets comfortable.
Jude and Noah lean against Jude’s desk looking at lionel.
“Well I have a unstable twin brother that lives in New York that went to the same school as Eve”jude says
“A brother? Of course he’s unstable .Hello I was the man wife and never felt more unstable in my life. That awful. So what’s with the bodyguard.”
“ that where the unstable part come in “ noah say as he crosses his arm.
“ he has a split personality. I think I might be in danger of him trying to replace me.”jude says
“ ok I need a drink. “ Lionel gets up and head to the door.
Jude and Noah both look at each other and shrug.
They follow lionel out.
A few hours later noah and jude are walking into the house.
“ so tell me about officer Murray? Do you think she’s a good fit?”
“ so far I like her . She’s on time. She seems like she thinks outside the box.”jude says as he opens the refrigerator and grabs two beers
“Want a beer”jude ask noah who is leaning against the kitchen counter.
“ nah I think I’m good but I will take a water.”jude tosses noah a bottle of water.
“ thanks”
They walk out into the living room.
“ feel like Netflix and chill”noah asked as he sits down.”
“In bed yes.” Jude says as he heads toward the bedroom.
“ bedroom it is then.”
By the time noah gets into the bedroom after a pit stop in the bathroom jude is half naked.
Noah starts to strip. Noah notices that Jude’s shoulders are down and he keeps rubbing the back of his neck.
“ Dane? “
“ huh?” Jude looks over to noah who is pulling off his shoe in his closet.
“ sit on the bed for me”
“ ah ok” jude sits on the bed.
Noah sits on the other side and swings his legs over and the scoots over to sit behind Jude.
Noah starts to massage Jude’s shoulders.
“ god that feels so good.”jude sighs and rotates his neck.
“ good. So knowing Brandon is here really has you stressed out huh.”
“That obvious huh.”
“ I watch you all the time I can see it all over your face and in the way you move.”noah says
“ when you say things like that I worry a little less about you not knowing if it’s the real me.”
“ look at me.”noah says
Noah scoots back to make room on the bed for jude to turn and look at noah.
“ Jude you’re my best friend my husband and my world. We will get through this and anything else that gets thrown at us.”
Jude nods and leans into Noah.
Noah kisses Jude’s shoulders then the side of his head.
“ I missed us today”jude says
“ I missed our bubble too.”noah says
“ I guess we are back to reality “jude says
Jude sighs. Noah leans back and does a sloppy flip off the bed.
“ let’s go and be in our bubble in the shower.”noah says.
Jude smiles and follows noah into the bathroom.
The week goes quickly for both Noah and Jude. Neither one have seen or heard a peep out of Brandon. Noah has called and checked on Jamie everyday. There hasn’t been a sighting of Pax either. Was it the quiet before the storm jude thought at the weekly dinner that jude made himself.
On the menu this week : Mac and cheese, salads and grilled shrimp.
“ so how is it?”jude asked after he pushes the storm questions out of his head.
“ well shrimp is a little tough and the Mac and cheese could have baked a little older but besides that great job Dane.”noah says with a little sarcasm and a wink.
“ hey don’t blame me for the shrimp I’m not the one that cornered my husband and kissed him for like 5 minutes.”jude says
“ well ok. I can’t help myself you are just so irresistible when you cook and your wearing one of my wife beaters.” Noah said
Jude smiles and touches the love bite on his neck then rolls his eyes.
“ I’m kidding about the Mac and cheese it’s good by the way. So I found my baseball gear today while I was unpacking . Any chance you want to hit the batting cage or play catch after dinner?”noah asked
“ sure. Did you pick up my suit any chance?”jude asked.
“ no did you ask me to? Did I for get to pick it?”Noah asked.
“ no no I went to pick it up today after work and they said it was all ready picked up.”jude say
“ oh . Do you think they lost it?”noah asked
“ no I don’t Think they did. I have never had a problem with them before.”
“ do you think....”
“ my brother took them?”
“Yes anything possible jude . We know he’s in town”
“Great.”jude shakes his he and rubs the back of his neck “
“ ok take a breath and tell me which suit it was”
“ the brown one and I can’t remember the other one.”
“Ok the one I hate and a nother one got it.”
“ huh you hate the brown one ?”
“Yeah I should have rip it off you when I had a chance “
“ oh ok just remember the next time you see it i won’t be me wearing it.let me get it back before you do that. While we are on the subject of clothing. The next time I see you wearing underwear with holes I’m ripping them off you.”jude says with a smile.
“ is that a threat or a promise?”noah asked as he watches jude walk into the kitchen for a glass of water.
“ promise and I’m hiding those “ swim suit” too” jude says
“ I was wondering what happened to them.”
“ I hid them just before making dinner last weekend .”
“ oh so what do I have to do to get them back?” Noah says in his most seductive tone.
“Hummm I have to think about it”jude says teasingly.
“ I’m up for a challenge.”noah say
“Good because Im going to think of something good”
Noah gets a text. Noah’s face goes from flirty husband to worried.
“ noah everything ok?”
“She going to the hospital “noah say
“ what’s wrong” jude asked
“ not sure she said she feels off like something is wrong with the baby” noah say as he gets up and starts to walk away from the table.
Jude watches as noah grabs his shoes.
“ I’ll be back I want to check on them.”noah say
“ ok I’ll be here hanging out.” Jude say
Noah comes back and kisses jude before leaving.
“ love you” noah says on his way out.
Noah was so fast Jude’s response was only heard by his own ears.
“ love you .... too”
Two hours later jude receives a text from noah saying that it was just Braxton Hicks.
Jude didn’t really know what that means.
For the rest of the evening jude does some serious soul searching about the baby. Jude is thinking about everything noah has dug up on Pax this week. Pax’s brother was a baller that died in a car accident just before his first season in the league. His mother was never married and is a registered nurse. Pax didn’t make it through college. He flunked out just before the draft. Jude didn’t want to know how noah found out that pax is selling signed jersey online or that pax is in so much debt it’s ridiculous.
Jude thought to himself that noah has put so much time , money and heart into this baby that he know he’s not giving up on it no matter how much Jude has warned him about it. A part of jude is afraid that there is no way the universe is going to give him everything he has ever wanted in his life.Jude’s gut feeling is that he and noah are going to be heart broken by the end of the year.
Jude sigh and he gives up on trying to talk Noah out of this baby.
Jude picks up his phone and goes on to amazon to look up books on pregnancy and child birth.
Three hours later.
Jude has fallen asleep on the couch reading his new book. Noah walks in hoping that jude is awake because he has some news that he is dying to tell him.
Noah see jude on the couch with his phone in his hand.
Hummm I wonder if he was waiting up for me and fell asleep checking his emails.noah thought to himself
Noah takes Jude’s phone out of his hand and places it on the coffee table.
Jude starts to stir.
“ hey I’m home”noah say with a gentle shake.
“ what time is it “ jude say as he slowly opens his eyes.
Noah checks Jude’s phone.
“ 1245”
Jude rotates his head and stretches.
“ is everything ok still?”
“ yeah it’s great ! I have some news!” Noah is beyond giddy. He’s practically bouncing on the coffee table.
“Give me a second to wake up noah.” Jude say half a sleep.
Apart of jude wants to act like he is about to fall asleep but he doesn’t.
“ ok so what’s..”
Noah is smiling from ear to ear as he bites his bottom lip as he tries to contain his excitement.
“ it’s a girl!”Noah say as he grabs jude and hugs him.
“ seriously?!!”
“Yes I have pictures!”noah says with a smile.
“ sonagraphs you mean?”jude say
“ look at you using pregnancy terms”noah say as he takes the sonagram picture from his jacket pocket to hand to Jude.
“ if your wondering how I knew that I have decided to stop fighting you when it comes to our maybe baby and go with the flow. I download a few books to catch up on my knowledge on babies ,pregnancy and fatherhood.”
“ really?”noah says
“ yeah” jude says with a small smile.
“ god I love you”noah leans in and kisses jude. Jude smiles against his husband’s lips.
Jude sits back and pulls Noah with him. They stretch out on the couch. Noah is nestled in between jude ‘s legs.noah pulls away first.
“ tell me about what happened at the hospital”jude asked.
Noah rest his head on his back of his hands looking at jude.
“ every time I see her her belly it looks so different. It blows my mind.” Noah says
Jude holds up the first “photos “of their maybe baby.
“ wow look at her nose! Are those her feet?” Jude asked
“ yes I have a video you have to see it she’s sucking on her fingers!”
“ really?”
“ yes here she’s was totally spread eagle and you can see that she’s a girl clear as day.well that’s what the women says.”noah say
Jude smiles at Noah’s enthusiasm he thought it is contagious.
“ yeah her nose is cute.”noah say
“Oh wow these are really interesting looking” jude said as he hopes he is looking at the right ones.
“ ok I have to tell you something.”
“ ok ...what up ?”the tone In Noah’s voice says it could be some bad.
“She put my name down as the father. I didn’t asked to.”
Jude sighs
“What about the dna test you know we got the results in back yesterday.” Jude says
“ it’s been like this for months but I found out today.”
“ I think we need a lawyer.”jude says
“Yeah I think you might be right.”noah says
“ ok we can think about this later?” Jude says as he puts the sonagram pictures on the coffee table.
“ so what do you have in mind? Noah asked
“ happy 2 week anniversary”jude before pulling Noah into a kiss.
The next morning
Jude and Noah wake up the next day tangle in sheets .Noah’s head is at the top of th bed and Jude’s head is at the bottom with him feet next to Noah’s head.
Noah stretches his back and Jude’s feet hits his face.
Noah looks down at jude who is still sleeping and smiles to himself. He grabs his phone and turns on his camera app and starts to record.
Noah wasn’t sure how ticklish jude is. He knows he’s slightly ticklish from the fact that jude won’t get a pedicure with Lionel or him. He angle his camera to only show Jude’s foot and he runs one finger lightly over the center of Jude’s foot. Jude’s whole foot scrunches up. Noah does it again but a little hard. Jude kicks him in the face and almost fall off the bed .
Noah grabs jude ‘s leg so he didn’t fall off the bed .
“Nono” jude says in a groggy voice
“ what??”noah says with a devilish grin.
Jude scrambles to get up on the bed before noah looses his grip.
Jude sits up and eyes noah who is on his phone.
“ Jude I’ve been hacked. Wait you posted sleeping pictures of me?”
“I was wondering when you noticed when you were husband hacked .”
“ aww you even used a hashtag. I’m so proud of you.”
“ I said I would try this social media thing”jude says as he crawls to the head of the bed.
Noah smiles when jude leans in and kisses him good morning.
“ hey Dane . Sleep well.”
Jude rolls his eyes.
“You know I did .”Jude says
“ that dick the best sleeping pill ever!”noah says
“ and you can’t overdose”jude say offering his fist to pound.
They both laugh.
“ so do we have any comment”jude asked
“Of course . The one that shows my back and the top of my ass. Has the most likes.
“ you do look hot in that one.”
“ those gluts exercises are paying off.”noah say as he looks through the comments.
“ look at all the flames and heart eyes.” Jude says
“ yeah people love skin”noah say
As Noah scrolls down his comments one sticks out to him for some reason.
“ bigbro925.” Noah say out loud.
He is the first negative comment on the whole post so far.
“ is your brother older?”noah asked

Paradigm Shift
Characters: Kenny Omega x OFC x Jon Moxley (fka Dean Ambrose)
Summary: In the cold war between WWE and AEW, Hannah McMahon has a foot in both worlds: she's climbing the ranks in her father's company while also dating Kenny Omega. But as more disgruntled wrestlers leave WWE for AEW - including a certain lunatic fringe - Hannah faces an impossible choice: fight for her family or for love?
Note: Featuring my OFC, Hannah McMahon. Takes place within the same universe as a couple other fics I wrote over on FanFiction. I’ll be cross-posting this over there, as well.
Part 1/?
Chapter One: Cheaper Than Therapy
Sunday, April 21, 2019 Davenport, Iowa
“Alright, alright—everyone raise your glasses!” The table grew quiet as Colby called for attention, and everyone reverently raised their shot glasses and drinks in toast. “I’ll try to keep this short and sweet,” he started. “Tonight was The Shield’s Final Chapter, and I’m not gonna lie: it’s bittersweet. When The Shield debuted at Survivor Series 2012, in those god-awful turtlenecks, I had no idea that it would become one of the greatest stables in WWE history and, in my very biased opinion, all of wrestling. Those first two original years not only shaped who I am as a wrestler and person, but gave me a sister and two brothers in Hannah, Joe, and Jon. And no matter what we’re going through or where we’re working, I know they’ll always have my back, and I’ll always have theirs.
“So here’s to Jon, who’s going off to greener pastures. We wish you nothing but success in all your future endeavors. And here’s to The Shield, the greatest faction this side of DX.”
“To The Shield!” the table proclaimed, and after clinking glasses with everyone around her Hannah McMahon kicked back her shot. She twitched unpleasantly as the Jack Daniel’s burned down her throat; it’d been awhile since she’d drank hard liquor, but tonight called for it.
Just over an hour ago in front of less than 12,000 fans in Moline, Illinois, The Shield had wrestled their final match. Hannah had fought back tears as she’d raised Seth, Roman, and Dean’s arms in the ring for the last time; truly, it had felt as if she were closing not just a chapter, but an entire book in the anthology of her life. The Shield was what had brought her to WWE TV after years of refusing to become an onscreen character. It had been her creative outlet for all her backstage frustrations; it had molded her philosophy on the business; it had made her a stronger person, both in front of and behind the camera. It had given her love; it had given her pain. And even though the show had been a beautiful send-off for the group, it would take more than just a final match for Hannah and the rest of them to adequately close that chapter. So here they all were, just over the Mississippi River in Davenport, Iowa, where they could all pour one out for The Shield at Colby’s favorite hometown haunt.
“Hannah! What do you want? I’m buying.”
She snapped out of her reverie at the sound of Baron Corbin’s voice. Most of the other wrestlers on the card had come out to celebrate—either because they were good friends with Colby, Joe, and Jon, or just because they enjoyed a good time. “Oh, I’m good,” she said with a shake of her head. “I’m gonna head out here in a little bit.”
“What?” Joe whipped his head around when he heard that. “Six and a half years of history and you’re only gonna have one shot? I’m disappointed, Hannah. As I recall, the very first time we went out drinking together you rode a mechanical bull on Bourbon Street.”
Bayley’s eyes lit up at that. “Are you serious?! Okay, I have to hear this story.”
“No, you really don’t,” Hannah interrupted before Joe could elaborate. “All you need to know is it was Bourbon Street. And a lot has changed in six and a half years, Joe.”
“Yeah,” Fergal—a.k.a. Finn Balor—said from next to Hannah. “Now instead of staying out drinking with us she wants to get to the hotel so she can have phone sex with Kenny.”
Everyone within earshot either gaped in shock or burst out laughing. Hannah backhanded Fergal’s shoulder. “We don’t have phone sex!” she proclaimed in disgust.
“Bullshit. You two’ve kept up a long-distance relationship for over a year, you must be doing something.”
Hannah’s entire face burned bright red. What she did behind closed doors with her boyfriend was no one’s business. “Well, you’re an asshole, and I think I’ll take that drink now.”
“That-a girl,” Joe grinned.
“I’ll get it,” Fergal said in consolation as he got up from the table. “You know I’m just teasing you, Hannah.”
“Uh huh,” she muttered; but when he returned with her favorite beer all was forgiven.
The night continued on, friends and colleagues reminiscing about the past and wondering about the future, and one by one people closed their tabs and headed out to the next town, until there were only a handful left at the bar. It was nearing midnight when Hannah finally decided she should hit the road herself.
“Are you sure you don’t want to crash at my place?” Colby asked as she stood from the table. “My guest room is only 20 minutes away.”
“Thanks but no thanks. I’m gonna let you two,” she suggestively wagged her finger between Colby and Becky, “have the house to yourselves. Besides, you know I like my midnight drives. They’re cheaper than therapy.”
“That I do know,” Colby grinned. “Come here.” He wrapped her up in a hug, and suddenly Hannah felt tears pricking at the back of her eyes again. While her relationship with each of the guys in The Shield were unique and special in their own way, her friendship with Colby was beyond. Colby was her brother, her partner in crime both on and off-screen, and the best friend she’d ever had. Now that The Shield was officially disbanded, she didn’t know if they’d ever get to work together on TV again—and, deep down, that was what really got her.
“Okay, I’m gonna start crying again,” she forced a smile as she pulled away and wiped her eyes. “I gotta get out of here.” She turned to Becky and gave her a warm hug. “See you at the next one.”
“Drive safe, alright?” Becky said. “Send us a text when you get to the hotel.”
“I will,” she said, and with another wave she went up to the bar to settle her tab. Jon was there ordering another drink. “Planning on closing the place down?” she asked.
He sent her a crooked smirk. “When have you ever known me to do anything else, Hannah?”
“Fair point. Renee’s driving, I hope?”
“Yeah, but we got a hotel here. She’ll go to Des Moines in the morning.”
Hannah gave a silent nod as she handed the bartender her card just as the other barkeep set Jon’s drink in front of him; but he didn’t make a move to take it. He just stood there, watching her.
“What?” Hannah finally asked.
“You know I’m going to AEW, right?”
The bluntness of his tone caught her off-guard, but the statement itself didn’t. “Please,” she dismissed. “Of course I know you’re going to AEW. What kind of dumb fucking question is that?”
They locked eyes across the bar—and then both let out a wry laugh. “That was a dumb fucking question, wasn’t it?” Jon grinned.
“It really fucking was.”
Their shared smile lasted a few seconds longer, but soon enough a lull fell between them, as it always inevitably did. Over the years there’d been far too many words left unsaid, and they’d pooled up like a vast gulf separating shores. When the bartender brought Hannah her receipt, she all but jumped to sign her name and split. But then Jon said something that really did catch her off-guard.
“I’m gonna miss you, Hannah. Really. You always stood up for me.”
Hannah fiddled with the pen in her fingers. “Well, I just wanted you to be happy and succeed. Same as I want for everyone in this company. And I’m sorry it didn’t work out. For you in WWE, I mean,” she quickly added.
Jon flashed that smirk again. “No worries, boss. We had a good run.”
Crimson involuntarily blossomed across Hannah’s cheeks. Knowing Jon, he’d fully intended the double entendre behind that statement. She scribbled her name on the receipt. “Well, I’m heading out—”
“Hannah! Are you leaving?”
Hannah momentarily closed her eyes at the sound of Renee’s peppy voice. She really needed to go. “Yeah, I gotta get to Des Moines. I think I need the drive to unpack tonight, honestly.”
“Oh my God, I know,” Renee empathetically intoned. “The Shield was like your wrestling coming of age story!”
“That’s… actually a really good way of putting it,” Hannah agreed.
“Well, even though tonight was the end of something special I’m excited to see what you’ll do down in NXT. I really think the show will benefit from having you as GM.”
Hannah couldn’t help the puzzled look that crossed her face. Why did Renee have to be so nice? It would be so much easier to just ignore her if she wasn’t so nice. “Thanks, Renee. That means a lot.”
Suddenly her phone buzzed in her hand—it was a text from Kenny. “Gah, I really should go,” she said, and after a second’s hesitation she gave Renee an awkward hug goodbye. She turned to Jon. “Good luck, Moxley,” she quipped; and before she knew what was happening, he pulled her into a hug.
Every muscle in her body tensed. It’d been what felt like a lifetime since they’d touched like this. It was something foreign that had once been familiar, and that made it all the worse. “Maybe I’ll see you around,” he said into her ear. It sent goosebumps down Hannah’s neck, and she had to pull away.
“See you tomorrow,” she said to Renee, and she walked as quickly as she could out of the bar and to the illuminated parking lot where her rental sat. She dialed Kenny as soon as she climbed into the SUV. He answered on the third ring.
“Hey, baby.”
Hannah relaxed back into the driver’s seat. Hearing Tyson’s soft voice floating through the speaker immediately put her at ease. “Hey. You haven’t been up waiting on me, have you?”
“Well, technically not; I’m up playing video games. But you know I can’t sleep until I know you’ve made it to the next stop.”
“I know,” she said apologetically. “I’m leaving Davenport now; I should be in Des Moines in about two and a half hours. I honestly probably should have left here an hour ago.”
“Why?” he sounded surprised. “Is everything okay?”
She sighed. “Yeah. Tonight was just… emotional. The Shield was like my version of Bullet Club or The Elite, you know? And now it’s over.”
“I know. But it was time. You’ve all outgrown it, and now you’re each going on to do more amazing things. And from now until the end of time everyone will look back at The Shield as the thing that first put four incredible performers on the map.”
Hannah’s smile risked splitting her face in two. God, she was in love with this man. “How do you always know exactly what to say?”
“It’s a preternatural gift, I can’t explain it.”
“Well, thank you. And you’re right. But nostalgia’s a hell of a drug.”
“That it is. But don’t you worry; in two more days I’ll put you through a strict detox program.”
Hannah bit her lip at the thought. After SmackDown’s show in Lincoln, Nebraska on Tuesday she’d make the short two-hour flight to Winnipeg to spend a few days with Tyson before she had to be back on the road Friday. That was how they’d managed their time together ever since he’d left NJPW in January: splitting their free days between his place in Canada and hers in Connecticut, or wherever was most convenient. It could be stressful at times, and Hannah lived out of a suitcase—but it was the same for any other pro wrestler who maintained a relationship with someone outside the business. The only difference was that Tyson was in the business; he just worked for a different company. A rival company. But they both chose not to think about that.
“Oh really? And what will you prescribe, Dr. Omega?”
“I have a few pretty intense regimens planned,” he said, and Hannah couldn’t help herself—she let out a laugh. “What?”
“Back at the bar Fergal accused me of wanting to leave early so I could go have phone sex with you. I told him we don’t do that, but this is sure starting to sound like it.”
“Please, this is barely phone foreplay. Besides, Fergal doesn’t have any room to throw stones about phone sex.”
“Yeah, don’t wanna know,” Hannah quickly said. “But I’ll be counting down the days until Tuesday. I’m excited to finally get to spend some time with you in Winnipeg again. I feel bad that you’ve mostly been the one traveling to see me the last month.”
She could almost hear him shaking his head through the phone. “Don’t. You’ve been really busy and I haven’t. And if the roles were reversed, I know you’d travel to see me.”
“I would,” she said, and in that moment her heart swelled with joy. She was so lucky to have found someone as understanding and supportive as Tyson. It made all the difference. “Well, I’m on the highway now, so I’ll let you get back to your game. I’ll text you when I get to the hotel.”
“Ok. Drive safe and listen to loud music.”
“I will. I love you.”
“I love you too, baby.”
Hannah ended the call, her soul a million times lighter. She turned up the radio and focused on the road ahead, the past in the rearview mirror. As she’d told Colby, midnight drives were cheaper than therapy.
